This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My original 2 score was way too harsh, so here to amend that. A middle score is unusual for me, I either normally love it, or it wasted my time.

It is not that it is bad, it just isn't very good either.

The worst bit by far is the crappy American voice overs and the dialogue. It is just so bad. I find it very cringey a hell of a lot of the time.

The art style just isn't that good. It quite simply looks ugly.

The music is 70's porn music. The story is slow. The enemy design is poor.

It feels clunky in everything it does.

The combat is mildly entertaining but not great. So if I dislike so many things then why a 5 score? It has had a lot of love and care put in to it. Someone, or some team have worked hard. It's just that the team is probably a team of boring people. It isn't dark, it isn't happy, it is just very plain.

It is a real trawl, everything feels so dragged out. I am often playing for 15 minutes, getting bored and trying to get to a suitable save place asap.

It certainly never has me staying up until 3 in the morning unable to put it down.

I don't hate it but just as BotW is the most over rated game on Switch, this is a very overated PS4 game.

    It just isn't much fun.

I would rate this a 10 except for the fact that the free DLC allows you to get some OP personas early game, which might ruin the experience by making some bits too easy. Just put them away and problem solved.

Beautiful game, really sets the themes of forgiveness, compassion, and the potential of us as humans to grow from pain. Really fun JRPG, testing your ability to work on your builds and strategize to use them in battles; you also get an incredibly soundtrack to accompany those adrenaline-inducing encounters. The RPG element combined with the story and the setting had me hooked for a solid +100 hrs.

This is probably the most overrated game I've ever played in my whole life.
As a jrpg is functional, of course, but if you are going to see the poorly graphics (coming from PS3) that the games brings from this edition, it's hard to see how this game is reached the values of other games like TloU2, for example.

Most reviewers rate this game at a solid 10-a true masterpiece. However, I would go beyond that and call this game genre-defining. Arguably the greatest JRPG ever made, the level of meticulous detail and painstaking effort put into this game makes it nothing less than a labor of love built upon an existing 25-year foundation of a masterclass in storytelling. The criticisms of the game including its somewhat lackluster squad in comparison to previous entries and often long-winded plot sequences are valid but pale in comparison to the conscientious amount of work put into the game. Atlus manages to perfectly encapsulate the nuances of daily life and the realism of its plot sequences into a perfect blend of daily life as well as doubling as a Phantom Thief. The game presents one of the most interesting antagonists in the series whilst simultaneously retaining the fantasy aspect through the presentation of bosses that fit within the series lore. Atlus's aim to take their series to cosmic dimensions lands perfectly at the heart of the series and makes it difficult for any contemporary game to compare. If a modern JRPG even manages to reach 50% of what Persona 5 Royal has achieved, it would be a major success in my eyes. I truly do feel that the game is ahead of its time and it will only be properly appreciated in the coming years. Expand

Although the game is very long since I had to play 170 hours of play, those 170 hours are too entertaining and you do not feel that it has been wasted time, you are left wanting more since the game manages to make you be inside the game

It doesn't matter if you don't know anything about a person or you've never played their games, the game will still make you enjoy it.

This version is totally definitive since apart from more content it implements more things and the new character is quite endearing, and thank heavens it added the Spanish language which is the language that I speak so it was quite pleasing on the part of the developers already that this was something that was criticized in Latin America and Spain.

In conclusion: what are you waiting for to buy it?

This can be one of the best JRPG you can ever play. If you didn't play Persona 5 Original before.

Everything about P5 Royal is with updated system and gameplay. Some bad and some has been changed due to new stories been added.

To first timers, this isn't much of an issue. Gameplay changed much easier and faster for those new comers. I don't see much of problem with that.

However, real issue I encountered was frustration playing the Royal.

I think those who already finished the original P5 wanted to see how the additional character fits in with already perfect P5 characters. There was really high expectation of new girl who's dancer name Kasumi(Sumire ;)p)). Well? It really pissed me off and made me angry at Atlus for the first time.
This really showed how not to just add somebody just to sell more copies of your game.

Kasumi is attractive and pretty girl and had very high expectation, but Atlus just didn't seem to know when to utilize her character in this game.

They let you play her very little in the end and decided not let you play her at all until the end.

Yes, of course P5 we already experience who's the final and the real boss is and what memento is for. P5 Royal plays out the same and by the time they let you play Kasumi, you will be just tired to play this long game. your line up for the boss is already perfect and there will be no room for low leveled Kasumi and Akechi fits in. All the items and equipments are already planned out and your mind is already done with this game by the time Atlus let you play her.

Me? I just put her in my bench and never looked back. I skipped through boring dialogues and was hoping to reach March to end the game.

I gave 10/10 on Original P5 and loved the characters and even bought Strikers.

