I found Dying Light to be a very interesting mesh of gameplay and story. The gameplay tends to be good. I generally like the parkour system, until I accidentally press backward slightly while jumping and end up flying off the side of a four-story building.

There is clear progression as you gain more skills and better weapons. Zombies go from being tedious to kill with your iron pipe that you fished out of a dumpster, to being sliced in half with your honed katana blade. Parkour gets better with more skills, and becomes really exciting with the final couple agility skills. Some of the controls get in the way of themselves, such as the dodging mechanic which you will use to accidentally launch yourself off of cliffs. You'll also encounter points where climbing into the window and not on to the roof will be as enraging as it was in Assassin's Creed: Unity.

The killing objectives get tired as enemies become repetitive, and the only changing factor is the number they throw at you at once. This didn't bother me to much, as the scenery and plot objectives kept me engaged. The zombies do become more difficult as you progress, and different types of zombies begin making appearances, giving you a bit more damage but failing to make you really change your strategy.

One word: Platforming. It isn't always good, and you'll wonder why they made certain choices- particularly the ones that you find in the story objectives.

I thought the story was pretty good. It was more than the banal, 'zombie apocalypse-must survive' cliche. I like the interactions between the characters, and I found your character's narrative to be fulfilling. Occasionally the main character would spout out my own thoughts about a situation- which felt pretty gratifying.

The multiplayer is pretty bad. It's one zombie (whose player had to have purchased a new copy of the game) versus up to four human players. There's a lot wrong with this, so I'll try to keep it organized by chronology. As a human, your world can be invaded by a player-controlled zombie called a Night Hunter. Now, you can disable this possibility in the in-game menu, however often you get roped into this mode- and it is boring as it is pointless and broken. First, the game is designed to be four survivors versus one zombie, but often through connection errors or just the survivors saying 'no thanks,' you'll be left alone against the zombie. Often when I played as the zombie, I would enter a game only to immediately have the game end because all of the survivors quit. Playing as the zombie, if the game didn't end it was often because one or more of the survivors were afk. Easy points for the zombie, but really sucks for the survivor. Anyway, it's bad and it should be dismissed.

Overall I enjoyed the single-player mode, and playing with friends in cooperative modes was engaging enough (honestly I preferred being alone so I could keep a steady pace during the missions). The horror moments in this game were few, with most of them occurring when the game put you outside at night, or exploring a dark and quiet place where you knew zombies would be crawling out of every crevice eventually.

Good game, enjoyed it. 8/10, 8.5 in my book forever.

This is a review with 21 Hours played.

I love this game I really do but it scores 8 of 10 because I feel like i was lied too about the be a zombie mode because it's not exaclty what was advertised, saying you can invade someone's game it's not really invading because when you do invade it swtiches to Vs type mode when i heard you can invade someone's game you would chase them down during the night and ruin their quest line, the night never ends when this happens and the UV lamp is over powered it only takes a quick flash from the UV and you will just stop in your tracks when pouncing lastly it is hard to see what is going on through the filter.

Now that the worst part is out of the way on with the good, the freerunning is fantastic once you unlock a few skills such as the roll because it makes the free running more flowing, jumping from the roof and landing on a car/any soft landing area never looses it's rush. Running away is a valid tatic due to the free running. You might have heard people saying that the free running is like Mirrors edge, I wouldn't say that because in mirrors edge you could build up speed with everything being well timed but on Dying Light you move at the same speed all the time which is still quite fast also the free running is more simplified that mirrors edge.

The combat is nice and visceral the weapons feel nice and weighty, one downside is that unlike dead island you can't opt to use your R stick to aim your swing which i really loved it because I could choose to break arms etc easier, although the auto is really good chooses vertical and horizontal swings acordingly but there is no reason to really aim to break arms as there are enough skills to make things easier with the killing. Guns are quite hard to find at early levels. but don't seem to level up when I came across a police rife the first time and at later levels they had same stats but are still deadly at higher levels, but the use of guns are not recommended because it will draw the zombies in but will also summon virals that can climb and sprint after you or who ever made the noise ;)

Zombies in this games are to be feared, not because they are scary but because 5 or more WILL destroy you, there are special type zombies out there which help change things up as you level up and get better items you will start to breese through the low level zombies like they are made of tissue paper but getting over confident at this stage will still get you killed quickly. Human's are also to be feared a few bullets will kill you even at higher levels, they won't just chrage you they will wait for you to attack and throw knifes. I was surpirzed that you can cut the heads, arms and legs off of a human just like the zombies unlike dead island I know it's a small thing but i didn't expect it in todays up tight rating system.

I have also seen people saying that the side quests are boring and fetch quests. the latter is true most of them are go here and collect x or speak to x who will ask you to go collect x but it's not straight forward as that one mission has you locate a video in a video store where they are all stored alphabetically, once you return you have to use the free running to find a way into a house to finish the quest and my personal faveourate quest was climbing the massive supports of a bridge getting right to the top and throwing my self off in the pitch black into the sea below and it was amazing! There is one mission type that returns and it will drive you mad, escort quests my god everytime i have done these they get smushed into the floor by one of the special zombies which just made me angry and i stopped doing them.

There are tons of collectables: notes, zombie statues and flags. Notes are strange usually you will be asked to press a button to open it and read it or it would open automatically but it doesn't you have to go into the menu and open it if like me you don't realise you can read them and open them later on they can loose abit of context.

In summary this is a 8/10 could have been more if some of the niggling issues had been ironed out but I still really enjoy it and plan to try 100% it. Also I haven't bought the season pass I don't think they are a good idea beyond CoD and Battlefeild.

i cant recall a game that was as uneven as dying light. i would totally believe that two different teams were doing two 'halfs' of the game.
while the first part is kinda dull, and i found myself unsatisfied with the game, playing out of boredom
the second half kicks ass. everything is better - map design and movement, missions, side quests, enemies, even the protagonist becomes more

how is that even possible ? no idea, but i know that if you bounce back after starting the game you should really have that in mind that the longer you play the better it gets and just push forward.

p.s how could they not include homemade bows and flamethrowers from the very beginning (pre future DLC) - that sucks badly

Really trying to like this game but when you die 3-5 times for every single mission(even side missions) it get's old really quick. Admittedly I may just suck.

