Overwatch is a fun game but it's a little overhyped. For starters, the lack of a story mode and the inclusion of microtransactions in a paid title, are something that seem to have been completely overlooked by the games journalists. Now, none of these are dealbreakers in my book. Other games have launched with no story and sadly microtransactions are a part of our lives now. TheOverwatch is a fun game but it's a little overhyped. For starters, the lack of a story mode and the inclusion of microtransactions in a paid title, are something that seem to have been completely overlooked by the games journalists. Now, none of these are dealbreakers in my book. Other games have launched with no story and sadly microtransactions are a part of our lives now. The microtransactions in Overwatch are purely for cosmetic items and do not give you any benefits in game (other than looking/sounding cool), so it's a fair system. You can also earn everything for free, if you have the patience of a Zen Buddhist Monk, otherwise you're going to pony up some cash. It's a system designed for gambling, addiction, and frustration.

Anyway, gameplay wise it's a lot of fun. The characters are all very unique and interesting. They all play differently and give you a variety of ways to contribute to your team. If you're not the world's greatest aim, that's all right, you can play a support and focus more on helping your teammates versus trying to kill everyone yourself. The game is very "casual" friendly in that it doesn't focus on kill/death ratio, it has fun things like play of the game and allows people to vote/commend other players who did well. It's a bit short on maps and modes, there's only three modes and the assault/defense and team deathmatch just don't feel all that different from each other.

Overall, I don't think it's worth $60, more like $30 or better yet since it has microtransactions should have been F2P. Personally for me it gets old, pvp is something I enjoy but only in doses and eventually it gets frustrating and of course you're inevitably going to run into something that is annoying. Whether that be people running a troll team (all McCrees) or just someone who is loads better than you and dominating you. In those times I like to have a story mode to retreat to and OW lacks that. If you are big into pvp and/or just really loved Team Fortress 2, go for it. Personally, there are other "hero shooters" I prefer to Overwatch.

Graphically speaking great to look at, frame rate is good too. Plenty of characters to choose from, very diverse from one another. It does not have a campaign feature and the introductory modes are not that many. I have invested some hours into it; not a lot to do to be honest. No reason to play after a while apart from stylistic character changes. Not bad but not good either. Average atGraphically speaking great to look at, frame rate is good too. Highly polished and fun, but its not worth the money. After about 10 hours, you've seen everything intresting and you just want a refund. I would recommend Overwatch to anyone with lots of money and spare time, otherwise you're better off playing TF2 or PVZGW.

Call me biased, but I don't even have to play this title to tell you I won't be purchasing it. No split-screen co-op? No thank you. Gone are the days of family entertainment.

Okay, so I have never reviewed a game on metacritic, but I have some bones to pick with a few of the negative reviews. While some qualms are understandable, such as a need for competitive mode or the fact that leveling only earns you skins, most of them are wrongly applied to this game, giving it an unfair score. As a Splatoon fan and a newcomer to online arenas, here are my thoughts.Okay, so I have never reviewed a game on metacritic, but I have some bones to pick with a few of the negative reviews. While some qualms are understandable, such as a need for competitive mode or the fact that leveling only earns you skins, most of them are wrongly applied to this game, giving it an unfair score. As a Splatoon fan and a newcomer to online arenas, here are my thoughts.

    1. The game is incomplete but full-priced. So was Spatoon upon release, which was also full-priced, but the dlc is all free. In months, it will have so much more. I think that it's reasonable to release Overwatch with just a few free-form multiplayer modes. Get the feel for the game now, why go into competitive when you just started playing anyway? Not everyone played beta. It's only been out for a month or so, it's to be expected that a game is lacking in content when we live in an age where patches and updates are a click away. And free.

    2. There is no campaign.... But not every game needs a campaign. While Splatoon's campaign served essentially as training, being boring and easy, I don't think that Overwatch needs one, nor would a campaign even seem useful in any way. There are training and pve modes that supersede what the campaign would be for, so what's the deal? This game is meant for online play, just like Splatoon. It could use more modes, but remember, it JUST came out. Games these days are never released complete. They improve over time and the developers do it on purpose to not only acquaint people with the vanilla first, but to keep things fresh while they add to it. If, let's say, Lucio wasn't vanilla and was a dlc character, you'd better believe that I would be more excited about him. That's the point of what they're doing. Some may argue that it's a cop-out, withholding what should've been in the main game to begin with, but if it's free, that's literally just whining.

