This game is the one exception. You can see the care and love the developers put into this game and I’m glad my friend recommended me this enhanced remaster more or less. In summary, if you’re not the biggest fan of RPGs and are not interested whatsoever in anime, give this game a shot. I was very skeptical when I got the recommendation but you just got to play it. The style and the music and the overall vibe of this game are unmatched by anything I have played this generation. ( Ok actually Last of Us, Mario Odyssey, God of War, and hopefully TLOU Part II top this but still, this game is more than worth the 100+ hours!) Expand

And the price? Compared to what the original game is going for nowadays? Ouch! Expand

My favorite game of this generation enhanced so much in this version.

They even took the time to make characters that didn't seem exist till their arcs appear in some interactions before. You will see them at school, or even walking behind you when you eavesdrop other students when going to school. Did any of those that complain notice it? Probably not, but it's not a game for such people. The amount of detail this game has is something that overcomes their capabilities.
The whole game is a piece of art. Musically awesome (some new songs here too), visually better, now characters have more portraits showing different expressions, new and expanded confidants, cutscenes, activities and places. Some UI tweaks, multi language for people that can't speak English (or Japanese). More Personas and Arcanas. Existing dungeons and bosses had some changes to make them better.
Mementos, which got tiring in the original game as it was too dense and always the same, now was revamped too with many updates, it's actually fun going there! Even the title screen is so much cooler now, the inclusion of the thieves den to have some ingame achievements to unlock and check other stuff like in Persona 4 Golden.
What people complained about so much was solved: Morgana is not bothering you every night telling you to go to sleep which lets you do more activities at night!
Also the English translation had some text tweaked for the better.

It's not for everyone, it's a text heavy game and I understand that some people with short attention span won't like it, but it doesn't make it bad at all. It's a masterpiece. It's Stylesona Enhanced.

A sad remaster that fails to fix issues with the original like the frustrating airlock puzzles, the lack of development with many cast members, and slog of an ending and instead adds a personality-less new girl, a sloppily written new palace and ending, and an ugly new opening number. Persona 4 golden did everything this game does, did it better, AND was a port to a portable system.

The upgraded version of one of the finest game of all time; new characters and tracks, improved interactions, better game mechanichs, more dynamic dungeons and even more diversity in casual battles. A brand new game, totally worthly of the expense. Too bad for the "true ending" final cutscene, for me a bit unsadisfaying.

First off I believe you need to compare this version of the game to the original since they are both playable on the same system and a new player would have to choose between them and old players need to choose if this is worth buying when they already have a version of persona 5. If you are getting this one solely to have the ‘definitive’ version, also keep in mind both persona 4 andFirst off I believe you need to compare this version of the game to the original since they are both playable on the same system and a new player would have to choose between them and old players need to choose if this is worth buying when they already have a version of persona 5. If you are getting this one solely to have the ‘definitive’ version, also keep in mind both persona 4 and persona 3 got remakes on portable systems, so I would not be surprised if we get another persona 5 remake for a portable system one day.

So for everything good I have to say about royal I have something bad to say compared to the original:

Good new graphics update - but bad new opening that you see every time you start the game, uglier, smaller font (big deal since this game is largely told through text and dialogue) used than the original game, and some of the new character busts are very odd looking and don’t look like they were drawn by the people who did the old busts.

A new semester with a new palace! - it is optional. It also needs to be unlocked and the unlocking is easy enough to miss that many players may accidentally miss it. Also the new ‘semester’ isn’t very long and it is only like a month ish, calling it a ‘semester’ almost feels misleading. I can see why there are many bad reviews saying they were unhappy with how little new content there was.

New confidants to do and a new romance option - but without going into spoilers the new royal characters are very similar to ones from previous Atlus games (including previous persona games) so if you are familiar with other persona, smt, or other Atlus games the new characters may feel stale or predictable.

A new party member to use! - but she is on team for a very, very short amount of time so people excited to use a new party member will probably be disappointed. And her character arc doesn’t match the other characters being more about accepting her past and herself than of fighting against social norms and abuse. And as above, her writing is really predictable and weak.

