I played the first game, Shadow of Mordor through twice 100% in less than the time i've already spent on one playthrough of Shadow of War. (EDIT: I forgot to mention that i also played all of the DLC through in that time.) And frankly, i must say that Shadow of War is better, in every way that it can be. The graphics are nice, the game runs better, there's no longer these useless or annoying sidequests, but they are replaced with actual, interesting story content. The nemesis system is better in every way, and helping your followers feels good, (even though after you've conquered all of mordor you have little connection to your followers anymore.) The game is basically just better in every way. God i loved the Nazgul fights.
But never in those over 50 hours of gameplay did i experience an impassable paywall where i either have to grind for 50 hours or pay money to get through act4. I actually spent an hour per area, hunting for good captains, assigned warchiefs and upgraded my fortresses with the money i had gathered throughout the game, (and i spent about 50 000 miriam on lootboxes just to see what i'd get at lower levels)
Having upgraded all my forts to a the fullest extent i could, in less than 5 hours of gaming i started playing the sieges. Oh damn, i just won, and they didn't even breach a wall. Damn well i guess it will get harder. But it never did, i just dominated orcs during the sieges always getting the max level guys i could. You get a level per siege so keeping up with the enemy isn't a problem.
I only lost 2 sieges and those were because of my own error, and not because of the level of my fort or my followers.
Not once in my playthrough did i face a paywall or even notice the microtransactions.
I also saw someone complaining that their followers started dying all the time, well that's because you didn't go revive them or you just generally didn't look after them. Never was a problem for me.

All in all the game was totally worth the money i spent on it, i will buy the expansions to the game, because i absolutely loved the experience. All of you who are complaining about the microtransactions or the paywall or what have you, have not played the game or suck very deeply.

So everyone complaining about the Micro transactions are either very lazy they’re not very good games. I understand that micro transactions can be frustrating if it hinders you from playing the game the way it was intended to be pLayed but there is no reason to complain about this game about that. If micro transactions Hinder you then I agree that it is totally corrupt especially if you’re buying a new game but that is not true with this game! This game is honestly not difficult ! I did the daily quests and earned enough online currency to buy the two starter loot boxes (Act 1 and Act 2) about 1300 coins. I received over 20 orcs, 8 xp boosts, and a handful of in game currency boosts. I used my XP boosts while I was playing the numerous main and side quests. Doing this I was able to skyrocket to level 60 and never feel like I was grinding, sometimes gaining two or three levels at once. Be careful though because they only last for two hours of real time, so make sure you use that time wisely. The only "grind" part was getting my orcs at a higher for the Stage Defenses of my Fortresses. This did take me about 5 hours to get all my fortresses leveled to my level. But, since then I haven't purposefully leveled a single orc, at worst during my siege defenses, I capture more powerful orcs and put them in place of the weaker ones. With all that said, the facial graphics during game play is the reason I gave this a 9. As for all the complaints about the loot boxes, I did not pay for a single one and am still having a great time. Expand

In truth though, you don't need the boxes nor do you have to do anything but complete the content to beat the game and get through the narrative.

What is god awful here is the thing everybody adored in the 1st title: The nemesis system. I personally found it a novelty in the 1st game, but here it is so overdone that it ruins the entire experience. Fine, hunt down a captain, that's good. He kills you and gets stronger, ok. Hunt him down for revenge, that's great. Have 6 captains "MAGICALLY appear" on top of that vengeance target and be all varying levels (I was level 2, that got killed by a lvl 9, then lvl10 and then was surrounded by 6 Lvl 5-15 captains). Not only that, but each, and, every, one, had, to, wax, poetic, about, how, they, were, going, to, kill, me. And yea this is an option you can turn off, but really I didn't think 6 FREAKING CAPTAINS WOULD JUST POP ON TOP OF ME!

The menus are another unmitigated mess. They are so convoluted I honestly think the designer and programmer were drinking buddies and worked on them through all-night drunken binges. It's astonishingly bad. My eyes hurt fiddling around in them.

You can take narrative liberties from time to time, but Shelob is the most ham-fisted insertion to grace this series. The time scale for events are just completely out of sync with the LOTR. Minas Ithil is long gone by the time of the war of the ring. The argument could be made that well, we are at those events. Well then, explain Gollum being in Mordor from the 1st title! He wouldn't have been there! Hell, he'd still be wallowing in a freakin cave under Moria!!

