It feels a little less MGS and a little more Splinter Cell though. We all know the game is short but it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that has looked up this game before purchasing it though. There is a fair amount of time you can spend with this game doing missions on Hard, collecting everything (XOF patches and cassette tapes) and completing specific challenges such as "Spot every enemy in the shortest amount of time" which does add some hours of replay.
There is a funny Easter Egg which I won't spoil at the end of one of the side missions if you get an "S" ranking and it is classic Kojima. The thing I missed the most from MGS4 was the active camo, or any camo for that matter. It's just a rubber suit? Hopefully the Phantom Pain will address this and give us more than a cutscene at the beginning and one at the end.
The only reason I'm not giving this game a 9 or 10 is not because of the length of the game... I knew it was short before I purchased it, but the price for the length. 30$ is 15$ too much. There are a few noticable clippings in the game such as when you're carrying somebody over your shoulders your arm tends to reach through their body and even though it's an "open world" it is very clear how the devs want you to play through the game... with a stun gun and on your belly. I enjoyed the game and you will to, but just know you're getting 15$ ripped off.

Just a little mention to the ost. It has just a few tracks, but very good! Here's to you is AWESOME, even if it isn't a song made for the game, but in that circumstances it was played, it was perfect.

I'd recommend this game only if you find it under €15/$15, because in an hour you'll finish it.

People cry about the length, HOWEVER I promise they haven't beaten all the side missions, and haven't collected all of the patches to unlock the final mission, and are most likely NOT playing on hard. That is where the challenge is, and no doubt its short, but its 30$ and you you are not forced to buy it lol, the game did what they wanted it to for me, I CANT WAIT FOR PHANTOM PAIN

Short and sweet. I got the game because I was sure I could find a million things to do differently despite how short it was. I was right. The gameplay alone will have me hooked long enough to justify the purchase. If I had went by reviews, I would have skipped it. Rent or buy, you could do worse when it comes to playing this game.

Despite the length, Metal Gear Solid fans will vastly enjoy this game. I did. I will be replaying this game for a long time. If you don't like the game because of the length.. that is your choice. I know, as a fan of MGS, that i enjoy sneaking around with Big Boss. Bring on TPP.

to determine whether or not this purchase is for you, you need to ask yourself one simple question... how much of metal gear fan am I? If you have been playing MGS since its inception buying this is an absolute given and will no doubt be worth $20-30. If however you are not the most hardcore of an MGS fan avoid this purchase like the bubonic plaque and simply wait for the Phantom Pain.to determine whether or not this purchase is for you, you need to ask yourself one simple question... how much of metal gear fan am I? As for the game itself MGS Ground Zeroes picks up almost immediately after the events of peace walker and involves Naked Snake (AKA Big Boss) infiltrating a US blacksite known as Camp omega, a deliberate and shameless analogy to Guantanamo bay.the short but oh so sweet story is definitely among the most dark of the entire series, Kojima mainly explores themes of torture and loss as well as rape...Kojima certainly wasn't lying when he said that MGSV would explore taboo subject matters.

the gameplay is undoubtedly the best the series has ever seen, Big Boss moves with fluidity and it both looks and feels awesome. the emission of the HUD greatly augments the games immersion, and random enemy movement patterns keep you on the edge of your seat constantly. Enemy AI is also greatly increased, the day time missions can be incredibly difficult as enemies can spot you with ease, the evolution of enemy AI in my opinion validates the new reflex mode although if you're up for a real challenge it can be switched off. during combat enemies act much more naturally than previous titles, they charge flank and take cover on the harder difficulties they are indeed a force to be reckoned with

overall MGS Ground Zeroes is a welcome addition to the collections of longtime dedicated fans, otherwise consider a rent, a borrow, a wait for a sale, or an overall pass

And even it's a ahortly history, i was schocked when i see Mother Base destroyed, the Miller reaction and all the Paz thing was simply perfect.

Truthfully, I'm not surprised- after having played Ground Zeroes, that it disappointed many fans and even some newcomers to the series. I think newcomers especially expected something truly engrossing and phenomenal, and they simply didn't get that. Fans of course expected an overarching, huge experience- and they didn't get that either. However, what Ground Zeroes does deliver on is excellent, polished gameplay and mechanics, thrilling new tweaks and special, well-thought out additions to stealth action (see reflex mode, a mode giving you precious seconds of reaction when suddenly spotted), and skipping the traditional codex screens in favor of on-the-fly commentary from Kaz (with a simple button press). I'll leave it up to you whether or not you deem this game worthwhile to place, based on what information I've provided you and attempted to explain in the easiest possible way without fear of spoilers. Despite the short showing here, I definitely think that everything (mechanics-wise) here and an added progression system and beefed up story could really make Phantom Pain a phenomenal, polished title.

While sadly the special pre-order and console specific content limits you in which version of the game you choose to buy, if you have the opportunity I heartily recommend either of the next generation consoles as the way to go- obviously the look and perform the best of all of the versions of the game, due of course to hardware advances. Whether or not you choose a Sony touted console though or a Microsoft one further complicates matters, as each offers a different additionally packaged mission. However, as neither of these missions is really anything special, you can feel free to choose relatively without fear, which version you'd like to buy if you have both or all systems. What a lucky person you'd be if that were your only dilemma whilst thinking of purchasing the game... Anyway, I guess it's time to move on to our final segment here.

