Great graphics, Great gameplay, blood, guns, demons, no story. It is a Doom game. If you are looking for anything else you will be disappointed. Everything is updated for modern times but the original formula is there. Have not tried multiplayer yet, but if it is any good it will be icing on the cake. If you are playing s game for multiplayer try call of duty.

Also nice to have finally 60fps and 1080p on consoles in a top game. Also great to have a game without the needless story telling that has become standard in modern games. If you come up with a story with the quality of Witcher 3 than a story is worth telling. But most games and shooters dont get close to such a high level. So than skip the entire story telling. I dont want to watch the needless movies that only interrupt gameplay. I think Bethesda really did a great job here. Graphics are great. Gameplay is great. And I also liked the diffculty levels. I grew up as a PC gamer with keyboard and mouse. This was my first shooter with a controller. But the low difficult setting is perfect. Difficult enough to be challenging. But not so difficult that I want the mouse back. Perfect balance. Like any game DOOM des have negative points. But they are small. Forst of all the gameplay is sometimes interrupted by seeking way to long to enter new environments or find keys. Especially in a game like this that downgrades the gameplay. And the background music of the game could have been much better. The game could also have a more fear in it.. But the addictive fast shooting experience eliminates th negative aspects. Bethesda did a good job here. Better than I expected to be honest. Expand

With all these reviews about the "frenetic gameplay", I'm wondering if they played the same game as I. There are *periods* of frenetic firefights, bursts of rapid run-and-gun killing, but then there's also long stretches of boring hallway walking with only a handful of enemies around. Exploration is a snoozefest and, outside of the BFG, most of the weapons are simply unremarkable. You WILL get tired of Glory Kills before you're done with the first chapter and yet, when playing on Ultra-Violent, constantly performing them is a necessity (for health and the like), thus devolving into a constant shoot-stun-glory kill routine over and over for the duration of the game. The campaign is painfully short; with finding about 70% of the collectibles, beating the game took only 10 hours, and far too much of that was spent looking at loading screens. Campaign is also lacking in spirit - looking back I can't really identify as single "holy s**t, did you see that?!" moments. Graphically the game is neither good nor bad. It, too, is average. I guess the best compliment I can give it is that it runs smooth most of the time with only the very rare frame drop during hectic sequences.

With little reason to replay the campaign, I turned to multiplayer. What I found there is a tacked on mess of a game that won't appeal to many over the long term. There's nothing in multiplayer to distinguish Doom from the myriad of other sci-fi shooters in the genre. It will likely keep some players for a week or so but they'll go back to their FPS's of choice very soon.

The shining gem of this reboot is Snapmap - the gory version of Super Mario Maker for Doomheads, if you will. This is what will ultimately give Doom any sort of longevity but the problem is waiting for a decent variety and amount of levels to become available through the community. Right now, being new, Snapmap is only good for those people who want to dabble around with level design.

The game is a solid rental but not worth the $60 price of ownership UNLESS you're hardcore into building levels through Snapmap. The best (and worst) of the campaign can be seen through a two day Redbox rental and multiplayer is best left to other games. I'd recommend waiting to buy it until it's cheaper and the community has had time to learn the Snapmap functions and create a decent amount of user based levels.

Doom 3, for better or worse, tried to evolve Doom and after Wolfenstein TNO I hoped Doom 4 would follow its example. That did not happen.

This Doom is pretty much 100% a retread of the original Doom formula and thats great if that is what your just looking for in Doom, but I expected more after nearly 10 years of waiting since Doom 3.

Still a great game, but definitely a solid 8/10.

Hopefully, Id will take more risks next time.

Side note, please dont buy the season pass, its just for multiplayer dlc. The multiplayer is ok, but definitely not worthy of a season pass for $39.99...

Doom 2016 understands the most important thing about videogames: fun. And what does it do that makes it so fun to play?: GAMEPLAY. The controls on this game are PERFECT. They respond so precisely, so quick, they feel so natural. Doom 2016 does not care about the modern standarization of FPS's, there is no such thing as a regenerating health: if you want to recover HP, you need to find medipacks spread across the map, or man up and defeat your enemies for a health drop. Cornering away and shooting enemies from afar will not get you far in this game, specially on the later stages, where the amount of enemies on screen is RIDICULOUS, and not a single frame drop on my whole playthrough.

Also, the chainsaw: an insta kill (on limited amounts, of course) to any enemy. When cut in half with the chainsaw, enemies drop ammunition, so your carnage of lead and bullets continues, this balance between insane amounts of action and shooting never stops, and even if you run out of ammo, with a simple cut of the chainsaw the action goes on, giving this shooter an unstopable pace, no moment feels dull or boring, its action from beggining to end, not even the story makes a halt to the fun experience: as it almost non existant: the plot may very well be resumed like this: the gates of hell are open, demons sprawl on mars, go ahead and kill them all. That's it: there's almost nothing to spoil, nothing to tell, and it feels so refreshing.

I just cant stress enough how good and fun of a shoter Doom 2016 is, and if you're fan of the FPS genre, you own yourself to play this.

