'A Final Fantasy like no other, with gore!', people said. What is more, the trailers showed off the long-awaited return of the JRPG world map, complete with chocobo riding and even an airship. This was - supposedly - Final Fantasy as it should be: for a new generation of gamers, with throwbacks to the classics. Fourteen playable characters, each with their own style, to top it all off. How could it possibly go wrong?...

...In reality? It is nothing more than a low budget, hollow mess that somehow manages to merge Japanese school setting silliness (Persona this ain't, folks) and mini-skirts with... FFXIII's stellar writing. And for anyone that has heard 'L'cie' said countless times without context already, they will know full well what this means: how NOT to tell a story. There are no characters to care for, or even like as people: just poorly dubbed, terribly written caricatures that each have their own distinctive quirk, such as the guy that says "yo!" and struggles to form sentences, or the four-eyed uptight class president type that pushes up her glasses as she speaks, all smart-like. Only a handful get more than a few lines of voiced dialogue, and the characterisation of the one that does say a lot consists of the following: "You killed my brother by existing, MNEH, so I am going to sulk and be emo over in my corner. MNEH!"

Graphically, it is awful for a PS4 game, as expected... yet somehow still worse than expected. It looks strangely enough like a PSP game; one poorly disguised as a PS4 game, rather than a true remaster. The main character models were edited, the school... and little else. However, the flat faces and horrid textures are only noticeable after experiencing the motion blur added to try to mask the graphical inadequacies. When locked-on and dodge rolling, the game went to great lengths to convince me it was not a game created with camera control in mind. Combat literally becomes a chaotic blur of invincibility frame rolling. And aside from a FEW scenes not running off the in-game graphics engine, such as the almost Advent Children-esque ending where the cast assembled to cry together like I very much wanted to whilst playing, every scene consisted entirely of characters repeating THE SAME exact basic mannerisms over and over as they remained standing/static. It is no prettier to watch than it is to play. By the time the game looks almost impressive, the credits start playing. Seriously.

But no-one got this for the graphics... or for Type-0 even, in truth. Most knew it was a remaster of a PSP game that, more importantly, came with a FFXV demo. In an attempt to validate my PS4 purchase as a JRPGer of old, I got it anyway... only to later lament my idiocy. What really matters is the game itself. The best way to describe it is as FFXIII gone wrong - if you do not think it did already, that is - with a school setting. It is on the grimdark side of grim where the main characters refuse to die even when they are killed in battle (unlike in, say, Valkyria Chronicles) but do have some blood splattered on their faces from time to time; just to show how dark and gritty the world is. The boy / girl band character posing at the start was a warning sign from the Gods I should have been more receptive of, honestly. The game starts with a typically long-winded Japanese 'JUST DIE ALREADY!' random death that drained all of the impact from it without it just... happening. It went on for so damned long that the lead (?), Ace, went back to the guy to see if he was dead yet / say goodbye after having only just said hello. But, hey: a chocobo died. All people seemed to talk about before the release is how *A* giant chicken died. Right at the start. I mean, that is as dark as you can get for a Final Fantasy game, right?... It is just a pity no other chocobos died for forced tragic effect at all throughout the story. I guess one was enough to set the tone, ready for the player to jump happily into school life.

In this dark world of Japanese 'THE HORROR' dread, you spend most of your time at school--interacting with blocky-faced teenage NPCs. Because, OF COURSE, the main characters are a diverse cast of elites in 'Class Zero'; fit for any anime. A moggle says "Kupo~!" one of two ways over and over as it teaches you how to get experience points without doing anything (which actually works better than killing things, when offered) in mentally stimulating SAME EXACT SCREEN panning lessons. Even more exciting, one can pursue their innermost desire of spying on a flirty instructor with big boobs by planting a camera on her gifts and and casting 'sheer' to remove her clothes, before proceeding to admire her thong and bra combo. It truly is a realistic Final Fantasy, in that sense. Every school day is spent in non-lesson bliss; running around the same select few areas after every mission hoping to see new characters with exclamation marks above their heads to ironically waste the limited time given before missions in order to not waste time. By the end of the game, after 40+hrs of doing this, you will either be left desperately trudging on every 2-6hrs in a attempt to spy on a woman, like me, or just fast-forwarding to missions to end your suffering. In many ways, the school aspect of the game is a subtle metaphor representing the life cycle of the average human male.

But what about life outside school--THE WORLD MAP? Well, the only monsters visible on the world map are generic lev99 ones designed with the sole intent of ruining the day of the unwitting. There are also chocobos running about for you to run into and presumably lasso into submission; keeping later to force to breed in the quest for 100 chicobos. And that is your lot. The towns are the exact same in each region, with the only differences being some being corridors and some having side-streets. Some have quests but few to none are worthwhile. FFXIII's towns had more life, and that had no towns. There is a 'RTS' mini-game where you get to kick robots with chocobos until your troops take over bases (unfortunately not as fun as it reads), but describing it as strategic is a stretch. Tacked-on is much more fitting. There *IS* an airship, and shooting other ships down as they make the exact same death cry is as close to fun as Type-0 ever gets. But here is the thing: it is optional and so well hidden the trophies relating to it have the lowest percentages in the game. You need to kill level 44 enemies to get it, even if you find it, which requires either easy difficulty and/or abusing secret training (gain exp when not playing) to over-level. It is NG+ content. So, basically, 95% of players will never know of or use an airship, when the main selling point of this game for fans in the know is the world map. Just think about that for a moment, for the sake of my sanity. Not that there is anything to see or do when you have an airship: it just avoids the many joys of riding on a chocobo for five consecutive minutes and allows you to shoot things. There is a level 99 tower you can fly to, but that can go take a running jump. No. Just no.

And now we get to the combat. A good real-time battle system with depth it most certainly is not. I have already detailed how the camera goes crazy when locked-on, and the lock-on system requiring you to hold the R1 button was a source of early annoyance until the discovery of a setting that enabled me to not have to hold it to lock-on. WHY NOT JUST HAVE THAT SETTING ON TO BEGIN WITH!? The combat comes down to this: you either use a melee, mid-range or long-range character. Two AI party members join you; happy to suicide against any and every high-level enemy. Each character has four attacks, with every character having their own unique skills and style; ranging from a samurai to an archer. But what it basically comes down to is these three types and magic, which you will most likely never use since it costs so much MP to cast and it is easier / faster just to beat everything silly with your weapons, before draining their souls (no, really!). After set attacks, enemies have a red target appear - signifying a 'killsight' chance - and you can then one-shot them during a very short window of opportunity. Or, an orange 'breaksight' for massive damage. The end. That is all the depth the battle system has to offer, aside from summoning summons to control for 1-2min periods, at the cost of a character's life. You will be blindly rolling as the screen blurs to avoid damage whilst staying locked-on (you can only get killsights when locked-on) or just mashing / holding your way to victory. And, by the way: the game does not tell you how much experience you get (a tiny amount, no doubt; not even worth displaying and better just to let the moggle boost you), nor can you check what skills do or change anything on the fly--only at save points. I eventually worked out that holding attack auto-attacks and is often better than just pressing the button for certain characters. A total guesswork micromanagement cluster is an apt summary. Rarely fun but never rewarding.

Also: you are meant to die against nearly all of the bosses towards the end. They are level 50, 65, 99, etc. NG+ victories only. So, no skill is required: you die and you win. It begs the philosophical question: can a loss truly be a win?.... The second battle against the flying Macross transforming mecha boss is a different matter altogether, though. For that, my eye candy summon saviour Shiva came to the rescue. She always came with a nice view of her most tasteful rear-end and was the cause of my victory in a few of the expert trials.

ALL of this typing and I have yet to get to the worst part of the game: the final chapter. An endless platinum trophy 'WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!?' endurance marathon. I am not kidding here when I say that, in-between the penultimate and final chapter, a BRIEF still-image montage plays that helpfully informed me the apocalypse had occurred and the end was nigh. The world was in chaos, Steve Blum had put on his EVIL "muhahahaha" voice, complete with choice 1D villain narration, and off I went to some sort of anime gone wrong quasi-physical temple of tedious trials that refused to end. Now, the game was an unfinished type of bad before that point where wars ended off-screen, scenes seemed missing and I never had a reason to care or understand 'L'cie' and 'Agito' (I understood 'L'cie' only due to FFXIII), or give a toss about any characters other than the **** anti-social whip and scythe girls that excited me greatly. There was a war, summons of mass destruction, and many robots/dragons died. It was uninspiring and consisted of terrible story-telling / no actual story, but at least it was semi-comprehensible: war; people die; school girls; rolling pantsu. But there are no words to describe the abrupt charge into nonsensical lala land it ended with. I can not even describe it. It was a form of mental torture equivalent to my balls being placed in a vice and it getting tighter and tighter. By the point I reached the final level 99 boss and he one-shot my characters, before they revived, became invincible and won via the power of love, my mouth was open in a awe. Yakuza 4's 40-minute "keyodai" scenes had a similar effect on me, for sure, but never before have I seen story-telling so hopelessly borked before. It is almost like the writers were trying to be unconventional and create a new form of art that makes sense the less of a grasp on reality one has.

