I recently bought the remastered collection and I decided to play Beyond: Two Souls first which in retrospect wasn't the best idea as it really highlighted the flaws in Heavy Rain.

I enjoyed the story for the most part and it's what kept me interested until the end, but it wasn't perfect as there were many plot holes due to the removal of all supernatural elements mere months before release, this was done to make the game more realistic but it also made the story confusing as those supernatural elements explained parts of the story that weren't explained otherwise. You can find videos on YouTube detailing everything that was removed.

Where Heavy Rain falls hardest is the gameplay, the controls are clunky and unresponsive, especially when motion commands are used. The frame rate isn't stable and the pre-recorded videos are some of the worst I've seen, they playback very choppy and low quality, far worse than on the PS3 version. The game itself is inferior technically in every way to Beyond: Two Souls which isn't surprising as Heavy Rain came out first, but what is surprising is the quality of the remaster is also worse which shouldn't be the case. They even excluded the Taxidermist DLC which is a damn shame as it was a very good chapter of the game on PS3.

Another huge problem is the voice acting, it's really bad in almost all cases, most of the characters felt lifeless and unbelievable and it really hurt the story as I didn't feel connected to the main characters. The developers also used a bizarre “Microsoft Sam” robotic filter whenever anyone was thinking to themselves which was just awful. I actually think this was my biggest issue and disappointment with the game as Two Souls had incredible voice work, with A list stars like Willem Dafoe and Ellen Page putting in wonderful performances.

Overall I'm glad I bought the collection as I never experienced them on PS3, but most of my enjoyment came from Beyond: Two Souls and Heavy Rain just felt like a rough draft in comparison.

I played Heavy Rain a month after I had played Until Dawn and I was a little bit disappointed. First of all the controls are clumsy but the worst past is that the game crashed multiple times. I can understand technical issues in an open world game but when Sony is producing the game and you have to reboot console many times to play it something is not right.

Heavy Rain is a mixed bag

It's certainly not a game for everyone in its actual gameplay, and fans of FireWatch and walking sims who are new to Quantic Dream (the studio behind it) may find its quick-time elements are more hands on than those in similar games. I actually bought and sold Heavy Rain on after its initial release on PS3. My first impressions of the game were that it looked stunning (at its time of PS3 release - probably unchallenged for how polished it looked) and I did love the story, but the mechanics and game style I felt hugely let it down, making an unplayable and far too challenging game that didnt really have a place in my collection.
Since the PS4s release, I've got onboard with heavily narrative driven games, with FireWatch itself being one of the most memorable and enjoyable narratives I've enjoyed this year. I decided to give Heavy Rain another shot, maybe just to see if I can make it without all the characters dying...

    It turns out I can!

For gamers contemplating buying Heavy Rain for the first time, I'd recommend it when on PSN discount etc. The graphics have been polished a little more for PS4, but the game itself hasnt changed (this maybe a flaw to some). The initial 30 minutes won't blow you away until the events tug the narrative to the game-title and suddenly the lore is a lot darker and deeper when you pick back up. Each character is somewhat a cliché in part, but always believable. This is one of the great strengths of Heavy Rain. The other greatest strength is the impact decision making makes on the outcomes of the game. Losing a main character can be frustrating (and when I say lose, I mean they are permanently dead!) but this adds to the panic you'll be under whilst he/she is struggling to keep alive.

Heavy Rain almost created a genre on its own. It was a new bar set for gamer's and its uncompromising difficulty makes it re-playable as unless you are playing with YouTube videos guiding you through, people will die, and you will want to reload or replay through to see how to avoid that happening!

The biggest flaw that still exists on either platform is the responsiveness to the controls. I often felt myself getting flustered and outright angry when the simple command to turn a door handle didn't respond. The red-boxes telling me I've not managed to open a drawer and having to recommit. At time it felt like the game was trying to troll my time and was purposefully doing so on some of the most pointless tasks in the game. This frustration is hard to measure. You quickly learn their system, what is expected on what quicktime event, you maybe reloading and playing a scene out for the 2nd or 3rd time, and STILL the red box flicks up to say "you didnt turn the door handle properly". i appreciate this was put in to make the game more immersive, and when it works, it does work well, but often I just felt the controls were lacking.

Heavy Rain was a landmark of a game, one I felt I'd revisit and I'm glad I did. The story is exceptional, the experience overall was rewarding and the darkest of scenes are my sort of darkness!

    Not for everyone, 7/10

I took around 7 or 8 hours to beat the game and got a positive ending (not the best one though). Maybe, in a few months, I will try to get alternate endings but for now, I was satisfied overall with Heavy Rain which I got for free with PS plus. The element of mystery is through the roof, and it's this that will keep players coming back for more! Nothing short of amazing! This is how you do a story-based game! Not that Beyond Two Souls garbage.

