I recently played this game. For the most part I had a good time on the game, for me it was fun and after some practice I managed to get used to the parkour mechanics. I finished the game mostly because it was fun to play, but the story is plain and forgetable. Expand

The game doesn't deliver the greatest platforming experiences despite being focused around it. Most of the trophies have bugs or glitches. Late game human enemies are bullet sponges. There's a lot of inconsistencies where you can't platform certain things and are greeted with certain doom.

BUT I wanted the free DLC. I just wanted some additional content. Not for the fundamentals of the fuggin game to change. It was bad enough how hard the game is in the very beginning, but you couldnt change the difficulty. AT ALL. (unless you update) SO I get completely leveled up and Im enoying the game. I was getting towards the end of the story, so I decided to let the game update for the DLC. Now the ENTIRE damage system has been reworked. I could understand adding a higher difficulty, which they also did, but for the casual player...someone whos already got 102 fugging hours in the game, to so drastically change the way you have to play....its very frustrating. So now my options are 1) quit playing it and dont finish a game i have over 4 solid days in 2) accept it and try to finish a game im no longer really having fun with 3) Delete the whole thing and start completely over again. I think this is Techlands first major success and so maybe they are still things out, but this seems so amateur, and I simply cannot understand their though process. It will ABSOLUTELY make me thing long and hard about ever buying another Techland game. Expand

The system combat is a really nice feature,it s cool when you blow a zombie head,or when you electrocute them with your electric pipe. Congrats techland

However, the gameplay is very good. Whenever you are out in the world, you feel a sense of danger and when the night comes... oh boy, it gets really scary.

The parkour mechanics work really well. At some stage in the game, you feel like the spider-man.

The graphics feel a bit dated not many expressions on the characters faces and the dialogue is a bit silly in some occasions.

There's a lot of good in Dying Light. The first thing you'll notice is the music, which has a neat 80s synth aesthetic. The city is quite large and detailed, rendered in impressive graphics. And the mechanics go deep, as you'll know if you take a peek at the various skill trees available.

However, this game is such a grind before you get a proper foothold in the world that you may well get tired of the game before you reach that point. Earning experience is painstakingly slow, divided as it is across three initial categories before a fourth class opens up. I highly recommend finding tutorials to learn the nuaces of gameplay (which are manyfold) to maximize experience earning potential early on. This will save a lot of frustration. I appreciate that feeling underpowered for a large portion of the game makes the world feel deadly dangerous, but it's a bit overboard here.

But the final nail in the coffin is how gratingly annoying and badly written every single NPC is in this game. From cliched villains to cliched allies, to whiny fetch-quest givers, to unfunny and tedious blabbermouths, it's simply a chore to speak to anyone. The immersion of the game is killed three words into any conversation.

A more minor criticism is how samey the city feels. It's very easy to get lost because differentiating buildings or even cardinal directions is nearly impossible without the map.

This game requires a ton of patience to enjoy

Zombie games have flooded the market for quite a long time and still keep going today. To see Dying Light as "another zombie game" for me is a mixture of going through the motions and simply turning off my critique switch and just enjoying cathartic fun. It definitely is fun, there's a surprising amount of stuff to do in the zombified city of Harran. Parkouring over buildings and obstacles is very fun and its often overlooked nowadays in games where you have to glitch up the side of a mountain or building to get to your destination or have some sort of predetermined path to go on. Dying Light doesn't do this and instead allows you to freely explore the city at your own pace and progress.

So why would this game get a 7/10? I want to stress again, playing Dying Light is fun and I would consider a 7/10 a good game, but not a great one. There are significant problems with Techland's game that makes it difficult to praise it for what it lacks more in. The game can be incredibly buggy and enemy AIs can be underwhelming when reacting to your movements. The plot that the game focuses on is really cliche to the point it's cliche swiss cheese. Name a cliche point in a film or book or show, Dying Light has it, which is a shame because given the music is a 70s and 80s theme that placed emphasis on action over plot in the films at that time this game could have been far better. What I mean is the setting should've been the 70s/80s instead of modern day.

The durability system is fine, but the need to drop a weapon you like after running out of repairs can be very heartbreaking. The game does have a survival system in place to establish its rules on clearing out hordes and scavenging to survive, but many zombie games have done this to a far greater effect and as a consequence has only dulled the sense of enjoyment when scavenging the city. The repetition is quite taxing after the first few hours go by and the quests and missions you go
on don't really have much emotion or weight to them. They feel as interchangeable and deaf as the next one.

