Now about the game a bit, far what it is(ft2) it looks great, and has a solid combat system, not the best, but it is presentable and souls fan will be right at home with this one I believe. The story mode that we got seems to be a pretty long run, I'm looking forward to climbing that tower.

I see no reason why should anyone hesitate downloading the game, but I have to admit, if you did not like Grasshoppers' previous titles you'll probably hate this one too. To a fan of this studio it was a nice present, and I appreciate it for what it is, the lack of a platinum trophy IS a bummer though.

The best Free game to come out for PS4! The game is a grind. It has really good humor and it fits in with the game. Locking on to enemies can be a drag but other then that they could have sold this game for 39.00 and people would have loved it.

I have to say that I really enjoy this game. Like its developer it has a sort of phone game grind element to it which cheapens the experience to be honest but overall it's a blast. I would say it's likely not "free" and while every review says don't purchase "death metal" the in game currency, you sort of need to at pivotal times just to advance. Those with phone game experience will recognize when this is (expanding storage slots, pushing through a key boss fight to get to the next level cap etc.). Look at it as a 30 dollar game and purchase the free PS Plus pack as well as one pack of DM later after playing for a bit and you'll be in for a long enjoyable ride.

Graphics aren't bad, gameplay is fluid, load times are awful and constant.

PVP is essentially leave your base unmanned and prepare to get raided and raid in one sitting what you need to advance upgrades. So basically it's non-existent. Join CA or one of the big teams for free stuff since there isn't a level cap and they win everything.

Bosses are creative and original, weapons and upgrades aren't too bad and add a level of personalization.

A few online tips go a long way (poison eater, how to avoid using DMs when you die, etc.).

I've been playing for a short time and have hit the R3 level cap and i'm entering the true difficulty now and to me it's no more of a grind in the 20's than it was earlier. Just enjoy it for what it is, senseless violence and bizarrely awesome music and npc interactions in a small price game title.

    Pros:

    - Very generous F2P model, NOT P2W AT ALL - Great music and sound design from Silent Hill's Akira Yamaoka, who also licensed over 100 different tracks from JP bands just for this game - Highly addictive gameplay loop - Good level randomization - Gross/hilarious cyber-guro-Tony Hawk's Pro Skater aesthetic - Engaging asynchronous multiplayer Cons: - Souls-style combat

Very fun game so far, it does have some flaws but it's still very early to judge.
Depending on the will the the Dev/Publisher duo to fix those issues, it has potential to be one of the best F2P ps4 game.

Extremely amusing and fun to play. It flawlessly mixes in online play inside the Tower of Barbs, with characters who die appearing as enemy NPCs in your and others' towers. The raiding is a completely unnecessary and annoying mechanic, and the premium currency is there and needed for vital things like storage expansion, but the rest of the game is very fun. Humor relies on things like Uncle Death (the Grim Reaper) riding skateboards, wearing silly glasses and referring to you as "Senpai", and enemies ludicrously transforming into blood geysers after being punched to death.
I say give it a chance; it's free after all.

You might feel like you need to farm a lot or buy expensive breakable equipment but you really don't, just climb the tower, senpai! The item you'll find upstairs might be better than the one you're farming!

Most upgrades are unlocked after the 10th floor, like the pvp, waiting room updates and better characters. Where dark souls story was cryptic, it's the gameplay that is..meaning wikis are sometimes your only alternative to a good instruction manual, too bad.

The asymmetrical online game is also really nice, it feels good to invade people and destroy their base just like it's a pain to be invaded by other characters at every corner. The concept of teams make the whole pvp engaging, your country/state have rivals and winning means big rewards for your team.

You won't enjoy that game if you like narrative games and hate farming, repetitive environment, stiff controls, stamina management and yelling "omg that death was so unfair".

I really enjoy that game and it's free! what's not to love?

I'm really enjoying this game a lot. It does have it's share of AI issues. It's very difficult to agro/pull one bad guy out of a pack to fight one on one. Most of my deaths are to fighting multiple enemies at once. The whole concept of the game is fantastic, haters...hunters...death riding a skateboard.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I haven't even reached Floor 10 yet, because I've been backtracking and going to those other areas off of the main elevator route, but I have to say, that I absolutely love this game. And to be honest, I'm a little obsessed with it. Ever since I started the game, I've been refreshing my browser to see if any new critic reviews pop up that express similar sentiments. At least the user reviews appear to be positive!

I have a large backlog of games (paid AAA titles at that) that I am currently playing through right now, but now they're on the back-burner as I have been obsessed with getting as much time as I can with Let It Die.

