Picking up health and armor and constantly running at demons and then destroying them never gets old. They always introduce a new weapon or new mechanic to keep things interesting. The focus here is completely on game play and it works. The story was interesting while simplistic which was fine but even though doom is not a story based game i wanted a little more. The boss fights where amazing and so was the platforming which paces the game very well until the third act where you basically just keep shooting demons. The campaign should not be missed but the multiplayer while fun at times was way too modernized and generic. The other features however like the SnapMap and arcade mode are a lot of fun and give the game more replay value. It also helps this game looks amazing and has a phenomenal art direction and design. And don't even get me started on that amazing heavy metal soundtrack. This game is an instant classic and something all other shooters should take example of. Expand

    Was it fun?

Yes, I very much enjoyed playing through this game.

    Are there any similar games?

It is a very standard first person.

    Favorite World/Stage?

I really enjoyed going to Hell. I know how that sounds but they were fun levels.

    Would you play it again?

Yeah, one day I’ll play it on a higher difficulty.

    Any Complaints?

In one of the levels, there was an element of platforming. You had to climb up, jumping from platform to platform. I’m not a fan of platforming in the first person. I find its very hard to judge your jumps. I died more on that one level than I did the entire game.

How many hours did you play it?

Somewhere around 12-13 hours. Its perfect length for this type of game.

I'll start off by saying that I'm not exactly the target audience for this game. While I loved Wolfenstein 3d, Doom, and Quake when I was younger, that was mainly because they were cutting-edge and offered never before seen experiences. These days, I look for good or unique storytelling in games and I find the typical grinds and gameplay loops boring.

I'll start with the gameplay. It's everything you'd expect a modern version of Doom to be. The only minor issues with it is that rockets don't seem to be nearly as fun as they used to be (maybe that's more of a Quake thing), and feedback upon receiving damage is kind of light. It's a great change of pace from the hordes of military shooters we've had for the past 15+ years. Although if you've primarily played military shooters, then Doom will take some getting used to.

Controlling the game via the PS4 controller works well enough, though isn't as good as a keyboard/mouse setup.

I must praise the graphics. Playing this on a standard PS4 is amazing. Everything is fluid and looks great. This is one of the best-looking PS4 games I've played, though I primarily play RPGs. I wish more developers would license id's engine for their PS4 games.

The story is the main reason I got this. Just hearing about Doom Guy and his disrespect for authority got me interested. The first level is amazing and there's some good characterization going on here, but after that, it's toned down a lot. Doom Guy doesn't start angrily breaking stuff again until one level in the middle of the game. And there's many sections throughout where he just stands there and watches. I really would have liked to see him do more. I was especially disappointed when meeting the final boss: he just stood there. Though I suppose his finishing move somewhat made up for it.

The story is light. I remember there being more story and background in Doom 3 (2004). You only interact with three other characters through the whole game, and they're not all that interesting. They really just serve to give you a reason to go from one level to the next. There's a relatively small (compared to other games I play) number of data logs that contain information about the locations, weapons, monsters, and characters. But again, they're not too interesting.

There's a surprising number of extras too, which I don't remember ever being in a previous Doom game. User-created levels, specific secret item/areas, and even original doom levels. This is always nice to see when most games these days repackage their extras as DLC.

So yeah, I had an average time with this game. It was a bit fun to kill hordes of demons, but it got a bit monotonous for me with not a lot pushing me forward, storywise. It's staying in my collection regardless. As an old-school Doom fan, I wouldn't do anything else.

My biggest problem with this game is the sort of "finishing move" concept, new to this iteration of Doom. It works like this: after you attack an enemy to the point of them having little health left, they are highlighted and this gives you the chance to run up and tear them apart mostly with your bare hands, leaving them a bloody mess, and spawning health/other pickups while doing so.

Sounds cool, right? I thought so too...at first.

