To go through the game you have to go through the whole open area world a tons of times, what becomes very boring with the time and same with farming. ... Expand

Incredible music, gorgeous world, epic combat and engaging story. FFXV really nailed it especially in the mind blowing attention to detail.

It is amusing to see how many people came into FF expecting the same volume of story we have seen in other FF's. Issue is EVERY single FF has been linear. Linearity affords 40 straight hours of condensed story and laughably the people who cry about

FFXV's charm is in the journey and exploration, that was its aim and it did that in a truly masterful way. Will go down as a phenominal title in the series!

I found myself lost exploring the beautiful open world taking on dozens of side quests for hours without touching the story. Much like the tie in film kingsglaive I found the story very rushed, poorly written and hard to follow for the most part. But the gameplay itself makes up for those shortcomings. The combat is a joy, being fairly easy to learn but hard to master. I also very much enjoyed the modern designs of classic series creatures and the modernized high fantasy world. A little disappointing is the lack of Nobou Umatses score writing, making the soundtrack a bit forgettable. This game actually renewed my interest in the series which I never would have expected. I really don't understand the bad critics on this game. I played with all FF games since the first one. I hated the 12 and the 13. But this one is a masterpiece. My top 5 would be:

    2- FF15
    3- FF6
    4- FF9
    5- FF10

Clocking 36 hours so far, I've completed a handful of side quests, and the entire main story of this game. As of now, my conclusion is that Final Fantasy XV is a fantastic addition to any RPG fan's collection. As of now, my conclusion is that Final Fantasy XV is a fantastic addition to any RPG fan's collection. I give this game an 8.6/10, so obviously, I definitely found a number of faults in the game as well; but overall, it's a fantastic Final Fantasy adventure set in a beautiful Final Fantasy world that I'm going to enjoy spending another dozen or more hours exploring.

    The Good:
-The characters have fantastic chemistry, and listening to the side banter as you undertake quests or move from quest location to quest location was great. Doing side quests also nets you some additional dialogue scenes that sometimes gives you even more insight into your entourage's personalities, and I felt like the "bond" I forged with my team was really from all the side questing I did.
-The battle system. There are some negative aspects to it too that I'll list later, but overall, it was entertaining enough, and gets fairly challenging for some of the side quests or random overtuned bosses you find as you explore the map. Main story battles are never "that hard" really. But I don't ever think I've ever encountered a truly "difficult" storyline battle in any other FF either (between I to XIII-2), so that's fine.
-The "open world"-ness of this game was perfect, in my opinion. The last thing I wanted was a Witcher/Falllout/ES clone with a Final Fantasy facelift, and I think XV handled the balance perfectly. Sure, there aren't AS MANY things to do in this world as you would find in, say, Skyrim or Oblivion, nor do the side missions have the same amount of depth as in Witcher 3. But what I really wanted out of this game as a franchise with JRPG roots was really one main storyline, and then supplemental quests on the side to help fill out the experience with more fun things to do that don't have to become entirely new storylines on their own, unlike how the several branching/diverging side storylines are for the side quests in Bethesda titles. So something reminiscent of hunts in FFXII, or catching monsters in FFX for the arena, or finding random things on the map like Chocographs. And that *flavor* of side quest is exactly what we got here for the most part.
-The story; overall, I liked it. It gave a good sense of grandeur that didn't seem overblown or overly cliche. Again, some negatives here that I'll expound upon below, but I honestly don't understand how some folks are saying they didn't "get it" without Kingsglaive or Brotherhood. I haven't seen either, and I feel like I 100% understand the story, and was 100% happy with how the game resolved the primary issue.
    -The graphics are AMAZING
    -The soundtrack is AMAZING