I love the art direction, the suspense that comes along with exploring the new floors and the seemingly spontaneous hordes of enemies that chase after you (the panic that brings, the horror), the exceptional soundtrack (god damn that escalator music gives me some sort of nostalgia that I can't pinpoint, not to mention the metal and glitched dark ambient soundscapes), the joy I get in successfully pulling off a RAGE move with a weapon and experiencing other weapons set lists and how those grow depending on how much you use them(!), the freakin' mushroom effects, the quirky characters...I could go on. Everything in this game sets its distinctive tone. This might be the first F2P game I've ever truly enjoyed.

Sure there are some cons: weird controls, heard the multiplayer aspect can be painful when getting raided, but all the positives I've listed outweigh this for me right now. (I have yet to experience what it's like getting raided). And besides, Grasshopper/GungHo might just make this game better over time.

Very much looking forward to seeing if Grasshopper/GungHo can improve upon some of the shortcomings.

Building your team, sending your fighters in other player worlds, fights / raids between countries-states (yay France won 3 times, beware California ;)

I normally stay very far away from free-to-play titles, but after spending a day with this title I think I have finally found a game that fits the model perfectly. This game feels like it was designed by people who enjoy making games; it is enjoyable; and the mechanics feel fair and complementary with the pricing model of micro-transactions.

I only have two concerns about the game:

    1. That content such as monsters and level design will remain the same throughout the game. I have been up to the 5th floor and to some branching-side-floors so far, and they have all been industrial sewer type levels. I hope there is more variety in this tower, since there are 40 floors, not including the branching floors.

    2. That the gameplay will change at higher levels once access to faster projectile guns become available, and that reliance on the insurance system will become the only way to progress through the tower.

Let in Die, this game is for me the biggest surprise in this year. If you like games DS / BB you fell in love with LiD. But warning this game is free to play. This means, you spend more time to progress than peoples who buying coins. In multiplayer you can raid other bases players, but PvP doesn't exist, so definetely this is not pay 2 win.

It is addicting but also easy to stop and take a pause as you need to be really concentrated (like Soulsborne) so I HIGHLY recommend it to all serious gamers. I would say it is one of the best 10 exclusives on PS4 among BB, HZD, Uncharted and God of War.

You have to understand though it is "crappy" on purpose with cheap game-mechanics and designs - which is Suda51's style. Still, this game has some details which is typically Japanese attention to
unnecessary detail - which I love! The "cheap" game-mechanics allows for more content and deepness.
It is the most developer-supported F2P game on PS4 as I understand!

I understand now that this game wouldn't have worked without Free to Play since Kill Coins even though most fans would have wanted a proper release.

Second, This game require no money to win. I haven't paid any real money at all. In fact, I never died to the point that I run out of death metal and need gold to revive.
Third, Paying money won't get you up to higher floor. What you need most are skill and preparation. Money only give you more chance and some space in inventory but if you sucks, then you will still sucks.

The game is fun, combat feels good after you understand mechanic. Music is great as well as casting. Difficulty ? only hard if you get cornered by many enemies. Just don't be reckless to the point that get you in that situation. 90% of my death occurred due to my recklessness. Don't use Darksouls's attitude that you can keep trying until you get good. No ! this game dying means lost gold, lost time. You have to come prepared every time, check info of boss before real fight, watch utube, don't rush things.

The big negative of this game, however, is GRINDING. You will not notice it at first but once you get past 10 floors, this issue will keep popping up and become VERY GRINDING after floor 21+. Because you need materials to upgrade equipment and those material heavily depends on RNG.

Other negatives are NO COOP nor PVP at this moment. Boss fights are easy and become a joke if you abuse system by using some mushrooms. Raiding system still has issues.

Anyway, since this game is Free to Play, I would recommend everyone who like challenging game to try. It is still far from masterpiece but surely great game and has high potential to evolve to become one in the future (if devs do it right)

The game has an amazing aesthetic and tone, character designs are awesome and memorable, the combat is actually satisfying for it's simplicity and the crafting/base management system can hook you for dozens if not hundreds of hours along with it's sometimes relentless difficulty spikes that make you just keep on climbing the looney tower of monsters, zombies, robots and overpowered HATERS.

I usually loath freemium games and I despise online/multiplayer games but for me this is the one exception, I simply couldn't resist to pay for them "Death Metals" (storage expanding and revive on spot currency) because of how addicted the bloody game made me.

