It was decent from beginning to end of the story but once you complete that and the raid then there's pretty much nothing left to do except weekly raid grinding. It only opened up more once an expansion released but after 2 weeks the game just dries up again.

If not for the generic and at times cringy the dialogue is written, the story would be more interesting, which is a shame because the lore is amazing. When Destiny truly shines is when you play mandatory co-op missions, the thing is that even those missions will feel repetitive as the bosses are more like sponges for bullets.

Another thing that I really liked besides the lore is the magnificent art direction, weapons, gear and graphic design of this universe are superb, music and landscapes in the other hand were cool and pretty but I'm not sure they were on the same height.

I really liked my time with Destiny but I also didn't overstay my time there, because as wide as the universe may seem to be, it sure can feel hollow pretty soon.

Honestly the game had a rough beginning, at least for me. But they kept adding new content to it, and making changes and towards the end i honestly think it was overall a good game.

The premise that Bungie built Destiny on was good but their execution thereof was displeasing. Had I not rejoined the game after taking a year break and buying the season pass, I would have given this a much lower rating, due to the fact that the true ending of the game was hidden behind a pay-wall disguised as "DLC"

From the get go this game feels shallow, with poor exposition and no explanation about pretty much anything. The Story... what story? Absolutely terrible and underwhelming. I thought at some point this was made by Michael Bay. If only it was.

Shooting mechanics are clearly designed to keep players engaged instead of amused. Progression is level and loot based, with a dedication to mindless grinding for ugly looking items. The drop rate of engrams is inconsistent and more rewarding when you just **** around outside of missions and strikes.

So, poor story, poor characters, no universe building, the lore is not even in the game (which is an offense on itself) and the game was released empty, but with two announced Expansions packs. Anti-consumer, that's what this game is.

Don't play this game alone, or it will be a terrible experience. At least with friends you'll be a little amused through playing this exhausting grind fest.

    It's an underwhelming game. I give it a 5/10.

This game had massive potential. In fact, there are many hidden events that people could have enjoyed if they were able to put the lore into the game. Still way better than vanilla Destiny 2.

The story and dialogue is weak and there is nothing that makes me want to keep going in any way shape or form. The graphics are not the best, and the worlds and levels are filled with emptiness everywhere I go. The goal is simple and lame, shoot, kill, backtrack, repeat. If I have to backtrack on the first level in a game with no significant purpose, there is a problem. I will praise the awesome game-play and good multiplayer. Customization for armor and weapons is fun, but when it comes to the skill selection screen there is not much other than stat attribute boosts. The hubworld is boring and uninteresting and there is no consistent theme going on in the aesthetics. I played for 15 hours, never reached level 20, and got bored within the first hour. I still gave it a chance. If 15 hours does not count, then I don't know what does. 6 is being nice. Expand

-The map boundaries in story are quite limited, not entirely open world.
-Loot and fireteam members are hard to find in story mode.
-Progressively less incentive to level up.
-AI is bad, winning hard missions involves exploiting it by finding areas where the AI will not go/be able to shoot you. I think the developers thought that making most AI ranged attacks homing projectiles would allow them to use basic AI shooting tactics.

If you feel like casual, mindless gaming which you can play whilst listening to music when you are bored then this is ideal. This is a good example of why maybe indie games are becoming popular (lack of storyline development over gameplay).

I watched a guy on there live streaming Destiny today for a good 9 hours and I have to be honest, this game is boring as hell. Oh, and I have no idea what the game is about. Lore? Sure lots of it - just never see it. Aka: BS. Remember this:

Destiny is Halo without a story.

Remember that kids because it's going to be said many times by many people over the next few months. The reviewers know that its a mediocre game but they have to hold back on reviewing it formally to give Bungie a few more sales - because they (the reviewers helped to convince us that this game would be amazing). But don't fall for it guys, there's nothing more to this game and I guarantee the reviewers (barring a few good ones) will come out giving this 9/10+...just like they did with Titanfail - and this is worse.

And before anyone says: "hey man you gotta give this game more time", all I ask is (a) "when have reviewers ever given more than a day to review the game and held off because a developer asked them to" and (b) "who needs more than 9 hours to determine whether a game sucks"? If it honestly takes me more than an hour to figure out that a game blows, then I think I've got bigger problems than a crappy game.

I'm not saying that it's a zero - it's not. But it honestly plays exactly like Halo with some minor customization (albeit irrelevant because all 3 classes play exactly the same way) and even has the same kiddie looking enemies (bright colors, etc.) just like Halo. But there's the problem - we were told it was going to revolutionize gaming. People won't forget that. It's betrayal. Consequently, I think this one will go down as the BIGGEST letdown and marketing fist-**** that has ever been released in the history of gaming - bigger than Aliens Colonial Marines. Companies will be sued.

$500 Million to make this? Let me rephrase that: half a BILLION duckets. Where do you think they're coming from? Check your wallet and keep it in your pocket. Do not buy.

This is the definition of white-collar fraud in the 21st century.

The story is poor with much of the narrative being hidden within the unlockable grimoirs. This wouldn't be a problem since hiding lore within items works great within the "Souls" series, but Bungie makes you go to the Bungie website to actually read them. The missions become a chore since boss fights take way too long and the checkpoint system makes you start the 45 minute boss fight over. When the missions complete it doesn't feel like you are rewarded enough for spending 45 minutes lazily shooting at a giant boss. The PVP excels using Bungie's sturdy multiplayer blueprint, but since Destiny has a light-loot system the fights quickly become very unbalanced. There are many things Destiny does right, but when the game becomes such a slog with boss fights, boring missions, and a non-existent story...it's hard to see Destiny being played by many people 3 months down the line... Halo? RPG? In your dreams.

    Here are the issues:

    - repetitive, numbing game play and mechanics (what you do in the first 5 minutes of game play is what you do on a continuous loop for the rest of the game).

    - 3 character classes that are basically all the same (and feature customization which is irrelevant because your face is covered the entire game).

    - Constant reuse of maps which are very basic to begin with.

    - Also, your Mass Effect is showing, Bungie designers. There are blatant rip offs of creatures (800lb. war hungry planet destroying heavies anyone?), weapons and mechanics. If you're going to rip something off, then you could at least put a new spin on it. Don't reanimate a dead game into a bad version of itself.

    - There are literally two plots in the main game: 1) Go here and stand by a thing and defend your droid while he decrypts the thing so you can go to a new thing. 2) Go down a dark hole and have a repetitive boss fight.

Re: story and character. I've completed the game and still don't exactly know what it was about. And I was attentive. Listening, watching every cut scene. It's apparent that little attention was paid to narrative which means no drama and cliche dialogue throughout.

Please tell me why you'd book a start like Peter Dinkledge and then do zero performance cap with him, relegating him to delivering exposition that would have been robotic even if he wasn't playing a robot.

Re: multiplayer. Forget it. Seems cool to roam around killing creatures with strangers but it gets old fast (especially when the respawn points are all the same). Even if you want to grind to level up, forget it. I was artificially stopped at lvl 19 because the game forces you to complete a plot and stop at level 20 until other criterion are met. Essentially, devoted players are handicapped.

Player vs. player multiplayer was fun insofar as it reminded me of Quake meets COD but it's nothing new and doesn't feature considered game design. Uneven player matching makes it more frustrating than your average online ganked n00b experience.

Don't buy this. Buy a pretty poster of the game art (which is wonderful). If you must buy it to see for yourself, wait a day or two. There will be a flood of used games on the market, including mine.

The game itself is very pretty and the worlds seem nicely made, but they also somehow manage to feel empty. Most missions can be completed by simply hopping on your Pike (looks like a Star Wars speeder bike) and just boosting to the objectives. The objectives themselves are mundane and monotonous. Almost every mission so far has been: Start at the hub, go to x location, let the ghost scan said objective, defend him, kill a rare mob or mini boss, repeat. The missions seem pretty short so far, with the average time being 15-20 minutes per mission.

I have done two different Raids with a couple of friends, and each one felt pretty much like a story mission, only slightly longer being around the thirty minute mark. The main reason they seem to last longer is that the bosses are damage sponges. They have several nuke type attacks that can insta-kill you so you are forced to pop in and out of cover to take your shots. While the boss fight is going on, packs of smaller mobs seem to come out at intervals. The only reason I can think they needed to do this was to give you ammo drops for the damage soaking ability of the main boss.

The Crucible, or the Player vs Player matchmaking, is overall pretty fun but there are quite a few setbacks as well. For one, the classes Super Charged attacks are essentially one hit kills against players. To me, this makes the game a lot less competitive and punishes you for just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. There are no counters to these for the most part. Sniper rifles are very strong since the game has a strong auto aim feel to it. Getting headshots isn't exactly hard to do. Auto Rifles seem to be the go to weapon and shotguns for a secondary seem like the standard setup. The maps are pretty large and well designed. If you have played Halo, you know what to expect here.

In conclusion, the game is fun, but also very average at best. For the budget that was spent on this game, it screams underwhelming. Out of 10, I would give it a 6.

The fact that it is so small, each "planet" about the size of three or four CoD MP maps strung together, would almost work in its favor if there were more to do in those tiny worlds -- but there's not. Whether you're playing through the story or farting around alone or with friends, you're going to be doing the same things in the same places in a matter of hours, the repetition setting in and growing until, around three days in, you just can't stand it anymore.