Graphics are nice and the thought is nice, but it's too frustrating for me to play. It seems more like a chore than fun to turn this game on.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel that this game does not offer a great amount of variety and has a lack of new boss zombies. There are the normal zombies, runners, nightmares, goons, spitters, boilers, boomers, and then the demolisher. Unfortunately the demolisher only appears around three times in the game unless you go hunting for one.

The co-op aspect of the game is fun and allows friendly competition between you and your friend. You can challenge each other throughout the game on various missions like climbing tower races and kill the most zombie in a time limit. You can also play through the single player story together with single player cut scenes. They do not allow you to play the final level together and show that there is no reason why you needed to be split up.

Story wise this game is seriously lacking with boring characters and deaths of characters you meet maybe twice. The deaths feel meaningless and try to make you feel sad with off theme music and emotional out bursts from Crane. The mission that take you through the story are mostly diverse and fun to play including my favorite mission called The Pit. While playing these missions you will probably glance over the story surrounding it.

While not hunting zombies or playing main missions there are tons of side missions and other things to try in the city including clearing out safe houses, climbing towers, racing to air drops, and free running races. There is also the be the zombie DLC that alows you to invade a friends single player game and fight at night over the zombies nests. I have a problem with this only because it is such a small mode it could have been included into the game and DLC.

The game has enjoyable gameplay and good graphics even though it suffers from a terrible story with a poor ending. The story has very little emotional attachment to any characters. It does have a wide variety of weapons and crafting new ones. So i give this game a seven out of ten and declare it a good game but not at full price.

I played a little of Dead Island but I thought the game was too clunky IMO. This game is smooth with the addition of the Parkour system that is responsive on all but several occasions. Now, Mirror's Edge is one of my favorite games of all time but I don't think this Parkour system is as good as Mirror's Edges. It is still pretty good and makes running around the town truly enjoyable.

The variety of different side quests with their own story lines is awesome. Each story gives you an insight on how people are trying to survive these hard times and really adds to the atmosphere. This is exactly what I was looking for after Far Cry 4 failed to deliver on that front.

The three leveling trees: survivor, agility, and power all have their own ways of being leveled and add to the variety within the game. Each time you level up, you gain new abilities which actually make you feel stronger then you were before. Weapons scale as you level so by the time you are around 20 you feel like a badass that nobody wants to mess with.

One of my favorite features is the day and night cycle. You are truly trying to survive at night because if you aren't prepared and let yourself get overwhelmed you will most certainly die. Even after playing for 30+ hours I still get that heart pounding feeling when I am being chased through the streets of Harran.

The game looks great as well although there is little variety in the appearance of NPCs and zombies (some look exactly the same). Also, the lip-syncing is just abysmal and hurts the appeal of the game. Quarantine zones are fun but I feel like they could have done more with them. Random events are also fun but, again, there could have been a little more variety. The variety of the zombie types is pretty good, on the scale of Left 4 Dead 2.

Besides a few nuisances here and there, I find myself coming back to this game everyday. Even just running around and killing zombies has yet to lose it's appeal. Running around and collecting materials, new weapons, and doing random events is enjoyable with the great Parkour system.

I have a hard time finding anything bad to say about this game which is a good thing. This game is definitely better than Far Cry 4 in my opinion and does things just as well as other sandbox games out there. People say it doesn't innovate and I guess to an extent it borrows from a lot of its mechanics from other games but the night cycle is a new feature that I have yet to see executed as well as this game has done. I don't think people should dock a game for borrowing mechanics that people enjoy. If anything, they do a great job on making all those mechanics work cohesively.

A great game, well worth your money. People really need to support smaller triple AAA studios such as Techland who pour their heart into a game (or else we will be left with big triple AAA titles and indie games). They love this game and it shows in the detail. Remember they pushed their game back by several months when it wasn't ready. I respect them for acknowledging that their game needed some work and I think it's better for it. Can't wait to keep playing and I hope they add some great expansions in the future.

    Thanks for reading!

Have you ever wanted to play in a zombie infested wonderland? No? I have. Techland gave me exactly what I’ve always wanted in an open-world zombie game: streets filled to the brim with zombies, loot everywhere you turn, terrifying zombies that only come out at night, a fun upgrade system, and an enjoyable story that explains why the zombies are where they are.

Dying Light’s story is a fairly simple one. You play as Global Relief Effort (GRE) undercover operative Kyle Crane, who’s on a mission to recover some important data somewhere in the fictional city of Harran, which happens to be overrun by zombies. This of course doesn’t give you a whole lot of reason to care about what’s going on, as you don’t know what the “important data” actually is. However, throughout the first few missions of the story, due to the GRE acting stupid over the radio and Crane figuring out that there are still humans in Harran that need help, he decides to take matters into his own hands and help the people instead. Players will see the gradual change in Crane’s heart as the story progresses, making them actually care what happens to many of the characters surrounding him.

It also doesn’t hurt that Techland’s writing has vastly improved since their previous games in the Dead Island franchise. While I did enjoy those games for their zombie-killing fun, the writing always felt bland and just there to move things along. Kyle Crane’s personality was shown beautifully through the writing (and Roger Craig Smith’s excellent voice acting). Players get to see him struggle with the reality of what’s going on in Harran, mourn the loss of new friends, grow to hate one of the local faction leaders, all while still keeping his sense of humor in tense situations.

What really surprised me about the storytelling in Dying Light was not its main story though, it was the level of detail in some of the side quests. Of course, just like many other games, Dying Light has its fair share of vague fetch quests that are only there for the sake of keeping players busy. But if you can look past those, there are some truly amazing and sometimes even hilarious side quests available.

Dying Light also showed a huge leap forward in Techland’s graphics. Gone are the days of blurry, poorly textured environments. It looked beautiful throughout the entire game. Their experience shows even more if you have played Dead Island when you realize that there is literally no slowdown. Dying Light constantly throws hordes of 20+ zombies at you, requiring you to either swing your weapon like Billy Butler swings his bat (at every pitch, it doesn’t matter if it’s a strike or not), or run like a mad man to get away.

My one complaint is that the farther I got into the game, I experienced more texture popping. It was weird because the first 30 hours I played Dying Light, I never had an issue. But as I got into hours 50-60, each time a level would load there would be some pretty bad texture popping for about five seconds.

