    This is a good game with major flaws. Fortunately the combat and rover exploration portion of the game-play is quite good and represents the majority of the game. Everyone knows animations are hilariously bad, and I'll get to that later.

    Biggest negatives are:
    1. huge lack of music in the game, and key signature moments (say becoming a Spectre in ME1, or getting the Normandy) -- the equivalents in ME4 are very brief casual affairs with no music. This is very disappointing for me, and even the memorable space exploration music is so subdued and ambient, you have to crank the sliders to even hear it.
    2. The space exploration, while pretty, transitions take too long, aren't skipable, and there is very little of interest. Very half-baked and incomplete. Sometimes you find minerals or a derelict ship/satellite. Scanning planets is briefer than the ME2 system, only because there is literally only 0 or 1 anomalies per planet (mostly 0). Feels empty.
    3. Character/Animation system. Looks like Bioware moved from the expensive motion captured method to procedural animations. The characters are a real step back, character generation is limited. We're talking worse than Skyrim here. Eyes looks largely flat and dead, and when the lead character smiles she looks like Jack Nicholson in the Shining.
    4. Crafting, research, scanning -- it seems to be a lot of work to do everything needed to research and craft items, and by the time you are able to do so, you end up looting superior items and not needing to craft at all. Still I'm still in the first quarter of the game. Feels like crafting is to fill gaps, but the pacing feels bad and difficult in the beginning, possibly due to the overwhelming amount of choice. So I'm saving it for when I need it.

    Overall the game is fun and engaging, but there are several parts of the game that feel undercooked. While animations are genuinely pretty bad, I can overlook some of that. But I'd say if Bioware is listening, music and space exploration needs more work and balancing. Maybe more planets that you can rover on.    … Expand

    Finally had the chance to play this game for the first time with all the patches. It's a good first game. if they had created a new IP instead of Mass Effect, it would've been compared favourably with the first Mass Effect.

    This game succeed in combat and driving simulation. A few narrative gems exists in the plot like Kadaran main quest. I wish those gems had been extended to take over the main plot.

    Writing wise, there is a ton of rehash. A lot of "this is just a crappier version of the original." Lots of good political critique that fail to deliver entertainment value. Compare this to the original's balance between gripping narrative and morality lessons, it's quite clear new Bioware writers don't understand that the patrons giving them money deserve more than a peach that they didn't sign up for.

    I still like my idea of Mass Effect 4 more. Reapers are in Andromeda, Shepard and crew goes there through a super relay, capable of transport. Story completely and directly inherits from the trilogy with all the fan favourites.    … Expand

The game's mediocrity comes from its half-baked story, bad pacing, and uninteresting characters. There are some good moments but they're few and far between. Much of the game feels empty and unfulfilled. As for the characters, Lexi, Drack, and Vetra were the only ones who caught my interest, and even they left me wanting for more. Liam and Cora are awful: Liam's always talking about how he's crying about this or that; Cora likes to drone on about her asari training. Jaal is alright but I feel like he and Liam were written because of this absurd cultural movement to feminize men. Liam's always crying and saying its okay to cry and Jaal's always talking about his feelings, because he's so liberated. Peebee is annoying. She's always saying weird and awkward things that just feel out of place. She lacks depth and never really comes together. The Mass Effect series is about story and characters. That's what makes it great. This game focuses far, far too much on exploration and discovery. It's stretched so thin that none of it feels compelling. I'm disappointed.… Expand

    I don't get all the hate. I nearly didn't buy this because of all the hate and bad reviews. Lucky I chose to ignore them. Is it perfect? No, the facial animations are distracting but I find them quite funny. Is the game rubbish? No. The gunfights and basic game play are well done. People that are giving this game a 0 are simply trolling it seems. They state they like certain aspects yetI don't get all the hate. I nearly didn't buy this because of all the hate and bad reviews. This game seems to suffer the same fate as COD and Assassins Creed. I don't think giving a game 0 is a fair review. I'm an avid Mass Effect fan. This game is a nice offshoot to the old series. I'm having fun with this game. It seems the patch fixed all of the bugs people complained about. I haven't encountered any at all 15 hours in! Its a slow starter but once you get past prologue its great. Not everyone will love this game but its a good t=game for me, and I feel many others. The average score is slowly getting higher which should tell you that the people that have actually played the game are weighing into the debate. Get the game and make your own decision, Don't be swayed by all these negative scores, many of which it seems haven't played the game at all.… Expand

    Its not great, but its certainly not as bad as everyone is claiming. The facial animations are awful. its true, its a major step backwards. The writing is exactly the same as every other recent bioware game - its not got the more mature / developed plot of Witcher 3.

    But the game play is fun, the story is essentially on par w/ other Mass effect games. If you liked the other games,    Its not great, but its certainly not as bad as everyone is claiming.     Even though I'm writing this review in 2019, I played this game at launch and I played through it at least 3 or 4 times. There were numerous technical issues, nothing truly major that I experienced though other than of course the facial animations of some characters.

    Graphically I thought it looked beautiful, however was disappointed many aliens such as the Asari used the same 2 or 3 models just with different textures applied. Whereas previous Mass Effect games may have used the same models at times, but they had enough varieties of models spread though out that it was unnoticeable.

    Personally I enjoyed the story, especially the final battle which I think is more how the final battle of Mass Effect 3 should've turned out. That being said there were story threads that were left open for DLCs instead of wrapping the story up properly. Especially the whole thing with the Quarian arc, which unfortunately is a DLC we'll never get to see.

    Ultimately a flawed game, but still a fun time for fans of Mass Effect or Sci-Fi in general that don't need things to be perfect.    … Expand

    Mass Effect Andromeda is not a bad game. Having spent 69.5 hours in its campaign and 5 more in multiplayer, I mostly enjoyed my time. Hell, if I didn't, I wouldn't have played this long. The game's got good graphics (especially the vistas), improved combat and this advertised sense of    Considering all the hate this game's got, I've decided to write a few words in its defense.

    Mass Effect Andromeda is not a bad game. Having spent 69.5 hours in its campaign and 5 more in multiplayer, I mostly enjoyed my time. Hell, if I didn't, I wouldn't have played this long. The game's got good graphics (especially the vistas), improved combat and this advertised sense of exploration, of being a pioneer. And it works. While the original trilogy was about a massively populated universe where humans are just another race, in Andromeda the whole Milky Way expedition is around 100.000 souls, the resources are scarce, and it's up to you to find a new home.

    Now I can't deny Andromeda also has plenty of issues, which I would structure into three main categories.

    Gameplay:
    While the combat has become much more fluid and agile with the welcome addition of jump jets, I found it irritating how close the camera was to the character with weapons drawn, severely limiting the field of view. Some other decisions like having to leave the planet every time you board the Tempest, some abilities dependent on power cells, and the lack of tactical pause are also questionable.

    Story:
    Let's be honest, the old ME games could not boast any original story. It was just a dude assembling forces to fight giant space prawns. For 3 games straight. Here the main plot mostly mirrors the first game, with the protagonist being the only one able to interface with some derelict tech from an ancient race (Protheans/Jaardan) while fighting enemies who represent a much larger ominous force (Reapers/Kett). While things are pretty straightforward, the game does manage to set up things nicely for the much larger populated galaxy with the huge Kett empire lurking within. I would say, however, that the antagonist is very boring, there was plenty of cringy dialogue, there could have been more original races, and that the squadmate roster is inferior compared to the old games.

    Engine:
    I bought the game in version 1.10, with improved animations and fixed bugs. There still were occasional crashes, freezes, glitched animations and quests, but it wasn't really bothersome. I do imagine though, that if these were much more abundant at game's launch, I would have been pissed.

