This is a must get game and I can't undersatnd how some of these reviews by critics are so low?

This game is abnormally epic. It is plainly obvious that Bethesda put their heart and soul into perfecting this game. From the moment I started it, I couldn't put it down. Graphics are beautiful. Gameplay is silky smooth, and tons of new ways to wreck face. Not to mention all the secrets and Easter eggs. I will have no life for a while because I will be playing this bad boy. Well done Bethesda!

Addicted to this kind of game play.... I love fast action games like this, obviously like other kinds of games. But for a fast paced shooter this is fantastic. Really loving the single player campaign!

Then there's the snap map editor, which feels a bit limited but has already spawned a number of creative fun levels for boh solo and coop play. The multiplayer feels a bit unbalanced at times but I still enjoy it, it's sort of a mix of halo and unreal tournament, rather or not you the reader will enjoy it depends on your feelings for those games. I highly suggest this game and the only thing I'd advice to be weary of is buying it for solely the multiplayer. Expand

But the Devil's a back-stabbing prick and Mars' UAC facility is now a blood-soaked den of evil. Demons and undead fiends stalk the formerly pristine hallways while the greater envoys of Hell plan to expand their territory and engulf the solar system in blood and despair. However, the demons aren't the deadliest thing roaming Mars. Driven by the oldest, purest hate but sporting an arsenal of devastating futuristic weaponry, Doomguy returns to show both the demons and the FPS genre how to do **** right. Forget about deliberate pacing, regenerating shields, or cover-based combat; everything here is a hyper-kinetic orgy of gore, guns, and unparalleled badassness. Unfortunately, Doomguy's staggering speed and prowess occasionally results in enemies getting left too far in the dust and breaking the pace of the combat. You'll zip through battle blowing apart demons so fast that you'll often be left waiting for the game to catch up and spawn more enemies. It also doesn't help that the game relies a little too much on combat arenas that lock you in a location and don't let you progress until you've wiped out several cumbersome waves of enemies. When these arenas are large enough, and most of them are, then this isn't a problem. But it definitely is a large blow against a modern game with old-school stylings to allow itself to become too formulaic, regardless of how exhilarating it all is. Thankfully, everything outside of the combat measures up amazingly well. The level design is slick, atmospheric, and always allows a lot of room for exploration which is necessary if you want to find the excellent weapon mods and power-ups which add a significant boost to the already exciting combat. Guiding the action is a surprisingly well-written story about betrayal and revenge which never impedes the gameplay and gives both Doomguy and the player the perfect motivation for wanting to plunge headlong into a fray of demons with a roaring chainsaw. Welcome to Doom. Expand

Roughly 4-5 hours of campaign n the rest I have been digging into multi and snap mode. as for the campaign mode the game is generally a re-imagined version of old dooms. There are not any horror aspects into it, no dark rooms, no flash lights whatsoever and generally there is no trace of doom 3 visible in solo experience. This can be a good thing or a bad thing based on your own preferences. The single player mode is basically within the idea of kill and proceed. It starts very slow in early levels and it goes beyond your expectations in terms of its speed and pace in future levels. the action is awesome and you can feel the survival in it. The glory kills are nice addition to the game as well and they are totally optional. The additional violence in comparison to doom 3 is a welcome feature which adds more excitement and breath taking moments . Each level has a good area design in terms of depth and size and it is designed in a way that you can hover around and battle with demons based on your strategies. Fortunately loading are short enough and check points and reasonable as well. There are explorations involved in the levels as well if you interested to go after secrets and collectibles. Another nice addition is guns and the variety of upgrades available for them as well as you suit. The upgrade tokens can be earned through given challenged in each level which is a very nice addition to the game-play and you can feel how powerful you slowly become through out the campaign mode. as for always demon designs and boss fights are amazing as they have always been. In terms of visual, PS4 version has a smooth 60fps performance, visuals are good but they are not anything beyond "good" . based on the level of difficulty the single player can take anywhere from 8 to 13 hours.
The second part is multiplayer. Perhaps its the biggest let down because it has no addition and innovation in comparison to other games. HAving demon mode its a nice addition to overall pace of the game but its nothing spectacular. modes are pretty standards, map are OK and enough, tones of untouchables as well. at this stage provided that it might become boring after a while i am not sure going for season pass is a good idea !
Next stop is snapmode which i believe many have been waiting for. sadly it comes wit so much disappointment and lack of variety in it. one thing is that you can make hell levels which is a huge disappointment. but there is actually enough depth within its limits in order to build things and download them from the share hub (does not requires ps plus unless u wanna connect and coop or share your maps) and extend your solo experience. But obviously we have 2 wait for more than 1-2 week to see true potential of the snap mode based on user created maps.
Overall i can say DOOM package worth your money if you are into a complete action packed game. But if you have been waiting a true sequel to doom 3 then i suggest perhaps wait a bit for game to become cheap enough !