I like the enemy variety and the day/night cycle is a really great gamble for players to try to get more stuff at the cost of being killed easier on the surface, but the losses are so minor that it doesn't bother me because you don't lose the items you get, only experience. Later on the devs would update the game to make a mode that makes death more meaningful but really Dying Light doesn't make dying have any weight, rather it just spawns you back to your checkpoint area instead. The co-op is really nice, the dlc is underwhelming and weak, the pvp mode is bad and really the amount of fetch quests and backtracking can be really taxing for me to want to get back into for a second run.

Dying Light isn't bad by any means, but it had come in a point in time where zombie games were exploding with popularity and numerous titles that the game suffers almost from a identity crisis. It plays a safe way and doesn't try to be different, but can be enjoyable if you like something to do.

An immersive combat and weapon customization system successfully smooths over the cracks of an imperfect story in "Dying Light," Techland's much-improved spiritual successor to "Dead Island," where the parkour may be a bit cumbersome at times and the side quests might be a tad too monotonous for my tastes, but overall, the experience is nonetheless noteworthy and satisfying.

I have a core group of friends that I play with online and having put in about 8 hours into co-op campaign we were constantly reminding ourselves just how great of a job they've done.

The largest and most noticeable change is with the running mechanic which when comfortable with is done amazingly well! The night time fights and mini games are loads of fun and add an additional element to the game that I was a little leery about but now look forward to.

Hiccup free play online, great graphics, great soundtrack. Much like Dead Island, the atmosphere is top notch! If you're like me and like to play online with friends, this is a must have for you.

I agree with others, there should be more vehicle's in the game and I've noticed so far there are less weapons available for pickup than Dead Island but that just means a greater need for inventory/weapon management which I like.

Pick the game up, you'll like it!

However, Dying Light perfects most of its former self's weaknesses, by streamlining the gameplay and taking care of the buggy/glitchy mess that DI and Riptide were.

The biggest addition to the gameplay formula is the parkour movement, which seems blocky at first, steadily becomes fluid the more you upgrade your abilities. Another notable improvement is the story; which is much more compelling and is fleshed out pretty well by the main character's voice actor. (Whom did the voice for Resident Evil 5 and 6's Chris Redfield, so zombie fans will like that!!)

Overall, the campaign along with its side quests will take you some time to get through, as the areas you explore are large and take time to get between areas. Ironically, walking on foot doesn't get that boring, unlike its predecessor, which almost forced you into zombie hordes just getting point A to B. As for the quality of the campaign, it's okay, rate the story around a 7 in terms of writing.

Dying Light is worth your time, if you like zombie/apocalyptic action games, Mirrors Edge and Dead Island. Hope you enjoy it!

Dying Light is what Dead Island should have been. It's the game that Dead Island fans dreamed of if they liked Dead Island but thought it'd be better if it wasn't mediocre. Going off the same formula and streamlining certain elements while expanding on others, Dying Light is a zombie apocalypse heaven.

Jumping off from Dead Island and improving on it in every way, the gameplay is more streamlined and less clunky than the original, and movement in general feels a lot better. The new parkour system is just what the zombie genre needed, as it turns out. Adding free running elements lets you outpace the zombie hordes quickly and efficiently, and gives a new vertical element to gameplay, allowing you to scale up buildings and hop across rooftops. Despite its first person perspective, the parkour system in this game actually works really well, though of course sometimes it gets a little confused, as more than once I tried to grab onto a ledge and the game would space out and let me fall. Not that big of a deal when there's another ledge below it, but it's a pretty big one during the moments where you're hanging off 1000 story death drops and the parkour HAS to be accurate, though in those moments I have enough confidence in the engine to register all my movements and grab onto those ledges. And then you get a grappling hook later on in the game, letting you soar across rooftops and completely ignore gravity Rico Rodrigues style. Yes, please.

Like Dead Island, you have a plethora of options to choose from when it comes to zombie murder. The weapon crafting system returns, letting you create lightning machetes or flaming sledgehammers, or flaming lightning bladed sledgehammers. Weapon degradation is still a thing, but at least you can repair weapons out on the field instead of having to go to a workbench every time like in Dead Island. Besides, weapons are plentiful enough to where you don't ever get attached to any one weapon. Weapons in this game truly are just a means to an end. The guns are better in this game, as well. Shooting isn't a complete detriment anymore as the shooting controls are actually good this time around, letting you pop off zombie heads with ease, though guns for the most part are only used against the human enemies who also have guns, since there isn't enough ammo in the world to go into the zombies sticking purely with firearms.

