Please do not buy this game and stop supporting gaming devs like this one who are greedy SOBs. The game is a $$$ grab do your research first. Lets teach these gaming companies to stop slicing up games and selling it as DLC and season passes. We are the gamer who make these companies rich but we get nothing in return but pointless loot boxes and dlc that was originally cut from the real game. Bottom line it's a shell game. They know which shell has the ball but they hide if from the customer. Not going to fall for this tactic again. I work to hard for my money and I demand a full game and no DLC season pass BS and grind feast. By the way I am a black man who believes in unity for all. I say lets apply the same to the gaming industry and stop fighting each other while these fools count our money. There will be a day where the gamer control what content for the next season go AAA games. Lets get these devs to give use more not less for under 59.99. We can change the industry over night if we stop supporting these games and band together. Trust me. One love peace. Expand

And of course it isn't at the beginning. It starts with a strong atmosphere that quickly shoots itself in the food with the terrible fan fiction approach to the tolkien universe. Spider transforms into women? New "the one Ring"? Ok so far so bad, i can get behind that. Gameplay counts in the end. The Combat delivers imo, so does the nemesis system. So far so good. But than it get's to the tokens that u use to buy the "LootBoxes", terribly designed, they float in the air like coins in a f2p running game. Full immersion break right there in your face. Same goes for the jewels (which will buff your weapons) and armor. Picking them up locks you in a terrible animation that takes way to long. Well designed? Not really.
The Menus are even worse. They are uninspired and completely designed without the world of LotR in Mind. Easy to navigate? Yes but just not fun to look at. Besides this, it is fun to play but i've only played a few hours and the music already starts to get annoying. Then there are the "elven Soul arrows" who make annoying sounds which can't be turned off unlike the music and are nearly everywhere.

So the game has everything it needed to succeed but somewhere along the line of development, something must have happened. Something bad that influenced gameplay and design. But let's end this on a good note: The World is beautifully designed.

The last section of this game is a complete grind designed around frustration and edging you towards paying of orcs with RNG lootboxes with real money mobile phone F2Play model, ontop of paying £50. Its simply a way to ease this model in for the next game by saying (It's ok it was in Shaodw of War and this game and that so just deal with it etc) It feels very underhand to put them in at the end where they know most people would have reviewed before the end and moved on.

On balance , I can just about deal with cosmetic only (as long as I can still get some good loot playing) to support the on-going development of that game (Overwatch) as in more content.

After all, there will always be whales throwing £££ at things just to look the best. If they want to fund my game for me...?. But gameplay changing, cheats, more XP, more power, different versions, still have season passes its just layers of greed, therefore LINE CROSSED.

Thankfully it seems a lot of people are not falling for this and nonsense in Battlefront 2. Pay to Win and loot boxes crap needs to end now otherwise AAA gaming will be killed by corporate greed.

Basically imagine just the first game, with a kinda different story and, again, the microtransactions. While the story is prob average, it suffers heavily from the 4th act being a MASSIVE leveling grind and a halt to pretty much any momentum it had gained from the previous act. The beginning of Act 4 is the point where the game starts to heavily recommend you buy loot boxes because of the sudden massive level deficiency you find yourself in. With the amount of time it would take to grind your way to the point where you are able to do those quests, hours will have gone by and I can't accept that. For how little things changed from the 1st game to this one, throwing a massive road block in there around 3/4th the way through it is a slap in the face. All the good will that Monolith built up through the first game, with alot of stolen concepts from other games, is just completely gone now. I won't play another game in the series and prob never another Monolith game. They've lost a customer by their actions here.

Pros: there is some good content in this game. They definitely developed the story so it offers more entertainment but this is where everything positive ends.

Cons: That entertainment seems to be limited by microtransactions. You are impacted by how much thy degraded the loot. You can easily tell that they made it so much ‘difficult’ so you invest in this already expensive game to make it enjoyable. I’m a casual gamer and never felt the need to buy any loot chests etc … but this one is just asking you for money. Yes, you can get a better loot and there are ways to guarantee it, but it ALWAYS feels like it’s few levels too late. You are actually punished for not spending even more money in a freaking single player game.

With no respect to ppl standing behind such an awful business plan, I hope this will bite you back in the ‘behind’.

PS: I hope you guys won’t buy this game. There are better titles… or at least wait until it’s 60% off

Nothing interesting here, if you are a Tolkien fan the story is not canon and is not well narrated, the gameplay is 95% the same as ShadowOfModor from 2014, the graphics are even worse this time, which is a real shame, considering the powerful PC we can have these days. The microtransaction system (for a SP game, WTF ?) ends up burying the whole...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was enjoying this game despite the butchering of Tolkien lore, that was up until I hit level 25 with my character, and notice how much, much, much slower it raised when I received experience, I was levelling up like crazy, then it was like I hit a wall.