In summary, this is one of the worst games I have completed. Ever. When I was busy using a turret on an airship to kill dragons, only then did it hit me what the series has become: everything and nothing. Only platinum trophy obsession kept me playing it as I attempted to grow to like it. Instead, I just frowned more. Holding the attack button as the screen becomes a blurry haze has a certain chaotic charm to it, as does timing attacks to one-shot kill. The music is mostly very good, also... although over-the-top / out of place on mission days at school and distracting. But the world is so lifeless and the story / characters so painfully inept that it undermines even the primitive fun of fighting palette swaps of the same enemies... or just outright the same enemies, over and over. The missions can last for 40+ minutes each, and all but chapter 5 (and the hell that was ch8) were so uninspired they had you just run through the same corridors and fight the same enemies. And when you are not experiencing the joys of battle tedium, you are running around a grand total of ten or so screens at school in an attempt to waste both in-game and real-time. Even if the story made SLIGHTY more sense in NG+, who in their right mind would go through something like this again!? NO to the NG+ expert trials, NO to the game and NO to Square Enix. They just CAN NOT create a decent story anymore. Or even a single relatable character. I am done with them. No more. Rather than sell FFXV's button holding fujoshi bait to me, it has made me even more wary of the series.

A core theme Type-0 beat me over the head with repeatedly was how its characters had the memories of those that died automatically erased. It is a pity breaking my disc would not result in removal of Type-0's existence from my brain. Instead, I will be trading it in to Amazon as soon as possible. And I wager many others will be doing the same in the coming weeks.

Note to self: when you hear a man that has put on comical Japanese, Russian, Spanish AND Australian accents using his evil voice in the trailer, STAY AWAY. Lesson learned.

Note #2: My equally pleased Type-0 co-playing comrade, Fabio, inspired my title choice. My inspiration for the review itself, however, was purely an affection for walls of text.

Technically the game is clearly outdated and they didn't make a lot of efforts to offer a true PS4 version, except the main characters, everything looks flat and unrefined. At least the game is not buggy but it's still a disappointment after all those years they could have at least make it look like a PS3 title.

Concerning the gameplay: the fighting system is pretty close to what we will encounter in Final Fantasy XV, with a clear orientation for the action (where old Final Fantasy XV were turn based), if you're not an hardcore fan that refuse any change, this system works perfectly and all the fights are more alive while containing enough personalisation to truly qualify as a RPG in the same time. The game was clearly design for mobile players with fairly short sessions in mind, it's not the best for PS4 but I won't blame the game for that.

The story is a classic war story from Japan, with magical resources and all that. It's pretty well written with some twists. On the other hand the characters are very cliché and like the XIII saga you'll want to slap every one of them for being so stupidly naive and the voice-over are also pretty bad and won't help you to create any link with them. The side quests are pure fetch quest and only completionist will have the patience to do them. To finish the main game you'll need around 25 hours which is a fair length.

In conclusion Type-0 is a nice action J-RPG but with outdated graphics, despicable characters and side quests with 0 interest make this title advisable only for those who are craving for RPGs, if it's not your favourite genre you can skip it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, let me be up front. I enjoyed the game, and my criticisms will be mainly in the form of complaints. To get the "good stuff" out of the way up front. The combat is pretty cool, and overall I found the game's overarching story (until chapter 8) to be pretty refreshing.

    My objections:
    - The controls seem like they are a bit clunky at times.
    - The combat is fresh, but the locations are EXTREMELY repetitive. There's essentially about 10 "different" types of "field" that you're going to fight in. By the time you are about 3 hours in you've seen the vast majority of them
    - There are more fights in this game that end in you dying automatically than basically the ENTIRE FF franchise put together. I understand that it's to make the player feel powerless, but it happens with SUCH frequency in this game that most boss battles just feel pointless.
    - The characters are pretty awful. For these 'all-powerful' characters, their personalities are all pretty rubbish. Seven is pretty alright, but the others are barely tolerable in any quantity.
    - The last chapter / ending make virtually no sense, come completely out of nowhere, and aren't fleshed out well at all.
    - SPOILER (minor): The final battle is impossible to lose as far as I can tell.
    - Gear progression throughout the game is sporadic, semi-random, and generally confusing.
    - Leveling is slow unless you cheat
    - Grinding SPP is REALLLLLY slow and unreliable unless you cheat.

    My compliments:
The game itself deals a lot with death, often violent death. It doesn't shy away from that, which is nice.
It's cool to see final fantasy do a "war" that actually FEELS like a war.

    The ugly:
-The PS4 version lacks multiplayer, whereas the PSP had it. Removing features for next-gen, I just can't help but dock points for it.
-The combat is broken up into areas, which is fine, but each of these areas is REALLY small, so you are constantly loading, which is annoying, if it pre-loaded (which should be entirely possible with a machine as powerful as the PS4 compared to the PSP) this wouldn't be an issue.
-There's no real minigames at all.
    -The ending is complete trash

    My verdict:
Pick it up, but if you haven't already done so, wait for this one to drop in price. By the end of the year this will be down at LEAST $30 from where it is now if you're buying used.

FFT-0 was released in 2011 as a PSP game that stunned people with great graphics and a darker, fresher direction for the series as a whole. The team as Square Enix has brought this wonderful entry to the series up with enhanced visuals and not too much else.
To begin with the most glaring change, the graphics. From the PSP to the larger consoles and TV screens, the game has scaled nicely. The character models are great looking and move somewhat fluidly. That's not to say there isn't some clunky or oddball movements from characters. The other glaring fault here is the facial graphics of each character. Whether it be in remastered CGI cut scenes or gameplay there are some jerkiness issues and shading issues here. Sometimes I caught a glimpse of triangular shading on a character's face from the cheek bone area down. Nothing major, but it's still something that flaws the experience. Other things such as clothing, monsters, Chocobo's, and etc are heavily, heavily detailed. They seem to lack the shading issues over all. My only other gripe is that during any and all cut scenes the characters' mouths don't match the voice overs for either the English or Japanese dialogue. The characters flap their mouths without any sound at some points.
Gameplay-wise the game is rather solid, but very, very confusing at times. Somethings aren't explained well at all such as Killing Sight and Break Sight. There isn't any formal introduction to each of the playable characters to give insight into their skills, abilities, or weapons. It's a game of trial and error. You may go headlong into a mission only to discover that some, like the Katana-wielding Jack, can't attack a whole heck of a lot. The game does suggest the "best" team for each mission by highlighting them in yellow/gold. During missions and in battle, there is a hell of a lot to focus on at once. HP, MP, enemies, harvesting souls from downed enemies, and general chaos. It also doesn't help that the targeting system and camera go wild on occasion.
For the story... Well, the same as above. A lot to focus on and a lot of questions that are thrown at you right away. There is a lot of info popping up quickly and most of the finer details aren't explained, but instead they are written down in the school's library for you to read later.
The music is rather good. I'm not sure if that got a bump in quality too, but everything comes through crystal clear. My only complaint in this area is that the VO for both languages are... Off in a way. Both Japanese and English have the typical girly-girl voices, brooding dark dude, typical action hero, and voice of reason that we as gamers have come to know, expect, and hopefully love by now.

Overall, Final Fantasy Type-0 HD isn't a bad game. It lacks some polish here and there, but it's a great way for Square Enix to test the waters of the PS4/Xbox1 before the release of FFXV (which is included as a playable demo).
    Short list:
    Pros:
    -Quick game play
    -Great visuals
    -Great music

    Cons
-Confusing... Well... Everything is a bit confusing
-Typical voice acting for both languages
-Some model flaws/shading flaws/random mouth flapping

Aside from the fact that it should have been ported to the Vita rather than the PS4, it does give the mainstream a different type of FF to play. Soundtrack is great, controls are not too bad, and the learning curve doesn't feel to terribly steep for new players. All in all I would consider this to be a FF appetizer until FFXV comes out.

I see a alot of people complain that having 14 main protagonists was 'too much' and made the characters not stand out or lack-luster, but in truth those people probably only played like 20 hours of the game max. The characters are all incredibly unique, memorable and down right awesome if you take the time to play it and I find class-0 to be one of my favourite cast of characters from any final fantasy (and i've played nearly all of them). Anyone who says otherwise probably didn't bother taking the time to speak, interact or learn more about class-0 in the 'free time' that you get around the school and I would encourage those people to go play call of duty instead. RPG's do require some kind of effort on the players behalf to learn about the characters and engage in the story. This is particularly very very true of type-0 as this is definitly not a game you can smash through because if you play only the main storyline you will NOT get the full experiance. You will come away knowing next to nothing about the game, the characters or the story as you can skip a great portion of it.

Unfortunately this is how most people seem to approach games these days and skip as much as they can. You may want to call this a 'flaw' with the game, that it doesn't 'force' you into playing a good 70% of the game. I personally see it as catering to a generation of low attention span kids who don't want to get caught up too long or invest much time into one game because some other juicy £50 title is screaming for there one weekend of attention.

In fact I was looking forward to an FF game with that style combat.

Sadly that desire for the game was crushed when I finally got my hands on it. The combat system is horrible. I can't say anything positive about it. It is not intuitive in the least. I've heard many describe it getting better later in the game as you progress but with a game that is designed around it's combat this is unacceptable. The combat should be fun and flowing, yet it is clunky and the targeting is a mess. I spend more time focusing on combat than enjoying any other aspects of the game.

I've put it down and gone back to it many times to approach it with a fresh look and frame of mind but with the same results. I could see this being a great game for the PSP - it's short comings could be explained away their. Maybe it should have ported to VITA instead.

I'll be watching someone LP this rather than suffering through the combat system so I can at least enjoy the story because that looks to be quite interesting.

The HD port is pretty lame... the main characters look pretty good but everyone else looks like low-poly PSP models. They also added a heavy motion blur effect that is quite disorienting. Now for the game itself: I hate nearly everything about this game. There were so many good ideas in the game but they were so poorly implemented that it is all just bad.