The worst part of all of this..is the entirety of the game...is just boring. You are doing the same handful of things over and over and over and OVER! It's just one giant collect-O-thon within the confines of the map, and really silly online "vendetta" targets for some reason. You get gear....but....it's just gear. Nothing about this is needed, it's just PADDING!

Bloat, bloat and lazy programming with a shamble of a writer's team make up this title. Couple that with a ridiculous terms of service agreement (Forced Arbitration with an option to opt out in 30 days) and the fact if you don't accept the terms of service, you can't play the game and you can't return the game (because you opened it). It's a damn catch 22 and it's gotta be illegal!

Pass on this, pass on this hard. If I can avoid it, I will steer clear of ANY WB game in the future.

i just completed on nemesis difficulty without ever putting any extra money into the game and the "grinding" is not necessary, playing the game normally had me at lvl 43 at the final zone where the recommended level was 40.
The game is pretty much a copy of the previous one with many improvements. Every single upgrade you get when leveling has 3 subcategories to improve the skill. Killing captains now drops gear instead of runes (runes have been simplified and are dropped by regular orcs), 5 regions compared to the 2 of the previous game.
The game is really fun and as a LotR fan i thoroughly enjoyed it, even if the story doesn't really follow actual LotR lore.

Talion is back in a continuing adventure in the land of Mordor. Following the events of Shadow of Mordor, Monolith Productions and Warner Brothers brings us Shadow of War. Does Shadow of war rule middle earth or should it have been burned and destroyed along with the rings? Let us find out.

Story: The story picks up right from the events of Shadow of Mordor you are back playing as Talion and Celebrimbor. In the very beginning of the game, we see them making a new ring to fight against Sauron and the Azgul. There is a war happening in middle earth in this installment of the series between the Orcs, Uruks and Olacs and the Minas Ithil. You take sides with Minas Ithil to help them win the war; however, down the line you find out there is a traitor in the Minas Ithil. In the story, we run in to new characters that have an effect in the story like Shelob, a woman who can turn in to a big spider, which is cool in my opinion. She takes Celebrimbor as a hostage in exchange for the ring you created, so that she can take on Sauron herself. As the story continues, it became more confusing because there was so much going on with all the different characters and became less interesting as I progressed through it. There are four different acts throughout the story the second being by far the longest.

Game play: The game play in Shadow of War is pretty much the same as the first one but with more RPG elements. However, it adds a few things as well; we still have the fighting style that we have seen in the Batman series. One thing I really enjoyed and found very annoying at the same time was the fortress raids. In order to progress through some of the story you need to take over these fortresses to clear the region. While doing some of these missions you feel like your weapons are never strong enough to defeat all the captains at one check point, but luckily I was able to beat this game without using the micro transactions. Throughout the game, you will brawl, use stealth, manipulate and climb your way through Gondor. Another feature I found in this game that was a bit tedious was building your own army. How you do this is by recruiting captains after you weaken them and they help you when it is time to do a fortress raid and take on the overlord of the fortress. This is not mandatory but it helps when it comes to difficulty but I just found it tedious. Game play design is not great in this case and unfortunately is one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to games. When you clear a camp, it should remain cleared and not have the enemies re-spawn. As you progress through the story you will run in to a fair bit of collectibles like artifacts and memories which are words that go to a poem that unlocks a door and behind that door is a high level armor or weapon.

Conclusion: Shadow of War is a fun game but by the time, I hit the Twelve-hour mark I felt it became very lack luster, and I just wanted to be finished. It has lot of new additions to compare to the first one, but does not feel as polished. The story is far less interesting and has a lot going on with it between the characters and your character that is becomes hard to follow. With some game play flaws that are very noticeable it becomes very lack luster just a few hours in to the game I struggled just to finish it but the pay off at the end of the game was worth it.

I don't normally write reviews, but I think this has to be said: don't buy this game. If you buy this game, you are supporting one of the largest anti-consumer companies I've ever seen. I'd say that at this point, WB Games is even worse than EA.

The only reward for the grind is more grind, lootboxes are unnescessary. Also microtranactions for loot things really?

The upgrade level system is a little too much though. There is a lot going on and the menus can get a little confusing. Also the the gear is really awesome and it adds a little character to Talion. Now the whole thing about micro transactions. Don't buy them. All you get is orcs and that will beat the entire point of the game, so I understand the complains, but just do not buy them. Game would be more enjoyable except for a microtransaction system integral to viewing the "true" ending of the game. Either grind the same things for 30 hours, or pay extra money. As a full priced, single player game, microtransactions are simply unforgivable.