By this point in the game I had just conquered my first Fortress, so I tried the fight pits to level up my followers, my orcs couldn't level any higher than me, and I couldn't recruit any orcs who where a higher level than me.

The tediousness of the collect 'em up side quests had then dawned on me, and I remembered all the hub-bub about Loot-boxes and pay to win surrounding this game, and it gave me such a bad feeling. So much so I had to stop playing and look up Metacritic reviews.

Holy smokes! 406 negative reviews at the time of writing my own, compared to 194 positive, and 31 mixed. So I've been going over the bad reviews and learnt that at Act 4 the game becomes a grindy mess that reeks of mobile phone free to play shovel-ware, where you must recruit and level your followers to defeat massively over powered enemies assaulting your forts. Which could end up with you having to start from scratch, recruiting orcs and assaulting the fort yourself, if you lose.

All to see the true ending (which I know won't be worth it, they rarely are), or you can buy loot boxes with real world money, FOR A CHANCE at obtaining a high level orc!

Well after reading all this I thought "bugger right off Warner Bros" sent my game back for a refund. If the big wig publishers are to be believed, they are having a hard time recouping the cost of making these so called "triple A games". So all we have to do, when we hear of micro transactions, or something similar, is don't buy those games, don't pre-order them, just wait. The greed driven companies out there will see that their nickle and diming won't work, and they'll move on to a different medium to suck dry, like the creativity destroying parasites that they are.

I just knew something was wrong when Shadow of War was first announced, so soon after Shadow of Mordor.

    I though "that was quick"....

I am sad that a series like this had to be the one to take the fall for the industry's growing greed but someone has to. This needs to stop. Expand

The game would be an enjoyable one if the ending wasnt behind a 50 hour boring grind or like $50, i quite enjoyed the first chapters, but reaching the end after pure useless grind is not worth it to me, i just returned it and i sugest not buying this until this microtransaction stuff is fixed or when the goty edition is at a really reduced price.

2.it feels like the nemesis system is force down your throat, sometimes you just KNOW that the game wanted you to die right there
3.in the previous game the number of enemies were fix, but in this one they keep spawning all the time, so you cant ''plan'' and execute like before, overlord mission feel cheesy asf.
    4. the dmg you inflict is just to low compare to the dmg you take ex: a little grunt will take 25% of your HP per attack, the counter window is really smaller compare to the previous game, a captain CAN 1shoot you, when you are in these big fit, there is basically nothing you can do except run and even that dont usually work, feels unfair
    5.flying mechanic... my man... painful
6.mission seems harder the first time you do it, it feel like they want to force death upon you
    7. fighting wraith is disgusting, counter window to small, they attack off screen you barely see it and so punishing and if you fight them while fighting other orc, i was dying inside
8.i was chasing this legendary orc that was godlike and when i finally dominated him he lost some of his attribute....? wtf is going
9.at some point i sent my epic orc on a mission, give him 2 reinforcement and for some reason my epic orc did some dmg (i think) to the 2 others and they started attacking him and they killed him ...?! this happened to me twice.... wtf AI
    10. the AI .... is really bad....
last but not least micro transaction , i dont think it has his place in a full priced game but it wasnt intrusive but then again i cant stop thinking about how this game could have been without it

so this game is ''good'' sometimes but the frustration you get from playing it just destroy those little moment of happiness, the only thing this game gave me, its a bad after taste in the mouth, feels bad man

This is the type of future MS always envisioned when they entered the gaming business, a direct connection to your living room and 24 hour revenue stream from playing a game you already payed for. The practice is extremely greedy and the profit at any cost is very short sighted. Gamers are not to be trifled with, we are too smart for that. Boycott any developer who supports this practice.

This could have been a great game, an amazing game, that's what frustrates me the most. The other extremely frustrating thing is the complete lack of honesty & integrity of most of the critics. It's pretty obvious that Shadow of War was delayed 2 months to give Monolith time to jam this game full of hours & hours of mindless grinding.

Unfortunately, I feel that at this point the only option is for government to step in & regulate these predatory gambling systems. I really don't want that to happen but that's exactly what's going on here, gambling with real money in a game that is intentionally vague & secretive about the odds. I've signed every online petition I could find, requesting government to step in a curb these practices that seem to be targeted towards children & people with addictive personalities.