The storyline is the usual FFXIII style gibberish, like you started on book 3 of a 5 book series. It has an interesting plot, nations at war over crystals using magic and machine to battle each other in brutal fashion - I like the mature content. However, they explain so little that it is hard to get immersed in the world.

We finally see the return of an overworld right from the start but you do not get to explore it. Invisible walls stop you from exploring further areas until they are slowly introduced to you throughout the game which makes the overworld almost pointless.

The main characters in the game are the least interesting of any Final Fantasy game. You are given all 14 kids right off the start with no introduction to any of them. They all have numbers or card terms for names and most of them look pretty similar and are all rather forgettable. Many hours into the game they all still feel like strangers because they hardly have any input during the storyline. The only way you will learn about their personalities, weak as they are, is to read about them in their profiles.

The battle system is probably the strongest part of the game and actually seems pretty good off the start. However, after a while you begin to see how terrible the AI is, for both enemies and allies. The camera is terrible, especially when using lock-on as it will often get stuck on cave walls or be so low to the ground that your view is obstructed by tall grass or even your character. There is a good variety of spells and abilities to choose from but you can only have two equipped to each character at a time and cannot change them except at a save point or shop. Again a potentially good part of the game is ruined by needless limitations.

Now one of the worst parts of the game, the replayability. The side missions are actually meant to be played on subsequent playthroughs as they are vastly higher level than the story missions and require significant grinding to be able to complete the first time through. The story also implies that you will be able to do things differently the next time through and that is true, you gain access to alternate missions, but they have zero impact on the story until the very end of the game. Even the ending is an interesting idea wrapped in convolution and nonsense and since the game is so lazy about giving the player any real information about the lore of the world the events of the end will likely mean nothing to the player.

If done well almost every part of this game could have been great but instead this feels like a jumbled heap of garbage that has been a constant disappointment to a life-long Final Fantasy fan.

This is a lazy port of a hollow shell of a Final Fantasy game.

Final Fantasy Type-0 is possibly the worst Final Fantasy game I have ever played. And I've played pretty much all of them.

Keep in mind I've only play for about an hour and it's almost more than I could stomach. I'm trying really hard to enjoy the game but every time I do the game seems to go out of it's way to make me hate it. Let's start with the camera. I understand it's a port

Keep in mind I've only play for about an hour and it's almost more than I could stomach. I'm trying really hard to enjoy the game but every time I do the game seems to go out of it's way to make me hate it.

Let's start with the camera. I understand it's a port from a PSP game but the camera shouldn't FIGHT the player. You'll constantly find yourself fighting against what the camera wants to do because it's generally what you DON'T want it to do even more than you'll be fighting enemies.

Next the voice acting. They pretty much hired the second worst voice actors in the business to voice every character. I say second worst because I have heard worse. But not by much.

Every single character in the game gets on my nerves. So far it's the largest cast of thoroughly unlikeable party members I have ever seen in a Final Fantasy game. Sure there's always that one or two characters in the game I don't like (though I grew to like Vanille and Rikku in their respective games). But out of the 14 party members the only two that don't make me want to punch them in the face every time they're on screen is Ace and Eight. And that's probably only because aside from the opening Ace hasn't been on screen again. And Eight has had one of the best voice actors so far despite all he's said is "I'm busy punching things." When asked what he was doing over the COMM. COMM is an acronym for something, by the way, don't ask me what it stands for because I don't remember. (The terrible personality and voice acting also applies to the NPCs, by the way.)

Which brings me to the next point. The game literally BOMBARDS you with the world right off the start instead of gradually introducing you to it like other Final Fantasy games. This just results in information overload that left me with not knowing what the hell was going on.

The game is also awful at explaining anything about the gameplay. At one point it's trying to teach you about which button uses your spell and which one your special ability. But instead of actually telling you what button is which it literally just says "The corresponding button". Presumably because you can remap them later. But during a tutorial you should probably at least try to point out which is which. It also does an awful job explaining what Special Orders are or how the Support system works or why party members are highlighted gold on the party select screen. I had to check gamefaqs for the answer. I shouldn't have to check gamefaqs for something the game should be explaining itself.

Combat is also a pain. Mostly because the target select doesn't work. For targetting enemies it works fine. But the game also tells you you can tilt the right stick down and select targets on the ground like fallen objects or dead enemies. That way you can extract their Phantoma and do damage to the enemies around them. Except that doesn't work. I've tried every combination of the right stick and the lock on button and it just refuses to do it.

Character models look great. They actually look better than the ones in the cutscenes. And leagues better than every NPC since they look straight out of the PS2 era. And not the late cycle PS2 era.

I understand that Type 0 was SquareEnix trying to do something extremely different from the usual Final Fantasy formula. But if you're going to do that at least make sure it works at a fundamental level and also put in a tutorial that's going to actually teach the gamer about all these new features you're trying to implement. Or at least bother to print out an instruction manual. The game already feels like a throwback to the late 90s/early 2000's.

I don't understand the people saying "the soundtrack is great". The battle music is great. All the music I've encountered outside of the missions is god awful with the exception of the classic Final Fantasy music it will play while wandering the school and the world map music which is basically the chocobo theme. Though it's kind of odd since you aren't riding a chocobo.

The Final Fantasy 15 demo that comes with it only serves to highlight all of Type 0's faults. And it doesn't help that they have the same kind of action combat. Except the Final Fantasy 15 demo DOES IT RIGHT. The camera doesn't fight with you. The characters are voiced well (not great) and are actually likeable for the most part.

In conclusion, the Final Fantasy 15 demo is the only thing justifying this pile of crap's price tag. As a port it should be priced at $40 or less like every other port of a NEWER game that's come out on the PS4. I would maybe buy this game for $20. $30 at most. I can understand why SquareEnix would package it with the Final Fantasy 15 demo. It wouldn't sell enough by itself to actually be profitable and for good reason.

I would have to disagree. I give all three entries in XIII a better score than this. My main problem with this game has nothing to do with the port -- I've never been a big fan of how many characters are in your party and how fast they enter, without any establishment of personal stories or backgrounds. It's a problem of 'too many cooks'. One of my favorite aspects of RPGs is the deep, entrenching story and compelling and complex character establishment. This game severely lacks the latter. For the first 10+ hours, over half the team probably hasn't been in your party yet, and you may have heard 1-2 lines from most of them. Honestly, it's hard to get connected to any of the characters because of that. Fifteen playable characters is just wayyyy too many, even for a FF game. So that already was a problem for me -- however, the port introduced some new issues. First of all, the cutscenes are anything but seamless. I understand it's a port, but the 15 seconds of blank loading screens in between every 5-10 seconds of cutscene sometimes leaves something to be desired. They really could have worked on just sewing some of the scenes together a little better, given they're now on XBONE/PS4. It would have given the story a better flow than the original offered. Lastly, porting to a new console generation gave them the opportunity to make the interface a little more clear, and they just plain failed to do that. We're not on a five-inch screen anymore, so there's no reason for the big, blocky, messy interface it has. It's honestly an eyesore.

Now, that's what I DON'T like. I'm not saying I hate this game. I love the story, the combat system is the best so far aside from XII, and the graphics are beautiful (they really did a great job with that). I'm just saying that over the years I've come to always expect great from Square Enix, and they have never truly disappointed -- more often than not, they actually exceed my expectations. This is, I would have to say, the first final fantasy game I have ever played that I was truly disappointed by. Not gravely disappointed, but disappointed nonetheless. And the main reason I'm a bit upset about it is BECAUSE it's Square Enix, and I know that if they wanted to, they could have easily done better (they always do). I do feel it's the first time they've lowered the bar for themselves, and I am sad about that.

I'm not saying you shouldn't play this game, either. You should. It's a great game. I'm just saying that it's really not what I was expecting, and it doesn't quite live up to the reputation of its developer.

I think this game is receiving way too much flak and allot of ruthless critical judgments. Here are my two cents:
    - Game play is awesome! Battles are unforgiving and require strategy. There are allot of different cool looking characters with there own style you choose from. Battlers are just addictive and has me looking forward to the next one.

    - Story is pretty cool to be honest. It reminds me of a Final Fantasy VIII gritty reboot. You technically got Galbadia army, Balamb Gardent, SeeD operatives. I think its awesome.

    - Graphics are good. For it being a HD remastering of a PSP game. They look nice. With just lack of some ambient lighting and some scenes being original PSP graphics. I really do not see this being an issue for anyone who is a fan of Final Fantasy.

-There is an overworld AND Airships! No linear crap. This is probably the closest to a true final fantasy we have had since FF9 or 10.

These are reasons why I like the game and think that if anybody is an old school fan of Final Fantasy owe it to themselves to give Type-0 some play time. You probably won't regret it. Wait for it be cheaper if you must. This is something that we thought would not come to America yet it has. Lets welcome it with open arms.

The graphics are definitely not HD, and yes i understand its originally for a handheld but where did they make improvements worthy for it to be on a PS4 and not a PS2? 3. The battling is really chaotic with you being unable to strategize, unlike the old turn-based FF games. Your squad mates go and do what they want, getting themselves killed or getting in your way as you try to adjust your screen (using the horrible migraine-giving mechanics). What was so bad about turn-based FF and the strategizing that came with it? 4. The storyline is pretty cheap. Overall I think that is what happens when Square Enix (CHINA) is put in charge of fixing up a game for the PS4. Disgraceful.
Now for the good stuff... There are a lot of characters to choose from, which is pretty cool, the opening scene was pretty nice, but that's basically all the positive feedback I have to give.
If you want to spend money on a FF game, do not go for the FFT-0 "HD". It's a waste of 60+ dollars that could be spent on a far more superior game. At most buy it, beat it, return it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had to write a review for this game, which i have never done before, because it was so awful.