    3. Somebody thinks the game is imbalanced? This one I don't understand. You can change characters essentially at will, specifically to counter other characters. Anybody who says that this game is imbalanced is just a rage quitter and hasn't learned which characters counter which. I'm a girl who plays Nintendo games normally like Animal Crossing, so if I can be good at Overwatch, anyone can be. In fact, I think that the balancing is one of this game's greatest highlights.

So, if you haven't guessed, Splatoon is my favorite game. If Splatoon is a 10/10, Overwatch would be an 8/10. My only qualms would be the way the overtime system works (make it like Splatoon, duh) and that mean-spirited, insanely harsh and unreasonable 75% exp penalty they give you if you so much as see what medals you've earned. They don't give you enough time to leave the match without claiming you 'disconnected', and the idle time is also extremely harsh. Once these things are fixed, this game will be a 10/10. I give Overwatch a 9/10 because it's one of the few games on the market that I find fun (at all, that deserves credit), it's very imaginative and fresh, and although it's no Splatoon or Ocarina of Time, I think that its deserving of its hype, not just a fanboy circle-jerk. Take that from a person who doesn't like WOW.

The other thing I like is you don't feel robbed when you die, and the only REAL penalty to dying is having to find your way back to the OBJECTIVE, you don't lose much else.

Its basically play the tutorial and then jump into the action…
There are 21 unique feeling characters all separated into 4 different classes, offense, defense, tank and support.. so you can contribute to your team in any way you please whether that’s getting kills, being a shield, or healing
Some classes do have more character variety than the other.. but every last character has its own weapon and special abilities with cool downs, so youre guaranteed to find one to match your playstyle, and hopefully youll find at least 1 in each class for whatever each situation calls for, as you can switch characters during the match much like a gun loadout in other competitive multiplayer shooters
so if youre not feeling one, go down the list until you find your right fit..
All of this is great,, every character feels useful in their own way..
The only problem is theres not much here
There are 12 maps here which is a decent amount of variety, but none stood out to me…
I can easily name maps in other shooters that are fun to just run around and kill people in..
But I couldn’t here.. they all really feel the same…
And evry mission is just objective based…
    You have capture.. escort…and control…
Basically youre either fighting or defending a section of the map at all times…
I understand that these are really the only kind of missions that make sense in a game thats about character variety…
But I’d like to see some innovation beyond just the characters…
Maybe coming up with modes for each individual classes, such as a team death match for offense and tanks only
a tower defense for the defense and support team…
    get creative
Not just the same modes in every other shooter set inside pretty average maps…
After you’ve put your hours into the game youll level up which unlocks a loot box…
And inside of these loot boxes are garbage taunts, costumes, and sprays…
You grind to looks different while you do the same thing for hours on end.
Which honestly I wouldn’t mind all too much if there was more gameplay variety
I can only capture and defend for so long
Negatives aside, Overwatch is a decently fun multiplayer shooter that I feel fans of this genre will enjoy
    I give overwatch an 8.0/10

Overwatch has a lot going for it. Being a team-based game, a lot of the enjoyment of an individual match will come from your teammates and how well you work together, but there is still a lot of individual skill required. Some characters seem OP, but the more you get to playing them, the more you recognize that the player controlling them matters a lot more than the character. The other major thing this game does is let you change your character during the match, this allows for countering and altering strategies as the match progresses.
Overall, the only things making this game less than perfect are the few game modes and lack of meaningful progression. But the core game play is incredibly fun and the variety of the characters make this a great game.

Remember Evolve?! This game is about the same. Cool concept of a hardcore team focused game (MLG) but if you lack a decent team it's just frustrating. Not bad but just not fun. If they do patch/fix the matchmaking then maybe.