Not acceptable to make a awesome game and then load it up with greedy MT and lootcrates.. sure you don't have to buy them but it was clear they made the game extremely grindy towards the end in order to try to get lazy people to pay $$ for lootcrates.. this is why your game fails and guess what?? People whining and wetting themselves over the loot feature havent even played the fantastic story mode. Buy this game and appreciate it for what it is, one of the most fun adventures (and best looking) around. Warning though! The AI, aka Nemesis System, is scary good.

Nothing interesting here, if you are a Tolkien fan the story is not canon and is not well narrated, the gameplay is 95% the same as ShadowOfModor from 2014, the graphics are even worse this time, which is a real shame, considering the powerful PC we can have these days. The microtransaction system (for a SP game, WTF ?) ends up burying the whole...

From the get-go this game amazes everyone: the different type of Uruks that forces you to think more strategically, the new-and-improved Nemesis system that helps the player shape his/hers own storylines, and even though the main story might be slow and uninteresting in the beginning of the game, it does excite you and makes you want continue the story in the long run. However, when you reach Act IV, the joy that you felt quickly goes away when you come across what may be on of the most laziest design choice in the history of video games, and this is where those lootboxes that you heard so much about come into the play.
Act IV is basically you defending the forts that you captured throughout the game. Now, it does not sound that bad, but when you realize that all the Uruk captains that you dominated are severely under leveled, that the attacking captains have a million strengths and maybe a few (or worse - just one) weaknesses, and the enemy forces can and will wipe the floor with your allies, the merriment that you once had will slowly fade away. Now, you may be saying: "Hey, it's just a difficulty spike at the end of the game, it doesn't sound that bad". No, you are wrong, and even after you defend all of the forts, guess what, YOU HAVE TO DEFEND THOSE FIVE FORTS ALL OVER AGAIN, AND THIS TIME, THE ENEMY CAPTAINS ARE EVEN TRIPLE THE LEVEL THAT YOUR CAPTAINS ARE. I didn't mention the best part: to acquire Uruks who are high enough level, you have to grind the **** out of the game, or JUST BUY OUR LOOTBOXES AND PRAY THAT YOU GET AN URUK THAT IS STRONG ENOUGH. So, this is why I think this game deserves a three, and I do not think I will be finishing this game.

This game is fun, but even I was skeptic towards buying the game seeing how a lot of talks were going around how the game is pay to win because of the loot boxes. That does not seem to be the case at the end of the day one can play this game without loot boxes and enjoy it thoroughly, but purchasing them does make it easier to progress throughout the game.

The game itself has an fantastic nemesis system that makes the game feel alive. As you are progressing through the story itself, it feels like you are creating your own story by killing orcs or making them follow you as one of your companions. They really developed the nemesis system into something great seeing how orcs that worked with you helped you capture a fortress might one day turn on you and conquer everything you worked so hard to get.

The combat system is flawless, its pretty much the same as the previous game with a few new niches to it to make it a little bit better. Plus the new RPG elements of upgrading your hero is more in-depth and lets you form Talion and Celebrimbor into the hero of Mordor you want to be.

The scenery is impressive, the regions are all beautiful and different, but sadly the gameplay is pretty much the same in every area except that some areas got one type of enemies with some power that isn't as usual in another province.

I don't want to put the focus on microtransactions, they are there, and I don't like them, but I won't let them ruin my gaming experience, and I won't let them keep me away from playing a great game. If you ignore them and don't purchase them then maybe the gaming companies will stop putting them in the games, you might even boycott the game overall to make a statement towards the company group if you want to do that go for it.

Either way, the game is much better than the first one and would probably get amazing reviews if it wasn't for the microtransactions being in there. It isn't something groundbreaking, but they took a working recipe from the first game and upgraded it into a worthy sequel.

If you like what I read make sure to take a look at my blog for more reviews like this, just google therealzadeh and you will find it.

Its literally "pay and go to the next chapter, pay to get the weapon that does 5444 damage vs the sword you get in the game that does 77 damage." Those are extremes that "Shadow of War" doesn't go to. Mobile apps also rely heavily on what is referred to as a "whale". The 5% of the people who get the game for free who encompass more than half of the overall profit of. Nobody aims a gun to their head to make them pay.