Heavy Rain does come with it's flaws however. First off, the game is loaded with Quick Time Events, a mechanic that is frowned upon in a "true" video game today. QTEs are infamous for being the easy way out., when they can't be bothered to make actual gameplay. So instead, they make a scene where you just press a button to win. Heavy Rain takes this one step further however by utilizing the motion controls, which are frustrating as hell! Half the time, it doesn't work, I spent 5 whole minutes on one QTE alone just trying to turn my controller sideways. There's also a few flaws in some of it's story direction in terms of the decisions you make.

Despite these issues; the average player will still have a blast with this game. Go ahead and purchase it, this will be money well spent.

I have to admit that, i felt like i'm watching a really good movie. But that was the problem , i wasn't ruling the game , i was just watching it and pushing the buttons which game tells me.

I didn't get any enjoyment by playing it, but story is good though , good enough to compete a good movie

Decent story that lose the magic once you know the secret. This got pretty bad looking even on the remaster but you can't expect good gameplay and graphics on a game that it's focused on story. Decent and probably the only game of the creators worth playing.

I originally bounced off of this game pretty hard. The movement controls are terrible (they don't get better) and the story starts off real slow. I don't want to play with kids in real life, much less be forced to in order to move the story along in a game. But it does have some neat twists and turns throughout the story and I'm glad I went back to finish it.

I have played many games like this (Beyond: Two Souls, Detroit, Telltale Games) so it isn't a problem in every game done in this style. But this experience was purposefully tedious at times. You could be running for your life or fighting a murderer and then ten minutes later you're puttering around an apartment making scrambled eggs. I get why they did it that way, but it feels really artsy and brings the pacing to a grinding halt.

The characters also didn't really stand out to me. For starters, each one had that creepy "LA Noir" style face animation that was popular at the time. And even worse-all of them were British voice actors doing bad American accents! If you have a mostly English cast with beautiful English accents, just set the game in England for Pete's sake! The game would have been so much better without every character pronouncing "Origami" like "Miami". Every single vowel out of Norman's mouth sounded uncomfortable and made me cringe.

All those problems aside, once I got to the Trials the game really does get interesting. I went from wanting to shorten the game by eliminating characters to trying my darndest to get the best ending possible and catch the killer.

Overall a pretty worthwhile experience if you can look past a few faults.

There's a sort of misunderstanding of America - on a far more subtle level than a game like Deadly Premonition, but it's there. There's a moment very early in the game where Detective Shelby passes a tight-lipped guy 5 bucks for information. Maybe he just really likes happy meals.

There's also a dream sequence that bugged the crap out of me. I won't go into spoilery details, but I will say that the dream is never elaborated on and ultimately feels like a fetishistic fantasy more than anything else. If you're into that, all the more to you, I guess.

The controls are wonky. I honestly wouldn't have minded if the game were simply a movie with QT button commands throughout, but there are so many segments where you have to walk by holding R2 and change direction with the R-stick. Not sure why this was the case, but I sure spun around a lot. I eventually got used to it, but I still didn't care for it.

The story, at its base, is good. The meat on the bones is a little crazy and often stupid, but there are some delightfully gut-wrenching bits too. It's a bit of a slog getting to the parts where things pick up, but all-in-all it was a middle-of-the-road meh leaning towards OK.

What’s the point of smashing buttons or trying to hold up to 8 (!) at the same time? This absolutely doesn’t help to build suspense, doesn’t make some sort of challenge – it’s a story driven game, not a platformer or shooter! There was simple solution to not spoiling the gameplay – just get rid of all QTE (ok, at least 90% of them) and leave the “choose-your-option” approach. Minus stupid button smashing, plus thinking about given options (and their consequences).
About the story. It’s main twist is totally stupid and made only to please devs ego (“bet you couldn’t see it coming!!”). The hero’s character shown trough the game is thrown to the trash. It’s like you’ve almost reached the highest top of the mountain and when only a few inches are left you say “ah, screw it, I’m going down, I’ve never really wanted it anyway”. The rest of the story contains some minor plot holes as well, but the main problem is the twist.
To conclude. Pros: interesting story (until it comes to the killer’s reveal), well written characters (again – until the killer is revealed), few different endings (some good, some bad, but none of them is satisfying dew to the twist). Cons: amount of QTEs is beyond any reasons, plot twist is a total disgrace, below the average voice acting.
It could have been a very interesting interactive thriller, but its cons drag it down. It’s still worth playing just don’t expect it to be “best game ever”.

Expand

Their voice acting isn't even good, it feels as though they got one of the production staff's children to do it rather than actual voice actors. This had a good budget so why cut corners like that?

