Tired of rushed unfinished games that you have pay extra money to get stuff you should have gotten when the game came out.

this game is a disappointing sequel:
    - no tag mode
    - a bad costume unlocking system
    - very expensive season pass
    - first day dlc
    - reduced breasts
    - less sexy suits
    - The two new characters are boring.

Well, they cut off Ryu’s balls and killed the Ninja Gaiden series. I guess it only makes sense to hack off Kasumi’s money makers and throw the DOA series in the same grave.

Once again the Team at Koei Tecmo (the real Team Ninja died back in 2008) shows a fundamental lack of understanding of what makes their games work and what content their fans expect from them. Dead or Alive has always been a bubbly and ridiculous 3d fighter, never taking itself too seriously. Dead or Alive 5 Vanilla tried to take the serious “I’m a fighter” stance and it quickly fell flat. Thankfully the Ultimate and Last Round editions brought back the outrages costumes and over the top stages.

But here we are with DOA 6… and it kinda feels like I jumped back in time and I’m back with the basic and boring DOA 5. Other than bringing Street Fighter 4’s focus meter into the DOA Series, there is precious little, new and exciting content in the game. The only thing more boring than the two new characters is the selection of costumes to unlock… most of them being color swaps!

I’ll admit I’m an older Team Ninja fan and the DOA5s were my least favorite in the series… it does not change the fact that I bought all three games and a bunch of DLC. Looking at DOA6 I can’t help but wonder… what am I paying for? Where are the new characters? I already paid to use Phase 4, Tengu, and Mai, why are they behind a paywall… AGAIN! Where are all the cool costumes? Why not design costumes that match better with the stages? Fighting on a Spanish Galleon? Give me a bloody pirate outfit!

End of the day whether you a fan of the classic games or the 5s, it’s hard to recommend this game to anyone, there is simply not enough new content for the asking price.

One last Note: Can you Imagine the outrage if Ryu from Street Fighter series was in a wetsuit on the Box for SF 5? Kasumi’s classic blue outfit is CLASSIC and I don’t see why Koei Tecmo is embarrassed by their characters and their fans… shame on them.

This is going to be a fair review based on the launch release of a deluxe pre-order I made on this game. Way too many reviews anywhere are being too generous for what's going on here.

This is going to be a fair review based on the launch release of a deluxe pre-order I made on this game. Way too many reviews anywhere are being too generous for what's going on here.

I like DOA, quite a bit actually, and with DOA5LR, I had my many issues with the game overall, but I still had a lot of fun. So it's nice to be able to see some of the problems I had before get addressed here in DOA6. I will give a list summary here of my core problems in DOA5LR that I think did well here in DOA6:

1.) Music - This might annoy some people but even with the addition of previous title's tracks put into the game for DOA5LR I still didn't enjoy the soundtrack much. It felt underwhelming and incomplete to me and while people may not like the soundtrack for DOA6, the music I've heard so far I really do like.

2.) Stages - I didn't like most of the stages in DOA5LR, they felt very lifeless and stale to me. Almost like there was no flare to them. DOA6 i've enjoyed the stages a lot so far, so definitely an improvement there.

3.) Combat - DOA5LR had a great system, but I always felt it needed a change, or some tweaking. DOA6 is really fun and the strongest part of the game for me. A few little things I'm not a big fan of, but so far it's hitting a mark that I and lots of others like.

4.) Visuals - Hear me out. Visually it's less impressive than DOA5LR, but overall I like them better here. I'm not adamant about games looking super realistic. I like games to look like games after all. Plus it feels like the characters have their own base design models instead of being copies and pastes like in DOA5LR.

5.) Story - Cool concept, just badly thrown together here in DOA6. It, at the very least, is still better than DOA5LR, but it's still bad regardless.

6.) Customization - An obvious improvement, while overshadowed by several other fighting game titles, is still a nice addition for this franchise.

And now comes my major problems with the game. First of all, it's an unfinished game. No online lobby matches, single victory/match start poses, a very watered down and stale DOA Quest mode, high priced season passes as usual, etc.

For a game that's $60, this isn't worth it. It's actually infuriating that this game costs $60 for an incomplete game that has plans to include the "remaining parts of the game" the coming MONTHS. I said months. This is absurd, and I could forgive most of it a bit more if lobby matches were a part of the launch game and unlocking costumes through costume parts weren't completely random. The fact that this game was hyped up to have all these different "modes" that have existed since the 90s (arcade, time attack, vs, survival, tutorial, and so on), I shouldn't have expected much out of what we got here. I love DOA, I want to see it get better.

But how it stands, this game is not good. Shady practices of giving your paying customers an essential beta/demo for a full priced AAA title, a very mediocre new Quest mode, giving fans the same costumes as the previous game, making said costumes stupidly hard to unlock because you can't even get points towards the character you're using, offering previous characters as paid DLC, a bad story that looks rushed, rank only online currently (lol, this is the biggest joke here), odd character animations for some of the characters, plenty of bugs (some are ludicrous), a ridiculously overpriced season pass, and just the overall lack of actual content this game has.