But who cares about a good story, funny side quests, and pretty graphics!? How was the gameplay? AMIRIGHT!? Good news! Dying Light’s gameplay is incredibly fun! I really mean that too. All joking aside, Techland’s decision to add parkour into the game was a fantastic idea. Dying Light sets itself apart from every other zombie game by giving players the ability to sprint, vault, jump, swing, roll, etc. to their heart’s desire. This made traversing the huge city of Harran extremely fun, and made me not even care that there wasn’t a fast travel option.

Aside from the parkour element being fun, Dying Light’s combat was also very satisfying. While its a simple system (collect melee weapons + swing melee weapons = kill zombies), I never got bored. The slow motion kill cam and the deep upgrade system made every bout with my undead enemies very enjoyable. Dying Light was also one of the few zombie games that come to mind where staying as quiet as possible is extremely key to staying alive. So what if you have a kickass police rifle? The second you fire it into a crowd of zombies, you will have alerted the strongest and fastest zombies in the area to swarm to your position. This made the “zombie experience” feel as real as I’ve always imagined it would be.

The day and night cycle is another cool feature in Dying Light. Traversing Harran during the day is a cakewalk compared to doing it at night. Zombies become much more aggressive and special “super zombies” called Volatiles only come out at night. Volatiles can take an extraordinary amount of damage, even from the highest level of weapons, and they are able to deal out damage really fast, so it’s better to just never be seen by them or never let them catch you.

Dying Light is the zombie game I’ve been waiting for.

Pretty neat game, like the rpg elements and crafting. I thought it would be terrible, but after reading reviews, I purchased it and am really glad I did. The game never gets old in my preference. The co-op is amazing and makes the game so much more interesting because just watching your friend cut through zombies while you are sitting on a rooftop. I would definitely give this game a 10/10 and if you are into these kind of games, this is a amazing game. Expand

I've played 32 hours of Dying Light so far. This is one of those titles that compliment your console of choice. The graphics are amazing. The day/night cycle, weather effects, ambient sounds and music are all extremely well done. Missions are fun and challenging.

The zombie types are varied with different strengths and weakness and definitely add a new element of danger. One zombie is a fair challenge but a group of zombies is very difficult to fight off, even with abilities leveled up! The night time is really dark and really dangerous and adds a real element of suspense especially against special infected enemies.

There are Safe Zones scattered throughout the city that are lit up with UV lighting (Some special infected are sensitive to UV lighting). Some of the Safe Zones require you to secure them first by defeating the undead population and turning on power breakers to restore lighting. Finding them at night is not that hard as they are well lit but getting to them without getting spotted by a particulary dangerous special infected called a Volatile or getting attacked by a group of zombies in the dark can be really difficult.

Leveling up is similar to Dead Island where you have 3 skill trees to level up your character. Weapon variety is much more expanded this time to include Resident evil style weapon mods like freeze grenades & flame grenades. Speaking of Resident Evil, Roger Craig Smith who voices Chris Redfield in the Resident Evil games also does a great job voicing the main character of Dying Light Kyle Crane. While the lip syncing is not perfect in Dying Light, it's also not that bad and the voice acting is well done for all of the supporting cast in Dying Light.

You just can't go wrong with this title. If you love zombie games you will love this. If you loved FarCry 3, Mirrors Edge, Fallout 3, Dead Island and The Last of Us then you will love this game. Its as though they have taken the best elements of various games and put them into this game.

Just Cause 2 and Rocksteady's Batman titles use a grappling hook mechanic. Dying Light also uses a grappling hook mechanic and it works really well. There is a crafting system similar to The Last of Us and Techland has done away with finding work benches. As long as you have the schematic, parts and/or ingredients you can craft anything on the fly.

It is clear that the team at Techland put a lot of work into this game and it shows. The game truly is a must own game.

    Thanks for reading.

I have been playing COOP for a first time in a looong while with a good friend and what a blast, every aspect of single player coop are done RIGHT in this game, other developers should definetly take notice.
We still have a lot to do in Dying Light, the game is just HUGE. Value for money dudes.

I personally don't get all the negative reviews this games has gotten from the so called "critics".

This has to be one of the most intense games that I have ever played. At night it has a very creepy and adrenaline fueled vibe that only games like Dead Space have had. The story... I can see why people might say that its generic, but I will be damned if it isn't entertaining! And the parkour... oh the parkour.... Its one of the most difficult, but one of the most satisfying things this game has to offer. You'll often be questioning if you can make that jump or not, and when you do attempt to make it, you're holding your breath for that second that it takes for the jump to end. But then your guy grabs onto the ledge and you exhale. I've never played a game that's done that to me.

The one gripe that's also praise is that **** is this game hard. From going across tight ropes suspended high above the ground to the combat, this is truly one of the most difficult games that I've played. Its frustrating at times however, because, for instance, your character is severely limited in his ranged attacks but your enemies aren't, so you have to be very strategic in going about beating them without getting torn to bits by their bullets.

Overall, I would reccomend this game to anyone and everyone.

The fighting feels right (Dead Island vets will definitely appreciate the advances Techland has made in this regard) , the side-quests are fun and usually feel like your involved in doing something important, and leveling up adds all kinds of new tricks to your repertoire. The city itself is basically a piece of apocalyptic art and comes with all kinds of diversity... from free running through the streets (which at night is a great way to get your heart pumping) to battling it out in the tunnels, to diving underwater to escape a to scouring all three floors of the school for loot, to base jumping off of the top of bridges into hordes of oncoming zombies. And the sound... ohhh the sound. Quite frequently find myself just standing in one place (hopefully on top of a building) just listening to things going on around you -- something knocks over a glass bottle just around the next corner, behind you there's a moan as a Night Hunter spots you and heads your way while you hear the "splat" as another Infected steps into one of your traps.

If you enjoy Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later, and The Walking Dead, had some fun with Dead Island or Farcry3/4, and can get past the "Field of View is nowhere are good as Assassin's Creed" jabber, this game is for you.

