It's absolutely beautiful, one of those games where every scene is a painting. It's hard to believe these graphics are possible on the PS4. It plays so fluidly and with such incredible detail.

Positive points - the main story, the boss battles, the world exploration. The one-on-one sword fights are next-level it was like experiencing a Kurosawa film.

Negative points - its long, and big, and getting 100% is a grind. My recommendation is don't go for 100% just play the main story. It's like an epic-adventure film that way.

Don't miss this game its a superb swansong for the PS4.

The history and the atmosphere together with an outstanding graphic section are undoubtedly the best of this title. It really makes you feel like a samurai who has to change his code and fighting style to survive the first Mongol invasion. With regard to gameplay and the open world, the truth is that it brings almost nothing that we have not seen in other games such as the AC saga: collectibles, territories and prisoners to release, places to visit to improve the status of our character, stealth , executions, everything very similar but with a Japanese atmosphere. Some characteristics such as the different combat postures which we must alternate depending on the enemy we face gives freshness to the gameplay. Still, overall the game is amazing, certainly one of the contenders for this year's goty. Highly recommended. Expand

This is a really good first game in a new IP and I really like what Sucker Punch is trying to do. The game is beautiful and each new area really feels incredible to explore. The samurai combat is quite fun and stylish, and I liked a lot of the ideas for side quests and exploration.

I did feel though that this game was so close to being really amazing, and it doesn't quite get there for me. The story is very generic, but good enough to keep me interested and the characters were mildly compelling. Jin himself isn't the most interesting protagonist, though. I liked how your allies each get their own character arc and companion missions, sort of like in Mass Effect 2. It all could have been so much more compelling, though, if the dialogue wasn't so on the nose or if they took the time to plant plot details earlier and have them pay off later -- rather than have important things pop up right when they storyline is about to end. It's sort of hard to explain, but all the pieces are there for a good story, they just need a good editor.

There are also a lot of annoying little things that I hope a sequel does away with. Like, for instance, when you start any quest in the game you have to walk up to a character, exchange a few generic lines of dialogue, then play an unskippable cutscene of more boring lines of dialogue, typically followed by a trailing mission to where the actual mission takes place -- so that the characters can exchange more generic dialogue. Even just cut that in half and it would be so much more enjoyable.

A sequel could also be so much better if it just further develops the stealth mechanics and climbing. Stealth was far too easy even playing on hard, and it was often far more satisfying to just walk up and do the ingenious standoff-mechanic and fight everyone head on. The climbing was actually much more fun than in games like Uncharted, and I like that they borrowed the Uncharted 4 grappling hook. But then there just aren't many uses for the climbing and grappling hook mechanics.

There's one last thing that didn't work in my opinion. The whole game is just gorgeous and filled with truly jaw-dropping scenery, then you get to the third act and it's this bleak, war-torn winter. In theory I think it could work, but it really ripped away one thing that made this game uniquely enjoyable. For my money, this game is at its best in the second act, when each new area is more beautiful than the last and you're sword-dueling under autumn leaves, waterfalls, and giant candle-lit statues. The third act focuses a little too much on the narrative rather than the stunning atmosphere that really makes the game.

Overall, this is a great first game and I have high hopes for this series.

Ghost of Tsushima is the first game that I have platinumed in years, though this doesn't mean it's a perfect game. Far from it.

There is no denying the techinal achievement Sucker Punch have pulled off here. Getting GoT to run smoothly on a base PS4 is nothing short of astonishing, and aside from a few framerate hiccups towards the end of the story, its an incredible experience. The level of detail applied to the enviroment helps make it feel as close to photo realistic as the Playstation 4 is going to ever achieve. The way the grass flows in the wind, how Jin reaches down from his horse to feel the flowers through his finger tips as he rides. These small elements are moments of wonder that can't help but make you smile. The games photo mode does an excellent job of highlighting Tsushimas beauty, and in some ways becomes a mini game on its own. With so many filters, timescales and bokeh options applied, its hard not to stop at every cliff face to take "just one more" photo.

Loading and fast travel are incredibly fast. Weirdly infact. I can't be sure someone didn't slip one of these new PS5 SSD's into my console when I wasn't looking. If this is any indication of the future, then I'm sad to announce that people will be hearing from me less due to the reduction my available time to pick up my phone.

