    Pros:
    - Loveable (for the most part), different characters
    - Intriguing story
    - Very well thought-out combat
    - Lots of different options to increase your social stats, so it's not just braindead farming untitl everything is maxed out. You can read books, play video games, go to the gym, the cinema, take part in burger eating competitions and lots of other things.
    - Great enemy design: Apart from bosses pretty much every minor as well as major enemy has a weakness that you can use to either negotiate to make them join you as a Persona for you to use or extort them for money or items. Bosses however are a different thing as most of them don't have a weakness, but you can still inflict status ailments on them and have a chance for a technical which basically works like "hit the weakness" attack, but with a lot more damage under certain circumstances.

    Cons:
    - You can't skip cut- and story scenes, all you can do is fast forward
    - You can revive everyone else, but if your main dies it's game over which is especially annoying in the early parts of the game because enemies can basically one-shot you like this.
    - Some characters join you really late in the game so they're naturally far behind on confidant levels which of course not a game breaker, but still a bit annoying since some of them only stay for a while.

    TL;DR
It's a fanastic game and if you're into turn-based rpgs this is the one where you absolutely get your moneys worth. I've spend well over 200 hours on Persona 5 and my playthroug on Persona 5 Royal will probably also be around 100 hours. Platinum included, but still.

Everything from the characters, the style, the music and the combat instantly clicked with me. Certainly not a flawless masterpiece, but its issues are pretty easy to ignore when everything else is of such high quality. Hearing the announcement of an updated re-release of the game with new content, characters and quality of life changes made excited all over again. I'm happy to say that Persona 5 Royal is still well worth the purchase, especially if you haven't played the original up to this point.

The core story of P5R is essentially the same as last time. You play as a ragtag team of misfits that gain incredible abilities and use them to change the hearts of corrupted adults. You explore various dungeons within an allotted time period, while also juggling your school work and social life. There are many unique additions made to the story, however. There's a new girl in town named Kasumi, a gymnastics prodigy, and Dr. Maruki, the newly hired school councilor. While not going into spoilers, the two slowly begin to play an integral role in the story. There are also new places to explore around the city with new hangout spots for you and your friends, and a few of the characters even have updated arcs that you can engage with. There were even improvements made to the localization and additional dialogue was recorded where needed. Following the completion of vanilla, you will also be treated to an additional month and dungeon, adding on another 10+ hours of gameplay. The same story issues that were present in the original (excessive repetition, forced drama, overly explaining things) are sadly still present in Royal, but they don't ruin what is ultimately an engaging, character-driven narrative filled with some of the most likeable and fun characters in an RPG. Voice acting continues to remain top notch and the incredible soundtrack is still a joy to listen to.

The changes also extend to the gameplay as well. As far as dungeons are concerned, they aren't too heavily modified outside of the addition of grappling hooks (which honestly don't add to much but does aid in sneaking up on enemies), and hidden Will Seeds that you can collect and exchange later for items. Battles, on the other hand, have received a noticeable upgrade. The baton pass mechanic that allows you to switch to other party members after exploiting a weakness is now unlocked from the get-go rather than building up confidants with each party member to unlock them. There are also several new stylish showtime attacks where two party members can pull of a powerful, often ridiculous finisher that can deal serious damage to enemies. The combat was already great before, but these additions make it all that much sweeter. The Velvet Room has also received a few new upgrades. There's a new Alarm fusion mechanic where, every time an alarm goes off, you have the chance to fuse together more powerful personas. The catch here is that you can only perform each type of fusion once before things start to get unpredictable. There are also additional challenges you can complete in the Velvet Room that offer additional rewards. The procedurally generated dungeon Mementos introduces Jose, a kid that will offer you items and buffs in exchange for flowers and stamps scattered about (as well as the aforementioned Will Seeds). He's not really integral to the story, he's simply there to make exploration and leveling up much easier while you're down there. Max out EXP percentage gain as early as possible. It will make level grinding so much easier. Sad to say, however, that you can no longer cheese the Reaper (boo).

Persona 5 Royal is everything that made the original great made even better. It is by far the best version of the game, and anybody who hasn't already experienced it should definitely do so, especially if this is your first time experiencing the game. It remains as one of the best RPGs of its generation, and high bar for other JRPGs to meet.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Royal was a great expansion for the game that fixes many of the smaller problems of the game while adding in a new section of the game. These fixes include Will Seeds, Jose in Mementos, and more opportunities to level up social stats. While I agree that $60 for a rerelease that doesn't add in $60 worth of content isn't worth it for many people. but I don't consider price point as a factor for the quality of a game. The new character additions were a great add, but I'm sure many wished for more time with her and Akechi than what was actually given.