    To sum up, the fact that ME Andromeda was basically broken at launch is inexcusable for any AAA blockbuster and a continuation of a popular franchise, and I understand where the hate was coming from. Still, in its current state and for the current price (got it for like 20$) it's well worth picking up. If you are a fan of the old MEs, or RPG's and Sci-Fi in general, I would honestly recommend it.    … Expand

    I really loved the first 3 Games, esp. ME3. Everything was perfect in this Game: Soundtrack, cool graphics, exciting Action, not too complex RPG Elements, fascinating story, great Characters with also great voice actors and animations. With ME:A you should tear down your expectations regarding these points. It's still a good game, and i love being in that universe but IMO it's onlyI really loved the first 3 Games, esp. ME3. Everything was perfect in this Game: Soundtrack, cool graphics, exciting Action, not too complex RPG Elements, fascinating story, great Characters with also great voice actors and animations. With ME:A you should tear down your expectations regarding these points. It's still a good game, and i love being in that universe but IMO it's only average, when you compare it with ME3. Sad to say this, but EA should have kept the original ME Team for developing such an important franchise, instead of experimenting with a new staff.… Expand

    I'm about 70 hours in and I'm really liking it so far. The combat is fantastic, which I know is not the reason anyone buys a Bioware game, but it doesn't make it not true. Is it polished? Not at all. There was a lot of work left unfinished and it's buggy, but that doesn't make it a terrible game. The writing isn't on par with the first three, but it's not the dumpster fire that a lot ofI'm about 70 hours in and I'm really liking it so far.     I really question how people can justify anything under a 5 on this game. I understand that it may not be as good as the first installments but come on guys. This has enough of the ingredients to enjoy regardless of whether you're playing it for the first time or you're a seasoned vet. Keyboard warriors in full effect with this one.

They are exceptions though - they don't persist constantly throughout the game. Anyone focused solely on them has is merely parroting what's popular on the internet. Did I hope for better? Yes.     Having now finished the game, I'll leave my original rating of 7. There's plenty to do here, and gameplay is much more satisfying than the negative reviews will acknowledge. It's not a stellar entry or the space exploration game I keep waiting for. But, it's so far from the 4.8 user average currently showing in metacritic that it's comical. I think it's time to start verifying that the people writing reviews have actual played the game (watched the movie/read the book/used the product/etc). I tell my kids to try things, truly try them, before they make up their minds about whether or not they like them. My sense anymore is that reviews are regurgitating popular sentiment on the Internet or expressing a dislike of superficial, easily observed, features of something without actually sampling it (i.e. ewwww, it looks gross therefore it must be gross).    … Expand

    After a full play through here is my take. Not sure why all the hate, it's a good game but it could have been great. One of the glaring problems is frostbite the game engine. The mechanics are clunky at times and under whelming ad to that it hammers on ps4 hardware and fans even though other titles with better graphics run easier on it. Facial and body mechanics were poorly done and lacking. The general story was good and enjoyable. More decision impact on the story would have been nice. I tire of Bioware pushing the lgbt stuff so hard every game, it doesn't need to be so "In your face" they need to chill a little. A little more content would have been nice though I don't feel robbed with what I got, with all the star systems available there was room. It's hardly a POS like Dragon Age II was but was still below standard as triple A title. Even with all the negatives i still enjoyed it and look forward to improvement on the next Mass Effect title.… Expand

Even more than that, the story and theAfter 52 hours, Mass Effect: Andromeda is quite perhaps the biggest fluctuations of enjoyment I've ever had. In some points, I was genuinely having a good time toying with the revamped combat and exploration and other times I am absolutely apalled at its technical state, with the stilted and uncomfortable facial animations sadly ringing true. Even more than that, the story and the characters that participate in it are of a lower quality than what we have come to expect from perhaps the greatest trilogy in gaming. Make no mistake, this still feels like Mass Effect with the core components present, but it is also the weakest of them.

    Taking control of Ryder, players venture into the Andromeda Galaxy in hopes of starting a new life with the Milky Way races. The first hours don't leave a very good impression, swapping smart and intelligent dialogue of the games before with hammy, awkward dialogue that would be more right at home with an FX drama/comedy. It's not bad, and it's certainly allowed to be different from Shepard's adventures, but none of the characters made as much of an impact as Garrus, Liara, or Legion did and before anyone says "Well Shepard had 3 games!", this game is easily twice as long as any of the games in the Original Trilogy. It's not a matter of length, it's a matter how effectively you use that time. The story eventually goes somewhere and picks up, but it's more in the realm of movie blockbuster, with really predictable threads and a fairly cookie cutter villain. The story and dialogue is further hampered by the technical issues, none that made it unplayable, but definitely noticeable. If anything, you'll enjoy Andromeda's length and where it takes you. And the aforementioned facial animations are back, and they are quite sub-par. It doesn't bother me as much it did others, but when you combine that with dialogue that seldom delivers, it really gets to you.

    The main focus this time seems to revolve around exploration and combat, both of which are significantly better. Classes are more or less done away with and instead you are allowed to mix and match however you please among the original 6 classes with a newly added one. The addition of the jump jet keeps the action frantic. It's amazingly still Mass Effect, but definitely evolved. The exploration also has seen a boost with absolutely large worlds to explore (though there aren't as much as you might think). Traversing with the nomad is leagues better than the mako and it always was entertaining if not for the fact that fetch quests are in abundance and most are as unengaging as the name implies. Overall, the quests flow more in the vein of Dragon Age: Inquisition than the Original Trilogy, and that's a damn shame. In addition, the menus are clunky and comparing equipment is a chore. The loyalty missions are what we've come to expect from a Mass Effect game, but it's the characters that sell it decently, rather than great.

    It's important to also note that the developers of the Original Trilogy did not work on Andromeda, and it shows. The games is absolutely gorgeous while still retaining its large scale, but are inhabited by quests that do little more than mediocrity The characters (while interesting) aren't as memorable, and the plot (which is supposed to be a standalone and set a foundation for future titles) is only good enough instead of breaking the mold. Despite my criticisms, I very much enjoyed exploring the galaxy map (its rendition of Uncharted Worlds is amazing), combat and exploration are great, and the game is gorgeous. However, there is no denying that Andromeda is disappointing, not because it's a bad Mass Effect game, but because it stumbles in key components that takes any game beyond great. As it stands Andromeda is merely decent, a stepback from the constant amazing the OT delivered. This is not Shepard's favorite game in the Citadel.    … Expand

    It isn't bad. The action and style is still good. My problem is there was not enough interesting quests and stuff to motivate me to finish it. They all got boring and felt like unwanted filler. Also it was annoying how your actions in the last few games doesn't affect this one like they never happened.

    As a Mass effect fan, this was sad that it didn't grab my interest like the other games.

    I was expecting very little after the snore fest that was the entirety of Mass Effect 3 (expect the ending, I genuinely liked the original ending and hate that they caved in to the whiny, self-entitled crybabies that ruined it by making them change it.) and after the utter disappointment that was Dragon Age: Inquisition, and I think that is why I enjoy Mass Effect: Andromeda. Yes, I have hit some of the character model animation glitches, arms flailing, eyes rolling sideways until it is all white, a dead character glitched in to the ground that I can not revive, etc. But, aside from that, I enjoy the story they were trying to impart, even though it seems the writers lacked the proper ability to convey it. Is this a perfect game? No, not by any stretch of the imagination. But they are working to make it better, and I commend them for it. Publishers make the developers send the game to print by a deadline, and sometimes they are not finished. But it is what the developer does after the game is sent to print that matters at that point. We get day zero and day one patches, or early patches like what ME:A is getting soon to fix things they did not have time to address because of a deadline. I am willing to give this game a chance because of that.… Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have almost finished this game and I'm willingly going to play again. The issue with this game, besides the graphical glitches which can be horrifying if using the default or just using an unedited pre-set head, is the same issue I have with Dragon Age Inquisition when you start out. That issue is a boring and overly long first act. Things really do kick up after you escape the Archon for the first time and characters start to open up the exact same way they did in Dragon Age.

    I actually blame the writers for the dull characters since most of them seem to have written characters the exact same way in, you guessed it, Dragon Age Inquisition. This is on the other hand and change of form for the Mass Effect franchise that not a lot of fans don't like, and it also feels like a reboot of the first 2 games smashed together which I admit was something I had already thought before playing but those thoughts were only reinforced. I felt for each of the characters after the first act, I wanted to see them succeed and not get hurt even though I know they are fictional. And I have to give the writers credit since I didn't give a **** about a lot of characters from Dragon Age Inquisition.

    There are issues with the game running like crap sometimes for seemingly no reason at all. It could either be in a field of grass on a planet or in the Tempest, it will just start to chug near the end of the second act. Also, the facial animations, although some of them might have been fixed since I saw some online that I never saw in game, it's unacceptable that they would focus so hard on the combat to leave the most basics part of the game so ****ty.

    Speaking of combat it is great. Similar to MGSV where the gameplay was it's saving grace, for me at the very least, Mass Effect Andromeda's combat is good and I didn't even take advantage of all of the gimmicks they added. It's fun and I don't complain when I have to fight in a quest or just in the story. I feel like a badass without trying too hard and not having to fight every little thing.

