Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a prologue to an upcoming game Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and works as a teaser to what is yet to come from the full "Metal Gear Experience". Here are a list of my thoughts after completing the game.

    PROS:
OPEN WORLD. Open world allows multiple ways of tackling your current objective (infiltrate the base on a back of a truck or sneak in without drawing the guards' attention for example) and exploration for items or guards to interrogate for more information.
MOVEMENT. Snake moves smoothly and changes stances dynamically on the move compared to previous games' tank-like controls.
REPLAY VALUE. Each mission has two difficulty settings, ranks depending on your score during a said mission and trials to unlock. My total game time was boosted up to 15 hours from completing the missions on S-rank, finding all the hidden items and unlocking all the trials.
MARKING. In an open world it's hard to keep track of your enemies hence the inclusion of marking. Really makes the game lot less frustrating if you scout the area a bit and mark some enemies with your binos.
REFLEX MODE. In addition to the marking the reflex mode was introduced, too. This can be turned off for added difficulty and points.
WEATHER and LIGHTING. The weather conditions affect the patrolling guard AI significantly: the rain muffles the sound of your footsteps and the brighter the day is the farther the guards can see.
CUT SCENES. The near flawless transition from game play to cut scene is great.
DIFFICULTY CUSTOMIZATION. People craving for more difficulty can handicap their game play thorough multiple options... and setting rules for themselves like "neutralize all guards with hold-ups" or something similar.
GUARD AI (At least on Hard difficulty). If you get spotted, you are likely to go down since these guards swarm and seal all the possible escape routes. Their increased vision and hearing make the even tougher than their Normal counterparts

    MIXED:
CONTEXT SENSITIVE ACTIONS. Leaning on a wall or box can get clunky if done in tight spaces.
CRAWLING. Your main mode of transportation can be really clunky when you are about to crawl in tights spaces or over tiny objects bolted on the ground.
RADIO. I hope we get to see fully realized radio in The Phantom Pain like in the previous installments.
MISSION LENGTH. My first play through of the first mission took about 90 minutes as I was exploring and sneaking around aside from the current objective. If done efficiently the missions can be completed well under 30 mins and speed ran in even less.

    CONS:
STORY. This feels like a "third final real ending" to the Peace Walker. Not much happens what hasn't been shown in the trailers. Though the best is yet to come in The Phantom Pain.
WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION. The Tranquilizer and INFINITE magazines. The game becomes really easy if these two are exploited. Highly suggest to handicap your usage of these if you want more difficulty.

From game play and presentation alone, I give Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes 7/10.
Don't buy it if you can rent it or borrow it but it's definitely worth a shot for the game play alone.

I understand the complaints about length but seriously this game is a teaser to how amazing the full game is going to be. 200 times the size of this and i've spent about 10 hours playing already only 38% complete. I would pay £24 for this again no problem. The quality is unbelievable. As for people expecting this on ps plus for free good luck with that you will be waiting a hell of a long time (forever). The Phantom Pain is truly going to be the net gen seller. I wouldn't even waste my time with this on last gen consoles as it won't do the game justice. Expand

From there we have arrived to this day, when he is really so arrogant that he will release a 60-90 min slice from a 60$ game and sell it for almost the full retail price. This is Kojimas new "practical joke" to the fans and gamers. He knows that the Metal Gear fans are so fanatic that they will grasp at this terrible fraud of a deal and defend their purchase to the death with arguments like "You can get 1500 hours from this if you just play it 1450 times! So it's a really good deal!". This is a demo. Nothing more. If you can get this for free, then go for it. Otherwise this is with the help of the mindless fans will set a dangerous example, which will be followed by EA and Activision and other publishers after that. If this fraud of a "game" does well, every single big release will eventually cut off 1 hour of the game and sell it for 40$ as "a prologue to help with the wait anticipation." Releasing this under the name "Metal Gear Solid 5" is nothing more than criminal fraud and Kojima and Konami should be sentenced to pay a hefty fine to discourage this kind of deceit toward customers. Do not buy this. Hold on to your right to have actual *content* in your games. Expand

The story is powerful if you're a fan of the series, I can't imagine newcomers will really get caught up with it.

As for the length- the way I see it, it's priced like DLC, but with way more content than any DLC. If you don't care much for the improved graphics, get the PS3/360 version for $20. The Last of Us: Left Behind, my favorite DLC out there, was only 2 hours long and 15 dollars, and I would say it was well-worth my money, as does every critic. This game has a 2 hour main mission, 5 30-minute side-missions, and all of it stuffed with replay value for 5 more dollars. Just set your expectations in the right place- this isn't a full-blown game, it's essentially a DLC, and is priced as such.