I am not okay with how greedy the creators of this game are being. If I could I would rate below a 0 for how much garbage that is, but as a game itself it's still pretty good in its own right. The absolute best part is the combat, where it matters most, but I can't forgive all the missing stuff and charging fans the amount that they have for an unfinished game. Very very bad move there.

    **EDIT**

So not only are we not getting lobbies yet, but now we're getting a temporary point multiplier after it was confirmed by the company themselves prior that it was permanent. Sooo, they lied there, and now they're waiting to add lobbies until the END of March, AFTER they release an adjustment to where points are assigned for costumes, while adding costumes to buy. Give me a break, I'm changing my score to a flat zero now. Pushing back their mediocre patch, giving us crap that should've been given already, still holding off on content to COMPLETE the game further down the road. No, you can take a fat zero.

Well not with DOA6. The game has less content than the DEMO.

There is a terrible system of grinding. You get maybe 200 pattern points IF you clear all objectives in each mission, but these don't go to the outfit you select, or the character the game makes you play as, but to a random outfit from any of the rostered characters. What's more, if the outfit costs less than you won, you lose the remaining points. Ranked matches only count if WON and you only win 20 or so patterns and that's only until the 14th of March. After March 14, you will only get 2 points per ranked match won. Oh how generous.

There are fewer poses. DOA5LR/U had 2 intro and 3 win poses. This game has only one each.

There is no TAG team fighting.

Story mode completion unlocks nothing of value.

As is this game offers less content than the DEMO and less than previous DOA games. It is very sad that Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo treat their fans this way. Unless they fix this, I won't be purchasing any DLC content - because what's the point - if you can't have your favourite characters wear expensive outfits?

As for gameplay - it is decent but not groundbreaking. It's neither better nor worse than DOA5's.

Music is great. But so was LR's.

Thank you for reading this review.

But this being a fighting game, a strong multiplayer component would allow all of this to be forgiven, and unfortunately that not the case here either. Not having lobbies is a huge problem, leaving you to hunt for your friends online, they say they are going to fix it by the end of the month but how the game plays now, with frequent bouts of lag.... I have my doubt.

If your a die hard fan of fighting games and just want to see some ridiculous moves, you should wait for the free to play version to hit, everyone else should wait for Mortal Kombat in April.

Obviously not. The content compared to previous iterations is a joke. Not including colour variations the male characters have only 2 costumes, female characters have 5, which might not sound terrible but when you consider that DOA has always been about the costumes it’s extremely disappointing. There’s no longer a tag mode, which was great! Why did they remove it? Tag combos and tag out throws added so much more to the game, perhaps they’ll sell tag mode as DLC in the future. Speaking of DLC, which was available from day one at a ludicrous price offered only 2 extra characters and a bunch of costumes, probably the costumes from previous games. It seems, they’re business model is to resell content that we had bought in previous games at a premium price.
Now, fighting games are competitive so, in this day and age we expect a coherent online mode, not with DOA6, currently only ranked match can be selected, no lobbies, you can’t even play with friends online. It almost feels like a beta.
My advice would be to shun this game until it’s on sale, which probably won’t be long judging by its sales and reviews.
To conclude, DOA6 offers less than half the content of DOA5, online is unfinished. No tag mode, significantly less costumes and corporate greed. However! The core mechanics and gameplay are flawless! Which is a shame as this game could have been great if the developers had more time to actually finish the product and not tried to drip feed content at a premium price.

This whole selling a game at beta and then release the alpha a week, month, year later needs to stop, and speaking of things that need to be stopped.

They improved it a little in a patch but you should unlock like in DOA 5: an outfit per arcade playtrough, up till this point you might take days to unlock the outfit you want. They’ve put in less outfits and this seems their attempt to hide that. The prices and amounts of DLC are ridiculous. Not to mention the storymode is lackluster at best.

I used to love DOA but this is not actually worth the full price. Not even $20. I don’t recommend it. Don’t vote in favor of this nonsense like I did by buying it. They love it, they love monetizing every single little individual piece of content for their game making it cost well over the price that the game should cost. Would you actually pay $3,000 for a video game?
This has to be the absolute breaking point for the company.

Dead or Alive 6 is rubbish. Complete garbage. The season passes for this game cost $240 right now (we're in season 4). If you want to buy individual costumes for this game, you need to buy microtransactions. The microtransactions come in 2 tickets, 10, 20, and 50. If you're playing online and someone else has the same costume on the same character you're playing, you can't use it because they're the same color. They didn't think to put multiple colors for costumes in case if this happens.