Instead of multiple classes like Dead Island, you instead have a single character that has 3 skill trees offering different advantages that suit certain playstyles. A skill tree focusing on agility allows you to run faster, climb higher and evade the zombies easier, while also giving you tactical options on the field such as the ability to jump up over a zombie's head for a boost up and away from danger, or enhancing your parkour abilities with rolling recoveries. Another skill tree focusing on fighting ability, letting you slice, cleave, smash or crush your way through the zombie hordes, and give abilities like a head stomp that instantly kills downed enemies. A final skill tree focusing on straight survival, letting you last longer against your enemies in general, providing health buffs and regeneration, also letting you camouflage yourself with zombie guts, letting you pass through entire hordes completely unharmed. You can choose which skills you want to get as you go, but in the end you'll have enough skill points to get all of them anyway.

The story is better than Dead Island's that's for sure. It doesn't take itself quite as seriously as its predecessor did, and it helps that the characters have some excellent voice acting and writing behind them, though it's still not a really memorable story, going through cliches like a check list and having a weird Far Cry 3 moment where you're hallucinating in a drug trip because if Ubisoft did it, Techland has to do it too, apparently. Also the final boss is a quick-time event because of course it is.

Of course the USP of the game is the day-night cycle. During the day, the zombies are slow and clumsy and dumb, easily outmaneuvered or overpowered by the player. However, at night, things get much different, turning the hunter into the hunted as super zombies begin to prowl around. You don't stand a chance against these enemies, requiring you to avoid them until daylight. These zombies are fast, powerful, and can easily reach you even from full sprint and even from rooftops, as they can climb very quickly. You must be very quick and use your environment in order to outpace them if you're caught. However, the braver player will stick it out during the night, as you receive double XP in the dark. Zombie sandbox by day, survival horror by night. This dichotomy in Dying Light's gameplay is a very interesting one and is fun to play.

Dying Light is much more fun than its predecessor, and does a lot of things right. With a better story and expanded mechanics, Dying Light 2 could be a solid 10.

Dying Light is a really awesome open world zombie game with great graphics, gameplay (thanks to the parkour and fun open world), and has lots of replay value. Where it falls a bit short is in the story and voice acting, but it is definitely still worth your time if you enjoy zombie games.

Dying Light is the spiritual sequel of Dead Island (by the same studio) it had the ambition to be even better, but did they succeed in their enterprise ?

Technically the game is very good, with very beautiful graphics for early 2015, specially the light effects which is obvious thanks to the day/night cycle. Everything is detailed and you don't feel like the city was built using only a few models of building thanks to all those details. The animations are top notch too with great realistic feeling when you're running and such. Also it is important to point the lack of glitches (very rare in open worlds game) and the solid framerate even when there's a lot of zombies on the screen.

Concerning the gameplay we find everything we encountered in Dead Island : focus on melee fights, very important looting system and the use of mods to upgrade your weapon, the possibility to play in coop, an open world with a lot of side quests, and the introduction to modified zombies the further you progress in the game. But we also had the parkour abilities of our character which enhance all the trips you have to make in the city making a run in the rooftops equally fun to a brawl with zombies and the previously mentioned day/night cycle that introduce a new kind of gameplay (at night) when you're the prey of the strongest kind of zombies (who might be a player if your enable the option) that also allows new emotions. Those two additions make for a worthy (unofficial) sequel. The only downside is the repetitivity of the game, a flaw that plagues many open worlds and you won't encounter new situations during the second half of the game.

Concerning the story, it's pretty classic for a zombie outbreak with themes such as the search of a cure and the biggest threat being other humans. It won't win any prize but it's efficient and you can rely with the characters. The game also offers a lot of side quests and it's good to see that most have their own stories (a few of them are just request on a billboard) that makes them more interesting and you want to see them through, some will even impact your environment. If you want to finish the game at 100% you can expect more or less 30 hours of gameplay with 12 for the main campaign, it's in the good average for this kind of game.

In conclusion Dying Light improves on the Dead Island formula and it's without a doubt the best zombie game available for PS4, but it misses originality in its gameplay and its story to appeal for gamers that aren't interested in zombies. But if you like to smash the heads of the undead I definitively advise this game.