Although the main mission will only last somewhere between 1-3 hours depending on how you approach it, the 5 side ops that you unlock (4 of them by beating the main mission and 1 by collecting all the XOF patches in the main mission) keep you entertained for hours on end. The ranking at the end of each mission (S,A,B,C,D,F) keeps you wanting to get the best ranking possible. Also, the story pushes the boundaries in video games. Not to spoil anything, but the ending will have you clenching your fist! In conclusion, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is a great game by itself and makes me even more excited to get my hands on The Phantom Pain!

'Demo' has no qualification for 'Critic Score'.

I'll just wait for 'full retail game'.
and then, write review that 'full retail game' for critic score.
So I have no criticism for 'this demo'.

All the fun and interesting features of Metal Gear stealth have all been stripped away. The stealth boils down to spamming tranquillizer darts into enemies. Sneaking has become a joke, it's all about trial and error now. The enemies have a ridiculous line of sight and unlike past Metal Gear games where you can always find places to hide or find ways to conceal yourself, in this game the most you can do to conceal yourself is hide behind walls.

Because actually attempting to stealth requires you to restart the game over and over, you'll have a great time constantly skipping the same cutscenes and running back and forth between the cliffs saving prisoners. Eventually you'll be able to beat the stealth, but only after you have memorised the location of every single enemy in every single area and where they move around.

If you don't care about the stealth though, don't get your hopes up. The enemy AI is stupid. Even MGS1 had better AI combat than this. You can literally hide in some small building and just kill the AI while occasionally waiting for your health to regenerate when you get hit. I was able to kill about 500 soldiers just camping in one spot.

Oh and the story itself is a total ripoff. you get about 30 mins worth of cutscenes including the credits. There is only one level, camp omega. every mission takes place in this one level. The main mission takes about as long as the tanker chapter in MGS2, The tanker had at least 40 mins of cutscenes though, and it had a boss. There is no boss fight in GZ though.

The controls seem to have taken a step back from MGS4 and the camera is absolutely awful. Often you'll have an awkward camera placement where you can't see a thing. The cqc has also become overly complicated, most of the actions are based around doing certain combinations while mashing the button or holding it. The old cqc was a lot simpler in my opinion.

The radio chatter in the game is extremely annoying. Miller gives you completely useless information such as "press X to crawl" or "tranquilizers put enemies to sleep". He never has anything interesting to say, no entertaining codec calls. In the cutscenes too, he doesn't sound very emotional. Keither and everyone else manages to deliver an excellent performance.

As short as it is, overall I'd say it has a good story and some of the best graphics I've seen for a console game. But the gameplay itself is too frustrating and tedious, especially the part where you have to carry the prisoners to the chopper. Successfully stealthing shouldn't boil down to trial and error. This game is a massive low point in the series and the quality has dropped significantly. I hope that things are drastically improved for the Phantom Pain.

You will die and restart and checkpoints over and over and over and over. Normally I'm fine with this, I looove stealth games and love to restart a mission so I can get by with a non-lethal playthrough but this game doesn't teach you anything when you die. It's just random **** happening and you are expected to wade through it until you get lucky enough to get to a new checkpoint without walking into an enemy's incredibly long line of sight. It's ambitious sure but the core gameplay has suffered a lot at the addition of the "open world" (i.e. one giant boring level) which sounds cool in theory and the ability to drive cars, which I didn't know any metal gear fan ever wanted to do in a metal gear game? The driving feels just as bad as the rest of the game anyway. I rented this game and I'm still super disappointed. Expand

I bought Ground Zeros and I can sincerely say that I wasn't so disappointed for a long time. This "game" is merely a demo which isn't worth it's price because of it's length. It's something that should be available from PSN for about quarter of it's price or bundled with other game like MGS2 Tanker chapter was bundled with Zone of the Enders. No wonder that so many people got so angry because this is nothing more than just another case when big company overconfident in popularity of their game is milking gamers dry. Also no wonder why so many game sites gave Ground Zeros so high score. It's not a secret that lower score than accepted for MGS game means less interviews, promotional materials and early development info on new games from Konami for them. I don't feel sorry for these who are paid to give high score here but I feel real sorry for fanboys who are doing this for free. And you know what's really funny? Ground Zeros will be included with Phantom Pain for a standard price of full game.

