The story telling is really where it goes from present to past,
Something like an rewind theatre. What lets it down is the bugs and omission of much needed things such as fast travel, customization and lack of imagination.

Hangar 13 has just used the template of many open world games and stealth games such gta, Hitman and splinter cell. The side missions in the game feels repetitive after certain point. The takedowns have different animation but loses its freshness as it goes. The shooting mechanics feel compelling and it really feels good when you hit a head shot.

The characters in this game are given equal importance just like the protagonist. The protagonist from the previous Mafia game has been added and he plays a major role. We can call these character for help like supplying ammunition, support during gun combat. This is the only thing that feels fresh in this game. The cover system is good. The AI in this games is dumb. The people just roam around the same place, along the same path for them to be killed.

Various key elements are omitted in this game. There's no customization. There is no safe house like the one used in Mafia 2. You can't change your dress. The soundtrack and the back ground score in this game is top notch. The 60's style of music feels good. The use of alligators in the game is limited but it is fun. The vehicles looks good until the frame rate drops.

Mafia 3 as game is really good until someone compares it with Mafia 2 and other open world games like grand theft auto.. The game will of course get a patch where the bugs will be removed. I wonder how a studio that made a game like Mafia 2 which had some really amazing ideas came up with very less innovative ideas for a franchise that is almost equal to grand theft auto, bio shock.

A little more innovative ideas would've made this game an alternative to gta. At lest they could've copied stuffs from Mafia 2.

    Pros
    1. Story
    2. Driving
    3 presentation
    4. Sound track and background score
    Cons
    1. No fast travel
    2. Bugs(will be removed)
    3. Omission of key elements that were removed from Mafia 2.
    4. Respective missions.

    Mafia 3
    A perfect example of unawareness.

Mafia 3 is sort of a sequel to mafia 2 in that its main character Vito makes a return, but sadly only as a throwaway... the star this time is a half black Vietnam veteran named Lincoln clay, his race is important to mention due to the fact the game takes place in the mid to late 1960s, and in the south at that in a fictional new Orleans.. so expect to run into some racist trick or treaters and hear the n word used more times than in any rap song you’ve heard…
The first few hours of this game does a great job of bringing the era and time period to life just as greatly as mafia 2 did…
The world felt alive, hearing npcs on the sidewalks talk about martin Luther king jr, James earl ray, john F Kennedy… and the soundtrack in this game is just as perfect as mafia 2s soundtrack was…
And there are a few nice touches to the game like the radio getting staticy when you drive through tunnels…
And then the game cracks and becomes what it’s not and was never intended to be… A generic open world liberation game…
Mafia 3 feels like an Assassins Creed game and ironically suffers from the same thing recent ac games have suffered from…
Mafia has never been about its open world… It’s been about being a time machine... it’s why I loved mafia 2 and it’s why I loved most of the assassin’s creed games… Mafia 2 brought you back in time to live in a world that felt foreign… it made me feel nostalgic for a time period I didn’t even get to live through... it had me listening to music from the 40s and 50s in my everyday life and it immersed me into an epic experience because there was so much love, care, and detail inside of every main mission and the world around you… It all felt hand crafted…
Mafia 3 shifted its focus from being an experience to being a video game the moment it opens up…
And this is where its cracks start to show
The game structure is the same throughout… You’re tasked with doing monetary damage to a quote unquote business… each business is different but despite this you do same thing over and over and over for 20 hours… interrogate a target.. They tell you where the product is... you destroy the product, kill some targets, and get an underboss to come out from hiding...kill him… rinse and repeat...
Once an underboss is killed you can give that section of the city to one of your underbosses for an added perk, careful to keep all 3 happy so they don’t turn on you…
You have to do this Twice to get the main boss to come out… and this mission to kill the top boss in each city’s section are the greatest moments in the entire game.. so many epic and memorable levels to experience here… and the fact that they make up less than half of the game is completely unacceptable…
This doing damage to bring out the underbosses and killing them to bring out the boss is a great idea
I have no issue with this formula being used from start to finish.. what I do take issue is the fact that the structure of these missions dont change…
Every last mission should be as fleshed out as the kill whoever missions… which again are great points in the game…
But especially after experiencing witcher 3.. there’s no excuse for your main missions in an open world to not even have half the heart witchers side mission do let alone its campaign missions…
Sure make me do damage to bring them out, but make each mini boss its own hand crafted experience and story like the main bosses are.. Especially considering they’re required for story progression…
They feel like rinse and repeat liberation points throughout...
If that means the story goes from 20 hours to 12, I’m happy...
a 12 hour masterpiece is worth more to me than 20 hours of the same thing beat by beat…
The actual gameplay itself I felt is a bit unbalanced and inconsistent…
The guns in this game took far too long to reload for the amount of enemies you had to deal with.. sure you can call in for help during missions, but it hardly ever mattered…
You’d constantly get surrounded so cover didn’t matter, even if it did the cover system was super awkward leading you to pop right up trying to switch from cover to cover….enemies felt like bullet sponges, so you’d run out of a clip while dealing with 3 or 4 at a time and while you reloaded it would be over for you…
Even on the games easiest difficulty I felt it was too easy to die considering the circumstances..
And for some reason the main target in these missions takes damage like a tank…throwing the feel of the entire game away every time you encounter one…
You could also stealth around and take out enemies ninja style if you’d like…
Since you do have a voodoo doll to distract enemies and you can whistle to bring them towards you 1 at a time…
The outside world is a bit of a letdown too, as cops hardly feel like a threat at all.. More like ornaments…
And you have to constantly deal with citizens running to call the copy every time you hop in a car like watch dogs but worse...
And they call them unrealistically fast as do the goons calling for back up….
An extreme annoyance that I can kill someone before they say a word and it’s too late.. Reinforcements are here or cops are on their way…
And honestly other than cut scenes or the occasional gunman dropping the n word... I felt like just another white protagonist as no one on the street treated me any different... which was odd considering you do deal with the city’s presence of racism later on in the game…
But the racism seems to only be reserved for missions, failing to ultimately bring the world to life..
I feel like those few missions would have been more impactful if I actually got to feel what it was like to be in the shoes of an African American during the mid-60s.. As I’m sure it was far more and far worse than just being called the n word every now and then and only if you were a mobster destroying drugs and shooting places up……
That being said... mafia 3 still has its moments of greatness…
The cut scenes, the characters, the sound tract… and the missions the developers actually tried at, all ultimately make this game worth plaything through…
    I Give Mafia 3