    Story: 0/10
It begins with world war 2, seriously, the bad guys are even wearing nazi uniforms and look german. They drop a nuke and wipe out an entire nation, with literally no motivation whatsoever, set out to conquer the rest of the world, and guess what, nobody in the entire story even mentions the massive genocide they commit again save one guy from that place, and no one even seems to be angry about it.
Your characters are all students at a fighting university whom absolutely nothing fascinating ever happens to. The characters are all 2-dimensional and play out their schoolchild drama based on their unchanging stereotypes through some extremely poorly edited (and written) dialogue.
You defend from the germans, and set out to disable their forces, then you're interrupted by another nation calling a peace talk. Their leader gets killed and its blamed on you, so the other nation allies with the germans to fight you. You never find out who killed their leader, and no one ever investigates it. Instead you conquer the known world, and then for no reason, some kind of prophecy (the fulfilling of which includes a sentence 'when nine and nine meet nine' which makes no sense and is never explained) that was mentioned only in the opening video brings about some kind of apocalypse, and for no reason, the german bad guy is the ultimate bad guy.... cause he was the first person at the last dungeon, literally, that is the reason you get for it. Not only is the last dungeon an annoying and time consuming joke, but so is the last boss, you literally can't lose. You're somehow saved by the most confusing and frustrated member of your team. Oh yeah, and there's this weird thing that they keep going over where you lose your memory of anyone that's died because of the crystal, which simply isn't well thought out and the characters have entirely too much dialogue relating to something it is assumed that they grew up with. Oh and don't expect much of an ending, the ending cinema is of your characters talking in their classroom, that's it, well done.

    Graphics: 8/10
    good stuff

    Music: 6/10
    i miss Nobuo Uematsu

    Gameplay: 0/10
You simply can't start a game with 14 characters with unique fighting styles and skill trees with unique attack combo's that you have to go into menus to begin to attempt to remember, that are so disposable they die at the drop of a hat and cannot be revived unless by some miracle you managed to find phoenix downs (which are extremely rare, i got 5, all at once, during the entire game) and equip them before battle, and think its ok to waste them. In fact you cannot change your characters unless one of them dies. You can't equip anything on the field except for a single item for your whole party, you can't learn new techniques in the field UNLESS you find a save crystal, and when you do, there's nothing that tells you beforehand whether it's a static ability or an equipped ability. You can only equip ONE spell and ONE ability on each character and then one defensive spell, which you can't use to target other teammates. There's also no AI settings. There's basically no incentive for exploration because your home base is the same place the entire game, and it becomes incredibly annoying to go through the same rooms over and over again looking for new quests and trying to complete them before they all vanish when your next assignment pops up. You can go into other towns once you conquer them, but movement around the world map is slow and annoying, the map itself is far too big and open and blocky and devoid of anything interesting except giant monsters that will chase you and kill you, because there's NO WAY TO RUN FROM BATTLE. The towns have like one screen, and none of them sell you any good equipment or weapons, but they sell you gifts, which have absolutely no purpose that i was able to find. Some people will give you quests and have quest markers over their heads, some people will give you quests but dont have markers, so what was the point of making markers? Oh yeah, and some missions are done in a weird conquest style manner where you have to help good units approach enemy cities by directing the units and helping to fight enemy units yourself. The only problem is that for the most part you have almost no control of where your units are going until it doesn't matter anymore, it seems like a very poorly thought out, eternal tutorial minigame.

All in all, this game is absolutely the single worst game i have played by squaresoft. It's got the worst, most unexplained, most un-involved story line of any game ive ever played ever, and the game mechanics we're less than poorly thought out. And i want to mention that i LOVE final fantasy, i even loved FFXIII-2 and 3, (not 13-1 though, that game was far too linear

FF Type-0 is a really great game, the only negative thing I can say against it is the visuals. The playable characters look great, and Akademia too, but the support characters and the other maps/places are not so much. But this doesn't detract anything from the whole.
If you are listening what the characters have to say, the cut-scenes and the side quests, and read the Crystarium you get a very good and strong story behind the game.
The change in the battle system is the best thing what could happen with Final Fantasy. It's so intense and fun to use this system and there is even a little strategy behind it with the break/killsight system.
I've never had so much fun while farming to level up myself.
Right now, you coudn't really get better JRPG for PS4/XO right now, so if you are a JRPG fan, or just a japanese game fan, pick it up because it's worth every cent. There is around 45 hours of content for the first playthrough, and then there is the second playthrough what is basically a must do in this game because of the story and the different cut-scenes. Hell, it's so much fun, you will probably play it through the third time on Agito difficulty to get everything and max out your characters. There is easily 100+ hours content in this game.
This game is easily in my top Final Fantasy game list.
And after that, there is the FF XV sneak-peak which is just a bonus.

The voice acting is also probably the worst to be found in any Final Fantasy game. The graphics are the weakest point of the game, with weird character models changing all the time (the main characters are in CG in some scenes that shine in comparison to the rest of the characters), low quality textures that keep shining bright and a very bad camera that spins so fast it blurs everything. It's definitely a cash in, a rushed port. Regardless, if you are looking for a fun and enjoyable game and don't mind the shallow characters and poorly presented, boring story, this is the game for you. The gameplay is very enjoyable. Expand

    Pros
+Unique and dark themed storyline compared to the rest of the series
+A lot of unique characters which can be seen as inspirations from history, anime, etc
+A lot of replay value and the ability to replay missions in different difficulties
+Fantastic and memorable soundtrack with a lot of new tracks and remixes of old Final fantasy songs
+A lot of side quests with different varieties ranging from killing monsters, obtaining items and accomplishing certain tasks
+A lot of post game type content that allows you to view storyline information, enemy bestiary, cutscenes and other information
+The game plays through different types of genres such as FPS (in certain situations) , the usual RPG mechanics for the series and RTS elements for some field battles
+The HD remaster includes an additional secret cutscene not seen in the PSP version
+Visuals have improved from the PSP version

    Cons
-Characters have weird animation or poorly designed animation during cutscenes compared to other dubbed FF games
-Although the game is on PS4, it is a HD remaster and it seems like it could easily be run on a PS3. Visuals look improved from the PSP version but it still looks dated and like a PS2 game in some aspects
-Motion blur is used more than it should be
-The game actually has you depending on grinding at times before you are able to continue otherwise you would have a lot of difficulty especially when keeping up levels for 14 characters
-There's only a handful of missions and even then they are divided into different types of gameplay (between RTS and actual RPG elements) which can make grinding a bit difficult to choose from
-The magic system is kind of useless especially the upgrading part
-Summon system is limited similar to FF12 and FF13 and not like the older FF games
-Some of the cutscenes, items, weapons and summons cannot be obtained in one playthrough so you would have to play the game multiple times

-The combat is tight, responsive, and always interesting.
-The story is sort of a mix of final fantasy eight meets valkyria chronicles; It seems familiar with it's own spin on the Fabula Nova Crystalis mythos. It's also a darker story that can occasionally make you feel genuinely bad about what you've done.
-The additional missions are fun though exceedingly challenging the first time around
-Music is quite good, especially around the end game
    -Dr. Arecia is the ****

    Bad things?
-The camera and auto-lock during battle isn't great and at times makes it hard to see
-While the story is interesting, it's sometimes hard to follow with a frequent "what the crap just happened"? Unlike most other FF games, you'll need to actually speak with the people walking around because they have a lot the information regarding the story OR you can consult the rubicus/history which provides more inforamtion. Otherwise, the cut scenes don't provide all of the information.
-Leveling a over a dozen characters can be tedious.

True, it's not a visual masterpiece, but many of great game aren't always visually stunning.

And, no, you do not need a guide to play this game. This games requires you to read a lot and search out objectives. To me, the formula is perfect. I grew up playing video games before they even had dialogue audio. I had to read everything to understand what was going on. Gaming felt lazier, but cooler, when I had to just listen to the story told to me. The gameplay is great. Contrary to some reviewers, you can cure in the middle of combat. True, you cannot revive fallen comrades in battle, but you can use a Phoenix Down as soon a she battle ends. And all your teammates are revived as soon as you enter a town or start a new mission. And with seventeen characters, there's no need to revive in combat, you can effectively switch them out.

The camera can be a little tricky, but so as long as you maintain a lock on your target you don't have to worry about missing.

Visually it does show that that this game started life as a handheld title. The HD update works in some areas but for the most part it doesn't look like a current gen release however this doesn't take away from the over all experience. The graphics are still adequate enough that they don't lessen your enjoyment and the updated soundtrack also fits brilliantly.
The story is a bit confusing but you'll get a loose grip on what's going on in your first playthrough. The details become more apparent the second time around which does seem like a flawed way to tell a story but for me I enjoyed the game enough to warrant a second playthrough anyway.
As much as I like this game; I do feel it would be more at home on the PS Vita. If I had to guess I'd say the only reason it was released on PS4 was so that Square Enix could shoehorn in the FFXV demo. It may be fun to play but it was originally a handheld game and this does shine through. But despite this I am happy with what we have and it's great to see it released outside of Japan.
I would highly recommend it to any JRPG fan.
Although I should point out it does share a proble with FFXIII-2: a moogle with a mind numbingly irritating voice. Usually the moogle is giving you useful information but I always find I'm too distracted by my desire to tear out its vocl chords to really pay attention.