I'm hoping I won't fall for P6 updated version after release of original.

Atlus just doesn't respect those who already purchased first game.

Persona 5 Royal was my first playthrough of the Persona 5 story. After the introduction of Joker in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, I played through Persona 4 to get into the franchise before I went into the latest title.
Persona 5 Royal despite being a long 200+ hour journey, provides an amazing unforgettable experience. The amazing soundtrack combined with the beautiful art style creates an unforgettable atmosphere unique to the Persona 5 game series, breathing new life into the traditional turn-based JRPG.
The story has its dull tedious moments early on that left me taking breaks from the game for months on end, there are certain parts of the game that feel like the player must force themselves to get through. However despite this, after reaching the end of the third palace, I found myself loving each and every one of the characters and becoming actually engaged with the story. Toward the end of the game, I had become so invested in the story and so attached to the characters that from the final boss-fight to the end credits I was constantly in tears. Every single character, especially the two main antagonists received major character development throughout the story and allowed the player to feel empathy for their situations despite their goals to stand against your party and everything you've fought for.
The gameplay felt as if they had drastically updated the old turn-based JRPG combat that games such as Dragon Quest and Pokemon have started to wear out. Many new simple mechanics make combat less of a chore in between story moments and more like proper full-fledged gameplay.
The difficulty is a major issue with this game, having played on hard difficulty (merciless makes the game way too easy for a harder difficulty) I found this game incredibly easy. I feel as if this game deserves a harder difficulty for those used to the combat system from previous games or those returning for a second playthrough. Though despite that, the main focus of the game comes from storytelling elements as opposed to challenging combat.
Overall this game is an amazing experience that quickly shot itself to become my favorite game of all time, its only drawbacks come from its length and difficulty. To any fans of visual novels or other story-heavy games, I believe this is a must-play provided you have the 200 hours to spare.

An obvious cashgrab that is reflected in my score. The original Persona 5 for me is at least a 9/10.

Atlus seems to fund itself solely by milking their franchises, and for as much flak as companies like Ubisoft get, let's get real, even they didn't do dancing game spin-offs of their flagship titles. This is probably the most disgusting practice from Atlus, the constant release of braindead and cashgrab games that serve no purpose than to milk people for their love of series like SMT and Persona.

In any case, this expansion brings a new social confidant, a few months of gameplay and a new palace, as well as new demons and a new party member.

Is it worth the god damn full price release? Absolutely not. What a shameful practice.
Is it even worth buying if you already did everything in Persona 5? Unless you're a huge Personadrone, absolutely not. By the time I got to the Sixth Palace in P5, I was already skipping dialogue (they went with quantity over quality for sure), especially the Text messages and the overused and ridiculous chit chat involving the "Oh no, the deadline is coming, do you think everything will work out? :OOO". It's repetitive, uninspired, and lacks a lot of care for it. So, why would I want three more months of that?
Especially when the same problems still exist for the gameplay: you either grind to death in palaces before leaving them, or you waste your days in Mementos grinding lower leveled enemies. It's not as engaging as SMT's gameplay, nor does it have any fun mechanics like some of the SMT spin-offs.

This is just Persona 5 with a little bit more content, but when the original is already a dragged out game that can last upwards of 80 hours just playing normally, are you really gonna manage 100 hours of repetitive dialogue, especially knowing that every palace that arrives, a new character joins you and the older cast members either become caricatures or are completely forgotten?

If you' haven't played P5, buy this version as it's the most complete one out there. And yes, if you haven't played it, it's worth it even at 40 bucks. If you've played P5 already, this should be a 10 buck upgrade at most. Comparing this to let's say, TW3 Blood & Wine expansion... Oof, what a disappointment this was.

P5R is a good game. A very good game, most of the time. But there's so much of it -- too much of it. It took me over 100 hours to get to the final boss, and by that time I had stopped caring. No doubt die-hard fans will claim this is my fault, or that I don't 'understand' Persona, but I think it's a valid problem.

No doubt die-hard fans will claim this is my fault, or that I don't 'understand' Persona, but I think it's a valid problem.

The basic overworld-underworld setup is well-executed and fun, once you get past the early tutorials. The teenagers v adults conspiracy story is a bit predictable, but elevated by the RPG tasks of improving your characters at school so they can fight demons in the parallel universe. You have a limited amount of time to study, hang out, side-hustle and build relationships, and it's here that the game really comes alive. There are lots of NPCs and activities to engage with, and they suck you in.

It's in the dungeon worlds that things become progressively less interesting, though. The idea of battling villains in their own egomaniacal mental palaces is great, but in practice too repetitive. It involves jumping from hiding place to hiding place, working your way up to the boss and collecting 'Personas' along the way (a mix of Pokemon and Final Fantasy Summons). There are a few stand-out palaces -- Madarame's, or the casino -- but many others are bland, like the bank vault or spaceship.