Concept: Provide a prologue to the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V and showcase the new darker, grittier world that Boss Snake and his compatriots inhabit, as well as a flashy next-generation engine and some innovations in the classic gameplay. What it doesn't mention however is the shameful content versus price index on the box, however that can be tackled as you see fit- either with torches and pitchforks outside Kojima's office or hope for the full-length game soon coming.

Graphics: There's no question that this is a next generation title and boasts a very impressive and detailed, strong engine in Konami's Fox engine, as Ground Zeroes looks and plays mighty fine and smoothly throughout.

Sound: The ambient noise and the low-key soundtrack of accompanying bowings and chords meshes well with the stealth and surprise encounters Boss finds himself in, but are easily overshadowed by a fantastic (if new) performance by Kiefer Sutherland- who has since replaced Daid Hayter as the voice of Snake, at least for the time being. Personally, I think both men have excellent talent in voice acting, so I wasn't terribly torn when I heard someone new was voicing the character, weird a time as it was.

Playability: There are the occasional hiccups when you're getting used to the control scheme, but aside from initial issues, the controls and the encounters they save your life in mesh perfectly and run smoothly and well for the duration of the game. No matter how hectic the gameplay gets, I constantly found myself able to get out of sticky situations so long as I knew the correct buttons to press and the limits to which I could push the Boss.

Entertainment: Now, this is going to be the sticker right here. What content there is proves to be highly entertaining, as short on story and time consumption as that is. However, I just can't get past the fact that there isn't enough to go around, meaning for all its solid mechanics and things Ground Zeroes does correctly, this section takes the hardest hit to the score. It could've been a lot worse, and I've been very kind with my score, but even I can't overlook this.

    Replay Value: Moderate.

    Overall Score: 8.0

Luckily it has many kinds of missions you unlock after beating the game and you unlock more of them as you play through them, so you can't just judge the games length based on only the main mission length.

    I reduced 2 points because of the price and shortness. Otherwise the game deserves something between 9 and 10;
    - visuals are perfect
    - sounds are good even though I'm not entirely sure if Snakes new voice is better than before
    - gameplay is better than before. There are new moves and things you can do. I can only complain about not being able to select hard difficulty from start. Playing on normal requires no sneaking as its that easy.
    - and last the mission area is big enough for the missions

Graphically, this game looks absolutely fantastic. The cinematics and general in-game effects are brilliant for what is an early game in the current generation. The atmosphere unfortunately lacks tension thanks to the typically shoddy AI that has become a part of MGS over the years. You begin overlooking a military base and have two hostages to rescue; it's really that simple. The base is fairly large; not quite Groznyj Grad from Snake Eater but there's lots to do and explore. It's not linear and there are many ways you can approach situations. Once again the AI doesn't do itself many favours and some scenarios can be worked around with ease but if you want to score high; taking care and planning your moves by tagging enemies takes some skill to execute perfectly. The controls and the combat are pretty much as expected from past games and the touchpad is also introduced for a couple of functions.

The main problem with this game is largely the length of the story but another couple of issues that seem to strike me based on past games is the lame scripting, weak characters and awful voice acting. These were the pinnacle positives of past games. Getting used of Keifer Sutherland as opposed to David Hayter wont take long to adjust but there didn't seem to be any really dramatic or intriguing characters. A couple of them sound like the actors were reading their lines with a cactus pointed precariously close to their colon. The dialogue isn't as gripping as I would have hoped for a MGS V introduction and the characters don't seem memorable or powerful at all. The ending is a major let down too and doesn't really set up The Phantom Pain in a blaze of glory.

After you've experienced the main story; you can try the Side Ops missions. These take place on the same military base but each one involves different objectives such as hostage rescue or disarming anti-air missiles on the ground. This add a bit more to the package and along with the Ground Zeroes mission; they offer multiple play-through opportunities to improve leaderboard scores and the chance to change your play style. There is no meat to the stories in these operations but they are fun nevertheless.

Overall, MGS V: GZ is a worthy purchase for hardcore fans of the classic series. It's a decent introduction to the exciting prospect of The Phantom Pain but the length of the game and lack of a thrilling story may make people feel a bit stitched up for their hard earned cash. Chasing 100% completion and earning trophies is the real challenge here but this game wont last until the main product is on the shelves. Highly recommended but a hefty price to pay for what is no more than an extended demo and training mode.

The graphics, mechanics, the AI of the enemy is just GREAT. The agony of waiting for new Metal Gear content is finally over.

The prologue to last summer’s reveal of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was released recently, along with some controversy to its price and length.

Taking a similar approach to Sony with Gran Turismo 5, Konami and the team over at Kojima productions have previewed the latest entry in the Metal Gear franchise with Ground Zeroes.

Snake’s most recent operation has him infiltrating a military base in Cuba to rescue two captured Militaires Sans Frontières agents. The game does a good job of setting up what will take place in The Phantom Pain, as well as recapping the events of Metal Gear Solid 3 and Peacewalker (so if you haven’t played them, their endings are spoiled).

Along with the Ground Zeroes main mission, there are other assignments Snake can undertake. They are all centered around the same base, but the time of day, weather, and objectives change. These objectives range from taking out anti-aircraft guns, to document recovery.

