Little faults to the game itself. The main one, is the length.
you CAN finish the game in 20 minutes if you wish. That reduces from the final value by a lot, and right now I consider it NOT a short game, but a long DEMO, and expensive for a demo.

if the game was even 5 dollars cheaper, it would be easier to recommend, but right now, I can mainly recommend it to loyal fans

It's hard to score this game a six, but it has to be done. The main reason MGS is so successful is because it offers hours of quirky, badly acted cutscenes. Good) and visually its a great looker. The PS4 boasts the best version of all formats but for what you get for the money is very little. DEMO has been screamed from all corners and its hard to argue with. If you're a die hard MGS fan then snap it up, you'll collude with the game to make it more than it is which will make it very rewarding. For the rest, wait for the price to drop (Drastically!) or like me you'll be cursing your lack of patience. Expand

Metal gear Ground Zeroes is unique in that there are things I love and hate about the game.

The positive points of this game:

Lets start off by saying how great the graphics look because of the new fox engine. Even on older systems like the ps3 and the xbox 360 the world looks incredible. Lighting different different times of the day helps to show off how brilliant the fox engine really is.

Controls have improved to feel much more natural. The game focuses on real time gameplay by taking away the camo index and the weapon and equipment windows and replacing them with one wheel for weapons and equipment. The new weapon wheel makes switching to different guns and your night visions goggles easy and quick. The system is simlar to using the d pad in games like Resident Evil 5 and Dead Space. The learning curve for this game is fast and finally the controls feel natural.

The Mechanics add to the depth of the game by introducing bullet drop when your weapon starts to get out of its effective range. Red cross hairs indicate where the bullet will hit while white cross hairs have to be adjusted because the player will have to aim a little higher at further distances to score a head shot on an enemy. The ability to tag soldiers to see their position on Snake's map helps to understand what corners and objects soldiers are behind. Destructible building and barriers help to add to the believably of this real world environment. Finally vehicles such as jeeps, trucks, and even tanks can be driven and can be used as the player sees fit.

The different missions all have different objectives to help the player really understand the different options the player has at his or her disposal as well as content to continue playing after the main story has been completed.

The AI has been vastly improved with enemy combatants being able to see you from far away. Running around is a good way to get spotted. Crouching and crawling is highly advised to avoid detection. Enemies are smarter and work together by radioing for backup and for additional soldiers to help investigate suspicious persons or when the power is turned off or security cameras are destroyed. Being an one giant open area the entire base will work together to attack you if discovered. Reflex mode has been added to give the player a slow motion second to neutralize the guards or shot a camera out if spotted to avoided a base wide alert.

Calling a transport helicopter into to different areas of the map make the player decide which area has the highest and lowest risk of the helicopter to be shot down by the enemy. The player can literally spend hours rescuing prisoners and knocking out Marines and having them extracted by the support chopper.

    The bad points:
The game is short no matter how much time you take to complete a mission. Most people can beat the story in an hour and half. My first play through having no idea what to do, I watched all the cut scenes, rescued all seven prisoners, and still used stealth to sneak around the base and my clear time was 44 minutes. That is the longest mission because most of the other missions and be beaten in 10 to 20 minutes depending on player skill and difficulty level.

The re playable content is really repetitive with the only thing that changes is the primary mission objective. There are six missions including the main story mission but they all involve the same map, so after the third of fourth mission you will already have the guards and the lay out of the base memorized.

The guards are always the same with no variety. One type of enemy with no boss fights in the entire game. The only thing the player has to worry about is if an enemy is in a tank, other than that you approach and fight every opponent exactly the same.

Metal Gear Solid fans will be sad to learn that many of the features in the old games have been left out of this game. The game has no cardboard box, no health or stamina bar, no rations, no codec calls, and very short cut scenes. Instead the game introduces regenerative health similar to Call of Duty with the screen turning red with blood spots until the player hides behind cover and waits for Snake's health to regenerate. Interactive codec calls have been replaced with Kaz Miller just talking about obvious hints for the player can undoubtedly figure out on their own with common sense. The gameplay feels more like a Splinter Cell game than a Metal Gear Solid game.

    My final verdict:
I give Ground Zeroes a 6 out of 10 because the game is fun in the short time that it lasts but the small amount of content makes me wonder how Konami justifies the 30 dollar price tag for next generation systems. The shift to new play style is both fun and disappointing for long term Metal Gear Solid fans. I would recommend for everyone to rent this game or if they have to own it buy it on last gen systems for 20 dollars because this game isn't worth 30 dollars.

It's a shame because the gameplay (but not as much as others MGS because of the lack of tool/weapons), the graphics and the story are still amazing (and I do recommend to play it if you want the link between Peace Walker and Phantom Pain). It was just way too expensive, half priced (15€/$) or a rent are the best way to play it without having the feeling of being Konami's cow.