Speaking of fixes, the Will Seeds were great for people who liked to complete the palace in a single day, and were great to add in different effects as an accessory too. Mementoes in the original game felt boring and just another activity to put off, but in Royal they completely fixed that by Jose's stamp system allowing easy XP and money when combined with Ryuji's Instakill ability. The grappling hook was a nice addition, but served no significant purpose other than just a style factor. Furthermore, the addition of persona traits truly appeals to players who love fusing to create the perfect powerhouse persona. Along with that, the new battle mechanics such as disaster shadows, an improved technical damage system, baton pass improvements, and showtimes were all wonderful additions to the game.

Maruki was a well-designed villain that really differed against the typical targets of the Phantom Thieves. He added a nice ambiguity of a moral decision of fake happiness. The added music in his palace truly fits with his theme and the music added just from Royal only supplemented the emotional ideology within Maruki. His ideology with the struggles of the team really created an internal struggle within the player.

I am glad I was too lazy to buy Persona 5 when it came out, because this version feels so amazing. I haven't really gotten far enough to review the story itself. All the characters are pretty likable, though I do kinda dislike that damn cat, but that's a personal thing. The combat is really fun, exploration is about on par with other persona games I've played. I feel that if I'd actually played P5 I might review this abit lower, I've talked to a friend who has played both and he's not as sold on Royal, but as a new-comer to this game, I think it's amazing. Music, story, graphics, style, all of it so far is pretty on point, there are a few little nit-picks I have here and there, but they're so small, they really don't take anything away from the game as a whole. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here's what most people say: "Oh! Persona 5 is the best game in the series! This game is a must buy! You must play it. The characters are memorable and the story is amazing!"
    Here's me: "Persona 2, 3, and 4 is better."

I'm sorry, but I can't stand people kissing the game's butt for being the Greatest Game of All Time. Because honestly, it's one of the most overhyped and overrated Persona game in the series. Not to say it's bad, it's an alright persona game, but not the best one in the series.

    Pros:
    Soundtrack:
Let's start with the soundtrack. Every persona games has a theme in their series. Persona 3 was rap and Persona 4 was J-Pop. In Persona 5, the game's theme this time is Jazz. And I gotta say. Some of the soundtracks are very catchy, if not, better than Persona 3 and 4. Even the battle theme Last Surprise, which it has become a meme to death and you'll never get it out of your head.

    Gameplay:
There's one thing that I will admit is that the gameplay has improved drastically, if not, the best in the series. No more you have to fight blob-like enemies in combat. This time, you get to fight and make a great return of battling traditional demons from the previous SMT games & Persona 1 & 2. This feels a big breath of fresh air to the series since they were absent from Persona 3 & 4. All I can say is that I'm glad they're back. And with 3 new elements: Psychic, Nuke, and Gun. These are great new additions to the game and they're welcomed.

    Art Style:
This game has drastically got an improved art style starting from character sprites, to character portrats, to animation. These are visually impressive upgrade from the P3 & P4 era.

    Cons:
    Characters:
Now that we got the positives out of the way, let's get to the negatives. Starting with the characters. I absolutely HATED these characters. All of them are unlikable comparing to characters from previous Persona games. Persona 3's characters made you feel sympathetic. Persona 4's characters made you feel light hearted and always give you a big smile. Persona 5's characters are terrible, so bad that it makes me want to grab them from the screen and punch them, mostly Ryuji because he won't shut up & keep on exposing themselves they're the Phantom Thieves.

    Story:
I gotta say this up front. Persona 5's story has the WORST story in the series. At least for the main story. Because in the Royal's story, there was new content that wasn't in the original. And honestly, it should've focused on THAT STORY because it's at least original and had a better plot twist instead of the actual main story and Maruki is a better villain and an unexpected plot twist than Yaldabaoth. But nowhere near as iconic as Adachi nor Nyx. As for the main story, and I'm gonna say this without triggering you. The story of Persona 5 feels like a rehash of Persona 4. They reused the same idea as Persona 3 & 4: someone who works at school dies, a member of your group is the traitor, the final boss is a god it's the same. And it's tiring. At least Royal did something new. Also, the game has a number of plot holes. Like, the arc with Madarame. They've found legitimate proof that the art has been plargiarized & abused his students. Why didn't they use this proof to the police? I guess plot convenience?

