Reluctant about the possibility of poor performance on the PS4 base system I just couldn't resist in the end and I'm glad I did pick it up anyway. The game for me is a brilliant piece of work. It plays like a SoulsBorne game and is relentless because you might just venture in areas you shouldn't ben at or there might be strong foes in easier areas where you didn't expect them. In the graphics department the 'legacy dungeons' feel more detailed than the open world but considering the PS4's old age it's no surprise. I'm 25 hours in so I've probably barely touched the surface yet this game is making me want to get back to the game... just a few more minutes just to realize a few hours have passed again; it's just so satisfying. Not all good news though, for me the major drawbacks are the crafting system which feels like a bad designed idea. 'Lets gather ingredients and craft items you just looted in the world during dark souls/bloodborne play throughs)', another issue for me is the side-quest tracking. You need a notebook to keep track of all that's going on. Expand

Honestly the best open world I've ever played. It's not a perfect game, but very few video games offer this kind of experience, so it's a 10 for me.

I wrote a 2200 characters review to be met with a 404 on submission and losing all I wrote.

I'll just sum it up. The 20-30 first hours in the game, it is pretty much a 10/10, which I'm guessing most of these review come from. But 70-80 in, anyone can see the flaw compound, and while its world building and graphics stay at a 10, the gameplay becomes obnoxious to say the least. I've

I've watched several streamers play the game and most of them seem to have their fun drop as the game goes and their only drive to finish the game is to satisfy their spectators. They are relieved when they finish the game but it is easy to see their bittersweetness regarding the game, not one of them reacted how anyone would react to a 9.6 rated game.

The game set itself high, and deserves most of the attention it gets, but a 10? not really. The first 20 hours I was "Wow, best game ever" too, but as you go on, it is more like "I wish I had more fun playing this".

I had super high expectations and even then, it managed to surpass them. I've played all of fromsoft games, they managed to create the game of the decade.

The sheer size of the world and its ability to show the player new things even hundreds of hours in is a monumental achievement. In fact the size might be a detriment to the game because in the last stretch the game does begin to crumble a bit. Some of the gameplay limitations also rear their head towards the end, where all roads and playstyles must be funneled into the late-game story content. Still, even with some flaws and scars Elden Ring feels at most times like the epic and monumental game it is trying to be.

Elden Ring is a well-polished open-world adventure. Much of it is customizable to player preferences. From character design to which way to explore first, and more. The weapons and armaments are many. The game encourages various builds in concert with fight styles, from melee, to range, to a mix.

The game is known for difficulty, yet—despite the tendency of some to confuse difficulty with excellence—it offers the player a couple different ways to succeed. The first is obviously to develop skill, and for many players, this means much trial and error, learning boss patterns, and eventually finding a rhythm by which to win. A second method includes some of the first but also includes levelling-up before returning to a difficult boss or area. This is a great option that make it open to a larger variety of skill levels without flipping an “easy” switch per se.

Much of the visuals, environments, and boss appearances are intricate and cinematic. Exploration is encouraged and rewarding, finding new places, new save points, new caves, new powerups, etc. The game does well to follow the 30-second rule of filling its world with enough intrigue to never really get boring. The exploration and variety of NPCs, quests, powerups, places, etc. is the strength of this game. The experience is largely driven by where the player wants to go, with a main questline available at all times.

Despite all the adventurous and customizable positives in this game, it is far from perfect, despite such reviews.

What makes many of the boss fights difficult is a “one hit kill” move. A player may often methodically maneuver through a fight for several minutes and then fall to an “instant kill” only to lose all that time and effort for what amounts to a “cheap” move that often can only be anticipated by trial and error. Sometimes, the blow might come so out of nowhere, you won’t even know why you died, such as with the second phase of the Radahn fight if you happened to have the camera in the wrong direction during a mid-fight breather. Most fights have minimal cerebral solutions. Many don’t feel like they beat you in an even fight. They only beat you because of a knockout punch, including ones that put you (or your horse) in stunlock to then finish you with additional follow-ups. At the end of the day, “pattern” based bosses with the “one-hit” are rather cheap designs. It’s almost an illusion of difficulty, where a fight seems somewhat fair and a good rumble until they get in the “cheap shot” and that’s often the only thing that consistenly makes them difficult.