Yes, it may take a few hours if you do side-missions, and it will probably take even 10 hours if you spend 8 hours looking at the sky, however, at the end of the day, it's a approx. 1 hour game, and it should be called a demo (and be free) if you ask me.

Others have mentioned the length issue so I won't retrod that ground. All I want to know is: What in the hell is happening to the Metal Gear franchise? As someone who played since the beginning of Metal Gear back on NES, I've watched as the game has changed from action to tactical action to tactical espionage and, modernly, a "cinematic" experience. MGS1 and MGS2 undeniably had some lengthy codex sequences but they usually came in between lengthy periods of gameplay. Beginning with MGS3 and increasing throughout MGS4 and now MGS5: Ground Zeroes, the player spends most of their time listening to dialog or sitting in cutscenes with actual gameplay limited to sneak-and-shoot just long enough to trigger more dialog or more cutscenes. Even the story telling falls by the wayside, lost amid the spectacle of "did you see that cutscene!" hype.

At this point, I wish Kojima would just retire the series and turn it into the movie franchise he clearly has wanted it to be since MGS3.

It's gets so repetitive and how long you want to be sneaking around anyway? It's not fun after 1 hour. So thanks for showing me the gameplay that is to be in Phantom Pain. Cos now I know I won't buy it and won't have to waste time on it cos I won't enjoy it. Many people would. Not me though.

Another problem I have with the game is the main character. Guys, it's 2015 well, 2016 now why can't we create our character?? I don't want to play this random old man with an eye patch. Same thing with the Witcher, who happen to be even older than Venom Snake. Omg what's with the popularity of old men these days?? lol.

If you do, you'll see that i love this series, will always defend it but more importantly, I'll always be honest about my reviews! Well, lets get started. The graphics: simply amazing! I thought killzone shadowfall looked great but this games is amazing in the graphics department. The gameplay is the same except you can run by pressing L3 which is(in my own opinion) weird to due in a metal gear game. Controls: well they are essentially the same with some exceptions like running. The radio is accessed by pressing L2. Story: um....you might want to sit down for this if you haven't heard it from mr. Kojima himself but this is nothing more than a demo! But it revoles around saving paz and chico which doesn't exactly go as planned. Your in a military camp with plenty of open space to traverse but sadly this is where the problems comes into play for ground zeros. I want to say that this camp is snakes personal play ground but there's so little to do in it besides sneak around,go all out or die! Almost all buildings are locked! But you can enter vehicles which, in retrospect, makes this worse since there's little to do in your environment. The camo system has been removed and replaced with...um....nothing! They also removed the boxes, bandages, rations, back pain meds, stamina gage when hanging and just about anything else that made metal gear solid...well...metal gear solid. This games atmosphere is far from any metal gear game, meaning, i didnt feel like i was playing metal gear but some sort of cheap knock off of metal gear! Why? Well, everytime you vet noticed, the game slows down time for you, giving you MORE than enough time to head shot any enemies who spotted you thus ending the alarm status if successful and you will be successful, and this is where this demo differs from previous entries in this great series. The metal gear mood has been replaced with your typical main stream third person shooter. Automatic health regen takes away the strategy that came with rations....i dont care about this game being short because this is nothing more than a cash grab demo which i rented. No one should buy this game, NO ONE! Fan or not, this demo sbould be avoided even by hardcore mgs fans. I see this demo being released along with the game of the year edition of the phantom pain! There's nothing exactly wrong with this demo with five extra missions but as far as metal gear games go...phantom pain seems to be heading in a different direction even though past metal gear games can still work! I give this demo what it actually deserves....5/10!! Since there's no way on this earth that ANYONE will keep playing this short demo with five missions that take place in the same area as the main mission, more than a few times....you'll forget this demo as quickly as it can be beaten! MGSV:GZ is a very nice open sandbox mission with a nice moody environment during a night thunderstorm. And the gameplay is great offering a new "reflex" mode if you get spotted by an enemy which slows down into bullet time mode allowing you to take out the enemy with a headshot. You can also you a various array of vehicles to get anywhere you want on the map if you prefer going guns blazing.

That all being said the biggest problem with this game is it's length. If you take your time on the main mission and collect all the XOF patches and rescue all the prisoners you can finish it in about 3 hours. But on my first run I ended up finishing it in an hour. There are some extra side missions that are set on the same map but they're only there as an extra mode and don't really offer anything different since it's all on the same map, with the exception of Deja Vu mode where you have to recreate scene's from previous MGS games by getting poses and camera exactly right.

All in all you can cover everything in the game in about 5 hours, and honestly at the price they're asking for, I cannot recommend buying this game. If you're interested in the game, rent it. That's the nicest advice I can offer. Otherwise you're best waiting for The Phantom Pain.

