This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fallout 76 is a collection of contradictions.

On the one hand, even at the time of writing, it has some big bugs, on the other hand they pale in comparison to the fun of launching nukes and the multitude of events.
The story is an incredibly deep, tragic, complicated, meditation on technology and its relationship with humankind, yet it is ultimately a jigsaw puzzle composed by ghosts. It is an incredibly solemn, at times lonely, experience, but conversely it has the best community of people you could possibly play with.
All of this is to say that Fallout 76 doesn't work on the terms of a typical single player RPG, where choice results from the differing desires of NPCs. BGS has made them before, and there are numerous others on the market. It works because in between the quests and events, there is a collection of incredibly fun gameplay experiences. Fighting the Scorchbeast Queen with a server of strangers, uncovering the history of Appalachia leading up to Reclamation Day (Myst as written by Cormack McCarthy), helping new players build their CAMP, and of course launching nukes. The voice actors are phenomenal, perfectly setting the mood of the game. And the frequent updates have made the game better, with backpacks, events, and bug fixes. The new Nuclear Winter mode is another addictive addition, with high replayability. Highly recommended. Because of, not in spite of, the contradictions.

This game has made an absolute turnaround. I wouldn't normally put a rating on a game condition a year out, but wow has this turned around. NW is amazing, the game is very stable now, and the story and lore has been improved. Ignore the hate and honestly buy this game

It's not a perfect game, but there is a huge explorable world, and a constantly updating amount of content. The newly added Battle Royale mode is a blast! The lack of NPC's isnt bothersome, it really adds to the ambience of the freshly apocalyptic world.

This is a dark Fallout environment that promises to get more complex over time. The initial glitches are being sorted out, and yeah, the next lot of glitches will get sorted out too - I don't care about that, personally... I am grateful to be able to wander this Blasted Heath..
I feel 'more involved' in this Fallout world (than games before) playing as I do: The Sole Survivor...

I am a casual mature gamer and have been playing Fallout since Fallout 3. I really rated Fallout 3, Fallout 4 was good, Fallout 76 started off terribly and seemed sort of pre-release standard (Bethesda seem to do this all the time). Fallout 76 has had several updates and DLC added which have transformed the game for me, yes there are still a few bugs but now there are separate servers for PVE and PVP and another for the new Battle Royal aspect. As I am not unemployed or a student I find the missions and content enough to keep me busy within the game as a single PVE oriented player. I have enjoyed base building, farming, trading (via vending machines), getting and upgrading power armour, tackling the ghouls, scorched, mutants and many other creatures in the game. Some of my best experiences have been casually interacting with other players. I am not in a group or a clan and normally play alone, however the Fallout 76 community is very good; there are some idiots, spoiled little kids and dicks as in any on-line game but in general mostly everyone I have met has been friendly. My first interaction was whilst building a base as a level 10, a level 100 guy came to see what I was up to and gave me some tips and a really good weapon. Later another guy saw me selling junk at Morgan Town Station at level 20 and said if I helped him collect some items he would help me out as he liked helping new players. He showed me new areas on the map, made and gave me under armour, power armour and upgraded weapons and ammunition, that experience changed my play. I am now level 100+ with upgraded T51-b and X-01 power armour and can tackle a scorch-beast (though it's still better with a second player) , on a casual basis I give food, water, weapons and hopefully some help to newer players I meet as the community did this for me. Those previous experiences changed the game for me. There are voice comm's in game so you can interact and If there's an annoying kid, gang of dicks or total ass on the sever, server hop, there's plenty other servers but in my experience those sorts are few and far between. The Fallout community was, and is more than just the actual game. I for one am enjoying Fallout 76, the updates and DLC just add more for my enjoyment but I guess at the end of the day it boils down to what type of game/experience you were looking for. In my opinion if you want instant gratification and pay-to-win this is not the game for you. If you want to PVE with casual player interaction at your choosing then this is the game for you, with the added bonus of PVP and Battle Royal servers if you fancy a go at that. Expand

I really love this game. it seems simplistic at first glance but there is so much detail added to the world and the gameplay, I have to commend the designers.

I can't comment on PVP, but I play solo and in a team with friends. I have noticed any griefers and the community is helpful and friendly.

I understand there was complaints about the amount of content before the free Wastelanders release, but I can't fault it now. As a previous WoW and Guild Wars player, plus many other solo games, I'm enthralled with Fallout 76

The base-building aspect of the game adds a very pleasan't thrill to the entire experience. Also the Vendor machine mechanism of selling in-game items to other players for in-game currency, is also a brilliant idea. As a busy person, I appreciate the Atom shop which allows (for the most part) cosmetic improvements to be purchased for real money. The range and number of these items are a pleasant surprise

    Definitely recommended

They really need a way to check if people actually bought the game, before allowing them to post here.

The game is buggy, but it's not bad at all, it's not broken. It's incredibly fun, runs great, and is secure.

The foundation of the game is extremely solid and should be expanded upon with future content releases to reduce stagnation. Gameplay is really smooth and I haven't experienced a lot of lag.

There are some bugs and network issues that are pretty annoying. I've had my CAMP despawn into individual parts and even lost some expensive built pieces during the process. My fast travel point constantly puts me underwater. The lack of human NPCs seems like a huge oversight since there is evidence of people being almost everywhere. All the negatives don't make this a bad game though. It needs some more polish, some content to eventually come out as DLCs, and it would be perfect.

My experiences so far through ~2hrs of full game and ~10-12 of beta (mostly co-op with friends in beta) have been 95% good to great. Had one bad bug that kept from collecting loot/junk, but simply rebooting the game fixed it and hasn't happened since. So with close to 15 hours of gameplay I just hit lvl 15 before logging off this morning, and I've (iirc) only done the first ~2-3 mains story missions. Basically just been getting lost in the world and letting it take me where it may.

