I agree with Tim Rogers. This masterpiece is the Grand Turismo of walking simulators. It's also a construction game though. The latest game from the respected developer of the MGS franchise, Hideo Kojima , hit stores on the 8th of November, and was met with a maelstrom of drama from the gaming community. A war erupted in comment sections all across the internet, with each side refusing to back down. Once user reviews for the game on Metacritic opened up, they took the war here, dropping thousands of 0's and 10's in a desperate bid at getting some kind of validation for their childish behavior.

This isn't an uncommon sight. It happens more often than you'd think, and is just yet another sign that real criticism is no longer valued, and that the majority of gamers are simply narcissistic bastards who refuse to accept the fact that someone else might have a different opinion than them.

I can only hope that whoever is currently reading this has a better head on their shoulders.

But what about the game, Death Stranding, then? Is it actually any good? Or is it the vile piece of crap that some claim it is?

Well, in my opinion, Death Stranding is the single best video game I've played in 2019, and a breath of fresh air in an industry oversaturated by dull Hollywood action games, battle royale games and FPS games. It's a video game that dares to try something different, that dares to make you, the player, FEEL something apart from just the simple emotion of being vaguely entertained. But leave it up to the gaming community to mindlessly **** on anything that doesn't contain their beloved "instant-gratification-loop".

But I'm not going to sit here and rail on and on about why I love this game so much. Chances are, you've probably made up your mind by now on whether or not you are interested in this. If you ultimately do decide to buy it, I can't guarantee that it's something you are going to enjoy. You might end up hating it, in fact. Just know that: to me, it was an amazing experience, and one that I'm very unlikely to forget any time soon.

Absolutely gorgeous environments, great voice acting, and the character models don't fall into the uncanny valley at all. Some great talent in this game, too. I'm not a Walking Dead fan, personally, but Norman Reedus really does make the perfect Sam Bridges.

However, Kojima approaches it in a different way than usual; as you play, there is more to do, more ways to get to the point you wanna be. The travel is immersive and it feels real, it feels like your actions have real consequences. The best: the community. I encourage to play with an internet connection, because is with these connections that you made with others that the game is great at. You will find yourself helping others in return a lot of the time, or thanking others that left what you needed behind.

It has a slow start, and in this start the game does not show all of its cards. Like Kojima says, it takes time to really enjoy the game (though I liked it from the start). It is not a shooter, but it has action parts. The best ones are the ones involving the rain or the EV.

Yeah, it has weird parts, sometimes you would find yourself preparing and not doing anything, but for the most part is a great game. For me, it is a masterpiece, but I understand that for a lot, it would be plain boring. Again, opinions.

As I said, it is not for everyone, but a lot of people will enjoy. Do not hate those who didn't like, and those who didn't like it, don't hate those who did like. This war is just stupid, let people enjoy things. Opinions and hate are different things, and this game does not deserve as much hate as its getting.

Most people reviewing it seems like they haven't gotten to Chapter 3 when it opens up. This is much more of a slow burn game and you can't just wildly rush things like many of today's gamers do.

Death Stranding is a breath of fresh air in a world full of instant gratification videogames. While lacking in some departments for the "modern gamer", for me personally, Death Stranding hits the spot perfectly. Up to this day i never really liked traversing enviroments in games, because all it was just holding "forward" and not really doing anything else. What Death Stranding does, isDeath Stranding is a breath of fresh air in a world full of instant gratification videogames. While lacking in some departments for the "modern gamer", for me personally, Death Stranding hits the spot perfectly. Up to this day i never really liked traversing enviroments in games, because all it was just holding "forward" and not really doing anything else. What Death Stranding does, is give you a handful of enjoyable minigames to play while looking at the beautiful enviroments and listening to the ambience of it all. That's what works for me, I think in the coming years, games will start adding these minigames to traversal, instead of opting for 100% fast-travel. Fast-travel has it's merits, but sometimes it's good to let the player enjoy the scenery, even if it seems lengthy.
i have not finished the game yet and i feel there is a lot more to discover in the upcoming hours, that i will play. I feel that the majority of people here giving 0's didn't even touch the game based on their reviews and seeing as some of their "claims" were proven wrong when i actually got to a certain part of the game, which showed that they didn't know what they were talking about.
All in all, if you cannot spare 60 dollars for a game of this scale, wait for a sale, give it an honest try, ignoring all other opinions and for once, try to form your own. It is what i did and i have to say i'm not missing a single cent that i spent.
Music is gorgeous, Graphics aswell, albeit i was hoping for 60 fps, the game being locked to 30 being a minus for me. The story, seemingly complicated to some, is told in chunks, not too complicated, easily to digest considering how long the game is.
While some people maybe expected a military shooter ala Metal Gear Solid and what we're seeing is the dissapointment of not getting something you're expecting. For me the gameplay is above all else, "glorified fetch quest", "boring, repetitive" some may call it, don't listen to those people and try it for yourself, at the end of the day you might end up as me and find a new game to add to your favourites. You may not end up liking it, but that's okay.