With the main campaign and side missions, I found there’s about 10 or so hours of gameplay. There is even more content if you attempt to take the game really stealthily and go for A ratings on missions.

While I did very much enjoy the game, I would qualify it as a big demo that will do a lot for fans of the series, but newcomers will find that their 30 dollars may be better spent elsewhere. The game, like the others before, is fairly presumptuous. It assumes that you are familiar with what’s going on in the story.

As for the actual game, I really enjoyed my time with it. Ground Zeroes’ missions take me back to the first levels of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, and I thought it played very similarly to the Splinter Cell games, which I was a big fan of.

I found Ground Zeroes a lot more user-friendly than previous Metal Gear installments. The clunky UI has been streamlined, the previously broken L/R menus are a thing of the past, and the D-Pad functions as a faux clickwheel. This was much easier to use. It performed smoothly in the heat of combat and allowed for a better experience.

The UI has changed, but the combat and stealth options seemed more akin to the Metal Gear most will be used too. Your silencer will degrade as you fire the weapon its attached to, and Snake has his trusty tranquilizer gun as well. As with the other Metal Gear Solid games, it’s still up to you to find grenades and stronger weapons.

The game makes the player want to stick to the shadows, hide from guards, and take precise shots to avoid raising and alarm.

The stellar graphics and physics are powered by the Fox Engine, which can handle the most supreme details, and really add to cinematic experience that Kojima so loves to deliver. I never thought that the detail of rain on Snakes op’s suit would be a point of interest in a game. The game looks great and the Fox Engine helps with shadow and light physics, which adds depth to the stealth sections of the game.

There were little graphical or gameplay errors, but my game experience, overall, was pretty well polished and I have no real complaints. I was glad to see that, along with solid story telling, that the game was very playable too.

I enjoyed my time with Ground Zeros, and am still going back to finish the side missions. The game did a great job of getting you ready and excited for whats to come in The Phantom Pain. Sadly, we don’t yet have a release date for Phantom Pain, so this will just have to hold us over until then. I hope it will be holiday season, 2015, but, with E3 and TGS still to come, hopefully we will learn when we can have the full experience.

    Final Thoughts

Gameplay: A more user friendly UI brings Ground Zeros into the realm of modern shooters, making for a more enjoyable experience. A well designed Fox Engine provides a smooth and tactical approach to level design and controls.

Appearance: With stunning visuals and excellent camera work, Ground Zeroes has a great combination of cinematic flair, while keeping the gameplay looking just as great at all times. Shadows, character models, and even weather affects all look amazing.

Sound: Borrowing from the legendary James Bond films, Kojima and Co. provide unforgettable opening cinematics. Be it with original themes, or music from popular culture. Credit must be given to Fox Team for taking such a grand approach to opening titles. While in-game, combat and in the field operations are those of the best spy thriller films. While the game’s dialogue is among some of the best story telling in video games.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a title that will ultimately be judged less on it's own merits and more on the value of money spent and hours played. This is unfair to the title as practically every other game gets a pass in this same department, (Resogun can be completed in 40 minutes, The Bouncer is around the same time, and both carry a 7.5+ user rating) while MGSV:GZ gets judged on this fact alone. I will provide an honest review, while I am a huge fan of the Metal Gear saga, it will not affect my decision here.

One major thing that Kojima did right was holding on to the unique Metal Gear art style even with the changing of generations, the old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" hold true here and I hope they continue to understand this fact. Graphically the game is alarmingly beautiful on both the PS4 and XBO, neither next gen version of the game looks terrible and the best way to describe it is the XBO version looks amazing, while the PS4 version looks better than that being slightly sharper. While the graphics are in almost every way better than anything we have seen in this new generation, I was blown away at how great hair looks in this game. While the hair impressed me the rest of the game is quite gorgeous through and through with luscious lighting, spectacular shadows, and tantalizing textures.

The game plays extremely smooth, thanks in large part to running at 60 frames per second. This adds a certain level of detail to Big Boss's signature CQC that we haven't seen due to the limitations of the previous games. In many ways this game finally makes Big Boss feel like The Legendary Soldier/Mercenary the game has been proclaiming him to be all these years, giving him full mobility that put MGSV:GZ on par with gaming's best third person shooters. (While this has no bearing on my review score, I can't wait to see how well this works with the new Metal Gear Online)

Unless you have been leaving under a cardboard box (see what I did there) you have heard about the short campaign. I can confirm that the game can be completed in as little at 10-15 minutes and as long as 3-4 hours depending on your play style. The replay-ability of the game is quite vast, I can easily see myself putting 12+ hours in this game playing the scenario out differently each time to find the approach I like best. The two exclusive missions add some benefit, but it really isn't much. I do prefer the "Jamais Vu" mission as it feels like something more than just a reskin, but the "Déjà Vu" mission was a great throwback to the old MGS demo we got with OPM in 1998.

The amount of negative reviews is alarming and unwarranted in the case of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. People constantly use the excuse that you are paying for a demo! The likely hood is these are the same people who bought and never played ZoE ($49.99) for the MGS2 Demo, bought ZoE HD ($39.99) for the MGR:R demo, Buying Crackdown ($59.99) for Halo 3 beta, Buying God of War: Ascension ($59.99) for The Last of Us demo. The entitlement by people giving this game 0-5 is beyond all reason. This game is a 6 on graphics alone and then an extra point or so for the content it provides, Technically this game is a 7.5/10, due to the lack of 1/2 a point I am rating it an 8.