Social game, Bungie warned the reviewers. No one could possible review this game (threatening implication implied) until playing it for a week, and any site that does is "suspect!" Despite the fact that they've been reviewing games MUCH bigger, much more complex and rewarding, than Destiny for over a decade, Bungie strong-armed the press into keeping stum about the inadequacies of Destiny. And judging from user feedback (like mine, and my friends') delaying those reviews probably worked a treat for Activision/Blizzard's bottom line, because none of us would have bought this if we'd read what we all know now. Sure, some seem to love it. But just as many feel it's a cynical, under-delivery on the hyperbole that was this game's marketing campaign.

And it's a shame, because there is real talent here. If some work had been put into story, some effort into marking what competitors, from MMOs to RPGs, have been establishing as genre-standards for size of worlds and complexity of habitation. Hell, if you could simply bloody talk to the other gamers about! So much opportunity. Did Bungie think they were mixing a cocktail so potent they didn't need to meet those standard expectations? We may never know.

One thing I do know is I'll never pre-order a game again. Never. If the publishers want to play games with reviews, want to rig the game, then I'll happily wait a few weeks and see if their wares are worth buying. Especially if it's got Activision on its label.

You would get the occasional and very seldom loot but not as often to be satisfactory. In other words, I totally get the low reviews, although it does not deserve anything below 5 for sure, in my opinion the game is a 6 or 7. Technically is very good, but at this point in the history and development of games, it is lacking a lot. Maps are big but small because of a lack of differentiation from one place to another. They should have shot for something like Red Dead Redemption where you see how the map changes and it had such distinctive land marks that I can still remember the different places after so many years from it release. Honestly?

This game doesn't deserve anything higher or lower than a 5 to 7. People giving it 10's are just stupid fanboys trying to justify their $500 + dollars spent on a generic Bordlands game, and the people giving it 0's are just autistic neckbeards who want to watch this game burn. My honest score would probably be 6. It's nothing new by far, and enemies feel like HP sponges

I admit that I was really psyched for the game and I've spent far too many hours since release leveling my Titan. Unless you're willing to make this game your life just to grind gear capable of raiding and unless you're really jonesing for an archaic MMO style raid like BWL or AQ from vanilla WoW, take a flyer on Destiny and move on. For someone unwilling or unable to make those commitments, all they have to look forward to is a short, pedantic storyline, exceedingly repetitive strikes, and imbalanced, terrible, PVP matches.

It's quite a shame because the shooting elements are so very strong, yet the game is shallow for anyone not willing or able to partake in the grind fest. 6 out of 10 for being graphically stunning and with solid shooting mechanics, but it loses a lot for its terrible story and sheer repetitiveness

You have a glimmer currency but basically have nothing to spend it on. The levels in this game are worthless beyond relief. You will be a level 28 getting 1 shot by level 15 monsters still, and Bungie studio's idea of making something difficult involves making an enemy a bullet sponge and making it do a lot of hard to avoid splash damage. I've been a huge fan of Bungie ever since playing the original Halo. Their worlds have always been packed with a very focused and unique style. Their worlds have always been packed with a very focused and unique style. I remember just staring at little corners of levels in Halo CE, and really feeling the care and passion that the developers must have had for their game. The story and environments felt like more than just typical FPS narrative for the time; for some reason, I actually cared about what was happening in this universe (so much so, that I ended up reading a good portion of the Halo novels).

We all knew that Destiny would not be Halo. What I didn't know however, was that Destiny wouldn't even have Halo's level of soul and identity. I feel nothing for the world of Destiny. On the surface, its ideas are intriguing. The Traveler's interactions with humanity and the events that come after all seem to set the stage for what should be an engaging story. The art style, while not exceptionally unique, does manage to add a certain personality and look to the game. Destiny however ends up doing almost nothing with its own setting and visuals.

My character is a faceless nobody with almost no presence in the world. Every time he spoke a line of dialogue aloud, I was almost surprised. Why even bother giving a voice actor to such an uninspired and weak character? He seems to have no real motivation, no personality. Only useless comments and the occasional snarky one-liner to his Ghost. Dinklage himself gives an incredibly boring performance, but it's one that I don't think I can entirely blame him for. It's clear that bad (or maybe even absent?) directing must have had some role to play here, and the writing itself doesn't do him any favors.

The story feels dead. It's lonely. Each story mission felt more and more like some banal task for an astronaut janitor to take care of. You go to a location (that you've probably seen multiple times before), and you press square. Dinklage mumbles something about how he's using space magic to learn something about some other thing. Then you fight off waves of enemies until he's done. At the the end of the mission, Dinklage reveals that he has indeed, figured out where you need to go for your next mission. Rinse and repeat. Why is my character doing all this? To fight the Darkness. What's the darkness, and why are they bad? Well, because they are attacking the Light. Destiny's story is trying hard to combine futuristic sci-fi with mysticism, but it ends up coming off as incredibly simplistic and shallow. What lore there actually is in the universe is hidden away on Bungie.net in the form of Grimoire cards. Perhaps Destiny could have benefited from including this fiction in the actual game.

The combat is fun enough. It feels like a further evolution of Halo, with armor abilities replaced by space magic. The customization systems within the game give you some amount of control over your character, but nowhere near the levels seen in a Diablo or even a Borderlands. Gear comes with a defense stat, and sometimes cooldown reduction for your abilities. There are some additional gear effects, but they're often not truly interesting enough to really change how you play the game.

In conclusion, my biggest emotion in reaction to Destiny is pure surprise. I was expecting a Bungie game. What I got was something that feels hollow. It's as if something tore the heart and soul out of Bungie, and the withered husk was forced to produce a triple-A game. If that sounds harsh or dramatic, it's probably because my second biggest emotion right now is disappointment. Ever since the Halo franchise was handed off to 343, I've been incredibly curious and optimistic about Bungie's future. Destiny held the promise of even more greatness for the company, and the gamers who loved their work. Destiny does not hold up to that expectation. Being led through the various environments of Destiny, I did not feel the same wonder and curiosity I felt while walking around even just the bridge of the Pillar of Autumn in Halo.

The core game itself is where it comes to a screeching halt as you drudge through extremely repetitive "quests" and "scenarios" which take their toll fairly quickly. The landscape itself is fairly barren and desolate with not much at all to give any feeling of it being "alive". Bungie professes that the game doesn't truly "start" until level 20. However, at level 20 it's just more of the same repetitive gameplay and recycled locations with a mere "illusion" of variety.

It's a shame really as this game had potential to be something really special and give undeniable proof of Bungie's genius as a developer. Seeing Destiny's final delivery and presentation makes me wonder just how "lucky" Bungie had been with their Halo franchise. Maybe, MS had more to do with it's success than we may think.

To summarize, I wouldn't really recommend Destiny to friends or anything, but, I wouldn't shout out any warnings to avoid either. It's just an average shooter with a pseudo large scale scope to give the illusion of depth and involvement.

Single player? Well firstly, it's clear that this game was not designed really to be played by yourself. If you do then the repetition of the games gameplay becomes far more obvious than it would if played with your buddy(s). That becomes evident quite early on.

What this game does well is it's basic core gunplay, which is lifted wholesale from the Halo series, if it ain't broke why fix it? It certainly reminds you why Halo's gunplay was and is head and shoulders above the competition. The weaving and dodging, the fluidity and weighty feel it has translates into harmonious dance around the battle field that has simply not been bettered. To put it another way, if shigeru miyamoto made shooters, this is what it would feel like. It just feels right.

But then Halo: Combat Evolved got it right, way back in 2001. That was 13 years ago.

So what does Destiny add to the mix? Well early on Destiny feels like a stripped down Halo.
Grenades are no longer picked up on the battlefield, they are an ability that is unlocked and when used has a cool down time. Exactly what this new limitation on grenades adds to the overall combat experience I'm not sure, apart from forcing periods huddled behind a crate wishing you had a grenade to hurl at a group of enemies pinning you down (who also happen to be revelling in the fact that your grenade now has a cool down time!).
Where the Halo franchise and games like borderlands have added interesting abilities and items like hologram decoys, sentry guns even stealth kills, Destiny's tool box seems strangely far less interesting in comparison. There are no stealth kill animations (which I personally was sorry to see absent). There are power buffs, but no hologram decoys, theres a flaming golden gun... But nothing as tactically interesting as placing a sentry gun allowing you to then flank a pinned down enemy.

Then we have the Ai. Which is ok (not great) but does the job, when allowed to do it. Unfortunately Bungie has seen fit to tether enemy groups to an exact location and will not venture further than a few metres away from said location. This means enemies shooting at you from 100m across the battlefield will never move from that spot or attempt to move in on your location and flush you out. So combat only seems work as it should when in close proximity (a few metres, or same room) with an enemy group. When you are, enemies are able to behave far more intelligently, and move around, take cover and sometimes flank you. Mid to long range battles are more a case of the enemy taking cover or moving position within the boundaries of their assigned position on the map. There are no patrolling enemies in this game unfortunately. One example that stuck out for me was in Old Russia, I came across a Hive 'Knight' who was standing under a bridge in a small pond. No matter how threatened or what was throne at him, he barely moved a metre from that location. The most apt analogy I can think of is a Rottweiler chained to a post in a field whilst you stand at a distance taking pot shots at with your gun! Thankfully not all boss, or mini boss encounters are as painfully dumb as that experience. Wizards move around (at least a little!)!
Another BIG problem comes from a lack of randomisation. Enemies no matter what mission you are doing spawn in the exact same locations on the planet map you are playing.... Every single time you play! This inevitably leads to a feeling of repetition. So far I would have to say that this is one of the key problems Destiny has.
Random placing of enemy groups could have made the world of difference in keeping things fresh and less predictable and less repetitive. Let's hope Bungie will perhaps fix this in an update?