If you owned a company and could make a profit doing this, you would all do it. If you have willpower to play the game and not even look at the micro-transactions (buy the stuff with in game currency or actually earn your loot) then it would be a pleasant experience. It is NOT grindy in my opinion because it is fun to use some strategy and kill/capture the harder orcs. Also, you do not need to pay to beat the game, you do not hit a steep wall that you cannot get past unless you pay, you can enjoy it regardless. You guys are so annoying, giving this game 0/10's when it is actually an extremely fun game with plenty of things to do.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Middle-Earth: Shadow of War is not just the best Lord of the Rings game, it is one of the best games ever made. Easily GOTY 2017.
It takes what made previous game, Shadow of Mordor, so great and doubles everything, at minimum. It does everything better.

Story follows Talion (Troy Baker ) and Celebrimbor (Alistair Duncan), after the events of first game. They create new ring and aim to conquer all of Mordor. Same time, Dark Lord's forces gather all around them preparing for the final battle, that will decide the fate of whole of MIddle-Earth.

Story is very well written and has several absolutely fantastic twist on the way to end. There are several absolutely marvelous characters and atmosphere is just what it should be.

This is also pretty long game, but it is not too long or repetitive. Certain basic gameplay elements are there whole time. Nemesis system is the big deal and orcs come in so many diffrent shapes and skills. Combat does not get boring, it is very engaging, thanks to one of the best combat mechanics ever created. It is easy to learn but difficult to master.

There is also so many those little things that really make this game that good. There is so many lore in there to be found. Many artifacts have story of their own and many very famous characters also have so much more story in them.
I must say that the first time Witch-King of Angmar emerged from the shadows, was absolutely fantastic moment and boss battle is one of the best ever in so many ways. One thing I would change thou is the fact that his weapons are not that good. Sure, it is loyal to the source material, but I would have added a sword for him and made his weapon look more different from Saurons (like in the movie).

To point out few of the worst things in game, first that comes to mind is pit fights. Those are so bad and boring. To a certain point those are not even that difficult but champion level is brutal and that is the point when you are furious when you see how incompetent those orcs are. They do not do what they are suppose to do.
Also, micro transactions, cancer of gaming. It is there, but you do not have to use it. Sure, its makes the game easier but I managed very well without it.
Also, there is certain community points in game, but I really do not care about those and paid little to no attention to it.

There is so much I could comment about the game but the best way is to experience it yourself. This is masterpiece, nothing less. I got myself Gold version just to get all DLC Expansions. I am huge LotR fan and this game delivers so much.

The story is fantastic, which is obviously expected from one of the biggest franchises in modern history. The combat is still in my opinion the best combat out there in gaming, very fast, very slick. The loot change was needed in my opinion from the first one. Where you just got runes to upgrade your gear, you now drop new weapons and armour, along with upgrades and runes to make them more powerful.
The reason I gave this an 7 and not a 10 is simply because of it's price tag, yes, microtransactions and bugs. $60 for a single player game with very small multiplayer implementations, and that's only the base game. You'll need to fork out extra for expansions if you didn't buy the higher editions of the game. It's wrong to have microtransactions, but, they aren't something you need to buy to beat the game, yes you need to grind for better gear to be able to finish the game, but overall, it's something to give you a boost, nothing more. BUT, having said that, WB are a disgrace, and being a multi billion dollar publisher, it's very wrong to ask for MORE money like they are, especially when you have 3 editions of your game.
So, to the people giving this game a 0 simply because of MT's, you're idiots who simply haven't even played the game, who're following the crowd because it's not "cool" to hate on video games without even using the brain you was given.

Micro transactions have nothing to do with completing the game. Quit with all the whining. You are not giving a fair review and no one wins when we do this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The combat mechanics and the nemesis system are the only reason that this is getting a 4 from me, they have been greatly improved since shadow of mordor. The story on the other hand is absolutely rotten, as a massive fan of Tolkiens work it sickens me to see his lore broken to such a degree that it actually bothers me more than the microtransactions (we'll get to them shortly). The way they portrayed shelob as some sort of shape shifting psychic is just so immersion breaking. same goes for the ringwraiths, to make isildur and helm hammerhand ringwraiths is a spit in the face to Tolkien and its constantly on my mind while trying to get through the monotonous grind. Now as for the microtransactions, I haven't felt the need or urge to purchase any lootboxes because I would rather earn my gear and orcs but to put them in a fully priced singleplayer game is an unnecessary distraction that takes away from the experience, it is always subtly leading you to the marketplace shoving them in you're face. It also affects the balance substantially towards the end with you having to constantly defend your strongholds in order to get the true ending, the grind at this stage is so tedious that it would force a lot of people to just spend their money to get through it, either that or if you're like me it will force you to quit the game and watch the ending on youtube. This game would have been so much more interesting and enjoyable if they used the lore that Tolkien had written and if they hadn't included the balance breaking microtransactions. Expand