The flaw? You are an errand boy and most of the things you do, especially in side quests, is go to point a, to point b, then back to point a. This is a decent FP Parkour Zombie simulator. Basically, it's Mirror's Edge with Zombies. If you liked Mirror's Edge, you'll enjoy this game. But there's more to the game than just that and it both helps and hurts the overall experience.
Starting with the story, you're a runner for the good guys, the Tower people, who are looking for a cure for the zombie outbreak, while also a spy for the organization who wants to take the cure and do mysterious things to it. The story is decent enough and with Troy Baker, who is basically just printing money with all the VO gigs he's gotten since the Last of Us, giving a very well done performance, it can suck you in at times. There are giant lulls in the story and not all the characters are very well done. But it works enough to keep you invested.
The gameplay is fun but can take some time getting used too. Like Mirror's Edge before it, it can take a bit to really know when to jump and what you can and can't grab onto. After some trial and error early on in the game, things become a bit more easier later on. The biggest problem with the game, however, stems from the fact that they force you to run everywhere. There is no waypoint system in the game whatsoever and that, by itself, probably added a good 1-2 hours on the gameplay. Yes the running is fun but when almost every quest takes you to all 4 corners of the map, a waypoint system is just about mandatory. Needless to say, I stopped a number of times because I was tired of running past the same spots over and over again on the same quest.
The music is very hit or miss, mostly miss, but the zombies sounded great. The graphics were good in some spots and terrible in others, especially when you would look at zombie corpses on the ground.
The main problem I see here is that there is just a general sense of "been there, done that" with pretty much everything in the game. Dead Island did the zombie FP thing, Mirror's Edge did the Parkour, and there are elements of other games mixed in, but nothing is particularly memorable. In a few months, I don't believe anyone will remember this game for being one of the best of the year. The biggest crime that the game committed was that there's nothing for it to really hang its hat on at the end of the day. It's a decent game that won't be turning any heads.

First of all the graphics (I'm on PS4), are extremely pretty, with foliage that sways in the wind, and lighting that looks gorgeous no matter what time of the day in game. Next is the game play. The free running system has breathed new life into the zombie genre. Its fluidity mixed with the tactics you can use make for some interesting situations to get into or out of. My main problem with the free running system would be the tower climbing. It feels like it was tacked on and it feels a bit difficult to climb. The combat, which is largely melee, is fine tuned to feel fluid and hits feel like they connect in the best most brutal ways. Last, but definitely not least, is the soundtrack. The ambient music, the action music, it all works beautifully to create the true ambiance of a zombie outbreak. Techland has made a very solid zombie game, with a few hitches here and there. Definitely a solid 7/10, and I would recommend this game to anybody with a PS4. Expand

This game is worth a punt. It looks good with a few oddities that don't detract from the game. There's a palpable underlying worry when faced with any group of zombies, that you'll be manhandled to death. That's not to mention the hulking zombies and the newly turned that come running interrogating load sounds.

Yes the plot is a bit thin and the voice acting could be better. Whilst the story and the missions are slightly under par it's a fun jaunt that's keeping me interested. In fact when looking at the sub par score blasted about by the so called critics I think it proves that Meta Critic should reverse the way it represents the games. To be less critic orientated and more user orientated. I have severe reservations that the critics actually know what they're on about. Even so I say play this game. It's fun. It's tense at times. The fighting whilst, overly clumsy rewards and punishes to the correct degree. It's not perfect and I wonder at people who expect 100% perfection are in fact being 100% realistic to any degree.

I like this game. Give it a go.

The game is pretty, stable and fun. The story so far (12 hours in) is better than I expected. The parkour is fun but would be much better if the jump and grab worked all the time unstead of just 2/3 of the time. It is so annoying jumping up and down uselessly while trying to grab a ledge while zombies are breathing down your neck (why do you need to look up to jump up - seems unnecessary). I wish they would get the code from Uncharted or Assassins Creed or Shadow of Mordor for parkour and this would be one hell of a game. Yet I am still playing because it is still fun and I seem to care what happens. Combat is decent, but you feel pretty underpowered at first and the game pretty much encourages you to run away from most fights (although you will have to fight to clear safehouses). I can see it getting tedious if one played the game nonstop start to finish (which is what the reviewers are doing more or less), but in 2-3 hour chunks it is good fun. The quests do bring this game down a little. That much is true. Just when you think you have finished a quest, they say, "Oh and one more thing you have to do before I give you your reward." Yet, they are fun enough to keep me playing longer than I have played in a long time. Night is scary and I haven't ventured out much yet because I am a wuss. So far I have 2 quests that require night and I did the one mandatory one. It wasn't too difficult (avoid vision cones on mini map which makes you move slower - if you try to speed run you will have 5 of them - special night zombies - on your butt in no time and they are fast). One other thing. The city design seems like it could have been better thought out to make running the roof tops faster and easier, but it adds to realism when your rooftops run out (not that jumping like this game is ultra realistic - but who cares - its a game). Also, a way to climb down would be nice (currently the only way down is to jump in trash bags or jump and hope it isn't high enough to kill you). Many have listed the facial animations as a detractor and while the characters are not super expressive, its not bad enough to take me out of the story (the animations are not robotic or anything). Upgrades and crafting are rewarding and well done. I am glad I took the chance on this game! Good fun that I see playing until the end (which I can't seem to do with most open world quest slogs). Had I known this, I would have waited months or years for the expected price drop to experience the above average single player content and been adequately satisfied with it. This game is amazing. When you start off you might feel like the parkour is not very smooth or good. But in reality the game is meant to be like that. As you play more you actually get better at parkour your self. As you also gain more xp you can unlock things even like wall run. This game's perk system is awesome and very rewarding.

My heart was pumping the first time this happened, kind of like the first time I was invaded by an enemy player in Dark Souls.

It's not a perfect game.. Every person you meet for the first time decides to confess all their life secrets to you which is odd. Melee combat against zombies can get a bit tiresome.

But I have to say, if I've been playing the game all weekend.. Its good enough for me.

Gives you barely any guns and makes you value the weapons you find even more this way as it's not hard to get carried away and break them (but there's a perk for that as well). Music - nothing sensational, but fits the mood perfectly, the main theme is absolutely great. And the mood is much more serious than Dead Island, with no blinking objects around the world you feel like you are there instead of the game holding your hand and showing you the goodies around you. You have to work carefully for your progress while being careful of the masses of zombies around at all times - great survival element.
Love the colours - more realistic than most games (including Dead Island and even GTA V), the setting and the colour palette might remind you of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - and this is huge compliment.
The horror comes at night, when you become the prey and vicious zombies will chase you in the dark - and this is how nights in videos games should be (unlike the well lit ones on Rockstar's and Bethesda's games).
Bottom line - fun to play, intriguing main story, tons of good side quests, great visuals and fitting music. Pretty much better than anything that came out in 2014.

