Yeah, let's give Destiny a 6.4 User Score, and give Cory in the House on DS a 9.4. There's a difference between a game being bad and a game being disappointing, you should judge it on the content not on what you thought it was going to be. If it turned out to be the type of game you don't want to play, you shouldn't have pre-ordered it. Whenever you buy a game, you read the reviews. Cons: The game suffers from a boring story, somewhat empty world, repetitive missions, similar enemies, some broken mechanics, and repetitive boss fights.

Pros: Good mechanics, intuitive controls, awesome soundtrack, good artistic direction, rpg elements, and graphical quality. Hard sell, don't buy a PS4 for this game, and don't buy this game if you weren't interested in it to begin

Not a bad game. Gun to play just wish there was more content. It's a game that takes you around space and I wish there was more! The PVP pissed me off so much when I first started because of the learning curve but once you get into it, it's fun. The only issue is it gets boring really fast.

Destiny was one of the most anticipated games for 2014, largely due to the reputation of Bungie and it's success with the Halo franchise. But, does Destiny live up to the lofty expectations of gamers, or does it fall into the dark abyss, forever to be forgotten?

After spending about 200+ hours playing Destiny on the PS4, I decided it was time to give it an accurate review based on in-depth play with everything that the game offers. Many reviewers would have you believe that Destiny is not worth the $59.99 price tag, but very few of them have managed to complete even a tiny snippet of the content in-game. While Destiny may not be the revolutionary franchise that gamers expected, it does deliver a truly refreshing IP to the FPS genre. Destiny is very similar to Gearbox's "Borderlands" franchise in that it delivers an RPG driven FPS, however, Destiny focuses more on the social / multiplayer experience than the singleplayer narrative that made Borderlands a success. As one should expect, most of your time is spent engaging enemies in a variety of futuristic locales with automated weaponry and a dash of space magic. The controls feel tight and responsive, and the shooting mechanics are reminiscent of Halo. While Destiny delivers a very well executed FPS experience, it leaves more to be desired in regards to the "RPG" portion of the game. The story is lacking, and the narrative is almost entirely non-existent. Destiny's cast of characters feel lifeless and unresponsive with very little emotion or connection to the potential narrative Bungie planned. However, for those who can look beyond the singleplayer shortcomings, Destiny delivers an engaging social experience with friends. With persistent support provided by Bungie to improve and patch the game, it is merely this franchises "Destiny" before it tops the charts as one of the most revolutionary and influential games of this generation. I truly look forward to what Bungie has planned in future DLC releases, "The Dark Below" and "House of Wolves", and recommend that you purchase this title and give it a try!

The mechanics are excellent, the game just needs more content to do justice to how smooth the gameplay is. Upcoming DLC SHOULD *I hope* fix this problem, however using DLC to flush out areas that should have been in the game in the first place is just bad business.

The last one is still correct but in the time between Day 1 and its first expansion pack (due Dec) is way too long. I got very board of replaying the same old missions in the same old places just with higher ranked enemy's. When my friends left to play other games i got board of playing the game by myself and wanted couldn't play unless it was Co-Op.
Then there was a couple of bugs which after the fulfilment of defeating a boss with your friends which took a lot of teamwork and sometimes up to an hour to achieve you was left with worthless items as a reward.
I've not played Destiny for about 3 weeks after it come out as I'm board of same missions, raids and searching the same places.
Bungie have a great idea for a platform but the lack of content to keep it fresh is not their.

The DLC is going to further explain the story line and keep you engaged. You might be wondering why I did't give this game a 10 if it is as good as I say. It's because Bungie can't explain the disappointing story line that is happening NOW prior to release date. My final rating would be an 8/10 (Above average). Expand

These are all issues but not to the level many people complain. Stability issues are few and far between unless you have some major issues or incompatible ISP, but support is always available. Glitches are apparent, but rarely gamebreaking, though I have raged quite a bit at major glitches that have to be fixed that seem to be forgotten due to community needs. I understand it, but it is frustrating.

