Now about the game a bit, far what it is(ft2) it looks great, and has a solid combat system, not the best, but it is presentable and souls fan will be right at home with this one I believe. The story mode that we got seems to be a pretty long run, I'm looking forward to climbing that tower.

I see no reason why should anyone hesitate downloading the game, but I have to admit, if you did not like Grasshoppers' previous titles you'll probably hate this one too. To a fan of this studio it was a nice present, and I appreciate it for what it is, the lack of a platinum trophy IS a bummer though.

The game treats any game stoppage outside of the lobby as a death. Any stoppage. That includes their own bugs. I have a reoccurring bug where the game crashes constantly on the same boss, same time. An actual game breaking bug.

This boss is required to grind to get weapons strong enough to move on, now that's impossible. Worst still is the 3 hours it takes to bring that character back after the crash kills it.

Contacted customer service and their attitude is that its a death. Nothing they can do. So I can't finish the game and my time feels wasted.

There are some good ideas here, but treating everything as a death including their own game flaws is a little much for me.

I'm really torn on what I think of this game because on one hand I really love the single player aspect (not without it's faults of course) but I'm really annoyed with the multiplayer.

First of all I love the atmosphere of this game. It's weird, zany and unique which I absolutely love from a grasshopper game with the music, cut scenes and cutscenes being a joy to listen and watch.

The overall gameplay to me is like dark souls but worse and dead rising. You can equip a left and right hand weapon (melee or projectile) that will level up the more you use it which will increase attack damage, rage damage, unlock new moves ect. The movement is very fast with lots of rolling and dodging very minor platforming. Rage attacks are very satisfying to land and performing a goretastic attacks when an enemy is stunned is a fantastic pay off when destroying an enemy. Exploring each new floor and trying to survive scaling up the tower is a challenging but enjoyable and having to adapt to new weapons because of the lack of durability adds variety to it . Since this is a free game, there are obviously going to be micro-transactions but surprisingly, it's not as aggressive as I thought. Buying death medals isn't necessary but it can help a lot climbing the tower and getting extra supplies or buying extra inventory space and if you're smart with it, you can save up a good amount to use in dire situations. If you die, you can spend a death medal to continue from your current area or come back to the same area to defeat your previous character or just some coins to bring them back which isn't too bad because you'll usually have a good enough amount of money to use. The game is chocked full of story and neat lore in the form of comics and audio tapes so if you're worried about finishing the game early, that's not the case.

However of course there are some problems to this game. One on one combat is fine but when you get to two or three enemies it gets frustrating. The lock-on isn't great, the camera doesn't follow behind your character and switching targets is an even bigger nightmare. Getting cornered by lots of enemies is basically death and if you're stuck in a combo by an enemy, you either mash your way out or just give up. You can't cancel your attacks into a roll so if you hit you better be sure it's a good one. Scrolling through items and using them can be annoying because at times it won't swipe to the item I want and I end up using the wrong item or dying because I accidentally ate something explosive and I can't tell you how many times done that.

Multiplayer can be fun but at the state it's in now, it's not (at least not to me). Multiplayer is a raid sort of system where people can attack your hub, invade your world or hunt you down. At first, leveling up was fine but when other way higher AI controlled player invaded your world, it was a pain to deal with them. Being raided is also an issue. While you explore the tower or aren't online, other players can invade your hub and steal your **** (not all of it but a good amount). You can take precautions by setting up your extra characters as defenses but if your guys aren't leveled up and armed to the teeth, you're basically **** so you'll have to worry about that as well which I'd rather not do. It doesn't help the fact that you have to play some multiplayer in order to gain enough currency to upgrade your hub (increasing bank size, amount of people on your team, ect.). So more or less, it's something I don't really want to deal with but have to in order to progress.

So basically yeah, I love the game but don't care for the multiplayer. I'm at floor 12 or 13 so there's still a ways to go.
If you like the raiding and hub defense multiplayer stuff then you'll probably enjoy it more than me but
it's free to play so can't complain much because it is filled with lots of content so check it out for yourself.

