The forts is in the single player game is extremely simple to take over. The only reason I would ever need to buy the micro transactions is if you want all your orcs to say legendary on their name tags but other than that no need I got my army to level 326 and took down the fort easily which was like level 150 and this was in a more difficult region. So everyone complaining about the Micro transactions are either very lazy they’re not very good games. I understand that micro transactions can be frustrating if it hinders you from playing the game the way it was intended to be pLayed but there is no reason to complain about this game about that. If micro transactions Hinder you then I agree that it is totally corrupt especially if you’re buying a new game but that is not true with this game! This game is honestly not difficult ! This is one of the most amazing games ever created especially if you’re a massive Tolkien fan! Easily at this moment the greatest rpg of the year. Expand

This is not a Pay-to-Win but depending on how you play may have that appearance. Once I unlocked the primary areas and could control an Army I started clearing out all the little collectible and side quests. While I did this it did seems like maybe there would be an intense grind in a few areas that seemed like I just wasn't strong enough. However, once I got back onto the primary quest line it leads me back into the area that I hadn't concerned that was more level appropriate and not grindy at all. If you are too aggressive and Kill the captains on the quests instead of recruiting you could easily turn it into a nasty grind. For those who only want to kill captains and not play the game as intended this could be seen as a Pay-to-Win, but you just need to use the Free in game currency to repopulate the dead captains. Even the Legendary Loot boxes are possible if you complete the Online Revenge quests to get the higher tier currency for FREE. You could also allow yourself to be killed to quickly repopulate if you find yourself low on currency, but I've not had this problem.

Because of my play style the games very enjoyable, and won't require any additional purchases past the original game purchase. Though I'll probably consider future DLC expansions.

My god...3.4 user score? 100+ people giving a 0 because of microtransactions? UGH. I wish metacritic could keep user reviews somewhat legit. I mean, one idiot wrote a whole paragraph talking about how great and addictibe the game is.....then said "but it has micro transactions so i give it a 0".

This game is fan tastic, addictive, and by far the best game in the Tolkein universe.

This game is fan tastic, addictive, and by far the best game in the Tolkein universe. Building armies is spectacular fun. Hunting orcs is wonderful. Even the "grind" aspect is fun.

If you don't like microtransactions transactions DONT BUY LOOT BOXES. They are unnecessary. They are for people who want to quickly breeze through the game without working for it.

People whining and wetting themselves over the loot feature havent even played the fantastic story mode. Buy this game and appreciate it for what it is, one of the most fun adventures (and best looking) around. Warning though! The AI, aka Nemesis System, is scary good.

For anyone with a genuine interest in this game it is worth noting straight away that you do NOT need to buy micro transactions in this game. For people who play the game how its supposed to be played (not powering through it and trying to complete in 15 hours) then your character and orc army will be more than capable to get through the final few acts.

Ok let me just say one thing here: If you don't want to have the end be so grindy and **** like people are **** about, then don't power through the game. And for **** sake, would you all just shut up about the **** microtransactions. I don't like them either, which is why I AM NOT BUYING ANY **** LOOTBOXES, Besides everything I have read about them says that if you actually invest timeOk let me just say one thing here: If you don't want to have the end be so grindy and **** like people are **** about, then don't power through the game. I don't like them either, which is why I AM NOT BUYING ANY **** LOOTBOXES, Besides everything I have read about them says that if you actually invest time into the game then the lootboxes are completely unnecessary.

Now that that is out of the way: I **** love this game already. I've defeated a **** ton of captains already and each and every one was unique and fun to fight against, required different tactics, and had different personalities.

The combat is pretty much the same as the first game, but that's a very good thing here. The first game had amazing combat and this is no different. Its very similar to games like Assassins Creed or Batman: Arkham Asylum. One thing I love that Monolith has added to the game is dismembering enemies. It happens at random but man does it look cool when it happens.

I like all the RPG elements that were added also. Captains, and warchiefs now drop loot that you can add to Talion to customize him as you see fit. They are also able to be broken down into Mirian, the games in game currency to buy things like gem slots for your gear.

I haven't made it out of the first area yet, but that's because it is just jam packed with things to do and also because i want to level up my character so he isn't underpowered later on in the game. One of such things is clearing out all of the captains from the army screen. I like to think of it as sowing chaos among the ranks of Orcs, because whats an army without its captains?