I haven't been able to fully explore the customisation of my character yet, but seeing other players around the Hub world leads me to believe that there's is an adequate range of options available.
The beautifully realised sandbox environments are excellent, and genuinely atmospheric. Although they sometimes do feel rather empty. Exploration seems unnecessary when theres so little loot to find out in the open!

So far Destiny's core gameplay even with the problems I've mentioned are what see's you through and compels you to play on. When combat works as it should, there's few shooters out there's that can really hold a candle to Halo's and indeed Destiny's gunplay mechanics.

But Destiny's experience remains a continuing juxtaposition. It can sometimes come off feeling a little too thin, various components that make a convincing whole are lacking, but then the game kicks again and you are pulled back in, forgetting why only moments ago you were feeling like the whole thing was a becoming a grind.

Why? Why in an "MMO" do I not have the option to matchmake for EVERYTHING?! If I want to do ANYTHING beyond Level 24, I have to go onto Forums asking for people to add me so I can add them to a Fireteam so that we can do anything beyond this point.
This game is so unfinished I have an armor shader called "18327496-64703388" instead of having a name! I do not expect to be playing a game and come across such glaring faults, that are so easy to fix that it's already in other parts of the game (you can matchmake for PVP and lower level strikes but for some reason they've taken it away here!!!).
Now, for the good stuff. The music is incredible! I want the soundtrack to this entire game now. It is gripping and adds such ambiance to the entire game that it might actually overshadow the game-play at times when you think "That's it?!" after beating a boss.
The art, oh my sweet lord, the art is amazing. I was with my friends in a Skype Call the first time I was on the Moon and as the level loaded we all fell silent in stunned admiration as we looked around.
This is about all that is good. As I said, with friends this game is quite enjoyable.
Alone however, you will find yourself raging and pushing yourself through the endless grind.
End game content is the EXACT SAME GRIND that you did to get to Level 20, just at a harder difficulty.
The true end game content at Level 26 when you get the raid, can't be accessed and is nigh on impossible unless you have 5 other friends with you who have also managed to reach this point in the fog that is the endless grind where I still don't see an end with a level 25 Titan and my Warlock and Hunter which I only play when my friends are on.
I'm sorry. I truly am to people who like me were expecting more. But if you don't have a group of friends who are willing to play this game with you, or you don't want to play with people you just met on a forum with teamspeak, I implore you, do NOT buy this game.
You will waste your money, you will waste your time and you will just lose more and more faith in game developers as you see more games release a game, but scrap half it's content so you can pay for it as DLC later.

Unfortunately destiny was very lackluster when it came to these things. First the multiplayer is too casual for any kind of competitive person. It doesn't take too much skill and it was clearly designed for the casual gamer. Next the gameplay to me felt stale. It was like call of duty at 30 FPS with space gun sound effects. Next the story is gripping at all. During the cutscenes nothing was really gripping and for even some of them I'd get up and eat a snack while the characters who I don't even know or care about are talking about something else I don't care about .The worst part was the repetitiveness of the missions. About every mission is go press X and let your ghost scan something while you shoot about 3 waves of enemies. It does that about 15 times in the campaign.

The game tries to be a little bit of everything. It has FPS elements, MMO elements, and other things but in the end it isn't enough to satisfy.

Perhaps in 2 years we will see this game in a more content rich vein but the lowest common denominator gameplay needs desperate attention. Every encounter is dead in the water due basic mob behaviour.

The menus are easy to navigate and laid out well. The outstanding stops there. The gameplay is functional, albeit monotonous and not very original. The movement feels a lot like Halo 3, which would be a compliment 7 years ago when that game came out, but now it feels a little clunky and slow. Today, we should expect FPS games to have flawless, silky-smooth movement like Black Ops 2 or Titanfall (easily the most fluid FPS in existence). Still, it's not terrible. It's completely functional. The crucible (competitive multiplayer) can be fun, but frustrating. It is suffering from some serious balancing issues, but, overall, it plays well enough. It's enjoyable (it's likely a lot less enjoyable when playing by yourself, but I try to not play online games without friends anymore). The good/mediocre end there. Here's the bad. Weapons variation is almost non-existent. There are pretty much 2 different weapons for each weapon-class (auto-rifle, scout rifle, sniper, shotgun, etc). The "different" ones have the Borderlands effect, where they all are the same thing but with a different color scheme or slightly different weapon effect. However, I do like the weapon upgrade system, even if the game never explains how you upgrade them (you just kind of happen upon upgrades as you use the gun). The classes are pretty much different flavors of the same thing. They'll try and tell you that each class has a wide variety of different abilities, but they lie. Each class has a grenade, a special melee, and a super ability. All grenades are pretty much the same (they blow stuff up), and upgraded melees are kinda the same (you get knocked out from slightly further away), and all supers have the same endgame (all the dudes in a small area suddenly die). The Hunter's gunslinger and Warlock's sunsinger supers are really the only different ones, so I'll give them credit on that.
Let's get to the horrific, the down-right insulting: the story. The "story" (I use quotes because what they call a story wouldn't pass for a story in the terrible, cheesy books featuring Fabio on the cover lining the wall next to the register at Walgreen's). There's no story at all. You're a dude (or a dudet) who has a Robo-Dinklage sidekick, you travel around from skybox to skybox (fantastic skyboxes, however) doing boring, monotonous missions in the same area (at least 4 to 5 times per area; it gets old really fast) fighting the same enemies, and you're objective 100% of the time is to get to an area, plug your robot thing into a console, and defend the area. It's like they didn't try. The "strike" missions can be fun (extra missions at the end of an area in which you fight several bosses), but it makes me angry that the rest of the game's story isn't like them. It's like they were designing a Multiplayer-only game like Titanfall, but then realized that they should probably have some "story" to market the game's expansion packs on, so people think they're getting more than just multiplayer map packs.
Overall, the game isn't horrendous, but it doesn't live up to the hype. It's not a 2, it's not a 1, it's certainly not a 0, but anyone giving the game a 9 or a 10 is unable to get out of the trailers and the teasers. You're kidding yourselves. 6/10 is a very fair score for a game that I'm playing so I can give an honest review, and because several of my friends are still living in the world of the trailers and teasers.

Just there. It's not a bad game and for some reason I keep going back to it just pushing a bit further, but none of the expectations I had for this game were met. Single player missions felt repetitive and the story still does not make any sense.

On the other hand, strikes are enjoyable and raids are challenging. And while we wait for the big November releases, this is an ok option.

Destiny is a competent game. It is not any shade of spectacular. Playing through it evoked games past, a mixture of Borderlands and Diablo. Examining the content, I didn't see anything new mechanically.

    Mechanics:
Cooldown based abilities that are unlocked as you level, three standard fantasy classes (rogue, warrior, wizard), a limit of active abilities available at one time (similar to Diablo 3's system), certain weapons that level up as they are used (similar to the special weapons in Darksiders 2 and Torchlight 2), weapons and armor of various calibers as loot. A 'super' power for each class.

So far, solid treaded ground. This has been done before, and it has worked. It works again here, but without much 'new' added to the mix it's a retread rather than trailblazing.

    Gameplay:
The gunplay wasn't stellar. It was less responsive than either Halo or Call of Duty in terms of weapon switching, reloading, animation smoothness and weight, and trigger responsiveness. The ammunition system is fine, with standard ammo, special ammo, and heavy ammo matching a weapon type (a feature I enjoyed in Red Faction 2), but again doesn't go beyond anything we've seen before.

    Levels:
They are spotted with enemy spawns. Enemies will simply pop into existence at their spawn location about a minute after they were killed, in full view. This can lead to rather uncomfortable circumstances if someone cleared the area before you, and the respawn happens while you are standing in the middle of the spawn location. There are also repeated caverns that serve no purpose other than to house lone bosses that can be high enough level that you cannot damage them or the occasional chest.

There is lots of retreading the same areas for multiple quests, and the order of quests makes it so you need to back track instead of clearing an area all at once.

Loading times are common and long. Each transition can take up to a minute, and transitioning from a planet to the base or after a disconnect quickly becomes tiresome.

    Encounters:
Enemies are simple. Each name has a set of associated properties, such as melee attacks, a shield, a sniper rifle, and so forth. They attack directly, sometimes flee into the open, and otherwise don't indicate much AI cleverness. The Elites from Halo 1 and 2 felt much more responsive - in tactics and self preservation.

The way they are used is also repetitive. Overland enemies are there as mobs to soak up time and provide experience grind. Quality items rarely drop for these encounters.
During missions they are roadblocks that add clock to reaching the boss near the end, usually by actually being the element preventing the player from proceeding: the way forward is blocked by some obstacle / computer / device, and the player's Ghost needs time to hack / modify / detonate the obstruction. That 'time' is actually 'kill X waves of these enemies that are higher level than in the overworld'.
In event missions found on the overworld, it's another version of 'hold this point for X time' or 'defend the generator for X waves' of increasingly levelled enemies.

