This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Looking to change up the pace? Start Journey, turn up the ambience, and let yourself go.

If you want a unique, "minimalist" gaming experience that ranks closely with the likes of legendary games like 'Shadow of the Colossus' or 'Ico' then look no further. While Journey is short (a playthrough maxes out at 2 hours at best) it is made so intentionally. Here's why: by picking up the controller and beginning your adventure, you're going to have a moment in a similar vein to an attraction at a theme park -- an experience. Enjoying the visuals, the peculiar mechanics, and the underlying mythos of a world that sunk itself into sand over ages of war is key, as the game is tightly crafted with a goal to be emotionally engaging.

The single player experience is of course, natural and enjoyable. However, thatgamecompany (the developer of Journey) created an online function that separates it from the dozens of art house experiences in the gaming market. It is both fortunate and unfortunate that this feature had to be revealed, because my first time playing I had no idea the other Journeyer I encountered was a real person until the credits rolled. That was a magical experience because the game puts you together without any inkling of what is happening, who this is, and what you are to do together.

Beneath the mystery and especially the sparse game controls, lies a surprising amount of things to learn and do. The mechanics of the cooperative function aren't taught to you -- you need to discover them with your partner. While much of what you can do with the other player is optional, learning them together (or teaching them, if you already found them with another partner) is an absolutely endearing "hidden" feature to the game.

Deeper than it seems to let on, Journey is simply a game that everyone needs to try once. If you're skeptical of spending the money on it, do what you can to play it elsewhere first. Gameplay videos don't do it justice, you've got to try it for yourself.

Not everyone is going to appreciate what Journey has to offer, but by playing a solid run with a partner that you've learned to communicate with in your own way, you'll see a piece of gaming history that is sure to inspire many countless improvements and spiritual followers. Without a doubt, Journey has taken a broad step to redefine what it means to feel, discover, and appreciate while you play video games. I give Journey a 10 out of 10.

A great game to be remember forever, for being diferent what we are used to play, nice experience. This game surprise, a diferent way to play, that make me feel happy, we get boring some times from shooter games as Call of Duty or GTAV, this one catch me because of that a diferent way to play, awsome graphics and many things to explore.

Very simple, very beautiful, and very well made. It's also very short, but that's a minor complaint for a game that you can pick up for a few quid. Well worth a few hours of you time.

As much as I loved this game, I could not give it a 10.
The first run was very memorable and breathtaking. It was just too short. I hate myself for saying this because I do not like to rate a game on its size...especially a $15 game. I was awed and mesmerized for 2 hours, at the end of the journey, I was simply not satisfied...

Part of that for me was probably because the actual platforming gameplay itself did not offer me replay value, yeah sure I wanted to collect the stuff I missed but I felt the magic was gone after the first play through.
That said, the $15 and 2 hours spent on this game was absolutely worth it.

It's difficult to define Journey, it's so different from anything else. I can understand people who say it's overrated / boring, because it's so unique. Players who just play shooters / action action games might not enjoy this gameplay since it has absolutely nothing to do with most games. It won't provide the "adrenaline", fast paced intense action.

Beautiful simplistic original graphics combined with elegant smooth music and a mute story that could represent the meaning of life. That's my best attempt to describe journey.

The game I'd compare this to would be Shadow of the Colossus (SOTC). While not as good as SOTC, it's not that far off. You have to factor in that this is a shorter game with a smaller price tag. So I'm awarding it a 10/10 bearing that in mind. If it had been twice as long, it could very well have equalled SOTC.

The art style is breathtaking, the desert sand shines radiantly in the sun, and all the animations are natural and fluid. Reason 2: The soundtrack is incredible. It's an amazing totally orchestrated set of songs that fit in perfectly with each level in the game. Reason 3: It makes you think. There aren't a whole lot of games that make you think out there. But this one makes you think about existence without a single word of dialogue in the game. The game's story is entirely portrayed through imagery. It's an incredibly simple and slow game, which may be a turnoff for some people, but if you give Journey a chance and take it for what it is, a journey through existence, it will make you feel things you never thought a person could feel.

