All multiplayer games started feeling like complete rip offs for the amount of monetization of literally every element of the game (literally every customization is being monetized by live service and multiplayer gaming companies), so I decided to go back into single player games for a bit, to take a break from all the drama and nonsense. I decided to comeback to No Man’s Sky years after giving up on the game around launch. What a journey this game went through. From being complete garbage at launch, to a great experience now. The sheer amount of content that was added to the game completely free of charge is mindboggling to me. They added great base building mechanics, a compelling story line, managing your own fleet of freighters, customizing and building inside your freighters, derelict freighters to explore, community zones, etc. I can honestly say this game has much creative depth to it as a game like Minecraft. I love the turnaround this game has, and it really is a testament to how a good game and live service is meant to function. Hats off to you Hello Games, you did not succumb to corporate greed and irresponsibility. Expand

There's a story, but it's pretty subpar to be honest and there isn't a whole lot special about the graphics. I wish there was a bit more diversity in the planets, as there's really only a few different biomes and any two planets of the same biome pretty much look identical. Still, there's lots of fun to be had and I would recommend this game to anyone looking for a space exploration type game. Expand

Maybe I wasn't paying attention, but somehow you had to figure everything out yourself, which is cool in itself, but if you die several times at the beginning of the game because you're poisoned, burned or freeze to death, it's not that great, so I can understand why many stop right at the beginning of the game but if you master most of the beginning the rest of the game is all the better, really stunning planets and a feeling that is indescribable. If you only have minimal interest in NMS and like films like Star Wars or Interstellar, you should really try it out and preferably with a few friends. Expand

No Man's Sky is all about exploring and with the fact that you can own your own ship makes this feature a lot easier to use you can also upgrade / buy new ships with a range of classes. Multiplayer is very fun as you and your friends could go and infiltrate an enemy's base or build up your empire. Also with a range of different people at space stations including, Cartographers, Weapons managers, scrap dealers and more. The fact that you can go anywhere is very cool as it makes you want to explore which is what makes it a great open world game and also every single planet is unique. You could have an arctic wasteland planet or a boiling Badlands planet. Another cool part of the game is the fact that you can customise your race or clothes. Now, fast forward nearly 6 years and this game is absolutely all THRILLER and ZERO FILLER. Sean Murray and the amazing team at Hello Games have accomplished what feels like, the impossible. Welcome to the Interstellar Sandbox! With 18 *FREE* major content updates, the latest being incredible all by its wee self, this game delivers. And delivers and delivers. In fact, it has changed and improved so much since it's release, that any reviews written before 2019 are totally and completely misrepresenting what this game is today. When I first bought it, I played for roughly 5 hours and after one massively disappointing experience, I put the game away, for what I thought would be forever. However, mid 2021 I started reading that NMS had changed drastically. Without reading further in to it, I decided to give it another look.
That look turned into approximately 500 hours of playtime and platinum trophies on both PS4 and PS5. I couldn't believe how much content had been packed in this game. So much so, that there were times I'd just zone out while playing, trying to comprehend how this game was capable of doing what it was doing, and how it was possible. (Didn't figure much out, but that's okay because I don't work there) Audio - 40/42
Video - 42/42 (Next generation is gorgeous) Controls:
    Ship - 42/42
    Rover - 20/42
    On foot - 38/42 Terraforming - 36/42
    Exploration - 42/42
    Travel and Accommodations- 42/42
Base Building - A million. (Thanks to an orbital construction camera for easier piece placement and a large selection of parts to build with) Questing - Repetitive in a lot of aspects, but it's almost a secondary function of the game after a point. For what this game is and then became and for how much I got out of this game, I'm rating it at %100. Take that with a grain of salt if you like, but if you like space exploration and sandboxing, you're gonna freaking love this game. Cheers!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In 2016, I, like many, pre-ordered and played No Man's Sky at launch and we were all let down by what we had, but in 2022 with all these free updates (I think that should be known since most of the AAA games and these cherished companies don't even do that), this might be the greatest gaming comeback in history. Bare with me but this is only a fraction of what you can do with these updates.
    You can:

Own alien pets, play with your friends online, customize your character, be the leader of your own settlement and make tough decisions, defend that settlement from sentinels and space pirates who want to take your resources, build your own bases anywhere, drive vehicles on land and submarines underwater, go into scary abandoned freighters and fight hostile aliens, own your own freighter and frigates, own multiple ships, guns, and multitools (aka guns and mining tools), discover multiple planet biomes, plant alien like plants that can earn you a lot of units (The main currency of the game), take part in missions, embark on some interesting text story missions, have your own AI squadron to journey with you and fight rebel space pirates, etc.