This game, whether people like it or not, has added a lot of new components to the world of console-gaming FPS. Much is borrowed in some places and not enough in others, but the world that has been created is graphically stunning and beautiful, with great tweaks, like the broken international space station high above the moon, the sheer massive size of ships, and so on. The combat is the smoothest I have ever seen.

Lack of content is offset by random drops and loot, which is a major gripe from the community, though this is nothing new. Random is how it goes, and I have heard complaints about the game being short or the game being boring, but often, these are spouted by people with 200+ hours of gameplay. And this game will keep your attention for multiple hundreds of hours. Strikes are fun, the raid is hard and worthy of raiders from any game, though it does have a lot of glitches that can end your run early.

I can spend hours on this game doing patrols and strikes, though with my characters as high as they are now, it has lost some appeal. I am very excited for much of the additions that Bungie is constantly updating and adding, but overall this game does fall short in a number of ways.

PvP is infuriating no matter how good you're doing due to faulty net code. Glitches are obnoxious, and the game is very repetive without much of a need to continue doing the things in the game that require a lot of time. If you raid, you quickly lose the need for gaining reputation or doing bounties, and there are a ton of simple additions that would've made the game far more interesting with minimal extra effort. The story is there, but is overall drab. The lore adds some nice touches, but you have to explore that using the website or companion app which was a risk that mostly fell flat. Overall, the game has gotten more boring, but after multiple hundreds of hours by most players, I don't think there is a need to complain, especially when so many of the community have gotten to the level they are at by glitching the final boss, allowing the best weapons and armor to drop.

Overall, the music, gameplay, environment, and endgame is amazing offset by minor complaints and repetition. Even with the complaints, this game will hold your attention for a very long time and will continue to influence new games coming out.

The missions are very intense when you reach over level 15 and there's great atmosphere and the music makes it even more intense! You need to play with friends in a fire-team to get the best experience as you coordinate with each other to complete strikes, raids and missions so I do not recommend to play it on your own as it's not that fun.

The graphics are stunning and there are some breathtaking views (go to the black garden on venus!). There are always things to do from daily/weekly raids and strikes, PvP, complete bounties to upgrade your equipment.

If I had to be super-critical, I think they should make the AI spawn random rather than at fixed points.

If you're sitting on the fence, buy it, find people to play it with and enjoy the Destiny experience!

Forget the online matches, it's poorly matched to players of equal skills and as much fun as CoD (not fun at all).

It looks very nice indeed on the PS4, and the controls and handling are spot on. I can't fault that side of the games development at all. I cannot attest to the games longevity at this point but in small short burts it does have it's moments.

With that being said, why I give this game a 10, is because I'm addicted to it. I love wasting time with the different goals the game sets up for you. I don't mind grinding missions when the objective is a little different, such as bounties, exotic bounties, and strikes. Finding a random treasure chest feels like the lottery, and hitting a legendary in pvp, is a gold mine. I love how seamless the transition is from single player, to multiplayer. It all feels like the same universe. This is different from COD and Battlefield in the sense that the single player and multiplayer, while fun, feel segregated.

I'm just having a lot of fun playing Destiny. It's as simple as that. So refreshing after Battlefield 4 was a huge let down for me. The Vault of Glass was huge and a great experience.

The reviews that people like Angry Joe had about left a very nasty taste in my mouth about the game. However, after my friends convinced me to buy the game since it still received a mediocre review.

When I played it, it was actually very fun. Although the lack of story is a huge problem, I can still get over it as I come into my video games expecting GAMEPLAY. As John Carmack said "Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important." And although its probably not there, its the core gameplay that is what should be focused on.

But, this does not mean that gameplay is innocent. Yes, there are moments in the game that feel like Bungie's idea of "difficulty" is shooting for an hour. Yes, what was thought to happen with the games exploration didn't. And yes, the reward system for PVP is horrible (Do bad, get better rewards).

