Story wise everything kind of makes sense in this universe when the revelation bombs hit. Though the story and/or the copy/paste side missions is not what drives my interest in this game.

The Developers give you a lot of cool fun unlock-able stuff to mess about with on land, in underwater and in space. The main personal carrot on the stick is all the researching and chasing after new tech or rare/exotic gear/equipment. All to the backdrop of looking at colorful vibrant worlds while listening to the great in game soundtrack. The game does offer other things like mining, base building, trading, bounty hunting, fleet management, farming, pets and cataloguing.

The game is far from complex or deep. Pretty easy to pick up and put down on normal difficulty and not much of challenge. It does have survival mode which is not even that hard ( perma-death as of yet to be tried ). This a pretty chill laid back gaming experience for sure. Took my mind of the Pandemic BS for sure.

2021 Updates have tanked the frame rates. PC and Console gamer hey developers no excuse not to put graphical and effects slider bars/toggles in the console versions. Which consoles games tend to run worse anyway, because they don't have beefier or upgradable tech. WTF is this 20-25 FPS crap?

Game comes with in built VR. The pixelation is alll pretty bad and the planets in space didn't look very VR. The VR cockpit was pretty cool, but not as amazing as Infinite War cockpit. After trying several different VR games the motion sickness has finally gone. Still with all that plastic and rubber on the head? Head overheat happens pretty quicky. Yeah even when using a massive floor fan to try and counter it. Maybe I need to use PS/VR in the winter or something?

The various game mechanics are average at best and there are numerous time wasting gameplay (refining, piloting, excavating). I get the intent of giving a sens of grandeur to the entire world, but once you choose a destination and just travel for minutes, there kind of isn't any point to making it that long.

Anyway, even though the intent of the game is nice, I wouldn't recommend it, the implementation end up providing a somewhat dull experience.

When you finally find and fix your ship, you think, “Okay, that was annoying but it should get better now.” Oh, you sweet naive fool. No, no it does not.
I made the mistake of pissing of a little sentinel. Jump in my ship and try to run. Nope, sending fighters after me, and you can’t outrun them. Got one, almost a second but the third took me out. That’s actually fine. No problem there. The problem is when they spawn you and you get in to your ship and try to get to the objective… even if you are holding down boost until your finger starts to hurt, the time to destination actually slows down and starts going up. That’s right, your grave and the objective point are both moving away from you. On the planet…. As you are going top speed towards them. Needless to say I never got there. Like an idiot I held on for 8 minutes with the timer not going down and never getting to the place I died. Immediately shut the game down and uninstalled. I know I’m late to the game in playing and reviewing this thing, but in the off chance you are thinking about buying this thing? And you happen upon my review? Please, spare yourself the aggravation and irritation this game give you…. And go get a root canal. That’ll be way more enjoyable.

This game does not have an option to inver X-axis camera control, which means I can't properly control the camera, aim etc, thus this game is virtually unplayable. I've heard that Hello Games put a lot of effort in turning NMS into a proper game after disastrous launch, but it seems they decided to tell people who prefer a certain controll scheme to screw themselves.

also fun fact this game is the reason why Sony hasn't had any early access games for years and Sean Murray tried to weasel and say that Sony was responsible for not giving him enough funding. VP of Sony of America denied this and called it false.

And sadly I am still dissapointet. You can clearly see it got a lot better but for me the whole idea still doesn't work. Unlimited planets to explore sounds amazing in theorie but in reality this is only a game for people who really love the survival-colleting recources-upgrade&build things aspect. There is no exciting gameplay nothing happens on these planets. If you explore your landing zone you literally saw the whole planet there are no mysterious caves, forrests or other things you can explore. The animals and plants still look very repetitive. There is nothing happening on these planets only thing you can do is collecting recources thats the only purpose of them. I think this is very dissapointing because what's the point of a whole universe to explore when everything is so boring it isn't worth exploring. Like I said for me the idea sounds great and they did their best but in reality it doesn't work. It would be a much nicer game if there are only 100 planets to explore but every planet has the magic of a world like the worlds in Gof of War do. Sorry if my review is wrong and there are beautiful and exciting planets out there, but I never saw one sadly. Expand

The designers could have crafted 5-15 beautiful and interesting planets with varied biomes. But instead we've got an infinite number of randomly generated planets, most of which inevitably wind up boring and empty.

So prepare to spend hours and hours and hours searching for a pleasant planet for your home base, only to find that once you've found one and started started building, you're in a constant struggle with your inventory size, the game's confusing mechanics, and refueling everything you own or use. Can't find a particular material on your planet? You'll have to fly off of yours, but oh wait no launch fuel. Oh wait no hyperdrive fuel. Oh wait can't find a planet with the material. Oh wait your mining beam is out of fuel. Oh wait you're out of storage space. It all feels much more tedious than in other survival games.