This game is more or less the same, vehicles are replaced by parkour, core gameplay remains the same with mostly melee combat, with loot used to find better weapons/ or to create items, throwables, medkits, etc. But It definitely feels like a sequel and is no Dead Island 1.5. Now, the story is just as generic as Dead Island (maybe more?), it really is cliche as a zombie story you can get. Now for the pros and cons of this game. The pros are the parkour of this game, it adds a fresh twist to the game and is generally fun, especially with the grappling hook. The general game play (open world, combat, graphics, looting/crating, etc) to me is good and fun, but everything is limited. You'll be using the same weapons throughout the game, just with stronger stats. The blueprints to create stronger weapons was also limited; its basically adding fire, electric, impact, and toxic; except they make it look like a lot by giving it different names for different classes of weapons. It gives the illusion of tons of blueprints to collect, when there aren't. This is definitely not Dead Rising when it comes to crafting weapons, its like a watered down version of it. The worst part of this game is probably the side quests, the majority of side content are either unrewarding, a grind, or copy and paste of each other. However protection quests are fun, challenging, and rewarding, and clearing safe houses are also fun. Overall good core game play, with a lot of so-so elements added to it. To recap the good: The Parkour, general game play. The Bad: Cliche Zombie story and grindy/ unrewarding side quests. When it comes down to it, I can't recommend this game to everyone as it can get repetitive like Dead Island, but guaranteed anyone who enjoyed Dead Island WILL enjoy this game just as much, if not more. The world of Harran is beautifully designed and is your playground to manouevre in. The day and night cycle is great and is a great contrast from being the hunter during the day to the hunted during the night when deadly volatiles lurk about. The encounters at night are tense and you do feel a sense of vulnerability. The upgrade system is very rewarding as well and crafting your zombie slaying weapons is great. I have one gripe with game and its the large amount of side missions which, are often repetitive and tedious (I don't want to retrieve another thing from a store surrounded by zombies.) You do find that you are often an errand boy during these side missions. Aside from that a worthy purchase with a superb 80's influenced horror soundtrack. Expand

Gameplay- This where it shines, Dying Light provides immense opportunities to forge grand weapons and claim ultimate power over the zombies. The early game of running away with sparse combat later turns into a "revenge" upon them for all of those med kits the used up earlier. Additionally the parkour is fun, while also being a bit nauseating at first, becomes a pleasure later.
My score of 8/10 stems not from the games story, but the intense and satisfying gameplay that kept me coming back to the game, even after 1 year.

Dying Light is the funnest game I've played in a long time. When I read about the odd placement of the jump button, I had thought it would take some getting use to, but it was very easy to adapt to, and with the parkour elements, it's placement was understandably necessary.

For me, though, this game's winning feature was the gore. As a gore hound, this game made me feel like a vampire bathing in a blood fountain during a blood moon lol. Splitting zombies apart every which-way was satisfying. The variety of weapons is great, as well as the traps, crafting, and parkour - which is just as well done as the Assassin's Creed games, though a little more difficult due to the first person view.

If it had a downside, it would 2 minor glitches, one involving securing a specific safe house, and the enemies you are required to kill appear on the map and radar, but not in-game. This is fixed by exiting the game and continuing. The second glitch involves failing or restarting challenges, occasionally the character will "float away", but it's fixed by hitting the jump button. Other than these two minor glitches, I haven't experienced any other issues.

The graphics are great, the environmental graphics are slightly better than face graphics, but it's up to par with other games on the PS4. Lastly, I don't have the best internet connection because I've foolishly gone wireless, but despite that, I've experienced only a few rare disconnects while playing co-op with a friend online. I did not notice any lag, however. It's a great game, and I highly recommend it. I've purchased "The Following" DLC, but have not touched it yet. I'll review it when I do. Until then, this game gets a 10/10 from me.

