If you have never played Heavy Rain and are looking at getting it, I would highly recommend it in everyway and I will tell you why. Heavy Rains story is so immersive and intriguing in the fact that your constantly wondering what your next choice will do to the story and the overall outcome at the end of the game, this game at some points will make you stop and think what the hell am I about to do, what do I decide to do, when this game first released on PS3 it was reported to have around like 10 different possible endings, how true that is I have no idea but I personally played through the game around 4 times and got a different outcome each time. the thing I loved most about this game is the use of the motion sensitive controller and the thing that is so nice is that you use it a lot but its not to the point that its overuse which is really nice. summary Heavy Rain is like playing the Zodiac killers version of SAW and is very much a psychological thriller in every sense of the way and makes you consider each choice wondering what the effect will be. I will give this game a 8/10 the only reason that it isn't more is the fact that this is a money grab more by Sony than anything else and that is disappointing but that will not change.

I recently bought the remastered collection and I decided to play Beyond: Two Souls first which in retrospect wasn't the best idea as it really highlighted the flaws in Heavy Rain.

I enjoyed the story for the most part and it's what kept me interested until the end, but it wasn't perfect as there were many plot holes due to the removal of all supernatural elements mere months before release, this was done to make the game more realistic but it also made the story confusing as those supernatural elements explained parts of the story that weren't explained otherwise. You can find videos on YouTube detailing everything that was removed.

Where Heavy Rain falls hardest is the gameplay, the controls are clunky and unresponsive, especially when motion commands are used. The frame rate isn't stable and the pre-recorded videos are some of the worst I've seen, they playback very choppy and low quality, far worse than on the PS3 version. The game itself is inferior technically in every way to Beyond: Two Souls which isn't surprising as Heavy Rain came out first, but what is surprising is the quality of the remaster is also worse which shouldn't be the case. They even excluded the Taxidermist DLC which is a damn shame as it was a very good chapter of the game on PS3.

Another huge problem is the voice acting, it's really bad in almost all cases, most of the characters felt lifeless and unbelievable and it really hurt the story as I didn't feel connected to the main characters. The developers also used a bizarre “Microsoft Sam” robotic filter whenever anyone was thinking to themselves which was just awful. I actually think this was my biggest issue and disappointment with the game as Two Souls had incredible voice work, with A list stars like Willem Dafoe and Ellen Page putting in wonderful performances.

Overall I'm glad I bought the collection as I never experienced them on PS3, but most of my enjoyment came from Beyond: Two Souls and Heavy Rain just felt like a rough draft in comparison.

On the other hand the gameplay on its own is not spectacular. The controls are kind of clunky and unintuitive and it’s no real complexity in what you as a player are doing. It’s mostly controlling your character and deciding what they should do. But there is really no need for more in this case.

This game had me invested in the story and the character throughout the whole game and I truly enjoyed the experience. Though the game was rather short. And the replayability of the game is not really there. So the overall entertainment value of the game is affected due to this.

I played Heavy Rain a month after I had played Until Dawn and I was a little bit disappointed. First of all the controls are clumsy but the worst past is that the game crashed multiple times. I can understand technical issues in an open world game but when Sony is producing the game and you have to reboot console many times to play it something is not right.

I actually bought and sold Heavy Rain on after its initial release on PS3. My first impressions of the game were that it looked stunning (at its time of PS3 release - probably unchallenged for how polished it looked) and I did love the story, but the mechanics and game style I felt hugely let it down, making an unplayable and far too challenging game that didnt really have a place in my collection.
Since the PS4s release, I've got onboard with heavily narrative driven games, with FireWatch itself being one of the most memorable and enjoyable narratives I've enjoyed this year. I decided to give Heavy Rain another shot, maybe just to see if I can make it without all the characters dying...

    It turns out I can!

For gamers contemplating buying Heavy Rain for the first time, I'd recommend it when on PSN discount etc. The graphics have been polished a little more for PS4, but the game itself hasnt changed (this maybe a flaw to some). The initial 30 minutes won't blow you away until the events tug the narrative to the game-title and suddenly the lore is a lot darker and deeper when you pick back up. Each character is somewhat a cliché in part, but always believable. This is one of the great strengths of Heavy Rain. The other greatest strength is the impact decision making makes on the outcomes of the game. Losing a main character can be frustrating (and when I say lose, I mean they are permanently dead!) but this adds to the panic you'll be under whilst he/she is struggling to keep alive.