The biggest problem with the game isn't even in it's identity, but rather the limitations it's original console had in the PSP. T-0 HD is not the normal FF game, as it is more gritty and less colorful than previous titles. The game's story revolves around war, and how it is the young who die in war, not those who have the power to wage it, and the feelings of this are radiated in the fact that the supporting cast outside of the 14 playable characters dwindle down little by little as the game goes on. Gameplay holds a basic 3 attack, 1 defensive ability locked to the four button layout. A nice add on is the killshot, which is a split second that occurs where a red circle appears. If damage is done during this split second, then the target dies, regardless of whether it's an opponent or a boss. The limitations of course are the biggest problems with the game. The game doesn't look good. sure it looks amazing for a PSP port, but as a PS4 game it is not where the status quo would be. Cutscenes show its PSP origins as the simplest movements require a fade to black shot to reset everyone. The game itself is not bad, but the biggest thing that works against it is the fact that if the game was remade as a PS4 title, it would easily be one of the best titles on the console, maybe even the cosole generation. It is truly different then any other console FF besides tactics. Fighting is fast, quick, and requires skill and planning while motivating you to master it. Story is not told overly well (yet) but so far it is a very dark story for a FF. The theme is War.

I will not mention graphics like other morons, as I know better then to expect a game that was on PSP to be remastered on PS4 looking like Uncharted 4. The character models are very nice. Everything else screams PSP. But if you are here to enjoy a wonderful GAME, then graphics should not hinder your decision.

If you were disappointed in the last 4 FF games, feel relieved that this game is actually good. :)

The only thing that is slightly annoying - in the beginning - is the camera which is a bit wonky, but after some hours of gaming you get used to it. The thing I like the most is that, while being in the Academy, you have to think over which events/actions you want to go for - cause all of them cost a set amount of hours (very similar to how it is in Persona).

The lip dubbing in this game was the worst thing I have ever seen, but it's easy to joke about how bad it is and move forward. The story of the game also bothered me a bit. The story was moving along nicely and I thought it was really good until the last two chapters. In chapter 8 the game introduces a new enemy threat way out of left field that had not been mentioned what-so-ever in the game the last two chapters were like playing a completely different game story wise. The final boss was also just terrible, the boss battle lasted a very long time considering when you fight the final battle your characters cannot die you literally cannot lose the final battle which really goes far away from what Final Fantasy is. Usually they give you the hardest battle ever to finish the game so that left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. All in all the game was fun, and challenging but there were just a few things that made me believe that the game was not worth 60 dollars. Expand

This is my first Final Fantasy game and I decided to jump in with the transition into action-based combat, and the fighting in this game is amazing, it's fast paced and all of the characters play differently and uniquely so you will definitely get a favourite to play with. The missions (when playing on Officer difficulty) are very tense and difficult when you are trying not to die since it is very easy to. I didn't mind having random fights in the over-world since fight in was such a joy. However the other element of gameplay kind-of falls apart, you have a time limit and you have to do tasks in that time limit such as going to the over-world and kill some enemies, but everytime you go into the over-world or talk to special people it takes up time so a layer of strategy is added to the game, however later on, I didn't know what to do in this time and I just kept on running around endlessly, good thing you can still start the story mission at any time.

The graphics are the worst feature of this game because it looks dreadful, they range for mostly PS2 to the main character models looking like early PS3 graphics so I wonder why this wasn't on last gen as well as current gen, that would have made so much more sense.

I must admit, I haven't played through the whole story and I am 20 hours in however your play though may be a bit quicker since I was trying to get trophies. But I thing the same gameplay concept will be shown throughout the story. The story is compelling and very interesting but I won't talk about it for spoilers sake.

Overall it is good but it isn't great. I definitely wouldn't pay full price for it however it comes to around £30 it would be great. However the main reason people bought this game was so they could get to the Final Fantasy 15 demo so that's a reason you may think they put no time into it but they did put some time into it but not enough in the right places.

The story line, for me, is one of the biggest factors of a game, and is sometimes more important than game play itself which is why I, controversially, highly rate FFXIII which many people don't. The story line of this game was really good - captivating and addictive, but by no means the best FF.

Overall, I definitely recommend it, but I wouldn't pay for a new copy. The £28 I spent on my copy I would say is an accurate representation of its worth. Enjoy!

This a great and well-implemented system that makes FF Type-0 HD very enjoyable.

The graphics are great for a PSP remaster but some cut scenes still retain the old graphics and characters other than the main cast of 13 are in PSP era graphics.

The main story is good but not great though

Soundtrack is stellar, its very fitting to the story and situation.

However, it isn't a flawless game. As mention before, only the main cast get a total remake while environments and NPCs merely get a HD re texture which can makes some scene look jarring when our main characters interact with the NPCs. The game also shows off some interesting concepts but were not fully fleshed out.

To sum it up, if you are a JRPG fan, then Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is a great game to buy, if not its a great Final Fantasy to start with.

I'm always skeptical with games that market a wide range of main characters, I find the often result is a very bland underdeveloped group of individuals and this unfortunately did fall into that trap, you really didn't get much substance to the characters other then a very touching cut scene towards the end of the game that I did enjoy but wished there were more of.

Battle System: 8/10 The battle system is fun because of two reasons. It doesn't rely just on button mashing and the fact that you can control 14 characters allows for it to not feel too repetitive. The flaws are that you can't actively swap out reserve characters and when you have to grind to level up (which you'll have to do several times) it can get boring because leveling 14 characters is a slow process. I'm also not a big fan of the support player system because while you can get SP it limits your leveling of your party which limits your desire to use it.

Characters: 8.5/10 The game does a surprisingly good job fleshing out the majority of the characters (which is surprising since you have 14 party members). The interplay of the characters is interesting to watch and it drives you to talk to all of them during your time between missions. On the other hand none of the characters jump out as being a main character which is nice because it makes the game feel like it has an ensemble cast but it also doesn't make any particular party member memorable.

Graphics: 7/10 They're certainly not great by ps4 standards but seeing as it's a PSP to ps4 port that's too be expected. That being said the game isn't ugly and in my opinion the graphics don't detract from the overall game play.

Soundtrack: 7.5/10 It's good but nothing special. It's kind of weak for a final fantasy game but the songs suite the locations well.

Side Quests/Bonus Material: 10/10 The new game + is excellent. It offers new story missions, you can finally tackle the "expert trials" and it opens up new areas. This gives the game great replay value and it allows for side quests that actually add to the story which is nice. Also the little cutscenes that you get to see during the time off and the drive to make you talk to NPCs is refreshing.

Story: 8/10 The war part of the story is very good (all but the last chapter) and it's formatted in a way that it feels like your party is really changing the direction of the war. The problem with the game is that in the last chapter it makes a (rather abrupt) switch to having a more traditional final fantasy, let's fight the big bad guy trying to destroy the world type of story and the transition is not good. The final chapter's story is interesting enough that it's in no way bad it's just that the story deserves a good transition from a war story to the final chapter. This being said replaying the game makes reveals facts that make the ending more smooth but you shouldn't have to play a new game + to understand the transition.

Misc: The replay value is high as I mentioned above which is nice. Having a world map brings back classic Final Fantasy memories which I personally really enjoyed. The war battle system was fun and broke up the game nicely but could have been done better.

    Overall 8/10

Quiet a huge disappointment to the series of final fantasy in terms of storyline. The characters were allright although the setting is quiet boring. It has unique ideas, intense moments, show how violent, cruel and messy real conflicts get, has a charming cast which can also be really annoying for others to be fair and a story that positively surprised me (go into spoiler free details below for the story as much can be missed). This was a PlayStation Portable game that I missed. Luckily it was ported to the PS4 and I bought it as I heard a lot of praise. It is set in the world of Orience. There 4 great counties exist. Each has an elemental crystal that help them flourish (The elemental crystal are an old staple of earlier Final Fantasy games). Strangely all elemental crystals started to become weaker which is a serious problem and can lead to harsh conflicts as they are immensely dependent on them. The world has some unique quirks. When people die they are forgotten by others so no one has to mourn about the loss. This is well developed and addressed in the story. For example the dog tags soldier use for identification were stored at the base when they depart to know who was lost and you see people only remember their loved once from pictures writings and similar things. Also the usual FF summons require the sacrifice of the summoners life in exchange for this power. The story focused on the conflict that is started by the weakening of the crystals. It features the students of class 0 (no typo) who will be thrown into the events. Those are special as they are trained by a character they call mother. They are far better than regular humans, have unique skills and knowledge and a top of that are always revived by mother after missions (No consequences aka memory loss). The story is intense, there are a lot of twist, plots and clashing philosophies. It is one of the best in Final Fantasy. Clarification: Not everything is accessible in the first playthrough and it will look a bit generic on the surface. But when you have the full knowledge via NG+ it is an amazing story. To be a bit more specific: I will completely disagree who is the villain and true hero of the story with those who do not know the additional twists and full story. Also it is the only game which can explain why NG+ exists ;-). I like that they show the cruelty and losses of the war instead of glorification (By the way not gory!) and you see the gray areas of all sides. There is often no true black and white even if it seems so. Gameplay wise it is slightly like the Persona games as action RPG. You have missions and free time in between. For the missions you chose up to all 14 characters of class 0 and fight your way to the missions. Each character is different. Some have ranged attacks, some slower but more damaging weapons etc. You have to adapt your play style as I was nearly helpless with a character I never chose before. You party consist of 3 active members were you control one and the AI the other two while the rest is the back up. Action RPG like you attack enemies, evade attacks, use items, magic and abilities (As remark: Leveling up has seemingly a bigger effect. I noticed that the level must somehow be included in the damage system). It has however more than most as there are a lot of additional mechanics like weather influence, collecting Phantoma, Breaksigths / Killsigths, summons, SSP points, squad commands, SO and more. As per RPG standards there is hidden stuff, side quest, trials, events mini games like strategy battles or Chocobo farming. You will never ever do everything in one play through. As sidenote a cheap trick: There is a mechanic to train one character while you are not playing the game. Bigger rewards for longer times. You can manipulate it by setting the system time up to the next day for huge results (but this gets weaker and weaker the higher your level is). Now to the other part of the game. In your free time you can do side quests, mini games, restock, explore the world map or school classes. You have only a limited amount of time available as participating in classes or leaving the city cost a fixed amount of time. Beware that you can only have a limited amount of side quests active and most need you to go to the world map (= free time lost). I liked this system as I am a fan of the Persona games but it is not without weaknesses. Presentation wise it looks good for a PSP game port. The soundtrack is never a complain in a FF game. My negatives were: The mission levels. I was once 20 levels above the recommendation and still encountered an above my power level enemy. Happen also in another mission with a far superior (optional) enemy out of nowhere. I disliked that I cant do everything in one playthrough by limiting how many side quest I can have active. The leveling up gets really slow after a certain point and it fells like a chore. Overall it is a remarkably good spin off. It has its strengths but is not for everyone. I like the game play, characters deep story and how the twist changed everything. Expand