I may be exaggerating slightly, but you know what, so are the negative reviewers.

*A 9.5 from me, as the PS4 version doesn't seem to take full advantage of the PS4's technical capabilities, but still an outstanding game that stands the test of time. You'll not regret playing this if you've missed out on last gen's.

Journey is a beautiful gaming experience, its arts in its pure form, I recommend the use of a good headset and don't let it go of the controller until you finish your experience. The simplistic concept the amazing sound and game mechanics is an achievement that I wish in most video gaming entertainment could make nowadays. Is Thatgamecompany greatest achievement so far!!!

The visuals are stunning and the Journey brings you to another state of mind. It can turn out different every time you play. Mostly i did watch my friends play this from the corners of my eyes in the PS3 era but i did buy The remaster on PS4. I do not know why, but the end didn't hit me very hard, and in fact almost felt a little anti-climactic. I was happy, but not elated. It also didn't help my play-through that the other players I came across kind of ran off and did their own things. The art style is beyond beautiful, and very appealing to the eye, and the game play is fun and simple. I would recommend this game to anyone.

I don’t even think this counts as a “game”. After 5 minutes I thought it was complete garbage. I decided to play it through though as I knew it was a short game. After I was done, I wanted to play it again. The aspect of meeting a “companion” and journeying together is an interesting concept.

After suffering through the crashes, and replaying chapters over and over that loved to crash near the end of the chapter, not the start, or beginning, but the bloody end. I have to say the game is stunning, it's nearly a masterpiece for what it is, a journey, albeit a short one, but a beautiful one that should not be missed. That being said, until there is a patch and the issues are resolved, save your money so you can experience this game start to finish without issues because it does hinder the experience. Not only that, but developers who release broken products and do not fix them in a timely fashion do not deserve your hard earned money. Research first, make sure the crashes are fixed, if not. Move on and wait for it to hit PS+.

    NO SPOILER SECTION:
So this is a game in which you go on a journey of your own(no **** The graphics are simple yet interesting and beautiful, especially in some parts of the game where the reflection of the sun is shown on the sand. The game is long enough for you to get really deep into it and short enough so that you don't become bored. The mechanics are simple and really fun to play with. The story is intense even tho no one says a word. Everything is easily understandable and really beautiful and fun. The game runs smoothly and without bugs. The only and i repeat THE ONLY bug I found is that when the game got out of the cutscene my character stood up and then sat down again. And that's it. If you are thinking of buying this game I highly recommend it. You won't regret it.
    SPOILER SECTION:
So I didn't know a single thing about this game. When I saw some pictures I thought it is yet another platformer. The part that especially blew my mind was the multiplayer, I thought this was a single-player game. For first 10 minutes of multiplayer I thought that it was an NPC, and not a person. Other players move so smoothly that you won't even think that it's a person(like me). I played the game once and haven't found a troll in the game(multiplayer). Every player I played with was cooperative and fun to play with. When the final cutscene was showing all the places I felt blown away. As I was seeing all the places I past I felt like I was watching a journal of a perfect story. Something so simple just blew my mind. From graphics to multiplayer and story everything just blew my mind. I was stunned by the quality of the game and I don't know if it's just me.
    FINAL REVIEW:
JOURNEY IS A DIFFERENT TYPE OF GAME. SOMETHING THAT HAS TO BE PLAYED IN ORDER TO FULLY UNDERSTAND WHY IT'S GETTING ALL THE HYPE AROUND IT. SOMETHING THAT IS JUST SO SIMPLE BUT YET SO PERFECT. UNFORTUNATELY AFTER THE FIRST PLAY, YOU CANNOT PLAY IT AGAIN WITH THE SAME FEELING. IT'S JUST THE GAME THAT IS BEST PLAYED WITHOUT ANY KNOWLEDGE OF IT AND IN WHICH THE FIRST TIME IS THE BEST.