Heavy Rain almost created a genre on its own. It was a new bar set for gamer's and its uncompromising difficulty makes it re-playable as unless you are playing with YouTube videos guiding you through, people will die, and you will want to reload or replay through to see how to avoid that happening!

The biggest flaw that still exists on either platform is the responsiveness to the controls. I often felt myself getting flustered and outright angry when the simple command to turn a door handle didn't respond. The red-boxes telling me I've not managed to open a drawer and having to recommit. At time it felt like the game was trying to troll my time and was purposefully doing so on some of the most pointless tasks in the game. This frustration is hard to measure. You quickly learn their system, what is expected on what quicktime event, you maybe reloading and playing a scene out for the 2nd or 3rd time, and STILL the red box flicks up to say "you didnt turn the door handle properly". i appreciate this was put in to make the game more immersive, and when it works, it does work well, but often I just felt the controls were lacking.

Heavy Rain was a landmark of a game, one I felt I'd revisit and I'm glad I did. The story is exceptional, the experience overall was rewarding and the darkest of scenes are my sort of darkness!

    Not for everyone, 7/10

Heavy rain is a great narration based game. It comes from the same studio as Detroit Become Human which aces narration driven gaming. There are lots of good things about Heavy rain and a couple of things that aren't great.

The pros include the amazing music that is very soothing to listen to. Great narration based story that unfolds slowly, character emotions that are portrayed well.

Unfortunately, Heavy rain leaves a couple of questions unanswered like how the narrator became so poor after being shown as coming from an affluent family initially, the plot holes that the other comments would have already covered also aren't explained.

Overall, Despite it's flaws, Heavy Rain is a great game with flaws and bad controls. Definitely not a 10/10 but deserves a good rating for a great take on narration based gaming and the music.

Good history, awesome graphics, could be one of the best games ever, but it have the worst controls ever. It is really annoying, they are pretty bad for a game like this.

When motion commands are used seems like you are flipping a coin, you do whatever the game wants, but sometimes the game says that you didn't, it is totally unresponsive.

The Taxidermist DLC was excluded from the game.

The element of mystery is through the roof, and it's this that will keep players coming back for more! Nothing short of amazing! This is how you do a story-based game! Not that Beyond Two Souls garbage.

Heavy Rain does come with it's flaws however. First off, the game is loaded with Quick Time Events, a mechanic that is frowned upon in a "true" video game today. QTEs are infamous for being the easy way out., when they can't be bothered to make actual gameplay. So instead, they make a scene where you just press a button to win. Heavy Rain takes this one step further however by utilizing the motion controls, which are frustrating as hell! Half the time, it doesn't work, I spent 5 whole minutes on one QTE alone just trying to turn my controller sideways. There's also a few flaws in some of it's story direction in terms of the decisions you make.

Despite these issues; the average player will still have a blast with this game. Go ahead and purchase it, this will be money well spent.

Heavy Rain is a story-driven adventure game with great atmosphere and passion. Some people have labeled it as an interactive movie, but it's really an adventure game at its heart.

The game's story involves 4 playable, unrelated characters whose storylines gradually interweave and affect each other. The overall story arc is about finding a missing boy (the son of one of the protagonists) who has been kidnapped by an "Origami killer" (a maniac who leaves Origamis at his crime scenes) in a rain-soaked city. There are also some other mini-stories for each character with their own appeal.

This is a game where choices have lasting effects, or may cause a character to die. You can even have all of the protagonists get killed, leading to a game over state. You can replay the game from the beginning and make different choices to see what different outcomes they yield.

The graphics do an amazing job to service the game's atmosphere and ambition, and on PS4 they have been enhanced compared to the PS3 version. All characters have been mo-capped and look great, even though their voce acting isn't perfect. The music is OK.

The game's big problem though is the awful gamepad controls. I don't mean laggy or imprecise controls. It's a weird system where you have to push the R2 trigger to move forward in the direction you are currently facing, instead of just using the analogue stick in a straight-forward manner (it reminds me of the tank controls in some old games such as Resident Evil and Grim Fandango). There are some QTEs, but also an abundance of button prompts where you have to push various buttons in the sequence they are shown while simultaneously keeping the previous buttons still pressed down in order to go forward or else you have to repeat it from the beginning. It's crazy stupid.

Unfortunately there is no PS Move motion controller support on the PS4 version as far as I know. Motion controls made the game a far better experience on PS3 than playing with the gamepad.

Heavy Rain is a great game on its own, an adventure game and something different from the Call of Duties and the GTAs of this world. Play the game and you 'll enjoy the powerful story.