The infinite ammo helicopter run was my least favorite for obvious reasons.

As for the "new-gen showcase" it looks really good on those systems, but it definitely shines on ps3/x360 with how well they took advantage of the hardware.

Finally, the replayability factor. Lots of games have this, along with online leaderboards, and a much longer campaign. Not sure how that became the linchpin counter-argument to justify the price of GZ but hey, everyone should spend their money however they see fit. Lets just say I love replaying missions and leaderboards, but this game didnt make me want to do either....it just felt too shallow.

If i go to the movies, i don't complain that i paid the same price for a 90 minute masterpiece than a 2 and a half hour borefest.

That's the case with Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. Yes, the main mission (NOT the whole game) is very short. Also, the ending is disappointing and unfulfilling. However, those are the only two flaws in a game that has some of the best stealth mechanics

Also, contrary to what people say, if you are one of those people that likes to get 100% in games, then you get a bang for your buck here. The missions are varied and getting the best rating demands a lot of replays.

So yeah, i liked this game. I can assure you, if this was a $15 downloadable game, everyone would be giving it 10's.

A lot of series will try to reboot by adding things that don't mix well with previous concepts, or adding new features that are cheesy or worthless. Metal Gear Ground Zeroes seems like a very organic and natural progression of its predecessors and I love it so far.

Don't complain about a 30 dollar game. Seriously. We get 60 dollar games that last 5-6 hours with horrible storylines, bad graphics, etc. This 30 dollar game is top notch and just a taste of what's to come.

Excellent graphics, the lighting and rain look amazing, seriously one of the best looking titles i have played so far on the ps4. The controls feel alot more fluid than the last metal gear i played (MS4), which i found clunky in the extreme. The narrative content is typical Kojima fare, which some people dont gel with and while im no fan boy i enjoy. Overall i think its excellent, as a preview for metal gear five, i have gone form being indifferent to the release to keenly anticipating it, i will def be purchasing it now based on this brief gaming experience. I would have been disappointed to spend $40 (here in australia) for a level i could blitz in 10 mins, but that cant detract from whats being presented, which is although short an excellent gaming experience, its a real shame to see the user score of this game drop to well below what it should be when reviewers only gripe by and large is the price they paid for the game and not the experience itself. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ground Zeroes is a prelude to the full MGS V The Phantom Pain, and is a nice surprise. It's a "little" AAA game focused on gameplay and with built-in replayability. It has both positives and negatives, which I'll discuss right away.

GZ is a sequel to MGS Peace Walker, and Big Boss has to rescue Chico and Paz from a US black site in Cuba. There is not much story-wise (Big Boss rescues Chico and Paz only to return to Mother Base and see it destroyed by the mysterious XOF and falls into coma after his helicopter was shot down) but it's interesting nonetheless as it sets the events of The Phantom Pain in motion. That scene in the helicopter (where Paz was operated) got into my stomach. Also, the cassette tapes flesh out the story, covering events prior to the mission. The only downside is that the main mission lasts about an hour, and can be completed in 5 minutes or so if you know what to do, skip the cut-scenes, and exploit some AI weaknesses.

The gameplay has been revamped from previous games and it's full open world and you can play as you see fit. The game is set in a single map where US troops patrol and you have to sneak past them, as per the series' tradition. It's easy to be seen by enemies if you run around carelessly, and from different positions too, so the slow motion reflex mode is a godsend as it gives you a chance to take out an enemy before he raises the alarm. Most useful is the tagging mechanic, as the base can have dozens of enemy patrols and you have to keep track of them. If you are spotted and pursued, enemies will hunt you down and try to surround you, and they are really good at shooting you down. If you evade them, they will search the base for quite a time. The one AI complaint I have is that, if you hold up an enemy and tell him to drop down to the floor, he will remain there indefinitely or until an alarm sounds. That is a leftover from Peace Walker and shouldn't be present. There are a few weapons to choose from, but nothing beats the silenced tranquilizer pistol. You can't carry more than 4 weapons at a time, gone is the ability to carry tons of different weapons around. A nice addition is the ability to drive vehicles, but it's strange that classic gameplay beats (cardboard box, knock on wall, etc.) are missing. The CQC mechanic is present and more refined than ever. The missions (1 main mission and 6 side ops) are varied enough and can be completed in normal and hard difficulty. There is even a side op which will bring nostalgia to MGS fans, as it is somewhat set in Metal Gear Solid's Shadow Moses Island. There are also collectables (XOF patches and cassette tapes) to pick up. Finally, if the player completes all missions, he can upload his save file to benefit in The Phantom Pain (you get some extra soldiers for Mother Base, like Hideo Kojima himself!).

Going into the technicalities, the game is powered by the Fox Engine, which delivers beautiful graphics, although the side missions set in day time look rather bland compared to the night based main mission, which looks really nice. The game runs at a perfect 60 fps on console which makes the game feel much smoother than in the past where performance was bad. No dropped frames, no screen tearing, no nothing. On the sonic side of things, the actors perform well enough in this short game. Kiefer Sutherland voices Big Boss in a Spartan way (meaning he doesn't speak much at all), but is really good. Miller, Huey, Skull Face, Paz and Chico sound convincing but have little dialogue to truly establish their characters. Sound effects are nice, though.

