And i loved it. It didn’t take me long to find out that Netherrealm (the developers of Injustice) was making a new fighting game called Mortal Kombat X. Now at this point i had only heard of the Mortal Kombat series and all it’s blood and gore. So i just assumed that it was gonna be another “okay” fighting game. I didn’t really think much about it from there on until the reviews came out. And they were damn good and it had a metascore of over 80. So yes i bought it on sale and when it loaded up i found out that it wasn’t just another “okay fighting game”. It was a masterpiece of a fighting game where every character has three different fighting style’s. Raiden for example can switch between Teleportation, Enhanced lightning attacks or setting up lightning traps, which is just what i was looking for in a fighting game.

It is a bit sad to see that the game offers things like “30 Easy Fatality’s” for five dollars when doing fatality’s isn’t even that hard. Only Ermac’s first fatality (which is of course on of the best one’s) requires you to know how to do it or you have to buy “Easy Fatality’s”, which is definitely not fair for newcomers to fighting games. If you didn’t preorder it you also have to PAY to play as Goro, one of Mortal Kombat’s most beloved characters which is pathetic.

The season pass character DLC though is pretty solid though. They offer four characters whereas two of them are old favorites and the other two are famous movie characters, Jason Vorhees and Predator which is absolutely genius.

Overall i give this a 9,5/10 (when not counting in the whole “Pay to win” thing).

Mortal Kombat X at first glance seemed very casual, easy and noobfriendly to me. The more time I spend in it though, the more I love it. This is definetly a game for the e-sports, and this is my favorite fighting game of all time.

Mortal Kombat X has some very solid and tight controls. It was so easy to just jump in and get into the fighting action. The moves seem a lot easier to pull off this time around. The biggest new feature is the variations system. Each character has 3 different variants, each adding different special moves and combos to their move set. For example Raiden had a variation where he can teleport, one where he has enhanced lighting powers, and one where he can set lighting traps. My only gripe with this new system, is that some characters have variations that only add one or two new moves to the equation. It's still very good though.

Of course, another good thing to look forward to is the fatalities. They are more gruesome than ever here, and may possibly be some of the best of the whole series. Some of them are pretty hard to pull off though. (I'm not going to get into all the micro transactions and abundance of DLC.) The krypt is where you can buy all the different fatalities and costumes. Instead of just a boring open field with tombstones, this is a first person puzzle segment. This can break up some monotony, and the krypt is rich with content. This has the most content of any fighting game, i can easily say.

I don't feel like getting into too much detail over the story, but i just want to say it was not as good as Injustice or MK9.

Mortal Kombat X was a very good fighting game, and i would go back to play ti anyday. 8/10

Oh wow, Mortal Kombat X is a treat, perhaps one of the best games of the fighting genre of this year so far.

Oh wow, Mortal Kombat X is a treat, perhaps one of the best games of the fighting genre of this year so far.

Mortal Kombat X’s story takes place 25 years after the events of Mortal Kombat 9 and introduces a new type of story not seen in the game before. It is a non-linear game, the main story taking place in the present, but with events given context through flashbacks to fill the gaps of what happened to each of the characters during those 25 years.

The new roster features eight brand spanking new characters, with a ‘main four’ who are all related to major players in the MK universe. You have Cassie Cage, daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, Jacqui Briggs, Jax’s daughter, Takeda’s the son of Kenshi but was raised and trained by Scorpion and finally, Kung Jin, who is the cousin of Kung Lao. Easily the most diverse group of protagonists in any game of the moment! There are other new faces too, such as the badass insect queen D’Vorah and old western style sharpshooter Erron Black.

The new Variation fighting styles that come with each character is definitely an interesting little feature. I can see these styles being better utilised by more competitive players rather than more casual players such as myself, but I can already see the benefit in the styles and how it can really tailor your experience as a player. Do you like fighting at close range? Then you’ll want to look at Cassie Cage’s Brawler or Jacqui’s High Tech variation. More of a ranged player? Try out Takeda’s Lasher or Raiden’s Thunder God variation. What’s neat about each of these is that a small part of the costume changes to signify the variation you’re fighting with or against. For example, Quan Chi’s Summoner has glowing red eyes and shoulder pauldrons and Kotal Khan’s eyes and tattoos glow orange in his Sun God variation. It’s a fun thing to try out, and each variation still keeps the base move set of the character, just with new special moves to buff them up. There are also more defensive variations out there, not all just about punching, shooting or stabbing such as Ermac’s Master of Souls variation which allows him to temporarily avoid damage.

Story wise, the plot is pretty solid. It’s not mind blowing, but it’s not unsatisfying either. It clearly stands on its own two feet and with the flashbacks involved there is certainly more depth added in terms of character fluff to establish changing relationships between characters. There are some wonderful moments in the story, including old rivals coming together under a common cause and also darker moments that see old friends turn on one another. What’s great about the plot of this game, and I think this applies across NetherRealm’s last game as well, that you have a rich, lore heavy story that at the same time doesn’t actually leave you feeling lost at all. They lay it out for you in a way that makes it easy, but not just spouting out facts about the Earthrealm, Netherrealm and Outworld and their intertwining politics. For the tenth game in the series, that’s quite the challenge, but they’ve nailed it down pretty well. You won’t get any sharp plot twists or unexpected events, it’s all pretty linear but that’s absolutely fine in my opinion. It’s a game about beating the **** out of people at the end of the day, not everyone is going to be picking this game up for the plot, but it’s there if you want it.

