Expand

Combat is terrible, dodge is pointless. Story is boring, climbing is painful. Selective when you can and can't climb but inconsistent through the game.

Painfully slow animations, just not a good time. Pit challenges that start before the screen even comes up.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Horizon Forbidden West is a sad example how a sequel should not look like.

To begin with positives, HFW puts a stronger emphasis on side characters and their development. Sadly, none of them reaches the point of likeability (except for Sylens, ironically). But still it is a welcome improvement.

This concludes pros (sadly), now let's sum some negatives.

Visually and graphically, the game is great. Shame the base PS4 can't handle it. Though it runs on stable 30 fps it constantly loads in textures.

The developers tried to improve close combat with combos but unfortunately the combat feels extremely clumsy and difficult to master. There are plenty of games that do close combat way better. God of War, SW Jedi Fallen Order, Ghost of Tsushima, from the top of my head.
Ranged combat also feels different compared to the HZD. Arrows won't hit an enemy that's 'too far' from you, concentration (slow down time) seems nerfed, it's harder to hit weak spots.

Unlike in HZD, here you can pick as much supplies as you can because they will get sent to your stash where you can replenish them later when you'll run short of them. What I cannot comprehend is why you can carry in your inventory just 7 volatiles and other materials that are important for crafting op ammo at once while you have like over 150 in your stash. That's beyond retarded.

Skill trees in this game are atrocious. In HZD they were simple and useful, here the trees are full of useless bs. And on top of that, the trees are so zoomed in you spend lightyears menuing in there.
Levelling up outfits, pouches and weapons will be locked out for you since you need super rare machine parts or hides which you of course can't buy cuz why so? Keep your 30K metal shards and use them for nothing.

The developers for some unreasonable reason decided to reduce prompt fields which means you have to rape a person first when you want to speak with them or hug a fireplace before saving. The worst situations are when you want to use silent strike but instead you end up just smacking the enemy. Also pretty bad when you're trying to override a door with R2 and you end up brandishing with your spear.

Story of this game is something that disappointed me more than I had expected. To be honest I don't think highly of HZD's story and frankly didn't have my hopes up for HFW but this is quite a banger. The story trailers were deceptive, to begin with. Showing story content that was never in the actual game or the blight which turned out to be such a side fart. The story diverted from this to some sci-fi horsecrap with 1000yo (cuz advanced tech, yk), flying, gay-dressed, cartoonishly evil folk that are just there to eradicate life on Earth and to be eradicated by Aloy.

The sequel baiting is even more impudent here than it was in HZD. It almost feels like the game was cut in half and it will continue in HFW part II.
The storyline is getting suspiciously similar to Mass Effect (a much better game btw) but done wrong. In Mass Effect decisions matter (at least a bit lmao) but here you get like 5 moments when you can choose a dialogue option (which is a great decrease from HZD) but it makes no difference at all.

As if it's not bad enough, the story is brimming with cringe such as "I'm with child" (after 2 months or so of knowing each other), trans Tommy Wiseau, Tilda expressing love to Aloy a then instantly trying to kill her and other.

But what you can expect from a game with character names like Varl (a testicle in cz), Rukka (a hand), Dekka (a blanket) or Boomer? The whole Tenakth tribe is poorly handled. Starting with the retarded tribe name, their first names where you just double some consonants to make it look exotic and ending with their silly design. Dull face paints, clown-like hair, etc.

I'm no Horizon lore fandomist but there are plenty of plotholes such as "Rost didn't really know anything outside the Embrace" even though we know he was in the Forbidden West (like wtf?) or "For the first time in my life I don't feel alone" (Aloy about Beta) which is contradictory to how importantly Rost's role in Aloy's upbringing is portrayed. And finally how every tribe speaks 21st century AmE but have developed new first names and other names like "Kulrut". How else would Tilda understand them, right?

In conclusion, HFW continues to mock religion maybe even more than HZD did since almost every character has 'primitive' beliefs in various gods which work for Aloy as a micro anger trigger.

The concept of this game is genius but it is executed as poorly as it could've been.

P.S. It is confirmed Elisabet was a lesbian which makes Aloy gay (otherwise it would anger the community). Therefore I'm looking forward to seeing some clony kissing with Beta while fighting the Reapers in the next game, since we've already had one needless scene of that kind. (That is if the westoid 'culture' will 'progress' enough when the third game comes out of the closet)

The game looks AMAZING in PS4, but it gets lost with the details.