However, if you look past this, then you will find a very solid FPS that can be fun alone or with friends. The game is visually amazing, the gun mechanics are fair, the PVP despite the reward system is great, and if you can get around the other problems then you will find a product than you can play for a little while until something else comes around the corner.

One of the things Destiny impressed me with was the art design. The enemies you face look unique, and the guns you use are nothing short of astounding in design, and the way they work. You can obviously see how the huge budget they had helped with their attention to detail, this is definetly a AAA experience. My favorite mode is the crucible (PvP), it is intense and very fun to play with the unique abilities and variety of weapon choices used in the game. This game had me hooked for 3 months, with it being my main game i played. That may not mean much though, because at the time I only had a few other games anyways. I played 100 hours in the first few weeks, if that tells you enough. I had a great time with the friends I played it with, and that can't be ignored. If you play Destiny with friends, and love PvP multiplayer, you will have fun. Also something that cannot be ignored and is a trend I wish would continue in other games is that I NEVER experienced major lag. My entire playing expierence was smooth and overall it was just fun.
    Now to the bad.
Destiny is repetitive. It is as simple as that. Play the same strikes over and over again and dominate, only to see the other two random people who did it with you with even LESS than half the kills and assists you had both get legendaries. Also the strikes do get boring fast, feeling like a chore when you run through them. Also now, almost 8 months after it released, barely any of my friends play it, and I can only play a few matches without having boredom creep upon me.
My score accounts for, however, the time I had with this game while I was playing it. I had fun, that's what is important to me. Right now, if you can get it for $20-$30, I would say give it a shot if you have friends who will want to play it with you, and you like the other reasons I listed above.

This is supposed to be the game that sets the standard for modern video games? **** This is what, the 7th 8th or 9th generations of consoles? Yet it felt like there was less content in this game than a Sega Genesis game! The story is so bare bones that I don't give a **** about any character, even Peter Dinklage's performance feels like a waste. Nothing is explained, you're just revived and here go fight these aliens without an explanation whatsoever. From what I've heard, the main writer for the story got fired 6 months before release and they had to scrap the story and start over, no wonder the story sucks.

The graphics don't feel or look much better than PS3, they're just average.

The levels are the worst aspect about the game, I heard it was supposed to be an open world MMO FPS RPG, you just drop to the same spot in the same level every time and fight the same enemies every time. The enemies are beyond boring and bland. The back drops are boring, lifeless, and bland. Every mission is the same mission, just defend your little guide from hords, that's it.

There is so little content in this game that it makes it so boring, I have never played such a boring game in my life and I've played some boring titles.

In addition to being boring and bland, there is one other problem I have with the game, the loading, there is so much loading. Your ship is the loading screen no less, which is so BS because it gives me the idea that the developers missed a GOLDEN opportunity to have space battles.

The whole game just screams laziness, and that's the worst part, $500 million for a budget and this game is more boring, bland, disappointing, and irritating than an Adam Sandler movie! It just goes to show that graphics, big budget, AAA doesn't mean JACK! The fact that this game supposedly won over 100 awards is just an outright LIE!

A good game has a clear and engaging story, good controls, engaging not too repetitive gameplay (core gameplay can be repetitive, but it's the story, level, or mission that can make the gameplay fun and enjoyable), good characters that you care about (REAL missed an opportunity here, the fact the game is an mmo is just SO boring, and that you can't get AI party members at all to join if you don't have friends or don't make friends, it would've made the game so much more enjoyable at least like Mass Effect), graphics at this point is just icing on the cake if they're good or charming (like Minecraft charming).

This game could have had so much more! It lacks so much, yet has the balls to be full price for what feels like an unfinished rushed title.

Oh, it's published by Activision, that explains a whole lot now...

Destiny is a wonderfully addicting, fun, mindless shooter that had the potential to to be the defining game of the current generation. Unfortunately, the potential was mishandled, and instead of the great game that was promised, Destiny is a mediocre shared world shooter with too much emphasis on PVP, horrible net code, and uninspired story telling.