    The Bad:
-The battle system seemed disorganized at times. Like many have said, for simpler fights, it does deteriorate into button mashing (for some of the side quest fights, there does seem to be more structure though; opponents telegraphing moves for you to avoid, telegraphing openings to get a good combo in etc). But I was hoping they'd take some inspiration from the Kingdom Hearts series in designing the battle system, which they didn't really. Also, I rarely ever found myself using magic in the 36 hours I've played so far, which was a little disappointing.
-Like I said above, the story was good, content-wise. But it DID feel quite rushed in the last 5 chapters or so. All of a sudden, the game decides to hit you with 2-3 big plot points with extremely brief dialogue scenes, that make sense, but you just don't have time to take it all in and appreciate what just happened because it all happened so quickly. I think this problem would have been resolved had the game been designed to have maybe 10-15 more hours of storyline, as opposed to the ~20 hours of story it actually has.
-The cast: the characters we got, like I said above, were great together. But I really miss the old FF style of having a larger cast of characters that you slowly meet throughout your adventure, and I was extremely disappointed that they went with such a small cast.
-Minor possible issue: a large chunk of the side quests are "hunt" based. For some gamers, this may feel "grindy" or repetitive, which is understandable. I myself enjoyed the hunts though, as I like feeling like I'm getting sent out to kill huge things in the wilds. I haven't finished them all though, but already I've seen a few throwbacks to old FF's, which was great

So overall, I thought this game was absolutely a joy to play so far, and has a new "feel" to it that isn't quite "like the old school FF's", but rather a feel that can be described as being "uniquely Final Fantasy XV". My favorite part of this game has got to be immersing myself on the "road trip" with the main characters, and getting to know them throughout the story and side q's. I am absolutely looking forward to what kind of new experiences Square Enix brings out in the future!

At first the sheer scale of the game had taken my breath away, and with out any major development I became quickly attached to the characters. The battle system took me some getting use to at first. I wanted to treat it like a hack and slash style game, and not the Diablo esq hold down the button game it is. I am saddened that magic doesn't play as big of a role in this game, but the combat system is fun and makes up for the lack of magic. I hope to see magic get a better role in XVI. The story presentation is well done IMO, and allows you to take breaks when you see fit like older FF games. My only complaint so far is that trying to venture out into the world at night when your still in early game is a near death sentence because most of the monsters will vastly outclass you. Overall I'm extremely happy with XV so far. It has given me hope for future titles of the Final Fantasy series. This game wont be making my top 3 quite yet, but it has managed to push X out of my 5 slot. Expand

A fantastic game worthy of the Final Fantasy Franchise. This game met my expectations and more. As a long time fan of the franchise dating back to the release of FF1 on the NES, This game has not disappointed. Now I am not saying there are no issues, but I am saying the issue in this game do not interfere with the greatness of FFXV.

I would by no means hold this game up next to FFVI.

I would by no means hold this game up next to FFVI. FFVII, FFVIII, or FFVIX which are all 10's and the best of the series in my opinion. I would however say it's as good as FFX as far a story, world, and characters, and I give that game a solid 9-9.5, and as far as game play I'd rate it in the same spectrum as FFXII which I would rate with an 8-8.5.

So like 10 the story is and world is amazing, I find myself getting lost in it for hours while enjoying every moment. On the other hand like 12 there are definitely issues with combat and side questing becomes redundant, but the rest of the game shines through the issues.

All that said I feel this game deserves a solid 9, as a long time fan of the series I not disappointed at all.

Don't let the 10 years of development hell scare you: this game is amazing! Although the narrative gets a bit weird and the camera might get bumpy in narrow spaces, the characters are charismatic enough to overcome this and so is the finely tuned gameplay. Final Fantasy XV is an amazing experience, one that kept me come back for more. It is worth every year of delay.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TL:DR All of the bad things people are saying about the game are true, some of us are just weighting things differently; I am going to give it a 7.

I played the game for 60 hours and enjoyed my time and may have even shed a tear or two at the end; that being said, there are some absolutely weird things in this game.

Plot/Story: I kept waiting and waiting for plot holes to get solved but more and more just opened up. Literally nothing important happened in my game for the first 45 hours (through chapter 8 or so?), and then 10 hours later the whole game was over. I even watched Kingsglaive to make sure I knew the backstory. I mean, an evil empire is on the warpath for 150 years... and then a month after they capture their biggest target, the entire empire just dissolves and is a footnote in the story? Cor tells us we need to gather all of the old kings weapons because we need their power but then you never hear about that again. Multiple characters go back and forth between evil and friendly without much explanation (Aranea... Ravus?...) Prompto has the big revelation about being born a magitek soldier, and they basically say "Ok fine" and move on. They try to force some love subplot with Iris (which they keep pronounce e-ris instead of eye-ris), but then you just never see her again. Yet, with all of these major story plot holes... the game takes the time to have Ignis wake my character up so I can help him stir soup in the morning after camping. Huh???