New battle mechanics and changes to make some aspects (like weapons and guns) more useful! - but it causes some balancing issues. Some changes now make the game too easy later in the game and make make some things already in the game obsolete. Example: changes to the guns to make them better made gun-based persona and gun persona skills a waste of time to use as well as making Haru much less useful, and she already suffers as she joins the cast very late.

...So, yeah, I do not believe royal is an unquestionable improvement to the original. I’d even go as far as saying that the new additions really could have used more work and many of the changes actually hurt the game instead of improving it. The new characters are also very disappointing and I don’t think most players will enjoy them.

So overall I can’t say I enjoyed this version as much as the original, but I don’t think it is a bad game. If you played the original I wouldn’t bother getting this one and if you have never played persona 5 I would say get the original because it will probably be cheaper and it isn’t any worse. I’d only really recommend this version if safety difficultly was too hard for you in the original or if you are a stickler for good graphics and have a giant, super HD TV so a graphic upgrade would make a huge difference to you. Overall though I don’t think royal is worth it to the average gamer. It isn’t ‘bad’ but ‘unnecessary’ might be a good word.

Buy, rent, watch an LP, or skip? Skip. The original will probably serve you fine and most of the new changes may not be worth buying the game again, most new plot points are optional and don’t change the story and are skippable.

    Game-play: 1
The only changes from the original are exploit fixes and changes to make a game that wasn't really that had easier such as copying the simultaneous attacks from the Golden (now called 'showtimes'), adding more SP items to the palaces, and passing out bullets like candy. Newcomers may enjoy but returning players that don't enjoy playing an easier version of a game they have already played will not enjoy Royal.

    Music/Sound: 1
The music is the same as the original, missing a great opportunity to add Lotus Juice back into persona. And honestly? I liked the old battle theme better.

    Graphics & Visuals: 1
The same as the original but with minor tweaks like busts that can turn their heads and putting the busts in little boxes during phonecalls. I expected much more for the price.

    Story/World-building: 0
Royal fails to fix the issues with the original story and adds new sections and events that are a grand waste of time and don't build on the story or characters in any meaningful way. I'm completely serious, Royal makes the story of P5 worse instead of better.

    Characters: 0
The new characters, I'm sorry, royally suck. While Maruki is decent with a story that works but is pretty messy, the other two are straight-up fails. Jose is nothing but a cute face only there to add an unnecessary mechanic and Kasumi is pointless and could be used as a guide on how not to handle complex characters by having dozens of ideas attached to a single character but not fleshing any of them out and backtracking on her development by the end. While we will argue forever as to who P5's best girl is, at least we can now narrow down who worst girl is: Kasumi and/or her sister.

Because of this crime, he is transferred to Tokyo to go to a new school. However, on his first day, he gets pulled into another dimension and gets a power called Persona. He and his future friends then use this power to become Phantom Thieves that steal the hearts of corrupt adults to change society.

As for the gameplay, it follows standard RPG format. Combat is turn-based battles where you can use your Personas to attack enemies and exploit their weaknesses for fun combat. The menus for your actions that you can perform are all heavily stylized, which makes getting into combat worth it just to see them. Outside of combat, you live the life of a Japanese high schooler. You have free time throughout the days to hang out with your friends, go to school, work at jobs, or improve your social skills. Doing those things helps you when you are a phantom thief. They can give you special bonuses or abilities that makes your job of reforming society easier.

In my opinion, this game is worth every cent, probably even more, that you spend on it. I love that the plot gives you a great feeling of actually reforming society and keeping you on your toes for doing the right thing. The combat and phantom thief gameplay are really satisfying and allow you to approach situations in many different ways. The daily life gameplay acts as a nice counterbalance to the other parts of the game and gives you great character interactions and a really good reason to care about the world you are trying to save.

tldr; the game is near, if not already, perfect and I would highly recommend anyone with a PS4 to get it.