DOOM is everything I want in a FPS game. It is fast paced, challenging, and just pure chaotic fun. Even on Normal difficulty, there were times where, I'm not ashamed to say, I died and would have to be a little bit more strategic concerning when to pick up armor, health, or power-up abilities that are placed around the map in order to win the battle. The weapon upgrade system puts a fun twist on the game, making it a challenge to master all of the weapons abilities before the end of the game. The multiplayer is classic arena gameplay, bringing back the classic fast paced action that so many arena style players have been begging for. If you like the multiplayer from the old Halo games , I would definitely give this a try. The multiplayer needs an actual leaderboard system, but other than that it is pretty solid. This game is a fresh breathe of air into the kind of stale and repetitive FPS genre. Whether it be collecting hidden collectables, mastering your weapon's abilities, and kicking trash on single player with intense glory kills, or kicking it back and playing a casual game of chaotic arena style multiplayer, DOOM is a game I am going to see myself playing for a long time. Unless I am completely addicted looking at you bloodborne . I like to think things over let the review marinate and really think about it . I'm older I'm married and I have children I have a crazy job etc as I'm sure most of us do . I'll sit down with a title a couple of hours at a time and start to form my review . Also if you've read any of my reviews I'm an old guy compared to you whippersnappers so I like to give my personal experience and backstory with storied franchises . This may come off as fanboyism but all I'm trying to do is convey how special a title is if it is still relevant today . Games mean different things to different people as well as the memories associated with them .

In 1985 we lived on the south side of Chicago I quickly became friends with the kid across the street and we quickly became best friends . He also introduced me to the wonderful world of gaming . In 1992 my buddy moved to the suburbs . Not really that far but when you're a kid ..... Anyway once in awhile I would still go over to his house and we'd hang out play games whatever . In 1993 I went to visit and in his room he had a gateway pc with sound card and shareware version of something called doom . Now being used to new and sega consoles this was my first experience with both a pc and a pc game .

I was wowed the sound the enemies the guns and the gore and the environment . It was total sensory overload for me and blew me away . I loved the game as well as doom 2 and final doom . This game is the daddy of all first person shooters yes wolfenstein came before it but this was the one that captivated kids parents clergy and politicians alike there was simply nothing else like it and there wouldn't be for a long time until last Friday .

Upon booting up the game and selecting nightmare difficulty I was tossed into the fray . Within 10 seconds I was in combat strafing running and wait just what the hell is this jumping ?. I felt a little turned off . I ran through the first 3 maps using only a measly handgun . I was starting to lose faith it just didn't feel like doom . Then it all clicked for me . I started getting those old feelings again and adapted my playstyle accordingly . Next thing I know I'm surrounded by a multitude of demons all pining for my marine flesh or to turn my spleen into a sock puppet . The weapons start booming the music kicks in and the death rattles echo .

Make know mistake doom is dumb . There's no social commentary about violence or religion or child soldiers . Nope just shotguns and putting a moonroof in some big baddies face . Run kill demons rinse and repeat . I have heard this game called smart . Not a word I would use to describe gameplay but in terms of design ?. Doom is a Rhodes Scholar . I admit I was worried but the designers did their homework . From enemies to weapons to movement this is doom . Then when you discover things like the classic doom maps hidden within levels just sends the nostalgia factor through the roof . Most people grin when they see the bfg . Not me I grin when after 20 years I'm seeing the very best old doom levels and just how much they impacted game design . Dooms level design to designers is like Casablanca ro film buffs it's just timeless and totally relevant even today .

Doom could have did the stupid thing and tried to reinvent the wheel . Nope they took everything that made doom great giving it a modern aesthetic while still retaining its classic roots . Doom isn't willing to compromise its vision of what they want this franchise to be and that is so rare and refreshing in this day . The sound level design enemies and weapon animations are fantastic . I'm not a frames per second stickler and quite frankly I'd prefer that it run just a little slower so that my ps4 doesn't do its best imitation of a f-18 leaving the flight deck of an aircraft carrier . It's smooth fast and it rarely stutters but it will send your fan into overdrive . Playing in a 60 degree room with 2 fans cooking the console I could still hear the fan OVER a turtle beach headset so I wouldn't reccomend extended play sessions . None of that takes away from the game though .