They have delivered and more with these updates to bring us what they initially promised us at launch and I say it is time to appreciate companies like them for their hard work and how they didn't give up and owned up to their mistakes. It shows that how you act when you make a mistake is way more important than the mistake itself, because people will remember that more.I give this a 9/10 for what No Man's Sky is NOW, not for what it was in 2016 and I think many should try to move on from those times after more than 5 years have gone by. Cheers to you Murray and Hello Games, and God Bless you for your redemption and hard work.

Update: Game is complete now. Worth the price, also its often is 50% off on Steam. Very fun as a solo player, I never got into multiplayer but its there. Very fun and relaxing game, get lost in the universe.

This game has the potential to be a great game, closing in on a 10/10. But this game was released too early in development, it's missing features that were presented by the dev, it's completely missing the most advertised and expected gameplay features. Yet, the game was still released, at full price $60. This is half of a game. It's an unfinished alpha preview. It should not be on store shelves for sale. It should be on Steam as an early preview for $15 or $20.

Now, I believe this game will get there, I believe updates will be released, features added, and this will evolve into the game I expected and was promised/advertised.

My review has to be on the game I have, not the game I want or look forward to. With that said this game gets a 5/10. It's average. Interesting and at times beautiful. Exploring new planets, building new technologies to visit more distant and varied star systems is exciting. But after a while the game becomes completely repetitive and lackluster. Without a solid story, without a worthy goal, without multiplayer, without any RPG game elements, there is really no motivation to continue playing once you've upgraded you stuff to the max.

My advice is to wait on buying this game, but keep your eye on it. When the features are added it needs to be a great game then buy it. For now, hold off.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No Man’s Sky has been one of my favourite games to play on the ps4 since it’s release on August 9th, 2016. However like many others I was disappointed with how the game was first released as the gameplay wasn’t quite as advertised, but in my opinion it didn’t make it a bad game as No Man’s Sky still had plenty of new and innovative aspects of gameplay mechanics which made it the unique game it is. As-well the developers of the game showed they had their fans in mind when updating the game, as many of the updates massively overhauled the game visually, aswell as with gameplay mechanics by adding in multiplayer, and adding more story content(in which the storyline for the game is easy to follow and keeps the player immersed in the world that is No Man’s Sky). If you weren’t like me and gave the game a chance or were hesitant of buying the game from the reviews then I think you should give the game a chance in 2020 as since it’s release in 2016 it is almost like a brand new game. This is something different, and its not for everyone. For me, its one of the best experiences I had on my ps4. The planets are beautiful, and the felling of loneliness while you are exploring plus the amazing soundtrack, create an amazing mix of sensations.

If love space, and planetary exploration, you should ignore the critics and buy it, it is really amazing.

I've been playing this game since day one. At that point I probably would have given it about a seven, it was still pretty wonderful and didn't deserve all of the hate that it got. I had to correct my rating from 2 to 8. The developers have really put themselves into it and made a good game out of this catastrophe from the beginning.
Many futures that were missing at launch are now in the game and the needs of the players have been addressed. The game is now really a space exploration game with Survieval elements. Good jop hello Games.

But after years of the team not giving up we have No Man Sky 2019, which is not only a very different game to what was released in 2016, but its is one of the most original, technically impressive and even industry leading games , this generation. There is almost infinite things to do in this game , and its great fun, but the fact you can do it all in VR is what elevates this game to a 10/10. Just like RE7 its a great game on its own , but when you are able to feel like you are in the world and the sense of immersion and atmosphere is that realistic, it elevates the whole experience. the only negative I could give the game today is that it is a bit Blurry on PSVR, ive seen many other games look much sharper on PSVR which makes me wonder in they are taking advantage of the PS4 Pro hardware yet.. Its not entirely fair to mark a game down for the hardware limitations with such new tech, though, so for me the game sits at 10/10 in 2019. Expand

It was definitely hyped to the highest degree but If you watched closely and looked at all the content what was released was close to what I expected. Since release Hello Games have been constantly updating and working hard polishing, refining and improving No Mans Sky. There is so much content there that it really does keep giving.