Today they released some mash-up pack with an Atelier game, the costumes cost 3 tickets. You HAVE to buy the 10 tickets if you just want one costume from it. Along with this overpriced costume pack today, they released hair colors. They cost 1 ticket, but if you pick a color you like, you need to pay the actual in-game currency to revert the hair color back to normal. Well, it seems if you want that hair color back, you gotta pay another 1 ticket for the one you already paid for.

This game is a waste of good potential and is monetized to Hell and back. Dead or Alive 5 was absurd with this, but as of today, I am done with this. This game and it's monetization is in no way consumer friendly and I urge EVERYONE to stay away from it. Unless you love spending $500 on a game, that's your problem and you have too much money to waste are the reason why games are monetized like this nowadays.

A hive of scammy microtransactions and overpriced DLC. Avoid at all costs. We live in an era where companies keep trying to push for these disgusting practices and it's important that when they do that we give them low ratings and show them we're not gonna stand for it

7 years we DOA fans waited for the continuation of the already bad story of DOA 5, and this is what we get. The story writing is WAY OFF this time. Nothing in this game's story mode makes any logical sense at all, and that's my main reason for the love of this game, but now, I'm seriously regretting choosing this franchise over Tekken.

Huge ripoff. It has input lag issues, horrible online play, weak single player content, arcade mode is bad, story mode is bad and costume unlocks system is horrible. Day 1 dlc practices galore. Screw this game.

I should be mad about the insane grind to unlock built in content (but I forgive this), I should be mad about the price tag (most expensive DOA game yet) but ultimately, I am pissed off that unless you wanna spend £80 on the first season pass, you are left with the most boring costumes ever seen in a DOA game INCLUDING the pathetic pirate/wedding costumes which are being sold separately.I should be mad about the insane grind to unlock built in content (but I forgive this), I should be mad about the price tag (most expensive DOA game yet) but ultimately, I am pissed off that unless you wanna spend £80 on the first season pass, you are left with the most boring costumes ever seen in a DOA game INCLUDING the pathetic pirate/wedding costumes which are being sold separately. Did Team Ninja finally cave to social justice?? or are they just putting a premium price tag to access this content which surpasses the cost of the actual game?? I am so sick of the predatory practices that Team Ninja play on its fans with regards to DLC. I'm officially done with this franchise! Expand

Doa6 still has some of the most fluid and satisfying combat of any fighting game but there's a whole lot added ,that destroys your experience. First issue is your quickly find yourself done with the story mode and having unlocked no outfits. Unlocking outfits seems to be completely random. Also the grind in DOA 6 is ridiculas, all the least desireable outfits unlock first and after 100s of hour you might start to unlock the sexy stuff you acctually want. When you spend 50 minutes grinding in arcade and all you have unlocked by the end of it is 10% of one costume and 15% of another costume, both probally boiring church clothes you dobt even want, It dosent incentivise you to play another round. Most time I played Dia 6 I played one game mode and stoped 20 mins later dishearted by the grind and how liitle I had acheived, no matter how good you played. A modern fighing game needs to reward the player sufficiently. Almost every other fighter has nailed it this gen, but not my favorite franchise Doa, they screwed themselves with greed.

Other issue is the weird difficulty spikes. Some characters like jan Lee pull off attacks so fast and doing so much damage that you're dead in seconds without even realising what's happening well every other fight you haven't even had a challenge. Overall what potentially could have been the game that put DOA back on the map is probably the game that burries it because of greed self-censorship and not catering to their fans on top of treating their fans like they're all whales that will spend anything.

A shame what they did to DOA because of the idiots of the western world that can't see hot woman.
I feel bad for the new characters.
    - Changed costumes to satisfy people that can't handle a woman in skimpy costumes; - Changed Kasumi default costume ( put back later when saw the sh*t); - Censored Rachel fiend costume; -Tag mode removed -Very poor fan service -Private paradise

Is Dead or Alive 6 worth picking up? No. Unless you really (and I mean really) need to know what happens in the next installment of the franchise. Yes, credit where credit is due with the gameplay, roster, and visuals, but everything about the game just has this air of ‘lacking’ around it. The soundtrack could have done a lot more, most of the design was just plain bad, the story felt thrown together at the last minute, and the length of the campaign just doesn’t justify the £54 price tag attached to the game.

The combat system has been tweaked just enough to keep things fresh for Dead or Alive 6, but there is this niggling feeling that the budget just wasn't there for this game, which is unfortunate, because there are plenty of modes and great characters to enjoy. A few too many aspects stand out as sub-par, though, leading to disappointment for many that have been waiting so long for the next entry in this franchise. Still a whole lot of fun and worth at least trying the free-to-play version out if curious, but it may be best to wait for the likely Ultimate edition.

Fast paced, addictive and funny as always, but it doesn’t seem the best episode in the Dead or Alive series, so far.