While the graphical achievements are clear for all to see, the story is where Ghost of Tsushima falls a little flat. For a game with such an intriguing and well acted antagonist, an opportunity is missed to delve far deeper into Khotun Khan. Having an almost 'Thanos' feel to him, constantly pulling strings in the background feels ominous and powerful, but the payoff doesn't match the journey. Jin's backstory and upbringing is fleshed out well through flashback cutscenes within the main story that help you invest more in the supporting casts decisions, but you never feel a true connection to anyone. The game pulls off only one real gutpunching moment, and it doesn't come from where you'd expect.

Story wise, the game is essentially split into 3 chapters, You can choose to concentrate solely on these story missons and make a B line for the credits, but so much story and lore is missed through side chartacter development if completing the story is your only goal. its recommended you at least follow character arcs that you feel you have an affinity with, and the game does a good job of introducing you to the first of each of these through the main scenerio. The acting and motion capture is strong. It's no The Last of US, but it holds up well over Tsusima's 30hrs and never feels awkward or stiff.

The overall gameplay is a mixed bag. The combat itself is strong, offering you 4 different unlockable stances to deal with different enemy variations. This makes the combat feel deep, and there's little more enjoyable in the game than switching between multiple enemies quickly while choosing the correct stance. On top of a boat load of unlockable techniques and passives, Jin will take upwards of 50 hrs to fully upgrade everything he has to offer. Unfortunately the variation of gameplay can quickly become repetitve while utilising these abilities. Side quests are all too familar and always appear to end the same way. Liberating Tsushimas many mongol camps can be fun when fighting head on, but due to the games terrible stealth mechanics, approaching them silently all becomes a bit copy and paste. Enemy AI is almost laughable while in stealth mode, which doesn't help anyone looking to fully immerse themseleves in this part of Japanese history. I doubt there was ever a mongol that chased a Japanese Samurai from 2ft behind, only to give up whilst being audibly confused, because the samurai entered a tent.

saying this, one of the most notable features Ghost of Tsushima offers is the complete lack of UI, and it works wonders. With a swipe of the Dualshocks touchpad, Jin can follow the wind to his next objective, or become sidetracked by a small yellow leading him to one of the islands many mysteries...

Fast forward 10 hrs, and the repetitve nature of the now highly annoying the yellow bird appearing on your screen every 3 mins just feels like a game mechanic in itself. It becomes all it set out to destroy (I assume). The world loses its sense of awe and magic it has in its first few hours, mainly because this now stupid bird (You can't shoot it with an arrow by the way) never leads you to anything new. Its always another Fox Den, another Haiku, another Hotspring. You never feel like had you not followed tweety bird you would be missing out on a secret, and thats a shame. The premise is great, and works for a time, but i'm sure it will be improved upon by others in the next few years.

Overall, Ghost of Tsushima is an enjoyable swansong for the PS4. What it lacks in gameplay variety, it makes of for in its sheer beauty and fantastic combat. Hopefully with a bit more fleshing out in a sequel, it can hit new highs.

How Ghost of Tsushima Ruined Video Games For Me

Most of what I am about to write is nothing that hasn't already been said by professional and humble video gamers alike. But what I haven't heard about is the impact that this game has had on my video gaming experience as a whole. I only realized the depth of this change weeks after I had fought my last Mongol and platinumed the game. In a pursuit to find the next adventure to sink my teeth into, I found myself comparing every other game to Ghost regardless of what genre they belonged to. That's how you know Ghost is truly a masterpiece.

In a day and age where video games go gold and are released in a half-baked state, and then gamers are asked to not only pay full price, but also have no guarantee that the original vision of the game may never be fully realized, Ghost is a refreshing reminder of what a finished and polished product should be. With the amount of action and scenery on-screen at all times, you would expect frame-rate drops, nasty pop-ins, character clipping issues, and everything else we have come to see from largely interactive, open-world games. While playing Ghost, I can count on one hand the number of times the frame-rate dropped enough for me to notice.

Even if most of the other large open-world games solved the glitches and frame-rate problems, I have never seen a game optimized as well as Ghost. Let's take fast traveling for example. By definition, it should be a simple and "fast" way of making your way across a large map. But what I have come to see in most games is that many times, it's neither simple nor fast. In other games, there are times when I need to decide whether or not to use the fast travel system because either it's inconveniently designed through specific travel points which require you to go there first, or the load times are so unbearable, that riding my horse (I'm looking at you AC: Odyssey) is much faster than the "fast travel" system. In Ghost, since fast traveling was actually quick, I sometimes couldn't even finish reading the on-screen tip, so I never had to choose what to do out of need. I could choose to enjoy the scenery along the way or use the fast travel system to get there quick. And when I got there, I was never disappointed. I never grew tired of discovering new locations because each place seemed hand-built to evoke a sense of awe and majesty. From the top of a cliff overlooking a waterfall, to the endless fields of colorful flowers swaying in the wind, the joy of finding a new place stayed with me all the way until I hit 100% completion of the game.