At the time I started playing the game I was not surprised enough by the visuals! I was struggling to walk as fast as I could in the punishing dunes. As my journey continued, I started noticing an emergent satisfaction with the conceptual art; my surroundings were astonishing! And the music which is the feature I loved the most about the game is superb! I was also attracted by the constant changes in the atmosphere, every aspect of nature is so well balanced to bring such a comforting setting! The blinding sandstorms, the windy currents, the flashy reflection of the sunlight in the golden-like sand, the coldness in the dark caves, the freezing blizzards, and above any natural interpretation, I could stand adoring the harmonious magic that surrounds you when flying the skies!
Journey is a passive game which doesn't demand that much tactics or awareness, it's all about enjoying the views. I didn't know that until too late when after a couple of tries I was frustrated on the peacefulness of the setting. At the middle of the game I paused (which you actually can't, the character just sits down staring at beautiful place in which he/she is) and breathed for a moment, accepting the fact that this game isn't for speedruns, neither accomplishments. "It's all about enjoying the view" I repeated myself.
I finally reached my destination, amazed by the conclusion, it couldn't end better. This is when I realized the game has it's purpose, to make the player seek the mountain because he's/she's commended too, but at the very end of the game, each one of them had his/her personal reasons, making all the game an analogy in which everyone seeks "his/her mountain".
Another big surprise at the end of the game [NO SPOILERS] was the message after the credits saying: "Players met" and then I realized I wasn't there alone, those anonymous characters showing up randomly where actually people online playing aside me! I was astonished .
If everything I just said isn't enough to grant this game a solid score, I'll leave my impression open to discuss. I started hating the game, criticizing reviewers by their lack of objectivity by thinking "maybe they were all high", by the end of the journey I proved my self wrong, this game has a long-run crescent satisfaction, full of surprises that you may not even notice until you are dinning, or working, or reviewing.
Games like this remind me that guns, wheels and game balls aren't the only genders out there. There should be more devs interested in representing life as its own, as beautiful as it is, as beautiful as Journey is.

When I first played Journey on the PS3, I couldn't get into it. I didn't get the point. It felt slow and unnecessary. So I gave it a poor review and moved on. It was free on PS+ for the PS4 last year, so I downloaded it and kept it tucked away in the games library, until after completing Nier Automata and needed something to fill the gap between the next big game.

    So I started to play.

It was free on PS+ for the PS4 last year, so I downloaded it and kept it tucked away in the games library, until after completing Nier Automata and needed something to fill the gap between the next big game.

So I started to play. Taking in the visuals, the sound, the atmosphere and suddenly it clicked. Journey is what it says on the box, a Journey. It's not about anything more than reaching your spiritual destination and taking in the wonders along the way. The game is a build up to a beautiful and mesmerising last act complemented by a haunting and moving soundtrack that (if invested in the game) can bring you to tears by the end. The sound track builds from calm flutes and woodwind instruments to a beautiful flowing and powerful crescendo using a wide variety of classic western and eastern instruments. The soundtrack as a standalone is worth purchasing.

Journey really is a special experience.

Journey is a piece of digital art, an experience. A small bit of escapism from reality. It is a relaxing experience, refreshing and thoughtful. Many modern games are all about stress: fast reactions, battles, violence and explosions. Journey is a rare break from the norm, a moment of relflection and peace. After playing I felt content, happy and warm.
Along my Journey I met other players in the world I traveled with some for a while and simply sat down and reflected with others, one I communicated with through sounds, it was a very unique experience.

The graphics are stunning at times, they are simple but the use of color and lighting add an artistic depth to the imagery that leaves a lasting impression. At one point the camera changes to a side angle while sliding down a sand dune into an ancient building, the sun is setting and the light shimmers off the ground making it look like water, if you took a screen shot and printed it, it would make a gorgeous framed picture.

As a game, it's basic, there's no skill needed but that's not the point, it's more like an interactive piece of art, the trophies are annoying, It's unfair to throw in silly trophies like finding 10 creatures or a desert flower. It breaks the experience and I didn't want it to be broken for the sake a boring collection trophy.