Then I realized that since the game is mostly stingy with health pickups, you're forced to keep performing these sort of finishing moves whenever possible to stay alive, especially in later levels. It's a gimmick that completely breaks up the flow of the game. You end up shooting enemies a couple times then you rip them apart like cardboard, rinse and repeat. It totally undermines the intimidation factor of the enemies.

Imagine how fun the original Doom would have been if you had had the powers of the berserk powerup 100% of the time AND had to use it constantly. It would have sucked. The player SHOULD feel nearly helpless when left with nothing but their fists to fight hordes of demons--it's a great incentive to be prudent with ammo consumption. But in this game if you have low ammo, it's like "so what, i'll just shoot them a couple times each and tear into them faster than Oprah into a box of jelly donuts"

Also regardless of all the hype about this being an "old school FPS" (mostly referring to the health system actually based on health replenishment rather than CoD-style 'wait in a corner to heal' tactics) there ARE dialog screens you have to wait through, and they try to make "the story" be a part of the game too.

...uhm, this game IS called Doom, right?

The video game equivalent of a modern reboot/remake movie that captures little of the spirit of it's namesake.

Gameplay is pretty smooth however the lack of challenge made the replay value mediocre, yes I get it, you are a bad ass super soldier but you should have a little bit of trouble. But the Devil's a back-stabbing prick and Mars' UAC facility is now a blood-soaked den of evil. Demons and undead fiends stalk the formerly pristine hallways while the greater envoys of Hell plan to expand their territory and engulf the solar system in blood and despair. However, the demons aren't the deadliest thing roaming Mars. Driven by the oldest, purest hate but sporting an arsenal of devastating futuristic weaponry, Doomguy returns to show both the demons and the FPS genre how to do **** right. Forget about deliberate pacing, regenerating shields, or cover-based combat; everything here is a hyper-kinetic orgy of gore, guns, and unparalleled badassness. Unfortunately, Doomguy's staggering speed and prowess occasionally results in enemies getting left too far in the dust and breaking the pace of the combat. You'll zip through battle blowing apart demons so fast that you'll often be left waiting for the game to catch up and spawn more enemies. It also doesn't help that the game relies a little too much on combat arenas that lock you in a location and don't let you progress until you've wiped out several cumbersome waves of enemies. When these arenas are large enough, and most of them are, then this isn't a problem. But it definitely is a large blow against a modern game with old-school stylings to allow itself to become too formulaic, regardless of how exhilarating it all is. Thankfully, everything outside of the combat measures up amazingly well. The level design is slick, atmospheric, and always allows a lot of room for exploration which is necessary if you want to find the excellent weapon mods and power-ups which add a significant boost to the already exciting combat. Guiding the action is a surprisingly well-written story about betrayal and revenge which never impedes the gameplay and gives both Doomguy and the player the perfect motivation for wanting to plunge headlong into a fray of demons with a roaring chainsaw. Welcome to Doom. Expand

Doom is fun. Simply put. At it's core is fast paced combat, strong game play mechanics, and the simple goal of murdering demons before they murder you. The story really falls by the wayside, but that doesn't matter, as it's the shooting and the bloody, visceral combat that's the main draw here. You kill your demonic foes in numerous ways, from close range shot gun blasts, to chainsawing them in half and getting rewarded with more ammo for your many, many guns. There's no reloading, as well - which aids in the flow of combat, allowing you to keep a fast pace as you zip around the large, open arenas, occasionally preforming a glory kill on a hapless hell spawn in order to get your health back up. Coupled with this, there's a large amount of upgrades to help bolster you on your mission; from weapon upgrades, to upgrades for your suit (some, such as the one making you immune to explosive barrels, are somewhat more useful than others), to runes gained from completing challenge arenas. All of it serves to make the game more fun, and a worthwhile venture at any rate.

    Can't recommend highly enough.

The only things that lets it down is that the gameplay doesn’t evolve at all from start to finish (other than adding new monsters and weapons) and, as a result, things became really repetitive well before the end of the 12+ hour campaign and I personally would have been much happier had the game come to an end a few hours sooner.