Persona 5 "Vanilla", or Persona 5, was already a masterpiece with some problems here and there, but overall one of the most funny and thrilling experience I had playing with Playstation 4.
Persona 5 Royal comes in with various improvements:
-Ammos recharging after a battle, easier social stat levelling, you can buy more gifts for confidants, phone call during the day and even more.
-New true-ending, with a new Palace and a new Memento Area.
    -New OSTs.
Graphics in combat are even more awesome than the original P5 (and I couldn't even imagine something like this), Kasumi and Akechi confidant are just great, especially the girl with her tragic background. I do love Akechi's personality too.
And I don't even know how to start a topic about the true ending.
"I Believe" is JUST F*KING AWESOME, the finale was thrilling and I was literally speecheless after the final battle. What a finale.
You-know-who has such a cool background, he was so different compared to the others. And his palace is amazing, with its magical atmosphere and thanks to "Gentle Madman" playing in background.
I am really happy and thankful to Atlus for making this game.
Now it's time for NG+, I already know that there are 2-3 cool things to do here :)

Then there are the times of the game where you are not allowed to do a damn thing outside what the story want you to do, these parts could have been automated to speed those parts up.
And that one boss that is all about you being lucky enough that the mobs does not run away to be replaced by new mobs that then run away, and over and over again.
There are also some long boss fights at the end that get boring.
Oh, and that part where IF your main character dies it is game over even though you have items and team members that can revive, does not happen often but the fact that this is in the game is simply bad design.
Guess I will go watch the extra semester somewhere because I sure as hell can not be bothered to spend more time with this dlc.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. More like “Persona 5: false advertising edition”. Seriously, almost everything said about this game is a lie or stretched truth or abusing misleading wording to trick people.

You see the girl with the red ponytail (Kasumi is her name) that takes up more of the cover than the mascot? The girl who is the main focus in almost every piece of advertising? - Ha, she is barely in the game! She’s in the main storyline but doesn’t really interact with anybody other than the protagonist and Goro and only joins team only after the original story ends in a section that only has one palace and only happens if you to max a certain characters confidant before a certain date.

The advertising also brags that the game was 30% bigger and too big to be DLC. That’s a laugh. Yeah, the file size of the game is about 30% bigger than the vanilla game, but the actual game is like 15-20 hours longer if you include the unlockable new palace. Most of what makes it bigger are just more images and higher quality images/textures, including things that nobody cares about like changing the hotel where you name the team which is a location you only see one or twice and isn’t important at all.

This is supposedly the ‘polished’ version also fails to polish the game:
-The story sections, other than cramped in additions, are untouched outside of slight wording choices instead of actually fixing issues with the plot or characters. The ‘polish’ outside of gameplay is almost exclusively minor graphical changes like more bloom and characters busts turning their heads more in portraits as if that is what gamers care about. The only aspect of the story the actually try to play with is Goro. They try to develop him but since the game’s main storyline requires him to wear a facade it most becomes fangirl fodder. Also, instead of tying up loose ends (without going into spoilers), they end up creating a new one by making what happens with Goro more ambiguous and creating new unanswered questions regarding what happened to him. -Gameplay ‘polish’ consists some changes that are mostly just padding the palaces with new parts (if you took out all the extensions, you could have made a new palace and had something else in the stupidly short new semester) and changes to how weapons/guns upgrade and refill as if they wanted players to be able to auto-rush most of the game instead of making the gameplay more engaging.
-And despite this being a version of a game on the same console that is supposed to be enough to warrant buying the game again, they fail to let you carry over from the vanilla game. While you get a starting bonus from having a save from the vanilla Persona 5 , it is a small one. Prepare to mash the X button through confidants you have already done because you are going to have to do it all over again and refuse all of your old personas.