    I beat this game in 23 minutes. It's $30. That's more than $1/minute.

Don't buy this game. Rent it for a day. I own every MGS and every game Kojima has ever made (including Policenauts, Snacher, etc) Now that we've covered the fact that this is a $30 demo and a shameless cash-grab that will undoubtedly be a huge tarnish on the otherwise amazing reputation of our beloved Kojima,

Now that we've covered the fact that this is a $30 demo and a shameless cash-grab that will undoubtedly be a huge tarnish on the otherwise amazing reputation of our beloved Kojima, let's move on to all of the changes to the game itself.

0.) NO CODEC! - You know that little communication radio? The small feature that let you call people, save games, get help, get hints, hear funny conversations, etc? You know, the little thing that has been in EVERY major MGS release? Well now it's in ALMOST every major MGS release. The codec is gone.

1.) No more camo - You remember that small "active camouflage" mechanic in MGS4? You know, the little mechanic that basically defined the series? Yeah, well that's gone. And not just it, the entire camouflage concept all together.

2.) Inventory - The simple, streamlined inventory that was perfected over generations of MGS' is just gone. Period. The simple HUD inventory that would momentarily paused the game while you accessed it has been replaced with an ultra-generic D-PAD option we've seen in so many other games. It also doesn't pause the game. This is a lot more irritating than you'd think.

3.) Health/Stamina gauges - It turns out that we didn't need these either. MGS has now joined the ranks of health-less, stamina-less, auto-regenerating shooters. How progressive.

4.) Rations/Drugs - Naturally, without a concern for health or energy, we don't really need rations or medications anymore, right? So if you're looking for that fix of Diazepam and a warm can of rations, you've come to the wrong place.

5.) Combat - Among other things, the CQC system we've gotten used to over the years has also been modified with an unusual *MENU* that appears when subduing an enemy in combat. The ability to stick to walls has also been altered.

6.) No more mini-map - This is a bigger deal than it sounds. If you remember, the mini-map showed you the visual field of the enemies in addition to navigating complex areas. Now to access your map it requires going into an entirely different screen.

7.) No Hiding - No more hiding in trash-cans or closets. If you're trying to get away from an enemy your only option is to run.. or lay on your belly.

8.) No easter-eggs - This is a huge one. This is an ENTIRE GAME without any obvious/interesting easter-eggs, funny messages, clever conversations, entertaining posters or weird magazines.

9.) Super-Generic Level - There is only ONE TINY MAP IN THIS ENTIRE GAME. It's a generic, open military base with no buildings, no interesting hiding spots, nothing.

10.) No saving - Autosaves only.

11.) No more money - This means no more Drebin, no more purchasing guns or items and no more upgrading.

12.) No card-board box - What more do I need to say about this one?

I hate to use the word "fanboy," but the people who are saying things like "the negative comments clearly come from people who have never played a metal gear game in there life" [sic] or operating on the "if you don't agree with me you're wrong" -mentality might have a *tiny* bit of bias :).

This game is simply a show-off of mechanics and graphics that will be fully introduced in MGS V: The Phantom Pain and nothing more. The plot content is nothing that couldn't have been put in a few words during the intro of the main game that is about to come. The graphics did not impress me and I hope that MGS V looks better. Photorealism is there though and is very good but character models still look like plastic. The movement is still a bit awkward and NPCs as well Snake move quite quickly without any physical realism.
All the above and the very short duration of this game make me think of the same thing when I was reading the reviews for Ground Zeroes. I believe that Kojima is trying to help Konami stand on its feet before the release of the main game that will surely boost the company financially and to do so, we have this game on the shelves.
I would also like to point out that people should stop criticising each other on how they spend their money on games. Journey was a short game full of brilliance, same with Gone Home and both of them cost a total of 20 pounds. Kojima has already made a name because of his amazing games thus the extra price. I am a fan of Kojima's work and I would even buy a 5 minute demo of his for 10 pounds. If that makes me stupid so be it.
I totally understand the argument that we shouldn't promote a ''high price-low value'' culture in video games but I also strongly believe that this is up to us the gamers to decide. In the end we are the ones who form the market and decide where the market goes, what makes the highest sales and what games we really want. And I believe MGS is a game we still want in the market. If my purchase of Ground Zeroes can help that happen then I'm happy. As a game though, I expected much more.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bought this game expecting another great installment of the Metal Gear series and played through it in under a couple of hours. After watching the several different cut scenes and wondering when there would be another playable section... There wasn't.

In the only main mission offered, you fight through it to get the best time possible and if you actual get caught there is little to no hope of getting a decent time or score. The graphics were amazing, the AI was awesome, and the play style was what you come to expect from these games. The only thing lacking was paying half the price of a brand new game for nothing more than one mission and some side missions.