The PS4 version does not have remastered in the title but it is just that, with visuals that have been spruced up as well as performance and lighting. The story is as engaging as always and the gameplay will be familiar to anybody who plays Telltales games or even Dontnod's more recent Life is Strange series. You will affect how the story progresses through your dialogue choices and how you interact (or not) with the things in your environment. You play as 4 different characters throughout the story each with their own agendas and demons to bare. Scott Shelby is the standout character for me personally as he is more likable and easier to root for as the scrappy overweight PI.

On the negative side, on the rare occasion that a pre-rendered cutscene is used the encoding is akin to early DVD quality with visible Macroblocking, also they do suffer a little screen tear but nothing enough to ruin the experience.

Aside from that rare occurrence the whole experience is highly recommended for fans who want to relive it again or for those who never got to play it the first time (I envy you that).

Now go forth and press X to "Jason!"

I originally bounced off of this game pretty hard. The movement controls are terrible (they don't get better) and the story starts off real slow. I don't want to play with kids in real life, much less be forced to in order to move the story along in a game. But it does have some neat twists and turns throughout the story and I'm glad I went back to finish it.

But it does have some neat twists and turns throughout the story and I'm glad I went back to finish it.

I have played many games like this (Beyond: Two Souls, Detroit, Telltale Games) so it isn't a problem in every game done in this style. But this experience was purposefully tedious at times. You could be running for your life or fighting a murderer and then ten minutes later you're puttering around an apartment making scrambled eggs. I get why they did it that way, but it feels really artsy and brings the pacing to a grinding halt.

The characters also didn't really stand out to me. For starters, each one had that creepy "LA Noir" style face animation that was popular at the time. And even worse-all of them were British voice actors doing bad American accents! If you have a mostly English cast with beautiful English accents, just set the game in England for Pete's sake! The game would have been so much better without every character pronouncing "Origami" like "Miami". Every single vowel out of Norman's mouth sounded uncomfortable and made me cringe.

All those problems aside, once I got to the Trials the game really does get interesting. I went from wanting to shorten the game by eliminating characters to trying my darndest to get the best ending possible and catch the killer.

Overall a pretty worthwhile experience if you can look past a few faults.

I think part of the reason I kept with it is because of how strange it is. There's a sort of misunderstanding of America - on a far more subtle level than a game like Deadly Premonition, but it's there. There's a moment very early in the game where Detective Shelby passes a tight-lipped guy 5 bucks for information. Maybe he just really likes happy meals.

There's also a dream sequence that bugged the crap out of me. I won't go into spoilery details, but I will say that the dream is never elaborated on and ultimately feels like a fetishistic fantasy more than anything else. If you're into that, all the more to you, I guess.

The controls are wonky. I honestly wouldn't have minded if the game were simply a movie with QT button commands throughout, but there are so many segments where you have to walk by holding R2 and change direction with the R-stick. Not sure why this was the case, but I sure spun around a lot. I eventually got used to it, but I still didn't care for it.

The story, at its base, is good. The meat on the bones is a little crazy and often stupid, but there are some delightfully gut-wrenching bits too. It's a bit of a slog getting to the parts where things pick up, but all-in-all it was a middle-of-the-road meh leaning towards OK.