All in all, I am having a fantastic time with this game. I'll be giving an update later in the game though to see if my feelings changed.

This is really more of an 8/10 because of the unskippable orc intros (so annoying at times), some of the poor questlines (carnan in particular) and the fighting pits (occasionally very entertaining but often a massive pain... I hate it when my orc just stands around doing nothing until it dies)
However I can't agree with a 3.6 so i'm trying to upvote it. There's tons to love about this

However I can't agree with a 3.6 so i'm trying to upvote it. There's tons to love about this game. Huge areas to explore with lots of missions and sidequests. There's not that much narrative drive throughout but the gameplay is really fun and i like some of the twists and turns even if it did kind of crap all over the lore.
I've finished the first 4 stages of the shadow wars end game (there are ten stages in total) and it's surprisingly fun. it's just siege missions (either defence or attack) which can be repetitive but at the same time the sieges are one of the best parts of the game so i'm spacing this part out and taking my time with it.
All in all I can see why people are disappointed but this isn't andromeda, it's still a really good game which is a lot of fun. It's just also quite flawed in areas. I'd say pick it up on sale and give it a go. You'll probably enjoy it but don't buy loot boxes because they really aren't necessary. You can just recruit orcs during the siege missions of shadow wars, there's no need to buy them.

With the short amount of time I've been able to play Shadow of War I'm already blown away- Compared to the first game, the visuals are a masterpiece. The gameplay and animations feel so much more fluid than Shadow of Mordor. Don't get me wrong, SOM had incredible gameplay, but it always felt like it was lacking in variety, with only a couple different animations for each combo. SOW has outdone itself in terms of gameplay mechanics.
Also, when you think of games like Destiny (for comparison, no bias), the sequel was very good in its own right, but it wasn't that much of an improvement from the first game. Shadow of War, however, has absolutely smashed this sequel out of the park. The map is massive, with the in-menu world map being 3D rendered. New mechanics, combat moves, Uruk variation, enemy types and environment settings. It has a much more flushed out nemesis system, and RPG elements never before seen in SOM. The progression feels perfectly paced, with the story starting a little while after the events of SOM.
As for the story, I cannot say, as I have not played anywhere near enough of it. But just from the opening few missions, I can already say that it is going to be one to remember.
In terms of accuracy in the LOTR universe, the names of places, the placement and map generation, and even time- they're all perfectly flushed out and thought about carefully. As a massive LOTR fan, I am not disappointed by how they have portrayed the game.
In conclusion, this game has definitely been worth my money and time, and I cannot wait to play more of it. WB and Monolith have not failed to impress, as always.

To all those saying that this game is similar to a mobile app, educate yourself. There are games out there where you run out of "energy points" and have to wait 5 minutes+ to continue playing. Most of which are games that actually don't even have any substance. Its literally "pay and go to the next chapter, pay to get the weapon that does 5444 damage vs the sword you get in the game that does 77 damage." Those are extremes that "Shadow of War" doesn't go to. Mobile apps also rely heavily on what is referred to as a "whale". The 5% of the people who get the game for free who encompass more than half of the overall profit of. Nobody aims a gun to their head to make them pay.

If you owned a company and could make a profit doing this, you would all do it. If you have willpower to play the game and not even look at the micro-transactions (buy the stuff with in game currency or actually earn your loot) then it would be a pleasant experience. It is NOT grindy in my opinion because it is fun to use some strategy and kill/capture the harder orcs. Also, you do not need to pay to beat the game, you do not hit a steep wall that you cannot get past unless you pay, you can enjoy it regardless. You guys are so annoying, giving this game 0/10's when it is actually an extremely fun game with plenty of things to do.

I am willing to bet that most of you just trash the game, but then run straight to the store and buy it/enjoy it. You just want to complain for the sake of complaining. Play the game or don't review it.