And once you've built your base, a couple cool vehicles, you realize - there's nothing of interest to actually be explored and there isn't much story to speak of. There are barely any threats to your health and safety, and the variations among different kinds of flora and fauna basically amount to: wow, a vaguely cow-shaped thing with longer legs than the last cow thing.

That's my 10-hr story with No Man's Sky. I tried. I really did. And I wanted to like it. Some people do find this infinite randomly generated space exploration thing interesting. But for everyone else, go play Subnautica, The Forest, Conan, Ark or The Outer Worlds, Mass Effect, Astroneer - really any other survival or space game instead.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While I appreciate that they have vastly improved the game over the last 3 years, it is only now approaching what was promised at launch. The game's base concepts are just not good enough to hold my attention or make me feel like I would rather be playing this than something else, which is a shame. The worst part of all of this is that they feel that they are still sensible in charging $59.99 for this, which is absolutely obscene.

My advice is that if you want some good fun with randomly generated stuff (including space) then go pick up Spore for a third of the price (or cheaper if you can find it on sale). Also, I have about 35-40 hours but I originally bought the game when it launched from the GOG store.

Let me be clear that I just bought this game, and knew about the original false advertisement debacle, but decided to give it a shot anyway based on YouTube vids saying it is now worth a shot, it is not.

The game is an absolute rotting corpse of glitches. It's been 3 years, and you can play games made on steam in early access with 1/50th the money that look better and have none of the game breaking bugs. Some of my own include: the entire farming system is broken (plant growth timers reset to full every 5 seconds, making farming, a major aspect of the game undoable), constant falling through the map, instant death upon exiting craft (>10 occurrences), enemies attacking through walls, animal enemies biting/killing you from the other side of the map, random total loss of inventory items, map markers that lead nowhere, quest starts which don't trigger, crashing and constant ugly visual issue such as planet corona shining through starship walls. In a game built by massive pansies who didn't want it to be about killing/combat (guns and violence are yucky and mean!) and whos procedural generation leaves you with bland boring planets, the only option for fun is survival gameplay. These glitches make survival (where you loose items you spent hours on) and permadeath mode impossible. I have a brand new PS4, they have had 3 years to fix issues, its absolutely inexcusable.

As I said earlier, the "exploration" based gameplay is worthless. I have consistently encountered the same plants/features/animals in different color schemes on a vast number of worlds. Animals bumble around no further than 25M from the player before popping out of existence, and nothing about them appears lifelike. You'll never find them pooping, eating, mating, sleeping, fighting, NOTHING. For a game based on exploring the "wonders of the universe" and not combat, again, you would expect giving you something to look at instead of shoot at would be a priority, but, nope. Similarly, the resource gathering is the same on each planet, you'll find a different colored stone for metal, a different tree+bush for carbon, while every other element is sourced from identical plants which have somehow managed to colonize every planet in the galaxy.

Space once you reach it, exhibits the same lack of variety. Stations are universally featureless ball or block shapes, combat is stale and pointless. Planets have exterior appearances which don't match their surface (water from space on desert planets, etc). Fleets are bland and contain THE SAME 5 SHIPS IN DIFFERENT COLOR SCHEMES. Absolutely pathetic. Pilotable starships have about 20 base models with slight variations, but all fly/feel identical, the only difference being +/- 5 storage slots. Fleet battles show in the "is NMS now worth buying" vids are total BS, after 3 years they still don't exist, just minor fighter battles (>4 fighters at a time) with fleets shooting out canons in all directions for scenery, doing no damage.

Finally the grind is insane, and for no point. The story is a pathetic afterthought, and the lack of coming across more than 1 player means its not even worth it for swag/bragging rights. You're going to go through MMO tier levels of grind, with no story or social recognition payoff. If running around pointing your impotent little multi-tool at different colored version of the same tree/rock for hundreds of hours to build up a base maybe 5 people will ever see, more power to you and your autism, but its not my or any normal persons idea of fun.

Overall this game still holds the title of being the most colossal gaming failure of the 2010s. Edgy contrarians and paid youtube shills will have you believe otherwise, but the game is a lifeless, empty, buggy mess, devoid of meaning or fun. Still selling for 60$ is perhaps the biggest joke of all. If you gave this out for free, maybe 1/100 people would come even half way close to finishing it or giving it more than a few hours before downloading.