I suppose that I knew going in that it wasn't going to bed a full game but I still hoped on more than one mission. Maybe half of a real game for half the price?

The one upside was that I cannot wait to play the next game and will have it the day it comes out. That final cut scene makes me want to know more!

So all in all... Great graphics, great story, but not worth the money. 5/10 from me...

    As always, This is Steps

For me while it is not wrong is a lame excuse for lack of content. It was created as prologue to Meal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain. It is the typical good stealth action game that you expect from a Metal Gear Solid title. The presentation is excellent and graphics and sound are also really good. It must make a warning however there is some content here that is unsavory and can make you feel ill. It would not be added if this was made today. Overall an excellent demo but not worth this much money. Play The Phantom Pain instead. I give 5/10 because of the lack of content and would have given 9-10/10 if it had a satisfying amount of it. I just signed up especially to review this game.

First of all, I am a fan of MGS series. I didn't play all the games, but really excited to know that MGS V is about to release. So you can imagine my (and not only mine) surprise when I saw THAT. People can call this by different names, but definitely it cannot be called the GAME. But now I don't want to speak about how short this game.

But now I don't want to speak about how short this game. I don't want to tell again and again how unfair to pay $40 for THIS prologue/demo. Something happened to the game creators at the world, unfortunately including these gigantic game producers like Hideo Kojima. They, for some reason, began to lose. Something what they have earned by hard-work, something what can not be returned by simple ways - their REPUTATION. And if KONAMI allows itself to publish the game in state like this, so we, the gamers, can understand just one thing - it's not about the reputation, unfortunately it's all about the money...
Let's leave that behind. There is still some technical/game problem that make the game even worse:
    1) When you move the weapon sight from side to side, sometimes the sight just jump to the left or to the right or you see TWO sights together until you don't even know where you gonna shoot.
    2) Have you ever seen in some game that your suppressor can worn out??? Oh, yeah. In this game you can hear something like this :" Now your suppressor worn out, so think before your shoot". Any logic???
    3) Map - reaaalllyy could be better.
    4) HUGE FPS drop when you inside the tank and using fps mode.

Well,of course there is many positive things like AMAZING graphics, incredible sound and spectacular actors playing, but anyway, there is some smell of "we payed for the demo and this is f...ed it up"...

The meat of Ground Zeroes is the main mission, where Big Boss rescues the two POW's , Chico and Paz... that's really all the story material that Ground Zeroes offers. To be fair, it take a while on your first play through, you're killing guards, sneaking past searchlights and all that good stuff, so it will take you a good hour on your first play through, but if you really wanted you could beat this demo in 5 minutes. However, if you're a long-time Metal Gear Solid fan, then you have paid more than 30$ for less of a demo. you all remember Zone Of The Enders, we all know you only bought it for the Metal Gear Solid 2 Demo, you're not fooling anyone. The graphics in Ground Zeroes are absolutely amazing, filling every little nook and cranny with as much detail as possible, the Fox Engine is absolutely incredible. The gameplay is even better, aim and fire weapons with the left and right triggers, use the D-Pad to select items and RB to use your binoculars that allow you to mark enemies. everything runs at a buttery smooth 60 FPS. there is a new reflex mode that, if you get spotted, throws the game into slow motion, giving you a couple of seconds to take out the guy who spotted you. I personally don't think you should buy this game, just go on Wikipedia if you want to know the story, and if you're totally desperate to play it, rent the game, or split the money with you're friend, then use it as a drink coaster while you play the full fledged Phantom Pain. But this was not even worth the money. The graphics obviously seemed pretty good, but for such a famous franchise, and to be on next gen, it just looked so rushed it's like they didn't even care.

However, it's a pleasure to play this, and after completing the mission, you'll want to know what happens

I'm aware that some people have done speed runs of it in less than 10 minutes but then again, I've seen 100 hour games such as Skyrim beaten in 1 hour! There are multiple side ops and cassette tapes, character info for you to be informed of characters and there are multiple difficulties for you to be playing for months on end if you were dedicated enough. However i will not defend this game in any way as it claimed me as well as millions of other loyal Kojima die-hard fans as part of the insensitive and opportunistic Konami capitalist hierarchy as nothing more but an expendable customer to be given the middle finger. It is not worth a full analyses as it is not a game. There are certainly good aspects of this "thing" such as its stealth and mature themes and story but to be honest, these aspects are expanded upon and perfected in the sequel which takes hours upon hours to complete for anyone.