This game feels like part 1 of an amazing game. At the moment its a very very good game, very easy to pick up and play, the more you play, the more there is. Visuals are great. Community could be better if a lone player but otherwise really great for the casual gamer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I know im going to get a lot of hate for this but im not the type to really give a flying toast about it.

This might not come to you as a surprise to you guys but all you see on this forum all day, everyday, all the god damn time is someone whining, complaining, crying, hating or telling everyone that their leaving destiny forever. So I decided to make this post of appreciation.

I like Destiny, Im 25 years old, married, no children. I paid about 100$ for this game(including both dlcs), and I have over 1000 combined hours of play time and entertainment from it, I would be an ungrateful brat if I said that I didn't get my moneys worth. Destiny allows me to burn free time with enjoyment. I like the thrill you get when you finally obtain the exotic that you've been waiting for. I like to open chests and find undiscovered presents. I love the fact that no matter how bad Bungie Fcks up, I keep coming back for more. I like the fact that this game entertains me enough that I don't have to spend more dough on other games(for the meanwhile). I love the fact that unlike COD, team tactics are actually essential and necessary to beat the competition. I love the fact that you have so many different things to do every week, all you have to do is chose(Poe/ToO/Nightfalls/Crota raid/Vog raid/Crucible/Farming/Bounties/Strikes). i love the fact that (LFG) allows you to meet new people, and play together from all over the world(diversity is awesome), conversating with them, making new gaming friends, have some laughs about Bungies mistakes, and knocking Skolas on his arse. I love the sense of accomplishment that you feel when you first beat a new raid, or the first time you get 9-0 in ToO, The first time you get that Darn GJallarhorn(although some of you havnt gotten it yet, it will come).

I know that some of you will hate
Some of you will be teachers, and correct my spelling mistakes
Some of you will insult or degrade
Some of you will dispute that this game is actually pretty good
Haters gona hate, ainters gona aint...you hate us cuz you ainus
But that has nothing to do with this post.

All im saying, is that we should appreciate destiny for what it is. A fun, sometimes rewarding, addicting, very social, visually stunning and enticing game. If it wasn't, people wouldn't have hundreds of hours invested into it.

    Sincerely,
    A satisfied casual gamer

The worst part is the lack of content and that Bungie and Activision are aiming for players who would pay anything to play it, they release low content DLCs at a very high price. The history takes like 4 hours, and once you've finished it you'll just repeat it over and over and over again getting bored to death.

It's true you have a lot of collectibles to get (exotic weapons and Grimoire cards mostly) that in order to get them all you'll have to do what I just said: Repeat everything over and over again, and pray that you get de loot you're looking for.

But like I said, the Crucible saved this game for me, if not I would've quit very fast.

Destiny overall is an amazing game! I will admit that the story line is not the best thing the video game world has seen. The thing that makes Destiny such a great game is the community. The streams, Youtube videos, and Podcasts really adds a whole new level to the game. For the new players who are just now beginning Destiny I recommend get active in the community.

Destiny is not a perfect game. What destiny is is an incredible gaming experience. It has a foundation that lays down the possibility for incredible future. From the incredible landscapes, the world building, incredible musical score and ambience. Like any young platform and has its weaknesses and has what I believe to be an incredible experience for years to come.

BLUF: "I don't have time to explain" is a quote from the game during a so-called story moment in a cut-scene. My low opinion: There is no actual storytelling in the game, so the excellent visuals and good gun-play mechanics mean nothing as you cannot emotionally invest yourself in a world which doesn't care to ever explain.... ANYTHING.

I've played since october and this review is based on all of the updates up to this day.

Destiny in its core is a fun game that doesn't have too many bugs and playes well. The music is amazing, story feels interesting and the enemies are amazing, even if reused a lot. There is a lot of different weapons and abilities to use that are supposed to make the game more deep and interesting.

There is a lot of different weapons and abilities to use that are supposed to make the game more deep and interesting.