Dying Light is generally a darker, more serious game then the former title, however the main antagonist Kyle Crane has some of the most bland and generic dialogue moments I've ever heard in a game. I'm not a big fan of Crane at all - he's about as generic of an American antagonist as can be, and most of his dialogue is just cheesy. That being said, the game's main story is engaging, and there are many side quests to do to keep you on your toes as well. I'm a fan of the new parkour elements implemented throughout the game - they seem to add an even greater element of tension and exploration. The soundtrack from this game is also very unique, and almost serves as a 70's/80's horror film throwback. The game can be a bit buggy however; the key things I have noticed is that the parkour elements can be somewhat unreliable at times, and when moving through the open world at a fast pace there seems to be some frame dropping occasionally. The durability and stamina systems would be more fair individually, however when put together they can make combat very frustrating early on. Fortunately, you level up fairly quickly by gaining experience for doing just about anything and everything. It's also fair to point out that the graphics for this game are great - they may not be the best that the PS4 has to offer, but it's a definite step up over previous gen titles. Dying Light is sure to develop a cult following just as the Dead Island titles - if you are looking for a first person zombie basher with rpg elements and a fusion of parkour gameplay, then you'll probably enjoy this game. The parkour isn't Mirror's Edge levels of intricate, but that's okay because if it was the movement system, while amazing, would have been too much of a distraction from the other gameplay elements. That said, the parkour is very good and exactly at the level it needs to be.

Where I think some complaints come from are from how the game changes about halfway in. What starts out as a survival horror game where resources are scarce, weapons are weak, and where you are likely to die if you encounter even 4 or more zombies, let alone a speciality one, later becomes a more fast paced zombie stomp romp that's fun to play with your friends, allowing you to quickly dispatch zombies with ease.

Some people came for the survival, some for the romp, the fact is you get both, and that's a good thing. I have no idea why people don't like the genre mesh, if I am paying this much for a game and it had better give me as much as Dying Light has.

They infuse elements of Moroccan, South American architecture, a stunning walled city surrounding by gorgeous cascading cliffs and a fantastic beach. Heck there are even ruined Roman aqueducts, it's insane!!! So many small details.

And the fact that you can now traverse the high rise roof tops is incredible. It's also filled with TONS of loot, eye candy, zombie hordes and beautiful indoor environments.

    What I LOVE:
Story is engaging and cleverly written (cliched enough to not take itself too seriously)

Mechanics are smooth as butter, free-running is astonishingly well built and easy. The melee combat is intense and satisfying.

The sound design and voice-overs are TOP notch. The music is fantastic, a play on the films of the 80's Zombie revolution in the likes of Romaro. The zombie sounds and shrieks are bone chilling; especially at night!

Lot of satisfying secondary missions very finely crafted to augment the main missions; the story always makes sense and always further develops the characters.

Fantastic Coop and PVP (Zombie mode) mechanics.

Fantastic atmosphere! Doesn't take itself too seriously but is also dark enough to make it tense and gritty.

Runs great on PS4, occasional frame drops but I rarely notice it enough to care. Would have obviously been nice at 60fps, but even PC is having trouble apparently.

    I can't understand how this game hasn't gotten a 90%+

When it works well, it's great, I found it immensely enjoyable to perform combat stunts such as vaulting over a zombie to drop kick another into a wall of spikes, but when it doesn't work it can be incredibly frustrating, and there's no game manual and often no explanation of what's happening, a few times, my character exploded or just died without warning and with no visual cue as to what happened, sometimes enemies would pop up mere feet away and in one mission, a large enemy's hammer would end up hitting me no matter what I did. The game uses a checkpoint system to save, there's no manual save options, and I think the developers knew what they were doing when they implemented that. Large open world games, like fallout for example, tend to have unexpected glitches in them, some fun, like characters accidently being flung into the stratosphere, or annoying, like getting stuck in the geometry and falling into a bottomless gray abyss. Thankfully, there are few and far between, and the game respawns you quickly and you're back in the action, although with a stiff penalty, the 'survivor points' which you use to purchase general skills and abilities, and which is also tied to the loot system and vendors, takes a big hit, and when it's not your fault it feels incredibly unfair. Speaking of loot, Techland pretty much ripped off Destiny's color coded loot system, although personally I think they did it much better. Each weapon has stats for base damage, durability, and handling, where rarer weapons will be better in all categories. There's also an option to upgrade, which increases these stats further, in addition to that, you can also further upgrade these weapons with improvised modifications with junk parts you find around the city to add electric shock or burning damage, which also give a nice visual modification. The system is fairly complex and should give you plenty to mull over, and the melee weapons are visually pleasing, the firearms on the other hand have little variation, and are rare, and using them will attract more enemies, although they become a necessity for certain points in the game. Ammo is even more rare in the game world, and the developers have limited your ammunition reserves to what you can carry on your person, which is around 60 pistol rounds and 100 rifle rounds, which can go pretty quickly, and which you cannot stockpile in your player's stash bag, which seemed to be a little useless after the beginning of the game, since only weapons take up space in your inventory. Co-op mode changes this a little since you can save a weapon for a friend and drop it for them, and just in general co-op mode can be a lot of fun with the improvised traps around the city, which is definitely the strongest part of the game, the wonderfully designed zombie killing sandbox.

Pros: melee combat, weapon crafting, loot system
environments are fun to use in zombie dispatching, parkour, well designed
sounds are above average, not amazing but zombie howls in the distance are chilling
    night/day gameplay experience changes dramatically
    mostly well balanced

cons: some angering, but not completely game breaking glitches
controls wonky at times, setup is a little hard to get used to, no alternative control scheme
story could have been improved, pacing especially
gameplay mechanics will sometimes not work when you need them to, doesn't happen often but when it does it's aggravating

All in all, it's worth a rental, even more if you have a friend to play it with, just don't expect a lot of gunplay, and look around the internet to get some tips since the game doesn't offer any, I was trying to decide if I should list that as a con, but I think I was just expecting more on screen hints since most new games tend to hold your hand and I've gotten used to it.

This game is phenomenally good fun. Having played GTA V Remastered, Last of Us Remastered, Far Cry 4, Destiny and Diable III in recent months, I can honestly say this game is the most *fun* of all of them.

The other games mentioned are incredibly polished games, some of which have a brilliant story and great voice acting. Dying Light doesn't achieve the same level of polish with voice acting (although on average it's very good), though the story is compelling and variety of missions is decent enough.