This game is not worth your money in any aspect (even for renting it) as you might as well watch a playthorugh of it or even better, buy the sequel if you want.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MGS GZ is not a game it is not a demo either, it is like a opening to a superhero show where the hero beats up other small time villains before getting to the main bad guy (skull face). There is no reason to buy this unless you are a hardcore MGS fan. There is no story here, you break into a base and you pick up Paz and Chico. You figure out Paz has a bomb and she dies jumping out of the chopper to save big boss' life. Then the credits roll. The overall gameplay is stellar, the stealth aspects of the game are incredible and the game is a marvel to look at (unless you look very closely at the walls and floors). The main mission can be beaten in a span of 10 minutes and the side missions are boring. All you do is rescue another guy or kill two guys or blow up some turrets. You have to collect various XOF patches to unlock the last two missions and it just feels like padding. This game is worth 5 dollars no more. While I am confident that the phantom pain will be an amazing game that will blow minds. However stay away from this title or wait until a price drop. Expand

I'd like to preface this review by saying I am a HUGE Metal Gear Solid fan. My first experience with Metal Gear Solid was at the tail end of the 90's where I played a demo of MGS on PlayStation. I was fairly young and didn't fully understand it, but ended up picking up a used copy for $20. That is where my love for the series began.

Fast forward to 2014. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes releases, a good excuse to bust out the PS4 that had otherwise been gathering dust and get waist deep in the newest iteration of my favourite gaming series. Alas, there was barely enough to submerge my ankles. Ground Zeroes is to video games what a paddling pool is to an Olympic swimmer. You can't swim in that, heck, you could hardly get wet in that! My first playthrough of Ground Zeroes lasted me 46 minutes. 46 minutes for the whole campaign. A campaign that consisted of neutered stealth mechanics, a shocking Kiefer Sutherland performance, regenerating health, removal of key parts of the series such as the Codec, Cardboard Boxes and Wall-Knocking and a multitude of other reasons why Ground Zeroes was disappointing.

Back at the launch of the PS2, a demo for Metal Gear Solid 2 was released which was considered to be one of the best demos ever made for a video game. A first time player could have spent an hour on this demo, and it cost nothing (except that it came with a copy of Zone of the Enders, which to be fair was a great game anyway). My playthrough of Ground Zeroes took 46 minutes and cost me almost $50.

I think the worst thing is that there are people defending this in droves. This isn't a matter of opinion - if you defend such daylight robbery, you're wrong. End of story. This game, regardless of what you think of it is an enormous ripoff. The extra missions? Please. Each one can be completed in 15 minutes and there's only 5 of them. Not to mention they're set in the exact same area as the campaign, which would struggle to break a square kilometre.

Summary is, the game sets a bad precedent. If other companies catch on, paying this much for 1 hour long demos could be come the norm - and as if companies like Activision charging $130 and up for Standard Edition Call of Duty copypastes wasn't bad enough! (NZ Prices, shocking I know) The sad thing is: They STILL have more gameplay per dollar than Ground Zeroes! The price aside, the game still manages to set a bad precedent, this time for the series. Removing key elements, reflex mode, cut-down stealth... As a huge MGS fan, this game makes me sick to my stomach. I didn't like MGS4 all that much either for lots of different reasons. but this is on a whole other level. Rent this out, at worst it'll cost you $8 and you'll finish it in an hour or two. Don't buy it. Don't support this kind of money-grubbing. Don't support anybody that thinks this is acceptable. The future of gaming might just depend on it.

Even if its kinda good , you shouldnt support a 1 hour 20 mins game for 30 dollars if you still have some hope for the gaming in the future , even when the game is exciting for the hour you take to finish it , that cost is an insult when it could be even 5 dollars or included as a demo for the phantom pain

This game looks *nice*, but it is by no means a PERFECT SCORE kind of impressive, even if you were to ignore the fact that it's a 30 dollar demo. The environment lacked almost anything in the way of impressive detail, and the story had the charm of a bad translation to an off-brand JRPG.

I'm embarrassed for Konami just as much as I am angry at them. Everything about this screams shameless greed, and claiming that this couldn't exist as a prologue within Phantom Pain is an affront to the intellect of all Konami's customers.

Yes, the plot is very non-existent and sometimes brainless. The only thing that really supports the game is again, the gameplay. Though the voice acting and graphics may look good, the gameplay is where it's at. But like I said, you won't enjoy the gameplay for long. I beat the main mission in about an hour and the extras didn't really catch my full attention for me to want to finish. Ground Zeros is not worth full price but if you can get it on sale for under $10 or you can borrow it from a friend, you may want to go for it just to experience the solid gameplay. But do not get it at full price, you will be disappointed. Yes, the game is very disappointing.

This game has none of what makes MGS great, the campaign can be cleared in about 40 minutes give or take, almost no story, regenerative health and not a single boss fight.