While certain things involving the game's age and playability are taken into account here, a lot of this rating is based largely around the port itself.*
"Heavy Rain" was a game that I felt I was in the minority with when I gave the original PlayStation 3 game a 10 out of 10. Yes, I acknowledge that there were some plot-holes here, but I still found the story and characters captivating enough that I could forgive those, especially because those holes actually opened up for discussions and questions long after I completed the game. It was a game that kept me coming back for several playthroughs, and it hooked me like few others have. While I wasn't initially planning on getting the PlayStation 4 port of it, it was part of the Digital Deluxe Edition of "Detroit: Become Human" (which, yes, I will play and review as soon as possible), which was only $10 more than the standard edition, so I got to replay "Heavy Rain," and I was impressed that it held up so well.
"Heavy Rain" remains a game that is very enjoyable, and even if a lot of the game is scripted cinematics and quick-time events, it still remains very exciting and tensing. Once again, even though the story has some holes, the characters and the writing are still captivating and rich (even if some of the performances are kind of cheesy by today's standards), and I feel like there's a certain novelty to the game now. Given that it was released in early 2010, right when the new wave of story-driven, "realistically-designed" games were starting to pop off, it's cool to see one of the games that helped start it off (obviously, before the days of "The Walking Dead"). And for the most part, the visuals still remain quite strong today, as the 1080p facelift brings out the overall beauty of the game.
It's easy for me to forgive the occasionally off-putting model or very minor frame-dipping in this one because they don't really impact the enjoyment of the game, but there's one thing I can't really forgive: even though "Beyond: Two Souls" (Quantic Dream's next game) received a PlayStation 4 port with plenty of new stuff (like the ability to play the game in chronological order), I was disappointed that "Heavy Rain" on PlayStation 4 offers nothing new other than the satisfaction of getting to re-experience the game. I would've liked to see this version of the game come with some playable versions of some of the things that were left on the cutting room floor (such as Ethan's blackouts) in something of a "Director's Cut" version, or it could've featured some of the cut DLC episodes that were supposed to release after "The Taxidermist." Speaking of that DLC, I also would've liked it if the game actually came with "The Taxidermist" DLC, much like how "Beyond: Two Souls" came with the "Enhanced Experiments" DLC. The lack of new features, or even added DLC, makes it seem like there was more care put into RELEASING the port, and not ENHANCING the port outside of the 1080p visuals.
Still, while the lack of new features is disappointing, "Heavy Rain" remains what I like to call a "flawed masterpiece," and it's a game that I highly suggest playing. Obviously, if you own it on PS3 already, there's not much of a point in getting this version, but if you haven't gotten to experience "Heavy Rain" yet, give it a shot now that it's on the PlayStation 4!
Final rating: 9 out of 10 "Awesome"

What’s the point of smashing buttons or trying to hold up to 8 (!) at the same time? This absolutely doesn’t help to build suspense, doesn’t make some sort of challenge – it’s a story driven game, not a platformer or shooter! There was simple solution to not spoiling the gameplay – just get rid of all QTE (ok, at least 90% of them) and leave the “choose-your-option” approach. Minus stupid button smashing, plus thinking about given options (and their consequences).
About the story. It’s main twist is totally stupid and made only to please devs ego (“bet you couldn’t see it coming!!”). The hero’s character shown trough the game is thrown to the trash. It’s like you’ve almost reached the highest top of the mountain and when only a few inches are left you say “ah, screw it, I’m going down, I’ve never really wanted it anyway”. The rest of the story contains some minor plot holes as well, but the main problem is the twist.
To conclude. Pros: interesting story (until it comes to the killer’s reveal), well written characters (again – until the killer is revealed), few different endings (some good, some bad, but none of them is satisfying dew to the twist). Cons: amount of QTEs is beyond any reasons, plot twist is a total disgrace, below the average voice acting.
It could have been a very interesting interactive thriller, but its cons drag it down. It’s still worth playing just don’t expect it to be “best game ever”.

Heavily overrated game. After playing Detroit, my expectations were for a good narrative game. The story is painfully slow with too many fillers. Completely wasted my time, I stopped after 9 hours. It didn't matter what the payoff was going to be at the ending, I had enough! Nothing can make up for the boring story.

The choices system is different from other games, it poses drastic moral reactions and consequences which could actually end up in a character dying outright. They don't get revived either which causes your ending to change subsequently. The script is well done and as the story gets darker and darker you wonder if you're ever going to see the ending, or one of the 24 possible ones! This proves plenty of room for replay value which is unusual for narrative games. My only critiscism of a game like this is that the use of the motion sensor of the pad is sometimes utterly tedious, like changing a baby's nappy, or cleaning your characters teeth, or pushing a kid on a swing. It's showing off the possibilities but becomes boring and pointless to the story. Aside from this, this game is something of a masterpiece which shouldn't ever be drowned out by sequels. Expand

Sometimes to much pointless everyday hum drum padding filler slows the pacing all down. I do has some gripes with the Ethan and Madison story line options. No spoilers one point fell rushed beyond belief and the other was a illogical inconsistency. Where outcome should of created the opposite of my first run happy ending. The other characters story lines were fine and I didn't pick up on anything that created a illogical inconsistency. I do believe this game has multiple branching endings.

Even though the subject material was so far from my taste I was invested in all the characters outcomes. However as a game it kind of sucks to play. The QTE in this game are more annoying than most games of this type and oh boy that motion control is really finicky at times.

Heavy Rain, a game purged with narrative to give you a gripping story and relatable characters. Though this game offers good storytelling it does approach some simplistic functionality in game play which for me feels bare and minimal considering what we have had in the past decade with games and storytelling.

On a positive start this game is rather good with telling you a story, the many options for dialogue and progressive behaviors of the characters to one another allows for full immersive reality. Aspects like do you kill this guy or intervene with this gives players not only choice but the idea that there is more to the actions than here and now.