The story is just not interesting, as well as all of the characters that you meet in the entire game. Aloy acts with a moral superiority with everyone that makes the main character hateful.
The game has a lot of glitches, puzzles and platforming, all of them are so tedious and a way to add extra time that are a big bunch of crap.
The quantity of icons in the map are just crazy, bonfires to save the game every 100 steps.
They picked all the bad stuff that Ubisoft's open world games have.
Now I can compare HFW with Days Gone, and DG is much better than this.

The bad or less good is the story which is much worse than the first bare bones one without the amazing audio tape stories and suprise twist. The characters are better than the first forgettable ones but still awful. Elements of the new gameplay ate fussy and overly complicated or grindy at times. There are few new dinosaurs and instead lots of issues especially the older ps4. The cost of the game as many paid more for less. Possibly some of the ingame politics and the gross Sony tree planting scheme whicb admirable is a joke compared to their overall c02 output as a company. Lack of any innovation or risks or new ideas of note.

It might look like there is more complaints but in the grand scheme of things they only stop a good game being great again. If you liked the original it's more of the same. But if you have a choice or just played the original then I recommend you start with that and the excellent dlc.

    7.5 / 10 fix the glitches 8/10

    - The world has a lot of side activities but doesn't take up time like other open world games. The side-quests are very extensive and you won't find the primitive 'go to A, bring B, come back' out of a deeper context.
    Cons:
    - COMBAT. Combat is just awful in this game. It's not satisfying, just annoying. You don't feel the character skill progress because if any type of opponent was a challenge at the beginning of the game, he will remain a challenge until the end. The opponents still have a huge advantage over Aloy. It's very easy to get surrounded and then the Machines just throw you over the rocks and you can't do anything - running or dodging won't help you, because you are constantly shooting at you, often stunning Aloy. The only way is to spam the button to use medicinal plants. Second thing: aiming. The fact that a game designed with a pad in mind requires precise aiming and does not have any aim assist system is just one big mistake. I play on the console, but the gamepad will never replace the precision of a mouse. And the game requires aiming precision on the level of using the mouse. Summary: Almost every fight is frustrating and significantly lowers the overall gameplay experience.

The controller (and its buttons specifically) were designed as L1/R1 to be used by the pointing fingers and L2/R2 for the middle finger (just as the fingers order on hands): but Sony wants players to struggle with playing the game contrary to what is natural: in real life nobody fires a weapon with the middle finger. It’s not only annoying: when the in game on screen instruction buttons are opposite to the one changed by button alignments thus become very confusing too.

I always find climbing something to know where I am a chore in a game. The radio towers in this game are okay, but still this game design component was never something I could be a fan of.

Hunting is about the same as the old game, just a few more tricks.

After playing for a few hours, I requested a refund as it felt like the iterative steps this took towards improving the gameplay from the last game still left me feeling like the experience was a chore and was not worth my time. Also Aloy is not a character I felt was relatable or that I could feel personally invested in, which is why I give this a 7 overall. Good graphics and environments is not enough, gameplay must be the standing legs to make a game good, and this was just okay.

The game did not excite me as the first game did. The story is not as interesting as in Zero Dawn. The gameplay lacks a few new additions, while any of the climbing is just torture. Also I often did not know where I needed to go next. There are some bugs still months after release, for instance the sound kept just bugging out during fights, which kills the atmosphere when you fight in silence.

Forbidden West is basically a great game for every new generation of gamer out there that value game based on its graphics or visual. It's completely gorgeous and stunning. My complain with Zero Dawn is how bland the look of the world and Forbidden West improve on that with creating more vibrant and colorful world.

But, that's it. I don't think they create an impactful improvement in other department. Combat is still the same with more variety as well as the skill tree but it's not something new. They just change the design but the feel is completely the same like Zero Dawn which to me Zero Dawn is pretty good.

Story still the same or even worst in my opinion as things get more complicated or complex which resulting with a lot of dialogue from every characters in the world. I can for sure say that Forbidden West is the most chatty game within my game library. I can't stand how chatty every characters, including Aloy in the game as I keep skipping it after I met Erend.

Performance not that great with some pop in object as well as characters (which is new to me). Some characters texturing also seems buggy or not yet load when I speak to them so they look so soft at the beginning like a baby.

Quit the game and I choose to spend my 1 month PS Plus Extra on Yakuza 6 and FF7 Remake instead of Horizon FW because I feel all they do only focusing and promoting the graphics of the game. If this is the future of Sony, gaming will be boring in the future.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gorgeous graphics and fun gameplay. Love the setting but some open world aspects feel derivative - (horizon’s version of Gwent minigame and the hang glider). I enjoy a great story, unfortunately I found myself skipping cutscenes and mashing buttons through dialogue exchanges. The xp system feels kind of generous - like machine kills provide too much xp so I found myself flying through the levels to the point where the main questline seemed too easy- maybe this is my fault and there was a game setting I could have adjusted though.