    Not just another zombie game
dying light is an open world rpg style game from the developer of the original dead island and it shows
dead island is very cartoony compared to the more mature toned Dying Light
This is a much grittier game that takes itself much more seriously
you’re an undercover agent named Kyle Crane sent to infiltrate a quarantine zone
as soon as you get there you see that the place is crawling with zombies and other survivors
    you’re instantly bit and infected
you’re rescued by a woman named jade and she takes you back to the tower because she trusts you can help the remaining survivors,
And to get into their good graces this is exactly what you do..
    You’re an errand boy...
you do all of the tough tasks that others are afraid or too weak to do...
As soon as you’re healed up you’re taught how to do parkour and this unlike in Dead Island gives you the opportunity to travel through the roof tops assassins’ creed style….
Unfortunately though, the parquor system isn’t the greatest….
There is no flow to it, and this lack of flow really stands out towards the end that I won’t show to prevent spoiler, but unlike in assassins creed, if you don’t stop before you make a leap, your character is going to do a half jump and fall to his death,
This no flow needs fixed for a sequel, and please let us climb down…
jumping down while I grab ledges is a little too risky for my taste…
awkward parquor asside, I was in love with the game for the first few hours, I loved exploring the city and scavenging for weapons and items to craft better weapons but dying light is missing the magic dead island had for me
While dying light is the 2nd most believable zombie games I’ve played since the last of us,
nothing about this world feels real or previously lived in… the world in dying light feels insanely generic
There’s no moments, unless I overlooked them where you see a zombie stuck in the loop of a past life
sure some will be locked in the bathroom in houses but they just feel like a gamey jump scare not like they belong there..not like they once lived in the house youre going through
There is no human left in these zombies, ultimately turning them into a nuisance rather than a victim of their circumstances like dead island or even tell tales the walking dead does near perfectly
It would’ve been so much better for the tone they set out to hit if there was a dilemma or struggle to kill
Maybe if it were more about panicking humans than just a bunch of zombies…
Because this really is just completing tasks while zombies bother you
    that’s it
    And it’s a shame…
Theres so much potential here and it becomes repetitive too fast
I was so impressed with how difficult the zombies seemed in this game.. id try my hardest to avoid conflict with them, even with insanely powerful weapons…
There are random side quests and side activities that pop up on the screen where you can help survivors or take supplies from the rival gang..
You can even use the zombies to attack rival enemies for you by throwing fire crackers to attract them, or just getting them to chase you..
Helping npcs, climbing buildings, and killing enemies all level up a different skills,
You have a survivor, agility, and and power skill tree,
Leveling up can get you awesome perks like added health, learning how to use traps in the city, taking less damage from falls.. and at night all of your xp earned is double..
    Except for one little problem
At night zombies are on steroids especially the volatiles
The zombies at night are fast, powerful, they can climb and chase after you,
It’s a thrill to try and make it to a safe spot before you’re killed and sleep til morning
Or you can stay out at night and test your luck…
About 50 percent of the way through the story though dying light kind of turns into more of a first person shooter and this is really where the game starts to fall apart..
I was so happy thinking, they got it right this time.. one giant city for me to explore.. they didn’t make the dead island mistake of making me go to different places
    Wrong
In the back of my mind while playing I was thinking..
If they dare send me to the sewers like every zombie game in existence does…
    and guess what
    they did….
Just like in Dead Island they send you through the sewers and you end up in what I’m convinced is the exact same place you end up in in Dead Island... I definitely got smacked with some dejavu

Love this game! Beautiful graphics, very little glitches (and when they do occur it is funny, not frustrating), kept me entertained, and is actually scary at times (especially at night). I wanted this game to continue and continue and never end. The story line kept me engaged and I just wanted to keep learning about the characters and do more missions. Highly recommend this game.

Dying Light although flawed in some ways is one of the most fun and terrifying gaming experiences I've had in a long time. Many will remember that Techland the developer behind Dying Light was also responsible for Dead Island, another open world zombie game from a few years ago. Although I really enjoyed Dead Island at first I found it became boring and I never ended up finishing the game. Techland has said that Dying Light is the game that Dead Island should have been and I couldn't agree more. I've read a lot of user opinions that expressed concern that this would be another Dead Island and I'm happy to say that although they share similarities Dying Light clearly stands above. The basic story of Dying Light is that the city of Harran has fallen victim to a virus and you are sent in to receive intel. Although the story isn't perfect and there are some typical cliche plot lines I enjoyed the story compared to a lot of reviewers. Roger Craig Smith the voice behind Kyle Crane (the main character) does a fantastic job. Gamers will remember him most notably as Chris Redfield from Resident Evil. I found myself thinking exactly how he would respond before he would in situations and this added to my compassion of his situation and the characters around him.

Now I stated that this game is both fun and terrifying both of which are reasons I enjoyed playing so much. During the initial stages of the game the player is "weak" before he has undergone many upgrades to each of his three abilities trees (more on that later). This means that when thrown into the thick of things your best option is to run and to do it during the day. This is where the "parkour" style of the game similar to Mirror's Edge gives players the upper hand against the hordes of zombies. Even when not trying to avoid the enemies I found myself taking the high road, climbing from building to building to building. This is fun game to explore and I hope that if there is a Dying Light 2 this aspect is expanded upon. The best part of all the climbing and jumping is that as you do it you gain experience in the Agility tree and for each level you can choose a skill to expand upon such as a Drop Kick, Slide and many others. This further entices you to take the road less traveled as you try to gain every ability.