    Most of my complaints can be fixed with a few patches so maybe after it's all done I can feel good about giving them a 8 or 9 but pretty worlds, convincing characters, and tight combat doesn't make up for the fact that there are tons of problems and BioWare should have maybe delayed the game again to iron them out instead of going with the build that they tested over the holidays.    … Expand

    It's perhaps the biggest and most expensive to produce 7/10 game there is. After patches, that is, because before 1.06 it was unplayable. Story is slow and mediocre, combat is repetitive and kind of tedious, there's definitely too much pointless running around (Kadara and the elevator, FFS). In general it's a decent game, but it's much, much, much below expectations.

    I'll say just a few words how I feel about this so called Mass Effect game.

    Take Mass effect 2 and 3's AI - EDI.. Interesting, human-like and a great squadmate addition to the game. You can see throughout the both games its character development, how it's trying to understand humans (organics you might say) and at the end even how it's falling in love with Joker. And now ME:A's AI -    I'll say just a few words how I feel about this so called Mass Effect game.

    Take Mass effect 2 and 3's AI - EDI.. Interesting, human-like and a great squadmate addition to the game. You can see throughout the both games its character development, how it's trying to understand humans (organics you might say) and at the end even how it's falling in love with Joker.

    And now ME:A's AI - SAM.. Overall boring, flat and definitely one of the most annoying things about the game. How it constantly reminds you that you can mine here and there or that you have nonexistent emails in your mailbox or fake pending vidcalls. You can't see any character development whatsoever even though the game reminds you like 2 or 3 times that SAM is learning about human feelings and such.

    That would be my view of ME:A. Take it as you see fit. 7/10. (7/10 because of the amazing combat system, without it it would be just 5/10, which I'm really sad to say taking in consideration that it's Mass Effect and a Bioware game even)    … Expand

    Unfortunately the very first step of the game is also one of the most disappointing. There really is no excuse here. 5 or 6 years development time and we have been given a truly awful character creator. It is massively limited by not allowing the player to actually create a face like Fallout 4 does for example, but simply provides around 10 increasingly terrible looking presets for the player to choose which they can then only change some dimensions and positions on. For a game considered to have strong RPG elements this is of course very damaging. What is a welcome idea is that the player is able to edit their characters sibling as well to dictate their in game appearance which in turn, generates what their father, the original Ryder looks like. But of course, this good idea is also stifled by the hugely simplistic creator.

    Not long after this crushing disappointment and confusion as to how any dev could actually sign off on this creator and believe it is ok, the game opens very well in my opinion. In a throwback to the original ME, the player has a brief intro to their situation in deep space and are then quickly thrust onto a planet which turns out to be very hostile. This introduces the player to the much improved and enjoyable combat system, one of the squad mates and a taste of the, pretty stunning environments the player can expect from the rest of the game.

    After that the game properly opens up and really does get better and better as you go through it. As I have mentioned the planets and environments are beautiful but unfortunately are not matched by the character models with human characters in particular being very disappointing and lacking in detail. Out of the many negative claims about the game prior to release, the dead eyes of human characters is one that was very true, a real shame given that some of the alien characters look great.

    This, regrettably, brings me onto one of the worst, most bizarre design decisions/omissions I have ever seen. So whilst the crafting system is decent, essentially you are only ever crafting gear for yourself as Bioware has taken the very strange decision not to allow players to gear squad mates AT ALL. Quite unbelievable that a game in any series can regress this far considering it was something that you could do in the original ME. Yes they also strangely limited choices in the follow up OT games but now there is nothing at all. Not allowing the equipping of squad mates is just baffling, and it is hard to see any reasoning behind a decision to limit the player in this way. Personally I had hoped not only to be able to equip them, but to be actually able to edit them in game as well, so my disappointment was confounded by having no options whatsoever here.

    In a lot of ways it’s like the devs seem to have assumed that any sort of micromanagement, whether regarding squad mates or planets, is a bad thing. I would wholeheartedly disagree with that and would take some micromanagement over what we have been given. For a game such as MEA it adds control and diverse experiences for each player.

    However unlikely, I hope that some of the most glaring issues are somehow fixed or enhanced with future patches. For now all the issues in the game do unfortunately pull it down from being great but happily not quite to the point of completely ruining it.

    It’s much closer than I would have liked but I think the good points just about outweighing the bad. I understand why many have been left disappointed as expectations were very high. I am in the same boat and have been left disappointed and frustrated at many aspects of the game. However focusing on the strong points of MEA has allowed me to enjoy my time with it a lot, and with aforementioned future fixes/enhancements I hope for, along with some sizeable DLC, MEA could still be great.     Combat is OK, but not great. The cover system seems unfinished and on some areas there is virtually no viable cover available, making the battles pretty one sided. There is something oddly clunky about going in and out of cover as well, mostly because it is not always obvious what is a cover and what is not. I haven't messed around with the skills that much yet, but they seem to work as expected.

    Graphics is a major gripe for lot of the red naysayers, and let's be honest, the animations look horrible. Coming from titles like Horizon, it's like looking at a PS3 game. The faces are just plain bad, and there is no excuse for that considering you spend 40% of your time looking at one.

    The exploration is a bit of a hit and miss. On one hand, you are constantly wondering what you're going to encounter, but on the other hand, the free space exploration is dumbed down to pointless. The mini game of resource farming from planets is really, really, pointless from space, and mining on the rover is a huge pain. But, I like diving into new areas, and see what I can find, and that part is done well in this game.

    Besides this, there are game crashing bugs riddled across the board, that are frustrating. Luckily I've only had a couple of minutes off roll-back so far, but I'm saving a great deal more often after crash number five.    … Expand

I get that the paragon and renegade system might be “too Shepard” but nevertheless that system added depth and weight to each choice as well as consequence. In MA: Andromeda you will usually have 3 or 4 options varying from rational, emotional, or sarcastic. The problem is you can pretty much choose whatever you want but everything still plays out the same. This seems like it will make the player not care at all about what they say, which is a HUGE part of the Mass Effect series, and in my opinion what made Mass Effect Mass Effect. On the other hand I think the combat will be what saves this game. It’s fun, fluid and with the large amount of biotics, combat can be tailored to any play style. Enemies are quite challenging. I, as well as other reviewers from what I have seen have died a few times just on the tutorial planet. When it comes down to it Mass Effect Andromeda is nowhere near the greatness of the original trilogy and can unfortunately will probably be compared to being the “Phantom Menace” of the Mass Effect saga. If you are a long time Mass Effect fan looking for a evolution of the Mass Effect series this is not where you want to look. However, if all you need is more Mass Effect, Mass Effect Andromeda will be totally adequate.… Expand

    First of all I concluded it with 40% (without much effort), and other 60% of game is destined for secondary mission (boring missions). MEA has great graphics and gameplay content but storyline's sometimes is confused a lot.....

Fantastic atmosphere, strong and varied gameplay, graphics are for the most part great, a good variety of different sidequests and a main story with lots of meaning. Not as good as Mass Effect 1 and 2, but still solid. The downside is humas character animations andA pretty good game, that many loves to hate before even playing the majority of it...     i buy this game only to play multiplayer but there are many glitch and bugs in multiplayer. Sometimes this game can cause my ps4 to become no sound any more but when I close the game application, my ps4 bad normal again, this game is very broken to play online even more worse than ubisoft game like division.Beware for any person who want to buy this game for multiplayer

    Not amazing, not bad. Somewhere in the 'meh its okay' range. Faces and animations are a little off but the overall size and variety of the universe and gameplay mechanics give a good gameplay experience overall. As long as you can look past weird facial expressions you can enjoy it.

    As a die hard Mass Effect fan, there is a lot to nitpick about this game as far as their approach and presentation of the world and lore we've been given over the years with the original trilogy...however, that being said, the gameplay is incredibly fun and well done. Multiple trophies were bugged and some ridiculous checkpoints made for just a couple frustrations, but overall this game was fun to just play.… Expand

    - Annoying travelling to and from the Nexus, Tempest for conversation for just simple tasks. They could vidcon instead of travelling to nexus to talk to Director addison or certain people sometimes and it made travelling feel like a chore.
    - The andromeda galaxy needed more alien cultures.
    - Ugly female and male presets in character creations.
    - Sara Ryder could have been prettier if not for those SJW's

    I'm not as affected by the animation issues as I grew up with 90s and early 2000's gaming which had little to no facial animations,

    But I also miss the cool drop landing in ME3 where you land from a dropship straight into battle. It was an epic feeling which you don't get in Andromeda. It's just the long and slow animations of flying off and landing constantly. It was cool at first, but gets tiring.

