I didn't complete the game, but got far enough along to understand what it has to offer.

I didn't complete the game, but got far enough along to understand what it has to offer.

    You'll like this game if:
    - You liked the characters in the original Danganronpa.
    - You don't mind fully juvenile themes and writing (more so than Danganronpa).
    - You don't mind very basic 3rd person shooters.

Despite not liking Danganronpa overall, I found many of the characters to be relatively interesting and was slightly looking forward to playing Ultra Despair Girls.

The gameplay consists solely of a basic 3rd person shooter where you go place to place to unveil the story, killing monokumas along the way. Along with shooting, you have other abilities, such as using your gun to make electrical things move, make enemies dance in place, push enemies back, and reveal hidden objects. You can also switch in your 2nd protagonist at any time and become obscenely overpowered for short periods of time.

That's really all there is to the gameplay, so on to the story.

It's starts out great, having your protagonist, who's a relative of a character in the first game, being locked in an apartment building for years. You'll quickly get out, find out the state of the world (the same state it's in at the end of Danganronpa), and meet one of the main characters from the previous game. You'll eventually meet up with your 2nd protagonist under incredibly interesting circumstances and you go from there.

But the writing and interesting portions of the game decrease greatly from there. You find out that the main villains are a group of relatively stupid kids, who are unbelievably able to cause all of the chaos, issues, and gore happening around you. While juvenile writing affected Danganronpa only occasionally (unfortunately through its plot twists and character motivations), it affects this game through every aspect of the story. But that might be a good thing, as it's hard to take the story seriously and you can simply dismiss the entire thing as parody or comedy.

But without an interesting story or gameplay, what else is there? Well, there's the interactions between the protagonists, which start out great. But it doesn't take long to realize that they're repeating the same emotions and issues over and over. For example, the main protagonist frequently breaks down, being unable to handle the stress/killing/gore, and the 2nd protagonist essentially kicks her ass and makes her go on. After that happened about five times with no additional character development, I realized that this game had nothing for me, so I put it away.

So if you didn't like Danganronpa due to its juvenile writing, you definitely won't like this one. This game is for huge Danganronpa fans only, or for anyone who like stories aimed at kids with lots of gore added in.

The game is trash as is anyone who thinks it deserves better than 1/10. Anyone who likes this game should come with a warning that they are absolutely not fit for society. People should have something to signal that they are a danganronpa fan so humanity knows to give them a wide berth and avoid any contact with them.

Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls is a nice spin-off expanding the story from the two main episodes, also shifting to an action-shooting oriented gameplay through a third-person camera. There is enough to enjoy for the fans of the series, but graphics feels quite old albeit the remastered visuals and there are also old problems imported from the original PS Vita version.

Ultra Despair Girls is not a perfect game, but brings some new fresh action to Danganrompa's verbose style. A decent spin-off, mostly enjoyable if you have already played the main episodes.

    An undoubtedly captivating chapter.