One of my biggest pains was that certain character have play styles you are forced to adopt that made me want to whip my controller at the wall. "Reflex?" really who thought this was fun? Normally I don't mind long cut scenes when they develop the story, the problem with this story is that it had almost nothing to do with the characters you play. You could have taken any 14 random character and thrown them in this story and it wouldn't have made a difference. I made it to chapter 5 and by that point I was skipping cut-scenes, rushing from area to area just to make an effort to MAKE IT END. But I ran out of patients... As a big FF fan i found myself unable to finish this one... it doesn't really feel like a real FF anyway so I guess I don't feel too bad I mean with a name like Type-0 I guess I should have expected something more like X-2 or even the dreaded XIII.

    "Final Fantasy Type-0 HD Review"

    (Introduction)

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is the next generation release of Final Fantasy Type-0 for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One. Originally a PSP exclusive title, the game was announced as Final Fantasy Agito. The game along with Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII (now Final Fantasy XV) was meant to be a part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology that Square Enix has adopted for their more recent Final Fantasy titles. Since its announcement, the game like Final Fantasy Versus changed names from Agito to Type-0 and was released exclusively in Japan in 2011.

Last year in June, the HD version of the game was announced during E3, exclusively for next generation consoles. A few months ago last year in late September, the game (in its first print copies only) was revealed to come packaged with a demo for Final Fantasy XV titled Episode Duscae.

Regarding Type-0, I was of the few fortunate enough to play the original version of the game, three times in fact in its entirety. Besides 7, I would argue that Type-0 is probably my favorite entry because of what it does differently. The game also successfully brings back the core open world design with a large cast of characters and a bottled but intriguing story riddled with nostalgic elements that made this particular series popular.

    (Presentation)

Type-0 has a fantastic presentation. First of all, the game right off the bat has a much darker tone to it compared to other games in the franchise. The very first scene of the game, which involves a boy and his chocobo grabs your attention immediately. The only other final fantasy games that pulled me in from the get-go would be 6 and 7. The opening scene also does a great job of introducing the player to this grim and desolate world that Type-0's story takes place in. The game's presentation successfully establishes that this is a game that's going to have very dark moments and that it won't compromise on its themes by cutting away or around the brutality of its content like in previous entries.

Also to note, the game does have a much lighter side but this isn't represented in the game's opening sequence.

    (Story)

The story while decent, is told somewhat strangely. In a nutshell, Type-0 does encourage the player to take advantage of the new game plus feature to fully grasp the different events and their chronology in relationship with one another in the game. The problem with this is that, Type-0 like many other games forces the player to play much longer than what should be necessary and dig up research in order to fully comprehend the narrative as a whole which is annoying to say the least.

While its great to encourage replayability, it should never come at the cost of undermining the story. However, the story at the end of the day while quite convoluted and at times overwhelming, is a rather interesting tale, it's quite unique for a series such as Final Fantasy.

Simply put, this game is all about war, its world is very bleak and the game makes it clear that no one, young or old, is safe from the conflict. This brings me to the characters and factions. In the game, within the world of Orience, there are four conflicting nations. In the game you represent one of those factions, Rubrum, as the renown student members of Class 0 which hail from a magic academy called Academia. Originally, in Class 0 there are 12 characters, Ace, Queen, Nine, Deuce, Cater, Cinque, Seven, King, Jack, Sice, Trey, and Eight. At the beginning of the game, two more students join Class 0 as its final members, those are Rem and Machina. This brings the game to a total 14 playable characters. While this could create for some strong interconnected story telling between the members of Class 0, it unfortunately falls flat in most aspects.

With the exception of Rem and Machina, the characters of Class 0 are are left mostly in the background as cut outs that are meant to serve the game's overall narrative structure of the war. Still, that's not to say that each member isn't given his/her moment to shine onscreen both in game and in cutscene. Also, aside from few specific voices which were miss cast, the English voice work is rather done well here. Hearing Ace and Seven's English dub was really satisfying for me considering they were my two favorite characters to play as in the original version of Type-0.

Each member of Class 0 has his/her own unique personality and it is also a plus that the game is evenly mixed between both playable male and female characters. The main antagonist of the game is reoccurring Final Fantasy character Cid. In this particular entry, he's a commander representing The Milites Empire. The art of the character designs and world is rather interesting to me because it feels more grounded in comparison to other Final Fantasy titles.

Also, the dialogue primarily in the English localization can be extremely cheesy to the point where the writing just comes off as goofy and not in a good way. The game really does suffer from this problem which placed me at odds of what's to become of XV's dialogue, until I played the demo of course.

Overall, the story of Type-0 is interesting but it's not communicated to the player in the best way and character development suffers greatly due to the lack of focus on members of Class 0 who truly seem to be only important in game and not as equally important in cutscene. This will undoubtedly divide some players as the end result.

    (Graphics)

I wish that there wasn't much to say regarding the graphics. I'm not huge on graphics, for obvious reasons but for an HD port of what originally was a handheld game, this is well done but its not nearly the best Square could have achieved. There are some next gen elements to this port but they are very few, far, and in between. Aside from some great lighting, the fact is that graphically, Type-0 HD simply doesn't stand up to other next gen titles and that's okay, somewhat. In comparison to other PSP titles, the game in its original incarnation looked great but with the HD release, everything has been bumped up exponentially. The characters of Class 0 appear much larger on screen and they have been up-scaled in their hair, and clothing although expressions and mannerisms have unfortunately stayed the same.

The biggest flaw with the graphics is that, while the majority of Class 0 themselves look great, everyone around them look as if they were ripped straight from the PSP original. In that regards, the graphics are very disappointing because its not just the character models that suffer from this problem either but I'll get to that.

Environments have been completely overhauled with intricate details that were not present/seen in great detail from the original version of the game. Colorful magic effects explode on screen with great lighting and the weather effects such as rain are much more impressive here than they were before. There's somewhat of a blur effect that has been added when the camera is rotated but it never becomes disorienting. To some however, the effect may come across as distracting. Overall the game in its graphical aesthetics is ten times better than what was available on the PSP period. The cut-scenes however like the NPCs haven't been up-scaled and Square has opted to retain the original PSP cinematics which is very strange and unacceptable for a next gen port. Also to add to the fire, it doesn't help that the lip synching doesn't match up with the English voice work which makes the character models appear as marionette's with out of sync sound from time to time.

All in all the graphics while bumped up, remain inconsistent constantly from the moment you start the game, to the moment you put it down after each session. As long as you don't unrealistically go into the game expecting the graphical fidelity of games like Infamous Second Son or The Order 1886, then you won't be disappointed.

    (Gameplay)

This is not a traditional turn based Final Fantasy but rather this is an action RPG game. As a result the combat system is very hands on. You move your character around freely, you're not confined to a battle menu. You can't block attacks but you can easily evade for defensive maneuvers. Each character has a limited number of actions available but the combat is very satisfying as it does require the management of three party teams, equipment, stocking of healing and magic restoration items, and the use of every character at one point or another in the game. You can switch characters on the fly while your A.I partners are left to make their own decisions, for better or worse.

Bear in mind, Type-0 is a very challenging game depending on the difficulty you're playing on. Enemies can be very brutal and your team and reserves will be wiped out in an instant depending on the situation and your skill level. The end of the game, without spoilers is especially challenging and will test your skills on more than just basic combat. The best part about the game's combat is the fact that each member of Class 0 specializes with a certain type of weapon and combat style. For example, Ace uses magical cards and as a long ranged character, he can attack from a distance and place traps within the environment among other actions. Deuce on the other hand is a mid-long ranged character who can heal the party rapidly and shield them with a buffed defense from a great distance away. While this may seem overwhelming, each character does have his/her own strengths and weaknesses and each character only has so many actions available.

With 14 playable characters whose actions behave and react differently from each other, this creates more of a strategic element as to whom you should form as a party throughout the game's 8 chapters, side quests, and combat exercises. There are other elements in the game that one would expect out of a Final Fantasy game such as riding chocobos, visiting towns/interacting with NPCs, piloting an airship, and calling upon summons in battle which are fully controllable in this game. Other aspects like the handy fast travel system, special items such as growth eggs, and select but essential elements of magic all make the game more accessible. In other words, this is still very much a Final Fantasy game at its core.