Journey needs to be judged different to the normal game type. That's why I can happily give the game a 9. Compared to masterpieces like The Witcher 3 or Dark Souls this may seem strange to rate a two hour game a 9, but in it's own category it achieves brilliance.

Journey will be one of those games you will mention when discussion games as art and will stay with you as a a great gaming memory.

Journey can be summed up in one sentence "Ohh look how pretty it is."
Journey is designed to be a relaxing game which doesn't stress you with difficult gameplay mechanics or any gameplay at all. In that respect it succeeds but it is effectively an interactive movie, except this is shorter than a movie with only about 1.5 hours of "Game-play" I put gameplay in quotation marks because

In that respect it succeeds but it is effectively an interactive movie, except this is shorter than a movie with only about 1.5 hours of "Game-play" I put gameplay in quotation marks because saying Journey has gameplay is like saying Ride to Hell had an engaging story. It IS relaxing and it IS pretty but that is it, there is no re-playability, no fun and interesting mechanics and no reason to really buy this unless you one of those artistic types who cares more about how something looks rather than how it works. You're just along for the ride and have no real control in the direction, I would have more fun by walking somewhere.
This game gets an extra point from me because it was the only game that I fell asleep while playing, I felt fresh and rejuvenated the next day because I clocked in over 9 hours of sleep, so that's something. But in the end this isn't a game it's an interactive movie and not worthy of all its praise.

The game does an incredible job at evoking emotions through the way you interact with the world and other players you may, or may not see in the game as they go on their own journey. As I progressed through the game, I found myself so in the moment all the way through and I didn't want to stop playing, and when I finally got to the end, I was almost sad that it was over. This game is the embodiment of the expression, "its about the journey, not the destination." an expression that people may or may not agree on depending on your view on life, but after playing this game, I'm sure you will believe it. there are lots of games that have gotten me to tear up a little bit out of sadness, but very few have ever got me to shed tears of joy. This game does everything it sets out to do perfectly without a single flaw in my eye. for those looking for a challenge or steller gameplay, you wont find it here. For those looking for a meaningful and unforgettable experience, play it. not to say the game play isn't good, it adds a lot to the game, very relaxing and feels very natural, but its not the reason the game is so good. The reason this game is so great is because of how well it evokes emotions with such a simple story and game mechanics, relying on its visuals and the context of the player's role within the world. If you enjoy this game as much as I do for these reason's I would highly suggest playing other games like shadow of the colossus and Ico on playstaion 2 or the ported version of these games on playstation 3. I cannot praise this game enough for being so simple and yet leaving such a huge impact on me. I don't think everyone is going to necessarily get what I got out of this game, because the enjoyment of this game is completely based on how much the game resonates with you. If the game doesn't speak to you then all your left with is the gameplay which is fun and relaxing but in itself nothing really special. This isn't really a flaw, because it is pretty clear that this game was meant to be looked at as a piece of art. Even though the Mona Lisa is undeniably one of the greatest paintings in the world, it literally means nothing to me and that's fine, if this game means nothing to you that's also fine, but you cant deny that it is one of the most beautiful games of the last generation of consoles. Beautiful soundtrack, breathtaking art style and visuals. Even though the plot of this short game is very mysterious and definitely requires some digging to piece together, the sheer experience that this game delivers without a single line of spoken dialogue (A lot like Brothers, actually) is incredible and needs to be praised. The PS3 potential was seen through Journey when it came out and that was what made the relevance so much higher, however bringing it to PS4 the amazing visuals is well...expected. This is nothing special from the original, if you already own it for PS3, just play through that copy again. This was a strange move for the company to bring when it favorably could have been a sequel to Journey. The port generation is getting old to me, polishing up a Greatest Hits game that you may buy for $19.99 or lower and charging double is just bad business. Please do what Tearaway did, we loved Tearaway, they created a sequel...If Tearaway was ported to PS4 it would have been just the same...which doesn't exactly make my wallet shoot open. Journey is a very fun, amazing visual adventure, I am not rating the original PS3 version a 5/10, this is purely the port to PS4 and graded for the reasons I listed above. Expand

A game with no dialogue, no words, not even a sound resembling speech coming from any of the characters, it wasnt even that long, and it made me cry.
its so beautiful, its just that one game you'll never forget and when you hear of it, or see it again, you just smile and remember it because it was that great.