This is a very good soul-esque game - that fails big on the most important feature: fun in playing it. The way the economic has been set up is that you are constantly starved of resources.

Going for a farm ? all your gear will break down, you end up as always running around naked fisting enemies - your precious fragile +4 weapons tucked away "just in case" but ultimately unused.

Going for a farm ? all your gear will break down, you end up as always running around naked fisting enemies - your precious fragile +4 weapons tucked away "just in case" but ultimately unused.

Going for the boss ? You better dont die or - its a 20min worth of farming to "buy back" your char.

Dying in a far remote corner ? You can pay and get your full health back.

Trying to recover your own char (like in Dark souls retrieving souls) ? You will get the char back but all your precious farmed mushrooms, blueprints etc will be gone (note that "paying" go get the char back works instantly and gets you all the farmed materials back).

Have money ? Ok then you can die 50 times in the same area and can always pay your way out of trouble.

This resource starving has the effect that you cannot enjoy the game - you are always worried about using weapons, armors etc - and spend an inordinate amount of time juggling multiple chars, sending them on farming missions, selling stuff etc - that when you finally are ready you are already tired of it. Long and continuos loading times drive you crazy after a while.

I understand this is a free game - but its implementation is worth of the worst Mobile games. Its being forced between farming for 15-20 hours to recover one char and paying real money for it. This leaves a very bad taste and the fun is gone.

Coming in late to a game that is f2p is usually a nightmare. I have to say that I really enjoy this game. I have to say that I really enjoy this game. Like its developer it has a sort of phone game grind element to it which cheapens the experience to be honest but overall it's a blast. I would say it's likely not "free" and while every review says don't purchase "death metal" the in game currency, you sort of need to at pivotal times just to advance. Those with phone game experience will recognize when this is (expanding storage slots, pushing through a key boss fight to get to the next level cap etc.). Look at it as a 30 dollar game and purchase the free PS Plus pack as well as one pack of DM later after playing for a bit and you'll be in for a long enjoyable ride.

Graphics aren't bad, gameplay is fluid, load times are awful and constant.

PVP is essentially leave your base unmanned and prepare to get raided and raid in one sitting what you need to advance upgrades. So basically it's non-existent. Join CA or one of the big teams for free stuff since there isn't a level cap and they win everything.

Bosses are creative and original, weapons and upgrades aren't too bad and add a level of personalization.

A few online tips go a long way (poison eater, how to avoid using DMs when you die, etc.).

I've been playing for a short time and have hit the R3 level cap and i'm entering the true difficulty now and to me it's no more of a grind in the 20's than it was earlier. Just enjoy it for what it is, senseless violence and bizarrely awesome music and npc interactions in a small price game title.

I created an account just to write this review. After playing this game since release, I can assure you that is is the most miserable, glitchy, cruel, cheap-death, grind fest of a terrible game to ever exist. EVER. This is NOT free-to-play Dark Souls, and don't listen to anyone that tells you that. This game does everything it can to try and get you to spend money, from charging you ingame currency for deaths and check-points, to not letting you organize your inventory so you can never tell why it's so full all the time. (Buy death metals to revive, buy premium passes to use check points for free, and also buy more death metals to expand your storage-all for real money!) The better your equipment is, the more expensive it is, BUT it breaks faster! You will grind for weeks just to advance in the game and experience a couple of hours of actual game play. Yes, actual weeks of grinding to play for 2 hours! Then the game will let another player's character into your game-someone who has more time than you, and has weapons and armor from further in the game that you don't have access to. That player's character will surprise one-shot you and it will take hours to grind out the hundreds of thousands of dollars in game currency to get your character back (again, unless you want to pay real money to revive.) Also, over half of the quests in the game, specifically the ones that offer the best rewards, are glitched and cannot be completed. Oh, and you can't ever save in game money. The second you're slightly above being broke, other players invade your base and steal it all, and there's nothing you can do about it-at all. You can place your own characters as defenders, but their AI is (by design, I assume) horrible. Other players make quick work of AI characters, whom they then kidnap-stripping your AI defenders of all of their gear, which you then have to repurchase with ingame currency (get ready to grind more!) It is so unworth it to guard your base because of this, that most people don't bother to defend their bases at all and everyone just makes sure they have nearly no cash at all times. All of this is just scratching the surface of how heinous this game is. This is, by no means, a compete list of complaints. I could go on for hours, but it's not worth it. Just like this game is not worth it.

