Excellent pacing and plot over the course of 10-12 hours mean it will keep anyone hooked. That said, it feels like a game pushing this hardware to its limit and the limitations do catch up with it in a lot of ways. Anyone who has a PC capable of playing the game would be well advised to maybe opt for that platform. Additionally, some unnecessary bugs and controls that can be difficult on a console controller sour the experience somewhat. However, there are not many alternative titles of this genre and Mafia: Definitive Edition certainly delivers a rip-roaring tale for those who wish to experience it.

The new coat of paint is an eye candy and the experienced and older gamers will meet again with a really friendly acquaintance, but Mafia (level design and structural-wise) shows its age and not in a good way.

A good looking and competent retread of a second rate original, which improves on everything from the graphics to the driving model, whilst maintaining the game’s cinematic essence.

Mafia: Definitive Edition’s gorgeous open world is weakened by its mediocre campaign and flat combat mechanics. Driving through the bustling streets and open countryside of Lost Heaven in classic vehicles is fun enough at low or high speeds, and the story, while rushed, does ultimately put players in cool locations and situations. But without any unique storylines or exciting on-foot gameplay to keep the player invested, and a restrictive focus on missions over open world exploration, there’s little here that stands out for those who don’t already have a fascination with mafia stories or mid-twentieth century history. For all the emphasis Mafia: Definitive Edition places on history and creating a legacy, this well-made but largely forgettable journey doesn’t do enough to earn its spot in the family.

Hanger 13 has crafted a gorgeous remake of an action classic, but the picturesque city of Lost Heaven and the characters that call it home are sadly lacking in substance, resulting in an adventure that could have been so much more.

Those looking for a nostalgia trip will find it here, but there are some huge asterisks to consider before diving in. Mafia: Definitive Edition is just right for those looking to kill a few evenings before the fall's bigger games start rolling in, or those that have fond memories of the franchise. It's got a pile of problems to sort out, but at the same time, it scratches an itch that few other games can.

It’s in the art direction of the Definitive Edition, led by Petr Motejzik, that you catch the developers’ obsessions: their love of long-coated ne’er do wells; of chrome shining through the wet; and of crime fiction, free of the emotional collateral and ruin of real crime.

You'll be hard-pressed to find a remake more faithful than Mafia: Definitive Edition. It pays a great deal of respect to the source text with excellent cutscene direction, voice acting, and a cast of characters you can't help but fall in love with. The game definitely shows its age with frustrating controls and vehicle handling, but the next story beat is enough of an excuse to continue pressing forward. Mafia: Definitive Edition's narrative and everything that comes with it holds up to this day, and it's one worth revisiting even if you know it like the back of your hand.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is enough to bring back fond memories, but won't make newcomers understand the legendary status of the original.

While it's clear that the publishers of the game recognized the limitations of the remake by employing a reduced price overall, this is one case where I imagine a remake of the mechanics and story would have taken the game to new heights and made this a more fulfilling experience.

The original Mafia was well-received at its release, and I’m sure a lot of people remember it fondly. For me, it’s something that’s probably best seen as a foundational statement in a series that got better over time and subsequent entries. As part of the Mafia trilogy, it’s an interesting footnote on what came before. As a standalone game that can hold its own against modern titles in the open-world genre? Fugetaboutit.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is tedious enough as it is by 2020 standards. Clunky gunplay and lousy vehicle handling make the shootouts as frustrating as the getaway drive. The promising setup can’t avoid getting whacked either as it disappoints through its inability to meaningfully execute on its multiple beats. The talented cast and better realized 1930s world outdo its 2002 counterpart, but the rest of its blunders come together and result in an offer that’s relatively easy to refuse.

This is short game in relation to the original. But! they've changed many small and even
larger things. Character behaviors, plot elements, mission segments and gameplay
elements, pretty much everything is different now. The overarching story is luckily still the
same, but I was constantly annoyed by all the disrespectful changes
i do think the lucky b*stard mission changes is the most offensive they shorten that so hard
that being said everything else is rather enjoyable besides some odd choices..
Remember how Morello's brother survives multiple assassination attempts out of sheer luck?
That's why his missions are called "Lucky B***ard". Well, the remake has reduced the
number of assassination attempts (I think the one with the train doesn't happen at all) AND
the events have been changed. In the original, Paulie tries to shoot Morello in front of a diner
and his gun jams, but in this version, Tommy PREVENTS Paulie from shooting Morello
because he's holding a woman hostage. This completely messes with the concept of him
    being lucky.
They've also changed the circumstances behind the plot twist with (a major mistake, in my
opinion), they've removed Yellow Pete, they've changed how the Death of Art begins,
removed even from freeride trains with trams for player activity with them etc...
If you're like me, and you're kind of a purist when it comes to the story and general
atmosphere in Mafia, these things will probably constantly bother you.

Consistency and originality of the gameplay - Probably the worst of the worst, the gameplay in this game was dull and super boring. The gameConsistency and originality of the gameplay - Probably the worst of the worst, the gameplay in this game was dull and super boring. The game followed a linear pathway in almost every single mission.
Also why no classic soundtracks? The music is classic version is so much better. In this remake, music is the boring. Further, there is no weather change/rotation in Free Ride Mode, which makes Free Ride Mode pointless after a couple runs. The city is filled with an overpass ,for trains , he is all filled with them moving and communicating with NPCs, but my access there is locked, is that a mockery? Very little replay value and little value freeride.
Definitive Edition it certainly did bring back some memories of the old game, the story, graphics, characters were all enhanced, but it all boiled down to a typical nasty new age game design. I would say that if they stayed loyal to the old game formula and just made it look and play better, it would be a masterpiece of a remake and a game, but instead, it turned out to be just another **** .