The plot holes are so annoying. They expect you to just understand it and work it out yourself but some stuff just makes 0 sense. You would only know if you knew about the deleted scenes. So they just left stuff that was only significant with the deleted scenes and on its own it's just unclear. They should've really cleared those bits.

The controls are a bit funny and they're not as good as with Detroit. Then again, this did come out years before Detroit on the PS3 so I can let that slide.

Overall, the plot is okay. I enjoyed playing through it and this was quite fresh at the time it was released. Your inability to meet QTEs can actually result in the main characters dying so the stakes are high. But this is only during certain parts of the game, it's not like Until Dawn where there are several moments where characters can die. Of course, if you just don't do anything then it just looks very comedic and unrealistic as it can take a few failed QTEs until you finally die, but the idea of failing and consequently dying is still there regardless. So if you're in for a good crime thriller plot, I'd recommend this. After all, it's the plot you play for in these kind of games. But expect a lot of plot holes like characters suddenly knowing others despite never ever meeting them or knowing of their existence.

I feel like there are some plot holes and inconsistencies without spoiling, so I do have to dock points there.

This was a decent effort by the developers, however this has definitely not aged as well, especially compared to Detroit which is much better on all levels.

I've enjoyed quite a few of QD's games, and I know this was well received - so had high hopes. Um jogo lindo e histórico como esse merecia uma adaptação melhor para PS4, o jogo apresenta gráficos horríveis que não devem ser aceitos em atuais gerações de consoles.

The story is good, no doubt about It, however the movements controls are terrible. The rate could go up with an option to disable these controls.

Controls suck big time, but other than that an interesting story. Graphics are OK on the PS4. The voice acting is decent but cringe worthy in some segments.

Overall an enjoyable but painfull ride control-wise

This game has some cringy and funny moments which is not good considering this game is supposed to have a serious tone. But I did for the most part like this story. However remember this is not really a game more like a movie you make choices in.

The writing as a whole is really shockingly subpar. The fact David Cage is revered as some Interactive Drama genius is really odd, especially if you play this game and learn that people hold its writer/director in such high regard. Some of this stuff is Uwe Boll bad.

With that being said, by no means a bad game. Especially for its time. If you go in blind, it's an enjoyable playthrough.

-Strange choices made by characters, such as Madison having a love interest in Ethan despite him being a bit of a loser

It's a good game, but it has its issues which are accentuated by the fact that there is little 'gameplay' to distract.

Even though this is just re mastered Heavy Rain is a breath of fresh air into what games use to be story wise but also bringing a lot of new perspectives to it at the same time. If you have never played Heavy Rain and are looking at getting it, I would highly recommend it in

    Pros:
    - Excellent story, exactly what I was looking for
    - Ability to make your own choices, leading to different outcomes, and ultimately to different endings. There is no right or wrong; if you fail, the game just goes on Cons: - Mechanics/graphics - character movement reminds of something from early 00s. Visually, it's relatively poor, and the game is quite buggy. Controls are ridiculous

    pros
    1. The main characters for the most part are fairly likeable and decently presented.
    2. Very Good Music
    3. Story was intriguing and kept me going.

    cons
    1. Tons of plot conveniences
    2. Very poorly executed twist which ruined the Serial Killers whole story tbh
    3. The scenes with the ari thing were very annoying and tedious.
    4. The strip club scene is completely unnecessary and the female character (Madison) is needlessly sexualized with the camera constantly showing her behind all the time for no reason.

    conclusion
I did relatively enjoy my playthrough with Heavy Rain. But the issues prevent me from giving this a green rating. So 7/10. Certainly will never play this again. If i want to see the other endings ill just watch them on YouTube or replay the last few chapters. Same with a particular change in chapter. So the reply value isn't that strong in reality.

I played Heavy Rain for the first time in 2022 on PS5 and I have some mixed feelings. First of all the plot is decent but it has some holes in it. Main characters are good enough but I’ve seen better and I also had a „why are you doing this” feeling in few moments during the game. The game is non-linear and there are multiple endings possible, but the gameplay seemed very slow. I must sayI played Heavy Rain for the first time in 2022 on PS5 and I have some mixed feelings. What was really terrible were the controls and camera work. Controls were so unintuitive, imprecise and frustrating that some moments I felt like I moved 25 years back to early 3D games. Game also crashed few times during gameplay. All in all, the game wasn’t bad, I can say it is enjoyable, but it certainly shows its age. In 2010 I would probably rate it more, but nowadays it is 6/10 for me. Expand

It doesn’t offer anything new for anyone who already played the original. On the other hand, the graphics are significantly overhauled, making this remastered version a safe choice for anyone who didn’t had the chance to experience this excellent interactive drama.