The leveling system is a much appreciated simple number based system unlike past systems such as the cumbersome sphere grid in FF X and the pricey crystarium in FF XIII. Although the biggest con of the game for me is the fact that characters outside your party do not level up when they are not engaged in combat which essentially makes grinding much longer than it needs to be. This in turn makes the game more repetitive in nature and it can extensively raise the overall time of a single play-through. On a good note, save points in the game are frequent and they are the only times in which you can upgrade, equip, and manage the reserves list of every member in Class 0 as well as save and load any game save that you have available. On an initial play-through, with much grinding it took me 40 hours to finish the game without diving much into the side quests. You can speed through the game much faster than that however if you focus on leveling just a few characters, something I preferred not to do. On subsequent play-throughs via new game plus, you can play through each mission in the game again, this time with a second path available to play in which more cut-scenes can be unlocked and you retain all your items and experience in the process. Strategically taking advantage of the Kill-sight and the Break-sight mechanics can best even the hardest of foes and gathering Phantoma from the fallen can be used to upgrade your magic abilities which is extremely important for ease of combat. Like more challenging games such as Dark Souls, Type-0 baits you as the player into exploiting enemies when they are most vulnerable to achieve the best outcome in battle. There are many enemies which can kill your characters in one or two hits, even at full health. This is where evading, healing items, and party management becomes crucial in surviving throughout the game especially in the last chapter. Also to note, I really dislike the management menu considering, gameplay doesn't stop when you're using it. Multitasking isn't something that people know how to do. It's very distracting but it is possible to use it effectively with some time. At its core, with all these elements and more, the gameplay in Type-0 HD isn't linear but rather its varied and focused. It presents an action combat system that's rewarding and fulfilling all the while retaining elements expected of not only an RPG title but as a Final Fantasy title as well. The game succeeds in presenting elements that one would expect in a game from the franchise. (Music) The music in Final Fantasy Type-0 feels very much exclusive to it which is fitting being it is a spinoff title to the series. It doesn't sound like anything that could fit another Final Fantasy title. In short, its a great soundtrack. As a fan of the music in the other Final Fantasy games, I'd say it does compete on some level with some of the more classic Final Fantasy titles but in a way that's more constrained. The Final Fantasy X soundtrack had a way of repeating its themes in various tracks. The Type-0 soundtrack does the same thing and it does so in a very good way. The music never feels repetitive and the reoccurring themes are welcomed and well presented throughout the game. There are many tracks in the game totaling well over 50 songs which span across three discs. The one's that shine the brightest though include, “We Have Come” (What Becomes of Us) (Type-0 main theme), “Three Hours that Changed the World” (Three Hours of Fate), “Servant of the Crystal” (Apostles of the Crystal), “Choosing How to Die”, “Crystal Guide Us” (Final Fantasy main theme), “Time of Tranquility” (Peaceful Times), “Erased Memories”, and “Machina Kunagiri” from the first disc. From the second disc, the strongest tracks are “Show of Power”, “Rem Tokimiya”, “The Earth Under Our Feet” (overworld theme), “Chocobo!”, “War: Recapture” (Battle The Strategy for Recapture), “War: The White Weapon” (brilliant use of guitar), “War: That Which Lurks (Battle Something Lurking), and “War: Howl of the Dreadnought” (awesome boss music). Lastly, the third disc with its best tracks include, “War: Pursuit” (Battle The Chase), “War: The Quiet Bloodbath (Long)” (Battle Peaceful Fighting/Long Version), “Tempus Finis” (“The Time of Finis”), “Vermillion Fire” (The Fires of Suzaku) (final boss music), and “Type Zero” (Type-0). I'm not going to go into which ones are my favorites but if I had to choose just one, “Tempus Finis” which is used heavily throughout the final chapter of the game is easily the strongest track in the game because of its subtlety. Without a doubt, it is what I'll remember the most about Type-0's music. However, the entire soundtrack overall is great. As someone who owns the soundtrack digitally, I strongly recommend checking out the soundtrack separately from the game for anyone who enjoys good music. (Enjoyment and Verdict) It's no secret that I greatly enjoyed Final Fantasy Type-0 and the HD English localization of the game is truly a wish granted from Square Enix considering for a while, it seemed the game would never have a legal release outside of Japan. Now with regards to the many people who only bought/will buy the game for the Final Fantasy XV demo, I strongly recommend that you keep and play Type-0. The fact of the matter is, Type-0 isn't just one of the best Final Fantasy titles in recent memory, its arguably one of the best titles in the series because of what it does differently in its gameplay and tone. The game successfully combines the elements of what makes a Final Fantasy game and intertwines them in interesting and inventive ways while at the same time, it provides a new kind of gameplay experience to both new and especially old fans of the series. In short, this is very much worth full price, with or without the FFXV demo. At this point, I'm very much interested in looking forward to what becomes of Type-1 as it won't likely be restricted as a handheld port like its predecessor. (The Pros) Nostalgic Elements from past Final Fantasy games are present A darker unrestricted tone blends well with the overall arching narrative about war and death The ARPG combat is strategic, rewarding, fast, and at times chaotic Every character of Class 0 is distinct in their personalities and combat abilities Graphics are a major improvement over the PSP original Summons are fully controllable The story while scattered is interesting and unique for the series Open world elements are well implemented and exploration while limited is encouraged A basic numerical leveling system makes a return in a good way New game plus creates immense re-playability as well as achievement/trophy support The music is very well done and is presented well without becoming too repetitive English dub overall is quite good (The Cons) Characters outside your party do not level up if they are not used in combat There are points in the game where long range characters are a must and short range characters are rendered useless The story is scattered through multiple playthroughs to get the full picture of the narrative Level of necessary grinding is ridiculous English Voice Acting while rather good overall, truly misses terribly when it misses The “pause menu”/management menu is an extreme annoying distraction on screen Summons aren't available for use in the open world, they require the sacrifice of a character to use, variation between them is limited The dialogue is hit/miss Off lip synching with English dub NPCs and Cinematics have largely remained untouched graphically Ultimately, while I like the game, this “HD” release isn't all that HD and the English voice cast suffers here and there primarily with voices such as Jack's. This is why I give this release, 4 stars out of 5. (Final Fantasy XV Episode Duscae Demo) So that's my review of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, great game, great Final Fantasy game, and a good port. Now I will shed some light on the Final Fantasy XV Episode Duscae demo and Final Fantasy XV itself. As far as my notions of the demo go, in a nutshell, to say its great is an understatement. It's a well developed and well polished extended preview that offers a few good hours into a small part of the realism vs. fantasy world that FF XV will offer. In the demo, the Duscae region is very vast and extensive. There's quite a bit to discover and explore in the world. It's easily the biggest demo for a game that I've seen. Noctis and crew in their art direction and especially their animations are designed very well and the theme of brotherhood that XV will explore is definitely present here and is emphasized mostly to good taste. Animations of hi fives and arm bumps between Noctis and his buddies sets a tone that I've never seen in any other game between the player and their A.I partners. Whenever you're exploring, Prompto or Gladiolus or Ignis will occasionally provide some subtle dialogue which enhances their appearance on screen considering they're not playable. Whenever something on screen of interest is marked, the A.I will run over to it and Noctis's friends will try to get him to walk over to their location. You of course in those moments have to make the decision whether to join them or ignore them. It's clear that Square intended that you, the player are apart of the team despite the fact that you're not in the game with the four bros. It's very interesting to see that the A.I tries to get you, the player, involved in interacting with the environment. Speaking of which, between Noctis's warping ability, the stealth system, and the dungeons which are impressive, its obvious that quite a bit of thought went into this game regarding the level of interaction with the game's world. The camping system in which you level up is finely implemented. It blends well with the “Fantasy based on Reality” theme and it grants buffs for the entire party based on what Ignis cooks for you. Also, the system plays the victory fanfare theme when you do gain experience keeping that nostalgia alive for old fans. The day/night cycle is well done and actually serves a purpose in the game by adding additional challenge to the nighttime sections, and presence of the enemy A.I provides that sense of fulfillment when you're dishing out those quick combos or you're just wandering around the environment of Duscae. The monsters roam around freely and can engage Noctis and his group with seamless transition in and out of battle. The interesting thing is that not all the monsters are immediately hostile, some only become hostile once you attack them while others will freely attack Noctis and co. on sight. While the enemy A.I are not much of a threat on their own, when there's many of them on screen, the strategic elements flourish and battles become a spectacle. Not since games like Shadow of Mordor, Kingdom Hearts, and the Batman Arkham series have I had this much fun with an action combat system and having numerous A.I on screen makes the experience all the more engaging. As a comparison, the combat is not Devil May Cry, it's not Bayonetta, it's not God of War, it's certainly not Dynasty Warriors as the uninformed masses have compared this to. No, XV looks and plays very similar to Kingdom Hearts which clearly is what original director Tetsuya Nomura intended and the game is all the better for it. Noctis is very quick and precise with his strikes and the weapon customization system which also has leveling in it, allows for further depth to the system. On a side note, the phantom sword ability is one of the most impressive abilities I've ever seen in a video game. Visually its surreal and in game its extremely fulfilling to use. Seeing these weapons on screen protecting Noctis automatically and attacking enemies on their own without my individual input feels like they breathe a life of their own. As a huge fan of action games and ARPG games, the combat is very impressive and I'm anxious to see where these systems will be taken when the free second demo based on the overture demo footage for FF XV is released, I'm assuming later this year? Story-wise, the demo doesn't offer much but it is interesting seeing the characters interact with one another and having Cidney on screen, whenever she's present along with any NPCs available is a welcome addition. Quest-wise, for the main quest, it was great having an objective to hunt the enormous behemoth nicknamed Dead Eye. It makes me wonder what other quests/missions are going to be in the full game and how varied they're going to be. If they're anything like the side missions in Arkham City, where they actually have a story behind them, where they require the player to truly interact with the environment, and are not simple fetch quests then I'm all for learning more about them. Considering I'm not Japanese and I don't speak Japanese, I'd say that the English voice cast has been handled quite well. I'm very glad they gave Noctis a deep voice as I'd imagined he would have such a voice, even if it is a few tones too deep here and there. Prompto is energetic and very expressive as he should be and Gladiolus in his dub has an mellowed quality about him that's welcomed. Ignis, while I like his voice, does possess a very strong British accent at times. Cidney also has an accent, somewhat Australian? However, it doesn't come off as too potent. The thing I like the most about the dub is that, it's very distinguishable. You can tell easily who's who and it never comes off as try hard or forced. Nonetheless, the dialogue needs to be worked on but as a localized Square Enix title, it could be much worse than what I've heard before. All in all, while lacking some systems and content, specifically the magic system, the extended air combat, the car, the chocobo play, major town gameplay, mini-games, and the weather system, which are all absent/constrained in the demo, Episode Duscae is an amazing look into just one part of XV's large open world. It provides an exquisite taste of how the exploration will be handled, how the camping system works, how the weapon system is implemented as well as letting you play around with the stealth system, co-op attacks with the other members in your party, the summoning system, and simply roaming around the game's environment is very welcomed. Despite the fact that there is a level 99 cap in the demo, I don't want to keep myself spoiled in anticipation of the next demo plus there are other games to play. (Final Words) If you're on the fence about getting Type-0 HD, do not just buy this game solely for the FF XV demo. The fact is that Type-0 is truly a great Final Fantasy game and it deserves your attention just as much as FF XV. Plus Type-0 is the best FF to play in waiting for XV considering both games share similar ARPG style gameplay and both place an emphasis on open world play with a simple leveling system. Personally between this and Dead or Alive 5 Last Round, I'll be square until Batman Arkham Knight (my most anticipated game this year) comes out in two months. Good job Square Enix. Good job Tabata. Looking forward to more adventures with Noctis and crew hopefully next year.