Game with an incredible artistic section, the truth is I am surprised because I did not know this game and I played it at once. To put a snag, I do not like to rate a game 'by weight' but it was too short. However, recommended.

The game is simplistic and minimalistic in many ways, yet still managed to entertain me for its full duration. You play as a shrouded, red-cloaked figure who embarks on a journey through a vast desert landscape. You traverse through a number of different environments in order to reach the top of a nearby mountain, which is the destination of your journey. The multiplayer aspect of this game allows you to see other players also embark on their journeys towards the same goal. You cannot talk or interact with them, but you may choose to join them, and complete your journey together.
The game is undeniably beautiful, and while playing I found myself pausing multiple times, simply to look around and take in the wide landscapes around me. Each level contains collectibles called Symbols, and secrets called Glyphs, which are a joy to find and collect. The reward for doing this is equally satisfying.

Journey only sets out to do a few things as a game, but it perfectly nails all of those points. My only gripe with the game while playing was that it could sometimes be a bit tedious to walk long distances, to get from one side of a level to another. Especially in the third desert level there are some long walks that take some time. However, other than that, I do not regret my time spent playing this game in the slightest, and I look forward to revisiting it once more at a later time.

Worthless game I've ever played in my life, I'm dead serious. You just walk from point A to point B in a desert, sometimes there are ruins around and a dude joins you to overcome the tasks (and by tasks I mean: WALKING). A complete joke! I got this trash as the free game of the month at PS Plus and even then I feel like I was cheated. I can see why this gets positive reviews, for sure. The graphics for the environments are often amazing and the music is incredible. I also really liked that the puzzles are fairly easy and the game is not overly long. But I'm not a huge fan of the inferred and artsy story. That is very specific to me, so most people will (clearly) love it and I would never argue with that. I felt the sameI can see why this gets positive reviews, for sure. I felt the same way about Ori and the Blind Forest (Although this isn't nearly as difficult). Beautiful art and music, but a story that tries to be emotional by giving you no dialogue and explaining the whole thing visually. Expand

This is the last game I played in which I had a truly joyful gaming experience. Beautiful to look at, fun to play and just all around sublime. If you can't find fun or some delight in playing this, then you are likely dead inside.

Masterful storytelling. Not a single word was needed to tell the story, the environment and music did more than enough.

Wonderful game. The only down side is that it ends! I can highly recommend the game, it is well worth its price point and relevant even years after its release.

However, gameplay wise it feels a barebones version of Uncharted game without shooting. Which sometimes works and sometimes feels like a PS2 era game.
Also, stylistically the game isn't coherent enough. It's a mesh of Shadow of the Colossus, Zelda Breath of the Wild and INSIDE. And all this other games felt much more fresh and directed in their design.
So, whatever. It's a great 2-3hr game. Which doesn't overstay its welcome. And at peaks it transcends to pure joy. But 50% of the game you can see a gamedesigner's work through stitches. It's still a product of love.

    dude, wtf is this???
what a magnificent journey (pun very intended)
it's beautiful (and short) enough for you to want to finish more than once in a day. it's not a game, it's really an experience. more than most anything i've ever did. it kind of reminds me of shadow of the colossus without the colossus? i don't even know what to say about it, i just wish i ahd played this sooner.