Where the game really shines is the atmosphere and the gameplay. Playing this game is essentially like playing an episode of The Walking Dead (TV Series, not game) as you scavenge for resources, make do with what weapons you have, and weave strategically through, over and around large crowds of zombies .
The game leverages many fantastic elements from other games: lock picking from Elder Scrolls oblivion, parkour from Mirrors Edge, grapple "zipping" from Just Cause 2, plant boosters from Far Cry 3/4. The elements operate so well together, and form a thoroughly entertaining experience of travelling within and interacting with the world.

The combat is simply fantastic - it's like melee combat in Skyrim but without the weightlessness: you actually _feel_ the blows you're striking, and smile in grim satisfaction as you sever heads, legs, arms, hands and feet from your undead foes. Beginning the game with metal pipes, hammers and crowbars, over the course of progression you'll be trying out cricket bats, baseball bats, daggers and scythes, later taking down entire zombie crowds with ease as you wield a machete, saber or meat cleaver, and also enjoying a handful of guns such as pistols, semi/full auto submachine guns and shotguns. All weapons are an absolute joy to handle.

There are two maps in the game; the first is a modern city that's been overrun by zombies, with survivors peppered around the place to give you missions and reward opportunities. Later in the game you'll uncover a second area which resembles venice with its waterways, verticality, architecture and adds some open squares where you combat zombie crowds as well as gun-toting soldiers.

The physical reactions of zombies during melee combat are spot on. You can slice a zombie's leg off as it clambers over a fence and it will topple to the ground in a very realistic manner. Bashes, smashes and slices to different parts of a zombie cause it to react as the primate within you so desperately expects.

The three ability trees offer unlocks that are Far Cry-like in how fun they are and how much they add to the variety of your fighting and terrain traversal experience. There are many different abilities to unlock, and all feel valuable in their own way.

The day vs night atmosphere is very different. You'll quickly realise that nighttime is about stealth evasion of the more powerful zombies which appear from 9pm - 6am in game time. Later in the game you're strong enough and sufficiently well equipped to take this devastating foes on head-to-head, though even then they represent a significant challenge. Running away from such a foe and using the slow-mo "Look back" feature, glancing over your shoulder to see the string of zombies tearing after you and one mid-air about to pounce, gives one of the most atmospheric game experiences I've had to date.

Let me say I'm not the biggest fan of scary games. I would call this game atmospheric rather than scary - after the first 30 minutes when you're more familiar with the controls - and have died a few times so know what that's like ;-) - you'll quickly sink into the atmosphere and enjoy the game rather than be terrified.

I cannot recommend this game enough simply for how fun it is. Both single player and co-op are an absolute blast to play. From my play sessions (15+hours) I've found that two-player coop always works flawlessly (coop is superb fun, truly - you even retain the "slow-mo" zombie executions in a personal time bubble). However, when playing with others in another country I've found that 3 players _can_ slow the game down, and 4 or 5 players took the frame rate down to about 10FPS i.e. almost unplayable. Hopefully those issues will be patched soon - for now, the 2-player co-op is plenty to enjoy :-)

If you like games that are about fun rather than award-winning narrative or story, buy this now. You won't regret it.

One guy says "it takes 3 to 4 hits to kill a zombie" and "i cant get passed the first mission, the main character is severely underpowered". I dont think some of these guys understand that the zombies are just a detailed set piece. Dont try to kill every one of them with a wrench because you will lose. You will gain abilities the more you play which will make getting away from zombies easier. My one problem with this game is the lack of side quest change up. Most of it is a little silly but their are a few fun things to do. Like most games they are just fillers to help level up. I dont understand how somebody could say there is no story because there is a great story if you are willing to dive in. Read notes, listen to recordings etc. Saying there is no story is solidifying the fact that you are lazy and expect to have everything spoon fed to you :-). Seriously though i had a blast playing dying light. I am about to start my second run through as we speak. If you are not in to zombie apocalypse survival then dont buy this game. If you are wanting to just get guns, bombs, rocket launchers and just blow thousands of zombies away then donr buy this game. However, if you do want a more "realistic" zombie survival game with awesome parkour and great fighting mechanics and clever bludgeon weapons, you'll love this one. Give it a shot. That's probably the only thing that actually gets me upset. This game is neither a 10 or 0 and I won't give it one of those to balanced out the score. I gave it an 8. So people who need some decent info on the game only need to read the review in this score range. It's not amazing but it's also not terrible. Just rent it from Redbox or Gamefly. Also the parkour they implemented is very nice and fluid. It's easier to get around in this game over Dead Island. If you liked Dead Island than you'll be happy with this since it is a bit better. I am shocked that Dying Light, the most appealing parkour game ever, is just mediocre. I tried to squeeze some hours more out of it, I just couldn't. I heard that PC players are hating the graphics, but on PS4, it seems okay, although I have seen better. The 8.1 user review comes from the people who have played Light for 3 or 4 hours, believe me, it gets wayy boring. There is not much variety of missons in the game, its just kill this, climb this, survive and deliver this. I like the horror though, very atmospheric and terrifying at times. Sometimes, it has few tricks up its sleeves, like awesome ragdoll physics, great multiplayer mode, and killer zombies. But all this is spoiled by the lukewarm game itself. I wanted more from this, It really failed. The story is really bad, so dont go there. It had sooo much hype, but ultimately, Dying Light becomes another game that sucked. Expand

that alot of critics cant seem to let go. It was the company's fault not the games fault. Any way back to the review. Dying light is purely amazing. I for one loved dead
island for what is was a simple zombie hack and slash. Dying lights story in my opinion is generaic but i had fun with it. I truely enjoyed my experience as Kyle Crane.
The secret agent from the GWE trying to get the file that will bring us closer to the cure for this new disease that is a cousin to rabis. The stroy takes its self pretty
serously which i didnt like all that much we are in a world with mutated zombies. I cant take anything serously if i just cut of a zombies head then felt up her ****
to find 19 dollars. But the story was enjoyable. The gameplay is phenominal. I mean honestly ive never had more fun in a zombie open world game. The combat is satisfying
and on point. The parkour is a little tough to get used to but once you get the hang of it its fluent. The day and night cycles feel real and night has this lingering
feeling that at any moment you will die. Which in a lot of cases you probably will. There was this one mission i had to kill this special zombie and take his flesh,
because it was linked to the cure. Or at least thats what i was told. I sat in this dark corner waiting and watching as the fast unkillable zombies walked afraid theyd
see me. As soon as they walked away i charged killed the target and got the item for a mission then excaped threw the dark being chased by the scarest enemy in the game.
that is a experince truely unique to the player of dying light. The graphics are supreb with perfect lighting effects and damn near perfect frame rate. Overall the game is
very fun, its not the perfect game with its lackluster story but everything else is important. I bought this game for killing zombies, i personally dont give a **** why.