A large issue with the opponents is that difficulty is merely presented by their numbers going up. More damage, more shields, more damage resistance. I saw no indication of different weapons, equipment or behaviors, and that's boring. Using the same tactics will win you the day, as long as your numbers are within reasonable distance of their numbers.

The multiplayer is, again, competent but nothing special. It's team based and with a chance for loot at the end of each match. Vehicles are absurd within the mode, and the level design isn't polished nor inclusive of verticality.

    MMO:
Maybe. It's an instanced game world where there might be some number of players in your zone, usually less than 4. Seeing them there helps break the immersion of the game, since the story revolves around the guardians being rare and set upon all sides by enemies, but jumping out into a mission that only 'you, the player' can take care of and seeing another couple players with the same instruction shatters the narrative reason for being there.

    Narrative:
It's loose. The main character is mostly silent, despite the potentially interesting lore bleeding into every matte painting around each level. Combined with the lack of personality of the main, supporting, and background characters, there is very little engagement to be had in what could be a rich fictional world. As mentioned above, seeing other players on the same mission as yourself when the previous cutscene explicitly told you that no other guardians were able to respond breaks the immersion even further.

With nice visuals, sounds and extremely solid gameplay mechanics but that's pretty much all that can be positively said about this game. The story is very repetitive, with the same missions carried out in different settings over and over. The length of the story is very short and there's really no incentive whatsoever to veer off the main story path and explore. There will be hidden caves with higher end enemies inside them. An obvious place to have some decent loot right? Nope. Nothing.

The Strike missions are in all fairness an enjoyable experience when played with friends, but the distinct lack of chat support makes it pointless trying to team up with other individuals. Not that you'll actually need to as on normal difficulty the game can be played with eyes closed. And on Hard difficulty only certain enemies are moderately tricky, sure the bosses will take a lot longer to down but there's little danger of dying.

The PVP aspect of the game has some potential with the very solid shooting mechanics. The map designs are by no means great and could do with some good verticality put into them but in the main they are decent layouts. However, any fun that may be had in the crucible is quickly sucked away by the inclusion of the super moves. I understand they are trying to add something different to the game but 1 hit kill moves that are practically impossible to fight against and obliterate everything on screen instantly are not the way to go about it. The 1 hit kill shotgun is vastly overpowered and is unanswerable in close quarters. Overall it's just an extremely unbalanced pvp multiplayer with limited maps and limited game modes. At the very least i'd expect a "hardcore" vanilla mode, with the option to play without the ridiculous super powers and perhaps the mini-map which negates any potential stealth approach to gameplay.

Overall, A well built game that seriously lacks any ideas other than go to point A defend against a horde then kill a boss and with terrible unbalanced pvp.

A 0 out of 10 game means it's unplayable you **** morons. Angry halo fan boys getting themselves too hyped for this game then when it doesn't deliver they get butt-hurt and give it a 0 out of 10 while not explaining why. That being said yes, Destiny is a disappointment to the hype that was built around it, Obviously. But the thing is it's not THAT bad. Destiny offers a good amount of hours of entertainment. At least until level 20. The story is bland and uninteresting at best. Nothing is explained and you will often find yourself going "what the hell is happening?" throughout the story missions. Your character is given no motive to do anything he does and doesn't even really comment on anything going on around him despite being dead for who knows how long. The game-play is solid. Nothing special but done right. There are 3 classes to choose from. All three are very very similar with only slight differences in them. They all play the same except for the 3 main different ability's. Besides that it's all really based on what you want your character to look like. Do you want a robe for a warlock or a cape for a hunter. Maybe even some cool space armor for the titan. The games missions are really lazy. Almost every single mission you will play will require you to defend your ghost against a certain amount of waves of enemies. Usually 3. This does get tired some late game and you would just wish for a mission where you do stuff instead of standing there defending for the entire game. Strikes are fun even though there the same as normal missions but offer more of a challenge. But late game they will get repetitive as you must do the same strikes over and over to progress after 20. A lot of the game feels like content was taken out just to add it in for expansions later. I don't know if that is true but if it is i would not be surprised if it was activation that did that. Replay value dies when you hit level 20 because that point you have to just replay missions and strikes which all play the same. Just defend your ghost. I was very surprised when i found out that i just beat the game at the end. I was expecting more than 3 enemy factions and more planets to explore. The final boss and level is completely disappointing that you might not even know that it was the final level in the story. That sucks. During my play-through of the game i did find myself having fun while playing with my friends. I love the seamless co-op and random interactions with other players in the game. The graphics look good but i would have loved to see them if they were not held back by the PS3 and Xbox 360. The PVP is really fun and is the only thing that will really keep you playing the game after 20. I went into this game with low expectations. I refused to give into the crazy hype of this game and didn't really follow it at all. I bought it with a friend to try it out thinking it was just another Halo. To my surprise i had more fun than i thought i would have and got some good hours of game-play out of it. Yes its disappointing in a lot of areas and gets super repetitive real fast. But it isn't the 0 out of 10 people are telling you. Expand

I've been playing Destiny since release. I hadn't heard anything about this game before I got it, and I've never played Halo before. I had no expectations before I started, and I saw right away that this game has potential for unlimited expansions.

The game looks pretty, and you get a feeling you're in the world of which Destiny takes place. A world based on the solar system. For such a small game, it seems very big, and it can expand as Bungie wants. The first and foremost feature of Destiny is the co-operation. You can play story, strike, raid and crucible with your friends. This feature is intertwined very well and is the strongest feature of Destiny alongside the visual graphics.

The crucible is the player vs. player part of the game, and most of it is entertaining. There are several modes to play, like Control, which is not so good, mostly because of imbalance in some of the maps, which makes it much more challenging just because you were assigned to the wrong side. The maps with the worst balance from my experience is Firebase Delphi, Mars and Blind Watch, Mars, in if you start at the wrong team, you get a much harder challenge to win. The Clash which is 6 vs. 6 is enteraining all the way, and usually never boring. The salvage I tried but the teams I've met have been so much more superior that I haven't really got into it enough to say how entertaining it is. Skirmish I have not tried yet, but it is 6 players everyone vs. everyone.

Controls in Destiny is not the best. Your run is on your control button, L3 by default and it seems a very weird choice after playing it for weeks. The rest of the controls seems fine.

The content of Destiny story-wise is crippled into the story already starting off the wrong way compared to what was planned. The breeds different stories are merged into one breeds story and there are cut-scenes taken out of the game because story is taken out of the game. The original plan seems to be ditched in order for this game to be released.

Destiny also have problems when playstation network is having problems, and Destiny also have problems with their own servers in periods.

Lagging players also causes issues to balance when they are lagging in crucible making games less entertaining.

All in all Destiny has a solid base to be something more, but currently is not.

Bungie also have a few things to explain with their current campaign Iron Banner and their Level Advantages Enabled, which according to experience and other players impression is so small that it can't be noticed for any difference. I also have this impression after hours after hours playing Iron Banner.

I don't know who's in charge of Destiny and what content it should have, but for Destiny to last, they should probably looks for a new coordinator.

There's a good chunk of content although very disjointed and uneven.

The UI is excellent - the art work, design, etc. very fluid. It speaks volumes and it sure looks like a lot of effort went into this. Although it's a little incomplete in some areas - it still excels here.

    The Bad:

The story is mediocre to non-existent. The PVP is imbalanced and lacking polish you would come to expect from FPS Veterans like Bungie.

There's not enough variety, locations, and the worlds simply aren't big enough to be considered an "MMO" and very repetitive and bland to be considered a top-shelf FPS. A great FPS Titanfall comes to mind in which the planets (maps) you visit all seem alive full of life (NPCs, creatures, etc.) - Destiny lacks that.

    The Ugly:

The game is too repetitive - there simply better co-op games and loot driven games for the ps4 right now - diablo comes to mind.

The boss fights are overly simplistic and they are mostly rehash with different models for the most part.

There is nothing special or varied about this game and most of the tasks become mundane and repetitive to a point where playing further can seem punishing.

    In Conclusion:

Bugnie has made a very pretty, albeit empty world. I found myself wanting to know more about the enemy, more about my hero, and just more in general. It felt like playing a glorified beta in which everything I tested worked fine, but in the end I wanted my $60.00 back. There are free to play games such as Warframe, and paid games such as Diablo 3 that offer more replay-ability and more content - as well as better co-op.

I think they set themselves up for failure being too ambitious they would have been better off doing a full blown Sci-fi story Halo clone. They could have implemented a great single player experience with their current map selection and offered a robust multiplayer with many match types and scenarios - everything would be fine. Instead we're left with a shell of what could have been waiting for DLC/content that will most likely require some sort of fee which I would be ok with had I not paid so much for the initial admission.

I could go on for hours about other "mmo"-like games that are available free to play that offer just as much content and much more than what is "Destiny". For one Planet Side 2 is coming out very soon and I think that's one reason Sony hasn't released it yet because that game alone would put even more stress on this game - Destiny does not live up to the hype or standards set forth by other games.

Destiny is a good game, one of the most fun games I have played in recent memory. However in the great scheme of things, it is a disappointing, soulless game that lost the potential being the next blockbuster franchise.