Also, too many games, including Elden Ring, create difficulty in part by forbidding “cancellation” of a move. Part of the game’s challenge is anticipating your melee or magic “wind up” time and delivery. This can last up to several seconds. It leaves your character vulnerable if hit meanwhile. And you can’t cancel out of it if you, the player, actually sees the interruption in time and has the reflexes to cancel. The controller will actually be impotent until the animation is complete. This mechanic doesn’t feel natural, as a real person would be able to cancel their own punch.

Another feature in some boss fights that is poor is the bosses that have a second phase that is independent from the first phase’s HP meter. Unless you want to scout out a fight by watching spoiler videos, there is no way to know how much pacing of resources you want to use in a given fight because most of the time, the HP meter you see represents the opponent’s total HP, not some surprise new “refilled” HP bar from a second phase. Things like this just make gameplay aggravating and unfun.

There are many consumable items, like greases or crab meat, that can be crafted or purchased and used as buffs. These last for a period of time. However, if you are killed, these are lost forever. They are not like runes you can at least have a chance to recover after you are killed. It made 1-time use items overly precious. Your inventory doesn’t return to what it was before a fight or last save. And with so many of the fights being trial and error, it’s very easy to burn through many such items for naught. Few tutorials seem to utilize these, either. The game simply doesn’t encourage them because of it’s loyalty to difficulty and unforgiving gameplay.

As a side note, the game creates a fictional world of peculiar, amorality. It helps to be a spiritually knowledgable or careful person when playing the game. Because in Elden Ring, it seems the lines between good and evil are often quite blurred, to the point where NPCs ask strangely worded things like “will you serve the witch?” which in base reality would be clearly unwise to assuage. But the game seems to blur or alter the meaning of things like witches, blasphemy, and other spiritual terms, while yet insisting on borrowing from traditional spiritual language.

The Game is really good overall, but is not better than Bloodborne and even ds3 for me, and i Will say why, the positive stuff, the Gameplay is soo good, the system of the progretion is better than ever, now upgrade stars to level 60 is worth It, the bosses are solid and the best part, the open world, is huge with a lot of content, you can explore everywhere and find a lot of stuff, with a lot of dungeons, that, i Will say the negativo aspect about them, but and the the Game until you beat morgott ( this is why i put a spoiler alerta ) is 10/10, but, there is some problema, the layouts of the dungeons are, way, too repetitive, the bosses are soo reused, why there is more than 10 tree avatares ? Why is Nine night Calvary ? Why is more than ten dragons ? Why main bosses are reused as well ? And the worst part beggins now, the Game past leyndell, the Game is soo poorly balanced, i want a reason of why most of the enemies three ahora you even with 40 vigor, i mean, you can beat every dark souls Game with like 25 vigor, but in elden ring, 40 vigor feels like not enought, and, i don't like that you have toincrease a lot one stat or you are dead, and the bosses OMG, fire giant sucks, he have more HP than most of the ds1 bosses hp conbined, is boring and deals ridiculous damage, soo, you have to upgrade vigor enought levels to not get one shoted, the god skin duo is literally the worst Boss in the series, at least bed of chavos have a little bit of originallity and the design was unique to be fair, but this is a mesa that don't work as a gank duo, the bosses alone are really good, specially the apóstol, that is the best miniboss in the Game, maliketh is awfully balanced, is like, Well, he have not too much hp, soo, let's make that he can one shot easilly the player with attacks that let's you stunned forever, like why ? Is not even fair, and malenia, Who banave that ? Well, she have thes same problem than a lot of other bosses, she is really fast, but still hits like a giant, if not harder, and she can heals, lo attacks and more HP that the halingtree, Well, a lot of bosses also likes Dodge all of your attacks and start attacking like a machine with poor Windows to hit them, Dodge is not Well rewarded, but is true that your posicion matters more than ever, anyway, this is almost a perfect Game, but for some reason, they balance this Game like poop and the bosses are like bloodborne spped qhile you are inds3 speed, but besides of that is another amazing Game of frosoftware

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. as a first time player of soulslike games, this is by far one of the most addictive games i've played in the past few years, say for Doom Eternal.
the bosses are great, with the one exception being Melania, blade of gimmicky garbage.
the enemies are fantastic, say for every single type of dog.
and this is the first game in a while that actually encourages multiclassing, so i got to have a lot more fun with feeling out my build.
there are still a few issues with wonky fall damage, a few outright unfun bosses, and a few enemies or hazards that just can't be blocked or dodged, which is why it isn't a 10/10 for me, but it's still gotta be one of the best games i've experienced in a while.