Bad things first, there are quite a few areas you can visit in this world and unfortunately, quite a lot of them feel quite simple and restrained artistically speaking, for example the cities you liberate are basically all the same in a same country… (Other venues are good). I think the setting in final fantasies has always been excellent, very detailed, awesomely beautiful or well-made environments with captivating music etc. This one does not feel that great. The main characters are average; I like the fact that there are quite a few of them, but although the class as a whole is decent, they are not very charismatic, individually speaking (maybe it’s made a bit on purpose to stress the whole teamwork/class thing but…). Actually, some of the secondary characters have a lot more charisma and they’re more interesting (e.g. dr al-rashia). Good things!!, I think the story was quite good and that is important in a FF, it was unexpected as the story is not supported by strong characters. The type-0 universe is really interesting, captivating and quite awesome in general. If you take some time and read the lore you’ll find that the type-0 universe is very very interesting, one of the best in my opinion. Combat is quite dynamic and fast paced, maybe it’s not my favourite but it is good I think.

If you’re wondering, is it worth playing? I’d say yes, it is definitely, but I am pretty sure a lot of people will end up with the same feeling I ended up with. End of day, this is an average/decent game set in an awesome universe with and interesting story. There was potential for a very good thing here but they didn’t achieve it. I really hope square comes back to this world and does something with better characters and taking more time to design the cities and stuff. If they do, it could be absolutely epic, in the meantime give this one a try and treat it as an appetizer for hopefully a future better game set in this great universe.

Obviously it was not as in-depth as the other games in the main series, however the spin on it completely did it justice. Plus I love final fantasy no matter what, so take this for what it's worth. Thank you.

The short review is: If you like Final Fantasy 13 and are looking for a more action-oriented combat system, you'll probably like this.

When first starting game, I was a little surprised at how well the opening cinematic was done. It shows great care in the tragedy and death taking place, surrounding a particular soldier and his chocobo. It was a bit drawn-out, but was good. Unfortunately, the story goes downhill from there.

Shortly afterwards, we're introduced to our large number of protagonists who are immune to the magic-blocking effects that's causing the death/destruction in the area. They then proceed to repel the invading army single-handedly, because this is a teen power fantasy story, of course. Besides our protagonists being created, there's little reason given why they have their powers, so we must simply accept their super powers.

The protagonists aren't badly-written, but they are generic. Because of the large number of them, very little character building time is given for each. But if you're used to Anime/JRPG character stereotypes, these will fit into your existing preconceptions nicely.

The remainder of the story is dark for a Final Fantasy game, with plenty of death due to the seemingly pointless war happening. But whenever I took a step back and asked why this was all happening, I could come to no logical conclusion other than that's what the writers wanted. The character actions simply aren't believable when properly analyzed.

The major issue with this game (and Final Fantasy 13's) story is that it revolves around what appears to be gods that are influencing humans in the most cryptic ways possible, thus creating conflict. The gods are unfortunately not at all consistent, so things just happen randomly. These gods just seem to be a thin veil that the writers use to cover up their lack of good creative writing.

I'm not a fan of Square Enix's attempt to morph turn-based combat systems into bad action combat systems, and this game is a prime example of that. This one is more action-oriented than most, with no way to pause or slow the combat at all. You'll just have to deal with its fidgety targeting system, melee characters that hop around when attacking, and it's easily-disruptable, charge-based, and limited spell system. Sure, you can learn it and become great at it, but it's simply not good. I was able to cheese my way through most of it (without any level grinding) by waiting for the random targets to appear on enemies. If you just stand around and wait for them to appear, and then attack with a fast-attacking character, you'll do massive damage, possibly killing the enemy instantly. So being a full 20 or 30 levels below your opponents is no problem, as long as you don't get hit.

The game's skill trees are disappointing. They're more like small lists, full of skills that you'll never use. You can equip only two at a time, and your standard attack is much more useful in most situations.

The side content in the game is disappointing. You can spend your free non-mission time talking to people in your city or by monster grinding and doing fetch quests outside (in its horribly-presented overworld map). At first, I liked talking to people since I got a better sense of what the world was about. But it didn't take long before they ran out of interesting things to say, and instead started talking about events that I had already participating in (seemingly trying to validate the typical player's power fantasy).

And that's about it. After suffering through 13, 13-3 (13-2 was okay gameplay-wise), and 15, I'm done with these modern, pretentious, horribly-written, dumb-gamer-focused Final Fantasy games. As an old man, there's only so much of this I can take.

From the outset the "story" is a confusing and disastrous mess which never materializes; if you can even manage to sit through the PS2 quality graphics and listen to the horrific Japanese-translated dialogue you'll spend hours sorting through a political upheaval whose players are never clearly defined. For a totally unique game world never seen in a FF game, they act like you should already know about the "obvious" political strife. At any rate, graphics are horrendous, interim gameplay is essentially nonexistent, the mission system makes no sense, the time cycle makes no sense, the leveling system is terrible and the inventory system is somehow combined with the skill system and that, unsurprisingly, makes no sense. The ONLY saving grace is that combat is fast-paced and exciting, but that's only really true for about 6 of the 15 playable characters. One is a girl whose "power" is somehow damaging enemies by playing the flute, one katana-wielding dude walks at about 1/10 the speed of your other characters (and your enemies, more importantly) and many other characters' powers are hard to control. The interface for selecting your party is miserable, you can only change party members when one dies and the party members are hugely unbalanced in ability level which will make leveling them up evenly almost impossible. I genuinely tried to play the game for awhile to see if I would get a grip on it, but aside from the temporary joy of exciting combat with your one or two favorite players the game is a tremendous bore.

Being a huge fan of FF games I dove right into this one too. I played it to chapter 6 the first time, and dropped it from boredom. I played it a second time and got to chapter 3, and dropped it again from lack of interest. The story didn't drive me, the characters didn't drive me, and better yet not even the poor adorable moogles and chocobo farm could help this game from being a failure.Being a huge fan of FF games I dove right into this one too. Yes, the music is lovely...and let's not forget about those graphics, kids! I'll give this game props for its battle system, it was fresh and easy to control and to be honest it was the only thing keeping me in the game. The characters were hollow, and half of them I didn't even bother leveling. The story held no depth for me, it was the usual fantasy war story between nations...and somehow a group of teenagers with extraordinary abilities are the only few to save the world. Plenty of things could've made this game alot better for me, but sadly those things will never be.

Ok the intro fairly explained what was going on. So I wasn't confused who was who and what was what. Not the first time I have seen a story involving enhanced teen soldiers. Technically I could tell this was a hand held port quality by today's standards. Small environments and constant loads between tiny environments. The NPC look PS1 gen, but the playable characters look PS2 gen. SimpleOk the intro fairly explained what was going on. So I wasn't confused who was who and what was what. Then that awful mini map strategy mini game kicked in and I was totally out. By today's standard this probably would be a ok phone/tablet game, but for a console release nope not ok. Expand

Those hoping to see the franchise return to its legendary roots, or those (like me) who are just sick of the Final Fantasy XIII universe are likely to come away less impressed. It's nice that we've finally gotten the opportunity to play this game, but I'm not convinced it was worth the wait.

Not without its rough charm, but clearly the bridesmaid to FFXV's babe. [May 2015, p76]

Too technically flabby to be called vintage, but you'll find yourself immersed in a satisfyingly grim story with a varied cast of characters. [May 2015, p.86]