Okay time to start with the story....okay where's the story? You spent 500 million dollars of this "best game ever" and you didn't even try to have a story? Okay okay story isn't as important as gameplay. However, they have this big, beautiful universe with all these gorgeous worlds. But there is no soul in these worlds, we aren't given any characters to remember or interact with. The aliens have no motivations or features that set them apart. No motivations nothing. You feel lost, confused, and like you are just touring these worlds instead of being part of these worlds.

Now the gameplay. It's awesome! The three classes are very hard choices to decide from (Titan, Hunter, and Warlock) and level progression is satisfying. You feel like you have so much power with all the weapons, special grenades, and the super charged moves. Upgrades in armor, guns, and your abilities feel great. The mobility you have is fantastic, with the spearow and your own floating abilities. Gun control is near perfect, excellent shooting and gun weight. Its just very satisfying.

Mission structure is horrendous. There is one mission type and it is just endless grinding. Strikes are even more of a mess. Long boss battles with high amounts of health and very little damage is taken by them. Its just bad game design and after the first world you get sick of the main campaign repetitive missions. Enemies are recycled and it feels like the same mission over and over. Leveling up after 20 is just awful. The stupid light armor thing in order to go past 20 is a timewaster and takes away from being what you want to look like. Loot drops are completely random and almost unfair, just so you put more time into the game.

The multiplayer saves the game. Competitive is a joy to play and is very addicting as well. There is a sense of teamwork actually in this mode. Play it yourself, you won't be disappointed.

    The Good
    + Beautiful Graphics
    + Fun Gunplay
    + Great weapons and abilities
    + Multiplayer is a joy
+ Co-op makes story mission a little better
+ Free updates should eventually expand the game

    The Bad
    - No soul in this world or story
    - Repetitive missions/ long strikes
    - Recycled enemies
    - Random loot
    - DLC! Buy, buy, buy!
    - Major Disappointment (500 million dollars spent here!?!?)

Score 6.8/10 (Rounded to a 7) Destiny is a extremely fun game but it lacks the fundamentals. With no effort in story, repetitive missions, recycled enemies, and a lack of soul, Destiny goes from being potentially one of the best games ever to a barely better than okay game.

I've done every single PVP map, every single Strike on all four Vanguard difficulties (18, 20, 22, 24), and, frankly, I've reached a point where I can't see a reason to play anymore. Gear wise, going from 26 to 30 in raid gear isn't going to make the content any more trivial because the content was trivial from the onset. We don't even know when or if another raid will be coming. So where's the incentive to spend hours on end raiding when existing legendary gear is already more than adequate to make the game utterly trivial? The forthcoming events aren't the same as content, they're just going to be events similar to what we saw with Halo and Waypoint where players will get mildly tweaked rewards for doing things within the EXISTING content. Other than Vault of Glass, which, technically, is already in game just not yet unlocked, all future game expanding content for Destiny WILL be locked behind a paywall and likely won't require previous raid level gear because they won't want to alienate or fragment their playerbase.

The lack of a coherent story, the lack of social elements, and the sheer repetition of the game - far worse than any current MMO on the market - is appalling. Also, since this seems to keep being brought up, anyone who says this game should be rated higher because it's "just like Diablo 3" are ignorant to the differences in genre. They're basing their comparison simply because both games have loot. Diablo 3 and Borderlands are dungeon crawlers. You aren't doing the dungeons in Diablo 3 over and over again to unlock a new tier of content. That's the difference. Destiny gates future content behind a slow gear grind like MMOs. To compare the two is utterly disingenuous. In one dungeon in Diablo, you'll return to town several times with bags full of gear; In one strike in Destiny, you'll be lucky if you see two to three useless greens and one uncommon blue at the end. Even if the comparison were remotely apt, Diablo 3 has more content in the FIRST TWO ACTS than Destiny does in the WHOLE GAME.

The sad reality is Destiny is a next-gen version of Defiance: Good combat system, but with a head-scratching story, convoluted leveling system, half-arsed public events, bland loot system, poorly designed social functions, horribly balanced PVP, lackluster early end game, and a developer with an inflated ego about how "groundbreaking" their game supposedly is. I suppose Destiny gets a bit better marks for having more than one map but I don't think it has that much more effective playing area.

If you can only afford one, buy Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition. Although it's a different sub-genre, Diablo 3 contains far more content, far more replayability, and a far more rewarding experience than Destiny. Redbox or GameFly Destiny, play it up till you've gotten a couple light levels, then take/send it back. You will have seen the whole package - a couple of times, no less - by doing so.

I looked over the skill tree and there's not much to even look forward to like you later can triple jump instead of double jump. You can't even sprint while reloading, I figured that would be some lame skill you get later on, but I didn't even see that anywhere. The game has aim-assist, which is totally unneeded and there's no way to turn it off. The sensitivity of the camera is too freaking slow, I maxed it out at 10 and I still wanted it like twice as sensitive. The only plus the game has is that you can slide, which is really only good in competitive MP, not so much vs AI.

It seems like Bungie is trying to make Destiny be everything for everyone while being nothing for no one. They got the MMO and co-op aspect. It seems like they are trying to be a bit like Borderlands with classes and powers. The classes aren't different enough and the powers are very underwhelming. The only place I think the game may actually shine is in competitive because it's a decent-to-good shooter and building up your "power" would be fun in competitive. Even upgrading your skills should work in competitive because none of them will make you overpowered really.

I kinda knew this game would be very underwhelming from last year's E3 developer interview where they were saying as a positive that all the classes weren't very different so you'd never regret making the wrong choice, which defeats the whole purpose of classes. And I remember one of the devs was like "we're Bungie and we make great games, so Destiny is gonna be great." This game is pretty much the definition of over-hyping. The issues are quite apparent as soon as you start playing. Enemies are made to be kinda slow and bullet-spungy in order to avoid network lag and allow for co-op shooting experience. If the team isn't focusing fire or has poor gear, fights can drag on and get annoying (think "just scored 50 headshots and the health bar went down by 20%"). There's quite a lot of grinding going on too as you won't get the best weapons without redoing areas. From the immersion side, since it's got those MMO bits in it, your character is essentially a meaningless "random dude no. 5001", so no "manifest Destiny" here, just keep grinding away with the rest.

Seems the Borderlands Pre-Sequel might a better choice for co-op shooter fans that like items, skill trees, etc.

What really hurts me are three things: first the weapons are pretty boring and seem like CoD-copies. They look futuristic because of all that white but it's like playing with normal guns. That's disappointing especially if you think of Halo's creative weapons.
Second the variety of loot is pretty poor. There are kinda like 5 different shapes of how the gear can look like and in a grinding-focused game that's not enough. Also I really miss the feeling to explore and loot stuff in the world. Most times it's not worth it to leave the quest-paths simply because the world is pretty empty.
The last thing bothering me are the classes and stats. Yeah they got different grenades and skills but for the most part they play pretty similar and the fact that the most bonuses you can actually get are pretty boring 'reload faster' 'have more ammo' perks just doesn't make it any better. Say what you want but the variety of skills and passives in Borderlands is way better and less generic.
All in all Destiny is an 'okay-game' but it doesn't live up to the hype. If I had to choose again I would pretty much wait until it's cheaper before I try it but it really isn't worth a day-one-buy.

Destiny is not an awful game. However, it is far from good, and all things considered it is likely one of the biggest letdowns in my entire gaming lifetime. I want to be having fun, but I simply am not.

Let's start with the positives to mollify the dissonant fans trying to justify their purchase and hype:
+ The lore itself, strictly the lore, is fantastic. See negatives for why this was a horribly missed opportunity.
+ The music is engaging, I think I may pick up the OST regardless of the game itself.
+ The gameplay itself does feel satisfying at first, it only sours when you realize this is *all* there is.

And now, sadly, the laundry list of negatives that led to my score:
    - The story might as well not be there. I'm serious. I have played RPGs with the budget of Destiny's daily donut allowance that had better stories than this. Six missions into the game I realized I still had no idea what I was doing, why I should care, or who anyone was. That is COMPLETELY unacceptable for a high school writing project, let alone a game that cost 500 million dollars. People are saying it's like Mass Effect. *Please*. From the get-go in Mass Effect, and indeed any RPG worth its salt, you feel like you're part of a greater story and constantly have a feeling of drive and motivation. Destiny's motivation: to slog through 30 hours of gameplay to reach level 20 where supposedly the actual "game" begins.

    - Several big name voice actors were hired for this project, the biggest of which was Peter Dinklage to play your personal "Ghost". I have to say, the only person more bored with the game during my playthrough was Peter Dinklage. Every single line he gave was basically flat and uninspired, and I really don't blame him for this at all--the script he was given was piss poor.

    - Missions are beyond formulaic. I've played games purported to be formulaic. I even enjoyed Dragon Age II's original, crappy missions because at least I felt like I had a sense of purpose. Destiny's missions all boil down as follows: short exposition from Dinklebot during the opening loading screen that tells you why you should care, even though there's no setup so everything is out of the blue. Then you get dumped into the starting area which is identical between all missions on that planet. You go to your target, constantly activating Dinklebot to find your disappearing waypoint. You may run into monsters far above your level because you took the *wrong* direct path to your target and get splattered. Then you kill a bunch of stuff, reach a limited-respawn zone, then kill a bunch of stuff while Ghost hacks something. You kill the bullet-sponge boss, get a 30-second countdown, get 1-2 pieces of randomized loot at the end, go back to the tower.