Giant companies don't need white knights. Anti-consumer business practices drastically impact this game, devs did very little to mask their intent. 2 months wasn't enough time to prevent the complete ruination of what clearly used to be a great game. It's still there, gasping for air, struggling not to be suffocated by garbage.

Greed proved too alluring for Monolith/WB, this single player game is the epitome of pay to win. Not only that but the methods used to incentivize/strong arm players to fork out more money, are truly pervasive & predatory. Think any F2P mobile game, only $60-$100. They intentionally made the back end of this game painfully boring, to devistating effect.

The game is not balanced, Monolith. After 12-15 hours of gameplay, I'd received zero gold, but I had plenty of worthless mirian. This is a problem because mirian, the currency that you actually earn steadily in game for killing enemies and completing quests, is essentially worthless. Only the lowest tier crates & upgrades can be purchased with the silver mirian, everything else requires gold. Gold is doled, out at an unbearably stingy rate, an obvious attempt to get you to spend real money. Monolith and WB didn't just use the F2P playbook, they copied it.

The drop rate quality from the low tier mirian chests are so poor-mediocre, it's a joke. I pre-ordered the gold edition, so I got to check out the real lootcrates while experiencing the gold drought. As expected, the low tier crates don't even compare.

The game was good, until about halfway through when you begin to notice how grindy & repetitive it's becoming. By the final act (54 hours of storyless, mindless grinding to dominate/level up high enough level Orcs/Uruk) the game becomes painful work. The mechanics & overall feel only serve to remind you of what could have been. In an obvious attempt to separate you from your wallet, Shadow of War doesn't even attempt to hide its true intentions at this point.

It's baffling to me, did these critics play the same game I did? Are they just that compromised? The only reasons I can think that this game would receive the score it did, is that either the critics didn't play the entire game or they aren't being honest. I don't know which one is worse.

The entire 1st half, Shadow of War got my hopes up, I was thinking "Hey maybe they did it right, greed didn't screw the game up." Then the third & mostly the forth act crash through that thought like a freight train. Nope they ruined a potentially amazing game.

I won't be purchasing any other games that Monolith is even remotely connected to until they see the errors of their ways & decide to start caring about their customers. I don't see that happening any time soon but I can live with that. There are still a few great companies out there, like CD Projekt Red. I'm aware that WB published the Witcher 3 but you can clearly see that CDPR wasn't going to allow them to ruin an incredible game. Monolith was all too happy to lie straight to our faces & collect their loot.

The animation they decided to use for the Marketplace in Shadow of War is incredibly ironic, a really ugly orc grinning & incessantly rubbing his disgusting hands together in glee. That's what I picture going on at Monolith/WB every time they read a review written by a dishonest shill, every time someone uses their credit card to buy gold, etc..

Its exactly what everyone was afraid they would do, what everyone predicted would be the natural progression of these business practices years ago.

Don't buy this game, or at least don't buy it at full price. Wait until it becomes heavily discounted, if you must. The bottom line is I regret paying over $100 for pre-ordering the gold edition of Shadow of War, I won't ever be making that mistake again. I really hope it was worth it, Monolith/WB, & the dishonest critics/shills. You've broken a lot more than trust & I won't forget that.

We need publishers/developers with the same mindset such as CDPR. It can be done people. Keep the faith and never support microtransactions in full priced games

Disgusting and awful, no one should support these kinda games. On top of that the game is too much like the first one. Would be nice if you could play as an Orch that climbing the ranks, and then create an amazing adventure regarding that. Also the PEGI-mark needs to show that the game contains gambling, it's very missleading for parents.

Don't be sheeps!! Bare some teeth and fight against a blatant and disgusting business practice. Don't let the industry ruin your hobby! Micro transaction like this is not okay!

This garbage game is a total grind by the end which is likely because of micro-transactions. Game balance is totally off - don't buy this game! I wish I had not pre-ordered this title, biggest mistake ever! Not buying any more WB games from now on.

I was annoyed by various flaws (both technical and design-related) and tedious, dragged out final stages of the campaign, but overall I enjoyed the ride. It looks like the developers wanted to stuff the game with all the best elements Middle-earth has to offer. Shadow of War’s atmosphere is terrific and watching Talion rise in power is surprisingly addictive. [12/2017, p.62]

A handful of issues, some much more annoying than others, do not negate how solid of an action RPG Middle-earth: Shadow of War is. A tremendous achievement for the team at Monolith Productions, this is an exciting, if not sometimes slow, and too often unfair, title that manages to be as impressively fun as it is big.

Big, brutal, and - alas - bloated, Shadow of War is a disappointing follow-up, conjuring battles of grand scale and then deadening their impact through grinding repetition. [December 2017, p.79]