    5- Enjoyable multiplayer.

    The bad:
    1- It badly failed to capture the magnificent feeling of exploring what is (to us at least) uncharted area and focused on the size of the game and a huge number of silly tasks you can do.
    2- the writing: While I listened carefully to most of the conversations in the trilogy, I find myself skipping them here. They are just uninteresting and plain dull.
    3- Characters (writing as well): I had a genuine emotional attachment to Miranda, Jack, Mordin and many others in the trilogy... but I have zero interest in anyone (Peebee might be a tad better). Even the AI Sam is lacklustre at best in comparison to Edi.
    4- The open-world set-up is starting to burden new games unless it's very well made (the Witcher as a brilliant example again) and I'd take a well written linear old fashioned game over a repetitive massive open-world one with a modular feeling.
    5- As a summary, I'd say the game failed in terms of story, writing, and directing especially in comparison to the trilogy and recent games.    … Expand

    To start off    I have a confession to make, this was my first Mass Effect game so my opinion on the game may not be as polarizing as some. So for me, I don’t have the massive disappointment that Mass Effect 2 (regarded as one of the greatest games of all time) turned into this. For me personally, I am coming into this game fresh and so I did my best to keep an open mind about this game.

    To start off this game got lambasted with mockery on how the facial animations looked which I don’t think that’s fair and I think its kind of tacky. I try to look at it like games like Uncharted 4 have spoiled us. I always try to do my best to not compare games other games because I don’t think its fair.

    Normally I like to talk about the story a little bit in these “reviews” but for this game, I’m not going to bother because the story is forgettable. The characters themselves are also fairly forgettable as well. Although in traditional Bioware fashion, you do get to romance characters so that’s something you can do if you want to.

    Right at the start of the game, your first choice is to pick whether you want to be the male of female Ryder. They’re twins so your choice is Scott or Sara. I chose the male, Scott because I’m a guy and I almost always go with the character that best represents me in these scenarios. I know its boring but that’s just the way I play games.

    Bouncing back to the Romance options, the person I became most interested in was a character named Suvi. It’s not because the character was necessarily that great, I just liked her voice and more specifically the Scottish accent. Unfortunately, I discovered that Suvi can only be romanced by Sara so she was no longer an option. At that point, I switched focus and had to choose between a woman named Cora who was kind of manly and I don’t like her hair or Peebee who is an alien race and a very annoying character. I ended up going with Cora and as I got to know her a little bit better she kind of grew on me. I think it is important to note that the only reason I even did this was for the trophy. I don’t what it is but watching video game sex (or any animated sex) makes me uncomfortable. I think about the animators staying up late and working overtime just to animate the sex scene. It’s just weird.

    Ultimately what kept me playing this game was the shooting. Its a very well made third-person shooter. The shooting is tight the action is exciting and I have nothing but positive things to say about the combat. I genuinely had a good time playing this game because of the combat.

    I’m trying to think if this is a game that I would recommend. If you’re a fan of the mass effect series and you like Mass Effect because of the story and interesting characters. Stay away but if you’re in the market for a good third person shooter. Then yes, I would recommend picking this up.    … Expand

    I have been a fan of the Mass Effect series since the beginning. That being said, while this is not my fave of the series, I am still enjoying it and find it a welcome addition. Yes, it has its flaws, but it also has a lot going for it. The naysayers be damned. Check it out, it is worth it.

Definitely a letdown compared to the original ME trilogy - especially in regards to the technical aspects of the game. I'm actually enjoying the story and re-integrating myself back into the lore. Multiplayer continues to be a treat.

    The technical issues is where this game just fails for me They're glaring and really can't be ignored.. From the game locking up when cutscenes don't initiate properly, to horrible teammate AI, to the oft-memed facial animations and static eyes. I feel some of the same issues that plagued the original trilogy are still here and then some.

    Overall - I'm enjoying the game. But the glaring technical issues make me believed this is a rushed release - which is likely out of Bioware's hands as we know EA loves their money. It's a damn shame too. I also can't fathom how they added only two new species to the game. We're in a completely different galaxy.

    Multiplayer 9/10 for me though. Having a blast playing it with my buddies.    … Expand

    I've been playing this for well over 14 hours, so far, so good. Planetary exploration is much cooler
    with the view of the spaceship moving planet to planet. Ground exploration is FINALLY back. Missions are laid out very similar to how Dragon Age Inquisition is, with a select amount of large areas to explore and seems to work the same.

    Honestly, if you look at how Inquisition plays, just apply that to this.

    My only gripe was how the limited the loadout, powers system is now. Also, being unable to equip weapons from the menu is garbage. But I've seen worse mechanics in my almost 30 years of gaming so, I'll suck it up.

    Everyone is expecting way too much from games these days, ya'll haters need to calm down.

    After playing this for MANY hours, I've realized two things.

    1. AVOID THE FETCH QUESTS, most of them aren't really that rewarding, give you crap loot/credits/experience. Focus on doing the side missions related to your crew and improving the viability of planets. Space exploration is almost pointless, save for actually discovering the FIVE viable planets, after that mapping the stars get real boring.

    2. The story is a repeat of the 1st Mass Effect, sans the intriguing twist of the original. Yet the narrative isn't horrible, just that it lacks the charm of the ANY of the original trilogy. I felt like everything I did in Andromeda gave me that "been there, done that" kind of feeling.

Needless to say, I was quite frustrated as I played through the first dozen hours of the game.

    Once I reached about 33% completion, however, the tone of the game changed and it became a true successor to the original trilogy. The latter half of the game is much stronger than the first half and it eventually culminates in an exciting and satisfying finale that leaves plenty of room for sequels.

    I began a second play-through to see how it felt once I knew what I was doing and it was a LOT more streamlined and intuitive than my first fumbling steps in the Andromeda galaxy had been. Consensus: don't get discouraged. Andromeda has a rocky start for some but it gets much better as it progresses and is worth the effort. Pay attention to what the game is asking you to do and don't head off on your own too early or you may find yourself wondering what's going on. Fans of the original trilogy should come away with a positive experience overall and a desire to see what awaits Ryder and the crew of the Tempest.    … Expand

    (7.5/10) - Coming from a Bioware fan, Mass Effect Andromeda is an unpolished good game. It has issues, lots of them. Mainly I would point out:

    Facial animations that take away from what should have been emotional scenes; Walking animations of some characters; Loading (like how long do you have to stare at a door for it to open, sometimes so long that if there is a way around that    (7.5/10) - Coming from a Bioware fan, Mass Effect Andromeda is an unpolished good game. It has issues, lots of them. Mainly I would point out:

    Facial animations that take away from what should have been emotional scenes;

    Walking animations of some characters;

    Loading (like how long do you have to stare at a door for it to open, sometimes so long that if there is a way around that door you should probably take it. The loading moving around the galaxy map is ridiculous to the point you might not want to explore anymore.

    SAM talking about the temperature changes and mining console over and over again, sometimes seconds apart.

    Bugs, SO MANY BUGS. You can be talking with a guy and killed by an enemy mid conversation and get a corrupted save; you can be talking with a guy and he just walks over 30 feet away from you while in conversation. Doors just refuse to open unless you reload, landing animation loops. And severe hiccups in frame rate, sometimes freezing the game 0 fps for a few seconds.

    Controls seem very counterintuitive.

    Crafting seems overly complicated and severely limited by research points.

    I love companion stories, but I hate having to constantly finish a main quest, a planet and always have to go around the ship talking with everyone (sometimes multiple times) until they have nothing left to say except their usual greeting.