Sometimes however you can't always run and that's when it's time fight. Dying Light offers a few different melee weapons such as machetes, baseball bats, and hatchets among others in addition to a few different guns. Melee weapons are found randomly with differing attributes and can also be upgraded to improve their damage, handling and durability as well as add unique effects like fire or electricity. As the player gets stronger so do the weapons that can be found and this, in addition to weapons breaking over time, means you're constantly keeping a few on hand and changing weapons as you progress. I never found this to be too annoying and Techland did a great job of keeping the system balanced so it never became an annoyance, just another factor to deal with. As you fight you gain experience in the Power skill tree which grants you different abilities like a 360 degree attack or slashing down at enemies as you jump down upon them. Like the agility tree, you'll want to upgrade this tree as well and you'll be forced to do so at certain point whether you want to or not.

The last skill tree (available from the start) is the survivor skill tree, which is advanced by completing main and side story missions as well as helping random encounters throughout the game or by picking up airdrops. Abilities include traps and allowing the player to expand their inventory storage. This tree can only be fully completed by seeking out all the side missions in the game which are plentiful. From a completionist stand point you'll want to complete these as you go as the the amount of experience gained is relative to the point in the game at which you receive the mission. Alternately you can always return to these missions once you complete the game so there is never a need to complete them immediately.

The last part of the game experience is the terrifying aspect. Now this will vary from person to person to point that I've heard of some people being unable to play the game. I find that to be a little extreme and for me it was more of a exercise in anxiety control especially when you venture out a night. The game rewards you for this though with double experience point to the agility and power tree, however there are stronger enemies about and vision is obviously more limited. Without spoiling anything let me just say that the night can be a little terrifying in the early stages of the game however by the mid point I wanted to explore the darkness just for the extra thrill.

All in all I really enjoyed Dying Light and I would highly recommend it if you enjoy any combination of parkour, zombies or open world games.

The addition of buggy which handles very well that has weapons such as a flame thrower and can also be driven in coop. 2.The additions of new hand held weapons such as a cross bow and sub machine gun. 3.A larger map almost twice the size of the original which was generous and adequate in size in the main game as it was. The game & movement mechanics are FLUENT and FLAWLESS. Only 2 hours into The FOLLOWING and I can see many FUN FILLED HOURS AHEAD especially in coop as there's even more FUN & FRIGHTS to be had. As for the environment, I found dead island far more interesting, colourful and varied, and to be honest I enjoyed the game more. The enemies in dying light are boring and seem to have had little to no effort put into their design...they're just grey.

All in all I think this game was poorly put together, the voice acting and gameplay make it seem like a rush job, along with the unnecessarily fiddly controls (going against the tried and tested button layouts never pays off.) I didn't enjoy this as much as dead island.

The game was a nice experience, but the originality is missing. The movement is smooth and the parkour is fun, but the game itself is mediocre. I would like to give a 7.0, but the night and day modes bring to the game a suitable freshness.

A promising game with so many good things about it, but the fact of the matter is that some truly awful game design, some painfully cliched characters/writing, and a raft of infuriating bugs make this a case of what could have been. On top of the game being dumb fun, the most fascinating thing to me is just how impressive Dying Light is on a technical level. Sure, graphically the game is nice enough(mainly because of some pretty lighting), but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about there being close to 100 zombies on screen at once(including big ones that throw cars),being able to go in and out of like a thousand random buildings, and how big the map is. I also think the game has a really cool soundtrack. All in all a great game top to bottom, sure the story is pretty average but that's not even that bad considering the game doesn't need a great story and this story isn't bad at all just nothing to get excited about. If you have the time I strongly recommend you play this and ignore the mixed reviews. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. At the time of release, I didn't really know much about the game or what incentive there would be to buy it. I ignored it, thinking it was an indie game (due to a huge lack of marketing in my area). Several months later, my next door neighbour bought the game and I had a playthrough. I was shocked by how brilliant the game was. i only played the first mission, but in that I already knew who the main characters were, as the game has an excellent way of telling the story. So I bought the game just before my birthday, and I've now played through the entire game. I will go through the story (there is one, and a pretty good one) the positives, and anything that could be improved on in the future.