Probably my favorite souls game. Love the updated graphics, mechanics, and open world. Still wish there was more diversity in the games, besides just killing enemies or wish the enemies didn't respawn. Or a different way of collecting souls/currency. I enjoyed the first 40 hours or so, but the game just felt too repetitive of a gameplay loop for such a huge game.

Beautiful world design, awesome battles, great character design. I only give it a 9 out of ten instead of the full 10 out of ten, because for a newbie like me, it doesn't tell me where to go or what to do after I've completed a boss or objective. Elden Ring is a truly great game and a definite contender for Game of the Year, and probably the favorite to win the award at this point in the year.

My biggest negative of the game is the change in music the game uses. In other From Soft games there is no music while you're exploring, just your footsteps and the sounds of monsters and combat, and then when the music kicks it, so does the dread and realization that you're about to get your butt kicked. The music in older games sticks out more because of this and becomes more memorable. Other negatives are slight balance issues, performance issues regarding frame rates (dying to due to frame rate drops in a boss fight can be quite frustrating), and hit box/hit registration; while hit boxes are in general better compared to older games, the open world aspect can lead to environments really messing up hit boxes and hit registration.

Despite these flaws, I'm giving this game a 10/10 due to everything it does so right and so well. The best boss designs in the game are absolute *chef's kiss* and jaw dropping. The environment diversity is gorgeous and original. There is a massive amount of weapons, spells, incantations, weapon arts, et cetera, and just so many ways to play the game with all the different items and such. There is so much fantastic content in this game; where certain game companies (*cough* Ubisoft *cough*), From Soft has filled this game with boss fight after boss fight after boss fight, and then all the weapons, armor, spells, etc. that I mentioned before. Aesthetic is what From Soft does best, and Elden Ring oozes style and creativity like an open wound oozes blood. The game is just beautiful.

While the game is not perfect, it is still an absolute masterpiece, and I cannot wait to put hundreds of more hours in as I create more characters, play new builds, and experience as much as possible. Git gud, and don't you dare go hollow!

I felt like the map could have been utilized more because I felt tricked into some boss fights only to get frustrated and lose runes. Not a big deal, just an annoyance. Especially the Roundtable place when it said I would not be combatting anyone only to find that in a certain area of the Roundtable (when you drop down), you are. I found that to be very irritating because there was also no way to back out of that area. But, the game as a whole is very well done and I do appreciate the work that went into it. The problem, in one word, is 'burnout'. More is not always more. And if you're like me, you want to see and do everything in every area before moving on, it starts to feel like it will never end. Loose ends and open loops quite literally give me acute anxiety.

With a game as massive and jam-packed as ER the feeling of busily trying to cover every inch of the map becomes overwhelmingly stressful. And it's not to say that fromsoft haven't gone balls out with this game. They def have. It's big, in-depth, connected and mostly awe-inspiring. It's just, well...too much. Especially for a semi functioning adult with other things in life to think about. You can have too much of a good thing.

So, it feels like this game is my life now until I complete it and honestly I dont think I want to even attempt another run. It takes so much effort and burden. The only thing that makes it tolerable now is how easy it is to summon helpers. When that eventually dies down and signs start to dry up there will be portions of the game that will be an even greater time sink.

Also, yes, I like exploration but so much of this is repetitive. Caves, ruins, rune towers, bosses, dragons, castle, caravans etc. In previous Fromsoft entries each area had unique flare and individually crafted, specific detail incorporated into it. There's that here too. But, the sheer size of this game is made of quite bland filler. I guess that's the trade-off. But for me I'd gave preferred something 30% tighter, more focussed and memorable than this never ending cycle of busy work unearthing things you may or may not use. It's exhausting.