    On the positive side, the game is massive. Clocked in 72h to finish. Was impressed at the amount of interesting dialogue in the world (you get the awful line here and there). While many disagree with me here, I feel the game needs to showcase that better. Quest givers sometimes have no markers, you get relevant chats with random npcs that the game never really gives you a reason to interact with. Some quests end and you assume there is a dialogue change with the quest giver or an npc mentioned in the quest and I have found that is true, but you have to actively pursue them, the game never even hints that you might get more story points if you go there. (while this rewards exploration it also means the average player will never really get the full picture or the sense that there is more)

    A feeling. many. who participated in the development of didn't care about the game. Advertising company again littered thanks to EA, the facial animation is bad (not terrible, but worse than in the same Wicher 3), the story is frankly weak. The only people who were good at your work it's artists. The scenery in the game are forced to admire him, all the planets are incredibly beautiful. Even painted and modeled space! This is the most beautiful space in games! The game looks gorgeous, but we love Mass Effect not for the graphics. Overall, the animation is normal. A nomad, nice to handle, he even slips on the ice. When you walk character, as in real life, to go around the different pits, crossing from ledge to ledge. Facial animation is bad, but don't destroy the game just because of her! It's a massive RPG, not cartoon. You need to enjoy the process of history. not the facial animation.

    The main plot is very weak, and does not tolerate any criticism. The plot is like a fanfic. I don't believe that it was written by a screenwriter completed. A few hours, the plot is intriguing, but that intrigue quickly subsides, and we see a weak, predictable and cliched plot. The main enemy Arkhon is absolutely not interesting. And it looks .as if escaped from the movie Gremlins (are you kidding me?!). Kett - another humanoid, and not much interesting. Just the enemies. We were shown a new race - Angara. again, they are humanoids (the writers without imagination), though looks beautiful, especially the eyes. History and lore of the race Angara is very interesting. A new race is fully opened, which is good news. We also have a new extinct race - Remnants. The writers absolutely not revealed the lore of this race. Remember what interesting was the Protheans in the first Mass Effect? Remnants appear to be a robot, although Remnants - it's not the robots, just the writers not come up with that is this race.

    But! It turns out that in Mass Effect: Andromeda main plot is just nothing. The most interesting tasks we give our team, and you can still find interesting job on the planets (although it is mainly sad scan). The developers have done everything that we fell in love with their team. And if you passed the game completely, and not stupidly ran the story, then you love them. Each member of our team is not just a puppet, and interesting character. Someone more interesting, someone less, but you are sure to find their favorites. Job they give are interesting, and sometimes with new gameplay mechanics. Make sure to do the job mates! It's the best thing in the game. The sex scenes also have - they are no better and no worse than in Dragon Age: Inquisition.

    Multiplayer since Mass Effect 3 has not changed, which is probably good. The only thing that has changed is the combat system. And this makes a pleasant change to the gameplay. We run across the map, applied skills, and great strafe. Many people do not like the new combat system, but I thought it was very successful. We have three games sitting behind cover and shoot is boring. Now we can jump high, hover in the air, strafe. The dynamics of the battle has grown significantly. Also in a single company will allow us to combine classes. this is another nice gameplay innovation. Now you can be not only biotic, but also an engineer. Another gameplay mechanic scan. It's boring and not interesting. Don't do it. Many criticized the game due to scanning, so don't do it, it did not occur? The waiting between planets is no big deal to me, and I personally am a little more intuitive than the average player so haven't had issues with the UI at all.

    Now granted, some of the criticisms are very legitimate. While I disagree that "these characters obviously had to leave the Milky Way because they suffer from some horrible disease that make them ugly and walk funny," I have seen more of the movement issues people are complaining about.

    I've read others, though, that indicate to me that the person just didn't seem to be paying attention to the story and had their own story that they wanted to see play out. They didn't get that, so they have decided to chuck their toys out of the stroller and cry. That being said:

    My Score: 6.5/10, rounded to 7

    Areas where I agree with the criticism:

    1) Graphics issues: the facial expressions are a bit strange at times. They do, however, tend to elicit a chuckle at times. However, I find the complaints that they are "broken" hyperbolic.

    2) Movement: This is mainly an issue in the cut scenes, but the characters don't seem to move fluidly. It's a very mechanical way of moving about, like they are all androids playing at being human, and not doing it well.

    3) Sub-quests: After Witcher 3, it is difficult to sit through an endless loop of "fetch this widget," or "clear out this area" that has no real impact other than experience farming. A couple of them seem to have decisions that you are TOLD will have an impact, but the only impact I've seen is to the amount of experience my character has.

    4) Soundtrack: It's not bad, but it isn't good either. It is just sort of there.

    Now some areas of disagreement:

    1) Story: I think the most common criticism's boil down to "Ryder isn't Shepard." Umm... duh. In Mass Effect, Shepard was already an experienced warrior who knew who he was. Your only real influence over him was making him a paragon or rogue. Ryder is unsure of himself. He has been thrust into a position of authority even HE wonders if he actually deserves and had the fate of the entire Milky Way contingent placed upon him. As a huge fan of "coming of age" stories, I like seeing this.

    2) Dialogue wheel: I like that you are given some more nuanced options, though a bit miffed that in too many cases, it only you the "emotional" response or the "logical" response. The answers, though, fir very much in with how I perceive Ryder to be. He is a young man living under his father's shadow. So many times, you meet people that joined the expedition because of your father.

    3) Sidekicks: The obligatory "one of each type" is present. However, I like the fact that they are voiced well and aren't afraid to hint OR blatantly TELL Ryder that they disagree with him.

    4) Writing: I've seen a LOT of complaints about the writing, and I really have to disagree with this criticism. Are there some cringeworthy lines? Absolutely, especially when Ryder is trying too hard. Kind of like a kid who is TRYING to play grown up and making a mistake because he lacks experience. Which is exactly what he is. This is not ME2, with a team composed of the best of the best of the best.

    ***SMALL SPOILER: You learn this early in the game***

    General Observation: Many of the criticisms I've seen seem to indicate that the person wasn't paying a lot of attention to the narrative playing out. Everyone in a position of power on the Nexus WAS NOT INTENDED TO DO THE JOB THEY ARE DOING. The upper command was killed either by the encounter with the scourge or during the uprising. Alex Ryder dies on the first world he explores.

    EVERYONE has been thrust into a position of power for which they are not ready. They are stumbling along, trying to do they best they can. Some are obviously in over their heads, while others are rising to the challenge.

    Many people seem to be expecting some sort of continuation of Shepard, or for him to feature a bit more in this title. However, they seem to be forgetting that when the arks left the Milky Way Galaxy, Shepard was in the middle of the events of Mass Effect 2.    … Expand

    the combat in this game is addictive, and quite fun, the exploration is also enjoyable. the only way you could rate this game a 3.7 (or lower) is by completely ignoring all the good aspects, and solely focusing on the negative. is this game an 8/10? no. it has too many issues to get a high rating imo. is this game worth full price in its current state? probably not. but if a patch comes out fixing the issues that i previously mentioned, i might just change my opinion on that.

    in conclusion, the game has serious issues that are hard to ignore but the gameplay itself is enjoyable, i would say maybe give it a chance once a few patches have been released.

    (and if you were wondering yes you can definitely see that the people who made this game had a political agenda they wanted to push, but its really not as bad as some are making it out to be)    … Expand

    0/10 really people? The game is not broken and unplayable. It doesn't come close to how great the first 3 games are, but hopefully bioware will get it right next time. Facial animation are really bad for a lot of the characters. The voice acting can be cringe at certain times. I am still really enjoying the game, but there are some issues I cannot over look.     I have enjoyed ME from the first game to the third game, and each had it's pros and cons. This last game is no different in that regard, but WHERE it lags is a bit tragic. The best way to sum up this game is to describe it as a rough draft. There is so much that is good, and so much that needs editing. Thankfully for me, those issues have not persuaded me to abandon the game because they are not always present - and sometimes they actually work well. Please don't think it's all bad. Rarely is anything so black and white as that. My advice is that when the price is right for you, give it a shot and decide for yourself.     ME:A is not a bad game. It is however, not a good game. I would go so far as to say it is more of a "mass effect clone" than a mass effect game. That may seem harsh, but if you try it out, you will understand. If you are a huge fan, and have played the originals for hundreds of hours, you will really understand what I mean.

    For the people saying that there are no animation glitches - that is true. I have not experienced animation glitches, but the game does have very poor animations. First year in animation school bad. And they are plentiful. It would be one thing if they were some side character off in the distance, but this game takes about a decade or two of steps back in animation. It is painful sometimes. Like physically so.

    The characters are not as bad as some people have made them out to be. I can tell that they wanted them to feel familiar without being too similar to the characters we grew to love in previous games. But, I do think they miss a beat with poor introductions and poor followup. If you take my advice (listed below), you will see what I mean, but this tends to repeat itself.