I've been playing video games for decades and this is the first time in my life that I regret starting a game. It's not so bad at first, but it just gets worse the further in you get. I have to quit playing, but it's hard to when you've invested so much time and effort and just want to see it through to the end. But if I could go back and decide to have never started playing it, I would. Easily. This game is not worth your time, or money. Don't even try it.

but this game doesn't always do that, so I ran around for ages, just wanting to turn in for the night, eventually I decided to go all the way back to where I came. Not thinking that when I'd load up again the next day that the game would force you to do redo boss encounters you've already beaten. I mean it makes sense in a game with roguelike elements, but it isn't entirely that, because the game does choose to give you these checkpoint elevators sometimes but in this case it didn't and sucked every bit of goodwill I had towards the game and suddenly the free to play elements feel very sinister and manipulative.

It flawlessly mixes in online play inside the Tower of Barbs, with characters who die appearing as enemy NPCs in your and others' towers. The raiding is a completely unnecessary and annoying mechanic, and the premium currency is there and needed for vital things like storage expansion, but the rest of the game is very fun. Humor relies on things like Uncle Death (the Grim Reaper) riding skateboards, wearing silly glasses and referring to you as "Senpai", and enemies ludicrously transforming into blood geysers after being punched to death.

You might feel like you need to farm a lot or buy expensive breakable equipment but you really don't, just climb the tower, senpai! The item you'll find upstairs might be better than the one you're farming!

Most upgrades are unlocked after the 10th floor, like the pvp, waiting room updates and better characters. Where dark souls story was cryptic, it's the gameplay that is..meaning wikis are sometimes your only alternative to a good instruction manual, too bad.

The asymmetrical online game is also really nice, it feels good to invade people and destroy their base just like it's a pain to be invaded by other characters at every corner. The concept of teams make the whole pvp engaging, your country/state have rivals and winning means big rewards for your team.

You won't enjoy that game if you like narrative games and hate farming, repetitive environment, stiff controls, stamina management and yelling "omg that death was so unfair".