The characters are interesting. The “bts” are genuinely horrifying. The moment to moment gameplay ranges from easy going to incredibly tense. The variety of gameplay slowly increases as you get used to mechanics and systems. The graphics are beautiful. The soundtrack and how the music is implemented is kinda neat. There are two things I don’t like about the game so far. The product placement is dumb and holding the triggers to steady yourself under a heavy load is a bit excessive. That’s it! After having skimmed through a large portion of them, I have came to the conclusion that a large majority of the negative reviews are either trolls, konami shills, or people who simply don’t get it. There was a time, where a game like this would be considered a masterpiece. Sadly those days have been eroded, eroded like the flesh of your character’s skin when the rain hits it. Gaming in today’s day and age has been whitewashed, people now come to expect the same formula released every 6 months rehashed with a different skin, presented under a different theme but none the less the gameplay in those games remain passionless, and lack substance. Sure the new Call of Duty looks great, but beyond the flash it is just a remake of call of duty 4. Most people have become accustomed to these kinds of games that when they play something like death stranding, they hate it. This game will not receive the praise it deserves because of companies like EA bastardizing the industry for a quick buck, and anyone who can’t grip the immaculance that is death stranding lacks just as much tegridy as the companies that make the passionless games they’re used to playing. As for my review? What else can I say, the game is brilliant. Boring walking sim? Not even close, sure there is a lot of walking but In a post apocalyptic world you are going to do a lot of walking. Chances are you’ll almost never come across a band of nomads driving cars welded together from other cars like in mad max, a true apocalyptic scenario will likely be exactly as the one death stranding imposes. None the less, as I begin to trail off point. I am only half way through episode 2, and so far I have been almost dragged twice to my death by BT’s, and ambushed once by MULES. So if you are someone who thinks all you do is walk, then you never really gave the game a chance or just haven’t played at all and are just being trendy by hating something you do not understand or you think is cool to hate because your favorite loser YouTuber doesn’t think it’s fast paced enough to deserve the recognition as the piece of art this game actually is. Kojima is on a constant ego trip for a reason, the man is a genius. And even if I never play this fame again after I play through it, I will continue to support developers like Hideo, because developers like Hideo aren’t passionless hacks like EA or Ubisoft. Sadly like I said, this game won’t get the praise it deserves and people will continue to throw their money at companies like EA that are run by actual sociopaths. Oh well, people always gonna be blissful to their own ignorance Expand

Expand

It is a phenomena where one person experiences time differently from the outside world. You may have experience this in Outer Worlds recently. During my 30+ years of gaming life, I have experienced this on only a handful of occasions where I literally lost track of time while playing a particular game. You tend to be more easily impressed when you are younger but as the years piled up, you become more jaded towards games as the mechanics remained the same while graphics continued to improve and franchise sequels dominate the landscape.

Similar to what Martin Scorsese wrote in his NY Times ‘s opinion about movies as a medium, there is increasingly lack of an element of risk to these franchise sequels or well-trodden genre games. Don’t get me wrong, Outer Worlds was a fantastic game, I lapped it up eagerly as I hungered for a sequel to Fallout 4 and in truth, it was indeed very well made. Nevertheless, when the final credits rolled, I felt then that I have seen it all before and I found myself struggling to hop on for another run.