If you want to explore the stars and see what is out there you may like me find this game enchanting. Initially there are some challenges, surviving on early harsh planets, constantly finding required materials but as you develop your suit, your ship and your understanding you will reap the benefit of not feeling desperately tied to a grind and can really enjoy seeing what you find. Setting yourself goals of making money, improving your suit, upgrading or replacing your ship, getting your own freighter, building your own fleet, finding weird and wonderful planets or systems then sertling within one on your own base either alone or with friends. There is a lot to do and enjoy here. If you are a player that needs a clean narrative to follow there are story missions to follow but these are quite light and not enough for me to recommend this game to you. If everything I have mentioned appeals to you, you like me may really enjoy this game. I’ve played around 170 hours across 2 saves ( one solo and one multiplayer so I wasn’t too far ahead of a new joining friend when multiplayer was released)

The biggest thing for me, causing me to rate this an 8 is that it is a truly unique game, unlike anything else I’ve played. And that for me is deserving of recognition.

It's unfortunate that this game falls flat on it's face from the get go. It has MASSIVE potential to be an amazing Space Faring Sim on PS4. The folk at Hello Games did a great job, but I feel the game is not finished, yet alone half finished.

The hype surrounding this game was it's downfall. Many items/features/options that were shown and stated did not appear in the final release of the game. I hope they are coming (and for free, good to deliver on what you promise). I plan to hold on for a little to see where this takes me.

So far, it's a game I play when I am tired of the violence of the other games I play. Something to chill with in the evening, keeping me busy exploring the systems I have already discovered. Not something you can play for hours and hours on end like most other games.

The foundation for an amazing game is laid, let's see if Hello Games decides to build on it, or leave it flat.

EA and Activision would've abandoned this game right from the outset after failing so hard, but Hello Games stuck with it and with the NEXT update, it's finally looking like the game that everyone was clamoring for. Aside from about 20 trucks worth of bugs and crashes that the developers are thankfully releasing patch after patch for constantly, the game is a good bit of fun with lots of stuff to do and explore, even if the planets and gameplay can get repetitive.

If you were waiting for No Man's Sky to get good to finally get it, now's the time to do it. It's only going to keep getting better as the bugs are worked out and the system becomes more streamlined, and Hello Games continues to keep adding more content completely free over the course of only weeks. If you already were burned, however, I can't really convince you to come back if you don't want to. I didn't buy into the hype to begin with because I'm one of about three people on the planet who has long-term memory and pattern recognition, so I knew from the announcement that the game was going to crash and burn just like 99% of the others do.

tl;dr, if you were waiting, get it now, but only when it's on sale, and if you were already burned, feel free to never touch it ever again unless you're generous and feel like giving them a second chance, because to their credit, they HAVE worked their asses off for the last two years to try to make up for Sean Murray's blatant lies.

It caught my attention though, after I learned that the developers were still updating it two years later. Maybe they were sincere in wanting it to reach their initial vision.

Now with the NEXT update it has, and the game is incredible, it took me entirely by surprise. If you still don't like it, it was never meant for you to begin with. It has an extremely large scope and a lot of variety. Every space game component you can think of is there and then some, trading, combat, farming, base building, fleet management, multiship freighters, customization, missions, alien diplomacy, endless worlds. Even a decent story. Just keep in mind that as a whole, the game is astonishing but it doesn't delve deeply in all of it's individual components, so don't buy it if say, only the combat is what interests you.

I'm addicted and just scratching the surface. I couldn't in good conscience have asked for more. It's not for everybody, but if you do love this kind of game, it might be the one you've always waited for.

It's not like Destiny where each planet has maybe 1 square mile of playable space. The planets are massive, filled with creatures, and full of wonder. I hope Hello Games can sell millions more copies to fund more development.

Update 2: It's been a little over two weeks since release and I'm an incredible 80 hours into No Man's Sky. I just can't stop. The NEXT version of NMS is pretty amazing for someone who has never played it before! The look of the game, the retro 1950's inspired art work, the sound, and the sheer scale make this a special experience. I am a casual gamer, not being interested in the deeper aspects of mining and gathering essential items, but I can see that here there is a lot to do here... If your'e like me go for the creative mode, which is a god mode allowing you to explore freely with no need to harvest raw materials etc.

Why 8? It is confusing at times, being unclear what your actual objectives are, and secondly the frame-rate at certain points drops so low that is for a few moments unplayable...

Definitely worth a shot if on discount.

I loved this game before the NEXT update. Now it's absolutely an incredible game. 300 hours total and I still come back for these updates.

