Adult, irreverent, creative and over the top this game is the epitome of a hidden gem. Technically it may not surprise you (it's a Vita port) and the gameplay may not be perfect but this game is ultimately about its narrative and flamboyant aesthetics and when it comes to these it is truly memorable. It will make you stop and think which is something not every game can do. Special mentionAdult, irreverent, creative and over the top this game is the epitome of a hidden gem. I feel I should start by saying that the trailer on the PS4 store advertising this game does a terrible job. It makes you think it's some weird third person shooter that has no story and tries to pull in an old character as a cash grab. But let me assure you, that it is not the case. It makes you think it's some weird third person shooter that has no story and tries to pull in an old character as a cash grab. But let me assure you, that it is not the case. This game is another great entry into the Danganronpa universe. Ultra Despair Girls takes place between DR1 and DR2, but should be played after both games to avoid spoilers.

It absolutely adds to the story of what's going on in the actual world while the Ultimate Despairs are still at large. A lot of questions are answered in this game like about how Junko could get Monokuma and the whole slew of technology he represents, along with other questions you may have. You get more character development for Toko (which was very much needed, she became a bit more likable in this game) and another character from DR2 that helps flesh out their motivations a bit better.

UDG is different than the first two games in that this is 3D and you're in 3rd person. It has more action controls but never once sacrifices story for an attempt at a different sort of game. It does an amazing job putting this game together through 3D cut scenes, anime cut scenes, and the actual 3rd person gameplay.

Gameplay-wise you’ve got a weapon that can shoot Monokumas with different types of bullets that you can upgrade in slightly different ways. You get to try and figure out which is the best bullet to use in different situations. I had read that some people found the controls to be wonky but I didn't have any problem controlling Komaru or shooting. There are collectibles to pick up that further add to the story, indeed one set is informing you about who the other Captives are.

There is a new game called Monoku-Man arcade machines (“It looks like another one of those arcade machines.” You’ll hear that a lot.) Arcade machines are neat little puzzles that have you figuring out the best way through these Monokumas that destroys them all at once in different ways. They're not too bad though there are two in Chapter 4 that must not have been play tested because they are absolutely impossible to do. Just save yourself a headache, and shoot all the Monokumas, instead of constant retries, to try a get a better letter grade at the end of chapter report card than I did.

In the end, I would definitely recommend picking this game up if you loved the other Danganronpa games. The music is still on point and one song actually changes as you progress in the game to accentuate what you’re going through. Will you choose hope or despair?

A decent 3rd Person Shooter. It‘s the darkest Danganronpa game. The story is really good and Nagito is there!

Great story, characters, memorable OST, and voice acting. Also a great ending that leaves everyone happy.

Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls is a nice spin-off expanding the story from the two main episodes, also shifting to an action-shooting oriented gameplay through a third-person camera. There is enough to enjoy for the fans of the series, but graphics feels quite old albeit the remastered visuals and there are also old problems imported from the original PS Vita version.

Ultra Despair Girls is not a perfect game, but brings some new fresh action to Danganrompa's verbose style. A decent spin-off, mostly enjoyable if you have already played the main episodes.

    An undoubtedly captivating chapter.