From the malfunctioning scanner to broken portals (the central focus of its ARG) and hydroponic trays, Atlas Rises (v1.3) was a colossal cock-up that ended with HG walking away from it leaving game-breaking bugs in their wake (crafting the highest value items without the ability to harvest gases because the atmosphere harvesters are broken results in the game working definitely not as intended).

Technical abilities and arsedness aside, the game is basically a deception. Claiming 18 quintillion 'unique' procedurally-generated planets is dishonest when the planets are all basically the same: avoid exposure to local environmental hazard by hiding in caves or sparse buildings (civilisations with no cities?), or activating exosuit upgrades. The environmental hazards all have exactly the same effect so the game's insistence on hot/cold/toxic/radioactive is quite insulting. The individual planets even have the exact same biome stretching from north pole, through equator to south pole.

In terms of player activities, the game's puzzles are frankly laughable and, between them and the extremely limited dialogue in the 'conversations' with aliens, it becomes stale and repetitive when played for any significant length of time. The added 'quest' in the Atlas Rises update is very short, simplistic and ultimately pointless. Most bizarrely, Hello Games have never addressed the problem of randomly falling through the floor (whether drawn or not) into a subterranean sea that is almost impossible to escape from, a bug that, from what I can gather, has been there since launch. Pretty pitiful.

    Pros: It looks pretty.
    Cons: It basically is one.

    UPDATE

Oh dear. I just spent a couple of hours on the new 'Next' update that they've had a full year to try to get right and it's appalling. Frame rate issues when the frame rate is locked, sky and water effects that look like it's 1999 again, game crashes, petty gameplay decisions that increase the complexity of the most basic tasks tenfold, brazenly designed to keep you stuck in preliminary gameplay because they still haven't worked out how to make an actual game out of it... this is all on a PS4 Pro, btw. Lots of games use procedural generation. You have to do more than that to make a game of it. Your procedural generation should also work, fyi.

    Score reduced to 2.

    And...

It's really bad. After 1.57 – seven patches into trying to make a buggy broken mess playable – it's still a buggy broken mess. Missions are broken so they're a waste of time. Base-building is garbage so that's a waste of time. Animals disappear into nothingness when you're trying to scan them so exploring and uploading is a waste of time. Atmosphere harvesters are proper broken so high-end crafting is a waste of time. All of these issues have reported via HG's Zendesk bug-reporting system and, obviously, ignored. Trying to work your way through all the broken and boring to the galaxy centre must be soul-destroying. Hello Games are truly the most incompetent, deceitful and lazy game developers operating at the moment and they bring shame to the British gaming industry. They're good at talking about video games, just not much good at making them.

    Now the abuse is warranted.

I spent ages trying to discover every plant and animal on my planet, and was excited to finally leave in search of exciting planets. However, that feeling of excitement quickly wore off for me. After a while you realise the games limitations in what is supposed to be an infinite universe. Planets would start to look the same, space stations lacked any variety, and interaction with npc's became very limited. On a side note, how am I the first person to discover a planet if there are already alien life forms scattered around said planet? Putting aside the lack of gameplay features that people were told would be in the game, No Man's Sky feels extremely bare bones. What is the point of having 18 quintillion planets in a game? Why create a game where 99% of it will never be discovered? The only reason I carried on playing this game was the hope of finding something new an exciting in the universe. Needless to say, I didn't. Maybe this game will improve with regular updates and added gameplay features. But considering how quiet Hello Games and Sean Murray have been since launch, I wouldn't be surprised if this game remains the way it is. Obviously, I don't want that to happen because this game had so much potential, if just failed to deliver and turned into a rather dull experience. Expand

One planet has blue grass with red dinosaurs and the other planet has red grass with blue dinosaurs its just a different colour palette for each planet. This game is too ambitious for its own good and it shows, it has a lot of things to show only to be implemented in a very shabby way (shooting mechanics, flight "simulation", survival). It's pretty obvious that this game has an identity crisis, so much to the point that it has no goal (or rather a badly explained goal), giving us no incentive to play it. The centre of the galaxy was shabbily done and was a colossal disappointment. You can't sympathise with indie developers just because they are "indie", you need quality and for 60 euros it's not even close. The game is terribly repetitive and not in the good way. Procedural generation is a risk because it gives the game no personality, there is nothing really interesting in the game, no variables (deserted planets, civilization, wars). The only good part of this game is the soundtrack. Expand