With Death Stranding, yes, it can be a tedious game during parts and the UI can be intimidating with limited tutorials but boy, am I lost in time when I become completely immerse in this world created by Hideo Kojima. I often start off with a simple delivery while it is bright outside and, without realizing it, ended up well into the evening by the time I successfully connected more cities to the Chiral network. Time dilation that I experienced is a reflection of how immersive and successfully this game is. Stripping away the beautiful visuals, the captivating sound track and celebrities’ appearances, it is simply a single player lonely experience in an empty world longing for connection much like the people in UCA. Through hardships in making the arduous journey in reconnecting, the lonely world suddenly lights up with evidence of others tireless improving this once emptied place and turning it into a collaborative playground. It is fitting that the players’ experiences in the game mirror the struggles of those Kojima depicted within the game.

Much like what another reviewer said in his/her piece, the time to play Death Stranding is now, the playground is at its infancy but like many pioneers before us, those brave enough to take the risks will be rewarded with an experience rarely enjoyed through this wonderful medium called video games. To this end, I applaud Hideo Kojima for being able to bring his visions to this AAA budget project while still be willing to take the risks of making such a unique gem.

But it’s definitely not a game for everyone. The idea of bringing everyone together in both your main story and your a-sync multiplayer is brilliant, but unfortunately will fail to engage people who just want to run and shoot. The game isn’t about combat or dominating the other team, it’s about thought and understanding how and where to and build items that will not only help you but others. It’s sad that the game isn’t recognized more for its uniqueness and ingenuity. It’s not a perfect game. The cryptic storytelling and odd character names break the immersion at times. Expand

For those who appreciate a narrative adventure that rewards persistence, logic and ingenuity - this could be right up your street. It's a vast, hauntingly beautiful game with an immersive story and unique game mechanics that will appeal to the fastidious poet in anyone who can wade through the swamp of XBox-scented zero score review bombing, citing 'pretension' as a substituted word for 'Not a rehash of every Action/FPS trope in the book' or simply 'Not available on XBox' as so often is the case.

This is a game for relaxing into, enjoying a narrative experience and problem-solving your way across a vast landscape. Find yourself at a cliff-edge by mistake? good thing you brought those ropes to rappel down. See a good shortcut? use your kit to fashion a route and leave it there for other players to benefit.

It is a leap outside the norm, and the backlash towards it just a symptom of the dull-eyed conformity that keeps EA and Treyarch is business. Make your own mind up.

    Personally, I love it.

I think the development team has managed to create a truly unique environment for the gamers to explore and throughout my time of play, I genuinely felt like I was Sam - traversing through this chaotic world of Post-apocalyptic America. I think Kojima could improve some aspects of the game and make it more fluid in some aspects, making it less annoying (cutscenes). The enemies could be more "motivated" and make the game more challenging.
Aside from those remarks, the game is fantastic, the story is really good and the soundtrack and the scenery are amazing too.
Maybe this game is a Kojima experiment on what he can do by himself without Konami.

How does it hold up to some of Kojima's other work? Well it's certainly no MGS or Snatcher.
The graphics are very impressive, possibly Yoji Shinkawa's best work, the aesthetics and designs are very creative, and likewise the world design is about as good as it gets for the current gen, pure eye candy. The sound design is also pretty good, I enjoyed more than a few of the licensed songs, and I can't complain about the sound effects and ambience. The voice acting is pretty exceptional aside from Norman Reedus being mostly absent and just listening to NPCs without any response most of the time, much like Kiefer Sutherland did as Big Boss/Venom Snake in MGS V.

The story is just weird, some parts of it are neat but more silly than anything, some of the cut scenes are exceptional , very nicely shot, and directed and that just might be the carrot on the stick to get you through the often drawn out, repetitive chapters but the story itself is just extremely tongue and cheek and I found myself rolling my eyes at the plot and world building Kojima is known for.

Gameplay is interesting, the locomotion itself is a challenge, it can be fun at times even with the frustration of taking one wrong step and falling flat on your face ruining your cargo early on, I still had a bit of fun traversing the world and having to get creative to make short cuts and working with/helping out the other invisible players to make the landscape more convenient to navigate.

I would have loved to see more importance in combat and I understand that Kojima is not a huge fan of killing and ultra violence, but the combat feels very dated for a game released in 2019, especially compared to how good and deep the combat and controls felt in 2015's MGS V.

I'd say its worth buying, just wait for a sale. I got my copy at 40 USD and still I overpaid a bit because of how the game just drags on and leaves much to be desired. Maybe 30 dollars would be a better price-tag. The Metal Gear saga has been my favorite franchise in gaming, really hate saying I am disappointed with Death Stranding but yeah.. It could have been better for sure.