Now that I have played it for 20 hours or so, I'm fine with the protagonist change. I think this games story touches on some very controversial topics, but I admire it for that. Mafia 2 is still my favorite game in the series, and I often go back to play it just because I am so in love with the "NYC" during Christmastime setting in the first half of the game. Back to Mafia 3, I believe that the game is a lot less narratively focused than it's predecessors, and because of that it can start to feel repetitive after a while. I find myself playing the game in 2 hours bursts, after which I switch to a different game for variety. I much preferred the story driven missions in Mafia 1 and especially 2. With all this being said, Mafia 3 is still a good game, and I don't regret my time spent playing it. Just be aware that it is basically a sandbox game, punctuated by excellent cutscenes. You gather info on a bad guy, disrupt the bad guys business, take down said bad guy, then move on to the next bad guy and repeat the process. If you are a fan of open world sandbox games, you will most likely enjoy this game. I must also mention that the soundtrack is excellent if you like music from the 60's. There are only 3 radio stations, and there is less commercials and spoken word tracks than I would like, but the music is a good background to the action on screen. All in all, a good, but far from perfect game. Expand

Bored, I downloaded Mafia 3 to see what it was about.

What I expected: Some bad driving mechanics, a cliché story line, a poor-mans GTAV.

What I got: A really fun GTAV rip off with a story I really loved. The settings of 1960s America, the race riots and failed war on Vietnam, the anti communism racist Americans and playing as a black veteran, made for a really interesting set up, and from the first mission, you are on an excellent revenge story, slowly turning the knife on a mob boss who owns the city which is split between a handful of varied districts.
There's a lot of duck-and-cover mechanics going on, and AI isn't the best, but it's relentlessly fun to play through. The limiting of ammo and weapons to begin with, made the first half of the game a pleasure as I was forced to grab guns from dead foes to get further in the sh1t.

As games go, it's not terribly original, it's not anything you've not seen before, but regardless, when I watched the credits go after 50hrs of playing, I looked back and thought, that was pure fun.

Don't listen to the negative reviews - if you can get this for £10 pre owned, its a fun as fook game to play through

Many are comparing Mafia III to GTA 5. Mainly because of the open world style, along with the purpose of the game being to take out bosses and remove unwanted threats at your pleasure. But, I would like to remind players of another game from Rockstar: L.A. Noire. If anyone has played L.A. Noire, you will find that Mafia accurately resembles that, instead of GTA 5. Despite both games being open-world, there is not much interaction with it despite side missions. Both games perfectly place the player into the 50's (L.A. Noire) and the late 60's (Mafia III), both have excellent sound tracks and both rely upon the story over its other elements.

Hangar 13 brings us the next installment of the Mafia franchise with Mafia 3: does this third installment become the Don, or does it get buried with the fishes?
Mafia 3 takes place in 1968 in the southern United States city of New Bordeaux, a re-creation of New Orleans. You play as Lincoln Clay, a bi-racial Vietnam veteran and orphan who never felt like he belonged anywhere. Returning from the war you fall back in with the only family you’ve ever known (the black mob), and find out that your family is in debt to the Italian mob and it has to be repaid. When you pull off a job with the Italians to repay the debt they betray you and leave you for dead. Clay sets out on a revenge mission to take down Sal Marcano, his family, and his empire.
Mafia 3 is an open world third-person shooter that does some things well and others not so much. In Mafia 3 you will recruit three different capos: Cassandra, the leader of the Haitian gang, Vito Scaletta, an exiled member of the Italian Mafia from empire bay, and Burke, leader of the Irish mob who also lost his son because of the Marcanos.
There are a total of ten districts to control and each district has a certain crime syndicate that you must take over; you can destroy their supplies, interrogate the informants, or kill the leaders and enforcers. By the 5th district it becomes a bit tedious as you do the same thing over and over again, and going the extra mile more than you need to just to get more money. Taking over rackets allows you to assign one of your capos to run the racket and will allow a bigger kickback to you. Once an entire district is taken over and the boss is killed, you then have a sit down with your capos and assign one of them to the district which will unlock a new perk for you.
The driving in this game feels smooth, with the muscle cars pulling tight corners with a nice drift. Unfortunately, the cars in the game are not licensed.
Mafia 3 is good, but does not keep you interested for more than 20 hours. The soundtrack is fantastic, filled with classic rock and roll, jazz and country from the 50's and 60's. The unfortunate thing about the game is that it becomes very repetitive with each district, the collectibles are a bit tedious, and the world that was so alive during the time of the 60's seems a bit dull. However, you can’t help but continue to see how the story unfolds as you attempt to collect as much money as possible.
Pros: story, time period, character development, writing, soundtrack
Cons: glitches, mechanics, repetitive, lifeless environment and collectibles.

I was hoping for a game that brought back elements of the original Godfather game and after playing over 25 hours, Mafia 3 delivers. It borrows elements of GTA through it's 2 hour opening story missions and in its game world design. It borrows gameplay mechanics of other great games too (i.e. Arkham City and Hitman). This may not make it better than any of those games individually, but combined, it creates a comfortably familiar experience in its own game.