Alright, most of the reviews complaining about microtransactions have simply not played the game, or at least are not good at the game. I played the first game, Shadow of Mordor through twice 100% in less than the time i've already spent on one playthrough of Shadow of War. (EDIT: I forgot to mention that i also played all of the DLC through in that time.) And frankly, i must say that Shadow of War is better, in every way that it can be. The graphics are nice, the game runs better, there's no longer these useless or annoying sidequests, but they are replaced with actual, interesting story content. The nemesis system is better in every way, and helping your followers feels good, (even though after you've conquered all of mordor you have little connection to your followers anymore.) The game is basically just better in every way. God i loved the Nazgul fights.
But never in those over 50 hours of gameplay did i experience an impassable paywall where i either have to grind for 50 hours or pay money to get through act4. I actually spent an hour per area, hunting for good captains, assigned warchiefs and upgraded my fortresses with the money i had gathered throughout the game, (and i spent about 50 000 miriam on lootboxes just to see what i'd get at lower levels)
Having upgraded all my forts to a the fullest extent i could, in less than 5 hours of gaming i started playing the sieges. Oh damn, i just won, and they didn't even breach a wall. Damn well i guess it will get harder. But it never did, i just dominated orcs during the sieges always getting the max level guys i could. You get a level per siege so keeping up with the enemy isn't a problem.
I only lost 2 sieges and those were because of my own error, and not because of the level of my fort or my followers.
Not once in my playthrough did i face a paywall or even notice the microtransactions.
I also saw someone complaining that their followers started dying all the time, well that's because you didn't go revive them or you just generally didn't look after them. Never was a problem for me.

All in all the game was totally worth the money i spent on it, i will buy the expansions to the game, because i absolutely loved the experience. All of you who are complaining about the microtransactions or the paywall or what have you, have not played the game or suck very deeply.

Do not read the negative reviews of users. They are devoid of arousal and are thrown against a play masterpiece only for unnecessary and completely optional microtransmissions! But do you realize that by doing so, you just do not mind a great single player game? This is a masterpiece game and a possible candidate at GOTY 2017. 10 full and praise.

This game is by far the best RPG game I have ever played in my entire life. The Witcher 3 come really close but in a different way. There is absolutely everything in this game that anybody may ever want. INSANE amount of variety in EVERYTHING!!! Nemesis system is improved tremendously after the first game! I played for about 20-30 hours before I started noticing SIMILAR (NOT THE SAME) NPCs huge depth of their characters makes you feel their uniqueness within the world, and even when I pass by regular orcs I just feel obliged to rid the world from this monsters because I feel I truly fight the dark powers and really make a difference by killing them! This is the first game ever that makes me feel that way about any regular monsters that are scattered throughout the world. The danger of any orc being able to slay you and earn the respect and promotion makes you feel cautious of your every move. The variety of the surrounding area is just stunning! every single location is the size of the whole map from the first game which is pretty impressive, considering the amount of action that is packed within. Scattered artifacts and hidden memories now MAKE SENSE! I feel the desire to find out what has happen to the world and once again I feel like I really can make the difference by submerging into the atmosphere of battle between light and dark. Skills are designed to make you think about the upgrades you should use approaching any significant battle be it an assault, ambush or anything else that leads to the weakening of the Saurons army. It will take me another review to discuss the battle system. Such a variety of moves that Talion and the orcs display just stuns me every single time I engage in mortal battle for survival. Slo-mo is absolutely incredible and is always more than appropriate! I have not experienced anything like it in any game (maybe Witcher 3is coming close to that but not quite). Animation of the characters (main and regular farming material) makes me feel like those scum is actually may be an individual with a personality. The promoted orcs are just fabulous. I can't stop admiring the quality of detail and depth of the characters. I am still amazed with the orcs chit chat right before the mo fos are about to go down. Within the battle there can be numerous moments when the tide can change and the fight balance can shift either way. Several times I was unexpectedly saved by soldiers popping out of nowhere giving me a chance to survive. Just as many times I was about to slay another green beef cake as suddenly I was tackled by some giant in an ambush attempt. The variety of approaches you can take is just mind boggling to me. Loot system is not excellent but is an improvement still. Now there is at least a reason for you to "farm" the orc, although coming back to a variety of the enemies, it does not feel completely like farming, since I feel every enemy is unique and worth my time slaying the bastard. And I think the last but not least, the graphics. Stunning. The level of detail is exceptional, colors are beautiful and the textures and attention to the world is awesome! Finally, microtransactions. If you are one of those people who complete the game on easy difficulty, keep buying the chests. For those who are broke and can't afford it - beat it. You don't have to buy it. It doesn't affect you if someone buys a loot box, so wtf would you complain about someone playing the game with a little help? it's their own story! I would understand if it was an MMO and you were busted by jerks who buy 100 boxes and farm you every time. Expand