You start the game with a cutscene that explains about the crysis happening in Haraan, a small Turkish town which has been put under quarentine by the UN (best zombie apocolypse handling ever) and you are playing as a field agent used to salvage documents for your higher collective. You are Kyle Crane, an American male voiced by Roger Craig Smith (voice of Ezio from AC, Batman in Arkham Origins and the new Sonic) as you are airdropped right into the middle of the slums. You fall onto a light trap and badly injure yourself before being rescued by the runners of the Tower (your home base) and are patched up and welcomed to surprisingly open arms. Partly because you are nigh-on immune to the virus.

You quickly meet the main group of characters: Rahim; a young and daring ambitious parkour specialist (who looks like the main character from Pyschonauts), Jade; a famous local kickboxer who is aesthetically stunning but also quite fiesty (cliched, kind of) and Brecken, the leader of the Tower (and also the guy from the trailer) who sounds and acts exctly like Jason Statham. Rahim gives you a quick parkour training where you soon impress (if you are good at the game) and are used to do shifts for the people of the tower.

The main story is: Keep the Tower up on their Antizin intake (which isn't an actual mechanic in the game, which I wish would be) and either scavange from airdrops / buy from Rais (bad idea) and help Dr. Zere in his research to find a cure. The deals with Rais go **** up so you are forced into a Civil war of sorts with his men. As with Zere, he asks you to fight through the old disheveled parts of town to Dr. Camden, his co-worker. Not gonna spoil too much more, so you can play the game yourself.

Pros include: There is a massive emphasis on realism and immersion. The game's amazing audio and vibe allow this with precision, especially early in the game where you are beating off zombies with nailed sticks. The zombies are graphically detailed and their AI is (mostly) well made. With the first person element, you feel like you are really Kyle Crane and you are really in a fight for survival. The protagonists are so well acted, I could see Crane's voice actor picking up awards for this year where voice acting has really not been strong. The open world is incredibly beautiful and feels more next-gen than 90% of next-gen games. The game is beautifully crafted and the art style is utterly superb, and when it turns to night, it holds this with its gritty dark tone that makes the dark something to be feared.

The gameplay is incredible. The dynamic parkour and the environment go hand in hand in a beautiful display which feels like heaven if you've just finished playing Cod. This really helps both at day and at night, in every situation. The combat feels like a massive improvement from Dead Island is gets even better when you move further down the skill tree. It gives the gain replayability when it is this fun to bash zombie's brains in. How ironic.

Now for the negatives. It is best said that the cliches could drive a nitpicker round the bend, especially with all of the comparisons to Far Cry. The antagonist is very flimsily portrayed, who rightly is just a Turkish Vaas knock-off. Turkey are 'good' on their knock-offs. Also, the AI can be laughable at times, mainly with Rais's men and grounded zombies, especially with the voice queues. Unfair to say, they weren't given that good a script. Said script which makes half of the characters in the game unlikable. The character models on most NPCs are the same and are similar to that of the Marines in Halo: CE. It doesn't help when most character have the same body language besides the ones that have had effort given to them. And finally, the online. It may be good in co-op, but Be the Zombie is pretty damned broken. Just stick to the main game.

I played this game almost fully on my own, so my experiences are from playing alone. My experience: the game is brilliant. This is possibly the best zombie game ever in terms of immersion and playability. I love this game, it is some of the most fun I've had in a single player game. One problem though: When you run out of missions, it gets boring quickly. Very quickly. I give this game a 9/10 on the fact that it plays so damn well.

The EPIC LAST LEVEL BOSS FIGHT is a dungeon where you run from point A to point B and then end it with a 7 button quick time even. Straight garbage. Then there's the DLC. You can't even call it DLC, it's two sidequests made to last hours. Buy the game, skip the DLC, stop playing once you've finished the story. Good incipit, but the story gets boring very fast. Within the first 30 minutes of gameplay you realise that the story starts to smack of “been there, done that”.
There are a bunch of very interesting cues: the safe areas, the crafting system, and the overall idea of an open world zombie setting. Despite that the plot gets shabby pretty soon, leaving a bad taste of wasted opportunity.

Playing at night is really hard and requires a lot of skill, knowledge of the map and, of course, luck. I myself avoided playing at night, because it's nearly impossible. The devs did not lie when they said people would be frightened to play in the night.

The parkour works surprisingly well, it's fluid, it's intuitive and it's easy to jump from roof to roof, climb things and so on. Again, if you know the map well I guess you can do impressive things, win a lot of time and avoid the zombies better.