Once you complete the introduction story and are introduced to the cast of characters, the game walks you through taking over your first territory. You are free to take out/over as many rackets as you like until you do enough damage to claim the territory as your own. You will also need to collect fuses that are spread around town (along with collectible album covers, playboy and hot rod magazines, and Vargas paintings). These fuses need to be collected to tap into junction boxes in each district that act as wire taps to controlling the area. Once you have control of the rackets and tapped the junction boxes you are given control of the territory and access to your first underboss. The city then opens 2 more territories for you to continue your power grab and extract your revenge on the top crime boss who double crossed you.

As you unlock each territory a new underboss is at your disposal. As you gain new underbosses you begin to feel more powerful based on the skills and services they provide. You start to feel like you are climbing your way up the ladder of the underworld. These underbosses are important to how you would like to tailor the game to your play style. Each one has more perks that are opened to you the better you treat them. These perks come in the form of weapons, explosives, man power, influencing police, and improving personal traits... to mention just a few. Depending on how you choose to build your empire will be the way you choose to take care of the underboss who aligns with the skills most important to you. Don't disrespect any one of them though or they will rebel and rise against you.

This is where I'm at in the game and am enjoying it so far. It's not a perfect game. It's not too difficult. Using stealth to thin out groups of enemies helps improve your chances. rather than trying to take them all on in a gun fight. I'm sure as I gain access to the ability to call in manpower from Vito Scarletta I will be able to go toe to toe more often. I'm playing on hard difficulty with low aim assist and using simulated driving mode instead of the 'normal' mode (which is more forgiving in how the vehicles handle). Sim mode makes it more challenging when attempting to evade the police who come after you with abandon once they have been alerted to a crime you commit. Some times you can't outrun them in your vehicle and the best thing to do is get out and hoof it. I look forward to what lies ahead in the 7 remaining districts I have yet to encounter. That's a gripe I had with GTA was that the map in single player was great but I never really had a reason to travel around the city other than to get to the next story mission. In Mafia 3 I'm traveling back and forth taking care of my underbosses and taking over rackets. In the end it feels like it will be an 80+ hour game for me but I like to take my time and enjoy the experience.

The world needs more devs like the ones responsible for Mafia III. Really great setting and characters that remind us of all the racism that was bad back then just as it is today. Video games don't get a free pass in that regard just because they're entertainment. I thank the devs for delivering this amazing game, I just hope they fix the few technical issues.

It's not polished. That's a fact. It was rushed... But! On the contrary of most haters, I love the game. I truly do. The story and simple gameplay overshadow some big issues. To those talking crap about the graphics and fps, please remember the disaster that AC Unity was. Beautiful graphics, crap story, crap gameplay, crap fps.
At least Mafia 3 keeps up with the fps, gameplay and story. Graphics variate from time to time. Cutscenes are amazing. Lips sync is perfect.
The documentary style is absolutely perfect and fresh.
Over and above all.... I wouldn't trade my sweet collector's edition.

-Graphics are not really next-gen so to speak (occasional pop ins, jaggy objects, bizarre day and night transitions) I'm sure there are more but I personally have not noticed or affected by them.

Overall, this game have some flaws here and there, but the gameplay and story is enjoyable and fun, where GTA is a satirical version of real life places, MAFIA III take itself very seriously, definitely a breathe of fresh air in this genre. If you love open world action games, do yourself a favor and pick this game up.

Despite a few technical issues, I have really enjoyed what i have played of the Mafia so far. They have captured the alienation of African-Americans in this time period really well, and the story is riddled with classic Mafia-esque themes; betrayal, and revenge. When they release an update for this game it will make it even better as well! Can't wait for it :)

First and foremost I would like to say and to acknowledge that I have never written a Metacritic review. I want that to be know now. I did not create this account to review this game, and this game only. So lets begin with the review of Mafia 3.

My first impression's of Mafia 3 are extremely favorable. The story is good and very well could be a movie, and in all honesty, its the reason to continue playing the game. The voice acting, script, and soundtrack are 10/10. The Story is not only compelling yet multi-leveled.

If you come into this game assuming it is all death and destruction you will be disappointed, or pleasantly surprised. The Story is not only hard hitting, it also shows a very human and emotional side. The story and pacing is very good. The soundtrack is very much Vietnam era. It is amazing. From Otis Redding to CCR. It is amazing. I found myself driving around in the car just to listen to the radio.

Moving on from Soundtrack and story(with that said story and soundtrack get a 10), Lets go to actual mechanics. This is where Mafia 3 starts to stutter. It doesn't break, but it certainly starts to bend. The AI is extremely easy, all most to the point that it is laughable. However, if like me, you want to feel like Jason Bourne and just burn people, you will find it fun to play. I will say if you want a more realistic sense of enemies, this game doesn't deliver. Moving cover to cover sometimes seems clunky and a pain really, yet, not to the point that it ruins the overall experience. Aiming is tight and responsive depending on Aim Assist(which can be changed at will during campaign.) I never found it a problem until hit detection didn't work, which, trust me it won't sometimes. Moving, running, and vaulting does feel unrefined. It can throw you off more than once. You will find yourself in full view of the Police, or enemies simply for the fact the cover system just failed. The mechanics need serious work. Again, not a deal breaker, yet annoying.

Driving Mechanics. The cars feel heavy and unresponsive. Yet believable. It just works. It doesn't feel like Forza, nor should it. Its meant to be a period piece and I think they did a great job with it. The driving in my opinion is spot on. Heavy, slow, yet somehow amazingly immersive. Did I mention the radio?

Moving on from Mechanics to graphics. I reviewed this game on the Xbox one. Cut scenes are exceptional, and very impressive. I would par them with Uncharted 4, with amazing voice acting. However, yes there is a however. The game looks polished yet it seems very grainy overall and the pop in is distracting. Certain colors look not only dull, but unreal. Shadows move in a weird pulse and edges are not smooth. I compared both Xbox one, with PS4 and while the PS4 seemed more fluid they both looked choppy. PC version believe it or not looked worse than both. While you are playing. You will notice the grainy graphics, yet, overall they are very good. Animations are top notch. I love the way Lincoln moves after firing his weapon, or the way he moves when firing a weapon. They all look and sound different and that is hard to work. I credit them with this attention to detail.