Grind your way through tunnel rats, zombies, mazes, tricky platforms to get coins and experience and you have another dungeon crawler. What sets this game apart is that the grinding doesn't feel like a grind. There is never that moment where you get tired of the old "oh great I have to go through this same level yet again to kill another 100 tunnel rats (I say tunnel rats as a cliche dungeon crawler thing). This game is fair as far as free-to-play games. There is no trick to get you started where you eventually have to pay up or wait. It's all about your skill and planning. It seems that paying in this game will leave you actually worse off than not because you end up progressing too fast. There is a lot to do before leveling up to the next tiers and defeating the next boss. It's a game of slow-progression and preparation that takes time and planning. There are no tricks or traps that kill you instantly and ask if you want to pay to proceed. 3) upgrade anything that is available and once you get a few weapons/armor piece to +3 focus on upgrading them until the materials required change.
    4) Max out a Defender/Collector/Attacker and later levels a Luck fighter.
    5) Use TDM to boost your lithium and coins to buy the gear for each trip.
    6) Utilize daily logins/quests to get death metals (lives) and express passes.
    7) Save lives for Mid and Main bosses.
    8) If you buy death metals, use the .99, 4.99 and 9.99 options. The rest are a waste of hard earned cash. You should'nt need more than 50-60 to complete the game. Quests will give you 1 and daily logins will give you 3 a week.
    9) You will die in TDM, it just really depends on if you are lucky to go against a play whose got the same gear.
    10) TDM ranks give you items weekly depends on how well you are doing in each season.
    11) Better gear and fighters are unlocked every twelve or so floors.
    12) After each boss, the next set of floors give you access to higher gear materials.
    Blue=1 Green=2 Black=3 Red=4

    Hope this helps you!

However, there are a TON of great ideas presented in Let it Die!! Like the raid mode, that encourages you to attack people, very much like Mafia Wars, except you actually have to physically fight the other players lobby characters. Which is a stroke of genius, from my perspective.

Let it Die is certainly worth your time to AT LEAST check it out!!

EDIT: After leaving this game along for a few months, I noticed quite a few boosts and extra lives added to my in-game mailbox! I recommend if you are playing this on the cheap; play it for a day or so and then let it sit for month or two; THEN come back. I had up to 25 Death Metals racked up and made it past the second boss section.

(Helpful hint!! BRING A FEW FLAT IRONS as weapons for the fight, it'll save you about 10 or 15 Death Metals)

Nice crazy game of genius Japanese developers. The game is not simple, but addictive. From Suda51 does not happen easy games. Highly recommend, especially since the game is also free)

I've put about 130 or so hours into the game so far and have really enjoyed my time with it.

Besides the tower and the challenges within, there is also Tokyo Death Metro, a mode where you raid other players' "waiting rooms" to obtain currency and other prizes.

First of all, this game is a grind. If you aren't into grinding, this game is not for you. Reach a new floor and it's kicking your ass? Grind for materials to upgrade your gear. Out of Kill Coins or SP Lithium? Grind Tokyo Death Metro for more. I'm not a player who particularly loves grinding or sees inherent value in it, but it feels woven into the design of this game in a way that I find agreeable. It never feels like an arbitrary roadblock to stop me from progressing too quickly, it's just a constant part of the game and either you are into it, or you aren't.

I'm into the grind, as it makes Let It Die a game I can enjoy on a daily basis. Whether I'm looking for a challenge or just something to chill out and listen to podcasts to, Let It Die is there. A number of the negative reviews complaining about the microtransactions seem to be from players who aren't into the grind, which is totally understandable. As some others have said, "Free to play Dark Souls" is a bad description of the game. While the gameplay bears some passing resemblance, the gameplay loop is totally different.

If you're still interested, give it a shot. It's free, there's nothing else like it on the market, and if you feel like you *have* to buy Death Metals to advance, you'll know that the game is not for you.

I spent over half of my time as a free player and never felt pressured into spending money. If the game wins you over and you're willing to support it with your dollars, I would recommend the Express Pass as well as any deep discounts to Death Metals.

Really good game, great gameplay, pretty good graphics and many more reasons why you should play it. Only controls could be better, but anyway it is a really good game

This is such a good game. But it's very grindy.
It also has a great community.
It's already mid 2021 when I write this, the game is way over it's peak. The devs don't do much about the game anymore. No new stuff, only old stuff that gets recycled. I have +3300h into this game. Don't think I have ever played a game as much as Let It Die. I love it. But I also hate it. :-) My biggest

My biggest pet peeve are the long loading times on my PS4 (not a pro).

Bottom line, I recommend it to everyone who can handle a grindy game.
You don't have to spend real money to win in this game.
Real money only gets you there faster. But if you can handle the farming, you can play this game without spending a cent.

There’s a level of complexity and polish that belies the lo-fi visuals, the gore, the bonkers story and the motley crew of nutbags that you encounter. Under new ownership, Grasshopper has – dare we say it? – grown up. [March 2016, p70]

Let It Die is flawed, but it’s perhaps the best free-to-play game ever made on the PS4. It’s different, daring, and occasionally impossible. But it’s also a must play for fans of the roguelike gene.

It's lovably shonky in the classic Grasshopper style, but this is a game of surprisingly layered depth and subtlety, and the studio's best game in yonks. [Feb 2017, p.85]