If you do, you'll see that i love this series, will always defend it but more importantly, I'll always be honest about my reviews! Well, lets get started. The graphics: simply amazing! I thought killzone shadowfall looked great but this games is amazing in the graphics department. The gameplay is the same except you can run by pressing L3 which is(in my own opinion) weird to due in a metal gear game. Controls: well they are essentially the same with some exceptions like running. The radio is accessed by pressing L2. Story: um....you might want to sit down for this if you haven't heard it from mr. Kojima himself but this is nothing more than a demo! But it revoles around saving paz and chico which doesn't exactly go as planned. Your in a military camp with plenty of open space to traverse but sadly this is where the problems comes into play for ground zeros. I want to say that this camp is snakes personal play ground but there's so little to do in it besides sneak around,go all out or die! Almost all buildings are locked! But you can enter vehicles which, in retrospect, makes this worse since there's little to do in your environment. The camo system has been removed and replaced with...um....nothing! They also removed the boxes, bandages, rations, back pain meds, stamina gage when hanging and just about anything else that made metal gear solid...well...metal gear solid. This games atmosphere is far from any metal gear game, meaning, i didnt feel like i was playing metal gear but some sort of cheap knock off of metal gear! Why? Well, everytime you vet noticed, the game slows down time for you, giving you MORE than enough time to head shot any enemies who spotted you thus ending the alarm status if successful and you will be successful, and this is where this demo differs from previous entries in this great series. The metal gear mood has been replaced with your typical main stream third person shooter. Automatic health regen takes away the strategy that came with rations....i dont care about this game being short because this is nothing more than a cash grab demo which i rented. No one should buy this game, NO ONE! Fan or not, this demo sbould be avoided even by hardcore mgs fans. I see this demo being released along with the game of the year edition of the phantom pain! There's nothing exactly wrong with this demo with five extra missions but as far as metal gear games go...phantom pain seems to be heading in a different direction even though past metal gear games can still work! I give this demo what it actually deserves....5/10!! Since there's no way on this earth that ANYONE will keep playing this short demo with five missions that take place in the same area as the main mission, more than a few times....you'll forget this demo as quickly as it can be beaten! During the one to three hours it takes to complete the single player campaign it will be hard to not stop and look around and just be impressed.

Playing through the campaign a couple of times it becomes apparent that this game is all about choices, like most other MGS games you can take the stealth approach and be rewarded for it or kill everyone in your way and while you won't be punished, your final score will be lower.

The controls are still a little clunky at times, when you are prone and moving around, Snake has a tendency to do whatever he wants until you get used to it. At times it reminded me of the old tank controls for MGS on PS1 and it made me laugh.

If you are in this for just the campaign, you will be disappointed by it's length but there is a lot to see here with the side missions.

I really did enjoy this game for what it was, it's a preview of Phantom Pain, an expensive one at that.

It is short but sweet and it show's a taste of what's to come but unless you are in need of a MGS fix, it might be worth waiting for Phantom Pain and picking this game up a week or two before it comes out as it will probably be down to $15-20.

Ground Zeros is a game that I will never forget, when I played Ground Zero, it gave me a nice throwback to the MGS series, I was exploding with excitement when I launched it and saw a familiar face, I felt like crashing a plane into a building.

As for the game itself MGS Ground Zeroes picks up almost immediately after the events of peace walker and involves Naked Snake (AKA Big Boss) infiltrating a US blacksite known as Camp omega, a deliberate and shameless analogy to Guantanamo bay.the short but oh so sweet story is definitely among the most dark of the entire series, Kojima mainly explores themes of torture and loss as well as rape...Kojima certainly wasn't lying when he said that MGSV would explore taboo subject matters.

the gameplay is undoubtedly the best the series has ever seen, Big Boss moves with fluidity and it both looks and feels awesome. the emission of the HUD greatly augments the games immersion, and random enemy movement patterns keep you on the edge of your seat constantly. Enemy AI is also greatly increased, the day time missions can be incredibly difficult as enemies can spot you with ease, the evolution of enemy AI in my opinion validates the new reflex mode although if you're up for a real challenge it can be switched off. during combat enemies act much more naturally than previous titles, they charge flank and take cover on the harder difficulties they are indeed a force to be reckoned with

overall MGS Ground Zeroes is a welcome addition to the collections of longtime dedicated fans, otherwise consider a rent, a borrow, a wait for a sale, or an overall pass

Best way to sum up this "game" is like a movie studio taking all their moving trailers, cropping it onto one disc and selling it for half the price of the actual movie. Sure you get the bare bones of what the game will be like, but I can watch a gameplay video for this. It's over priced and side missions feel so distant from a MGS stealth game, having no thought being put into them. I have unlocked all the extras and played the side ops.