    Combat is fun. I am playing on insanity difficulty and enjoying it. It is much more tactical and much more "cover-shooter" this way. The powers and abilities are excellent. There is an appropriate amount of depth in this system. Sometimes I feel my companions are not really helping, but I am supposed to be the real BAMF - not them - so that is fine. Nothing more to say here.

    The writing is sub par. And ultimately, it isn't what defeats the game or the experience. There have been plenty of games with poor writing that are still fun (some even make it top 100 games of all time list), and it isn't as if ME:A doesn't have a good premise or a good general story. But - and you will see this if you take my advice (listed below) - between 30% - 50% of the dialog is just... bad. I get the sense that whoever wrote it is just not cut out to be a writer, but I don't want to attack anyone. The truth is that a lot of the issues ME:A suffers from should have been noticed and fixed by upper management. In general, it feels as if the game had zero oversight. Writing is one of those things.

    The scanning system, exploration system, and crafting system are all excellent. If that is what Mass Effect is, I am writing the wrong review. These systems are great. I believe these systems/mechanics were fleshed out very well in comparison to the problem areas. I do not know much about game development, but I do know that I would take ME:A without any of these systems if it meant the animations were at least on par with the other games, the characters were properly delivered, and the writing was better. Because those three things are more important to me than fleshed out systems like the ones above.

    My advice is to buy the game on steam and give it the hour it deserves. I believe you will see what I have come to see, and that is that this game is more of an off-shoot, or a clone, than it is Mass Effect. And it really has nothing to do with Shepard or the other Mass Effect games. This game has a great premise, I would even say a "Mass Effect Premise," but broadly speaking, it fails to deliver - on nearly everything. Its execution is its biggest issue.

    So buy it and play for an hour on Steam (if you are on console, do not purchase this game until you have tried it). If you enjoyed that hour and were not bothered by the glaring issues, then by all means keep playing. If not, refund it through Steam and write a review of the game to help other people make a decision.

    After 30+ hours, I can safely say that this is a journey worth taking. SPOILERS FOLLOW. However, I stand by what I said above. It is easy for me to look past the fact that half of the aliens that make ME's universe so amazing are missing. It is easy for me to look past the fact that animations are actually horrid. It is is easy for me to look past the fact that Bioware seems to be making their female character less attractive than the models they are based on (but not the male characters? - I thought this was propaganda but wtf it's actually not. Not to mention their personalities are lacking. Miranda, Liara, and Tali, please come back. You were all intelligent, powerful, and beautiful female characters. You were all someone my daughter could aspire to) I can even - unbelievably - look past the fact that most of the game's quests are fetch quests that are poorly written and just not very fun.

But it is fun, combat is exciting and it feels like a Mass Effect Game.     The game is not as bad as people say. Sure it had its technical problems and the game seem to be 'boring' to some people however after patches it is really worth trying to get into the game. I had a year break from the game and since the return I have had a lot of fun. The game is very cheap now anyway so why not give it a shot?

Lastly, the facial and body animations of the characters are sometimes off to the point it's comical. Not the best for a 2017.. Even though Mass Effect Andromeda isn't a great game and it's a bit disappointing, it's still a good game and it's still fun to play. GIVE IT: 7.5/10… Expand

Andromeda kinda feels like a direct to video version of mass effect where they couldn't get back all of the characters that everybody loved so they tried to take the archetypes and build new, ultimately less interesting characters around them.     I went into this game as a dedicated fan to the original trilogy, having completed all three games under three different Shepard types. While my love for the series as a whole has tempered my opinion to this game, I can honestly say for certain that after about fifteen hours into it I'm still enthralled.     That being said, the game has issues. Lots of issues. Glitches, animation bugs, questionable design choices...The set pieces are nice, the RPG aspects of the Mass Effect series seem to be making a return from the original, the character customization might be a bit lacking in the appearance department and the...female models definitely leave a lot to be desired. These slightly mar the experience a bit, but it's definitely not enough to give this game anything below a 5 or a 6-point score.

    Rather than giving it a point, though, what I want to do is RECOMMEND THIS GAME FOR PURCHASE. It's not perfect, and the whole experience is kind of hampered by the fact that (1) a lot of folks were expecting so much and (2) it's riding off of the coat-tails (and the controversy that follows it) of Mass Effect 3, but I sincerely hope that they give Ryder their own trilogy to rival the original. There's a lot they can learn from with this game, and I hope they take those experiences to make the next one event better.    … Expand

Addison might be the single worst executed character in any ME game ever, and really highlights the problems, except she isn't the whole game.

    I will get to the point, is Mass Effect Andromeda better than the original trilogy, no. That is 3 games that built up a great story. Mass Effect Andromeda pretty much redid the first Mass Effect game. I will go into the pros and cons of Mass Effect Andromeda.

    Pros

    Combat gameplay, by far the best in the series. The jetpack never gets old, it is a wonderful addition to the game. It is fast pace, you can now tech combo, which I think was not possible in previous games.

    Side quests, there are some who say the side quests are awful. They are not in comparison with previous Mass Effect games. I am loving it right now, Each planet has an enemy stronghold (at least the first 2 planets) that you have to take out and there are several steps before doing it. Taking out mini bases around the map, freeing Angara (new race) from their cells who then help you fight in that area. Then taking out the main bases has a couple objectives, for example taking out the hanger to destroy their aircraft, before fighting the leader of the base.

    Enemy AI, is good. This game gives you a challenge. No longer is this game just a cover shooter, the enemy will flank you, they will sometimes directly rush you and try to overwhelm you, or they will play defense and stay behind cover. Now this is all based on fighting the Kett. The other faction the Revenant fight somewhat differently, they are always out in the open, and rarely ever use cover. Being that they are robots and some of them fly, it makes sense.

    Multiplayer, If you like Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, this is better and harder than Mass Effect 3. They reduce the wave count to 7, which at first I was a little disappointed, but I remember the first 3 rounds in ME3 being super easy and a waste of time. So by having only 7 waves, they increased the difficulty.

    In between pro and con

    This could either be a pro or a con, but being able to change what spec you are on the fly, is pretty cool. Not being a class does in my opinion reduce replay value. But in return they allow you to do new game + as many times as you want to learn every skill.

    Story, The game does start off slow, but picks up when you meet the Angara. I enjoy the story, but in the end everyone has their own tastes.

    Cons

    A lot of technical issues. Yes, the human animations are bad. But if you can play Fallout 4 without complaining, then you can play this.

    PS4 framerate drops is annoying.

    Custom Creator is limited. I have to say it is very hard to make a person you really want. They don't allow free reign in who you want to make. You have to choose a preset face and then slightly adjust them. Hair styles are better than previous Mass Effect games, but the facial hair is abysmal.

    Overall, this game is good. All this game needs is more polish. It is disappointing that the animations feel outdated. But if you can get past that, this game is a lot of fun to play.    … Expand

This game was developed by the team that made ME3 multiplayer mode, which makes it their first AAA release, and for their first attempt, it is not a terrible one, but that fact that it IS their first is evident.

    Let's just call this game what it is: Dragon Age: Inquisition with a Mass Effect coat of paint. The moment you land on Eos, you'll notice how similar the exploration mechanic is to DA:I. There's markers for landmarks, quests, fast travel spots; it basically uses the exact same system. This is not a bad thing if you enjoyed Inquisition(like I did), but shows a lack of experience or a fear of trying anything bold on the new development team's part. Still, it works for the most part. One of the better parts of exploring is the Nomad, which is a vast improvement over the Mako from ME1 and makes traversal much easier, even if it cannot be used offensively. Going off the beaten path is encouraged, but be warned of wildlife, enemies, and even the environment trying to kill you- Eos spends much of it's time being unsafe to travel on foot due to radiation for the first 5-10 hours.

    The combat is this games highlight. ME3's multiplayer was a lot of fun to play, so it makes sense that the team knew how to translate fun, fast-paced combat to the main story. Your encouraged to keep moving, much like in games like Uncharted or Tomb Raider, as opposed to the more slower and cover-focused system from the previous Mass Effect games. The jet boost mechanic is a great addition and encourages new and fun ways to approach combat. You feel yourself getting pressured, boost into cover. Enemies hiding behind cover, boost up shoot them from the air as you hover. However, there is a downside to it: your squadmates. You cannot control them as much as you can in previous games. You can only direct them to a new position or order them to attack an enemy. They're serviceable enough to fight enemies but you can't coordinate attacks tactically, which means you're mostly on your own.