Also, the NPC questlines are ridiculously obtuse. There's absolutely no way you could complete them without the use of guides and the internet. Fine. That's always been the case in DaS to some extent. But, these make no sense. The whole game is just so proud of the fact it leaves you to figure it out that it's actually silly. So much so I'm almost agreeing with the critics that say it's just needlessly hard. 129 hours of my run time could've been cut down by 50 hours of going online to search for answers. This game is not self-contained enough.

Lastly, I've had this feeling with two other big games in recent years 1. RDR2 2. BOTW. By the end of both these games I just wanted it to end. I'd had enough of collecting every last trinket to the point of drudgery. You might say "just do the main questline". Well, FOMO is a strong emotion in these kinds of games and one that is hard to fight when its intentionally utilised and when you've spent £50 on it.

There's so much to love about ER. It is stunning in places. So why do I feel like I'm burning out? It's just too much game. Too much quantity not enough quality. Less is more. Get rid of Torrent, pin back some of the scale, up some of the unique detail of repeated areas, tighten her up and we have a game that doesn't ask that you must cease all other things in your life to complete. Just wanted to add a somewhat crass analogy to sum it up. Have you ever been in bed with a girl you're really into, and it all feels exciting, sensuous, sensitive and horny, but at some point it just goes on that little too long and you're both carrying on to try to get back that earlier feeling, but by now youre only sinking more and more cost and energy into it, and the fun bit is now dwarfed by the effort bit, you're just covered in sweat and you start to forget the beautiful bit and question why you're still plugging away, but you still don't want to give up before you finish, but when you do it's not that romantic and beautiful? That's ER. I can't put it any other way. Apologies if that's too sexual but the shoe fits.

Can make my PS4 Pro sound like a jet airliner with the fans working overtime, but there's SO MUCH content, and it's done so well, and the game is so complete, and there's no MTX nonsense. Unfortunately, the Fire Giant boss is so poorly designed as a boss battle that it mars the whole experience. It's tedious and not fun in the slightest. It's like you're on this really fun road trip to somewhere cool, and then it comes screaming to a halt in a nasty crash, ending all the fun that could have been. Expand

Game starts off really strong. Like, the first 30-40 hours, depending on how much exploring you do, are the most incredible feeling. But by the time you're reaching the end of a normal Souls game, 50-60 hours, the cracks start to appear. I'm at 70 hours, I just got past the royal capital, and I'm beating bosses in 1 try with multiple healing items left over. Bosses I've never seen beforeGame starts off really strong. I'm at 70 hours, I just got past the royal capital, and I'm beating bosses in 1 try with multiple healing items left over. Bosses I've never seen before are doing LESS DAMAGE THAN NORMAL ENEMIES. This game feels like FromSoft inverted the damage, making bosses a joke and mooks a chore. I'm walking by hordes of foes chasing after me with everything they have because they take too long to kill, are too dangerous to engage, and at level 112 I know I can beat a boss in one try if I have all my flasks. It's not about the game being too easy or too hard, it's just plain unbalanced.

Strength builds can barely get a hit out without trading, which can lead to you taking 40% of your life to deal 10% of the boss' life. Dex builds deal 1/20th of the boss' life, and rarely have the opening to swing more than once because the bosses swing 20 times in a row, do an AoE body explosion, and then do another combo that lasts a half an hour. Magic builds are flat out OP, even more than usual because of the open world allowing them to find all their gear right from the start and then start steam rolling bosses with non-boss spells.

Elden Ring isn't a bad game, but FromSoft needs to do more than nerf play abilities to balance this game. The bosses need a second look, because I probably shouldn't beat Rahdan, Morgott, Astell, and Renalla in one try, but exploring the royal capital is like pulling my teeth out because of instant death curses in the sewers and knights stunlocking me with lightning damage in the streets. Balance.

To make matters worse, they have the same pattern with no variety at all. It is a constant flurry of combos and you have to wait until they're done attacking which gives you a small opening. It becomes a constant battle of attrition which is not fun at all and incredibly disappointing for From Software. The only saving grace is the world building is fantastic.