Now the problem: Destiny doesn't have a finished story. The two DLC that cost 30€ brought some useless info into the game, but didn't add to the actual story. And since the story is lacking, you'd want to play some Crucible (PVP) to spend your time. The matchmaking system is complete crap. You don't really see it in 6 vs 6 battles, but when you're put together with two **** players for hours without your actual K/D affecting it, it tends to make a guy mad.

That's not all. Bungie made a lot of changes to PVP by nerfing Auto Rifles, just because they were used so much and they decided them to be so OP that people didn't like other guns. That ended up making PVP into a game type with only 3-5 different primary weapons used and 2-3 secondary. If you try crucible, you'll propably be killed by these: Thorn, The Last Word, Hawkmoon (all handcannons), or Party Crasher +1, Felwinter's Lie and Matador 64 (All shotguns).

Bungies idea to nerf AR's to make other guns popular made it so that only these weapons are used and you'd rarely see some others like Red Death and the messenger.

This has been going since February and they haven't done anything to rebalance the weapon system.
I truly enjoyd Crucible prior to the nerf as you could actually see amazing weapons, but now that crap.

Due to the current status of Destiny, I've decided not to buy the Taken King DLC and propably not any other either.

In a MMORPG the most important thing, (imo) is content and community which Destiny failes to deliver, It is alot of grinding:
    *Run here
    *Defend this
    *Kill that
*If someone dies run away and wait for respawn.

Simply put, there is no game on the market that comes anywhere close to what Destiny does. As a game design enthusiast, I feel they just got so much right in this title.

    - The three weapon load out is a golden triangle. Switching between primary, secondary and heavy weapons in pitched battles feels clutch. You have options, but not too many. The power level for each feels highly appropriate. The available combinations to experiment with are numerous. They pioneered this tight + controlled weapon loadout concept in the original Halo and the design language remains strong in Destiny.

    - To continue with the point above, the gameplay and pace for an FPS feels perfect to me. Having the gunfighting component complimented with melee, grenades, and super we see that another golden triangle emerges. Tying stats to these skills was smart. Most all of they make your guardian truly feel *powerful* and unique. The RPG component of this game really has merit and doesn't detract from the FPS elements in the slightest. The skill trees remain fairly balanced between and among classes.

    - While the story was definitely...lacking in plot and exposition, the level + world design has been consistently spot on. Every area feels textured, detailed and respectively thought out. So many beautiful vistas. Travelling through the world on your sparrow can be a pure joy - providing a welcome break from the fettered pace of combat. Another beautiful and under-appreciated design feature.

    - The sound design in this game is the best I've ever come across. No title matches Destiny my honest, humble opinion when it comes to sound effects. Certain exotics are just sound addictive. Sparrows sound amazing. The hugely varied enemies all have amazing triggered sounds upon death and it compliments the FPS mechanics perfectly. You just want to keep popping off enemies.

    - They finally added meaningful multiplayer to an FPS. Competitive PvP is great and all, but what really makes Destiny sweet is the strikes and raids. These are the bread and butter of Destiny and really what make it stand apart from other games on the market. I've been a huge proponent of cooperative gameplay ever since Halo 1 truly pioneered split-screen play. Playing with other humans against AI just makes it so much more involving and fun, it's hard to put a finger on it. The loot from these activities is a huge draw that keeps you coming back for more, reminds me very much of Diablo 2. Completing your first raid feels like a huge accomplishment in teamwork. The feeling is really only matched by a handful of MMORPGs. Bungie deserves all the credit in the world for bringing this not only to FPS players, but to console users as well.

    - The lore is captivating and the entire premise of the world is highly alluring. I love how this is a science fiction title based in our own solar system, not some randomly named star-system we could care less about. The combination of familiarity and wonder really comes together for a backdrop that is truly unmatched for the vast majority of game titles. This is a game I willingly invest myself in because it's just so damn cool. Coolest game I've played in the last decade. This is obviously a highly subjective opinion but I just had to say it.

Unfortunately all of the games missions occur on the same handful of mid-sized maps; the variety of terrain and areas to visit is paltry compared to its competition.