It's going to take me a while to finish this game because I can't stop going after air drops whenever they fall, but I can give a first impressions run down.

Story: What little I've played is generic and generally not all that believable, but it's still fun. So if you're into tight, realistic stories then you probably don't like many of the games out there, and you won't like this one.

So if you're into tight, realistic stories then you probably don't like many of the games out there, and you won't like this one. That said, this story is functional so far. Voice acting does not distract from the narrative and at times is not bad at all.

    Graphics
Amazing. Colorful without looking cartoonish. Excellent animation for the free running, whose mechanics work just fine. Some of the weapon animations are weak in my opinion, but such things can be forgiven by most. I thought baseball bats would be a little more satisfying. Good detail.

    Gameplay
Mostly tight. glitches and some faltering here and there, but over all the game works. That's more than can be said for a lot of other games. Haven't had the luxury of coop yet, so I can't comment there. Loot system, upgrade system, skill tree, level up system all seem to have been tested and balanced very well. Nothing seems wasted, nothing seems superfluous. Side missions are acceptable. Nothing super memorable, but they seem to generally add something to the story, however minimally. Experience and rewards are given at a steady pace.

Over all, Techland did a good job. It's not epic. It doesn't revolutionize anything, but it's a solid, fun experience for me so far. Monotony doesn't shake a grinder such as myself as easily as some, even so, the monotony in this game is not as painful as other games I've played. If you want a good zombie game with fun running mechanics and an open world, go ahead and get it.

You can't judge what to buy from someone elses opinion alone (Alien Isolation and Pokémon:OR/AS would be a prime example of this, too much water anyone?). It borrows from popular titles (Skyrim lock-picking) whilst building upon their initial foundation for the game, Dead Island.

When I played the latter I didn't quite enjoy how goofy it felt most of the time. So although they have similarities in their function, the tones present are entirely dissimilar, and that's why I'm enjoying Dying Light to a much higher extent.
I purchased the game day one and have been playing for a few hours each day. One long thing to note before I continue, and avoid if you're playing, is directly quitting the game after sleeping in a safehouse to make it either day or night. I did this because of the lack of a manual save function and didn't know how much progress I would lose or rather, when or what triggered autosaving. As it appears, a characters skills and the story are saved separately, so to my dismay the next day when I booted up the game, I retained my story progression but lost all of my items, blueprints and skill points. Only in that instance and from doing what I mentioned above specifically, did I experience the glitch.

Now, you can always build up your skill points again (which I did) from engaging in the games brilliant parkour system and the Dead Island-esque combat. You can't however, regain a medkit blueprint in order to heal yourself as it's a tutorial acquired item (Gauze and Alcohol). My temporary fix for this, until a patch is released, was getting another medkit blueprint using different materials, specifically herbs. But I come by those a LOT less frequently.
Speaking of which, gathering the resources in the zombie-infested slums of Harran is quite gratifying, along with the added challenge that you are always (generally) in danger. There's been many a time of tossing and tossing fire crackers in order to shift the attention of the undead away from a welcoming air package. That is until you acquire the camo ability, effectively letting you rub the zombo gunk all over yourself from a dead zombie and blending in with the crowd (Walking Dead eat your heart out).

With Harran in mind, I've read about two reviews mentioning the games map-size and that it's average. Now obviously there's some serious lack of progression in the game to announce such a thing. The slums are quite large, they do blend in after awhile and it begins to feel like you know the place as well as your own home. What they fail to mention is Sector 0, or Old Town. This is a different section in the game and a different map entirely (albeit smaller). I won't spoil it's aesthetics but I was in such awe of seeing this brand new area to explore. I wished the map was bigger and they chose the slums to be the smaller of the two. That being said it is still a big and beautiful map.

Despite very minor hitches and peoples suspicions about late review codes and what state the game must have been in, I have only experienced the one glitch that I mentioned earlier. Which is a lot less than I did playing AC: Unity.

My advice would be to pick up this fabulous title and give Techland your support. A lot of the bad I've read is simply that it is not 100% original, but rather a mesh of various popular mechanics, which is honestly not many. The main one that hits everyones minds is Mirrors Edge parkour. But I simply fail to see how you could possibly have made it any differently. It's a man jumping and hoisting himself up on buildings. There's not a lot of room for variation. If you're not a picky critic, and aren't expecting a Telltale plot in the ways of the games story, I can guarantee you'll have a lot of fun playing Dying Light.

The game also features co-op and an asymmetrical multiplayer mode where one player becomes a special infected that can lay waste your entire squad in seconds.

I could go on for hours talking about how good this game is but I'll just leave it at this...

It's a great zombie game with an interesting story, great gameplay and some fantastic atmosphere.

My knock on the game is the repetitive missions. It's no Destiny, but it's enough to ask for more diversity. Overshadowing the repetitive missions however, is the smooth and fluid game play. It's Dying Light's strongest attribute and does a great job with the mirrors-edge type of combat/free running. There are some other elements that will remind you of Far Cry and Assassin's Creed, which is a good thing.

The day/night cycle is a really neat feature that adds more dynamic to the game. You can gain extra exp at night but by putting yourself at more of a risk.

One of the things ive noticed people not liking is that weapons have a degrading system, but by putting just a LITTLE effort and time into the crafting system, I have more bad ass weapons and combos than I actually need. Complaining about that feature is a sign of huge impatience and lack of effort.

Overall this is a really great game. 8.5/10

Trite doesn't begin to cover it. If you are unable to figure out all of the plot twists and even better plot twists, shame on you.

What I would have liked to see though, is a scaling of difficulties when playing alone or with teams. 3 friends and myself rip through hoards of zombies like they are nothing. All alone, I cannot pick a simple lock without getting grabbed 3 or 4 times.