The voice acting really varies in this game, really varies. You have some superb voice talent amongst the newcomers, D’Vorah particularly stands out for me with her unique accent and resonance to her voice. Whereas characters like Raiden and Kung Lao fall a little short. I’m not sure if it’s the voice actors fault, or the writer’s fault on that one however. You can only do so much with what you’re given to make it sound good, but some of the dialogue just feels to me like it’s come straight out of a bad martial arts movie dub at times and when you have some excellent voice acting alongside, it makes the experience a tiny bit jarring. Of course, you do have that element of cheese there as well in the classic archetypes that the old timers have, like what I like to refer to as Johnny Cage’s ‘Duff Man oooooh yeah’ (10 points if you read it in the voice) type attitude and for a game like Mortal Kombat it absolutely works, has worked in the past and will no doubt continue to keep working in the future as well.

The Living, Traditional and Online Towers are a brilliant way to burn a few hours and hone your skills. The innovative new Living Towers provide brand new and constantly cycling challenges that will constantly keep you on your toes. Not to mention the opportunity to find Secret Fights for secret achievements. You’ve also still got the Test Your Luck mode, which puts random modifiers on fights which always makes things interesting and of course the online fights as well. Online fights are something I personally steer clear of, simply because my skill level is so low compared to what I know will be waiting for me out in the big wide internet world that I’ll be torn to shreds in only a matter of seconds. I’d rather avoid that, really.

Old features return to the game that you would expect to be there, including the Krypt where you explore the dark, haunted graveyard in search of secrets and bonus features such as skins and concept artwork in exchange for Koins that you collect through playing the game and winning fights in all modes of the story. Obviously the more expensive the secret, the better it will generally be.

Over all however, the Mortal Kombat X experience is exactly what you would expect of a Mortal Kombat game. It’s face paced, fun and there’s no end to replayability as there will always be the chance to replay story mode and hit up the Towers. You’ve got plenty to play with and countless variations of characters to master. It’s a wholesome experience and definitely worth every penny

Fun game. I'd give it a 9 overall, but the fact that netherrealm is selling DLC they haven't released yet, let alone should be part of the game, then trying to basically give you an "In-app purchase" console game for $60 deserves a 1 because that's ripping off gamers. That carrot dangling ruins the game for me and brings that 9 down to a 1, so have a 3.

Isn't it better to have a brand new MK than a remastered one? The game is awesome, It has a lot of moves to learn with the 3 sides of each character. They improved the X Rays attacks, now every character has its own skull. The story it´s not strong but we didn't get this game by its story mode. Graphics are cool and fatalities are awesome. It is a must have.

I remember when MK1 first came out, in the Arcade it was something truly special. Kids would line up ready to pop in 25p to try and knock their opponent into the pit, or rip off a head or two. Finally the game was converted to home console and I got it on the legendary 'Mortal Monday'. I would spend hours with my brother smashing the hell out of each other in glorious 16 bit violence. MK2 came next and was just as awesome, then MK3 which was even more F'ing awesome!

Then..... Time passed by and I grew older and wiser, grew up. Had a family and stopped playing MK games. I played every other type of genre on PC through to N64, to Ps1 right up to modern consoles.

Then, MK X appeared. At first I paid little attention, but the hype started building. I watched interviews, and story videos and fatality videos. I was been drawn in. Finally on the day of release I went and bought the game. Went home and loaded it up.

And....... It is absolutely awesome!!!!!!! I feel like a kid again. Smashing the hell out of Kano's face, breaking Scorpion’s Back, Tearing the face off Raiden, Facing Goro all over again!!!!

The fighting is perfect, the graphics are amazing, the story line epic and there is so much to see and do!

Well my hopes were high on this one. I thought it was the first BIG beat em up for the PS4 platform but... Too wear graphically. This seems something out for PS3 and not for a new generation console. For example Johnny Cage looks awful (no expressions and looks like Duke Nokem). BUT not a bad game just a little disappointed. Terrble game, have been playing MK since arcade days and this is the worst. Story mode was turned off after 20 minutes seems its just like watching a film(and not a good one) that stops every few minutes to let you fight. Replacing older classic charcters with offsprings of others just seems lazy. Half a game and expected to pay for the other half poor game, wont be buying another one Expand

    The good:
    24 characters x 3 varations = lots of moves
    Gameplay and controls good (offline)
    Mostly good graphics

    The bad:
Pressing buttons really fast is not a test of skill (-1)
    Netcode (-2)
UX to do anything online is slow and often reports server errors (-1)
Graphics on some characters look unfinished (-1)
    Day 1 DLC (-2)

NRS manages to put the entire Cage family in the game instead of anyone interesting. Oh and microtransactions plague the game and are on every screen. After you do the fatalities your will be bored quickly. The color palate is so bland. Would it kill to aske for a little more color on the fighters to make them pop? Stripped down version of MK9 and even injustice. NRS could have done better. Expand

Mortal Kombat X is a very entertaining game. If you like fighting games it will keep you entertained for hours. There's a wide selection of characters and the game seems well balanced. It's irritating that a number of characters are additional charged DLC but tere's enough variety for them not to be missed. Overall a great game that's well worth buying.

The violence is way over the top, so it can't be and shouldn't be taken seriously. Otherwise it's a very solid game with demanding fights.

No longer eclipsed by mere technical competitors, this is brash, brilliant, and brimming with extras. [July 2015, p.68]