Overall, Ground Zeroes is a nice game. When it originally came out it cost $30 and caused controversy, regarding it's value as "a $30 demo" (comparing it to the mythical "free" MGS 2 demo from 2000, but that really wasn't free because you also had to buy the Zone of the Enders game, but whatever). Nowadays it costs much less, but even at $30 it was worth every penny. There are many full priced $60-70 games which don't come close to feature all the goodies GZ has to offer to the gamer. Buy the game and enjoy it.

There are many changes introduced in Ground Zeroes, all for the better, Kojima has mastered the art of fusing cinematic with gameplay. Cutscenes are now continuously shot, almost in Alfonso Cuarón's style (director of the movie Gravity), bridging gaming and cinema viewing in one fluid motion.

Ground Zeroes immediately follows the story of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. For those who haven't played the PSP port game, worry not, Ground Zeroes offers backstory and Paz's diary to acclimate new comers. However, the knowledge of the prequel would make the short game more sympathetic. One thing that differs significantly is the tone, while Peace Walker wasn't exactly all sunshine and rainbow, Ground Zeroes is detectably more somber and brutal.

The size of the map is relatively large compared to areas from previous games; it also erases the transition between regions smoothly, although this scale is not nearly enough for a whole game. Fortunately, there are plenty of effects at play; lighting and rain effects are splendid. It presents glossy texture, well defined facial feature and smooth movement animation while using very little loading time. These graphical prowess converses well into events, the superb editing ensures that there's barely any cut or shift between scenes.

HUD has seen a bit of modification, map as well as on-screen display are presented in real time. Big Boss can mark targets or points of interest which is relayed to in-game visual. The mark system is rather similar to Batman Arkham's detective vision, although marked targets can only be sighted when Big Boss is stationary. The graphic is refined to more accommodate tactical gameplay, its only shortcomings are plastic grass and occasional pop-up in Xbox 360, but they are minor hindrances at best.

There are practically small selection of content, the story campaign and only several other side missions. The amount of gameplay featured in Ground Zeroes is just the bare essential. Basic such as hiding using covers or neutralizing enemies is taught in simple tutorials. Elements provide more interactions as different time will affect how well they can detect Big Boss; they will also react accordingly depending on the nature of the mission.

More advanced tactics and combat are available if players are willing to search deeper, but the arsenal is limited. There's bound to be more in the future as Kojima tends to create more opportunity to tackle challenges, although with such transformation in tone, there might be less comical methods. The use of helicopter extraction also proves that Phantom Pain could support simulation gameplay like Mother Base in Peace Walker.

One of the more distinguished changes in Ground Zeroes is Kiefer Sutherland as Big Boss. David Hayter has been the trademark voice of Snake for years, while it may have been for the best as Sutherland's voice fit the gritty vibe, it will be awkward for Metal Gear fans at first. Sound effects are familiar; the tracks are subtle yet powerful.

Paz's tapes from Peace Walker can be heard here as well, these honest diaries are cheerful yet also painful as she's torn between her duty and emotions. Despite the short cutscenes, everyone does an excellent performance. The sad song "Here's to You" is icing on the cake. It's a short-lived experience, but nothing less than an emotionally moving one.

The game only provides two hours of campaign, it has few others side ops, but since the setting is rehearsed in the same place, it might feel too confining. Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is an odd one, the story is undeniably brilliant, even more so considering its brief existence, but it can't be considered a full game as it's not meant to be as such. It is, by the series comparison, the equivalent of prologue and extra VR missions.

However, there's alot to like here and that's the reason why I'm not blasting this game. The main campaign has a good future if this is the type of game we'll be playing. I loved how everything was done and it came together. Plus, 30 dollars, while high, isn't as high as it once was. If this game was still 40 dollars, I would have given it a zero. But the fact still remains that something that should have been a downloadable only game for about 20 bucks was released as a full title. There's also something to be said about Kiefer Sutherland playing Snake. While he wasn't bad, it just isn't the same as with David Hayter. He WAS Snake and taking him away from the character that made his name is just sad. Plus it just sounds so wrong not to hear the regular Snake voice we've all grown to love. The decision has been made but I can already tell you it was a bad one. Expand

It's quality over quantity and even after you finish the main mission, there are still 4 side ops to complete, XOF tags to find, and the console exclusive missions "deja vu" and "jamais vu". It's $19 for the standard PS3 and XBOX 360 version's and $29.99 for the next gen versions. which I believe to be a fair price for what you get. Now, if the game stuck with the original $40 or even $60 release, then that is a problem but to give a game like this a 2 or 0 when some of you haven't even played it and are just going of the reports of critics is a bit ridiculous. Some complaints I do have with the game is the lack of story as the majority we have already seen through previous demo's of the game (excluding the audio logs) and the ending didn't bring really bring the "shock factor" as it feels a bit shoehorned just to establish how dark The Phantom Pain may be. The story, however short, is simple but good, tying up the story's of both the previous game, Peace Walker, and Phantom Pain. The gameplay is very, pardon the pun, solid. As previous Metal Gear games have, stealth is preferred over action, with kills actually weighing down your score after completion of a mission. After completion of the primary mission, you have access to 5 additional missions, each with varied objectives. A sixth mission is unlocked following the collection of all nine of the game's "XOF patches," and the mission you unlock depends on what system you are playing on. However, there is one gripe I have with this game, which is shared by many others: it's price. The game for me just barely reaches the $20 asking price for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 digital download, but not quite worth the $30 price for 360/PS3 physical and Xbox One and PS4 physical/digital. But if you get past it's short length and debatable pricing, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a great sign of things to come for the Metal Gear series. Expand