I have played ALL Metal Gear games. I have been a fan of the series since the first MGS.

This is a demo. There's no way this is any kind of a prologue since the entire story is already in trailers.. NOTHING new is really revealed at all.

This really is the equivalent of the MGS demo that came out in '98 but you are paying $30 for it with some extras on the side.

This isn't even the equivalent of the VR Missions expansion.

I would have expected this from a developer that pumps out CoD games, or from EA or some other swindling company.

I'm incredibly disappointed this has come from Konami/Kojima Productions. This should have been $10 at best.

Extras and side ops are just that.. extras. You play ANY game way above the usual amount of playtime you'll get out of it. Indeed I have replayed MGS games countless times now, but when it boils down to it.. at a MINIMUM you should get an hour of actual game for every $10.

This has not happened, we have payed $20 or $30 for 1 hour 30 mins at best.. they originally wanted $40 for this game.

I really wanted to justify this purchase but ultimately I can't. People are saying 'oh but extras, oh but replayability'. It's not a valid point.. I can replay ANY game as much as I want.. most other games have extras or side missions.

Rent this game.. the Phantom Pain will be out early next year anyway.

It's irrelevant how great the gameplay is, the music, the graphics or anything else.

In actual fact I'm quite pissed off that they ditched the inventory system, we now have regen health, there's no codec (super lame), David Hayter is MIA (although I believe this is basically a troll by Kojima), Miller's VA is awful and we badly need Cam Clarke back in the mix if possible. Cool gadgets and stuff are all but gone. No more personal radar.

It's ditched a lot of things that make Metal Gear a Metal Gear game. It's hard to believe Kojima expected no backlash for this game.

Objectively this is a game that's terrible value, but has really great content, but is a terrible Metal Gear game.

It will please people who have no sense of value and who have never played a Metal Gear or stealth game before.

Which is exactly what it's done.. appealed to the lowest common denominator.

Yes the campaign is short, and yes maybe it could have been just integrated into the phantom pain similar to MGS2, but there is so much replay value here, when you add in the side ops, difficulty options, and collectables, you could well clock over 10-15 hours (at least), plus its more user friendly than the previous games as in weather your a long term MGS fan or not its easy to get into.

This Game is Worth Every Penny, and Here is Why:

    Story & Value/ Replayability

Kojima was able to fit an amazing amount of content into this simple package. Despite it being a prologue, there is a deep story hidden here that takes @ least 10 hours to uncover and much more to fully appreciate. for those who are used to 10 hours of pre-made cutscenes, you may miss out on the meat of Ground Zeroes which is spread out much like Peace Walker both in cutscenes as well as audio cassette tapes. The tapes offer a realistic way of receiving more story information as you are listening to them as big boss would be, and Wow the story they tell really add a lot of depth and impact to the main mission. The fact that Kojima was able to fit such a compelling story into such a brief time frame is impressive in and of itself and if you're wondering if 2-4 hours of game play is worth $30, I'm inclined to say that 2-4 hours of story THIS powerful IS worth it although I will say that it is DEFINITELY worth $20. At the same time I really don't want to encourage publishers to start splitting their games up or charging this much for what is essentially pre-DLC, but it's Metal Gear in prime form and is such high quality (possibly the best case of storytelling in the series) that were you not to pick this game up, you would be severely be missing out on something great. I haven't been effected by a game like I have been by Ground Zeroes in a Long Time. People saying this game is 30 mins only played the main campaign once and didn't play it the way it was meant to be played. Listening to the audio cassettes adds context to the main mission and gives you reason to replay it. You see its not just rescuing Chico from point A and bringing him to point B, Once you see what all lead up to that you understand the weight of WHY you must save him and that adds a lot of meaning to this mission as opposed to games like Assassins Creed where you are just completing mundane tasks via waypoints

    As for the

    Gameplay:

A great leap forward for the series. I'ts a revamping that was needed and its awesome. Its new enough that it felt completely foreign my first time picking up the controller but many things that you may have learned as a long time fan still work, like crawling to avoid detection and other things that are uniquely Metal Gear. At first glance it may look as though this "open world" format looks like Splinter Cell as I have heard many people say and I myself thought, but I assure you that it is a singular experience that feels like its own thing. The best addition to the gameplay is the fact that you finally feel like the badass supersoldier Big Boss is supposed to be as opposed his skills mainly being showcased in cutscenes. You can go in Gunz Blazing and CQC or shadowbox enemy soldiers in pure combat bliss. Combat has never been at the forefront of the MGS series but in this game its actually a viable way to play the game and complete missions. It is intense and fulfilling. You can also change the settings to aim in first person view for throwback MGS2/MGS3 fans if you want

Stealth is still the main focus and the obvious choice for any true MGS player though. It really does feel like a typical MGS game with a full 360 degree environment as opposed to the more linear level design of past titles. The reflex mode and enemy tagging helps with that fact as it is a lot harder to keep track of enemies now. All of this can be turned off of course although I found the reflex mode growing on me a bit even as an long time MGS player. And thats another great thing about the game is the ability to customize the options to your liking or even the button layout

    Visually:

Stunning, even on last gen. I don't have to say too much here as you can see for yourself how good the game looks, but I will say that it's very immersive. The camera is zoomed in a bit closer so you can appreciate the graphics, and the draw distance is impressive. One of the best looking games out right now especially for PS4. The top notch graphics add to the realism which is also present in the narritive creating one of the most engrossing games I've ever played.

    Verdict:

All in all its a top notch game and easily worth $20. $30 is a bit much but at the same time less than $15 for this product seems unreasonable on MY end as this is NOT a demo and one of the boldest experiences I've had in a Video Game. Give it a chance, listen to the cassette tapes and soak up the full experience and you will see that this is a far more reasonable package than ppl are giving it credit for. Its some of Kojimasan's Best work so don't miss out because of the $30 price which is the only bad thing I can really say about the game and is the only thing keeping me from rating it a 10/10. But even if you have to find a way to get it for $15 (which at that price it's a steal), you definitely don't want to miss this one

This game is meant to be played on Hard difficulty. The amount of options available to the player to overcome challenges is a lot of fun. I'm a traditionalist and prefer to take a stealthy approach but the game allows you (on normal at least), to go guns blazing as well.

If this is a taste of what Phantom Pain has to offer, then i'm delighted at the direction that Kojima is taking MGS. You will notice influences from games like Splinter Cell, Assassins Creed, Batman: Arkham City, and of course past MGS games.

I'll admit, it's not the best value. But Metal Gear lovers and stealth lovers will more than find their money's worth. For what it's worth, beating the game the first time leaves you with an 8% Completion Rate...

Short and sweet. I got the game because I was sure I could find a million things to do differently despite how short it was. I was right. The gameplay alone will have me hooked long enough to justify the purchase. If I had went by reviews, I would have skipped it. Rent or buy, you could do worse when it comes to playing this game.

30 BUCKS FOR A DEMO. In the past the MGS 2 demo was free with ZOE. MGS V is an example of a dirty practice. The main mission is only 1 hour length and the other missions are very stupid.

The story is compelling, the voice acting superb, and the easter eggs awesome.
Before critizing the game for his price and lenght, play it and enjoy it to the full, because at the end you will see where your money went.
I can assure you, it is worth it.
For its price, I couldnt find ONE weakness in this game. Maybe something related to the story, but not something that would ruin the tense and thrilling experience the game offered me.
It is your choice, wether to trust in biased reviews, with the only argument being the fact that the game is """""short""""", or to trust in your own experience and impressions, when you play it.

It's really a shame that such a credible developer/publisher tried to take advantage of the game's hype and fanbase (which gets smaller by the day) to make an easy cash-in...
And for those of you that are saying: "Blah blah blah, they warned people that the main mission was only about 2 hours long so if you don't like it don't buy it" , let me tell you something, have you heard of a game called "Dead Rising 2: Case Zero"? It was a prequel to Dead Rising 2, just like Ground Zeroes. The only differences were the price (it cost 5$ instead of 30$), the content (it was longer and more interesting) and the people behind it; I mean, you could maybe expect a rip-off from the Dead Rising franchise but from the Metal Gear franchise? No way, that was too ridiculously greedy.
SHAME ON YOU KONAMI... I just hope this doesn't sell well and other publishers start doing it, although for 30$ they don't need to sell that much to have a good profit.
First it was Rockstar's constant attempts at milking more money out of what already is the best selling franchise ever, and now this? What was a respectful and trusted company is now turning into EA.
They can pull off these "scams" and keep getting good revenues, but it's companies like Valve that don't need to worry about cashing-in easily and still have some of the best-selling franchises ever, due to the simple fact that they care about their consumers.