The quests are good- I especially enjoyed the relic ruin puzzles even though they were often straightforward. There was one thing about the quests I could not wrap my head around though- the Rebel camps and outpost. I really couldn’t bring myself to complete more than one or two because I had no idea why I was killing all these innocent seeming people. Did I miss something from my cutscene skipping? The game encourages the player to invade these small establishments but it just seems like the “rebels” were these groups of survivors minding their own business and protecting themselves and their homes. Aloy is also portrayed as somewhat caring and empathetic so it seemed out of character. She is also the champion or saviour of the world from the original game, so to kick in the front door at these camps made of sticks and tents felt hilariously evil. The player is also equipped with like 19 different bows, bombs and gattling guns and you’re encouraged to creatively mow down these men and women wearing feathers like you’re arnold killing cops at the police station in the terminator. It felt good killing the machines but I’m just not sure what the motives were for killing probably hundreds of people throughout the game for seemingly no reason. This is really the only reason I wrote this review. Was it just me?

Как мне не хватало этого в финале Last of Us 2!

Horizon Zero Dawn was a very solid new beginning for a new series in my opinion and I was very excited for a possible sequel. The sequel, however, is slightly more complicated.
First of all, the story is really... disappointing; the writing is inconsistent, the plot lacks development, the antagonistic group barely appears in the game and their motivations make no sense at all. It does

First of all, the story is really... disappointing; the writing is inconsistent, the plot lacks development, the antagonistic group barely appears in the game and their motivations make no sense at all. It does expand on the lore of the first game at least, but it relies on the first game's story way too much without going further, and even the last mission is very underwhelming.
Same goes for the characters; they're already quite disappointing in the first game, and they didn't get better in this game. The villains are comically evil, the supporting cast isn't engaging at all and even Aloy is uninteresting because all her development happened in the first game.
The gameplay, however, is really... good; it's similar to Zero Dawn's gameplay, but it has many QoL improvements and some cool new ideas, and more content than the first game overall.
Unfortunately though, some mechanics and minor details feel clunky, and the puzzles are pretty boring.
Last but not least, the visuals are some of the best I've seen in an Open World game, despite the surprising amount of pop-ins.

    Pros:
    + Fascinating lore
    + Great gameplay
    + QoL improvements
    + Nice amount of content
    + Breathtaking graphics

    Cons:
    - Very weak narrative
    - Slow pacing
    - Uninteresting characters
    - Awkward mechanics and tedious puzzles
    - Technical and visual issues

    Narrative: 3/10
    Gameplay: 8/10
    Content: 7/10
    Characters: 4/10
    Music: ?/10
    Graphics/Audio: 10/10

    Final Rating: 6/10
    - Decent -
In the end, Horizon Forbidden West feels unnecessary; it's more of a very slow build-up for a new story instead of the middle act of a trilogy, and its world lacks the mystery of the first game.
With that being said, however, it's still a decent experience overall, but not nearly as good as I hoped it would be.

    Do I recommend it?:
If you're a fan of the first game... yes, it's more of the same but bigger, although I wouldn't say it's better; I vastly prefer the first game personally.

Love the game, but it needed an update to make gameplay more pleasant, it is a full game without the update and playable offline but is quite buggy without it, nothing game breaking, I’m mostly offline by choice, I rarely use the internet, I always test games offline before updating them online to see how they play, anyone that has bad or no internet, this game is playable without anLove the game, but it needed an update to make gameplay more pleasant, it is a full game without the update and playable offline but is quite buggy without it, nothing game breaking, I’m mostly offline by choice, I rarely use the internet, I always test games offline before updating them online to see how they play, anyone that has bad or no internet, this game is playable without an update but with texture bugs if you don’t mind that kind of thing, I would stick with zero dawn complete edition if I had no internet, at least it’s already updated with game add ons like the frozen wilds. There’s nothing wrong with learning from your competitors, but what’s the point of copying stuff that’s mocked even by Ubisoft fans? Hopefully, next time Guerrilla will focus more on Horizon’s own strengths: unique world and mechosaurs that are so fun to take apart. [Issue#259, p.72]

If you liked Zero Dawn, you will probably enjoy Forbidden West, even though the sequel lost that pioneering spirit and Aloy stopped developing as a character.

Horizon Forbidden West embraces everything about its predecessor and makes strides in producing an even more compelling world to explore, with intense combat and story moments, and shiny new robo-dinosaurs to punch in the face. I cannot wait to see where Aloy and her companions’ story goes next.