This game gets a hot 0 from me because there is no reason to play or buy this game when the original is better and still available on the same system.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You know how Pokémon games would always release a 3rd version of a region that had slightly better graphics and small region changes, but it was otherwise buying the same game again just as a definitive version (like ruby and sapphire had emerald)? That is what this game is. Only Pokémon realized that people thought that was dumb and started making sequels to games instead (like black 2/white 2) and are now experimenting with DLC, while persona fans are apparently thrilled to pay for the same game they’ve played already just because there is one new palace, some minor graphics and battle tweaks, and a new party member that only decides to get off her butt and do something right before the game ends. The worst part is most of the improvements aren’t even that good. Grappling hook was great but most of the gameplay improvements are just more buffs/ammo/items or filler sections in existing palaces, graphics are slightly better but not noticeable most of the time, and the new characters were total disappointments. Call me when they remake this game in a way that actually fixes the problems of the original, like the stupid airlock puzzles in the spaceport, Morgana running away adding nothing to the story, and cleaning up plotholes like the traitor not even checking to see if the person he shot is in confirmed dead and in the morgue before moving on with his plans. The new party member isnt even available until the third semester either, making her a real waste. And the third semester itself is just one new month and palace that isnt even longer than prior ones. Sad.
The new content was disapointing. Spoilers

I know there are a few extra scenes and gameplay improvements here and there but at the end of the day this is like 20 dollar DLC being sold as a full price game. Pretty outrageous. It should have been DLC. I honestly feel as though Atlus sprinkled in this stuff into the main game just to have an excuse as to why this was a full release lol.

Ok, I see a lot of people comparing this version to the original so I’m writing a review as someone who didn’t play the original and came into the royal with a clean slate.

Honestly? It didn’t live up to the hype. While the gameplay is the best of any jrpg I’ve ever played and the music was fantastic, I wouldn’t give this game a 10/10 in any other aspect. But the gameplay parts I can’t stress enough are amazing, the palaces are beautiful and creative, cool monster designs, and the controls are super user friendly.

I see a lot of people praising the graphics, and while the menus, dialogue boxes, character portraits, and such were great, most of the in-game graphics were OK at best with flat textures on background items and buildings, low detail background characters, and showing characters from a distance to hide how weird some of their facial proportions and expressions are on the models. If you look at videos of the rhythm game spinoffs you can really see how much better some of the graphics could have been.

The story was also lacking. There was a lot of filler and I feel like you could have removed like a 1/4 of it and it wouldn’t make a big difference. Most of the female party members are totally removable - Futaba is useful and Ann helps kickstart the plot (but really doesn’t do anything once the plot starts moving) but Makoto only bosses people around and tells people things the player could really figure out on their own, Haru’s dad is more important than her and she’s really only on the team because she happens to be the one to find Morgana after he tries to leave, and Kasumi isn’t even part of the team until after the main part of the story is long over - even as someone who never knew the original I can tell she wasn’t in it and she was added in later because she is just too tacked on. There are also big parts that don’t add to the story like school trips/activities and Morgana running away that would have just improved the pacing if they had been removed.

The game is also very anticlimactic. Many side stories just kind of end. Morgana’s subplot about his identity is answers with some infodumps near the end, Goro appears and causes problems only to be swept away when he isn’t useful to the story anymore, and most of Kasumi’s and Takuto’s developments become hollow depending on if whether you do the last palace (it isn’t required - I actually would recommend not doing it because it doesn’t add to the plot and is really badly written).

The game also handles teenagers really badly. The game treats them as adults with fan service of girls that are really young, teens being in relationships with adults (like their teachers, the player character can literally date his homeroom teacher), and many of the characters just act like short adults. I feel like the writer wanted this to be about young adults (like in their 20s) but the publishers or something stepped in and made them change it.

So yeah, it is a game with all the best basic gameplay and game style, but it is bogged down by a big story that really slacks in areas.