Metal Gear always has a message to pass along about the world through its characters. Ground Zeroes is not the first short-length game with such a price tag. It was no secret before its release, so buy it or don't and move on. It's as simple as that, no need to make such a big fuss about it because it's nothing new. Overall, what matters the most is the content of the game, and Kojima has always delivered high quality content in his MGS games. It seems this new entry in the Metal Gear Saga will only resonate with MGS fans. If people focus only on the time frame and price then the content will be overlooked, but each to their own decision. There are many changes introduced in Ground Zeroes, all for the better, Kojima has mastered the art of fusing cinematic with gameplay. Cutscenes are now continuously shot, almost in Alfonso Cuarón's style (director of the movie Gravity), bridging gaming and cinema viewing in one fluid motion.

Ground Zeroes immediately follows the story of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. For those who haven't played the PSP port game, worry not, Ground Zeroes offers backstory and Paz's diary to acclimate new comers. However, the knowledge of the prequel would make the short game more sympathetic. One thing that differs significantly is the tone, while Peace Walker wasn't exactly all sunshine and rainbow, Ground Zeroes is detectably more somber and brutal.

The size of the map is relatively large compared to areas from previous games; it also erases the transition between regions smoothly, although this scale is not nearly enough for a whole game. Fortunately, there are plenty of effects at play; lighting and rain effects are splendid. It presents glossy texture, well defined facial feature and smooth movement animation while using very little loading time. These graphical prowess converses well into events, the superb editing ensures that there's barely any cut or shift between scenes.

HUD has seen a bit of modification, map as well as on-screen display are presented in real time. Big Boss can mark targets or points of interest which is relayed to in-game visual. The mark system is rather similar to Batman Arkham's detective vision, although marked targets can only be sighted when Big Boss is stationary. The graphic is refined to more accommodate tactical gameplay, its only shortcomings are plastic grass and occasional pop-up in Xbox 360, but they are minor hindrances at best.

There are practically small selection of content, the story campaign and only several other side missions. The amount of gameplay featured in Ground Zeroes is just the bare essential. Basic such as hiding using covers or neutralizing enemies is taught in simple tutorials. Elements provide more interactions as different time will affect how well they can detect Big Boss; they will also react accordingly depending on the nature of the mission.

More advanced tactics and combat are available if players are willing to search deeper, but the arsenal is limited. There's bound to be more in the future as Kojima tends to create more opportunity to tackle challenges, although with such transformation in tone, there might be less comical methods. The use of helicopter extraction also proves that Phantom Pain could support simulation gameplay like Mother Base in Peace Walker.

One of the more distinguished changes in Ground Zeroes is Kiefer Sutherland as Big Boss. David Hayter has been the trademark voice of Snake for years, while it may have been for the best as Sutherland's voice fit the gritty vibe, it will be awkward for Metal Gear fans at first. Sound effects are familiar; the tracks are subtle yet powerful.

Paz's tapes from Peace Walker can be heard here as well, these honest diaries are cheerful yet also painful as she's torn between her duty and emotions. Despite the short cutscenes, everyone does an excellent performance. The sad song "Here's to You" is icing on the cake. It's a short-lived experience, but nothing less than an emotionally moving one.

The game only provides two hours of campaign, it has few others side ops, but since the setting is rehearsed in the same place, it might feel too confining. Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is an odd one, the story is undeniably brilliant, even more so considering its brief existence, but it can't be considered a full game as it's not meant to be as such. It is, by the series comparison, the equivalent of prologue and extra VR missions.

However, there's alot to like here and that's the reason why I'm not blasting this game. The main campaign has a good future if this is the type of game we'll be playing. I loved how everything was done and it came together. Plus, 30 dollars, while high, isn't as high as it once was. If this game was still 40 dollars, I would have given it a zero. But the fact still remains that something that should have been a downloadable only game for about 20 bucks was released as a full title. There's also something to be said about Kiefer Sutherland playing Snake. While he wasn't bad, it just isn't the same as with David Hayter. He WAS Snake and taking him away from the character that made his name is just sad. Plus it just sounds so wrong not to hear the regular Snake voice we've all grown to love. The decision has been made but I can already tell you it was a bad one. Expand

You can also you a various array of vehicles to get anywhere you want on the map if you prefer going guns blazing.