The battles bring nothing new to the table, you basically do the same thing you have been doing in every Souls game: roll and dodge the enemy's attack, roll at the wrong time and the enemy hits you, run to be at a safe distance from the enemy to be able to heal and approach the enemy once again and hit it a couple of times. Everything feels heavy and clunky and your hundreds of deaths feel somehow even more frustrating than in any Souls game. Sekiro's combat is way better, more dynamic, more visceral and more engaging. I was really hoping that Elden Ring would improve on Sekiro's combat and take it from there, but we just got the old and recycled Souls' stiff, clunky mechanics that, by now, feel stale. The rewards for killing the most tough bosses were useless most of the time: summons that I wouldn't bother trying, underwhelming talismans, average weapons that I didn't even bothered selling for their low price and other trinkets I couldn't care less about. The lore felt too vague for my taste. I know that's FS's style, but I was really expecting a big, revealing, plot-twisting ending, because my 100-hour journey was arduous and I thought I deserved a decent ending. No, the ending was short, vague and underwhelming, to the point I felt it was disrespectful. All is left for me now is hope that in From's next title, I can be immersed into a huge and beautiful world with a slightly more fathomable lore, an overwhelming, big, fulfilling ending and improved and innovative combat. The old FS's formula still might be appealing to die-hard fans, but I don't think it's going to survive much longer.

Similar to the rest of the Souls library, the game does share the same frustrating quirks like still getting hit through solid walls and the occasional bug or framerate drop (at least on last-gen platforms), but that's all outshined by the incredible presentation of the Lands Between, a place filled with so much mystery it's hard resisting the urge to discover and conquor everything there is to see. The first 25 hours of this game are the absolute peak of video-game. A cool gameplay, a new and diverse world to explore, new enemies, cool spells and weapons, cool side-bosses and stuff, nice cinematics and all.
Then, you continue playing and starts to realize that the game is so unbalanced that hurts. Enemies with too many health, exhausting and loooong combos that kill you with 2-3 moves and a very aggressive behavior, that dont give you a chance to initiate a combo. Really, many enemies in this game have 10000 of poise, and they simply dont feel your hits, then proceed to obliterate you with 2-3 hits, even if you have 43-50 in vitality, alongside the fact that seems that every enemy in this game has some magic ou spell in their moveset, making them almost perfect in combat. All enemies and bosses uses the same strategy, they trick you by fake or prolonging moves that would look very fast and some of them are really fast that you have like 0.3 second to evade or take a literal combo of 30 moves that f*cking kill you.
The world exploration is literally not worthy, you might find some SUPER OP secondary bosses that would give you not enough runes and a useless item. Plus, they are almost the same and the dungeons are almost the same as well, super boring.
FromSoftware tried to create a "easy mode" by letting you catch "Pokemon Souls" and throw them to help you at combat and improve the usage of magic in the early-game, then they ruined the STR and DEX players that wont really care or would use this type of mechanic.
This game really needs a balancing or the majority of the players are not gonna enjoy it. I'v played DS1, DS2 and Bloodborne, they are hard, not unfair as this game is.
Miyazaki proved that he CANNOT create a open-world game and Dark Souls shouldnt be a open-world game. In all games the world is dead and empty of good people but full of boring enemies. Try again later, because this game was a failure.

I don't want to be banned from playing even such lame games that are full of bugs and do not shine with graphics that reveal all the possibilities of the new generation. generations of hypocrisy and political games.

After 50 hours of playtime and beating every main boss, I can say the game is amazing. It still has it's issues, but the overall experience is one of the best I've ever had while playing a game. It still has it's issues, but the overall experience is one of the best I've ever had while playing a game. I played on a launch day PS4 and doing so led to a few points where the frames dropped to almost a standstill. This only happened a few times, but it's one of the reasons holding the game back from a 9 or 10. I guarantee that if I were to play this on a PS5 or RTX 3000+, the game would be near perfect.

The map is massive and has something to do no matter where you go. The only thing is, rather than telling you where to go or giving you a waypoint to follow, you have to find everything yourself. The game doesn't hold your hand in any aspect of the game including the map. You have to pay attention to near every piece of dialogue in order to pick up clues that will hint to where you need to go next.

The combat is the culmination that everything FromSoft has work on in the last decade and you can clearly tell. Shades of DS3, Bloodborne, and Sekiro are all over this game. The bosses are very difficult, but not unfair or impossible. Margit is the toughest first story boss in the series, but there are multiple ways of going about the fight. One, you can keep trying over and over. Two, you can get stronger and come back later. Or three, find an item that might help with the boss. Margit's Shackle is an item the specifically helps with this boss. Every boss provides a unique challenge and forces you to come up with unconventional solutions. One of the biggest questions the game asks you is "Oh so you beat that boss? What if there were two of them?" Gank bosses are very common here and some aren't very well designed.