I would have much rather they cut the crappy new characters (seriously, they all are boring and or badly written) and have had Kasumi as a female protagonist option or removed the graphic changes and made this a switch or pc port. I would have given this a mixed score and not a bad one but it is expensive compared to the original so it isn’t a great game and it is expensive so totally not worth a buy. Expand

It may be almost the same game and the veteran might have to replay the entire game to access the new features (the could have been a DLC), but this game is still a complete standalone package. At no point was this game designed to be sold to people who already played P5, it is our choice to do so and there is no room to complain if you did.
A fair and unbiased review can only mean this is a 10/10 game for most people, for its style, its story and its characters.
This is not a game for you if you don't like
    - a huge ton of dialogues, I'd say about 30 hours worth
    - extremely slow pacing at the beginning, serving to introduce the player into its settings
    - dating multiple girls at once and then having to pay for it
Despite being a 10/10 game for me there are things that bother me personally
    - At its core the battle system does not scale well and lacks the depth necessary for endgame. This causes the player to be vastly overpowered towards the end of the game
    - Ranking up confidants doesn't allow you to be..you. The answers always need to be positive to increase those notes, certain times where I couldn't resist giving that fun answer results in 0 points added

Now to people who platinum-ed P5 and are hesitating:
Yes, in my opinion if you beat P5 on NG+ then this might be quite the commitment to replay the same game again just to access 20 hours. The new content is extremely well written and houses a beautiful palace, yet I will be bold to claim it's not worth it if you were burning out on the second playthrough. I personally did not look forward to having to go through the space ship again or even the pyramid, it just all feels so recent despite being 3 years ago, because P5 simply left that much of an unforgettable impression to me.
    Summary:
10/10 if reviewed just for its game, a must play for all new comers
5/10 if you are burnt out from P5, might just youtube it.

Now the things to warn you about, if you don't like ALOT of cutscenes/text based stuff then its not for you. This game plays out day by day and you interact with different people/things each day. Inbetween palaces you could be doing this for a couple hours. Though there is a dungeon you can do between palaces if you wan't a break from all the talking and just want to get into RPG stuff. This is also a Turn based RPG 100%, there is no real time combat at all. This game is done really well and from a previous persona player i'm stoked they changed it this much but kept the elements of the game and improved it by loads. The old dungeons used to be corridors and boxed rooms. Now its full on creative places that you can explore where each room is different from the last and actually looks like the palace its based on.

    - First, there are a lots, lots of cut-scenes and dialogues, so if you're the kind of player that generally skip those because you find it boring, the game is not for you
    - You are not free to do whatever you want whenever you want, there is a calendar and schedules to respect, it is not like The Witcher 3 for example
    - Combats are turn based like in old school RPGs
    - It takes place in Japan, and you are playing as a japanese student
    - Game length is pretty long (120 to 150 hours for this Royal edition) with a very slow paced that you can't really rush because of the calendar aspect
    - Personae can reminds Pokemons (in a more complex way), as you can collect them and level up them to unlock new abilities, they also have the system of strenghts and weaknesses to various types of element
    - The game often introduce serious matters like abuse, suicide and more, it is not for children despite it's colorful anime graphic style
    - It is difficult to have an opinion based only on the few first hours as the tutorial is very long and new game mechanics can appears even after 25 hours of gameplay
    - Unlike Shin Megami Tensei and other Persona games, this one is very casual friendly, so you don't need to worry about the difficulty even if you're not used to play turn based RPGs, there are 5 different difficulty settings which should satisfied most of the players
    - To roughly sum it up, Persona 5 is a mix between Pokemon and a visual novel (but don't take that too seriously, because i'm myself not a huge fan of Pokemon or visual novels, however i love Persona)

If you're cool with everything i just listed above, you should probably give a try to Persona 5, it is a wonderful Jrpg (probably the best one of this generation) that will keep you busy for a long, long time.

If you didn't play original 5, pick it up. If you already did play 5, wait for a sale unless you actually liked 5. This feels more or less like a casual friendly game in especially when in comparison to other SMT titles. Persona 5 Royal is a step up from the original but not much else.

The best part though about this all was the Strange Journey DLC. Now that was epic. Not to mention Raidou Kuzunoha Outfits, Persona 3 Outfits, Persona 2 Outfits, SMT: IF, SMT:4 and Catherine Outfits are free this time. So you can hear some of the best battle themes now for free. If it wasn't for those I'd lower my score by 1. Some soundtracks are a hit but others are a miss.