That all being said the biggest problem with this game is it's length. If you take your time on the main mission and collect all the XOF patches and rescue all the prisoners you can finish it in about 3 hours. But on my first run I ended up finishing it in an hour. There are some extra side missions that are set on the same map but they're only there as an extra mode and don't really offer anything different since it's all on the same map, with the exception of Deja Vu mode where you have to recreate scene's from previous MGS games by getting poses and camera exactly right.

All in all you can cover everything in the game in about 5 hours, and honestly at the price they're asking for, I cannot recommend buying this game. If you're interested in the game, rent it. That's the nicest advice I can offer. Otherwise you're best waiting for The Phantom Pain.

Taken as a game, it's a FANTASTIC mission and if this is what MGSV wants to be, then hell yes I'm on board. The side ops really show the diversity Kojima is going for here, and even the basic mission lends itself to a lot of replays through difficulty modes and unlocks, and even score if you are into it. However, that's all it is. One mission and a few variants thereof, and as robust as the interaction with it is, it simply isn't more than that. The PS version is the one to get if you decide to spend though, as it has an additional mission and in pickings this slim that really is to your benefit.

Want to whet your appetite for V? This will do it. But if you wanted a game to tide you over, or to provide bang for your buck, this simply is not it. Quality here simply cannot gloss over how little of it there is.

Okay this isn't the full game but it's priced $30 and from what I've played you'll need around 8 hours to beat the content of the game without replaying anything ! With that production value, I'd say it's quite a bargain given that most full priced games come with a solo experience even shorter than that... And for the achiever type, you'll have plenty of things to do.

The graphical fidelity and line of sight draw distance is probably the best I've seen on the PS4 so far. It feels a little less MGS and a little more Splinter Cell though. It feels a little less MGS and a little more Splinter Cell though. We all know the game is short but it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that has looked up this game before purchasing it though. There is a fair amount of time you can spend with this game doing missions on Hard, collecting everything (XOF patches and cassette tapes) and completing specific challenges such as "Spot every enemy in the shortest amount of time" which does add some hours of replay.
There is a funny Easter Egg which I won't spoil at the end of one of the side missions if you get an "S" ranking and it is classic Kojima. The thing I missed the most from MGS4 was the active camo, or any camo for that matter. It's just a rubber suit? Hopefully the Phantom Pain will address this and give us more than a cutscene at the beginning and one at the end.
The only reason I'm not giving this game a 9 or 10 is not because of the length of the game... I knew it was short before I purchased it, but the price for the length. 30$ is 15$ too much. There are a few noticable clippings in the game such as when you're carrying somebody over your shoulders your arm tends to reach through their body and even though it's an "open world" it is very clear how the devs want you to play through the game... with a stun gun and on your belly. I enjoyed the game and you will to, but just know you're getting 15$ ripped off.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is not what the fans of the series wanted. The MGS games had always focused on having a long campaign mode, well written story and amazing boss fights, not replaying the same small level over and over again.

This game has none of what makes MGS great, the campaign can be cleared in about 40 minutes give or take, almost no story, regenerative health and not a single boss fight.

The enemy AI in general is pretty piss poor. You can kill a guy from far away, another one will run up to that exact spot and start shooting at you, you can easily kill him (the enemies don't take cover usually), and then do that to the next guy, and the next, and the next, you can basically keep doing that until you run out of bullets.

Once you are out, you can just hang of a ledge somewhere for an infinite amount of time and the enemies will NEVER find you as long as you are not in their direct line of sight, and if they DO find you, don't worry, it's very hard to die in this game now because they replaced normal health with regenerative health, you can now go full Rambo on your opponents, and then just hide in a corner for 30 seconds when the screen turns read. You can also tag enemies and see them through walls for some reason.

All in all this is a demo, and a poor demo at that. It's short, it's small, and it costs $30, you'd be better off buying a game like Dishonored or any of the Splinter Cell games, basically anything you haven't played yet, I guarantee that you'll have a better experience with it than Ground Zeroes.

If i go to the movies, i don't complain that i paid the same price for a 90 minute masterpiece than a 2 and a half hour borefest.

That's the case with Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. Yes, the main mission (NOT the whole game) is very short. Also, the ending is disappointing and unfulfilling. However, those are the only two flaws in a game that has some of the best stealth mechanics

However, those are the only two flaws in a game that has some of the best stealth mechanics in recent memory. It's fun, challenging and engaging. Also, contrary to what people say, if you are one of those people that likes to get 100% in games, then you get a bang for your buck here. The missions are varied and getting the best rating demands a lot of replays.