    Overall:
All I can say this: Persona 3 has better Story. Persona 4 has the best characters. And Persona 5 has the best gameplay. Persona 2 is the best of both worlds, but Persona 2 was a very outdated game that I can't count it. While it's not the worst in the series, I think it's not the best either. I enjoyed it, but not like other Persona games.

However, if you have PLAYED the original, I suggest waiting for sale. The overall experience is similar to the original with a few story additions and changes. There is no point in buying P5R full price. The quality of life in the game's biggest improvement.

Persona 5 was something akin to the FF7 of the modern day. Revolutionizing a genre with a creative world and story. Where P5 fell short, Royal picks it up and delivers the underlining theme of Plato's cave with something that hits closer to home than the original edition. Kichijoji is a nice addition on the already numerous places you can visit (The Darts is my favorite), Maruki and "Kasumi" is a good addition to the game. Thieves den gives a pretty good reward for completing the game and certain achievements with the interaction between characters and the Tycoon minigame makes the place not lacking in content. And the new dungeon are the best out of all dungeons in Persona 5 Royal. Of course this game isn't without criticism. First, what makes Persona 5 bad is still here. Yes, Morgana is still as annoying as ever but they've toned down the annoyance to make it more bearable. But the story is still the same, even the Okumura arc is still terrible compared to the others. Also, the new part of the story distorts the original meaning of the story. The story now feel less about reforming society and more abut self-freedom. Which is a good and a bad thing. The good part is that the ending gives the original story an fresh update over the original story. The bad part is that now the story feels off compared to the rest of the arc. The DLC is TERRIBLE! Please even if you want to. It's just not worth it. For ANOTHER $60 you just got the Costume and the Battle Trial is not even worth it. So do yourself a favor and just download the original P5 DLC. And the last part is the technical of the game. It's still Persona 5. That means the game is still a PS3 game in it's heart, and it shows. While yes the game runs at 4K on Pro, the lack of anti aliasing on the 3d element and the 30fps cap on the game makes it kinda lazy. But then again the art is so gorgeous that the problem kinda being offset a little. Still whether you like it or not, the improvements that this game brings to the table makes it worth it for new players and veterans to play. Yeah the original problem is still there but the new stuff and improvements makes this game truly, the definitive Persona 5 Royal. But it left one thing, What about the original? Well, if you've played the game while the improvements are very nice, it still not that necessary especially when the price of Royal is ~$60. Whereas the original is $20. My final verdict is pick it up if you're new to the series, but for everyone else. That's it for my review and see you later. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is an absolute masterpiece. It fixed a majority of the problems with base game persona 5. The added semester is absolutely brilliant. Doctor Maruki is a phenomenal antaganist with a heart wrenching backstory. His palace is almost akin to a Shin Megami Tensei dungeon but the best part of this game by far is the music. Throw your mask away is one of the best songs I've ever heard period. This is definitely a must buy if you are a fan of JRPG's. Expand

Very solid game that adds on to the base game, definitely worth for the new additions, The final semester of the game is brilliant and the final boss is even more so. The anime cutscenes still look like garbage unfortunately but the brilliant music, characters, voice acting, story and gameplay loop make up for it tenfold.

I have never loved a group of video game characters more than the ones in this game; Akechi, Ryuji, Futaba, Makoto, and Morgana are favorites, but the other characters are still great. I won't spoil how, but the counselor, Maruki, is one of my favorites also. It wasn't until I played/watched the whole game, including the new semester (you have to level up Maruki's confidant scale and other things to access it, so look up a non-spoiler guide beforehand), that I loved his character though. I was surprised when I found out he wasn't in the original game (not even as a small role). Overall, I would highly recommend playing or at least watching this game (I found out after quitting and deleting the game that safe mode might fix the problems I had with checkpoints, so maybe play on that if you're like me (I usually play games on normal or hard)). If it had simplified the graphics like a visual novel like Persona 3 portable or waited for the PS5’s release to take advantage of more powerful hardware and updated all the models to have better physics and animations or crisper cutscenes I’d be giving and 8 or a 9 out of 10, but it doesn’t. The new story part isn’t great and the new characters are pretty unlikeable once you find out their true personalities near the end but the in-battle tweaks are nice, just add that comment to any reviews of the original game and that’s royal for ya.