Lets move on to overall Presentation. By presentation I mean the way the game shows, explains and shows available content. This is wear Mafia 3 fails miserable. When you open the map you never know where, why, and who. It is frustrating to figure it out. Playing games my entire life I found it extremely frustrating to figure out not only where to be, but in what order and why. This is the biggest negative on the game I have. The game throws to much stuff at one time, and in many different locations without reason, explanation or why it's there. I found this to be beyond madding.

Playing the game gets extremely repetitive after about 8 hours in, which can be cured by play style, yet I found that it doesn't matter much in the long run. There are collectables and upgrades to be had to work toward, yet it does get old.

Final Verdict. I give this game a 7.5/10. Based on story, soundtrack and voice acting alone I give this a 10. All things considered I think my score is correct.

Story - This is being told in an interesting flash forward/ Documentary style which is working well. The voice acting and character modelling is great and there has been some real depth added by referencing historical events.

Visual - Suffers a bit from pop ins and occasional inconsistency in player and background skins going a bit haywire. Good variety in NPC skins but somehow this hasnt carried over to the guys you are shooting at who tend to often to be clones of each other. That being said its a beautiful well set out map.

Gameplay - Varies from feeling really satisfying to being very frustrating. Actual run and gun gameplay is great, weapon switching in the heat of battle works well and Melee is quite effective, enemy NPC's react convincingly to gunshot wounds and the general AI can be quite unpredictable at times. On the other side of things the Cover system can be a pain and throwables arent all that reliable.

Overall - Really good game that probably needs just a little more time in the oven to be a really great game, polish is missing in a few areas and I suspect there maybe an element of repetitiveness as I continue on but still feels like a solid 8 and worth a play.

Afterwards, it becomes a "normal" Open-world game I would describe as a mix between Assassins Creed, Far Cry 4 and GTA V, of course. The side-missions are OK but the story is what drives the game. The driving itself feels better than in GTA (at least for me). Shooting mechanics are OK but the stealth and cover mechanics require some getting used to it.
The graphics are ok. Not perfect, especially when you are driving fast, you can see pop-ins and texture reloading, but for the size of this game and lower loading times compared to GTA V, I can live with it.
It seems as if Hangar 13 did a bold move to "change" the scenario for a Mafia game so drastically. But as soon as you start playing more than a few hours, you see the similarities, connections and realise: changes aren't that big.
Overall, I am really enjoying the first 10+x hours and am looking for the next. The story is good, the music is pure awesomeness and the motivation drives me. As many Open-World games, some things feel repetitive after some time, but with the scenario, music and game-play I hardly feel any fatigues and am happy to continue Lincolns story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My Second (and final) Opinion on this game:

Since my last review, I've played the game for at least another 10 hours. I gave the game a 6/10 based on my early impressions. I hate to admit it, but I may have judge it too quickly and I do apologize for it.

Even though most of my initial impressions of the game have not changed. The driving is still not the best and the sky box still looks terrible. However, I feel like the lasting impression is what really matters in a game. I find that the driving can be enjoyable if you drive fast cars and also by getting upgrades that improve the car's handling and speed. As I engage in more combat and purchase new weapons, I find that shooting with certain weapons to be quite satisfying compared to my earlier opinion. Taking over territories and killing bosses becomes much more enjoyable with better weapons. Other positive aspects or this game is the story telling cut scenes and the soundtrack, I dare to say that its as good or even better than GTA V's. Mafia 3 is not a perfect game, but scoring it a 0 is absurd and very unfair. My initial score was a 6/10, but after actually giving the game a long more than fair chance, I can easily say that it deserves at very least a 7.5 - 8.

The focus in Mafia 2 was obviously the story but you were able to drive around the city if you’d like, it was kind of an open world, but there was nothing much to do in that world.

But the main plot on what keeps a game - it is and there is desire to show all as "classical" mafia died. Missions for extermination of lieutenants and a cap are unique missions, some at what are perfectly directed. The physics of motor transport is executed is unique, there is no stupid copying from the GTA series. And though in general a game reminds, it is rather a techno demo as in due time was with the first part of Assassin's Creed. It is necessary to remember how successfully there was the 2nd part of that series when have added a variety and integrated these monotonous minor missions into a plot. It will also be possible in Mafia 4, a game that was on sale not badly.

Mafia 3 is probably one of the hardest games to review. It's very niche in it's appeal.

1st things first - bad aspects. This game is: Repetitive, samey, spartan and probably overlong - and I bloody love it! This game is a sandbox/open world job, but it is NOT GTA or anything similar. What this game actually is, is an extension of Scarface on the PS2. The reason I love this game so much?