Exploration, discovery, adventure, and variation have always been the four aspects I deemed essential to an open-world experience, so while looking at No Man's Sky, a game which technically tries to deliver on all four of these aspects, I want to determine what differentiates this game from something like Breath of the Wild or Red Dead Redemption. Both of which I believe are the best of the best in all four of these areas. In terms of variety, I think where No Man's Sky fails is how it executes its variation with gameplay. The fact that it is procedurally generated means that this game will undeniably have easily distinguishable wildlife and environments, so in this area above all others, I thought the game would be able to execute it correctly. However all the variation is completely surface level. None of it changes the way you approach the game or traverse an area, and all it does is make some areas cumbersome to navigate. Now look at Breath of the Wild, the complete opposite of No Man's Sky in this perspective. Most of these shrines may look the same, but the variety in the micro-challenges and small puzzles they present you with work wonders to make them fresh and constantly surprising. The environments aren't just designed that way because that looks the best, their variation forces the player to make different preparations or use different gear and weapons depending on which they plan on venturing into. Traversing mountainous areas is completely different from traversing Hyrule Field because they're both laid out completely differently and require different techniques to move through them. This helped by the large selection of rewards one can hope to find. This directly ties to No Man's Sky's hours upon hours of exploration. Exploring is the very purpose of No Man's Sky, and is the core gameplay from which everything else stems. In this, No Man's Sky fails because, the only goal in the game is to mine for materials. Occasionally there will be a new creature or environment that may be visually interesting, however they all act essentially identically to every other creature and environment in the game. There is no purpose to simply exploring and looking for things of interest in No Man's Sky, because there will never be anything out of the ordinary to find. Nothing that offers anything more than a new sky-box to mine things in. Nothing ever feels new or surprising, so the discovery aspect completely fails as well. Red Dead Redemption, by contrast, differentiates every town and landmark due to the activities one is able to do there. No Man's Sky, however briefly, does understand this. The first hour of this game easily delivers one of the strongest feelings of exploration in any game as the player is able to go wherever they wish and do whatever they wish, until they realize that wherever they go, everything they do is a carbon copy of whatever it was they were doing before. The sheer fact that mining is the core gameplay mechanic in No Man's Sky simultaneously hinders the game's feeling of adventure, which requires a feeling of progression and journey. The easiest way for a game hoping to achieve this feeling is to demonstrate that the player is strong enough to take down foes that were deadly at the beginning of the game. With a goal in mind, a player can feel a sense of adventure by taking their own steps to accomplish that goal. The very purpose of Breath of the Wild is to deliver an adventure. The player can nearly constantly see Hyrule Castle, and thus are always reminded of their goal as they go about preparing for it in whatever way they deem necessary. In terms of what I value in an open-world game, No Man's Sky is an abject failure, and despite how amazing the initial half-an-hour to an hour was, I still cannot justify giving No Man's Sky any score higher than a 2 out of 10. I enjoyed playing this game for roughly two days, and only kept it installed for seven. This game is the epitome of untapped potential, and pure laziness. The game is nothing more than a flying/walking simulator with procedural generation.

The crafting is boring, the animal and plant life quickly got old and found myself not caring whatsoever about them. The enemies and combat are merely afterthoughts, it’s not refined at all. The tools and weaponry are jokes, nothing looks unique, feels good to use, or has any imagination. Don’t even get me started on the base building, just no. The devs were more concerned with you looking at the sky than they were with base building. You can name stuff that *supposedly* other people can find, but won’t. After I found myself in a downward spiral in not enjoying the game I just flew to other planets and named them, not once finding other players.

This game could’ve been awesome, game of the year even. REAL base building, unique and good weapons/tools, and the ability to fight/meet other people would make this game unreal. They could’ve taken inspiration from games like ARK and Destiny to amalgamate into a good game. I don’t feel scammed or ripped off, I’m just disappointed.

    Positives:
It’s a good looking game, the space portion and environment specifically. This excludes weapons/tools, etc. as I’ve stated previously.
Naming stuff. Cool feature, however I never was able to find others named planets (etc.)

    Negatives:
    Boring crafting
    Bland weapons and tools
    Enemies and combat are afterthoughts
    Complete joke of base building
    No multiplayer activity
    Little to no customization
Generally uninteresting. Does not hold onto one’s attention

In conclusion, before you ever consider buying it, go rent it for 5 days. If the game still has grasp of your interest by the end of the 5 days, maybe the game is for you.

Over hyped waste of money, there's nothing to do in the game and there's no ending, the game just resets itself when you get to the centre of the galaxy and it starts again in Galaxy +1.

Worst game I've ever played and I have been playing games for 30+ years.

Like many people I was excited for this one and for good reason. I mean unlimited worlds, unlimited loot and gear, fly across the galaxy exploring new creatures and locations. Whats not to love there? And then we got the game. What a massive colossal failure and the team just lied to our face. I can't say what hasn't been said already.