I’ve had a fleeting interest in “Journey” for quite some time now. If you guys have followed my game reviews up to this point, you know that I’ve enjoyed indie games like “RiME” and “Fe” a lot, and I’ve heard that games like those possibly may not exist without “Journey” (in fact, many previous said that “RiME” pretty much wore the “Journey” influence on its sleeve, and now that I’veI’ve had a fleeting interest in “Journey” for quite some time now. If you guys have followed my game reviews up to this point, you know that I’ve enjoyed indie games like “RiME” and “Fe” a lot, and I’ve heard that games like those possibly may not exist without “Journey” (in fact, many previous said that “RiME” pretty much wore the “Journey” influence on its sleeve, and now that I’ve played both, I can see it), and if nothing else, “Journey” seemed like a game that had quite an impact on several modern games, specifically several indie games today. Recently, the game became free on the PlayStation 4, and morbid curiosity got the best of me. I wanted to give the game a shot, and see if I can feel its influence in games like “RiME” and “Fe.” And I most certainly did, but…is it wrong that this game left me somewhat conflicted? Did playing games like “RiME” and “Fe” beforehand morph my perspective on this game, given that I’d already experienced what it had to offer in other titles? I’m not sure, but I definitely walked away from this feeling conflicted.
Don’t get me wrong, “Journey” does a lot of things amazingly, specifically in regards to its art design. This game has been talked about quite a bit in how it pushes the “gaming as an art form” debate, and I can totally see why: the visuals are absolutely stunning, the sweeping landscapes are quite a wonder to behold, the score is pretty beautiful, and there are plenty of genuinely thrilling moments in the game. The writing and the way it’s presented with no words is fantastic as well, I think the game is perfectly accessible and easy to get into, and I think the way the game uses multiplayer, where you come across a player that’s randomly connected to your game, is really intuitive and it adds to the emotion that the game works to elicit. In regards to the experience, I can absolutely say that “Journey” is fantastic, and it’s something well-worth experiencing. In fact, you’ll probably be talking about it a lot even after playing through it once.
All that said, the game is held back to me because, while it’s a fantastic “experience,” I can’t say it’s great as a “game.” In fact, I’m not sure I can totally even categorize it as a “game.” There’s interactivity to it, sure, but the gameplay as a whole is very minimal, and I think that can be the game’s biggest pratfall. The developers of the game were clearly more focused on the artistic wizardry and sophisticated storytelling with this game, which is fine, but I’m personally a “gameplay first” player, and when the gameplay doesn’t stand as tall as said sophisticated story, I think it falls a bit short. I get it, it’s called “Journey” because, of course, it’s not about the destination, it’s about the “Journey,” and that’s fantastic, but with the lack of interactive, short length, and overly-easy gameplay, I found myself wondering if all of this could’ve worked well as an animated short project, or as a stage orchestra with the visuals of the game playing in the background, as opposed to a game. And, while I didn’t want my praises and critiques to be comparisons to “RiME” and “Fe,” since it’s important to judge the game on its own merits and not by comparison, I want to bring them up for a minute, because I think the reason why I enjoyed games like “RiME” and “Fe” as much as I did is because, yes, they are also great experiences with beautiful art design, but I personally also felt engaged with the gameplay in both of those titles, and I felt like they both remembered that they were games just as much as they were experiences. With “Journey,” though, it’s all about the experience, and the gameplay feels tertiary to it all, unfortunately.
Overall, I wanted to love “Journey,” and honestly, as an experience, it’s fantastic. Hell, the artistry of the game kinda makes me want to go back and play it again. But, from a gameplay perspective, the game doesn’t match up as well, and it doesn’t feel like the “masterpiece” that I’ve been told it is. Gameplay aside, I definitely recommend that you, if nothing else, experience “Journey” in some way. If it’s by way of watching a YouTube video, watching a friend play, or just doing some general research on it, I absolutely recommend you experience the game. Just make sure you know thyself and what you like in a “game” before picking up a controller and playing it.
Final rating: 7 out of 10 “Good”

This is a prime example of a good idea executed well. Beautiful visuals and music, good controls and a great gameplay flow. Would probably rate it even higher but it's so damn short - will take you about 1 - 2 hours to complete, depending on your playstyle.

It’s as much a part of the PlayStation legacy as Ico is, as Shadow Of The Colossus is. Its place in PlayStation legend goes beyond its similar presentation and taps into something more sublime, something more exhilarating.