1st things first - bad aspects. This game is: Repetitive, samey, spartan and probably overlong - and I bloody love it! This game is a sandbox/open world job, but it is NOT GTA or anything similar. What this game actually is, is an extension of Scarface on the PS2. The reason I love this game so much? Empire building/management. I totally, 100% get, all the arguments about this game being boring, samey and repetitive - the people saying this are NOT wrong. It's just that I LOVE these elements. I would spend hours on Scarface managing my properties, fending off attacks and colleting cash. This is the first game since then that is anywhere close to the same experience.
Whether you enjoy this game will come down to how much you like managing/expanding a criminal empire through performing very samey, reptitive missions. If you don't, then this game will basically be a boring reptitive suckfest, and I'd amend the rating to maybe 4out of 10 at best. My reasons here being: the graphics are nice enough, and the soundtrack is ace, and the story is pretty good - combined with reasonably competent shooting I'd say that makes it at least below average as a game, even if you hate everything else, hence 4/10.
Personally? I say 9/10, but I am hugely, HUGELY biased. I can literally not be objective about this game. The reasons are - theme, mechanics & atomsphere. I love Vietnam era history, I love the empire building and I love the story in this game, as well as the "feel". This game just nails Vietnam era America (at least in a "pop culture" sense). I have given it an 8 because a) I have to give some rating to wwrite a review, an I would rather that it be flagged as a positive, and b) because for me, it is a great game. However my tastes are not necessarily common, hence the caveats above.
As Lincoln Clay, you essentially complete a variety of very samey missions to weaken, and utimately take over, a diverse array of criminal business fronts. However, much of this is winndow dressing (and I say this as someone who loves the game). Why? Simply put, because whether you are helping a boxer being pressured into throwing a fight by dismantiling an illegal gambling front, wiping out a loathsome underground human trafficking operation by a white supremacist organisation, or smashing a PCP ring, everything you do in this game boils down to: Go Here, and either kill this guy, or destroy this thing. at the most fundamental this is literally the entire game. No, seriously. Compared to the likes of GTA or Saints Row, you can forget entertaining and wacky sideline stuff. There is no parachuting out of planes, taxi jobs, taking photos (outside of the share/snapshot feature on PS4) etc.
Let me be clear, the entirety of this game is basically all about a very angry, revenge obsessed man, doing much the same thing over and over again until he has the financial muscle and support to take out the people he wishes to destroy. Your enjoyment of the game is based on same, and how much you enjoy the empire building aspect of the game.
The story is great, Hangar 13 have absolutely nailed the setting and atmosphere and the soundtrack is sublime. I think that the majority of people, however, wll get bored long before theey finish this game, and I am not sure the above good points are enough to outweigh the lack of variety and things to do for the majorty of gamers. Certainly, this is not a sanbox game you can boot up and enjoy titting about in and having a chaotic free roam experience a la Gta. The variety just isn't there, In this regard even GTA 3 thru San Andreas are better prospects.
If all this sounds negative, it should. For the record, I LOVE this game. However I recognise that many (most, even?) people won't. In many ways, this game was made for people like me. I can forgo the lack of thngs to actually do, and the repetitive, ultimately boring mission structure. I can even overlook the fact that 3 hours or so into the game, you have seen pretty much all it has to offer, because I personally dig the taking and slowly building up my criminal fronts.
Running out of space so summary time
    BAD STUFF:
    Repetitive
    Glitchy
Niche (if the setting does nothing for you, disregard this game right now)
Narrow - There are basically 3 things to do in the entire game - Story missions, Loyalty/Busywork Missions where you upgrade your fronts (which in themselves are mechanically similar to story missions), and a few races where you can get cash and add ons for your cars.
Redundancy - if you like GTA and any of the "busywork" stuff mentiond above leaves you cold, then there is literally no reason to own this.

    GOOD:
Setting- 60's era new Orleans-alike drips atmosphere
Story - Well written (imo) and engaging - I cared about the characters to the extent I can overlook failings.
Buy if you love Sacrface, look elsewhere for GTA syle sandbox fun (i.e. GTA V)

    - Algunos Bugs absurdos y poca re-jugabilidad.
-Nula inmersión el los negocios que vas obteniendo. (Sé que no es de estrategia ni gestión, pero solo cumples la misión, controlas el negocio y no hay más.)

I think the immersion is already broken by cartoon bad AI enemies. This game is better than Mafia 2 but it is still a meh. Expand

But overall, this is an ok game with an amazing cast of characters that has one of the best voice acting and cut scenes this generation has to offer. It elevates the story from a simple revenge quest to a real authentic journey for the protagonist and it's surrounding cast. The graphics in this game and particularly the cut scenes are also among the best this generation has to offer, especially for an open world. Graphics and story-wise, this game is superb (did I mention the voice-acting?). However, the gameplay is nothing to write home about. Missions consists of killing lieutenants and capos of one Mob boss, so then you can kill him. You have to drive to set location, and for the most part kill everyone, and then drive to another location and do the same, over and over again before the game decides you can kill one boss, in order to move to the next boss. Gunplay is your textbook third person shooter and nothing to write home about. The A.I is horrible though, especially in terms of detecting you. Stealth is meh because of it, but is passable. There are a few good things about gameplay though. There are a lot of interesting locations within each mission; For example, I'll be on a cruise ship for one, a firing range for another, a grocery store, etc. The three "major" bosses in this game also all have interesting themes and are all unique and fun. I will also add in the driving in this game is on point, it's tight and responsive; however it's a shame the open world is only there for collectibles. I also enjoyed how you can assign your underbosses districts, and the more districts you assign to them, you can gain the list of perks they have to offer (guns, vehicle mods, etc). To end, this game is a big grind fest, but is passable because of the story and interesting themes and locations set within each mission. If you don't care about story in a game and don't like to grind, avoid this game at all costs. If you don't like to grind but enjoy a good story, rent or watch the cut scenes on youtube or something. To me, I personally liked this game, passable gameplay, but an amazing cast of characters and story made up for it. Expand

You turn the stick left and the camera goes up, you push the stick up - the camera goes down. Really hard to manuever. I've tried changing the settings but doesn't seem to help much. Camera also turns really slow so when guys are sneaking up behind you it's hard to turn and get a bead on them. Have not experienced any bugs yet. Otherwise, I really bought the game for the New Orleans setting which is fantastic. I've never played a Grand Theft Auto game but have played Mafia 1 and 2 on PC so I can't compare it to GTV. I don't think the graphics are that bad, the voice acting is great and the music is fantastic. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and it's spot on. Can't comment on the story because I haven't got that far into it yet. My main complaint is the controls! Also, the print is very small on the screen so you can't sit comfortably on your couch. You have to practically be on top of the TV to read it. They also do not give you any information on how to read the map or what all the symbols mean!!! Really stupid! I'm driving by symbols and I have no clue what I'm passing up. Also they don't explain the symbols on the HUD either. Some are easy to figure out but others are not. Nothing in Options menu to explain them. Also, the on-screen instructions are only up there for about 2 seconds - by the time you scooch up on the couch and get closer to the TV to read them they are gone! Really annoying. Driving is not too bad (anything is better than Watch Dogs!) but it's hard to see the traffic lights (might be easier on PC) until you are right on top of them. This is probably a bad PC port I would think. Overall, it's an okay game so far with some very annoying details! Expand