--Every planet feels the same, and there is nothing to do, rendering the selling point of 'endless planets' pretty useless
    --Pointless interactions with alien life
--Tedious resource collecting coupled with an infuriatingly tiny inventory
--Glitches from hell and back. I lost all progress because my space ship got stuck in an eternal glitch. Tried everything, nothing saved it. Tried a new game, another glitch. This one was glorious, the world just broke up into pieces around me. Constant game crashes etc.
--Developer outright lied about aspects, or was disingenuous. For that reason alone, I wouldn't support it.
--This is NOT an AAA title, yet it came out as the price of one. I'm not even sure it's a finished title of any grade.

If this company had any decency, they'd offer to give people their money back. The fact that they won't speaks volumes. This is the game that put the idea of pre-ordering in its grave.

I got mugged right off purchasing this smoke ball. Nothing to the game, extremely repetitive and no refund on it. I wouldn't be so salty if I only paid £5 for the indie game it is but charging £40 as if it's a AAA title is a joke. Doesn't live up to any of the promises. Don't buy unless it drops to £5 in a sale. Not worth any more money.

This one really is going to divide opinion. If you're one of the people over the last 12 months asking "but what do you actually **do** in No Man's Sky?", then this game is not for you. In fact, a lot of the stuff you're suggested to do in the game was really only added at a late stage, when the developers decided to try and market the game for a large audience.

In terms of gameplay, think Minecraft, but without actually building (just the mining and crafting part). The discovery and scanning parts (and the general aesthetic) feel to me rather like Metroid Prime. And the broad concept (i.e. exploring a massive and realistically scaled universe) is pure Elite. You will get out of this game precisely what you put into it... there's nothing helping you along. There are a couple of ways in which you could theoretically "finish" the game... to be honest, I'm not in the least bit interested in that. In fact, I will actively seek to avoid it. I'm quite happy pursuing my own quest to translate the local alien dialect of the area in which my game started out, and getting the necessary keys to unlock some of the locked areas.

It really helps if you understand (and I mean **really** understand) just what the developers have achieved too... this will help you overlook the fact that the graphics are quite basic, and draw distances (when flying close to planets at speed) are frequently compromised by a weird dithering effect.

Also, you have to be forgiving where the developers have compromised real physics in favour of playability. Docking/landing your ship is basically done for you; gravity is depicted as per Hollywood movies (i.e. not related to the mass of objects), some of the "things" from which you get "elements" are quite illogical and space itself is bizarrely blue & pink... never black. This is very much SciFi with the emphasis on "Fiction".

So... not realistic enough for anyone expecting Elite; way too open-ended for the majority of video game players. Who is this going to appeal to exactly? The answer is right here in the Metcritic reviews.

Elite Dangerous is hugely immersive, finely tuned, polished, and is a great game.

There are huge issues with intuitive controls and settings and you will still spend most of your time looking for resources. That is the vast majority of the game - looking for resources. Add to this the creatures you are supposed to be interested in exploring - the first few new ones I saw I was impressed by, it was unexpected and it felt new. After your tenth planet it feels very stale. The aliens are randomly generated and it shows - they don't look in anyway normal but like a collection of random parts of other animals stitched together (which is what they are to be fair). It is impossible for me to recommend this game which died for me after less than 10 hours gameplay - the new updates have not inspired a change in opinion because they cannot make up for what is the key flaw of the game - a lack of interesting things to actually do. It has a nivelty factor that keeps you engaged at first - but this fades, and when this fades so to does any sort of desire to play the game, Expand

The universe is huge but what makes it good? Thats it, its just "Big". Travelling through out the entire universe is boring and just going from one planet to another is just a chore and just feels like it takes too long. There is no story and no real goal for this game, so overall you just feel useless and underpowered. You start off trying to fix your ship but it gets overly boring from there. There is no multiplayer (Which was a huge selling point for the game). There was no caves to explore, no customizable FOV and best of all. The graphics looked like it was straight barf! In the gameplay trailers we were shown huge beautiful worlds. But in No Mans Sky we are just given an optimization pile of trash. There was no interest in the game and it wasn't difficult or have any difficulty in it at all. Atleast the game is playable ill give it that. And it did feature the main theme. But what good is the main theme if you cant do anything interesting. Overall I give No Mans Sky a 4/10. Do not buy this game. Maybe if it was free, maybe...

    Cons:
    No multiplayer.
    No mountains.
    No deep caves.
    No deep sea exploration.
    No forests.
    No customizable FOV.
    No challenge.
    No interesting NPC.
    No story.
    No ending

    Pros:
Atleast they tried (or did they..)

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
