GRID

Grid is an entertaining and sensational racing game, which unfortunately also has a lack of finish and presentation. This is nothing more than "just nice racing". For a lot of gamers, that might be enough - although the franchise has already shown in the past that there is more to it.

The incredible visuals don’t (quite) make up for the unbalanced racing, and the kinetic feel, pit radio, career mode, and damage modelling are all inferior to the 2008 original. [Issue#169, p.86]

As with most reboots, there's a sense of compromise running throughout GRID. The fundamentals are there. Racing feels fantastic and action-packed with a great emphasis on presenting the races as genuine occasions. Unfortunately, you see where the icing has been spread thin. The career mode can feel repetitive and lacking in variety. As a racer, it's sound but it feels like an appetiser.

Grid is a great looking game and features some excellent driving and physics. It's let down by a questionable damage system and boring design. From the games dull menus to no-frills racing, there's just not enough here to separate it from the pack.

Limited number of cars, tracks not always inspired and non-existent management section prevent Codemasters' driving game from having a strong personality.

It may not feature all of the bells and whistles that we’ve grown accustomed to in 2019, but it’s certainly a solid foundation to rebuild a brand around.

With absolutely nothing new to bring to the table except the pointless 'Nemesis' feature, GRID treads water in spectacular fashion. It looks and sounds amazing, and plays like an arcade game which has aspirations to be a simulator, but with no realistic car damage to penalise reckless driving, it becomes a long drawn out affair.

If you shun DiRT Rally’s authenticity or F1 series’ almost tiresomely detailed race weekends and don’t mind the deficiency of online features, GRID is just about the best game you can get if you only fancy racing fast. It knows where it’s good at but at the same time, I still wish there was more character and challenge to it.

Some of the finest simulated driving you can find on PC and console, but with a single-player career mode that’s not as fully fleshed out as you’d expect for the money.

Grid is an enjoyable racing game that fails to do anything great. There’s a decent amount of content, but nothing to truly ride write home about. The career mode is relatively phoned in without any unique elements and can become a grind due to the game’s progression system. Returning fans will remember why they enjoyed the series, but they will also realize why it hasn’t been missed all that much in the past five years without an entry.

The Grid series offers a fun, gorgeous racing experience, and I can see value in bringing it back. But this incarnation of the game performs the bare minimum of the reboot mandate when it should be doing so much more. We race to be in first place, but unfortunately, Grid seems content to be in the middle of the pack.

GRID is a very solid racing game that harkens back to the 2008 original in some important ways. The action-packed racing itself is great and often unpredictable, and the handling strikes that balance between arcade and sim wonderfully. However, presentation isn't really up to scratch, and it leaves the game feeling a little cheap. We can't shake the feeling that the pursuit of that GRID personality has only led to a game that's, perhaps ironically, struggling for an identity. When all is said and done, though, there's still plenty to enjoy here, and it's certainly one of PS4's better casual racing games where it counts.

GRID is an enjoyable racing game for those who want to enjoy some close racing without worrying about camber angles. The market needs games like this to provide light and shade. I was hoping this new GRID would be a fresh start, but it's a last night's takeaway re-heated. I enjoy leftovers – cold pizza is one of life's great pleasures – but that doesn’t make the perfect racing game when the rest of the world has moved on.

Great visuals and a solid racing feel might not be enough to divert your attention from an already busy holiday line-up. There have been so many excellent racers in the past few years, that GRID just doesn’t do enough to justify its purchase price in my mind. It’s a fun game, sure, but I don’t think you’ll find it to be all that memorable in the long run.

Motorsport fans will have fun with this reboot, especially if they are looking to race some popular vehicles on well-known real-life circuits. However, the poor quality graphics, lack of local multiplayer, and limited appeal of the Nemesis system makes it harder to recommend.

Codemasters managed to create the perfect racing atmosphere, utilizing a top-notch driving model and excellent AI, but then they kind of forgot about everything else: the car pool is tiny, the Career Mode is non-existent, the team management is lacklustre.

GRID is a game that has excellent fundamentals, but does not go to the bottom of everything it could have proposed.

Grid is an easy-to-play racing game that entertains on the track but disappoints everywhere else. The career mode is hardly worth the name, and the online mode only offers the most basic functions. Although, if you can't stand the realism you’ll find in most of today’s racing games and just want something fun to play – Grid might be the game for you.

The game combines some of the core aspects of its predecessors, but fails to deliver a complete and exciting experience. It lacks content and variation and gets old quick in comparison to other recent race games.

Codemasters' attempt to revive GRID has a lot of great ideas but struggles to bring them all together in a cohesive fashion.