Whenever you need to take over a racket, you have to do a bunch of inane **** over and over until you can finally either kill or recruit the racket boss. Now, I consider myself pretty patient when it comes to grind-y gameplay, but it even got to ME. I think the only times I ENJOYED doing those lame side missions where for the Dixie Mob and Southern Union rackets because there was just a sweet kind of irony to it. (and because the Hollow is literally the first district you take over). Now, with that being said, the actual STORY is pretty great and getting revenge on actual lieutenants and capos is satisfying. One or two of them even managed to tug on my heartstrings. I do admit that I missed not being able to customize Lincoln or his cars in any way, though. I think there will be DLC for that, which, thankfully, is free. I also disliked that you could only heal via adrenalin and not get a bite to eat to get it back in between missions or something like it. Or that you could only buy weapons from the back of a fan, although that gets explained. Kind of made all the stores feel kind of redundant. Anyway, I'd get this game for the story, characters and gunplay...but only if you're willing to go to an often annoying grind to get from story point to story point. You should probably wait for a price drop too. Expand

The story in Mafia 3 is very well written, the characters are well played; and the soundtrack is impressive, not only using very popular and memorable tunes, but also some obscure songs that really set the tone in certain scenes.

The shooting mechanics are standard (nothing special), and the same goes for the cover system, which are definitely not broken. I played on hard with no aim assist, and the shooting/cover gameplay was pretty good throughout, nothing that glaringly bad or awkward to complain about, and nothing that great or unique to give high praise.

The driving (on land) is a bit heavy and can feel awkward especially in the beginning of the game, but once I set the driving option to "simulation" in the pause menu, and changed the camera view to inside of the car overlooking the hood, I got accustom to it pretty quickly and didn't have many problems there on out. Boats are a different story. They tend to be too loose when turning, and too much damage can happen way to easily. Driving in boats is a big "meh".

There is a lot to do in the game besides the main story. I enjoy collecting old Playboy and Hotrod magazines from the 60's, and that level of novelty is a perfect addition to help you stray from the monotony of busting up rackets/hideouts when you're not playing the main story.

This game is glitchy. and I'm sure that you've read this already (and rightfully so) because again, THIS GAME IS GLITCHY!

I've had my game crash about five to ten times while playing it, but I never lost any real progress because of the autosaving. I can see it being frustrating if you're right in the middle of a long story mission with no autosave, and then you crash and you have to start over. There are also graphical glitches in the game. Sometimes when changing from gameplay to cutscene and back to gameplay, you'll notice that the lighting on the characters can get very bright and stay like that for a minute or two. I've seen cars spin out randomly, people walk on the air, and other minor glitches that you wouldn't see in a polished game.

If you're on the fence about getting this game because of the glitches, wait another month or so, and hopefully a patch or two will address these issues. Glitches like these usually get fixed, and I would say in this games case there is a high probability that they will be fixed because it's a game by a big company in 2K.

Overall Mafia 3 was a fun game with a great story, mediocre shooting/driving, and a glitchy/buggy experience throughout (even though I would say that the glitches/bugs are not game-breaking).

If the game doesn't ever get patched to fix the glitches/bugs then I would give this game a 5/10

If the bugs were addressed, and I didn't have to take them into consideration because they're not effecting gameplay, then I would give this game a 7.5/10

as for right now with the way the full game is I'll give it a 6.5/10 (rounding up to 7/10 using metacritic ratings)

This is a great quality title but be warned there are still some game breaking glitches - I experienced 'freezing' on a cutscenes video multiple times, towards the end of the game the day night cycle glitched and was perpetual night only not to mention numerous times the ai got stuck somewhere prevention progression in a mission.

Despite this it is full of charm and has some of the best visuals I've seen in a game of this type. Definitely worth your time if you're a fan of the gangster genre and open world gaming. I will advise though -just b line the story mode only the side quests are repeptitous and dialogue only no high quality cut scebes. To be found there.

That being said very inflicts my final rating.

Next is the combat. Oh boy, how I like the combat system in this one, AI reacts to where you shoot them, they even have dialogs like "He's reloading, kill him." which is nice and they act very human-like.

Now we move to the driving. It's not that great, however, when you set it on simulation, it's quite enjoyable, at least for me.

The last thing before I'll say my final verdict, is the graphics... I don't quite understand where all the hate comes from, I can't say anything bad about the graphics, it just looks right, even though there are still some graphical glitches present such as bad lightning when day time and rain or shadows looking very weird, but I hope, they will fix that soon, still it must be said, they should've repaired it before release.

My Final verdict for this game. Although I'm a very huge fan of Mafia I and I somewhat enjoyed the second one I must say this is a good game, it's not amazing but it still builds up the story and gameplay better than Mafia II, which I'm glad it does. 7.5/10

    UPDATE:

After finishing the game I found myself confused, what to think of this entry to the series. First of all, the story is top notch all the way to the end, that didn't change, however to get to the main story missions you have to do these repetitive racket bullcraps where you just start to think you won't be able to finish the game and that's the main problem of this game. I can't believe how someone could make these great and memorable main story missions where you go and kill the sidekicks and underbosses of Sal Marcano and right next to it these shallow, boring and repetitive racket "missions" and to top it all of, just implement them as "main story missions". I just lost it there. So, because of this, I have to lower my initial score and I'm very sorry to do that, because the main story is soo great. 6.8/10

However, this game lucks some major points that can make it to be at least on pair with the games’ industry epitome of success GTA 5.

The driving experience is horrendous. I don’t know what they had in mind but it seems extremely arcadie and targeted for amateur gamers or children, (however anyone can argue that cannot be a child’s game as It is gory and racist). Thus, why there is such bad driving style even on the so called simulation experience?
My second statement is that the graphics on PS4 can be on times either splendid or dreadful. This can’t be happening on AAA titles I believe.