Let It Die tries to play like a rogue like Dark Souls style game. I personally detest the Souls series and find them broken by their extreme difficulty that prevents the games from every being fun. Let It Die is easier than the Souls games which is definitely a plus because it made the experience much more enjoyable. The game plays like a hack and slash game where players are tasked to climb to the top of a tall tower full of dungeons and enemies. The game tells an interesting premise that I found quite interesting but sadly the story never gets very far. The characters in the game such as the Grim Reaper called Uncle Death are funny and quirky and really added to the experience. The graphics I found decent but nothing spectacular. The artstyle is certainly interesting but dungeon layouts and textures are often copy and pasted throughout the game. Let It Die has a great gameplay concept but it fails in execution. Since the game is free to play the Devs tried to find ways to force the player to buy microtransactions that revive the player after being killed. The bosses and enemies in the game often use cheap unfair moves that kill the player in one hit forcing you to use a revive the character or scrap it completely. I personally do not like rogue like games and find them gimmicky. Forcing the player to start all over again is annoying and not the least bit fun. The player gets to create their own fighters to climb the top of the tower. The armor and weapons in this game are great and feel satisfactory to use. The only problem with the weapons and armor in this game is the fact they break quite easily forcing the player to constantly changes weapons and armor in the middle of battle. The game controls are also very clunky and lead to unfair deaths as well. The game is built around precise combat yet the controls are too imprecise for any of this to work. Another problem Let It Die has in its combat is the fact that the once the player is hit by an attack from the enemy it becomes impossible to dodge until the enemy finishes its moves. This can also cause more unfair deaths. Despite this the combat can be fun and addicting making each blow the player makes feel crunchy and real. The game also features another annoying rogue like element that if the player does not save on the ground level of the tower the game will kill the player and force the player the player to use a new character. I found this very strange because instead of allowing the player to use a revive the game forces the player to start from scratch which I found extremely frustrating. Eventually I had no choice but to quit because of this mechanic. The revives in this game are called “death medals” and the player is given a few for free to start off with. The game will occasionally reward the player with these in the game but they are very rare. Once you run out of death medals the game will ask the player to either buy more death medals using real life money from the Playstation Store or start from scratch. At first I payed the cheap 99 cents for 10 death medals but they quickly ran out the higher I climbed the tower. The game forces you to stop buy elevators and pull a switch so you can return to that spot on the tower. I eventually got very far up and found no elevators for many floors until I had to log off. When I logged back in I was not given the option to revive my character and was forced to create a new character to climb the tower. I lost all my progress from the last climb where I climbed over 5 floors. The character I had was maxed leveled so I attempted to climb to the top but my character was swiftly killed on my way back up by a boss who used a cheap one hit kill ability I couldn’t dodge. When I faced this boss with my other character the boss never used this ability until now and repeatedly did it to my other character making me eventually run out of death medals. When I saw if I could purchase more death medals for 99 cents but found that I had to pay over $10 for more death medals. After this I decided to give up realizing I was wasting my time. For a game that sells itself on being “free to play” Let It Die is a very expensive game to play if you plan on completing it. Overall Let It Die has a great vision but fails in execution due to its janky combat and forced in microtransactions. I would not recommend playing this game at all but if you insist on playing it I would advise playing until you run out of your starter death medals. The only reason why I am giving it a 3 is because the game despite having many flaws had a great concept that I believe could have been fully realized if the combat and level design were refined and the game was made more fair and not oriented around forcing the player to spend money.

Very clunky though and also developers take note of this one thing don't make it to where if you grade up and have a new level one character have to face a level 40 or above cpu controlled player. The game in general feels very pay to win and forces you to need loads of money just to progress. issues why do you not have a reload or buy bullets or repair system? i think that would of been great. Anyone you read who gave this game a 10 is lying to you its not a great game those people also prob had enough money to buy loads of retry skull also this game is worth a 5 at most for any player who just wants to not spend money to win or progress.

    Pros
    1. Great concept and also forces you to not spam
    2. Uncle death makes things funny
    3. a good range of weapons to use

    Cons
    1. No repair or Refill bullets for your weapons
    2. Finding new blueprints to develop new weapons is minimal you find multiples of the same blueprint
    3. Computer controlled players unless they are low level will always kill you.
    4. you spend all of your time farming and grinding kill coins
    5. Pay to win model mostly will scam you out of buying money
    6. no way of upgrading your character from grade 1 and up forced to use kill coins

while its a great game concept that i will continue to play unless the developers make changes to add a repair system a craft bullets or buy refills. this game deserves a 5 at best no more no less. Remove the pay to win model so more people can play it without rage also lower prices to go up and down elevator. the elevator pricing stalls progress and makes the game nearly impossible to progress if you go up the elevator find a new blueprint then have to go down.

The gameplay is solid even with some of the off voice acting. Its a beatemup tower climb game and it does it well. Beating the game will make you feel like a champ rather than just a chump on easymode.

They've ramped up the difficulty in number only, altered the decal drop rates (main source of progression outside of gear), and significantly increased the cost of gear for new floors while not matching the rewards enough to even cover gear on successful runs.