    - PvP is a mess. Everyone's been harping on about that so I won't go much further.

    - For such a social game, there are several extremely conspicuous blunders that made them gamebreakers for me. For one, given the game is very clearly balanced for Fireteam play rather than solo, joining and inviting to Fireteams is *extremely* roundabout. Overall, during my time I sent out maybe 40 invites to Fireteams (and made my own public), and I had *one* person actually join for a few minutes. There's no local chat, *two* emotes, and so few people are in the shard/instance of your planet that odds are most people will be over-leveled or under-leveled compared to you.

    - Apparently the game only really opens up close or at level 20. I don't see how anyone can offer this as an excuse. I refuse to pay 60 dollars and 30 hours of my life on the promise that it gets better later on. Endgame is what should *keep you coming back*, not what motivates you. It baffles me how this can be offered as an excuse, as what this says is "we acknowledge that the leveling is **** the story is uninspired, and the socialization is poor."

Of course, many who praise the game accuse people like me of hating gear grind, of hating FPS/RPG hybrids, of all sorts of ad hominem things. Son, I was grinding gear in Diablo while you were being potty trained. RPGs and shooters are my gaming passion, and given how much I was promised for Destiny, it is one of the biggest let downs of all gaming time for me. It's not a bad game--it's a competent shooter. However it's laughable how Activision and Bungie are planning a ten year development cycle for this game. Unless there are serious changes (and the story is retconned and rewritten, which we all know won't happen) this game is just going to be another fizzle-out like Titanfall and Firefall.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Im giving this game a positive review because I enjoy the game. However, there are reasons I wouldn't give it any more then a 6. This game is NOT an MMO. The lack of proximity chat makes this game a single player experience with other people. There is NO way to cooperate without actual communication and the emoticon controls are never used. I think this is a HUGE oversight. Another thing is the story. I honestly find myself struggleing to even care about the traveler or any of the "characters". When you first goto the reef and meet the queen, I litterally had no idea why I should care about her what she was doing or why we even had to do this besides progressing the plot. Which I am still not even sure there is a plot besides accept mission A, Do objective B then get a reward. With no continutity aside from MINOR story moving points that are achieved far between. I think the voice acting could have been better but thats minor. I think my major concern for the game is why the story sucks so bad? This is bungie for crying out loud. I cannot understand why I do not like the story. I don't even know what the minor goal for this game is besides push back the darkness which is incredibly vague. The story should have been the most important part but I just dont care about the literally 3 characters in this game. ANywho, the graphics are great, multiplayer is fun and I enjoy PLAYING the game a lot. Worth the purchase but I may hold off on getting excited on the next one until they can make me care to play the 20-30 hour story campaign. Expand

Meaning: The game gets better at certain levels --> 5 then 10 and then 20.

This forces the user to "waste" time playing the game, in stead of simply enjoying the leveling aspect. The game is still repetitive, but with better tools(weapons/armor) the levels open up, and you don't have to waste time grinding. I had played the game for several hours, tried all 3 classes, but only after level 7++ did I start to enjoy roaming the system.

In other games the player is constantly rewarded for grinding on each player-level, and not in increments of say: 5..

I was expecting more of an epic battle game involving taking back the solar system with many other guardians holding and pushing back the hordes, but what I got was a very small MMO format summed up with either choosing PvE or PvP. In fact, you don't see many other guardians fighting along side with you as you progress through your missions most times no one, maybe one, maybe three, and that's it. For each planet, you get one large map and you traverse this back and forth until you finish five mission. Most glaring is that there is no story. At one point, more than half-way through the game, you think you started an actual story, but then you realize it's nothing more than just an embellished fetch quest which will play out just like you other fifteen missions did. Multiplayer is just like any other. Fun for about twenty-minutes, then you're bored. At least for me. I do know people who play multiplayer games 24/7, so for those, you might enjoy this game quite a lot. And multiplayer is important in this game because it's the only way you can get the points necessary to purchase new items once you reach level 20. One item will cost you 25-50 points, which means you need to win 25-50 multiplayer matches. For me, I would have to play over 200 multiplayer matches to buy one cape. So to sum this up, the game has been as good as an experience as any other multiplayer aspect of a game; good for a few days, then I'm bored with it. I'm a little disappointed. Expand

The hype machine was strong with this one but unfortunately the game failed to live up to the hype. This review is based purely on single-player and PvE experience as I have yet to delve into the PvP content.

The main problem with Destiny stems from the basic pitfall which arises in almost any genre--it's repetitive, to a fault. Everything from the story to the gameplay to the music feels as if it has been done a million times before and that's because it has. This isn't necessarily a bad quality. Games like Diablo or WoW or even most MOBA games relish in their repetitiveness. The formula for these games is to hold a constant carrot-on-a-stick for the players to entice them to keep playing and keep advancing their characters. Destiny attempts to accomplish the same thing but misses out on much of the charm of the aforementioned games.

To begin with, the story feels rather uninspired and souless. Characters are not compelling and, while the history of the universe seems interesting and unique, seldom is the player actually made to care for it. To compound this problem, the plot is a standard "save the world" storyline and does little to deviate or revise upon that narrative. For Bungie, a company which is known for their elaborate and fascinating narratives, Destiny is huge step backwards.

The core gameplay itself is very solid, though not entirely innoative. Progression feels very fluid and natural. Players are given missions (similar to quests in games like WoW or Diablo), most of which are unlocked in subsequent order, in which they partake to earn rewards and experience. Again, the repetitive factor must be taken into account, as variation and innovation in mission design is stale and uninspired. The challenge to take down many mobs or even elite mobs seems the same with little variety thrown in. Most elite mobs wield extremely powerful weapons which force players to take cover every few seconds. This results in long and often tedious encounters and while there are technically three separate classes, their abilities and play styles all result in the same basic tactics--shoot until you are hit and then take cover to regen your shield. Rinse and repeat ad nauseum until the mob(s) is/are dead.

This boring play style is made even worse by the fact that the three classes are not separated by any unique play styles as should be expected from any game with multiple classes. This is where the real failure of Destiny lies. A game like Borderlands, for all of its faults, manages to accomplish the task of creating unique player classes. A gunzerker could run and gun and rely on life steal/extreme toughness to survive. An assassin could go stealth to get out of combat or into a more advantageous position. With Destiny, none of these options are viable. The only viable strategy is to take some pot shots and then take cover. To this end, Destiny is a failure of game design.

Still, the feeling of an open world, MMO environment makes up for some of the pitfalls. Groups in Destiny are known as Fireteams and can consist of up to four separate players. Players won't have trouble finding groups, even random ones, to team up and take on missions. This may be the one factor that saves Destiny from being one of the biggest blunders in video games history, as the game is greatly enhanced when playing with other people.

The other thing of note is the graphics, which are among the best of the next-gen consoles. Unfortunately, the same can not be said about the art direction, as most maps and missions take place in dilapidated or destroyed environments and buildings. Still, the graphical output is fantastic to look at and brings the production qualities of the game up a notch.

At the end of the day, Destiny is a mediocre product which offers little in the way of innovation. It has serviceable gameplay and a solid multiplayer atmosphere. Outside of these things, it's a lesser Borderlands (and for the record, I don't even think Borderlands is that great of a game either).

PROS: Great graphics, solid core gameplay, fluid character progression, strong music, strong multiplayer experience.

CONS: Extremely Repetitive, redundant combat tactics, limited options, classes feel unimportant, bland environments.

The campaign, or story, well, forget the story. It's not worth caring about in all honesty. So then there's the gameplay. 4 worlds, numerous missions, but all of them amount to running through shooting the AI enemies or using your powers until killing the final enemy in the mission. Every mission is the same. All you want to do is earn glimmer and xp so that you can upgrade powers or weapons and level up. After which it becomes a monster grind at level 20. Or hope you get some better loot at the end. The whole game is based on this. Even the PvP which consists of the usual run of the mill modes. Capture and hold style "Control", Team Deathmatch etc. But in the PVP it regularly comes down to who has the better gear and better powers that wins the fight. And the least lag. When it's close, it's pretty good, but like I said, it's not ground-breaking gameplay at all. It's a decent shooter but seemingly designed to be played in the same way, over and over, doing the same repetitive missions, just get loot. And it's been designed to have you do this for the long haul. It wouldn't be so bad if the missions were exciting and PvP was more intuitive and offered more rewards like the missions. But that's where the grind comes in. I'm actually so hooked on the game, and grinding, and hoping for a bigger more powerful gun, that I actually can't even be bothered with the campaign now. I've gotten to end of the moon missions which is about halfway. Really no desire to carry on with it. Which then means either PvP or some co-op single strike/raid missions. All of which consist of the same thing, in the hope of better loot, or more grinding to get more credits/vanguard credits/crucible credits etc, so that you can buy some rare legendary gear after you hit level 20. Which requires grinding repetitive gameplay....

Yes it looks gorgeous and it's designed beautifully, sounds great, feels tight but, well, it's just oh so uninspiring and repetitive. And it does require the long long haul and a lot of your time if you want to get the most exotic gear and max out all the characters but the gameplay just isn't that gripping. Which is where I think it falls short. And it isn't as satisfying as Borderlands is, or as funny, or as diverse, and ultimately not as rewarding when you compare the amount of time needed investing in it, or as pleasurable.