Yet Overwatch is so much deeper and well-polished. The backstory is interesting, the cast is an unparalleled multi-cultural mix of instantly lovable personalities, the visual design is sublime, and the online functionality is flawlessly fluid. I love the concept of leveling for cosmetic loot, incentives for backfilling quick matches is genius in that it keeps you engaged and progressing regardless of your team's skill or success, and the contextual awareness between the characters you control means you don't even have to talk with strangers if you'd prefer to keep the mic off. Firstly, this game isn't good because of its flashy visuals or whatever people care about these days. Over also isn't a Team Fortress 2 clone as some would lead you to believe. Overwatch is something, different yet familiar. It combines the fast-paced style of a multiplayer FPS with a very team and character based aspect. There is a strong emphasis in the game of making the ultimate team to counter the enemy. Making a whole team of the most powerful character won't win you the game, making a balanced team the counters the opposition well will win. The other thing about this game is the diverse roster of characters to choose from. The lovable ape Winston and the tough woman Zarya are both classified as tanks but they couldn't play more different. With 21 characters in the game, each with their own backstory and special abilities, there is more than enough choice to build your squad.
One more point. This game is NOT a mindless copy of Battleborn OR TF2. Both play very differently to Overwatch and honestly, Overwatch is a lot better then those games.
Don't be afraid of the micro transactions in this game. There are absolutely no items in the game whatsoever that can give you a feasible in game benefit, no matter how much money to pump into this thing. The micro transactions are for loot boxes, containing cosmetic items. You get one loot box per level up, so buying these isn't the only way to get that Spirit of: 76 skin you want. The reason these micro transactions exist is because, to quote TotalBiscuit, so that people with more money then time don't get locked out of any content. If you don't have time to grind you can still get the normal level-up loot. In a game such as Call of Duty people that play more have more guns, and an advantage over people like me that don't play much. Overwatch's micro transactions are there so people aren't locked out of any content, even if it doesn't help in the game.
Verdict: Don't listen to the negative reviews, they don't know what they're talking about. This game is a fun experience with solid gameplay, stunning visuals and a great play style with diverse characters and team-building.

I'd like to preface this with two facts; I'm not normally a fan of competitive shooters, and I picked up Overwatch with the expectation that it would hold my attention all of one weekend. I've never been so happy to be wrong.

Overwatch is not a twitch shooter like Call of Duty, nor is it a grind-worthy DOTA clone like Battleborn. Instead it takes the best of both worlds to make an amazing team based shooter with enough content to remain fresh for months. Each of the 21 characters has been carefully crafted to offer a unique but balanced style of play, and with a dozen objective based maps there is an infinite number of team builds and strategies to play with.
Many negative reviews I've seen complain that there is no story or that the gameplay is simple and repetitive, but this is simply not true. Overwatch is chalked full of story, but nearly all of it is lore. Nearly 80 hours in I'm still catching new voice lines and interactions that expand upon the characters and their relationships to one another. These kinds of small nuances are also part of what keeps the gameplay so fresh. Being killed when the enemy deflects your sniper round or is sometimes even more fun than making the shot because you know you just witnessed either a miracle or a monster. Even the smallest details can make a difference; not only can D.Va combine her self-destruct and rocket booster abilities to make a devastating missile she is also able to activate it during the fraction of a second it takes her to eject after reaching 0 health, which can create some unexpected openings.
At it's heart Overwatch feels more like Smash Brothers than anything else. Tons of unique and fun characters with simple and addictive gameplay governed by an incredibly intricate and well thought out engine. Even if squad based shooters isn't your thing give it a chance, you might just fall in love.

Only game I'm ashamed to have paid full price for. Bad maps, bad gameplay, bad balance, bad almost everything outside of pretty colors. What a waste of money and time. You got me Blizzard...good for you, won't happen again.

That the game hangs together visually is remarkable; that it should cohere so well in design terms, unfathomable. [Aug 2016, p.104]

Blizzard's addictive and tactical team-based shooter is essential - the character-switching mechanic sweetens the genre. Group up with friends to avoid clueless carnage and enjoy the true game. [Aug 2016, p.82]