Although it takes a while to get going, the nemesis system creates incredible personalized stories, the ads aren't making it up. The game is perfect in almost every way. The game does suffer from a lack of tutorials, and only being able to equip one bonus per power at a time. However, the game still has a lot to offer, and is one of the most fun games I've ever played. Now, to address the elephant in the room, the micro-transactions don't affect the game at all. I am 10-12 hours into the game, and I have not seen a single thing promoting loot boxes. They are not necessary to play the game, and only there for people who don't want to play the game. I would argue that the loot boxes are even more prevalent in Battlefield, Overwatch, and CS:GO, but no one complains about those. This game is amazing. Definitely worth the $60, and I expect to have even more fun as the game progresses. The problems are blown out of proportion by journalists. Play this game. You'll thank me. Expand

With that said, this is the best game that i've played on PS4. It's so polished, deep, and has a ton of replay value even after you beat it. The story mode of the game from what I remember (it's been a while since I beat it) was ok, but just doing the online fortress raids and continuing to strengthen my own armies is where I'm enjoying this game the most.

The depth of character and ability customization available in this game is impressive. So many different ways to build your character and minions, you can guarantee that your 'Bright-Lord' and his army are truly one of a kind. I played Shadow of Mordor and loved that game, and this one took the series to the next level entirely!

Shadow of War is a STEAL at the price it's going for these days, and I highly recommend it to anyone, especially fans of the Lord of the Rings movies/books.

This game is very addictive, it builds up from its great predecessor (Shadow of Mordor) and adds a lot of content and gimmicks along, its better than the first one and it's very enjoyable, it gets old the tribe-oriented theme, maybe it gets better with the dlcs, maybe not, it's worth the full price and more if you like (maybe not if you are hardcore fan) LOTR.

for a tokienhead, a non-canon dream come true.
and indeed not more noncanon-ish than the exalted Hobbitses films.

Freeroam, beautiful acrobatics, interesting combat and...orc. more orcs to command like ugly stinky Pokémon.
and loot microtransactions? all whining. Soon reduced to a child-friendly gambling minigame.

    enjoy it as I did.

Totally unfair reviews, which is why I had to write my own review. If reviews were left to gamers like these no one would ever want to play games. I agree I hate microtransactions too, Star wars Heroes is a perfect example. Besides this game is better than the original in every aspect, so when I say its a shame how many people turned a blind eye to this game based on the losers who gave this game zero. Pretty sad, to give a zero means it has too be absolutely atrocious and this is far from it...

Micro transactions aside, Shadow of war is an excellent gmae. It improves on almost every aspect of the first game and is more of what I loved the first time.
The nemsis system feels way more fleshed out. The Orcs have character and there is so much fun stuff to do.
The looting system can be tedious and bloated at times, but this doesnt take away from the over all experience. If you

You gotta love the fact that if their is one, just one little flaw with a game, then the User Score on MC has to be Unfavorable. My only flaw with the game is that the graphics feels a little......meh compared to other WB games like Batman: Arkham Knight, Injustice 2, and Shadow Of Mordor. Other than that, this game was a blast, great combat mechanics, fun story, and of course The Nemesis System.

Shadow of War is an exciting and engaging sequel to the masterpiece that was the original. It expands the world and improves on the nemesis system.

The upgrade level system is a little too much though. There is a lot going on and the menus can get a little confusing. Also the the gear is really awesome and it adds a little character to Talion. Now the whole thing about micro transactions. Don't buy them. All you get is orcs and that will beat the entire point of the game, so I understand the complains, but just do not buy them. If you liked the first go buy it. Expand

People on here are complete and utter idiots! This game is extremely fun and innovative and all people can talk about is Loot Boxes which in no way is necessary to play the game.Every zero I see lends me to believe most of these people have never even played the game. For once the Critics are correct and the people have absolutely no idea what hell they are talking about!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Middle-Earth: Shadow of War is not just the best Lord of the Rings game, it is one of the best games ever made. Easily GOTY 2017.
It takes what made previous game, Shadow of Mordor, so great and doubles everything, at minimum. It does everything better.