You learn very little about the opposition, your allies, the motivation, the hows/whys/history of the universe; the story is virtually nonexistant in this manner, giving you the feeling of an unfinished world. Some of the enemies look interesting, and some even have unique behaviors in combat and at different levels of injury; this is one of the few redeeming traits of the game.

Level progression is very simplistic and basic, with virtually all characters of the same class differing only in appearance; and as appearance is equipment base, that in itself isn't a player choice.

Equipment is very clearly better/worse, with stated damage/second values or armor ratings; you very rarely have a choice between two equivalent items. Weapon selection is sparse as well; you have a few basic categories of primary weapons, secondary weapons, and two types of heavy weapons, all but two of which simply amount to 'spitting out bullets either on automatic or semi-automatic'.

Overall, a strictly average game with pretty visuals but little else to redeem it.

I cry because destiny is a game that had epic potential... but WASTED it on a weak story, repetitive (at best) gameplay, and Peter Dinklage opening doors for you and giving pointless monologues that serve no purpose other than to make you hate the loading screens. The story is filled with SO much holes it's not funny, and Activison is now using DLC as an excuse to fill the holes. But the worst problem is being forced to play with a network connection. For the past 2 days, the PSN has been hacked by a group of dumbass 12 year old kids known only as the 'lizard squad', and even when they're done with their DDoS attacks, SONY has to patch everything that went wrong. Search up '#PSN' on Google/twitter and see what I mean. This is especially sad because this means you can't play destiny if you wanted to. Don't blame Bungie for that, internet, the lizard squad did it.

Overall, disappointing. Some missions are fun, yet still repetitive, and I've heard the dark below isn't doing all too well. Let's hope destiny 2 is good... if there even will BE a destiny 2.

What more can you ask from a game!

There are some bugs, glitches, and exploits. However, I appreciate the way Bungie is working on these, communicating, and fixing these with the gaming community. All points to Bungie on this.

When you get into Destiny, and if you stay with this game for a while, I doubt you can easily put this game aside for a long time- expansions and sequels.

The best things about Destiny are:
    1. The iron banner multiplayer event.
    2. The raids.
    3. The overall content.
    4. Nightfall strikes.
    5. XUR
    6. Guns.
    7. The joy on dancing with your team or solo.
    8. Grinding - yes, grinding is not bad as you multiple choices on how you grind. -so choose your fun thing and grind away.
    9. The soundtrack.
    10. (Not the least) the multiplayer mechanics - probably the best in the market.

The only flaw or negative comment on my part will be that the release of content is pretty slow. If we had a bit more content available now rather than waiting for the next Dlc, more people will resist switching to alternate games that release in the gaps between the DLCs.

This game certainly stands out and ahead of the crowd.

After putting in some 200 hours, I discovered that Destiny eventually becomes the worst kind of loot grinder you can imagine. It includes some of the worst aspects of RPG and MMO games, namely the repetitive play as you look for loot. This part of the game can be addictive, but keep in mind that the game world is actually quite small compared to games like Skyrim and Dragon Age, so the boredom sets in fast.

Something else to be aware of is that Activision has seen to it that the game pushes players toward the very expensive DLC ($20 each) packs by creating a variety of paywalls that will restrict your gameplay once you reach some of the endgame content. It's a cheap way of pressuring players into paying, or else excluding them from content they've already paid for.

Something else to keep in mind is that the game is not meant for solo play. While you can do some content alone, if you don't have at least 5 good friends, you'll find yourself shut out of the "raids", which are considered the best of the endgame stuff. Bungie refuses to put matchmaking in, so anyone who doesn't have friends online is going to be out of luck.

If you pick this up cheap, or wait for an edition that includes all content, it might be worth a play, but NEVER pay full price for it. The concepts had some potential, but most of it was squandered by game design decisions that revolve around making money, first and foremost.