So yeah, i liked this game. I can assure you, if this was a $15 downloadable game, everyone would be giving it 10's.

I've been a big fan of the series since the PlayStation One debut (I know there were earlier ones, I'm not counting them). Metal Gear games don't come out often, but when they do they're something special. Ground Zeroes is a prologue to the upcoming full game The Phantom Pain. It looks and plays fantastic and I think that any fan of Metal Gear's classic stealth gameplay will enjoy it.

The question I hear a lot is why this title is priced at $29.99. My first run lasted about 80 minutes and in the end I unlocked side missions, weapons, and a new Hard mode. And I'm going back to play it some more because it's that good. I suspect that I will play the heck out of it while I wait for Phantom Pain to come out and I'm glad they released this to tide me over until early 2015. It's worth the 30 dollars for me. I'd rather drop a title from my wish list to make space in my budget than to miss this prologue (sorry, Titanfall). I don't think I'd make a habit out of spending 30 dollars for prologues, but this is a special case for me. I'm glad I picked it up.

Ground Zeroes does everything it was set out to do: Give a taste of the new FOX engine and open world gameplay. Ground Zeroes does these things very well. The animations and graphics are a huge upgrade over MGS:4. The only thing I would say was strange was the exclusion of the cardboard box, but, I cannot penalize the game because it doesn't have an item. Ground Zeroes definitely deserves a 10.

There is no way a 30€ videogame should last from 10 minutes to 2 hours. It's a shame, and I think that the only deal here is to cheat the hand that feeds Konami: the players. This game is a beta or a demo of Phantom Pain, and indeed is a pain in the ass this kind of business.

Don't buy this game. Rent it for a day.

I own every MGS and every game Kojima has ever made (including Policenauts, Snacher, etc)

Now that we've covered the fact that this is a $30 demo and a shameless cash-grab that will undoubtedly be a huge tarnish on the otherwise amazing reputation of our beloved Kojima, let's move on to all of the changes to the game itself.

0.) NO CODEC! - You know that little communication radio? The small feature that let you call people, save games, get help, get hints, hear funny conversations, etc? You know, the little thing that has been in EVERY major MGS release? Well now it's in ALMOST every major MGS release. The codec is gone.

1.) No more camo - You remember that small "active camouflage" mechanic in MGS4? You know, the little mechanic that basically defined the series? Yeah, well that's gone. And not just it, the entire camouflage concept all together.

2.) Inventory - The simple, streamlined inventory that was perfected over generations of MGS' is just gone. Period. The simple HUD inventory that would momentarily paused the game while you accessed it has been replaced with an ultra-generic D-PAD option we've seen in so many other games. It also doesn't pause the game. This is a lot more irritating than you'd think.

3.) Health/Stamina gauges - It turns out that we didn't need these either. MGS has now joined the ranks of health-less, stamina-less, auto-regenerating shooters. How progressive.

4.) Rations/Drugs - Naturally, without a concern for health or energy, we don't really need rations or medications anymore, right? So if you're looking for that fix of Diazepam and a warm can of rations, you've come to the wrong place.

5.) Combat - Among other things, the CQC system we've gotten used to over the years has also been modified with an unusual *MENU* that appears when subduing an enemy in combat. The ability to stick to walls has also been altered.

6.) No more mini-map - This is a bigger deal than it sounds. If you remember, the mini-map showed you the visual field of the enemies in addition to navigating complex areas. Now to access your map it requires going into an entirely different screen.

7.) No Hiding - No more hiding in trash-cans or closets. If you're trying to get away from an enemy your only option is to run.. or lay on your belly.

8.) No easter-eggs - This is a huge one. This is an ENTIRE GAME without any obvious/interesting easter-eggs, funny messages, clever conversations, entertaining posters or weird magazines.

9.) Super-Generic Level - There is only ONE TINY MAP IN THIS ENTIRE GAME. It's a generic, open military base with no buildings, no interesting hiding spots, nothing.

10.) No saving - Autosaves only.

11.) No more money - This means no more Drebin, no more purchasing guns or items and no more upgrading.

12.) No card-board box - What more do I need to say about this one?

I hate to use the word "fanboy," but the people who are saying things like "the negative comments clearly come from people who have never played a metal gear game in there life" [sic] or operating on the "if you don't agree with me you're wrong" -mentality might have a *tiny* bit of bias :).