The enemy AI in general is pretty piss poor. You can kill a guy from far away, another one will run up to that exact spot and start shooting at you, you can easily kill him (the enemies don't take cover usually), and then do that to the next guy, and the next, and the next, you can basically keep doing that until you run out of bullets.

Once you are out, you can just hang of a ledge somewhere for an infinite amount of time and the enemies will NEVER find you as long as you are not in their direct line of sight, and if they DO find you, don't worry, it's very hard to die in this game now because they replaced normal health with regenerative health, you can now go full Rambo on your opponents, and then just hide in a corner for 30 seconds when the screen turns read. You can also tag enemies and see them through walls for some reason.

All in all this is a demo, and a poor demo at that. It's short, it's small, and it costs $30, you'd be better off buying a game like Dishonored or any of the Splinter Cell games, basically anything you haven't played yet, I guarantee that you'll have a better experience with it than Ground Zeroes.

All the fun and interesting features of Metal Gear stealth have all been stripped away. The stealth boils down to spamming tranquillizer darts into enemies. Sneaking has become a joke, it's all about trial and error now. The enemies have a ridiculous line of sight and unlike past Metal Gear games where you can always find places to hide or find ways to conceal yourself, in this game the most you can do to conceal yourself is hide behind walls.

Because actually attempting to stealth requires you to restart the game over and over, you'll have a great time constantly skipping the same cutscenes and running back and forth between the cliffs saving prisoners. Eventually you'll be able to beat the stealth, but only after you have memorised the location of every single enemy in every single area and where they move around.

If you don't care about the stealth though, don't get your hopes up. The enemy AI is stupid. Even MGS1 had better AI combat than this. You can literally hide in some small building and just kill the AI while occasionally waiting for your health to regenerate when you get hit. I was able to kill about 500 soldiers just camping in one spot.

Oh and the story itself is a total ripoff. you get about 30 mins worth of cutscenes including the credits. There is only one level, camp omega. every mission takes place in this one level. The main mission takes about as long as the tanker chapter in MGS2, The tanker had at least 40 mins of cutscenes though, and it had a boss. There is no boss fight in GZ though.

The controls seem to have taken a step back from MGS4 and the camera is absolutely awful. Often you'll have an awkward camera placement where you can't see a thing. The cqc has also become overly complicated, most of the actions are based around doing certain combinations while mashing the button or holding it. The old cqc was a lot simpler in my opinion.

The radio chatter in the game is extremely annoying. Miller gives you completely useless information such as "press X to crawl" or "tranquilizers put enemies to sleep". He never has anything interesting to say, no entertaining codec calls. In the cutscenes too, he doesn't sound very emotional. Keither and everyone else manages to deliver an excellent performance.

As short as it is, overall I'd say it has a good story and some of the best graphics I've seen for a console game. But the gameplay itself is too frustrating and tedious, especially the part where you have to carry the prisoners to the chopper. Successfully stealthing shouldn't boil down to trial and error. This game is a massive low point in the series and the quality has dropped significantly. I hope that things are drastically improved for the Phantom Pain.

Metal Gear used to be different and for the first time while i am playing a new metal gear i miss the old ones. it felt more like a demo rather than a game. It didn't get me excited to continue the story when Phantom Pain is released. I think Konami was out of options when it comes to the storyline since solid snake story seems finished and reached a dead end.

Of course that is why this game is out to help us with the open stealth style of gameplay. There is sadly a lack of the CODEC system which is kinda sad for a fan of this game since the original MGS. The graphics are great and the options for infiltrating the camp are pretty varied. There are collectables and some bonus missions to keep you playing for another hour and a half or so. But that is a problem in its own. The game is extremely short, even my sister who is not the best gamer out there beat the first mission in two hours and twelve minutes. In total it took her about four and a half hours to beat the game. It took me about three. So to sum up the positives are graphics, fun, and makes me really want the Phantom Pain. The negatives are animations on running, controls feel a little stiff, lack of content for price, and no CODEC. Also as a side note oddly enough when interrogating enemies Big Bosses voice is audio but the answer the enemy your interrogating is just text at the bottom of the screen. I got this game at just 15.99 American dollars which is better then the thirty some paid but still not as good as Dead Rising: Case Zero which was only five dollars and took me about an hour or two more than this game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hearing Sutherlands voice coming out of Snake's mouth is infuriating. While there is an excuse for this in Phantom Pain, it doesn't fly here. Kojima used the same Japanese voice actor consistently. Perhaps this a cultural difference, but he didn't understand how english speaking audiences associate the character with the voice actor. Additionally Snake doesn't behave like Big Boss, but rather a selfish Sutherland who's creative input is to 'seem cool' not by acting cool, but by making other characters idiotic. The idea that anyone would follow this man is ludicrous.