We're not getting the Phantom Pain for a while, so Konami shipped out Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes to fill in the gap and hold over the fans who've been waiting for a game. Unfortunately, because of that, fans of the Metal Gear series received an incredibly fun experience, but ultimately, a fraction of a full game.

First, I want to state what's good about this game. The first thing is the gameplay, which is easily the best it's ever been for the franchise. I personally have never felt more in control of my character in any game before this one. All of the movements you're capable of doing is amazing. You can perform CQC moves around corners, over ledges, and even while sprinting, with the only thing missing being attacks from above. Instead of dragging enemies to areas to hide them, Snake puts an enemy on his shoulders, allowing you to run freely, crouch, sprint, and even aim your gun. If you want to drag an enemy while in a choke-hold, you no longer have to stand to do so. You can bring the enemy down low to hide yourself better. The movement in this game is incredibly freeing and flexible.

Stealth has been improved too. Instead of just making sure the enemy doesn't see you, you can use the environment to obscure you. Moving in darker areas, staying low, and hiding in foliage are all new elements you can use to make Snake harder to spot. Also, even when enemies see you, you usually have time to hide yourself before the enemy can identify you.

To compensate for the lack of any radar, the game added two new features, one of which is the reflex mode. When an enemy spots and identifies you as an threat, time slows down for a short time, allowing you to put an enemy down with your gun, or (if you're close enough), put the enemy in a choke hold. Plus, reflex usually only applies to one enemy, unless multiple enemies see you at the same time, which rarely happens. In some situations, I was able to activate reflex mode to take down one guy, and then reactivate it when a second enemy saw me, allowing me to take down him as well. Mastering this skill will allow you to easily take down a small group of enemies, giving you some satisfying take downs. Admittedly, this can make the game pretty easy, but if you don't like it, you can turn it off in options. Also, you have the ability to make enemies, allowing you to see them from any position, even through walls. Both the reflex and mark abilities are incredible mechanics.

Graphics are incredibly detailed, with beautiful environments and incredibly well done character models and runs at a buttery smooth 60 frames per seconds, and the soundtrack is amazing, easily living up to the music that the Metal Gear series is known for.

The gameplay and presentation of this game is amazing. Unfortunately, what makes this game disappointing is how little of it you actually get.

Any fan knows that this game received a lot of flak for it's run time of two hours or less. The truth is, it's even shorter than that. On my first try, I completed the game in 82 minutes, without knowing where the objectives are and without knowing the layout of the map in my head. There are side missions, but these missions average at around 15 minutes a piece, meaning you have less than four hours of gameplay here. Now, it is true that you can one hundred percent the game, and most gamers will probably try to one hundred percent it. However, this concept is flawed.

When I look at a game that was fun to one hundred percent, I think of the Batman Arkham series. I've done that for all three games, but I could not bring myself to do that on here because most of the side objectives are tedious, boring, or just plain stupid. I can understand the game wanting me to S rank all missions, or wanting me to kill all the enemies, use no weapons, or set off any alerts, because that's fun and challenging. However, asking me to mark all enemies, rescue all the prisoners, find all cassette tapes, as well as several other repetitive tasks isn't fun. One objective simply requires you to play the mission a second time. That's it. Plus, a lot of these objectives are unlocked by completing the others, so you can't do a lot of these objectives simultaneously. That means, to complete this game, you have to a S rank a mission on both difficulties, which usually doesn't happen on the first try, then complete all the extra objectives, which requires about five playthroughs, and even more if you screw up. So, you'll end up havign to play each mission about 6 or seven times. This makes every mission repetitive and takes away from the game's overall fun.

In the end, Ground Zeroes has great gameplay and an amazing presentation, which shows that Phantom Pain could easily be one of the best games of the year when it comes out. However, Ground Zeroes' overall lack of content and cheap replay value leave me with a sour taste in my mouth toward it, which is ultimately very sad for what could've been a great game.

And, of course what everyone's been talking about, I finished the first mission, went into a great scene, then, BOOM, credits, and to be continued...wtf? Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a prologue to an upcoming game Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and works as a teaser to what is yet to come from the full "Metal Gear Experience". Here are a list of my thoughts after completing the game.