This version is the same as the old one but with cheap upgrades like brighter graphics, poorly integrated new characters that don’t effect the plot and only become important in an optional semester, and mini games that you’ll play once and never touch again.

However the new arc is, without a doubt, the best arc in the whole game and is definitely worth waiting for. It has the biggest surprises, the best palace, and best new party members. While it's not a huge upgrade I anticipated it to be, Persona 5 Royal is a damn great package for newcomers, but can be quite a task for newcomers. But personally, I loved almost every moment with the Phantom Thieves again, and with the newcomers. Congrats Phantom Thieves, you've stolen my heart.
TL;DR The Third Semester is the best part of the game, but it will take a lot of patience to reach it. Essential for those who haven't played the OG P5, but can be exhausting for those who played the OG. Overall, a great package.

I am a huge persona fan, even playing through the first 3 games, which are just persona 1 and 2 yada yada doesn't matter. Point is: I played through all of em and persona 5 was just not what I thought it was going to be. Of the new age persona’s, that being 3 and up, I thought that 5 was the weakest link. As a result of which, I was pleasantly surprised by Royal which I think changed alot of what I hated about P5. However, the controversy comes from if these changes warrant a 60 dollar game, and hopefully I will be able to answer that question in this video. As always, I rate my games on a 3 point rating and purchasing scale, and that grade is justified by the four categories of gameplay, art, music and story, with some intangibles thrown in at the end. The gameplay is very similar to that of the first game, with the key differences now being some quality of life changes in the sense of the guns and bullet usage, and morgana allowing freedom. These changes definitely sparked a vast improvement, and while they made me feel a little bit more OP than the first title, but the challenge is still there especially on the harder difficulties and later game content. When it comes to the art, this is not a 10, this is THE 10. This is the poster child for what art should look like in games of this caliber, the art is smooth, beautiful, not overbearing and adds to the ambiance of the setting and characters. So when it comes to the music, there are definitely some changes from the first game. There are more tracks now, and there's a new preemptive strike song called take over, I didn't like it at first to be quite honest but now im in love with it. Last surprise has remained as the main battle theme, for those of you that love the original work. The acid jazz adds to the ambience as well, and its lovely to see that the Persona series has continued that music style. Finally is the story, which is largely the same up until the new added content that you unlock by doing certain social links. The new social links definitely provide really good background, development and depth to the characters, but it still may be the weakest story of the new gen personas. The big controversy of this game is something I want to get to now: and that being if it is worth it being a new standalone title and not just some DLC expansion type. The new thieves den mechanic is alot of fun and great for completionists like myself to get statues and music of the events. The biggest issue with this is that you cant see your friends, so you cant really flex off your work. Besides that, theres the new added trimester which does add gameplay and some new characters as well, but it is very hard to say if it warrants a new 60 dollar purchase.
After weighing everything, my final consensus is this: if you haven't played the original, this is the copy to get. Its advancements are noticeable from the first work, but if you have you can just watch the new content on Youtube and get the same experience. All in all, Persona 5 Royal was a very enjoyable experience, but the issue of it being a full standalone title remains. Its a solid 8.8/10, and I very much enjoyed it over the original, even if I do think that Persona 4 Golden is the better game all in all.

First, is it fun? And you bet your bottom dollar it is! Battles are engaging, and at times challenging. Persona fusion is a process of trial and error, but it's fun trial and error. It's fun to explore Japan and listen in on conversations and current events. You want to explore palaces completely because of how beautiful they are. As far a RPGs go, this is certainly one of the more fun titles.

Does it have a good story? Again, the story for this game is beautiful. While I can't go into detail here to keep the review spoiler-free, my opinion is that the story alone is worth the price of admission.

Are the characters memorable? Here I have a bit of contention. While the characters are indeed memorable in their own right, most of the characters' names blend for me. Most of characters stick in my mind as 'the reporter girl', or 'that evil teacher guy' until I get to know them better. Certainly enough to remember their faces, but their names, not so much. It might have something to do with the names being exotic for me.

Are the graphics good? While I wouldn't call it 'state of the art', It's still quite pleasing to look at. The anime aesthetic is quite beautiful, but that same style prevents it from being a graphical masterpiece. The menus are a joy to thumb through, though.