If you don't care about any of that - MGS has the best stealth gameplay of all time, hands down, & this is an excellent demo for The Phantom Pain.

I have played ALL Metal Gear games. I have been a fan of the series since the first MGS.

This is a demo. There's no way this is any kind of a prologue since the entire story is already in trailers.. NOTHING new is really revealed at all.

This really is the equivalent of the MGS demo that came out in '98 but you are paying $30 for it with some extras on the side.

This isn't even the equivalent of the VR Missions expansion.

I would have expected this from a developer that pumps out CoD games, or from EA or some other swindling company.

I'm incredibly disappointed this has come from Konami/Kojima Productions. This should have been $10 at best.

Extras and side ops are just that.. extras. You play ANY game way above the usual amount of playtime you'll get out of it. Indeed I have replayed MGS games countless times now, but when it boils down to it.. at a MINIMUM you should get an hour of actual game for every $10.

This has not happened, we have payed $20 or $30 for 1 hour 30 mins at best.. they originally wanted $40 for this game.

I really wanted to justify this purchase but ultimately I can't. People are saying 'oh but extras, oh but replayability'. It's not a valid point.. I can replay ANY game as much as I want.. most other games have extras or side missions.

Rent this game.. the Phantom Pain will be out early next year anyway.

It's irrelevant how great the gameplay is, the music, the graphics or anything else.

In actual fact I'm quite pissed off that they ditched the inventory system, we now have regen health, there's no codec (super lame), David Hayter is MIA (although I believe this is basically a troll by Kojima), Miller's VA is awful and we badly need Cam Clarke back in the mix if possible. Cool gadgets and stuff are all but gone. No more personal radar.

It's ditched a lot of things that make Metal Gear a Metal Gear game. It's hard to believe Kojima expected no backlash for this game.

Objectively this is a game that's terrible value, but has really great content, but is a terrible Metal Gear game.

It will please people who have no sense of value and who have never played a Metal Gear or stealth game before.

Which is exactly what it's done.. appealed to the lowest common denominator.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Previously I was a huge Metal Gear fan. I loved it. The reason I bought a PS2 and PS3. However, last generation showed how far behind Japan is in terms of game design and technology, unfortunately. MGS4 continued with the same structure as previous games, which was great during the PS2 era but felt outdated on PS3.

With that said, I'm glad that Ground Zeroes shows some real progress in terms of gameplay and design. Controls are tighter, animations are fluid and very contextual. However, it is still a bit behind in a lot of areas. Enemy AI is not the best. If you are spotted you could just run away a little bit, hide in a vent or similar and wait until the alert is over. Next time you could try your same tactic again as everything will be reset.

There's another ridiculous thing with the AI. If you kill a few guards during an alert, while other guards are there, they can cause a new search after the alert is over -- IF the same guards that saw you shoot them right in front of their noses pass by after the alert phase is over. This is just frustrating and unrealistic and halts gameplay a lot.

Technology-wise it feels like an upgraded version of last generation. The fox engine is definitely not very impressive as a next gen engine. There's aliasing, no subsurface scattering, reflections rely highly on fake specular lighting, rather than reflection maps and so on. Look at the cars for example and compare them to Infamous: Second Son and you'll see what I mean.

Another point to make is regarding cut scenes. I was not only surprised, but baffled, when I saw the last cutscene. There was barely any dialog but there was loads of action. A general rule of thumb nowdays is to keep all action in the players hands. If a game has a blockbuster type action sequence, there are usually scripted events where buildings fall and lots of chaos, but you still control the player. See the fire sequence in Tomb Raider or the building collapse in Uncharted 2 for reference.

All in all, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is definitely a step forward. The gameplay definitely feels solid but they need to look over the AI a little bit. The game looks nice, but could use a few upgrades in a lot of areas. In the end, it is fun though and definitely something a fan of previous games would appreciate.

Would I recommend buying this game? That is a strong NO. This is nothing but a longer demo with very little substance for a single player game. Barely any story and the main mission is very short. Sure there are some side missions, and honestly they are hard to distinguish considering there is about as much (or rather, as little) story surrounding these as the main plot. But even considering these, the game is way to short and offers far too little for the asking price. I would recommend it at 10$ but at nearly triple it just feels like they are ripping people off.

Sad to see such a strong brand name as Metal Gear being diluted so much. Konami and Kojima should hire better to manage their product portfolio before they really destroy the Metal Gear brand completely. They should re-invent, simplify and focus their efforts more. Not release spin offs and demos to milk every penny possible while they can.

I would give this game the normal review that I usually do, but I don't think there's enough content to make a proper judgement. I'm lucky I got this game for free as a monthly PS-Plus game, because I would be feeling very ripped off if I purchased this game

It takes about 50 minutes to beat the game. It's literally shorter than Snipperclips cut in half. The 50 minutes of gametime are fun, which is why I'm giving it 3 points.