Id could have played it safe and made this a game full of modern concessions . The glory kills for example highlight enemies in a blue orangeish hue after they have been staggered . This prompts you to preform a brutal melee glory kill that also replenishes health and sometimes ammo . In short this is the doom you've been waiting for . Oh and my best friend ?. Lives across the street again and tonight we are going to Slay some demons just like in 93 . Funny how things come full circle isn't it ?.

Once an area is cleared, you stock up on health and ammo and move on to the next.

It's not quite the same, melee is the primary means of healing as it results in health drops. You do need to shoot most enemies to weaken them before you can do this. Traversal is also a bigger element here than it is in Sam.

It also takes elements of Brutal Doom and mixes them into the formula. It's quite gory and the kills are quite a spectacle.

The result is a fast and fun old school style shooter with Doom 3 style visuals that are newer and shinier. Single player alone is well worth the price of admission.

Plus there's a Little Big Planet style map editor system called Snap Map that will give plenty of replay once you tire of the campaign. Users can create both single and multiplayer maps, so regardless of your preference you'll have tons to do after you've escaped Hell in the campaign.

Haven't messed with the MP, but I've heard it's similar to Quake and UT. I'm not a MP guy and don't care much, the rest of the game is more than enough to satisfy me.

Doom is grand and doesn't try to reinvent the wheel. After Doom 3 fans asked for a throwback to classic FPS gameplay, and ID delivered exactly that.

After finishing the game, I finally get why this is named DOOM and not Doom 4.
Because this is Doom at its core, its more Doom than anything in existence. Hard as nails, with great soundtrack and even greater gameplay full of awesome maps, demons, speed, secrets and a hell of fun, this is DOOM, and this is the best fps experience I've ever had.

Doom doesn't waste time by trying to explain why you're doing what you're doing I was blasting demons within minutes. It's gun play is addicting, satisfying and fantastic. Probably the best shooters I have played...ever and I am a big FPS fan.

I missed out on doom 3 but I have played it here and there and I can tell why some did not like it. I did enjoy what I played though but this game is way different. It's pretty much a middle finger to doom 3. It's gory and glorious. Sometimes you just want to plop down and shoot stuff and this is the best way to do so.

I recommend playing with headphones and in the dark. I have a smart LED light and I been playing with the light in a red color which just adds to the atmosphere.

Pick this game up if you're a fan of the FPS genre and remember paying FPS games before confusing stories and cut scenes. The best thing about this is it does let you explore and you should. The gameplay is so fast that it's hard to step back and appreciate the work Id did on this but I encourage it.

MP is fun and fast. Nothing too spectacular here but it's fun. I really bought it for the campaign.

Dooms multiplayer is great, modern... but repetitive. It limits itself in that the maps all feel the same, and there isn't that much variation in game modes, and therefore the experience was the same every time. Most of the time in fact it just felt like the campaign but with other players shooting at you as well. Speaking of repetition after a while of gaining equipment and (baring in mind I was playing the hardest difficulty) and killing the same demons in waves to clear areas over and over it does repeat itself slightly, and at times just felt boring.

With all this being said I found the story of it alright, however for a FPS for this it isn't really that important as it's definitely more focused on acing the shooter aspect of it. It launches you right in with one objective: shoot and kill. Moreover I feel the boss fights of this game were fantastic, grueling and bloody all throughout with interesting mechanics, hard amounts of health and brilliant design they were always new and a joy to play through.

Overall DOOM was a fun game to play, I wouldn't however go back to it as there are other less repetitive experiences to be had in other games like this, however this does not take away from what an experience doom was. It's reasonably lengthy 12 hour campaign and entertaining multiplayer probably more fit for some than others, you get well worth the price of a now £15 game or lower. A fantastic example of how a FPS should play, nostalgia trip and memorable experience.

this game kicks ass ok, if you don't own yet, just buy it, this is what a video game should be like, this is the most balls to the walls game of the last decade.

It has one of the best story modes that I have ever playd. The multiplayer is pretty good, but the matching system isn't the best.

Doom honors its legacy while setting the stage for a new era for the long dormant franchise. Intimately gory encounters and a surprising emphasis on story more than make up for the bland multiplayer.

Exactly the right amount of old and new, DOOM is an adrenaline rush that borders on overwhelming in the best possible way.

Doom's shimmering, bombastic combat is as absorbing as it is revelatory. [Aug 2016, p.100]