    PROS:
OPEN WORLD. Open world allows multiple ways of tackling your current objective (infiltrate the base on a back of a truck or sneak in without drawing the guards' attention for example) and exploration for items or guards to interrogate for more information.
MOVEMENT. Snake moves smoothly and changes stances dynamically on the move compared to previous games' tank-like controls.
REPLAY VALUE. Each mission has two difficulty settings, ranks depending on your score during a said mission and trials to unlock. My total game time was boosted up to 15 hours from completing the missions on S-rank, finding all the hidden items and unlocking all the trials.
MARKING. In an open world it's hard to keep track of your enemies hence the inclusion of marking. Really makes the game lot less frustrating if you scout the area a bit and mark some enemies with your binos.
REFLEX MODE. In addition to the marking the reflex mode was introduced, too. This can be turned off for added difficulty and points.
WEATHER and LIGHTING. The weather conditions affect the patrolling guard AI significantly: the rain muffles the sound of your footsteps and the brighter the day is the farther the guards can see.
CUT SCENES. The near flawless transition from game play to cut scene is great.
DIFFICULTY CUSTOMIZATION. People craving for more difficulty can handicap their game play thorough multiple options... and setting rules for themselves like "neutralize all guards with hold-ups" or something similar.
GUARD AI (At least on Hard difficulty). If you get spotted, you are likely to go down since these guards swarm and seal all the possible escape routes. Their increased vision and hearing make the even tougher than their Normal counterparts

    MIXED:
CONTEXT SENSITIVE ACTIONS. Leaning on a wall or box can get clunky if done in tight spaces.
CRAWLING. Your main mode of transportation can be really clunky when you are about to crawl in tights spaces or over tiny objects bolted on the ground.
RADIO. I hope we get to see fully realized radio in The Phantom Pain like in the previous installments.
MISSION LENGTH. My first play through of the first mission took about 90 minutes as I was exploring and sneaking around aside from the current objective. If done efficiently the missions can be completed well under 30 mins and speed ran in even less.

    CONS:
STORY. This feels like a "third final real ending" to the Peace Walker. Not much happens what hasn't been shown in the trailers. Though the best is yet to come in The Phantom Pain.
WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION. The Tranquilizer and INFINITE magazines. The game becomes really easy if these two are exploited. Highly suggest to handicap your usage of these if you want more difficulty.

From game play and presentation alone, I give Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes 7/10.
Don't buy it if you can rent it or borrow it but it's definitely worth a shot for the game play alone.

This game is to trick fanboys into buying this game, don't fall for this scheme. You can defend this game all you want but if a franchise you aren't a fan of does the same thing, you'll be the first in line to complain about how it's a rip-off and the developers aren't being fair to the consumers (pure fanboyism right there). So yes, pretty much my main complaint is the game's short length but that's justifiable giving that the game cost half the full price (no developers should get away with that). If you really want to play this game, wait until it's in the bargain bin since you would still have to wait ages for the actual game anyway. I give this game a 7 because the gameplay is what you would expect from a MGS game. But save your money on other games (or things) or even for the future when the actual game (TPP) finally releases. You'll be glad you didn't have to save up that much. You won't miss out on anything if you watch the walkthrough on YT intstead. The exclusive content for TPP that you get with this game doesn't justify the game for it's short length, not worth it. I don't know about you but I would rather pay full price for TPP (even if I have to wait for it) then pay full price for TPP and pay half for the demo so that I can play a little bit of TPP now. Playing through the campaign a couple of times it becomes apparent that this game is all about choices, like most other MGS games you can take the stealth approach and be rewarded for it or kill everyone in your way and while you won't be punished, your final score will be lower.

The controls are still a little clunky at times, when you are prone and moving around, Snake has a tendency to do whatever he wants until you get used to it. At times it reminded me of the old tank controls for MGS on PS1 and it made me laugh.

If you are in this for just the campaign, you will be disappointed by it's length but there is a lot to see here with the side missions.

I really did enjoy this game for what it was, it's a preview of Phantom Pain, an expensive one at that.

It is short but sweet and it show's a taste of what's to come but unless you are in need of a MGS fix, it might be worth waiting for Phantom Pain and picking this game up a week or two before it comes out as it will probably be down to $15-20.

Well, those two are pretty much in a bad shape after some torturing, and it's up to the "Big Boss" to save them.

    Plus point:
    - Played this on PS4, i must say that it has a stunning graphic, and with 60fps, this game is just awesome. One of the visually beautiful game on PS4 at the moment.
    - One map to rule them all. Well, as you know, this MGS is partially sandbox. You can ride a jeep, tank, use an anti-air gun to take out your enemies. Well, the map isn't that big, so it's easy to remember places.
    - Fun side mission. You can save Hideo Kojima in one of the side mission. Heh, it's good to be a game producer. You can make yourself into a game character lol.

    Minus point:
    - Not so heavy arsenal. There are like limited type of weaponry that you can use in this game. And most of it makes a very loud noises, and the enemy will find you as soon as possible.
    - It gave us 2 style of playing this game. Stealth or Frontal War. But the point is, you can't clear the game in a Frontal War. Enemy will respawn endlessly, unless you went into hiding. As i'm not very good at stealth game, this kind of game is my natural enemy.
    - For having only 1 story mission, this game cost half of one original game, and that's expenive. Well, personally i think that this game should cost only like $9.99. More like a DLC rather than a standalone game. Even, Infamous: Blood Festival is longer than this game.

    The verdict:
Metal Gear Solid V : Ground Zeroes is a solid intro to the Phantom Pain, it's fun to play and visually stunning. But having only one story mission that you can finish in like 10 minutes, and cost around $25, makes me feels like it's not worth buying it as a new game, but oh well, since i played this on PS4, the graphic itself is worth $15 + gameplay maybe $10.
So 7/10 for this game. — playing Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes.