And that's not even counting the grindfest that is the eternally winding Mementos dungeon. A chore.

I don't want to dwell on the negatives here, because so much of the main game is enjoyable -- well-designed, well-animated, with a lot to do. The game for me is a solid 8/10. But in my view, a game that's more than 100 hours has to really justify it, and I think at least 20 hours could have been cut with zero downside. This isn't a masterpiece, nor a classic in my view, but a very very good JRPG.

I put in far more than 500 hours with repeated playthroughs not counting the original P5 release. Having that said, if one played P5 initially, this isn't worth an upgrade for full price though by now that prolly won't matter since the market price is down due it's age but all still or all the more reason to get.
The graphics are good enough, controls are sweet, given it's round based battle anyway and you have some strategizing to do while playing without asking too much of players. The gameplayloop is invigorating to addictive and you have tons of options or rather reasons to replay it with a different approach although on your first round the bosses might give you more trouble then they worth it but there is always New Game + and it is so satisfying to steamroll anything that gave you trouble before int consequent playthroughs.

Really, I can't get enough of the Phantom Thieves and would love to follow them to college in another game before moving on to Persona 6. Though I know this won't happen. A short mentioning of Strikers, I won't fully review it here and it was sad, it play in the P5 universe instead of the P5 Royal universe and while it was nice to travel with the Phantom thieves in that one, it was much more of a hassle and not so encouraging to replay.

Ultimately I just say, if you like J-RPGs or are just curious since you heard so much of it, go for it NOW, even if your not too inclined to this kind of games it's still worth to look at. I would say it's a must have and must play for anyone that appreciates J-RPGs.

How much it impacted me throughout my teenage years and helped me with my struggles? How it expanded my horizons and introduced me to JRPGs, some of my favorite games, Anime and Japanese Culture?... The characters I met in this game, they felt real and very relatable in many ways, they gave me a place to stay and I felt like I belonged somewhere. The things they all go through really hit me right in the feels, I cheered for them and their motivation to keep going forward and I wanted them to succeed because I was a part of them. Now, for the story, the game touches some very serious and dark themes such as abusing the weak, depression & insecurities, greed for power, anthropology and how humans think & act, carving your own path in society, making your dreams come true by achieving them and not giving up, which in my eyes is one of the most compelling & deep stories I've ever experienced. Personally this game really helped me with my social anxiety and gave me the motivation to escape from it, as someone who just became an adult, I finally have a goal in my life. Enough for the story, let's talk about the flawless combat system, which in my opinion is the most advanced turn based game I've ever experienced, from the very satisfying and fast paced combat mechanics to the masterfully crafted animations, this is a very enjoyable game even for those who aren't into turn based games. As for the social simulator aspect, it's my favorite part of the game, bonding with the characters and experiencing their stories, helping them with their problems, gaining new abilities that enhance the combat mechanics, you can definitely see the effort that was put into the game. I also want to talk about the super stylish animations which are very charming & exciting to look at, the art style is the best I've ever seen period, no other game has such style as this one, from the Showtimes, All-Out Attacks, and special abilities to the menus, everything looks absolutely stunning, and even the in-game animations share this "comic book" art style that fits perfectly into the game, aswell as for the music, which is easily the best soundtrack I've ever heard, not a single song that I don't like, I literally listen to the game's music everyday, it became a part of my life. I think this is everything I wanted to say about this masterpiece of a videogame, it's a very long, emotional & unforgettable journey. Expand

I used to not be a big fan of JRPG's because I thought that they were pretty grindy and the story felt very similar throughout a lot of them. Persona 5 Royal changed that for me. The story is very interesting, and the characters are extremely likable. Even the ones that a lot of people dislike I think have a lot of interesting things about them. The music is persona, so I shouldn't have to say too much. Bottom line, it's incredible and the soundtrack is worth the price of admission alone. The gameplay was the main thing that surprised me. I played on normal mode, and I had a fun, but very fair challenge that kept me invested throughout the whole time. The visual style also has this "pop" to it that I absolutely adore. You kind of need to see it to understand, but it is super cool to look at. The most impressive thing to me is all I did was fight the enemies I saw for the first time, and did barely any grinding, which I appreciate very much. I honestly don't think that this game is flawless, but a 10/10 score for me isn't about being flawless. It's about having positives that far outweigh the negatives of something to the point where I am able to look past it because of how amazing the rest of the game is. That is what Persona 5 Royal is to me. It is quite possibly my favorite game of all time, and I can't recommend it to you enough. If you're a fan of JRPG's, this is a must-play. If you aren't a fan of JRPG's, I still recommend you give this game a shot because I used to be like you, but after playing this game, my opinion is completely different. The game is identical to the original Persona 5. They just added a few scenes and lowered the difficulty by a lot. It's still good, but don't waste your time if you've already played the og version. Oh, and new content is locked behind leveling up bonds with specific confidants. So, there is a huge chance you'll miss like 30% of the game.