Hours wasted, but I felt the need to experience "end game" content and proceeded to do so.
The enemies are almost cut and paste enemies from halo, just with a different model. Don't kid yourself, they're all the same, the react the same, they do the same things. The multiplayer is very dull and the load times give you plenty of time to go make a sandwich. They're worse than television commercials. Travelling to the Tower is the worst, since it's needed to go there often to deal with gear and vendoring, missions, etc. Alot of this could have been achieved through a menu system rather than making the masses sit through loading screen after loading screen.
The world feels dead. It is not an mmo by any means. It feels very forced and unnecessary, the experience would have been better in a Monster Hunter style. Have a hub, space travel load screens (rather than having the home screen being your ship floating through space, which wastes time just to have the "aw shiny, and look at my friend's shiny ships"), have more interesting enemies that have actual hard mechanics and movements, etc.
The pvp is also very drab. It's very cookie cutter with the added "hey i can also casts spells". The experience is more or less a downgraded halo experience. I'd rather have an actual arena shooter than a COD style shooter.
Overall, this game is a wash and I only own it because I wanted a shiny white PS4 (would never have bought it otherwise, given the history and overhype behind it).

This is an update of my earlier glowing review. I still disagree with the initial round of bad reviews from major publications. They had the right scores for the wrong reasons.

For the single player "Destiny" is fun but not engaging. There are plenty of missions and on-line activities and shooting aliens is fun as it was in "Halo". There are no memorable moments from any of the missions. You escort Dinklebot to a waypoint, Dinklebot screws up, and you have to defend Dinkeblot from waves of attackers. The whole story makes no sense. Nevertheless, the first play-through is fun enough that most players will enjoy this portion of the game.

Bungie says the real meat of "Destiny" is the co-operative on-line content consisting of strikes, the raid which is now 2 raids after December, and also an arena mode added in May. In actuality, the real meat of "Destiny" is the meta-game of collecting in-game items to reach the highest level. This meta-game is severely hampered by a lack of fun and a lack of rewards. Most of the in-game items are dropped randomly, meaning that some players will never receive the gear deserve no matter how long they play. The best in-game items, the raid legendaries, are all dropped randomly. For each weapon or piece of armor, you need to grind for experience to unlock all abilities as if you are working a job and not playing a game for enjoyment. Worse, you quickly discover that most of the activities in "Destiny" provide subpar rewards at best, and there is an inverse correlation between the quality of the rewards and the amount of fun you have playing an activity.

Then there are the bugs. More than 9 months after release, the game is riddled with bugs. The connection to Bungie's servers is always flaky. Enemies and opposing players will freeze and take no damage. Then they may flit around the map with super speed. The two raids are especially frustrating because a litany of bugs can turn a 15 minute boss fight into hours of frustration topped off by sub-par rewards. Competitive multi-player is worse off because "Destiny" uses one player's console to host the game instead of running the game off of dedicated servers. Cheating through lag manipulation is as rampant as the lag itself.

Like many players, I have put hundreds of hours into "Destiny". They weren't all good hours. For ever fun moment there are many more filled with frustration over the bugs, heart break over the poor rewards, and mindless grinding all in the hope that one day "Destiny" will be as fun as advertised. If I could go back in time I would tell myself to buy another game. Of course I have made a good friends through "Destiny", and I enjoy playing "Destiny" with them. I wish we could all play another game instead. If you are looking into joining "Destiny", I advise you don't. If you picked up a used copy of "Destiny" for cheap, enjoy the single player experience and move on.

Although Destiny isn't the brilliant start to a franchise that many had hoped for, it's a great game for those who can push through its flaws and enjoy the ride.

What is most amazing of all is that despite its litany of weird little problems, Destiny is fantastic, its combat up there with the very best, the thrilling rhythm of its battles still not fading the 30th time through, and it has no single systemic problem that is not fixable. [Dec 2014, p.106]

Destiny is a flawed but still extremely fun first person shooter. While the Destiny universe itself seems intriguing, the storyline is told in such an incoherent manner that it's hard not to be turned off by all the technobabble. Fortunately the co-op shooter mechanics are absolutely perfect. The loot system can be maddening, but in a way it adds to the game's addictiveness. [Oct 2014]