I tried to do the basic side quests it kept giving me but then I ended up 30 levels higher than suggested for the climactic battles.

I played the game on Active combat mode which was fine, but the targeting was off most of the time, especially if you could attack multiple points on a mob. I never figured out how to consistently target a mob's weak point. Having to stop what you're doing to craft a spell and then equip it like a piece of gear is clunky, there is no way around that.

The summon animation is cool, but you hardly ever use the summons. I might have had 5 summons the entire game? And that is with a couple that happen right at the end.

I fished a bunch, I guess that was fine. The Coleman camping gear ads every time I had a fishing cutscene with the npc were cringeworthy.

My wife watched Kingsglaive with me and then the start of the game with me, she made it not 5 minutes before you meet the scantily-clad gas-station hooker whose chest is so large she is falling out of her shirt. I had built up the game to my wife on how they had spent 10 years crafting this amazing universe and then when that happened I had no defense. It is embarrassing. Aranea too. Just unnecessary. I expect that sort of thing in a campy game like Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball... not in Final Fantasy.

I guess they knew the music was bad and that you would be riding in cars and/or walking around for LONG periods of time, so they let you buy better music from their past games and listen to that instead. I probably spent 5+ hours either riding from one place to another in the car or walking through empty fields trying to do the fetch quests/'hunts'

Obviously the game has a lot of issues, but at the end of the day, I had an enjoyable experience. Even if the combat targeting didn't work great, I got to where I enjoyed the combat teleporting around and calling for Gladio to hit some Downhammers when we had the tech points for it. Many parts of the game look pretty good, I enjoyed the scenery. The photo taking aspect of it was nice, and I liked how they worked that into the story at the ending etc.

I was rating this game an 8 when I started this review, but now that I've typed all that out, I've decided to go with a 7. I will not be playing any DLCs, I assume they are stuff that should have been in the main game to flesh the story out but the devs wanted to make some extra money so they left them out of the primary game.

I'm giving this game a 10 for one reason: Because I believe you can rate a game based on the way it makes you feel before, during and after playing it. The same way The Last Guardian was imperfect technically speaking but was flawless in the way it made you feel, Final Fantasy XV may have some flaws but works masterfully with the way the player feels during the story. And I'm not saying itI'm giving this game a 10 for one reason: Because I believe you can rate a game based on the way it makes you feel before, during and after playing it. The same way The Last Guardian was imperfect technically speaking but was flawless in the way it made you feel, Final Fantasy XV may have some flaws but works masterfully with the way the player feels during the story. And I'm not saying it makes you overly emotional or uses cheap tricks to make you cry; this game makes you feel exactly what the developers wanted you to feel each step of the way. I was halfway through the game when I realised I had felt excitement, happiness, curiosity, impatience, anger, loneliness, frustration, insecurity, confusion, heartbreak and many more emotions I could barely identify, all in one game. And let me tell you something, you will not find many games capable of making you truly FEEL the whole time, even if it's just feeling at peace.

Another point many people criticize is the story. Well, I don't think it is simple, or bland, or unfinished. I think it was presented in such a subtle way that you needed to actually pay attention to details in order to understand it and put the pieces together. Everything has a reason, even those little secondary missions people won't stop complaining about. They are there simply to make you bond with your friends, to have an opportunity to show their personalities, to make you feel accompanied. And by the point where you decide you keep going with the story, you have already formed a bond, you feel better just by knowing those three characters are there by your side.

I could use the 5000 characters to explain why I still think about FFXV days after finishing it, but I think it's better if you just give it a chance and try it for yourself.