Worth playing but unless you're committed to doing the rather uninspiring same thing over and over for the foreseeable future then I can't really say you'll be getting much out of it. And then there's the fact it's online only. Me, I'll probably play it for another week or two then trade it in. PS4 version reviewed.

This game has been made with a certain amount of laziness/thoughtlessness. This is immediately apparent from the character creation screen. There are only three races, each one having several faces, hair, etc to select from. Not a great deal of effort has been put into this by Bungie. This is most apparent when you realise that you can't even change the view of your character when creating them so that you can actually see what the different hairstyles etc are going to look like. It's also worth pointing out that there is no option to name your character, so you will simply be introduced to any other players in the world by your Sony/Microsoft account name. Again this is lazy and shows a lack of thought for the player's experience.

This laziness is continued by the limited number of locations and landscapes in the game. Destiny really is a very small world. And it's a world of repetition. Go to point A, shoot some quite unintelligent aliens, wait for your companion robot (a "ghost" voiced by Peter Dinklage") to scan an object or open a door, claim reward. Rinse and repeat ad nauseum.

On the positive side, the lighting and particle effects in the game are absolutely stunning; the best I've ever seen in a game. Trudging through dark unlit corridors with only the light on your weapon to illuminate the way is quite eerie. Also, the mechanics of the gunplay itself are very well executed. Combat is fast, ferocious and the controls are responsive. Need to sprint away before your shield is depleted or administer a deadly melee strike? It's easy to do in the midst of the fighting.

The art style of the game is fantastically futuristic but the items I've seen so far have a generic look to them. Levelling your character seems quite interesting so far but I need to play more in order to fully get a feel for the depth of the process.

Above are just my first impressions, I have yet to participate in any PvP or finish the shallow campaign story. I will update this review in due course. But for now I would say, prepare to be underwhelmed. I went into Destiny with little enthusiasm but it seems that even I should have tempered my expectations.

It feels like Destiny never got a chance. All the hype flooding the web about how this was the game of a generation and how we would never need to never play another game again. All the hype flooding the web about how this was the game of a generation and how we would never need to never play another game again. Yet the finished product doesn't feel finished, as though Bungie carefully implementing graphics and exotic character designs and rushed the other half by taking the combat and story out of literally any Halo of Call of Duty game and try to sell it as a "re-definition" of gaming. Its a shame really, because on its own merits, Destiny is actually kind of boring sometimes. You start the game off being revived by some sort of guide known only as a "Ghost" and learn that our solar system is slowly being taken over by an unknown substance known only as "The Darkness." You also soon learn that the Guardians are humanity's last hope to push back the darkness and win. If your confused as to what the darkness is and why alien solders known as the "Fallen" are trying to take over, then you are not alone. The game expects you to understand why all of this is happening, and also praises you, the player, as some sort of saviour of the galaxy. Except we already know that's not true because there are about a million other people who have been told the same thing. As you level up you keep getting flooded with new upgrades and weapon and armour unlocks, which is cool until you realise there is nothing worth keeping in the previous level. Since the challenge increases and unlocks even more loot, there will always be something you worked hard to get that has to go to make way for better things. Perhaps the most interesting thing about destiny is much it doesn't define itself from the soulless and bland shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield, despite looking like a refurbished and prettier version of Halo. The story of Destiny is flat, but I'm guessing that's not a good thing to speculate on, since all MMO's aren't exactly famous for having the most exiting and deep stories in gaming.

Overall I feel Destiny will just be another one for the bargain bin, but so long as Bungie keep regular updates and exclusive content coming in, it may be a while before we see that happen.

Let's all be honest, Destiny is neither a zero nor a perfect 10. With GTA 3, Mario 64, or Uncharted 2 (in their day of course) being 10's and ET for Atari 2600, Leisure Suit Larry, and Fighter Within being zeroes, Destiny is a solid 7 overall, maybe an 8 if you ever heard "Leroy Jenkins!" in your headset.

Activision spent a half-Billion on this, so clearly there's plenty of polish.

Activision spent a half-Billion on this, so clearly there's plenty of polish. Undeniably it has excellent control mechanics, smooth gameplay, powerful visuals, and Peter Dinklage, so it's certainly better than average.

But a 10? Come on people, spit out the Kool-Aid. I actually enjoyed Titanfall, so clearly I don't need a story to enjoy a game. But this was not only Bungie, it was Bungie unshackled from Micro$oft for Traveler's sake! Every gamer with a triple-digit IQ was expecting a magnum opus, an epic as powerful as Star Wars to a 7-year-old in 1977 that still goes to Comic-Con dressed as Boba Fett. Instead we got Phantom Menace. WTF Bungie!? You broke hearts. That's where all those zero ratings are coming from.

Destiny is a multi-platform release without significant exclusives...So those zeroes aren't fanboy trolls; they're tears falling on keyboards imagining what Bungie should have and could have done with the gross national product of a small country.

Again I don't require a story to enjoy a game. But if you're going to include a story, hire an award-winning actor, advertise becoming a "legend" in primetime...did I mention spending $500 Billion with B...for the love of all that's holy add a plot with a twist or two, sprinkle in some character development, write some clever dialogue, put some emotional weight on in-game decisions. Instead Destiny's storyline has the gravitas of a Disney channel Halloween movie! The "Darkness"? Really?

Every game publisher needs to take a clue from Far Cry 3 or Uncharted; grab the audience in the beginning. Make us care about the character we control and understand his motivation. I don't have a problem with the vague "you've been dead for hundreds of years" intro, but within in minutes you're fully armed, grinding through bad guys with ease as extremely atmospheric music tries to make your heart pound. Far Cry 3 & the last Tomb Raider did a wonderful job of making you feel so vulnerable in the beginning and paced the power-ups very naturally and satisfyingly. Destiny makes it very clear early on that you have a LOT of grinding to do, and for no other reason than higher level bad guys merely have too many HP for your lowly weapons.

I so wanted to like Destiny and was hoping the emotionless start was just because your character (what's his/her name BTW?) just woke up and didn't know who he was or how to begin his hero's quest. I figured maybe the story would become compelling at the Tower. Meanwhile about an hour into the game, the "Speaker" or some such tells you the world is about to end but hey, you're level 2, have scrap gear, and just woke up from being dead a few hundred years, so why don't you give it a shot and maybe you can save the multiverse from the DARKNESS ooooooo. Squa?

That moment when your guy (what's his name and why do I care) looks over at his "Ghost" is perhaps the lamest cutscene since Final Fantasy X: Tidus Learns to Laugh. It's positively cringe-worthy. It reminded me of when I was embarrassed to admit I still enjoyed video games because they were clearly meant for children.

It was this moment when I realized Destiny is simply not a AAA title in spite of its AAA+ budget and in spite of Bungie. There were immediate clues. Right out of the gate realizing that race and gender meant absolutely zip was a disappointment. Wouldn't it be perfect if the robot made the ideal Titan, the alien best suited to Warlock, and of course a Human Hunter? And meanwhile mixed race/classes would add both challenges & some strategic advantages. That would instantly make the game deeper and more interesting.

Speaking of merely cosmetic differences...so you mean to tell mean that even though you & your flying Rubik's Cube discover and revive a friggin' SPACESHIP bristling with guns and you can buy all sorts of new high-dollar spaceships at the Tower and there's a blond space-mechanic that perpetually sits seductively on a space chest and fixes your spaceship for free every time you dock...and this spaceship is nothing more than a LOADING SCREEN PICTURE??? Are. You. Kidding. Me?

Bungie Bungie Bungie. You had us in the palm of your hands. You teased us with a game that could have done for gaming, what Star Wars did for motion pictures. So much potential. I hope you take those zeroes seriously. I think it's funny how slow the professional review sites are to publish. They see all the glaring flaws but have editors who could be sniffing that river of cash flowing out of a $500,000,000 budget. I fully expect them to shill 9's & 9.5's but we mature gamers should have higher standards and keep publishers honest. Last of Us is a 9, 9.5. Destiny is a 7.

Just a different art style and you have random people roaming about the individual levels that may or may not help you. Yay.

The entire game environment feels lifeless: landscapes are large, but 85% of it is not accessible due to invisible barriers and the environment is just for show - i.e. things aren't interactive and are just there to create a sense of a large world. (Side note: be prepared to see a lot of the same models being used over and over again, ranging from the exact same weapons that require you to be a higher level, to entire rooms being 'copied and pasted' over into a new location).

Character customization is also something lackluster. You can only change the face, skin tone, eye color, and hair for your character. While there are three different races to choose from, you are still left wanting more out of Destiny's character creation.

PvP is this game's strong point, easily. It plays similar to Halo in that regard, but for a game that focuses mostly on completing missions, this game lacks depth.

    The Good:
    - The game is absolutely beautiful.
    - I didn't encounter any errors, network or in-game glitches
    - Flawless launch from my perspective.
    - Controls felt very precise and predictable.
    - Fun customization.
    - AI seemed pretty good.