It's crazy and hectic but absolutely fun. I haven't had this much joy playing a shooter in over 15 years. The visuals have a unique art direction, but the soundtrack is the true winner here - absolutely memorable making your heart-beat at every match-up. The only negative side is that the multiplayer is unbalanced and feels like an afterthought. I would have preferred some kind of campaign co-op instead. Overall: Doom is everything I would love from a shooter that gives nostalgia its name in the best possible way. Expand

I found myself collecting upgrade tokens and then not really caring how I spent them on the suit. There could have been at least a few regular cutscenes too, to make the storyline a bit more inspiring.

I haven't played the original Doom, so can't compare, but if you like first person shooters then the chances are you'll enjoy this one a lot.

However, after a few decades of shooters, the shooting for the sake of shooting isn’t enough anymore. Doom (2016) does little more than drop enemies into the area, require the player to kill all of them, and then open a path to rinse and repeat. Some games have a relentless momentum like Halo: CE to Reach. In this games, you and decide strategically how to deal with enemies or blast past them if you want to. Even in a grindfest like Destiny, you can find the fastest path. Not so in Doom. You have to run and gun in small arenas until all the enemies are dead. Only then can you proceed.

Storywise, the game has little. I did appreciate the story being told from the 1st person perspective like Half-Life. I just want more story. Maybe I want more personality. There are no sense of stakes and no one to care about. Everything takes place on Mars or in Hell. So what if Mars becomes a gateway to Hell? The demons don’t have spaceships. Can’t the humans just nuke them?

All in all, Doom (2016) is a polished game that offers some fun, old school gameplay. I would have liked to have seen more from it, but I appreciate the effort that Bethesda put into what they offered. The game is on the high side of 7.

Besides shooting, the game also has some platforming and exploring. The levels are very well put together, so jumping around and exploring every corner not only adds playtime, but it is fun as well. I didn't find even half of the secrets (maybe like 30% secrets, 10% collectibles), but it still was satisfying whenever I found one.

The music also compliments the game well. It is metal and gives more agency to the fights.

The game does have some flaws though. First off, there were some glitches, specifically when enemies don't spawn. This forced me to reload my game twice. Secondly, the game struggles in long play sessions. It gets a bit too repetitive, especially in the second half when there are less new enemies, locations and guns. And finally, the multiplayer is fun but nothing special.

Honestly, the only minor complaints I have, have nothing to do with the core game (which is the single-player campaign):
    1. The classic maps, once unlocked can only be played separately - so you don't keep your progression from one map to the next. And also you cannot save during a map, so get ready to be raped by Pinky demons in tight corridors a lot.
    2. Multiplayer tries to borrow some elements from 'modern' multiplayer games, such as weapon load-out with 2 pre-selected weapons. And you cannot pick new weapons during the match, unlike the old-school multiplayer matches
    3. Snap-map does not seem to have the support they initially intended, like proper matchmaking and map-ranking, etc... which is bad because it is an awesome tool!

An almost perfect game, which EVERYONE should experience.

Good reboot of the doom games. Captures the combat intensity of the classic games but brings the series up to speed with modern mechanics and technology. Upgrading equipment is a lot of fun. Combat can get a bit tedious since there isn't much to break up the shooting aspect of the game. I also wish there were more narrow spaces and hallways like the original games had.

I started out not really liking it though cos I wasnt used to the Glory Kill and ammo/life/armor pickup system of old. So used to health regen that I forgot my 90s roots! Also, I kinda rushed from mission 1-5 at first and that made the game felt easy and pointless.

My opinion and experience changed however when it slowly grew on me and I did a new playthrough, but this time paying close attention to everything the game has to offer.

If u want the best Doom 2016 experience, TAKE YOUR TIME (ironically since it's so fast paced), and EXPLORE. The mission challenges, weapon upgrade challenges, rune upgrade challenges improves the gunplay to PERFECTION.

Those optional mechanics made me feel the huge variety of gameplay and gunplay Doom has on offer, and it isnt just a game of point and shoot. The challenges made me vary my playstyle and using every single gun, not just shotgunning my way through. This resulted in the most fun i've had in an FPS since Destiny.

Second thing I loved about Doom is the Secrets. I had fun hunting down every single mission collectible and secret locations. Its also rewarding as it gives u early access to powerful guns, much needed ammo/armor, extra lore, classic playable Doom maps and fun mini collectibles. Very satisfying and rewarding.

Bosses are super cool, I had an amazing time beating them at "Hurt Me Plenty" difficulty. I cant imagine going thru all that in Ultimate nightmare. Insane!

All in all, Doom 2016 delivered an experience so visceral, fun, simple yet engaging, that this has to be my shooter of the year for 2016.

Destiny still ranks as top dog in my list, but wow is Doom a close second.

(pun intended) The campaign runs around 8 - 10 hrs and with rune challenges and actual classic DOOM levels ( there is even a match 3 DOOM game in the game...) it will beef it up quite a bit. Expand

Doom honors its legacy while setting the stage for a new era for the long dormant franchise. Intimately gory encounters and a surprising emphasis on story more than make up for the bland multiplayer.

Exactly the right amount of old and new, DOOM is an adrenaline rush that borders on overwhelming in the best possible way.

Doom's shimmering, bombastic combat is as absorbing as it is revelatory. [Aug 2016, p.100]