Story follows Talion (Troy Baker ) and Celebrimbor (Alistair Duncan), after the events of first game. They create new ring and aim to conquer all of Mordor. Same time, Dark Lord's forces gather all around them preparing for the final battle, that will decide the fate of whole of MIddle-Earth.

Story is very well written and has several absolutely fantastic twist on the way to end. There are several absolutely marvelous characters and atmosphere is just what it should be.

This is also pretty long game, but it is not too long or repetitive. Certain basic gameplay elements are there whole time. Nemesis system is the big deal and orcs come in so many diffrent shapes and skills. Combat does not get boring, it is very engaging, thanks to one of the best combat mechanics ever created. It is easy to learn but difficult to master.

There is also so many those little things that really make this game that good. There is so many lore in there to be found. Many artifacts have story of their own and many very famous characters also have so much more story in them.
I must say that the first time Witch-King of Angmar emerged from the shadows, was absolutely fantastic moment and boss battle is one of the best ever in so many ways. One thing I would change thou is the fact that his weapons are not that good. Sure, it is loyal to the source material, but I would have added a sword for him and made his weapon look more different from Saurons (like in the movie).

To point out few of the worst things in game, first that comes to mind is pit fights. Those are so bad and boring. To a certain point those are not even that difficult but champion level is brutal and that is the point when you are furious when you see how incompetent those orcs are. They do not do what they are suppose to do.
Also, micro transactions, cancer of gaming. It is there, but you do not have to use it. Sure, its makes the game easier but I managed very well without it.
Also, there is certain community points in game, but I really do not care about those and paid little to no attention to it.

There is so much I could comment about the game but the best way is to experience it yourself. This is masterpiece, nothing less. I got myself Gold version just to get all DLC Expansions. I am huge LotR fan and this game delivers so much.

It was a great game. It had improve almost everything from Shadow of Mordor. The game is not true to the original source (books) but it has a good history eitherway. Visual quality is not the best but it is fair when you see the big battles and the quantity of things and characters in screen to take or defend a fortress.

This is an early review, but I wanted to try to help counter all the zeroes from people who didn't even play. The bad reviews are only becasue of microtransactions, which would only speed up gameplay for those who want to get an advantage. None of it is required to play and enjoy the game.

If you enjoyed the first game, then this one is much like it just more options. More skills, better loot system, more orc varieties, an enjoyable story line so far, and just all around fun. You can also set difficulty this time. Bottom line is just buy the game and avoid the microtransactions if you hate them.

Is this a good game? Yes. It's fantastic. If you loved Shadow of Mordor, you won't be disappointed. If you played The Witcher, you won't be disappointed.

So what's with all of the negative reviews? Well, it's because of the microtransactions. It's just losers review-bombing the game as an act of protest. It's stupid and shouldn't be allowed. Take a look at all of the reviews. Not ONE of

Take a look at all of the reviews. Not ONE of them has a legitimate reason for rating the game poorly (maybe a couple do, but the others are ALL because of microtransactions). Just look at some of these: "Loot boxes are not allowed in the 60$ game!" "Game ruined by microtransactions." "Microtransactions." It's all bullcrap. You should absolutely buy this game. The gameplay is highly addicting, it's loads of fun...I'm not gonna lie, the story is pretty lacking, but other than that, the game is fantastic. Don't listen to those tools review-bombing this game because of the microtransactions. Don't want them? Just don't buy them.

I was annoyed by various flaws (both technical and design-related) and tedious, dragged out final stages of the campaign, but overall I enjoyed the ride. It looks like the developers wanted to stuff the game with all the best elements Middle-earth has to offer. Shadow of War’s atmosphere is terrific and watching Talion rise in power is surprisingly addictive. [12/2017, p.62]

A handful of issues, some much more annoying than others, do not negate how solid of an action RPG Middle-earth: Shadow of War is. A tremendous achievement for the team at Monolith Productions, this is an exciting, if not sometimes slow, and too often unfair, title that manages to be as impressively fun as it is big.

Big, brutal, and - alas - bloated, Shadow of War is a disappointing follow-up, conjuring battles of grand scale and then deadening their impact through grinding repetition. [December 2017, p.79]