8/10 - Would recommend if you're into Fallout!

For now I will say that I'm *really* enjoying this game. I love the Fallout world and this game feels like Fallout. The world is amazing, beautiful to look at and varied in its locations. That, in itself, is a pleasure to a Fallout lover. I have played solo quite a bit and I enjoy that because I can take my time, fully explore and read the terminals and notes, listen to holo tapes etc. and I'm intrigued by the story which I have a growing sense of. It's also very fun to run around with friends and do quests, take on big enemies etc. There's some great additions to the enemies in the form of weird and wonderful creatures. The perk system is surprisingly deep which provides so many options in the kind of build you want to go for.
On the downsides, I *am* becoming frustrated with the inventory and stash limits which are manageable but just not fun to manage. THIS IS BEING INCREASED! Just read Bethesda's latest bulletin and am very happy about that. I also want to get deeper into base building, having been really into the settlement building in FO 4, but am going through a spell at the moment where my base has been removed every time I rejoin the game and my main building (which is blueprinted) is dismantled. Feeling a bit fed up about that but it may be something I'm doing wrong....I'm working on it and will report back. I should add that that's only just started happening, Prior to the last day or two either my base was where I left it or I could replace it perfectly without any problems. Performance wise I'm not experiencing the freezes and crashes that some people are reporting, It gets a bit laggy at times but that's about it. Neither have I experienced a lot of bugs. In fact in my experience it's running pretty well. I'm running a PS4 Pro & have good internet. (I'm also playing on PC and it runs smoother and the game looks even better on that). I'm really looking forward to where this game is going, and I have the strong sense that Bethesda will be continuing to improve on the teething problems and adding new content. Don't believe all the rubbish that's being spouted out there. Game wise it may not be for you, but everyone I gave a free code to so they could participate in the BETA (Bethes gave all who pre-ordered 3 free codes for friends and I had double - PS4 & PC) really enjoyed their time in the game and 100% came out feeling much more positive about the game than they had been prior. Several of them who told me they weren't interested prior to playing it have now bought it and are having a good time with the game. This is a good game with some things that need to be improved, and they are being improved. I'm happy with it.

I have played 50 hours of this game and I’m planning many more. Before I start I want to confirm I am a fan of fallout since fallout 2 before Bethesda owned the franchise. I’ve played hundreds of hours on fallout 3, NV and Fallout 4. This is not like those, this isn’t fallout 5. What this is, is an online spin on the franchise, an awkward experiment. I’m not big on PVP, I enjoy PVE and II have played 50 hours of this game and I’m planning many more. I’m not big on PVP, I enjoy PVE and I don’t get much out of MMO mechanics so having them absent in this game and a PVE focus suits me perfectly.

If like me, you’ve spent hours scouting the wastelands of past titles, looking for better gear, being drawn into locations and sidetracked by ever more tempting distractions this could be the game for you. It feels like playing fallout 4 but in a brand new large hand crafted location with new ideas and feel. The absence of NPC humans did at first cause me to miss them, the game felt initially a little soulless, but after playing for some time I feel I understand it better and the enjoyment has never let up. You are thrust into a large wasteland devoid of intelligent life, tracing the footsteps of the past, the days leading up to catastrophe, like a cartoon crow picking the bones of what used to be. The feel is something hinted st in previous fallouts but never fully focused on. I am not disputing people trashing this game, there are bugs and things that cause frustration and I have no doubt they will be fixed in time, but the game at its code I appreciate and enjoy.

The RPG elements are light but still present, customisation through swappable perks and upping your special stats each time you level, the biggest customisation is making use of what you find. Playing this game with a friend is great fun but it’s a polarising game, my friends don’t enjoy it as much as me and therefore are more frustrated by the bugs that exist but I enjoy this solo or with them and I believe this can be enjoyed in both ways equally.

With no hint of life beyond mindless mutants and abominations the story and quests are told though radio broadcasts, audio logs and journals found whilst rummaging and ransacking buildings and residences. The feel of heroic looter is refreshing and fun but expect a different experience to fallout 4, I actually play these games side by side depending on what o fancy and if my mates are online. Without the bugs and issues encountered I’d be rating this a 9 as a decent attempt at a PVE multiplayer fallout without just making an MMO ESO style online game with fallout theme.

Despite the bad press and obvious backlash, there is a good game here it just takes time to understand and perhaps a particular preference of the player to enjoy the elements they have focused on. I wanted to share my opinion in case there are players like me out there.

So utterly disappointing and flawed in every possible way… The first few hours, most of it can be ignored, and occasionally the flaws can be forgotten, but only briefly before they come storming back to the forefront. An awful, boring, empty, pointless experience. There is, however, a glimmer of hope. It's worth mentioning that there has already been a Bethesda title that was equally as unimpressive: The Elder Scrolls Online - but looking at it now, it has transformed into one of the best MMOs out there. There's always the hope the Fallout 76 develops the same way and becomes something special, but for now, that seems impossible. It's a world away from that.

Fallout 76 isn't your typical fallout experience. You don't have NPCs or dialogue, but instead get real players that should fill this void - that ultimately fails to do so. It does some things right, but as of now I cannot recommend getting this game as long as it stays a broken and boring mess that it is right now.

Fallout 76 is the series’ Freshman introduction into the world of online, multiplayer games. As a result, we are experiencing all of the awkwardness and clumsiness associated with that season of life. It is imperfect and a bit uncomfortable, but I see opportunity for Fallout 76 to be more than it presently it - to be a truly great, rich Fallout experience.