Either way I was waiting like crazy this game after I saw the demo in E3, and I state that 2k did a terrible work, keeping in mind that budget given seems to be huge. This can be perceived by looking at copyrighted songs and advertising it got, making it an extremely hyped game.
I am starting to believe that any publisher passing delayed AAA copies to the critics, it tends to have either technical issues or severe bugs.

I bought Mafia 3 day one and don't regret my purchase what-so-ever. The 1960's setting is super interesting to me, not only because of the veitnam war, or the racial tension but because my father who I have a great deal of respect for is a Vietnam vet and pretty much grew up in Louisiana. So you could say I am a little biased. The gameplay is there, as well as plenty of content. Yes, it can get a bit repetitive if you play for several hours at a time, but given that is is a Mob/Mafia revenge game it is going to entail a lot of killing mob/mafia members and that is exactly what you do A LOT. The voice acting is some of the strongest I have ever heard in a video game, and certainly adds to the immersion. The cars handle a bit more arcady than I would like. Hanger 13 has stated, and I am paraphrasing here that "they wanted the driving to be a bit more arcady so that EVERYONE would be able to drive efficiently." I feel they dropped the ball on this. If they were looking to make things easier for more casual gamers that is totally cool, but maybe add it as an option to have a more realistic driving experience. Cars back then were extremely heavy and as big as boats so it completely takes me out of the experience when I am hugging corners at 100 mph in something the size of a small yacht. I did however love the "Louisiana Bayou" setting. It looks extremely accurate to the time, and when I say accurate of the time I just mean the over all feel of the Bayou. That kind of mystic/supernatural feeling. Hangar 13 did an incredible job making New Bordeau (The name of the city in Mafia 3) feel like as big a character as the main one Lincoln Clay. I completely enjoyed my time with Mafia 3 and I am starting again to see how other options play out (you will know what I mean if you play it, I dont want to give too much away). I would suggest going into the game reminding yourself that this is a new studio's (Hangar 13) first game ever. Yes, some of the developers that worked on previous Mafia titles did work on mafia 3 but it's safe to say they were extremely outnumbered. Also, try not to compare it to GTA 5. Of coarse GTA 5 looks and feels a lot better, but they have also had a little over 5 chances at fine tuning, and building on their franchise, whereas again this is hangar 13's first title as a studio. I should say that I have experienced 3 or 4 crashes on ps4 and some minor pop-ins but other than that I haven't noticed anything extreme though, I am no computer tech so someone with a trained eye might notice more. From the environments to the extremely good soundtrack without forgetting the beautiful cars that handle typically like cars from that time, I really enjoyed wandering around in New Bordeaux. Some buildings are also very well designed with a lot of detail. Even games like GTA V don’t do better or even as good. Mafia III has been developed with the goal of having an extreme sense of detail. Those small things, like your tires that remain turned when you exit the car, the radio that evolves with the story, etc make it unique.

However, one first big problem of Mafia 3 is the AI of ennemies. They are quite dumb in combat, and in a few minutes you will have learned everything you need to know in order to never be caught when engaging stealth combat (unless you’re unlucky). AI during stealth is terrible, dumb and totally blind. It really is the dumbest AI ever, I can whisper behind a wall and all the 5 men of a racket would so dumbly come close and get killed in the exact same way. One AI aspect that I liked however is the driving of NPCs. They are reasonably fast where they need to be (unlike GTA) and drive pretty realistically. That is another important element adding immersion to the game.

To continue on the good, Mafia III is good in the way that it denounces racism by showing how serious sh*t could be a few dozens of years ago. From modern slavery to publicly accepted racism such as no-black stores, it is clear the developers wanted to send a message and I like the fact Mafia III is not scared to show this. That’s also part of what I mean when I say care for detail. Nowadays, too many games don’t dare to take risks anymore by fear of not being politically correct and I don’t think Mafia enters that category.

Then I can talk about the story, another crucial aspect of Mafia games. Actually, the story is interesting. It is well built, and going after the organization from bottom to top is in the spirit of a good mafia-movie plot. Donovan and Clay are a good duo, and all the main missions are reasonably well written. Unfortunately, the main story (which, taken alone, is quite short) is slowed down by a TON of side missions that are extreeeeeemely repetitive. Each boss you have to take down necessitates that you clean the neighborhood with 4 to 10 things to do beforehand. And that is a problem since it represents 80% of the game. Obviously, all the dialogs coming with those side missions are incredibly fade. It’s always the same. It became atrocious at a point where they would reuse a building for 2 or even 3 different missions. For example, you might totally beat the hell out of an enemy hideout by killing everyone and then you would have to come back to that exact same spot to kill an under-boss, and then magically the building would be full of enemies again.

Continuing gameplay-wise, I enjoyed the cops in this game. The pursuits can be really epic (not GTA V style where you get shot to death for having just punched someone). I felt some Blues Brothers vibes! I also encountered some random events that happened to be very cool. For example, I once got followed by cops in a friendly camp, and some epic shooting followed, involving my fellow allies taking my side and shooting at the cops. Be warned, police isn’t flawless either though. I’ve experienced many situations where for example, huge shootings happened in the middle of crowded areas with cops remaining not alerted despite being a few blocks away.

Finally and technically-wise, Mafia III can be as good as it can be terrible. As mentioned, the world feels and looks great, a lot of good work has been put on designing a cool map. Unfortunately, there are way too many bugs. Not even talking about the heavily present aliasing and ghosting which I still don’t mind too much, but it’s more about cinematics with no sound, cars popping totally wrecked, missions not launching requiring a full console restart, NPCs not recognizing my truck trailer, weather staying stuck on night raining, NPCs panicking and leaving their cars at red lights (???), enemies spawning when you’re in hostile zone already, silencer that isn’t silent, etc.