I dropped my first playthrough about 50 hours in because I got distracted by something else, and by the time I decided to pick it up again, I barely remembered what was going on. By then, I figured I'd wait for Royal to come out (as well as the PS5 for a better experience).

By the time I finally beat the game (110+ hours in - went for the platinum trophy, which can be obtained in a single playthrough with some planning), I was both overjoyed (because this easily toppled both my contenders to my favorite game) and sad (because the journey was over and I would never be able to experience it again for the first time).

It's not a game for everyone. The pacing is slow, there's a LOT of dialogue and it's a turn-based RPG / dungeon crawler, which are indeed somewhat niche genres. However, if that sounds like something you'd enjoy, by all means play this game. It's one of the most amazing stories I've ever experienced.

Upon finishing the game, I immediately picked up Persona 5 Strikers - which, despite being a significantly different game, is a great opportunity to get some more time with the characters and the world of Persona 5 that will definitely grow on you.

As a remastered version of 2017’s Persona 5, the Persona 5 Royal in-game experience is vastly different between first-time players and players that have already experienced the original game. For people who have played the original, it’s easy to gravitate towards the new or reworked content because it’s clearly different from what someone might’ve played before. As someone who has played Persona 5, I almost always chose to spend time with a new confidant over a confidant whose story I had already gone through before. Without the cultural capital of Persona 5 — the knowledge of what is new or what is different from before — a new player might not necessarily gravitate towards the new content, which includes requirements to unlock more new content. Players who have played Persona 5 will likely also view the story differently, as they will spend a significant part of the game replaying scenes from the original and thinking about the meaning of those scenes retrospectively. Many of the most exciting moments of the earlier parts of the game were when there was clear foreshadowing to the original ending or even small changes in the details of a boss battle or a scene that had just been slightly reworked. Luckily, both perspectives make for an enjoyable experience. For first-time players, there’s the appeal of having the opportunity to get the full Persona 5 experience upfront. Persona 5 Royal feels complete, while, at least in retrospect, Persona 5 feels incomplete knowing what was to come. However, the previous knowledge gained from the original feels like a crucial part of enjoying the small details, changes, and improvements made. Overall, I am very happy that I played Persona 5 Royal and would highly recommend the game for everyone, especially people who have played the original Persona 5. Expand

Updates to the battle system such as Baton Pass and bullets that regenerate after battle are a godsend and make the resource management of the game a bit less frustrating, only becoming a real problem at the beginning of the last palace in the game. The new characters are absolutely fantastic, and the added story to one of the most interesting characters of the game is interesting enough on it's own to justify this version of the game.

The game is definitely easier than the original, and people used to the genre should probably play it on Hard mode to enjoy the gameplay more. That said there are a couple of bosses that are shockingly hard compared to the others, but it's not so bad that it takes away from the overall experience.

New additions such as will seeds and the grappling hook make the palaces flow much better, and the new characters provide added depth to the social sim aspect of the game that rounds off the game much better than in the original version of the game.

All in all this is a complete masterpiece, and I can't wait to see what Atlus does with the 6th game in the franchise, when they finally move on to a current gen console.

A truly wonderful masterpiece, though i rated it 9.6 but even 10/10 suits such a game.

Easily my favorite game. Negative reviews aren't warranted because they are comparing just differences to the original persona 5, and for $80 those changes probably aren't worth it to most people, but absolutely was worth it for me. The added story is 10/10, with huge quality of life changes.

Completely creative UI, It's fun to see.
The non-fighting part gets boring over time.
Nevertheless, the game nature that keeps you immersed.

Persona 5 Royal allows players to experience the story they already love in a new way without losing any of the beauty from the original game. New and old characters get their chance to shine through and steal your heart, even the ones you never expected to. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and maybe you’ll even feel a sense of justice for the infamous Phantom Thieves in the end. But one thing you won’t feel is regret in picking up Persona 5 Royal, as it’s truly the best Persona title, if not one of the best video games, I’ve ever experienced to date.

This is not more of the same, this is not an optional add-on to the original game. This, my friends, is the perfect experience, down to the last letter, down to the last minute. Persona 5 Royal is a Japanese crown jewel.

All of the new additions and content mean that Persona 5 Royal is a clear upgrade to the original. New players should seek this version without hesitation, although vets may find starting the game over from scratch to be too big an ask. Either way, there’s no doubt that Persona 5 Royal sits proudly on the throne of Peak Persona… or at least it will until Atlus decides they can do even more with it.
