No amount of visual updates can mask the fact that Type-0 was clearly never designed to be on consoles. What great ideas it has are buried under a story that’s rendered meaningless and a camera that prevents you from seeing most of them in the first place.

Type-0 HD's many technical shortcomings may have been forgiven if it were ported to the PS Vita instead of a current-gen console. Despite including stalwarts like chocobos, Odin, Moogles, Airships and a major character named Cid, Type-0 HD did not feel like a Final Fantasy product, especially in terms of quality.

I hate the reviewers who are giving this a lower score just because it's not a justified $60 purchase since it was a PSP game. Enough of that!I hate the reviewers who are giving this a lower score just because it's not a justified $60 purchase since it was a PSP game. Enough of that! I am basing my score on how good it is, and it is probably the best spin-off Final Fantasy I have played. The amount of content in here, and the fact that it was originally a PSP title, it blows my mind. Awesome storyline, fun combat, and a great cast of characters. It's a must buy for any FF fan and anyone who wants to try out a fun action JRPG. Full Review »

Final Fantasy Type-0 is possibly the worst Final Fantasy game I have ever played. And I've played pretty much all of them.

    Keep in mind
Final Fantasy Type-0 is possibly the worst Final Fantasy game I have ever played. And I've played pretty much all of them.

Keep in mind I've only play for about an hour and it's almost more than I could stomach. I'm trying really hard to enjoy the game but every time I do the game seems to go out of it's way to make me hate it.

Let's start with the camera. I understand it's a port from a PSP game but the camera shouldn't FIGHT the player. You'll constantly find yourself fighting against what the camera wants to do because it's generally what you DON'T want it to do even more than you'll be fighting enemies.

Next the voice acting. They pretty much hired the second worst voice actors in the business to voice every character. I say second worst because I have heard worse. But not by much.

Every single character in the game gets on my nerves. So far it's the largest cast of thoroughly unlikeable party members I have ever seen in a Final Fantasy game. Sure there's always that one or two characters in the game I don't like (though I grew to like Vanille and Rikku in their respective games). But out of the 14 party members the only two that don't make me want to punch them in the face every time they're on screen is Ace and Eight. And that's probably only because aside from the opening Ace hasn't been on screen again. And Eight has had one of the best voice actors so far despite all he's said is "I'm busy punching things." When asked what he was doing over the COMM. COMM is an acronym for something, by the way, don't ask me what it stands for because I don't remember. (The terrible personality and voice acting also applies to the NPCs, by the way.)

Which brings me to the next point. The game literally BOMBARDS you with the world right off the start instead of gradually introducing you to it like other Final Fantasy games. This just results in information overload that left me with not knowing what the hell was going on.

The game is also awful at explaining anything about the gameplay. At one point it's trying to teach you about which button uses your spell and which one your special ability. But instead of actually telling you what button is which it literally just says "The corresponding button". Presumably because you can remap them later. But during a tutorial you should probably at least try to point out which is which. It also does an awful job explaining what Special Orders are or how the Support system works or why party members are highlighted gold on the party select screen. I had to check gamefaqs for the answer. I shouldn't have to check gamefaqs for something the game should be explaining itself.

Combat is also a pain. Mostly because the target select doesn't work. For targetting enemies it works fine. But the game also tells you you can tilt the right stick down and select targets on the ground like fallen objects or dead enemies. That way you can extract their Phantoma and do damage to the enemies around them. Except that doesn't work. I've tried every combination of the right stick and the lock on button and it just refuses to do it.

Character models look great. They actually look better than the ones in the cutscenes. And leagues better than every NPC since they look straight out of the PS2 era. And not the late cycle PS2 era.

I understand that Type 0 was SquareEnix trying to do something extremely different from the usual Final Fantasy formula. But if you're going to do that at least make sure it works at a fundamental level and also put in a tutorial that's going to actually teach the gamer about all these new features you're trying to implement. Or at least bother to print out an instruction manual. The game already feels like a throwback to the late 90s/early 2000's.

I don't understand the people saying "the soundtrack is great". The battle music is great. All the music I've encountered outside of the missions is god awful with the exception of the classic Final Fantasy music it will play while wandering the school and the world map music which is basically the chocobo theme. Though it's kind of odd since you aren't riding a chocobo.

The Final Fantasy 15 demo that comes with it only serves to highlight all of Type 0's faults. And it doesn't help that they have the same kind of action combat. Except the Final Fantasy 15 demo DOES IT RIGHT. The camera doesn't fight with you. The characters are voiced well (not great) and are actually likeable for the most part.

In conclusion, the Final Fantasy 15 demo is the only thing justifying this pile of crap's price tag. As a port it should be priced at $40 or less like every other port of a NEWER game that's come out on the PS4. I would maybe buy this game for $20. $30 at most. I can understand why SquareEnix would package it with the Final Fantasy 15 demo. It wouldn't sell enough by itself to actually be profitable and for good reason.

This is a poorly converted PSP game that you have the gall to charge $60 for. The graphics are beyond horrible, but that could be overlooked if the gameplay were great. Sadly, it is not even close to good. It is completely unappealing, boring, real time arcadey drivel that consists of tossing cards at enemies. That might be OK if it were a card based game, but it isn't. If I wanted real time button mashing, I'd play a Diablo game. The interface is also terribly unappealing as is the story. I haven't been this disappointed in a Square Enix game since The Last Remnant. And the Final Fantasy XV demo? It is not much better. It doesn't feel or look impressive at all, and could have been right at home last gen. And the combat? You guessed it, more real-time drivel that dries to be stylish but is ultimately, dry, boring, and much too "sci fi" for my tastes. Do yourselves a favor and buy the FFX/X-2 remaster instead, which in another cash grab, is now coming to current gen as well. I could not put this game on eBay fast enough. Full Review »