    The new crafting system has been described as complicated and have terrible interface, and...all these things are true. If you're a casual gamer, the crafting system may take some getting used to. It's similar in nature to Dragon Age: Inquisition(which this game seems to have no problem borrowing heavily from), but it's layered under a somewhat tricky to navigate interface. That being said, crafting is the best way to get the best gear and if you have the patience, is worth the effort. The downside: the crafting(and gear in general) extends only to you. You cannot customize your squadmate's weapons and armor as in previous titles, they have their default gear and they're stuck with it for the game's duration.

    Speaking of the squadmates: they're a mixed bag. A lot of them feel like stand-in for their much more popular and better written predecessors. Vetra is another visor-wearing Truian, Drack's the new Wrex/Grunt, Peebee's the new Liara(but behaves like Liara's more adventurous and somewhat annoying sister). Some of the new characters DO work. Cora and Liam are your new Kaidan and Ashely, only much more likeable. Jaal is sort of a mix between Thane and Javik from ME2 and ME3, but so far, I found him interesting enough to separate himself from them. Then you got the side characters who are almost entirely forgettable, like Kallo, the ship's pilot, who is a far cry from Joker.

    The dialogue wheel that the developers talked up as being more situational and less binary than the Pargon/Renegade system is a disappointment to say the least. We were promised four choices, but I have rarely encountered them. The default seems to be too and they're limited to "casual/professional" or "emotional/logical". Basically, you can be Star-Lord or you can be Picard.

    A lot of people have bashed the writing, and I feel it's undeserved. It is not as bad as they claim, but it never quite reaches the lofty standards set by ME2 or ME3. Still, you should have no trouble believing this is a Bioware game, even if it's story is pretty by-the-numbers.

    Overall, Andromeda is not a bad game by any stretch. Hype and expectation are what is currently bringing it down. The technical problem were few and far between for me(I'm talking like two noticeable bugs over six hours that weren't game-breaking), the combat is a lot of fun, the exploration is serviceable, and the new characters are sure to resonate with someone. It's not the game many may have hoped for, but regardless it IS good to have Mass Effect back again, and hopefully we'll see more of it in the future.    … Expand

For a game thats is so focused on drama and relationships, this is something that should have been looked at a lot closer, I'm frankly amazed it was released in its current state. Finally, and this is coming from someone only 1/3 through the game, the plot so far seems very thin and extremely similar to the previous ME's.
    All in all though, I think this could be the start of another great trilogy, as long as they don't pull a Phantom Menace, and listen to the feedback from the gamers and implement it in future updates, DLC's or the next instalment.    … Expand

The story, although engaging, lacks the thought provoking plot that was present in ME 1 in regards to the introduction of world, finding clues, and uncovering a conspiracy. The characters of ME:A for the protagonist, squad mates, and other NPCs are interesting, but they do not bring the same attachments that were felt in ME 2 and 3. When tragedy hits or there is a sense of urgency for example, our protagonist and others lack real emotions such as anguish or anxiety that would undoubtedly be present in fleshed out characters. Lastly, far from the pioneer animation that was present in ME in 2007, facial and body animations in ME:A are at times a bit off putting especially in conversations with other characters in the game. They can be distracting and unintentionally comical often breaking sobering moments of the story.
    In short, Mass Effect Andromeda falls short of being a great game. And although there are some disappointments to be had, it's still a good game and there is plenty there to keep one entertained. 7.5 out of 10 .    … Expand

    The game isn't the best in the area of graphics, in fact it is pretty lack luster. There are a lot of glitches and some are pretty bad. But that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the amazing story in this game has to offer. If you are willing to look past the graphical issues it is a great game that can be enjoyed by all.

    7/10, And here's why. The controls are bumpy and don't feel right on PS4. The Graphics are stunning for ME, but yes, I do believe they've killed ME with this. EA, I love you. You've made the sims, ME, Battlefield, Dragon Age, but on March 21st, You killed another game series.

    With Andromeda, the options were as close to limitless as it's possible to be; what aliens will we encounter? What sorts of planets can we explore? Will there be chilling moments, or will it be a more lighthearted affair? What will the element of threat feel like, and who are the baddies? - Unfortunately, what we got was more of the same; a generic story in which a boilerplate humanoid race of aliens seek intergalactic supremacy through genetic superiority (Collectors, anyone?), a slightly-more-compelling but no-less-unpolished benevolent underdog race who just want peace and prosperity for everyone, and ancient technologies left behind by a mysterious extinct society who are revealed to us through a series of sudoku-like puzzles and vague speculation on the part of a party member.

    Space exploration is a little dodgy, and forcing us to watch through lengthy planetary-approach animations before finding that the world we've decided to look at can't even be landed upon isn't cool, but despite this, planetside exploration feels nice, and driving around the deserts of Elaaden, or strolling through the lush jungles of Havarl while the rain splishy-splashes off your armour can feel really satisfying. The main missions are also enjoyable, and character-specific 'loyalty' missions give the developers a chance to show off their writing skills, but unfortunately it often falls a little flat, and is let down by the overwhelming quantity of throwaway fetch quests and inconsequential dialog choices. The game's main protagonist, Ryder, never really seems to fit into - or earn, for that matter - any of the roles they're given, instead just stumbling into scenarios and being revered by default. This simply adds to the feeling of displacement between the player and their character, and removes almost all feelings of progression and achievement.

    Where the previous installments had me rushing combat encounters in a bid to reach the next conversation or romance scene, this one does the opposite; conversations provide no real depth, your actions garner barely any genuine consequence, and romance choices feel stilted and forced. Combat, on the other hand, and gameplay in general, is probably the best it's ever been, with fluid movement which encourages speed and tactical thinking, while the host of equipment options and a well thought-out system of interchangeable abilities and classes which allows you to mix things up to suit different styles of play and battle scenarios really makes you feel like the hardened space-marine you were always meant to be.

    It's hard to give this game anything higher than a mediocre score as a result of its prevalent faults, but it's also hard not to recommend it, and though fans of the series will likely see a few bits and pieces throughout the story which hark back to Shepard's adventures, and fans of fast-paced shooters will relish the game's combat, Andromeda - though very nice to look at - will never truly feel like home.    … Expand

I've played both pre-patch and post-patch and from the fixes and other misc. updates the developers have put out, it seems like they're really trying to fix what fans have worries about. Patch 1.5 made the animations and some textures feel almost brand new compared to launch, soIs ME:A a bad game? No. Is it the best Mass Effect game out there? No. Is it still worth playing?     I am a big mass effect fan and, believe it or not, I wasn't that disappointed with ME 3, but this game... First: The story is you commonly known good guys versus bad guys. Not that great, not that bad. Just medium quality.
    Second: The open world element is just a huge disappointment. Bioware gave us a huge map with nothing to do. The maps are beautiful, but kind of the same.     Third: The combat system is the greatest things about the game. They've improved it so much in comparison to the other games in the series. It's more fluid this time around.
    Fourth: I hate the Mako. I hated it on ME 1 and I hate it now.
    Fifth: The graphics are good. The whole game is gorgeous and that's something a Mass Effect game must have. Beautiful places everywhere, whether it's a desert planet, a night-club or a ship.
    Sixth: The music and the sounds are good, but those things in ME 2 and 3 were better.
    Seventh: The romance and friendship factor is good.
    Final note: Even though the game launched with horrendous facial animations and bugs and the story not being that interesting, the game succeeds to keep the player going for it's Mass Effect feel, with different worlds for you to go and races for you to meet.    … Expand

    There's a long list of poorly done thing about the game.
    Starting with the characters, they are far worse than the characters of the original trilogy, way less memorable, some of them annoying and pointless to the story. Your crew (and other characters as    Bioware tried to make a whole new Mass Effect trilogy that would stand up to Shepard's games. However, they have failed ultimately.
    There's a long list of poorly done thing about the game.
    Starting with the characters, they are far worse than the characters of the original trilogy, way less memorable, some of them annoying and pointless to the story. Your crew (and other characters as well) is just a world's 'cultural' parade. Being a tanned, redhead, religious, lesbian scientist with Finnish name, Arabic surname and super thick Scottish accent will not make you an interesting character! The poor voice acting of Ryder, the protagonist, finishes the remains of the characters' hypothetical charm. Also, a 'Slavic' character speaks C2 English with thick-ašš "Russian" accent while pronouncing his name completely wrong. I'm tipping my hat.
    Secondly, the graphics. They're fine but what's wrong with the faces! They look terrible and completely soulless like in many Frostbite games. What's worse, it's their face expressions and eye movement. Taken straight from the PS2 era.
    Thirdly, the AI and combat are totally broken. It's just unloading clips and spamming super powers to finally kill those dumb enemies.
    Andromeda follows up to M3's trend - decisions don't affect the story. Nevertheless, the story itself isn't that bad. The missions and bossfights keep repeating. At least the levels are much bigger than in the older games.
    I'm a Mass Effect fan and I can say with a clear conscience this the worst Mass Effect game.
    I, somehow, drowned 50 hours in this game. It kept me playing, worked on stable fps but I feel like 7/10 is rather a very generous score.    … Expand

    Yes, the game did come out with technical issues. Yes, there were plot and dialogue based issues. But this game was not - IS NOT - the burning **** fire that some people unjustly called it.