Is it replayable? While I haven't done so yet, I plan on replaying the game soon. There are so many ways to play the game that each playthrough is different. Will you focus on your relationships with other characters or your social stats? Which characters will you from close bonds with, and in what order? There's so much to do in this game, and I can't wait to do it all!

I feel that some people just judge the Royal changes on its own, rather than examining the changes and additions to the base Persona 5. As Persona 5 Royal is an elevated experience prior to its vanilla counterpart.

The changes to have more freedom at night and adjustment with dates to include more events and free days allow you to experience more that Royal has to to offer. The inclusion of the new Kichijoji is the prime example, that also alludes to deeper gameplay mechanics, as the technical and baton pass system have been reworked, and in turn weakness exploits slightly nerfed, to make them more rewarding in battle. In which all of these are locked behind darts and billiards which are both enjoyable experiences in-game.

While Persona 5 Royal can feel superficially the same, there are subtle areas that have been tweaked as quality of life, or better gameplay. For example, as stated the technical damage buffs now encourage you to find persona with ailment skills so you can trigger technicals. Which thus makes Ann a reasonable choice to keep when Yusuke joins the party, and it also makes Makoto better as she gets more value from her ailment apart from her already versatile kit. Speaking of Yusuke, he falls of in the vanilla game due to not have a charge ability unlike Ryuji, but because of the Jazz club he can learn charge and thus not fall off as much in the later stages of the game. Little changes like this provide far-reaching ramifications that may not be noticed straight away, and since Royal is filled with small changes, all it does is make the Persona 5 experience even greater than what it already was.

The style still holds true but the new music tracks help to further provide a fresh experience. The integration of Kasumi and Maruki are fantastic and adds new colour to the already stellar cast. Their stories are intriguing they have admirable personalities as well as great designs.
The third semester or the real Royal content really hit different. It was seamlessly incorporated and masterfully executed, with the idea of finding your true reality being extremely profound and had me taking a break to ponder for a bit, before ultimately playing the game to seek answers and cure my angst. I loved that Maruki's persona originated from the Cthulhu Mythos then Jewish mysticism, both inciting topics for further research.

Persona 5 Royal is a masterful tale of staying true to your beliefs and reality and doing what you can to make things right. Persona 5 Royal is legendary JRPG experience.

One of the best JRPGs I've ever played. P5 was very good, but P5R surpasses it. Must play!!

it´s a wonderful game - one of the only reasons why i would buy a ps4 and if ATLUS would release the next game like as a ps5 release title, i would instantly buy a ps5 just for that sole reason.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you were a fan of the original Persona 5, then this game is definitely for you! The plot doesn’t change much up until the new 3rd semester, but there are a lot of new minor additions and expansions that make this game experience much better. The only reason I didn’t rate this a perfect 10 out of 10 is because of the “animated” ending. I don’t understand why the final boss is a taxi driver in the end and also if you were like me and romanced the new character, she isn’t there on the last day and acts like she doesn’t know you in the ending which was a little weird considering how much screen time she got with extra scenes throughout the game. Other than the questionable animated ending, this game was perfect. Expand

Not worth buying if you already have the original. While the battles have lots of good upgrades, the story is barely changed so if you are already familiar with it this game becomes a slog to get through again. The new semester is also much shorter than expected as well as there being a lot of dlc that really should have been part of the main game. Persona 5 Royal allows players to experience the story they already love in a new way without losing any of the beauty from the original game. New and old characters get their chance to shine through and steal your heart, even the ones you never expected to. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and maybe you’ll even feel a sense of justice for the infamous Phantom Thieves in the end. But one thing you won’t feel is regret in picking up Persona 5 Royal, as it’s truly the best Persona title, if not one of the best video games, I’ve ever experienced to date.

This is not more of the same, this is not an optional add-on to the original game. This, my friends, is the perfect experience, down to the last letter, down to the last minute. Persona 5 Royal is a Japanese crown jewel.

All of the new additions and content mean that Persona 5 Royal is a clear upgrade to the original. New players should seek this version without hesitation, although vets may find starting the game over from scratch to be too big an ask. Either way, there’s no doubt that Persona 5 Royal sits proudly on the throne of Peak Persona… or at least it will until Atlus decides they can do even more with it.
