If New Dawn is as mute and monotonous about the issues that led to the nuclear war and the philosophies that shape its vision of America, that’s because it’s only interested in serving up a gamified version of survival, logic be damned.

An over-familiar follow-up, perhaps, but New Dawn whittles away the rough edges of Far Cry 5 for something extremely enjoyable. [Eurogamer Recommended]

The end result is a game that I enjoyed but which also frustrated me greatly.

My biggest gripe lies in its lost potential. If Ubisoft had embraced the game’s fundamental silliness instead of cutting its narrative off at the knees by spackling over it with morality, I can only imagine what kind of truly Mad Max-esque shenanigans would have been possible. Its enemies and I are both the villains, but they’re allowed to be comfortable with their morbid, violent fun.

New dawn, old gameplay! Far Cry New Dawn is perfectly acceptable entertainment. If you liked Far Cry, and want more Far Cry, then New Dawn is more Far Cry. It pays lip service to its apocalyptic premise, but it's still got plenty of Far Cry for you to enjoy.

New Dawn is an overly familiar experience that, while a lot of fun, gets away from the best part of its predecessor without adding enough that really feels new. Even when the world ends, Far Cry stays the same.

Over 22 central story quests, and a clutch of side objectives, New Dawn is surprisingly good at throwing up varied tasks.

It’s a game that refuses to engage with itself mechanically, thematically, or narratively. As players, we’re left with two options: do the heavy lifting for a game that can’t and won’t, or once again embrace a hollow and half-hearted spectacle. Or we avoid it entirely, and let Far Cry 5’s nuclear winter linger a little longer in the hope that, when the skies clear, they’ll reveal a world that someone, somewhere, can bring themselves to care about.