3/10. Pathetic. Not worth your time. Do not buy this game.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes[a] is a 2014 action-adventure stealth video game developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami.

    - It's more like a demo

This is demo and only make sense when free and if you're fun of the series. DO NOT pay a penny for it, as it worth nothing. I would really ask Sony publisher what they were thinking when releasing this kind of tech previews as a full game to be sold even at half price of real games.

Unbelievable. I just wasted $30 in a demo. A one map single player game demo. This is a scam. Over the years I played a lot o demos, that I could download for free from the web and that provided a lot more content. Like many, the hype took me over. The issue simply is that this is a SCAM. I don't know what to say really. Imagine buying a ticket to see a movie, and that the movie lasts only 15 minutes. In those 15 minutes, acting is great, visuals are great, but .... ITS a 15 minutes MOVIE. And worst, It doesn't even "feel" like a complete story. Ground Zeroes is just an episode of a TV show. But you know how much an episode costs? $3 at most. A full season $40. Expand

I've ever been a massive fan of the MetalGear series. I don't like the overly long cut scenes and ridiculously bad plot and characters, but I thought I'd give this a go. Luckily I didn't pay for it as it was free on PS+ this month. Playing made me wonder why this demo wasn't free to start with.

As a kid you would get demo discs on the front of magazines with one level from a game/s on

As a kid you would get demo discs on the front of magazines with one level from a game/s on the disk so you get an idea of what the game was like. I really miss those days as it was so fun going through 20 demos in a night finding out first hand which games were worth buying in full. Now we are insulted by having to pay for a single level just to get taster of the game.

Like I said, luckily I dint pay for it. The graphics, although very nice (technically) don't do anything for me because the setting, characters and scenery are so dull. Seen it all before. Military base, buildings, concrete, jeep, barrels, yawn. There's nothing new or mildly interesting to make the graphics stand out.

Gameplay is very weak, like a poor mans version of the now very outdated Splinter Cell. Controls are bad, weapons have less damage than pellet guns and enemy AI is either extremely stupid or knows exactly where you are? It makes no sense. Snake's movements are clunky and fiddly reminding me of the early Resident Evil games.

Snake as a character is laughable. Based on Kurt Russell in Escape from New York means I cant ever take him seriously as the film was so bad. The story is non existent and the map is small with little to actually do.

I cant recommend this game to anyone apart from Metal Gear fanboys who clearly get something I don't.

This game took me 25 minutes to complete. Their is screen-tearing and framerate drops on my PS4. Do not, whatever you do, support Konami and Sony in their attempts to make it acceptable to make people pay $30 for a demo. Granted, what there is of the game is pretty good.

The graphics and game play are not bad. I have experienced better mechanics in other games though, The real let down is the content and length. So you sneak into a prison, rescue Paz. Then you sneak over to some cages and free the kid and take them to be extracted story over. WTF. I have honestly played longer demos of games. Really short, and there is no real reason to buy this. It's basically a demo for the real game, if you bought this and liked it I recommend you trying the real game.

It's a very bad game. I never would have bought it with my money. Terrible gameplay, strange shooting, unremarkable graphics. Whether the story even longer, she would not have been better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are too many games (and also the real world out there) for me to play the same game again after finishing it. I might make one exception for "Black flag" but this MGS-game is definitely not one I want to play again to find another tunnel or some item in a hidden backroom.
It was extremely short and imho a huge waste of money.
    (Spoiler alert)
And the ending was not exactly rewarding either.

Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes (2/10 Discount Hitman): Ground Zeroes is an extremely short prequel to Metal Gear Solid 5. While the actual gameplay is fine, everything else is extremely lacking. The entire game consists of one level with multiple selectable mission objectives. The primary story mission involves rescuing two targets from confinement and extracting them via helicopter. The game is a demo, don't buy it! The game play is alright but paying $30 for 4 hours is a ripoff and I have severe buyers remorse. I hope if you're reading this you don't make the mistake of buying it and instead wait to buy it used for $10 in a few days.

$40 for an hour worth of gameplay is bullsh*t. Simply put. If it wasn't the sacred MGS franchise, this game would be getting drilled into the ground. Your basically paying for a demo.

It's a good game, truly is.
But at a certain point, being a good game is not enough to worth it. By doing this offer, Kojima just confirmed for everyone that his opinion of himself is beyond anything we can imagine, he is just falling into the worse kind of pretention that a creator can have.
This "piece of work" definitely not worth its price, to me, it's disrespectful to the customer

There might be an interesting game in this engine, but it’s not here, not yet, and as a result Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is at best a very expensive demo that should only be approached with the lowest expectations.