    They at least didn't make an open world (worlds?) game where the spaces there were too large were filled with endless meaningless fetch quests that forever had you running from one side of the map to the other in order to complete them. The characters are interesting and worth pursuing conversations with outside of those that are required.

    It is a shame that there probably won't be anymore content for this game, or for the series for some time now, as unusually I was looking forward to some that the plot itself had set up for.    … Expand

The combat system was good, I didn't like my reliance on the powerful shotgun, but why switch to something weaker? Exploring the planets was fun, less planets to visit then in previous games, but the worlds are so much more alive and fully constructed.     Not the best ME game ever, but not bad at the same time. It plays Okay and the story kept me hanging there until the end. The voice overs are excellent but the main character is a bit lame and boring. After a year of release, it feels good, with minimal bugs and so far i had no problem playing the game.     Overall it is fun. The nomad and gameplay are highlights.

    -3 points for 99.9% boring conversations, all around cutscene stupidity, plethora of immersion breaking bugs/glitches. This AAA is devoid of polish.

    Despite not being at Mass Effect trilogy's levels it is a quite good game and I've appreciated the "originality" of Andromeda Galaxy setting. I hope there will be a second chapter, the storyline was quite interesting...

    Maybe this game falls a little short in comparison to its predecessors, but it is still a good game. The main character feels a little bland and so does the story. Definetly not as bad as some seem to make it, but not great either.

Under all them bad animations, graphic problems, bad written dialogues and tons of bugs there is actually a good game. Yes it is different from ME 1-3, but different doesn't mean bad. The jetbag is a good improvement. On the bad side one must mention the (after years of time for improvements) still aweful looking facial animations. Especially the eye movement is it what ruins their expressions. The dialogues are often very weird and sometimes super creepy when flirting. There is too less main content and too much go-there-and-do-this-really-uninteresting-thing sidequests. It's a pity they didn't include a day-night cycle for the planets. Plants and other ornamental objects mostly have no physical structure you can touch, you slide right trough them like a ghost (I remember Mass Effect 2 already had a bump-into-things mechanic). Generelly the main character never touches things when you interact with something, he just taps on his multitool - this is lazy programming. Not to mention the huge amount of bugs and even some game crashes, I played this game 2021 on a PS5 - I am scared to think about how it must have been at realese date. EA really messed this up as usual but I love the Mass Effect universe so much that it was enough to like the game. In total I enjoyed playing and I think a Part 2 really could save this story. There are so many open questions I want a answer to: Where comes the Scourge from? Who killed Jien Garson and why? Will Tann try to become a autocratic ruler?… Expand

    I initially played this on release and was a bit disappointed. After some reflection and replaying this game and achieving the platinum trophy I think I may have been to harsh. For me I think it was a biased comparison to the original trilogy which I loved. I thought it would be more like the original with a feel that was similar. I do think the story was not as strong as the original trilogy but i understand that is a tough act to follow. The real negatives in the game were some of the glitches and the dailogue.     + Местами персонажами проникаешься. Не так, как в оригинальной трилогии, но это присутствует.

    I finally completed it and it's not too bad game but it's far from great. It was fun to play, story was not bad but there are very repetitive things that make game less enjoyable.

    One of the most overhated game I've ever played. I heard a lot about bugs and animations around the premiere, but in my opinion, that game is still very good. That game has a good story, characters, locations, side quests, and more. It's one of the few games I finished two times, and I had a lot of fun doing that.

    Is it the weakest in the series? Yes. Is it a letdown after 5 years of waiting? Yea kinda. Is it still a good game though? Debatable but I think so. Graphics are still good, and BioWare fixed a lot of the bugs (and faces) that were plaguing this game at launch. Plus the combat is the best in the series HANDS DOWN. I think it’s worth a playthrough.

    When I played the game, the glitches were gone, so I will disregard them. The story is mediocre, and the characters are not as likeable as the characters from the trilogy. The gameplay was enjoyable. I liked the return of the multiplayer. Overall a good game that doesn’t live up to its predecessors.

    The game is not bad. It has fun gameplay, different builds and approaches, the characters are fine and it does have bugs, but now its not even noticeable. Its not the friend simulator that the first 3 were, but the gunplay is way more fun.

The story is groan-worthy and cliche and the characters and settings are pale imitations of the originals (Liam/Jacob; Vetra/Garrus; Cora/Ashley; Drack/Wrex; Peebee/Liara; Jaal/Javik; Remnant/Promethians; Kett/Reapers; Kadara/Omega; etc.). Though, honestly - and thisMass Effect Andromeda was simply "OK". Doesn't live up to the high bar set by the original trilogy but is decent on its own.     The BIGGEST issue with this game is that the Frostbite engine repeatedly chokes. It's as if they handed the engine to a team that had little to no experience developing for it. Constant frame rate drops, horrendous texture pop in, AI and model spawn-in broken repeatedly, textures not appearing, laughably bad character animations, constant sound effect and voice file bugs (constantly clipping or cutting out entirely), and so on. Some of these issues can be game-breaking, forcing a console restart or the need to reload a prior save. The issues are really glaring when you go over to a different game that manages a solid 30 or 60 FPS then come back to Andromeda. Oh and there is a level of laziness I feel should be noted: Almost every non-ringed gas giant throughout Andromeda is a copy/paste of a stock photograph of our very own Jupiter, only with various gray, sepia, and brown filters over them. They didn't even try to change the gas bands or even the location of the red spot storm.

    After having played newer space shooters like Destiny (which, despite its problems, is a fluid and very graphically pretty game) and recent open world games like Horizon Zero Dawn, I can't help but feel that Mass Effect Andromeda is a relic from a different time. To be brutally honest the planets in ME:A were as graphically janky as the planets in No Man's Sky and often only slightly less barren. Which is sad because we've seen what the Frostbite engine is capable of. If you're a Mass Effect fan like I am, it's probably worth a rental. But I'm struggling to justify my purchase because, unlike the original Trilogy which I played more times than I care to count across three different platforms, I doubt I'll be playing this through a second time. [For anyone wondering, 73:56:02 played, 96% completion; Adept/Vanguard Male Ryder]

    Edited extra: One of the complaints many had of the originals was that the romance scenes lacked punch because they didn't have nudity. ME:A embraces its Mature rating and goes with nudity this time around and it feels, well... meh. It's like watching a late night Cinemax softcore 30 minute show with just as much emotion (which is to say none). The romance scenes STILL lack punch as they now feel more like fan service rather than a meaningful plot device.    … Expand

Mass Effect Andromeda is a mediocre game that isn't completely broken so it doesn't deserve notes like 3/10. When you compare MAE to Horizon Zero Dawn which was released just a month earlier it is a laughing stock.

    By the way, Bioware is a goddamn lazy company. A full month after the release and they only issued one lousy patch? The game is still riddled with glitches, bugs and all sorts of problems. I guess their faces are just goddamn tired...    … Expand

    It might be the biggest, most complex and action packed game in the franchise, but Mass Effect: Andromeda is also the least convincing one. The dated facial animations, the inconsistent writing quality and the regularly occurring bugs take you out of the experience too often. On top of that, BioWare has not used the concept of a whole new universe to its full potential, which often makes it feel like Mass Effect: Andromeda has not left our Milky Way at all.