To wrap this long review up, I would say that Mafia III is still worth it especially at low price. Why? Because of its exceptional ambiance and world, its care for detail, the cars, and the cool (but basic) story. That of course comes at a cost of knowing that skipping side content will be more than needed and that resulting from that, the game will feel short.

This game has one of the best settings we have seen in a long time. An open world game set in the 1960s in the south during the civil rights movement. So it's very neat to drive around the beautiful open world. Great licensed soundtracks while driving, in cutscenes, and gameplay. Plus, the game's soundtracks are great as well; giving a classic southern gangster feel as you shootout enemies. The voice actors give a great performance in every cutscene in this game. Very likable characters, whether they are antagonist or protagonist. Now, this part I am very confused with. So many people have criticized the gameplay. The driving feels very good, plus the cars are sweet. The gunplay is really good. It is very graphic and satisfying whenever you shoot up the enemies. The stealth is simple, but solid. The melee attacks are prob the best part. You can run up to an enemy and bash their face in and perform a brutal takedown by shooting them in the mouth, gut or head. The violence is very graphic and even disturbing, but that is what makes the gunplay so satisfying.

Now.. this game also has a lot of problems. If I am being biased, I believe that the cons are not too big of a deal. The main flaw with this game that turned everybody off was the repetitive missions. Although it is fun to take the city district by district like a mafia would do, it is very repetitive. Personally this did not bother me much, but it is the main flaw that makes this game from reaching its full potential. Although this is an open world game there are too many glitches. Occasionally the lighting will freak out whenever you enter a building and the mirrors barely even work in this game. Some times it takes a while for the world to load all its details while driving. The AI is not too bad, but it has its moments. Enemies will occasionally see you even if your completely hidden. Police will occasionally get on to you even if you're a mile away from them.

+ Very neat setting, with a beautiful world
    + Fantastic characters and cutscenes
    + Gruesome and satisfying gameplay
+ Classic cars that drive very smoothly
    + Fun boss levels
    + Sweet weapons
+ Fun collectables (more fun if you're a pervert)

+- Graphics are decent for its time
+- AI is not bad, but will break at moments
+- Get great deals from Mafia gangs, but it's not a challenge to earn the deals

    - Repetitive missions, which can potentially lose the appeal to the entire game
    - Too many unacceptable glitches, but at least it's nothing game breaking though
    - Game has no real challenge, has almost the same level of difficulty throughout
    - No fast traveling, which can occasionally be a pain

This game can be very enjoyable for the right person. If you enjoy very mature stories with unique settings, this game is for you. If you don't mind repetitive missions because you're a fan of uncomplicated violent gameplay, this game is for you. Basically saying that if you wished that Quentin Tarantino made video games.. this game is for you. If looking for a game like GTA.. then never get this game. If you can stand it when games are repetitive, then do not get this game.

This is not a great game, but it can be very enjoyable if played by the right person.

    BUT
The game has problems. The textures aren't well done and the whole thing looks muddy. I have experienced 5 crashes including the first time i actually booted up the game. The missions are really boring and repetitive. It is a real grind.
Should you buy this game at this time for 50, 60 or 70 euros? No but i don't think that you should skip this one when you see it on sale.

    + Great music
+ The story and characters are very well done
+ As opposed to what many people believe the driving is actually quite good, especially if you pick the "simulation" option
+ Combat is exciting and dynamic
+/- The graphics are not amazing but also not that bad as what most people are saying
    - The side missions are very repetitive, you will end up doing the same thing many times, however if you have an imagination it gives you the possibility of approaching the same type of mission (although most have interesting different back stories) in a different way, it is all up to you! You can use stealth and take out everyone with a knife, you can go in guns blazing and due to the good cover system the action is very dynamic, you can take out the opponents with a sniper, blow them up etc. if you have a good imagination you really can make the experience of side missions fun!
    - There are a few bugs now and then but nothing of a deal breaker so far (played around 15h already)
    - The open world does not feel that "alive", do not expect it to feel as realistic as in GTA
    - No option to own houses/change clothes
    - Lightning effects are not good

To sum up, I believe Mafia 3 is a good game but has not met its potential. It is worth the money, however don't go out expecting too much from it, whether you enjoy the game really depends on the way you play it, use your imagination (differentiate taking out the targets/fulfilling the objectives using stealth, from a distance and guns blazing etc. and the repetitiveness really does not become such an issue then). The amazing music, great story, great voice acting and atmosphere make it a positive experience.

If you're going to play this game, for your own good, only use the shotguns. If it were not for the story, I'd have stopped playing already. Missions are never more than "drive here, get this/kill dudes, repeat". Police and NPC AI are atrocious.

A lot of things also feel absent. Outfit/vehicle customization did not come standard on day 1. No motorcycles and few boat types. NPCs repeat dialogue far too frequently. You hear the same handful of commercials on the radio over and over again. The game has great promise, but launched far from being a complete package.

The driving model is one of the best, shooting and close combat are also handled well. Only stealth is a bit damaged by abusing the whistle ability.
The graphics may not be the best, frames drop below 30 when entering the Bayou and there's a weird lighting glitch after loadings, glitches with cars, suicidal pedestians but other than that the game is technically handled pretty well and it's fun to play.

Expand

Its stealth is too repetitive, its gunfights too familiar, and its driving too boring to support anything else that’s going on. Despite how clever it manages to be in portraying the conquest and control of a criminal enterprise, the nuts-and-bolts missions feel like busywork, and it never fully explores the most interesting aspects of its setting. It’s better than Mafia II, but that’s damning it with faint praise.

This is a game whose best moments are diluted by a torrent of filler, whose beauty is obscured by its technical shortcomings, and whose obvious potential is squandered by a lack of polish. That weird orange sky is, alas, the least of its problems. [Christmas 2016, p.110]

It could have been a really great sandbox for one evening. It’s a shame the developers decided to extend it by over a dozen completely redundant hours, because they had fresh ideas for around one fifth of the campaign and made the rest of the game repetitive as hell. [12/2016, p.48]