Following two years of enhancements, the game is now unrecognisable to that released in 2016. Significant new content and well considered changes to the story and game play loops make this the game promised, and a must play experience for any fans of Sci fi, spare exploration, base building or survival.

The NEXT update just released and this makes the game something else. It's gorgeous. It's like No Man's Sky 2.

The tutorial is completely reworked and it introduces core mechanics earlier, like bases and freighters (I hear you get your first freighter free of charge, so that's neat).

They also reworked the enhancement systems for weapons and ship upgrades. It makes more sense now, at least for me.

Textures and procedural generation have been improved, along with new animations and a character model with full customization. You can play with other races, too!

It's a breathtaking game. All new features that comes after today is going to be a plus.

If you are looking for a PvP, combat game to play with teammates and enemies online, this is not the game for you. Even with the MP release, it is still not that experience.
If you came to look for a exploration, relaxing game, then this is you place. Now with NEXT update, it adds tons of new stuff that expand your gameplay in positive ways. Gotta love this

Beware of reviews from the old version of the game!!

The game on launch 2 years ago was rocky, to say the least. It a put of people of people off from trying the game since. Which is a shame, as the subsequent updates added a lot to the game, and refined much of the gameplay. Now the 'NEXT' update has landed, the biggest one yet, it overhauls a lot of gameplay that people weren't

One of the best games I've played!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No Man's Sky has very much redeemed it's self. with the beta tests of the update NEXT having amazing reviews and critics calling it the spiritual awakening or the Galactic Sized Come Back, the game is here to stay, gone with the bugs and here with the revolution of gaming.

The first update titled "The Foundation Update" brought a new game mode, base-building, the ability to grow plants and products, automation, etc

The second update called, "The Pathfinder update" gave us 4k graphics, 3 new land vehicles, an ARG, increased base building mechanics, more game modes and updated procedural software.

The third update was the 1st reviver getting people to come back, this was "Atlas Rises". With 30 hrs of great story, more procedural software updates, graphical updates, another game mode, (a somewhat bare bones) Multiplayer, more base building mechanics, ability to buy freighters and big ships, the ability to own 6 smaller ships at a time in your freighter, ship combat, and also flight combat and landing controls were also updated.

And finally the Big Daddy of all the updates and game saver of the century, "NEXT", while inconclusive and only going off well-known, hardcore, critic and beta tester accounts, the game seems to be saved completely from the trash can. Next has been confirmed to have, Ringed planets, more story, third-person view, multiplayer models, buy-able corvettes and frigates, COMPLETELY amazing and OVERHAULED graphics, factions, PVP, Playable races, amazing add-ons to base-building, gravitational physics, Overhauled procedural codes, Racetrack building and the ability to share them, updated resources, ability to command a fleet of ships and a restraint on universal currency so it doesn't become inflatable as easily. And i haven't even got into the stuff speculated by the new trailer.

This game is here to stay. Sean Murray never gave us promises and we struggle to grasp that. i myself gave a review of 4 before, ripping the game apart, but now the game we WANTED(and not promised) is finally here. we should all be happy it is and hope for it's continued progress to be as successful as the past updates.

Final Comparison: EVE/Elite Dangerous/Minecraft, i struggled to compare this game to anything but EVE and Elite Dangerous with more exploration and the infinite possibilities of Minecraft.

So. I was very excited when this game was first announced. Bought it at midnight of the release. How horribly disappointed I was cannot be put into words. No Man's Sky is quite possibly the biggest comeback in the history of gaming. After a truly disastrous launch, it looked as though this game would be doomed to go down as the most disappointing video game ever, a legendary failure. After a truly disastrous launch, it looked as though this game would be doomed to go down as the most disappointing video game ever, a legendary failure. But amazingly, within two years of its initial release No Man's Sky has been vastly improved in every single way. With stronger graphics, dozens upon dozens of bug fixes and tweaks, more activities to complete, a greater sense of adventure, a far deeper narrative, and oodles more secrets to discover, No Man's Sky is no longer that buggy, empty, pointless trek to nowhere that it used to be. The game oozes personality now, and everything you do - whether it's building a base, crossing water on the exocraft hover car, completing missions for factions, searching crashed freighters for goods, etc. there's rarely a sense of boredom. The planets used to be ugly multicoloured mudballs but are now captivating and feel so much bigger and more exciting, and so does the galaxy, which feels ten times as enormous as it used to feel. No Man's Sky has a very bright future ahead and I honestly thank Hello Games for not giving up on it and over time giving players what they originally paid for and much, much more. Expand

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