Characters in this game are not made to be unrealistic either and make you feel sympathy and honest hurt when something gripping happens. Each of the 4 main protagonists having different backgrounds allows for different takes on the game play depending on what the player feels is best or what they just happen to feel towards a specific character.

Now I've given it some positive points for it to gloat about but with all good things there is that outlying bad point or in this case points. The first is the quick time events, I get it that this game is solely narrative based and game play is more an after thought, but having players mash a few buttons, twiddle the analog stick a few times and then shout at the TV for a bit because you've done the same part 5 times is not exactly gonna shout hey come play our game with button mashing controls and free rage.

That also brings me to the second point, bad controls. During some quick time events you have to shake the controller up or down or left to right, seems fine right, the problem is half the time it doesn't work. For example, oh no you gonna crash the car move the controller to the right, you move controller to the right, are you doing it asks the theoretical game voice, Yes you shout as you beak every ligament in your hand, and after all is said and done it still hasn't done it..

Sticking with controls, by god what is with the walking controls, hold this button move this stick, and the animation for it is not exactly smooth either, often having you walk around the wrong way and then go oh you want to go this way and walk back again.

The final point is the graphics, I get that it's a port from PS3 and I get that back then they were standard, but you could have altered a few textures and upgraded the graphics a little to fit with the common expectations, but to me that wasn't too major.

All in all this game is great, yes it has a bit of a loose control scheme and yes the graphics are dated, but the game is and always will be brilliant at not only telling a story but telling one where your actions have consequences

Although there are a few moments where you don't really know why you're interacting with the game, for the most part, this story-driven adventure is thrilling, with plenty of suspense and action. Although it offers many possible endings, once you figure out the main plot devise (who did it), there aren't that many attractions for replayability.

I'm glad I went back and gave this a try after getting it for Free on PS+. The story and characters were engaging and kept me wanting to come back despite the horrible controls. Thankfully - Heavy Rain doesnt rely on controls too much outside of QTEs or it would have been a deal breaker. Enjoyable from start to finish - great twist ending. Would recommend to anyone for a change of pace.

Heavy Rain is a simulation of one of the most difficult jobs there is: being a single father... whose son won't do his homework.

(There's also something about a serial killer but that seems like a secondary plot somewhat clumsily tacked on to the main game.)

I was looking for a game that would provide me the experience of a movie, but, through the interactivity of game mechanics, provide immersion that no movie could ever provide.

What I got was so much more - I did not just experience the movie, I lived the movie.
Apart from fulfilling the typical requirements for such a feat (good acting, atmosphere, effects, graphics, etc), the powerful sense of consequences to each and every action I performed was like nothing I had ever experienced before. I think that being forearmed with the knowledge that four characters are playable, but can die at any moment as a direct result of my actions was key.
You see, I read the various items of information provided by the game before playing.

I am blown away at how this game manages to achieve such an experience without VR, but through very clever use of the controller.
The reactive threshold, whereby certain buttons must be pressed within a certain time limit, felt just right, and I liked how failing did not necessarily result in immediate death, but would draw out a different cut scene and give me a stronger sense of deaths imminence if I continued to mess up.

I am a very experienced gamer (35 years old now), having played games from way back like Space Invaders on the Amstrad through to games on consoles like Sonic on the Sega Master System, through to games like Affected on the Oculus Rift.
Never before have I fought enemies like my very life was on the line.
Never before have I felt such a sense of relief when finally overpowering an enemy.
Never before have I uttered audible sounds/expletives, even though no-one else is with me.
Never before have I experienced a character death and accepted it as part of the story line without reloading.
Never before have I looked at the concept art after completing the game (unlocked during playing) and felt like it was stimulating memories of experiences in my own life.

You have to play this game with the right expectations - it is not a gun-toting, car drifting, all action genre, yet the emotions it invokes far surpasses those invoked from such genres.
Quite frankly, this game is a work of art and the people involved in making it should be very proud of its accomplishment.

This game was aiming to realism in a very particular way. The characters are normal people, so to speak.
The protagonist, the antagonist, everything about this game felt real, even with the bugs.
The game was trying to be a movie with actors.
I'm not going to criticize this genre of games, because even though I very much prefer games with a good gameplay and more immersion, I still enjoyed the **** out of the story of Heavy Rain.
If you love mysteries, just give David Cage a damn chance; this game will not leave you disappointed if you love movies and videogames, especially so if you're looking for a serious, dramatic, and emotional story.