It's only fitting that I start this review, like Persona 5 Royal itself, 'in media res'. The highest praise I can give this game is that, 113 hours in and having finished the game, I'm apprehensive about starting all over again. That won't make any sense yet, so let's start over.

I adored Persona 5. It's my only platinum trophy for PS4, and I spent 300 hours and five playthroughs to reach that point. Persona 5 Royal is being marketed as a sort of 'definitive edition', so that's the viewpoint I'll be taking for the purposes of reviewing this, as well as it being an excuse to readily point out that I simply can't review this from a newcomer's perspective due to my longstanding fondness for the Persona series.

The unique feature of current Persona games is its emphasis on interacting with other characters, so let's start there. In terms of improvements, there are a few small details: you can invite people to a couple of new (but ultimately fairly trivial) date spots, a couple of scenes have been very slightly rewritten for either pacing or tonal purposes, and you now sometimes get post-meetup phone calls from the friends with whom you've just been spending time. That may sound unimportant, but it provides an opportunity to boost your friendships more easily, and that's appreciated here.

The reason for that is because you get more time to discover the entirely new friendships: the two main new characters, Kasumi **** and Takuto Maruki. Both shed new light on Persona 5's slightly one-sided moral debate, and given that progressing these social links is imperative for unlocking the new content in semester three, it's reassuring that their interactions with you as the protagonist make you really warm to them.

The same can also be said of the third important factor for the new content, Goro Akechi. His social link is completely rewritten now, and if you progress his story far enough by the time the game catches up to the opening, he becomes an essential part of Persona 5 Royal's unique experience. The developers have clearly paid more attention to Akechi because of the fan sentiment towards him from the original, and whether you liked him or loathed him, his new material means you'll be glad to see a whole lot more of him here.

As well as new characters, there are new areas. The main one that I can touch on without getting into spoiler-territory is Kichijoji, which is unlocked pleasingly early and provides a lot of things to do (Morgana is less insistent on getting your required bed-rest this time around, so you have more time to discover these things). It perhaps feels as though you're a little rail-roaded into getting the most out of Kichijoji due to the benefits of its establishments in Palace exploration, but those benefits are entertaining enough to make me not too concerned about that.

And while Kichijoji's jazz club has me thinking about music: the new soundtrack is just phenomenal. Although the vast majority of the original soundtrack was excellent, there were a few tracks I wasn't so keen on (looking at you, 'Sweatshop'). The new tracks, however, don't have a single weak spot, and indeed hold some of my favourite songs from the franchise to date.

Speaking of finding weaknesses, let's also touch on combat. More complaints have been addressed here, speeding up combat tutorials, increasing the viability (and you'll need it) of status ailments, and even improving the fantastic Baton Pass system. There are also a couple of new features within the Shadows you fight to offer more variety, but to be honest, the combat is a case of 'if it ain't broke...'.

The story, then. It's phenomenal. Though there are a lot of twists and turns, some of which you'll see coming and some of which you won't, they don't feel inserted for the sake of a surprise. Instead, they pull you into a narrative that somehow manages to both escalate and personalise the stakes you're faced with at the end of the base game. It's not just impressive on a technical level, but full of moral quandary and impeccable character development that makes me reluctant to even say that there's a villain for the third semester, only a figure with a convincing moral argument and an extreme stance who is easy to sympathise with and, for me at least, impossible to hate. It's my favourite type of villain: the one who almost isn't.

So why don't I want to play this again right now? Well, with Persona 5 we rebelled off into the metaphorical sunset and it felt easy to visit my friends at the start of their journeys again. Leaving Persona 5 Royal, the journeys have become longer, more complex, and asked some difficult questions of our heroes. They aren't the same people I encountered 113 hours earlier. They are more three-dimensional, more complete, and more affected, and it's very difficult now to go back to what they once were. In a way, that's how I feel about Persona 5 Royal: more complex, more complete, and impossible to go back from.