The graphics are beautifull, it's a true current gen game.

What I didn't like in this game was the fact that in the final missions it's too easy to avoid combat with the zombies, all you need to do is run, which is very frustrating and erases the difficulty of the game. Also, the final boss is defeated in a QTE sequence, which is very, very lame.

Also, I found the story very stupid and childish.

All in all it's a great game and a must have for every PS4 owner.

I could go on, but you get the idea. Gameplay, great. The drop kick alone was about the most fun I've ever had in a three second span in a game. A few minor and personal gripes were the lack of gun variety (and a useless shotgun), the absurd weapon scaling (my machete does twenty times the damage of a lead pipe for example), and the maps felt a bit small for my tastes. But that didn't deter me from really enjoying the hell out of this side of the game.

If I were rating the story alone this game would be in the red. I'm a story drive gamer, so this was important for me. The first three-fourths of the game were fine if bland, but about that three-fourths mark I ran into one of the most idiotic scenes I've encountered in a game. You have to be careful when using the damsel in distress dynamic, and this game botched it hard. They set up no real relationship between you and the woman in question beyond a few passing sentences so I didn't feel attached to her. She was also supposed to be a bad-ass so making her the damsel felt like a betrayal of her character. Though groaning, I dealt with this. It really died with the five minute over-the-top sappy diatribe that was so bad I found myself scowling on my couch. It was ridiculously dramatic. You were transported to a Dishonored style Limbo (apparently this is what turning into a zombie is like) and you chased her ghost while she was pelting you with the most droning self-sacrifice speech you've ever heard. This scene totally killed any investment I had in the story which really depletes my enjoyment of a game, but I persevered because of drop-kicking zombies.

A bonus crime this game committed was the climax. I really enjoyed the climbing part of it and the combat even if I had to listen to Mr. Generic Villain 101 monologuing at me. Crane's motivation in the game at this point was all about revenge which made me dislike him as a character. Seriously, a woman you barely knew died dramatically, but so did a doctor I'd talked to just as much and I wasn't harping about him. And aren't there, like, a thousand other innocent people to save? ...Just dumb writing... Anyway, I reach the putz expecting some lame boss fight like the last two but instead, they end the game with the only quick-time even in the entire game. Yup, quick time event. That's they best they could do with their villain.

    There. I've ranted.

During the day you will explore the city in search of provisions and weapons. When the night falls, however, this troubled world undergoes a dramatic transformation that gives the gameplay a new dimension. You, as a hunter by day, become the hunted. The infected increase their strength, but something more sinister lurks in the dark to begin its prowl.

I wasn't expecting the game to be so good and intense at times due to the critics reviews. you get hooked to the controller for like 5 6 hours when you start. Nice graphics, I like how the ruined city with biters walking around is created. Good gameplay and the progression of the character, so you can't do everything from the start. you are somehow forced to do the side missions to increase your skills to be able to pass some story missions which is smart from my point of view, good variety of weapons. i don't give it a 9 or 10 as I've seen better games and it is a degree of repetitiveness in some areas, like things you find in trunks. Another fact that I somehow don't like is a timing issue let's say. Example: you have this mission which sound so urgent and you have to go immediately in a certain place, but actually you can do all the side missions including bringing crayons to children during a span of 4 5 game days and then go to the urgent place. It kind of loses first impact you get from the game, impact you get in first missions when there is no side mission. The controls can't be fully changed so you have to get used with those, and if you played many shooters lately with other controls you feel this issue in some moments in the game Expand

    Love it!
I think Dying Light is the best coop-multiplayer game in PS4 so far. Finished the game with a friend playing from different country with slower internet. The connection is good enough to play.
I will definitely get the expansions / next sequels if there are any.
I'm just hoping, for improvements, the dialogues are more designed, somewhat like Witcher 3.

One of the best games I have ever played.
    Graphics are top notch.
Gameplay is fun and varied (most varied ever in a zombie game)
Sounds are great and the use of the controller speaker is fantastic and spot-on.
    Parkour system has minor issues.
Otherwise, game is perfect. For completionists, it's a fun 50 hour game, without considering online...

A slightly better version of Dead Island in everything but name. [Apr 2015, p.84]

With some crazy fun online elements and a badass sense of actual achievement, Dying Light is the zombie game we've been working for. Just mute those terrible voices. [Issue#254, p.64]

It's not perfect, but Dying Light is last, brutal and most importantly, fun. [April 2015, p74]