I could go on for days about the combat, the gear/item management, leveling system, cinematics, voice acting, story, etc... but again, it's nothing you haven't heard before. It's all fantastic. Here's where it's different. Every game I play from this day on will, inevitably, be compared to Ghost, for better or for worse. This game ruined other video games for me. It is a technical masterpiece that, for me, has created a ripple effect so large, that it affects not only the games I play now, but also show how games in the past have missed the mark, and sets the bar high for games of the future. This is what a finished, well-thought out, lovingly optimized, open-world adventure game should be: perfection on every level.

I usualy dont like protagonists with calm-unintresting personality, but for this game setting, it fits really well. I did not expect to like it so much. Missions are interesting, though there are few missions that could be better.

Overall I am really impressed what they did with this game. I really appreciate that Sucker Punch delivered everything they promised to their fans with trailers and gameplay that they showed us. They did not have to lie about their game with fake trailers like other developer team did.

The other biggest nitpicks could be some of the bland open world style that we've come to know from Ubisoft get really tiring if you already played through that formula a thousand times, GOT still has clever ways of making that feel fresh with non intrusive hud and mechanics that allows for natural exploration. Even as a western made game it feels very authentic to the time period of it's setting with not much out of place considering that fact (perhaps not historically but hey it's a video game). The combat is fast and deadly with a matter of hits possibly meaning death which makes the player really feel like a skilled samurai slicing through enemies with well-timed parries, fluid movement and strikes. You are given many options on how to deal with situations and play in general, from a straw hat samurai who challenges their opponents head on to a stand off (duel) or a ghost who uses stealth, tools, and flaming arrows, using the environment to their advantage.

The map is huge and well crafted with much to do, the empty space it does have is not vast and empty but beautiful and carefully detailed. The mini map system is none existent due to a unique mechanic they've added which is most welcome as it allows you to take in the atmosphere rather than focus on the corner of the screen. After close to 15 hours in I have barely scratched the surface of all there is to do and am happily looking forward to a long journey ahead. Definitely the best immersive samurai experience I've ever played.

1: The story is engaging and dramatic. Jin Sakai is wrought with conflict as his home is under siege by the mongol empire, and his point of view on the art of war changes. Therefore, he must abandon what he knows and become a new kind of warrior. One that goes against the code of the samurai. The story is split into multiple arcs with side quests that are just as engaging as the main game and are hardly worth passing. And when the credits rolled, I was actually crying. And very few games can make me do that.

2: The gameplay is tight, responsive, and fun. Switching between sword stances mid-combat to be more effective against enemies with certain weapons makes every fight heart-pumping, and a little bit strategic. And all the unlockable combos via technique points are all useful in some way. And when you're not fighting all-out, you're being a stealthy ghost taking out enemies from the shadows, either with a bow or a dagger, while jumping and swinging with a grappling hook.

3: The appeal of this game can be described in one word: GORGEOUS. This game is so beautiful and massive, with the entire island of Tsushima open to explore. Japan is one of my favorite countries, because it has an intriguing culture and history to share. The way people bow to greet you, the many haikus you can compose, the authentic 13th century buildings you can walk around, both outside and inside, sequences with sliding doors to open, etc.

The only gripe I have with this game is the performance. It generally runs at 30 FPS, but will sometimes drop into the mid-teens. The first time I experienced frame drops was during a cutscene, and the final time I experienced frame drops during my first playthrough was near the end of the third act, when you're facing Khotun Khan. But, luckily, the frame drops aren't exactly game-breaking, and the game hasn't crashed on me a single time.

Do I recommend this game? Absolutely. This game is freaking awesome, and I enjoyed every second playing it.

Ghost of Tsushima is a flawed, but fun, game. While the gameplay itself was solid, and the story was decent, I definitely expected a lot more from Sony’s final PlayStation 4 exclusive. It had enough to keep me hooked, but lacked the polish we’ve all grown to love from a Sony first party game.

Ultimately, it feels like the game could have benefited from a smaller scope or a more linear structure. Focus on the duels could have created a more engrossing product, especially if it honed in on the narrative for a more concise and cinematic experience. But as it stands, Ghost of Tsushima is another AAA open world title and doesn’t seek to define itself as anything other than that.