    The Annoying:
    - Horrible load times
    - Unnecessary redundant acknowledgments

    The Bad:
    - Forgettable story
    - It was hard for me to feel invested with any of the characters
    - Linear progression. I guess I've been spoiled by more open worlds in other games so it's hard to get back on the leash.
    - Very easy on "Normal". Just droves of the same enemies. Once I got the hang of it, it was really easy to choose the right weapon and dispatch the enemies with ease.
    - I don't have a huge desire to replay anything other than multiplayer which frankly feels like a spacey, less refined version of Call of Duty. It's still fun though.
    - Their decision to limit open voice chat was odd. Players should be able to choose to mute other players. It makes multiplayer seem rather stale. They could have done some innovative stuff with voice chat and how players interact. Lost opportunity...
    - No real sense of a community within the game so there wasn't any meaningful interaction with other players.
    - At least at the level that I was playing, there doesn't seem to be much strategy outside of multiplayer. You just shoot (a bunch) at baddies. You get hit. Find cover. Wait for health to regenerate. Shoot again. Rinse and repeat 1000s of times.
    - Not too many meaningful choices in class/character customization. It didn't seem to matter what I chose, the game didn't get any easier or harder or even change the way I played.
    - Where are the vehicles and turrets? It would have been a lot more fun to get some serious fire power every once in awhile or change pace by driving around while shooting at stuff. Armed vehicles and turrets only appeared in a couple places.
    - It would also be cool if you could pick up other weapons from bad guys or other players.
    - Other than a few barrels, the environment does not respond to you or your actions.
    - No real innovation in gameplay or mechanics that come to mind.

To summarize, its a fun game and looks great but it feels like Activision/Bungie are trying to make a franchise modeled after the Call of Duty series. In doing so, they compromised the story, limited content and attempted to keep the player happy through upgrade grinding until they release the next expansion. I'm sure its a great business model but I doubt it's very satisfying for the player and I'm sure it wasn't very inspiring for a creative developer. Take Borderlands, the Call of Duty series and Halo, add them together and you get Destiny. In this case, the parts are all greater than the sum. I read that this game cost $500 million to make. I've had way more fun playing several other games that cost far less to develop. Okay, I guess that wasn't concise. I think the user scores are right on the money at 6.5. I'll give it a 7 because it is really pretty.

Great voice talent like Peter Dinklage are totally wasted on this rough draft story. There are only 3 planets and the moon to explore, all of which consist of tiny maps that while pretty, feel empty and lifeless. You can blow through the whole story in a day easily and reach level 20 with little effort. Endgame is what kills Destiny as the loot system for PVE and PVP is chained to a RNG. All you can do is grind the same handful of multiplayer modes/maps or grind the same 5-6 strike missions till you want to puke. There is just so little to do, it's missing social features like trading and chat, and the loot system is an absolute (and literal) joke. Yes they may address these issues somewhat with patches and DLC but that is a long ways off at best. Right now at least, I'm done with Destiny, in fact I've already traded it back in to best buy. I wanted this so badly to be good but it's just...so...meh....

Maybe in a year or more it will be worth a buy but...damn...it should have been so much more already... *sigh*

This game was released about a year ago and it was called Defiance - this is juts a upgrade with graphics. I don't care if Bungie have a 10 year plan, I can only judge with what we got now as i will move on to better games over the next decade. Repetitive missions, boring Strikes, Patrol etc. The Crucible is average multi-player and yeah the game is fun with friends but so is Borderlands which is more fun, more structured, more diverse and more story driven. And this whole, the game starts at 20 is bull. The end game content is still boring and repetitive while you look for loot with light in it. The MMO aspects are fine for me though it is lite but the looting is a grind and not in a good way. Stunning to look at and rock solid shooting but that's it. I did have fun for a while and the game is technically a marvel hence it gets a 7 rating - its not a 0 or 1 game but it ain't a 10 either. For that purpose it's been amazing amounts of fun and I'm not bored with it yet.

Doing PvE and PvP solo (relying on matchmaking), then I think I would've given up by now and scored it as a generous 5 for the environment builds. So I'm giving it a seven as an in-between score.

Basically it is down to what you think you want out of Destiny. If you don't know a whole lot of online folks who are playing this, don't want to matchmake a team because you're a solo player and you do want a rich, dynamic story-driven game, then this probably isn't going to be the one for you.

I was disappointed by the heavy reliance on external lore through the Grimoire cards on bungie.net vs. vague, hokey, writing which is given as info dumps via the limited cutscenes and voice acting in-game. I'm not criticising the voice acting *itself* here because, as another reviewer has said, actors are only going to be as convincing as the script they are given to perform. (That actors and actresses like Peter Dinklage, Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Bill Nighy, Lance Reddick and others signed on for this should make it my nerd heaven, but they are chronically underused at building characters and are often lost in Fireteam chatter at the start of missions)

However, to balance my view, one of my regular Destiny team players doesn't give a stuff about storytelling or voice acting but still loves the gameplay, so it's never going to be a big deal for others.

Conclusion: It's good enough for me as a team thing, solid weaponry and gameplay. Solo, I'd be bored and frustrated at the lack of story to buy into for the amount of level grinding needed in the same environments with the same enemies.

Its a good game, but i can't see me playing this game for the next 6-months.

What's with all of these user reviews? It's certainly not a 0/10 or a 10/10. If you have rated it a 0 or a 10 your are clearly displaying extreme fanboyism. Seriously, is it that bad it deserves a 0, or that good it deserves a 10? Absolutely not!
Graphically the game looks fantastic, and mechanically it plays great. The repetitive nature of missions however are a little tiresome.

I would really have liked to have seen a local co-op option available, like in Halo. I played through all of the Halo series, never once solo, always split screen co-op and feel like that option would have improved the game greatly for me as most of my friends are spread out between the Xbox 360, PS3 and Xbox one.

Very disappointed. It did not live to my expectations in any aspect. I've been following this game for more than a year. It did not live up to the hype. It will not "change the way we play games forever" like Bungie said it would. But I'm not an idiot. The games is decent, so I won't give it a 0 like many idiots have. All I can say is play better games than this.

Destiny, in its current state, failed to meet the content expectations I had after playing both the Alpha and Beta versions. This score is based on the overall experience, may aspects of Destiny are higher rated, but for a game that has been in development for as long as Destiny, I expected a better overall product.

The Crucible (player vs. player combat) is great fun and adds variety to an otherwise disappointing, rinse-repeat motto that is the player vs. environment (missions, strikes, and patrolling). Missions feel too repetitive towards the end of the game and I was ready to conclude the story before I even reached the end. Patrols and strikes end up in a mindless grind of the same content in hopes for an item with marginally better stats. Stats do not give you the same level of customization in other games of similar genres. Stats give no additional damage, armor, critical strike damage, etc. bonuses, instead they alter cooldowns on various abilities you have. Ultimately, it does not feel like your character develops beyond level 20 via gear upgrades in a traditional sense (e.g., games like Diablo, WoW, FF14, etc.)

To end on a good note, I think Destiny is worth the retail price if you enjoy multiplayer shooters. I really enjoy the Crucible. It is fun to unlock new skills and test different builds in PVP. Furthermore, stat optimization seems to have a greater effect in PVP where you may prefer using grenades more frequently or your special, etc.

Despite not meeting my high expectations as a worth, I think the PVP aspects of this game make it a worthwhile trip. It's just a shame you have to suffer through several hours of lackluster story and repetitive PVE to get to a level where PVP is more enjoyable.

It’s disappointing that this game has such uninspiring game play. The world whilst beautiful, really lacks any soul. The game, whilst a competent shooter, lacks identity. It tries to be too many things and masters none. Nonetheless, despite its shortcomings, it is a competent shooter that I had a blast playing and would still highly recommend.

All i was doing the whole time was Run around and shoot a few robots and the boss and set your ghost to scan the machine. Next levels are excatly the same but different maps. The only good thing about this game is the graphics which are pretty awesome. You get to customise your charachter which is good but thats it. I spent time and time again just repeating the process that i just couldnt be bothered anymore. In my opininion stick to mass effect as that has a great story decent levels and offers much more than this over hyped long overdue dissapionting game. Expand

Destiny is a well crafted game, but fails to do anything new or exciting, and is nothing more than average. Rather than requiring tactics and teamwork, difficult enemies are mostly bullet sponges that you have to hide from every once in a while. Rinse and repeat is the name of the game. The story is chalk full of cliche, and I can't tell if the game is taking itself seriously half the time. With an evil force known as "The Darkness," there is much to be desired if one was expecting a riveting story. Overall Destiny is still a solid game, but one which is nothing special and pushes no boundaries. The game has no flaws which make it unplayable, and still is enjoyable, and as such I've given it a 6/10. Expand

I knew that this game would not live up to the hype and I told everyone not to get excited. I was right.. This game is so repetitive that I think I just found out I may have ADHD. The game could not hold my attention for very long.
I played this on the first day it came out, my buddy bought a copy as well and we played together..
The graphics are nice, but the A.I is god awful.. I did

I did not have one speck of fun in this game while I played it.. If you own Borderlands 2,play that, it's much better than this.

Although Destiny isn't the brilliant start to a franchise that many had hoped for, it's a great game for those who can push through its flaws and enjoy the ride.

What is most amazing of all is that despite its litany of weird little problems, Destiny is fantastic, its combat up there with the very best, the thrilling rhythm of its battles still not fading the 30th time through, and it has no single systemic problem that is not fixable. [Dec 2014, p.106]

Destiny is a flawed but still extremely fun first person shooter. While the Destiny universe itself seems intriguing, the storyline is told in such an incoherent manner that it's hard not to be turned off by all the technobabble. Fortunately the co-op shooter mechanics are absolutely perfect. The loot system can be maddening, but in a way it adds to the game's addictiveness. [Oct 2014]