With all that out of the way, I recommend buying this game. For people who didn't like the linearity of mirrors edge, this is an open world parkour environment done to perfection. The gameplay is what sells this game. It is also a sandbox game offering you most likely 60-100 hours of gameplay with side quests, some of which are worth doing, and a main quest line that has you thinking you are spiderman without a suite.

Fazit: Du mochtest Dead Island? Du wirst Dying Light lieben!

I really enjoy playing this game. I picked it up the day it came out and have been spending 80% of my free time playing. I'm not usually a big fan of games where you collect a bunch of stuff but I have found a lot of fun looking for items and upgrading my weapons I found a sword in the stone type of weapon exclave thought that was pretty cool find. The graphics awesome, story is interesting keeps you wanting to know what's gonna happen, tons of side quests, customizing weapons is great fun testing them out on zombies the sword I found destroys the zombies, it's fun wandering around finding all kinda items and secret areas kinda like fall out exploration. The only 2 things I'm not super happy about are the button layout it's hard to dodge a zombie and hit them with a weapon at the same time and some of the climbing up buildings is somewhat difficult. If you like a open world where you can customize weapons and play around with combining all kinda upgrades. I also think the story is really interesting not sure why a lot of people say it's bland kept me going to see what was gonna happen next. I would pick this game up 38% done and 20 hours in well worth 60$. I have only Tryed the online 3 times but it seems fun I'm just having so much fun playing the campaign at the moment but it has a left for dead kinda feel it's also neat that it ties right into the campaign if you want it to. So overall a 9/10 for me great job WB you guys made a super fun zombie game that with a head set on in the dark alone scares the crap out of me , the first time I ran into a night hunter woke my GF up cuz I screamed when it broke threw the wall!! Good game :) Expand

    Gameplay
I am sure many of you are worried do to the fact that Techland made the game. believe me I was to, but had a few games I didn't play anymore so I traded them in for the game. I was NOT disappointed. The game is a blast to play. I am 20+ hours in (lvl12 in parkour tree, lvl19 in combat, and lvl14 in survival) and I am still not bored. The combat and parkour are fluid and responsive. At first the game may feel off do to controls and the parkour feeling limited. This will pass. As you gain levels in the parkour tree you really feel fluid. It makes sense to because the main character does not have a parkour background. The controls come with time. The combat is a lot of fun and at first basic. If you are expecting to be able to take down hordes of zombies right of the bat you are going to be disappointed. At the beginning as little as 4 zombies can over whelm you if you aren't careful. Later however you can slay zombies like its second nature. All the skills in the level trees are relevant in some way. which is rare in a game that has 3 different trees. Gathering supplies is also a lot of fun and is made simple with a senses skill. you start with skill and all you do is hold down X (on PS4) and a wave will shoot out in all directions and mark items in a small area for you. The multiplayer works well. I did notice a bit of lag at times but this could be do to my friend being in a snow storm at the time.

    Graphics
The graphics (at least on PS4) look great. There are a few small issues that arise occasionally. For example when using the grapple hook it will occasionally fly left or right of intended destination, however this is not a problem because you will still go to your proper destination. The frame rate has never dropped on me, which says a lot compared to techlands older games.

    Quests and Story
The game starts pretty slow at first and makes you feel like the bad guy a few times, however a few hours in it gets a lot better. Side quests are plentiful. most are more than fetch quests and a lot of them give great rewards.

All and all the game is solid. Its a blast to play with friends and even alone. If you love zombie games then this game is a must.

Basically you have this city as your playground , to explore , kill dumb zombies, torture damn, play around with traps, climb around like a monkey searching new loot to build crazy weapons.

Partially true during daytime the zombie are dumb, but not all !!! make too much noise, and fast running aggressive ones will pop up chasing you and making you sweat.
Nightime everything becomes more deadly, and stealth apporach is needed to avoid über deadly monsters that can almost insta kill you.
Coop is great addition to the game.
Sure the story is pretty cheesy B movie style, but who cares.
The real fun from this game comes from your own situation you create .. the fun and crazy moments.

I can highly recommend this game, it's great fun and excellent coop.

I love this game the story is pretty awesome, and the night is so intense. I was reading reviews about people saying the movement isn't as fluent like climbing walls and free running, but if you look they wrote their reviews on day one. unless you have been playing since its midnight release till the time they wrote their reviews then i can bet they didn't build up their skill tree. onceI love this game the story is pretty awesome, and the night is so intense. I'm having a hard time surviving because you need metal parts to repair weapons and all mine are all broken. I'm not saying its hard to repair them but I have been having such an amazing time running and ducking from zombies, I haven't had time to find stuff to repair my weapons. Excellent game highly recommended. 4 of my friends from work got it and we have been having such a fun time on multiplayer. At night everyone is yelling cussing and laughing running from mutated zombies, haven't had this much fun playing multiplayer in forever. Expand

Dying Light is a fantastic way to start off game releases in 2015. What Dying Light does great is its parkour/free running traversal mechanics and abilities. I always found myself loving to run and navigate the rooftops and find crates with cartable items in them and so on. Being a fan of parkouresq gameplay and zombies this game was right up my ally for sure. Dying Light is easily one of the most gorgeous game I have ever seen.

The day / night cycle changes the game completely by making it easy and fun to traverse in the day time but absolutely terrifying at night. The night is when the real nightmare comes out. There are more terrifying and fast infected that hunt and listen to your every move. Making much sound at night signs your death sentence which adds to the game so much.

I was more than impressed with everything in this game, yet I found myself frustrated and upset with how it ended. Rather than ending with all the skills and experiences you've learned the last encounter with the main antagonist ends with a slew of quick time events that haven't even been exploited in the game until this very ending. I wanted the epic way to fight with Rais to be interesting and not just with a couple of button presses.

Finally, even though i was disappointed with the final "boss battle" it left us with a good ending and left it open to a possible sequel. I would love a sequel to this game and see Techland experiment more and give the main character more relatability and personality. I absolutely adore this game and it makes me excited for what 2015 has to come in Video Games.

A very solid game. Gameplay wise, it feels a lot like Dead Island. It's about 10x better though. You can't just walk into a horde while mashing your triggers and expect to kill them all. It's best to observe your surroundings and find a way around the zombies. The game looks really good. Like, really good.

This is a fantastic game. Story is excellent, graphics are stunning. My only problem I have is everyone keeps saying how this game is so much better than the Dead Island series but its not its on par with them there is no difference as far as concept. the Only difference is parkour.