Microtransactions in an $60 single player game is like buying a nice car and then after driving it for 1 year, a message pops up on the dashboard saying you can only drive a maximum of 40 mph unless you purchase more "credits".

    Unacceptable filthy greed.

Do the Microtransactions take anything away from the game? the answer is yes and no. The game overall is solid, but the microtransactions and loot-crates are in the game and are very noticeable. The biggest issue is the end game where the ending is locked behind tedious grinding defending all of your forts successfully or you can fast track that by buying legendary orcs/uruks/trolls... overall at its core it is a great game that has lost part of its soul by corporate greed.

Please do not buy this game and stop supporting gaming devs like this one who are greedy SOBs. The game is a $$$ grab do your research first. Lets teach these gaming companies to stop slicing up games and selling it as DLC and season passes. We are the gamer who make these companies rich but we get nothing in return but pointless loot boxes and dlc that was originally cut from the real game. Bottom line it's a shell game. They know which shell has the ball but they hide if from the customer. Not going to fall for this tactic again. I work to hard for my money and I demand a full game and no DLC season pass BS and grind feast. By the way I am a black man who believes in unity for all. I say lets apply the same to the gaming industry and stop fighting each other while these fools count our money. There will be a day where the gamer control what content for the next season go AAA games. Lets get these devs to give use more not less for under 59.99. The game is better than the first, the microtransactions are in the background and not forced at you, and you certainly do not need them to beat the game. People are just following the crowd. Loot boxes are not allowed in the 60$ game! We need to fight back now, otherwise tomorrow we will be offered 60$ for the game, then for 80$ for Season pass and for 100$ to open 5-6 boxes in which the entire content of the game will be found. If the WB gets away with it, then this is the future that awaits us all.

Since seems that, not all of them, but many of those who gave the 0-3 score (and wow, there are a whole lot of them) and bash on the game in their reviews, only lifts "Microtransactions" as their issue. Well, I can say this much - I got so much Mirian already early on, that I could easily spend a whole lot of it, and yet never feeling poor - cause like in other game’s with systems like this, the paid storefront here, feels less predatory and actually more like an unnecessary addition. The only difference (as I see it) is that the better and expensive chests just hands guaranteed better loot, but I personally rather get that in-game anyway.

The GFX is gorgeous and the enviroments is stunning, as is the details on the Orc Generals/Officers, armor and weapons. The Nemesis system feels both familiar and improved since the first. The Skill-tree has some nice and awesomely helpful abilities, while others just feel "MEHH!!". Still there is variety enough that early on they matters, but later on you'll most likely have covered them all. Even though the Armor & Weapons looks neat and cool, but their abilities doesnt hand the same variety and awesomeness, also it becomes a tedious task to always be in need to un-lock their bonus abilities as soon as you get a better piece.

The story is not all that compelling, but it doesn't bother me all that much since there is so many other things to do (some of the stuffs can after a while feel bit repetative). At its core it is a great experience, and for me personally, this game is a brilliant game that gives me more flesh and insight to one of the many untold stories in Middle Earth.

Game ruined by microtransactions. This game is getting good scores from the legacy gaming media because they never have and never will look out for the consumer. If a publisher wants to ruin their game by putting gambling via microtransactions in at the cost of quality then they must accept the poor review scores from the consumer.

I was annoyed by various flaws (both technical and design-related) and tedious, dragged out final stages of the campaign, but overall I enjoyed the ride. It looks like the developers wanted to stuff the game with all the best elements Middle-earth has to offer. Shadow of War’s atmosphere is terrific and watching Talion rise in power is surprisingly addictive. [12/2017, p.62]

A handful of issues, some much more annoying than others, do not negate how solid of an action RPG Middle-earth: Shadow of War is. A tremendous achievement for the team at Monolith Productions, this is an exciting, if not sometimes slow, and too often unfair, title that manages to be as impressively fun as it is big.