It's so weird how my opinion changed on the game just like that. The problem is first impressions are a big thing, which will turn a lot of people away. But if you stick with it, I think you'll find it was worth the effort and you'll be glad you played it. After completing the story I adore it. Think of it as like watching a TV show. It takes a few episodes until you really get invested in it. However, the many tedious and frustrating hours I got from this game is a major flaw, which is why this isn't a 9 or a 10. A persons time is valuable and many people simply won't have the patience to sit through this game to it's conclusion. The game was slow to begin with alot of cutscenes when I just wanted to get into gameplay but now I am really enjoying it and keep coming back to play, I got so excited when I unlocked vehicles lol but I didn't even mind the walking (it's not a walking simulator) I love all the micromanaging aspects of the game and the way Kojima has integrated the online is so cool the story is very interesting and keeping me involved. I'm not sure where everyone's getting this "obsessive advertisement" from have they even played the game? There is small amount of advertising when you visit your private room with 5 cans of monster energy on the table but they actually have a purpose you drink them for extra stamina and when Reedus takes a poop the doors advertise Norman Reedus rides on amc which I actually thought was funny didn't bother me at all people are making a big deal out of absolutely nothing.

And one last thing and probably the most surprising and best I have been playing since day one and have not experienced one bug the world is massive but nope not one it's great to see such a well polished game released, normally if I buy day one it's riddled with bugs so I was so surprised, Kojima should be proud just of that he has done a very good job here and other developers should take note that you don't need to rush and release a buggy mess I think we appreciate it more if it's finished to perfection which this game is, I will be playing this game for a long time I absolutely love it.

At certain points when it was difficult I was able to progress the game thanks to the various structures left behind by other players. The whole game world is filled with the players structures & it is a sight to behold.

The story is the main highlight of this game, it is incredible & will put you in the edge of your seat at certain points. The story has many surprising plot twists & is so good that it would be a great Sci-fi movie of it's own.
The performance by all the characters & the actors portraying them are excellent aspecially Cliff & Die Hardman's performance. It rivals even some movie's performance. The game's graphics is one of the best to be seen on a PS4 yet, the facial animations, textures all are incredible & as a whole this is a very beautiful game to look at visually.

The gameplay is addictive & fun to play once you get a hang off it, I would spend countless hours delivering so that I can get that perfect 5 stars & it is very satisfying to do so.
It took me over 85 hours to complete the game & I loved every moment of it, I honestly didn't expect the game to be this good. But ofcourse it's not a perfect game there are some flaws with some gameplay ideas & mechanics for that I reduced 1 point but still I consider this game to be a Masterpiece. The final act of this game will always be one of the best gaming moments in my life. It was quiet epic to say the least.
As a whole I love this game & is my second most favorite game by Kojima after MGS 3.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Death Stranding is a kojima product at its finest.

Whilst the story starts off slow and fragmented as the first episodes are used to introduce you to the world and the way the network functions. After the, fairly large, third episode it starts to pick up the pace. Then the final few episodes are amazing throwing twist after twist until you reach the climatic ending where you save the earth from the last EE(Extinction event). During this moment there is a cheesy speech about staying connected but overall it was a great ending.

After the credits there's another 1-2hrs of story where you find out about the entire backstory of your bb (I'll leave this twist to you) with another conclusion that was perfect for the whole setting after the ending of the main story and it leaves the game open for the possibility of a sequel whilst also being satisfying enough to be left as is.

Gameplay wise, I don't expect death Stranding to be for everyone. I'm going to put it out there right now, the games gameplay for a large portion is just being a delivery guy. But, those moments where you're fighting BTs or in a boss fight easily provide enough variation to keep you satisfied through the sometimes long gaps between story segments.

Simply, its a boring game... its not addictive, its not hard. If you don't like video games and just want a walk simulator you will like.

Przykład geniuszu Kojimy i dla mnie gra tej generacji. Niesamowite widoki, mroczny klimat, genialne postaci i cholernie wciągająca opowieść. Prawdziwa perełka i tytuł do którego będą powracał za wiele lat. Interakcja z innymi graczami to mistrzostwo!

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