+ but - I personally dig the writing but the lack of dialogue sometimes **** the “roadtrip” feeling
+ but - Boss battles are epic but some are a mess (still a memorable mess)

    - The plot doesn't explains itself that good at the end
    - You have to watch “Brotherhood” to connect to the characters and “Kingsglaive” to get what’s happening because like I just said, the plot isn’t that self-explanatory
    - Parts of the story were left out for future DLCs
    - The regalia mechanics are very limited (in the “Regalia type-F” too) and are the reason I have seen the “Game Over” screen.
    - Sometimes in combat the camera **** up

In conclusion, this new Final Fantasy formula works, this is a must-buy for fans and newcomers. The story has it's problems but still a memorable entry in the saga

The map is huge and full of life compared to those stressing long hallways of FF-XIII. Now one of the things that makes this game amazing is the gameplay. It's easy to use, adjustable and comfortable both for those who knows the game and those who has just started. On the one hand is pretty exciting having Multiplayer in future, it'd be a great experience, if they make something worth it.
Unfortunately we also got bad news, some missions are way too repetitive, so that means you gotta run long distances to get to your mission checkpoint and tends to get exhaustive sometimes but is an open world game, where you can enjoy full detailed landscapes, random battles and funny comments from the characters. We can't let these small details ruin us the game. We know it has been a long wait and we expected more but let's give a chance, I'm pretty sure you will enjoy it.

Fantastic game with great characters and a beautiful open world with so much to do. The combat is simple to understand but has enough depth to keep it fun throughout the game. But no game is perfect so I will say that the car rides can be boring but you can fast travel most of the time and chocobos are very fun to ride. I don't think this game is amazing, but it's very good. I'm enjoying it more than Final Fantasy 13. The combat system is very different compared to the previous FF games. It doesn't have that traditional turn based mechanic. Surprisingly, the new combat system works well. I made a few mistakes while playing the game, but now I'm getting a hang of it. The graphics are so damn gorgeous, definitely the best looking FF game at the moment, and I've never played a FF game with a scale this massive before. The world in this game is huge, because I've seen the map size and its pretty damn big. As for the story, if you guys haven't seen Kingsglaive and also the anime series of FF XV. I suggest watching those first before playing, just to get a better sense of the story. Right now, I'm still exploring the game so I might change the score in the future. Expand

Im lazy and not about to write a whole bunch but this game is fantastic! Ive played ff 7, 10, 12, 13 and spinoffs. I do really enjoy turnbased games and we dont have any serious mature rpgs like that on ps4 in particular. And would have liked ff 15 to be more classic turn base. But I do like god of war and devil may cry style combat and this game still somewhat blends turn base and actionIm lazy and not about to write a whole bunch but this game is fantastic! And would have liked ff 15 to be more classic turn base. But I do like god of war and devil may cry style combat and this game still somewhat blends turn base and action combat into one!! But its mostly fast action.

The world, characters, some quests, most story missions, about half the music and especially the COMBAT is fantastic!!!! The better you get the more stylish you can be and can get better at controlling the camera smh lol but its not that bad maybe 20 percent of the time it will get wonky on tall skinny enemies. The story is meh, I geuss you have to watch kingslaive but the voice acting is really good most often and ive never really heard anybody say something cheezy, which is good for newcomers. Well prompto might but his crew calls him out on it lol this game is really an 8.5+ for sure!!!

Only drawback is imo very slight camera issues, frame stutter slightly in altissia city on ps4, some areas are a little empty, only some. Other areas have monsters spawning often but where one dungeon was huge and not many enemies or structures, (I think i went there early before a side quest boss was ready) but other dungeons are awesome!!

BTW!!!! Most of the fun isnt necessarily from the story but alternate paths, taking your time exploring and the side quests that have some of the best bosses. Well, besides the 2nd half of the game has some over the top fights! Really fun! And im on ch. 12 and 55 hours in. This is a legit opinion fellas. I gave 10 to bump it up to my 8.5+

After so many years of development, Final Fantasy XV is not what I expected it to be. The universe is immense and beautiful and the characters are just fine. But the story is short and disappointing and the gameplay suffers from lack of depth. FFXV is a good game, but it can never bring the former glories back to the series.

Even as you reflect on the rarity of a blockbuster that's willing to take real risks, you'll be left with the uncomfortable realisation that ten years wasn't quite long enough, after all. Those jagged edges are, in the end, just a little too sharp. [Feb 2017, p.110]

Despite a divided feel, torn between what it was and what it plans to be, Final Fantasy XV has a lot to offer. If you're a diehard JRPG fan, then it's a positive sign that the series can cross over to a new format. And if you're just looking for an open world adventure, Final Fantasy XV certainly has that in spades, while doing just enough things differently to separate it from the likes of Dragon Age and Elder Scrolls.