The last time i played an MGS game was quite a few years ago, and its great to see how this prequel to MGS the phantom pain has expanded the options for how you approach each of the missions. Run in guns blazing or take the more stealthy approach. That's where this game shines. The stealthy approach offers a lot of opportunity for creative play.

Unfortunately, after a few play through's you start to wish for the expanded arsenal promised in MGS phantom pain. This game just serves to whet your appetite for the next release. And thats where it loses points for me. For all its got going for it, its just missing alot to be called a full fledged release.

If you are like me and are looking to sharpen your MGS skills and see how far this game has come, then pick this up. Gameplay is solid enough that you don't really have to know much about the story.

The graphics were excellent, the cut scenes and gameplay fluently roll between and unlike previous games, it doesn't make you sit through huge chunks of cut scenes, another pet hate from the older ones.

It's a really good little game and as a MGS hater, I find I can't flaw Ground Zeroes for any reason.

Recommend a download and play to all PS+ members, and even if its reduced in sale to £10 in the future, pick it up as a prequal to what should be a great title

The gameplay is really good although quite different from your average MGS game. If the phantom pain is like this it will be one of the best games for the 8th generation. After the masterpiece MGS4 (which is my favorite game of all time) I thought that there would be no new MGS games (mainstream anyway.) So when i heard of a new game, including the prelude game, ground zeroes, i did a double back flip.

Now, one thing that i must get out of the way, that every reviewer is going to bring up, the length. Yes the game is short. Yes, i beat the main mission in a matter of an hour. That doesn't mean i didn't enjoy it. I actually very much enjoyed it. It offers much more refined gameplay than any metal gear solid game that i have ever played, which i hope MGS5: the phantom pain can improve upon even more.

The game is also highly replayable in my opinion. No, not for the collectibles, but for the immense amount of choice there is. You can choose what route you wish to take to infiltrate the base. You can sneak in, you can go in guns blazing, you can snipe from a vantage point, you can recon, there is just so much variability here.

There are also some side missions, called "side ops" here. They offer some great variation and extra content. On the downside, they use the same tired map from the main mission. It would have been nice to see some other locations. Another thing i must bring up is the price. The full retail price is 40 dollars, but i bought it a few days after launch for 30 dollars, paired with a PS plus discount.

Ground zeroes is a taste of what is to come in phantom pain. I just wish they would have had this as the prologue of phantom pain instead of selling it as almost full retail. Would i recommend it? mmm, only if you can get it a discounted price, or if it's free on PS plus. 7/10

Back then you would get a monthly demo disc of all the latest and greatest games for the price of the magazine (I think was like $7.99 or something). It was a great basically free DEMO. It's unfortunate that the game industry has led us into greed the way it has charging a demo for $20+. It would have been nice if konomi had released it on PSN for free the way Destiny did. This game is a demo as you can see and as such should be bought at Gamestop and then within seven days returned after you beat the 1 hour or so game time for full refund. That's really the best you can do. It is a good way to get used to the controls and gameplay used in Phantom Pain but beyond that it's a scam. With that being said, the story is hard to follow and kinda half assed compared to the original (and Sons of Liberty demo) which really just played the beginning of the full game. I honestly think Konomi and Kojomi have simply lost their minds but that's ok because the Metal gear vibe is there and I honestly can't wait to play Phantom Pain just to get my MGS fix. Expand

I don't like judging games by their price but this is a $30 intro, that's too much. Ground Zeroes(GZ) is an introduction and although people were going crazy for anything to do with The Phantom Pain(TPP), Konami should have kept it in their pants so to say. The story that is there for continuity issues only has 5 minutes of information that you can review on Wikipedia if you want to skip this entry. While I would've liked to critique him, Keifer Sutherland utters maybe 30+ words (8 of them sounding like they were recorded in a trash can) through the entirety of game play and I hope that this is not foreboding shadow of what is to come while Kaz yells in your ear the entire mission. I like my Snake more rhetorical. We will most likely see GZ attached to TPP whenever it is released and maybe we will see the true potential then. For now try Red Box or catch a digital sale. Now the campaign's GAMEPLAY is superb! The A.I is intelligent, acting realistic, never being to dumb or over sensitive. The Fox Engine is amazing, creating a graphical experience like no other, immersing you not only with its graphical fidelity, but also with its realistic sound design. To be honest I enjoyed every moment. So that makes it 30 minutes of fun. How much would you pay for that? 1 maybe 2 dollars? NO! Guess what you'll be paying... 30 dollars!!!!!! 30 DOLLARS!!!!! WTF?! And don't say you can do the side missions because they're about 2 minutes each, adding an extra 10 minutes to the game at max. Despite the story having an interesting premise, it fails to grip you purely because of its length. You're tasked with rescuing captured soldiers behind enemy lines. Sounds cool doesn't it, but as soon as things get good, the game abruptly ends. In addition to this, there's not a singal boss fight in the game, something Metal Gear games are famous for. To add insult to injury, there's not even a cardboard box in game! WTF!? Screw you people who wanted fan service outside of some 2 minute side mission. And ironically, it's the hardcore Metal Gear fans defending the game. So after this review you'd think this game would have pretty low sales. WRONG!