Like most Fromsoft stories, it's very vague and up to the player whether or not they really want to pay attention to it. This comes in the form of exploration. The more exploring you do, npc's you meet, and areas you unlock, the more the story starts to come together and give you the completed story. The story is as deep and fleshed out as the player is willing to make it.

Overall the game is around a High 8 to low 9 for me. First game in a long time that makes me want to get 100% in. If you are on the edge of buying it or not, try it out and see what happens, you might just find one of your favorite games of all time.

    ***SPOILERS***
There are still bosses that are poorly designed. Crucible knight and misbegotten warrior is painful to play against because the developers just threw two bosses in one fight without thinking about balance or the arena they fight you in. Godskin Duo is annoying because they tried to break agro by giving you pillars to hide behind, but it doesn't matter if both mobs are the same speed and both have ranged attacks. They tried to channel the spirit of O&S, but fell short. Rykard is a reskinned version of Yhorm in the way that you need a special weapon that's specifically designed for the fight in order to have a chance at winning. The elden beast is probably my least favorite boss in the game. The fact that it has so many two-shot long ranged attacks is already hard, but it constantly runs to the other side of the stage a few seconds after you close the gap makes it 100x more annoying to fight.

Great game, Sure it's a bit buggy right now on pc and ps5, but I am confident that will be patched. It is definitely a hard game, not for those who want a relaxed rpg. If I had to find a gripe with Elden Ring, it would be that some of the bosses are repeated for overworld and dungeon bosses. Other then that, 10/10.

This has been my first DS game and it has been great! Yes it can be challenging for sure, but that is what gives those feelings of success after finally beating that boss. If you hit a wall, then go somewhere else and you won't be disappointed!

I went into the game and took my time, enjoyed the map and the countless hidden places and things in every corner of which there is many! I am still not 100% complete and have lots to do. Replayability is great offering so many different ways to go through the game to keep it new.
The only thing I found overtly difficult was the steep learning curve at the beginning, but don't let that dampen the brilliance of the rest of the game. You will catch on and any subsequent playthroughs will be even easier! This has made me realize how many games just let you be OP and walk through things.

Elden Ring is a fun and interesting rpg with tight game mechanics. It runs flawlessly on ps4 in an age where the AAA companies can only put out one disaster after another. Fromsoftware has done gamers a great service. Best game ever imo!!!

This has to be hands down the best souls game to date. Keeps everything that you love: difficult but fair combat, deep lore(that isn’t spoon fed to you), amazing boss/enemy design and adds a few awesome features: horse back riding, open world map, and more. The level design is beautiful and the graphics are not nearly as bad as the review bombers are saying. I’ve only notice a few performance issues(graphics will jump in, 1 or 2 second frame rate drop, and a weird green line that will appear for half a second). Again nothing like the review bombers are suggesting. I honestly think if you have never played a souls game but have wanted to, PLAY THIS GAME. You won’t regret it! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I thought this would be a fun game. So I got it. Ended up being a brutally difficult leaving almost no room for fun. It’s almost impossible to actually find your way through things unless you played a dark souls game and know that things are just hiding against walls waiting to 1 shot you. The bosses are literally insane they can easily kill you faster than you can get one hit off with almost any weapon that isn’t small it’s just all in all a game that will make you hate it and will take much more time than it’s worth. So if you like games that give the bosses the cool move sets and the better weapons than by all means waste the 60 dollars and have fun either spending a full 30 min chipping away at a bosses health and practically just dodging the whole time or killing small enemy’s that roam to farm runes for weeks and weeks just to level up slightly (which makes almost no difference to anything except what u can use) so you can maybe kill your first boss and move on to the other 20+. This game has been a breathe of fresh air. It’s very challenging and rewarding. The game rewards you for being curious and exploring the world. You will be punished if your not cautious in your adventuring. I also really like the minimalistic UI. It’s the best ‘worst time’ I ever had 10/10

No matter how many studios try to replicate the formula, From Software is the only one that can deliver authentic Souls experience. [Issue#259, p.36]