This is a pretty fun JRPG.

For those of you who's a big fan of JRPG you should give Persona 5 Royal a try. The game is downright charming with it's stylistic art style, amazing soundtrack to unique gameplay and challenging boss fights. But one of the thing I wanted to highlight about the game is how great the story is. All I could said is that this is a game that you would not want to miss if you're a huge JRPG fan or a fan to the persona franchise.

If you never played the orginal persona 5, and you are into RPG, especially JRPGs, this is hundred percent a much buy.
If you played the orginal persona 5, and you loved the orginal game, again a must buy. And if you loved the orginial, (make sure you put the game on hard diffculty)
If you played the origiinal person 5, and you were more indifferent to it or didn't love it, I would pass on this game.
    Longer review:

A lot of the negative reviews for this game come from the fact that they didn't feel that this game was worth the 60 dollar purchase after already buying g the original game. There is definitely plenty of new content, new places to explore new things to do. In my opinion, most of the new things in this game doesn't add that that much to the story line; if you are not a hardcore persona 5 fan. Sure you get a good amoutn of new options, but imo it wasn't significant enough for more casual fans to feel like they're playing a different game. Now, tbf, I wasn't super upset at that becuase I really enjoyed the main game but I can see why some people will take issue. One thing I did dislike was imo a lot of the new content made you even stronger, which kinda makes most of the game easy. I don't think persona 5 orginal was a hard game at all, now it's borderline like super easy. I would say it's almost mandatory for a returning player to play this game on Hard diffculty. Now that value for you will ultimately determine your thoughts on the main game.

On the persona 5 royal extra content, there are some extra content at the end that I really liked, and I really liked how the game ended and stuff. I think these spots were done pretty well by ATLUS. I was glued in the final story moments and thought it was very well done. I won't be more specific because of spoiler concerns. There was a couple spots in Royal that I didn't really like. For example, the new character, Kasumi isn't really playable for tbh a huge portion of the game. and when she was so advertised so hard, I wasn't kinda upset she didn't play a larger role.

Definitely a mustbuy if you liked the orginal, however if you didn't, you can pass on this one. I can understand why some people would think this game is too similar to the orginal and be kinda upset. I don't agree with it, but I can somewhat understand their view point.

The Royal is the opposite of that. The Royal is 'safe'. Every new addition feels like it was it was decided by a room of directors based on what would be popular and not make anyone mad instead of making changes to make the game better. The new gameplay isn't better, it doesn't add something you may have to learn or takes practice or strategy to pull off, it just lowered the games difficulty like this version of the game was aimed at a younger audience by adding stuff like adding new buffs and making crafting items easier. Many of the game additions are just silly minigames and art improvements that are OK but nothing special and feel like they were added to pad things out. The new characters are safe having bland designs and not being very rebellious (except the antagonist, but even he would have been a good guy if he wasn't so forceful and asked before he used his powers on people) and the old characters all have the blandest reactions like the writers were scared people would call them OOC if they did anything new or unexpected. The new palace added at the end feels like it would have been a generic filler episode or arc in an anime instead of being the new finale of a game's remake. The Royal is just P5 with silly additions and an identity crisis and I am disappointed.

Persona 5 Royal allows players to experience the story they already love in a new way without losing any of the beauty from the original game. New and old characters get their chance to shine through and steal your heart, even the ones you never expected to. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and maybe you’ll even feel a sense of justice for the infamous Phantom Thieves in the end. But one thing you won’t feel is regret in picking up Persona 5 Royal, as it’s truly the best Persona title, if not one of the best video games, I’ve ever experienced to date.

All of the new additions and content mean that Persona 5 Royal is a clear upgrade to the original. New players should seek this version without hesitation, although vets may find starting the game over from scratch to be too big an ask. Either way, there’s no doubt that Persona 5 Royal sits proudly on the throne of Peak Persona… or at least it will until Atlus decides they can do even more with it.
