Very nice indie game. The multiplayer is awesome, you dont know who you're playing with, but you feel a connection with this person. The scenarios are very beautiful and the gameplay is simple and fun.

After years of reading rave reviews and suggestions that Journey is "one of the greatest games ever made", I finally played this game and I feel like I'm taking crazy pills because it's one of the most bland, boring, unrewarding experiences I've ever sat through. It's visually pretty enough, and the music is very nice. But aside of that I have nothing good to say about it. It's horrible as a game. The gameplay is mostly walking forward and nothing else. There's no real challenge, no bosses to overcome, no real puzzles or problems to solve, no story or plot to be had, and it's extremely short, it took me less than two hours to finish.

I don't recommend it, and I cannot understand the hype and critical acclaim surrounding it.

One takes one a half hora to complete It, there are no voice acting, no tutorial,s no text, no fights, no maps. But It doesn't need it to give you the message. Really good game.

Journey is a very simple and short game, it tells a story with no words and the gameplay is also as simple as the story it self. I’ve had a fleeting interest in “Journey” for quite some time now. If you guys have followed my game reviews up to this point, you know that I’ve enjoyed indie games like “RiME” and “Fe” a lot, and I’ve heard that games like those possibly may not exist without “Journey” (in fact, many previous said that “RiME” pretty much wore the “Journey” influence on its sleeve, and now that I’veI’ve had a fleeting interest in “Journey” for quite some time now. If you guys have followed my game reviews up to this point, you know that I’ve enjoyed indie games like “RiME” and “Fe” a lot, and I’ve heard that games like those possibly may not exist without “Journey” (in fact, many previous said that “RiME” pretty much wore the “Journey” influence on its sleeve, and now that I’ve played both, I can see it), and if nothing else, “Journey” seemed like a game that had quite an impact on several modern games, specifically several indie games today. Recently, the game became free on the PlayStation 4, and morbid curiosity got the best of me. I wanted to give the game a shot, and see if I can feel its influence in games like “RiME” and “Fe.” And I most certainly did, but…is it wrong that this game left me somewhat conflicted? Did playing games like “RiME” and “Fe” beforehand morph my perspective on this game, given that I’d already experienced what it had to offer in other titles? I’m not sure, but I definitely walked away from this feeling conflicted.
Don’t get me wrong, “Journey” does a lot of things amazingly, specifically in regards to its art design. This game has been talked about quite a bit in how it pushes the “gaming as an art form” debate, and I can totally see why: the visuals are absolutely stunning, the sweeping landscapes are quite a wonder to behold, the score is pretty beautiful, and there are plenty of genuinely thrilling moments in the game. The writing and the way it’s presented with no words is fantastic as well, I think the game is perfectly accessible and easy to get into, and I think the way the game uses multiplayer, where you come across a player that’s randomly connected to your game, is really intuitive and it adds to the emotion that the game works to elicit. In regards to the experience, I can absolutely say that “Journey” is fantastic, and it’s something well-worth experiencing. In fact, you’ll probably be talking about it a lot even after playing through it once.
All that said, the game is held back to me because, while it’s a fantastic “experience,” I can’t say it’s great as a “game.” In fact, I’m not sure I can totally even categorize it as a “game.” There’s interactivity to it, sure, but the gameplay as a whole is very minimal, and I think that can be the game’s biggest pratfall. The developers of the game were clearly more focused on the artistic wizardry and sophisticated storytelling with this game, which is fine, but I’m personally a “gameplay first” player, and when the gameplay doesn’t stand as tall as said sophisticated story, I think it falls a bit short. I get it, it’s called “Journey” because, of course, it’s not about the destination, it’s about the “Journey,” and that’s fantastic, but with the lack of interactive, short length, and overly-easy gameplay, I found myself wondering if all of this could’ve worked well as an animated short project, or as a stage orchestra with the visuals of the game playing in the background, as opposed to a game. And, while I didn’t want my praises and critiques to be comparisons to “RiME” and “Fe,” since it’s important to judge the game on its own merits and not by comparison, I want to bring them up for a minute, because I think the reason why I enjoyed games like “RiME” and “Fe” as much as I did is because, yes, they are also great experiences with beautiful art design, but I personally also felt engaged with the gameplay in both of those titles, and I felt like they both remembered that they were games just as much as they were experiences. With “Journey,” though, it’s all about the experience, and the gameplay feels tertiary to it all, unfortunately.
Overall, I wanted to love “Journey,” and honestly, as an experience, it’s fantastic. Hell, the artistry of the game kinda makes me want to go back and play it again. But, from a gameplay perspective, the game doesn’t match up as well, and it doesn’t feel like the “masterpiece” that I’ve been told it is. Gameplay aside, I definitely recommend that you, if nothing else, experience “Journey” in some way. If it’s by way of watching a YouTube video, watching a friend play, or just doing some general research on it, I absolutely recommend you experience the game. Just make sure you know thyself and what you like in a “game” before picking up a controller and playing it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nada... Absolutamente nada... Expand

This game is a truely masterpiece! An amazing art!

Everything in the game is at its best, graphic is great, the music is like a voice from heaven, control and camera are smooth and satisfying, the story is short and simple but full of emotions.

It has been made by a group of artists. I was crying at the end and I will never forget this masterpiece.

There are several game design choices that don't make much sense and make the game frustrating or annoying. For example, the fact that you need to "recharge" your scarf to jump (until you get the white robes), or the sentinels/guardians (which are just annoying). The Snow level is also too long and annoying, with the character walking so slowly and getting pushed back by the blizzard.

All in all, the game isn't horrible but I don't think it qualifies as a good game. An interesting "experience" maybe, for people who may be looking for such experiences in video games.

Note for trophy hunters : This game is short and easy, and the trophies are fairly simple, but the multiplayer ones may prove to be tedious since you don't know who you're gonna get paired with and what they will decide to do.

Anyways, I failed the multiplayer aspect of the game, didn't really enjoy the gameplay, or story (if there is one), but liked the visuals and loved the music so overall the experience was okay, no idea why I had to journey to an upside-down cameltoe, and honestly think it might have been better with a narrator just to understand what the hell was the point.

All this story tells you is that I can't say that Journey impacted me the way it did to that many players back then, but even then i have to commend the developers for making this incredible experience, even if it is short and not very replay value apart from trophy hunting. The game looks absolutely amazing, the sounds, music, everything just sort of fuses together. I remember comparing Abzu to Fantasia, and that doubles for Journey even more. I can say if you have the chance play this game, it is a very fascinating experience, even if you get to it late like i did, sometimes, the "Journey" is worth it. Expand