-If you are wearing the latest armor maxed on the latest levels/floors with the latest weapon maxed for current content, you will deal quite a bit less damage, but take a MASSIVE amount of damage more than using the previous tier of maxed armor/weapons against the previously highest enemies. On the new floors, they mostly use the same types of weapons as previous floors but with simply higher damage numbers. The only thing they did for the new floors was add red smoke and replace every enemy spawn with the hardest enemies.

-Players had tried to determine the decal (provides passive bonuses/traits for character) drop rate closer to launch, and when they tried to do so again more recently they noticed a sharp drop in rare decals. Note that they recently add a paid source rare of decals when previously the only way to get decals with cash was a brutally inefficient exchange rate with standard currency (bad enough that nobody would do it, believe me).

-The new floors take a lot of of the top gear. This is fair. However, they didn't do any tuning at all with the rewards - you don't get enough currency to cover gear costs. The immense hp sponge aspects and sharp damage increase should warrant enough currency for gear and THEN SOME. Instead, they're actively starving us likely in anticipation of some way to monetize it based on recent additions to the game.

Basically - Play the first 40 floors of the game, they're fun and progression is not bad because they didn't design them with pay to win elements in mind. Don't spend a god damn penny unless you hear that they unscammed the game.

Sure it's Free to Play, which won't feel great for those who enjoy really long play sessions, but as a game to play a little every day, and spend the occasional few bucks on, Let it Die is really fantastic, Like Dark Souls meets a Junji Ito comic, mixed with the the Mighty Boosh!

Pretty fun can't beat the price and the micro transactions so far don't seem to be a big deal allowing you to focus on making your way through the game without worrying about them at all.

Let it Die is a free to play game for the playstation and surprisingly has a lot going for it, but it has a lot more issues holding it back.
I loved Suda51 and all of his games which had me excited for this one…
It definitely has the charm and feel of a Suda51 game with its zaney characters like uncle death…
In this game you choose a character and try to climb the tower of barbs….
This is sort of a linear version of Dark Souls… except it feels completely broken…
This game is all about trying not to die…
You pick up coins to buy items at shops and armour and weapons off of characters that all break insanely fast…
You pick up mushrooms and animals to heal your self or use against enemies…
And you try your hardest to kill them before they kill you.. gain xp to level up..
Use certain weapons to gain mastery and climb the tower…
The problem however is the combat feels broken…
    It lags..
Your character will stand there taking damage as they get hit or they’ll finish an attack animation instead of rolling out of the way…
This ultimately makes combat feel cheap and takes out all feeling of fun and skill…
We should definitely be able to roll out of the way at any and all times…
The game should be waiting on my input, not the other way around
Because of this combat lag youll die fast and youll die often…
And theres actually a pretty cool mechanic when you die where your character will be waiting for you when you return up the tower with someone else.. as well as other fallen characters from other players…
And if your fallen character kills theirs youll gain rewards…
It isn’t instant game over when you die though..
You do get lives every day you log on from the game and you can use these lives as continues…
But they do run out.. and of course.. you have to buy them for up to $100 if you want to continue playing from where your character died or wait until tomorrow for the game to give you a log in bonus…
You can turn on elevators that you find to allow your character to skip sections you’ve already been to…
But this game was clearly designed to kill you in a cheap way to exploit people addictive tendencies…
    The lag stops skill…
This feels more like hack and slash gambling…
Its unresponsive cheap gameplay… stay away
I give let it die …
    a 4/10

could have been a good free-to-play Dark souls-like, but its pay-to-win nature will disgust you after a few hours, when the difficulty really goes up.

There’s a level of complexity and polish that belies the lo-fi visuals, the gore, the bonkers story and the motley crew of nutbags that you encounter. Under new ownership, Grasshopper has – dare we say it? – grown up. [March 2016, p70]

Let It Die is flawed, but it’s perhaps the best free-to-play game ever made on the PS4. It’s different, daring, and occasionally impossible. But it’s also a must play for fans of the roguelike gene.

It's lovably shonky in the classic Grasshopper style, but this is a game of surprisingly layered depth and subtlety, and the studio's best game in yonks. [Feb 2017, p.85]
