As with the main Danganronpa games, there’s a number of serious subtexts to Ultra Despair Girls, and actually digging into these themes makes it clear that the game’s a lot smarter than it might appear at first.

Danganronpa Another Episode Ultra Despair Girls is still a profound story with improved mechanics on PS4, but its standing in the series’ narrative has shifted for the worst since it originally launched.

Not everything Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls attempts to do is a success, but it’s definitely worth playing for anyone already invested in the series. The gunplay might not rival Titanfall 2, but the different bullet-types make combat feel more akin to a solving a puzzle. Much like the story it tells, it’s far from perfect, but there are enough good ideas to make it a worthwhile endeavor.

Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls is a nice spin-off expanding the story from the two main episodes, also shifting to an action-shooting oriented gameplay through a third-person camera. There is enough to enjoy for the fans of the series, but graphics feels quite old albeit the remastered visuals and there are also old problems imported from the original PS Vita version.

Ultra Despair Girls is not a perfect game, but brings some new fresh action to Danganrompa's verbose style. A decent spin-off, mostly enjoyable if you have already played the main episodes.

Ultra Despair Girls’ loop of exploring dungeon-like areas, mowing down waves of Monokuma bots, and switching between the ranged combat of Komaru and melee barrages of Genocide Jack… means you’ve got a third person shooter unlike any other.

Danganronpa: Another Episode is a good entry in the series and a fun game to play for those who love the series. Unfortunately this porting fails to offer anything new from the Playstation Vita version, and even the old problems are still here.

Ultra Despair Girls may not be as great as the first two Danganronpa titles, but it's still a worthwhile experience for fans of the multimedia franchise. There is plenty to look forward to in this entry, especially since Another Episode takes a wider look at the world than its predecessors. Getting through some of the shooting bits may be a little rough, but overall Another Episode is a game worth playing through.

First presented as a PS Vita game in 2015, Ultra Despair Girls sure looks it.

Danganronpa: Ultra Despair Girls offers an exciting and decidedly chilling story for fans who have followed the series since its inception, with callbacks to the original game and important revelations those in touch with the games won’t want to miss. Unfortunately for newcomers or those who aren’t as in tune with Danganronpa, there’s not much here to convert anyone.

The shift to third-person shooter is a novel idea, but soon becomes unbearable.

Technically it may not surprise you (it's a Vita port) and the gameplay may not be perfect but this game is ultimately about its narrative and flamboyant aesthetics and when it comes to these it is truly memorable. It will make you stop and think which is something not every game can do. Special mention for the pop art version of Venice! Full Review »

The story is as wacky as you'd expect from a Danganronpa title and delves into some extremely dark topics. As with previous DanganronpaThe story is as wacky as you'd expect from a Danganronpa title and delves into some extremely dark topics. As with previous Danganronpa titles, things are left relatively unexplained at first and it's not until a ways into the game that it becomes clearer what the villains true reasons and motivations are, it comes together eventually but feels sloppy at first so be prepared to be a bit confused as to what's going on until around the halfway point.

Komaru and Toko are a fun double act that keeps things interesting and watching their relationship develop is one of the true highlights. Character development in general is well done and as stated above, the narrative eventually comes together.

The actual game play is very simple and fairly lacking and while the game isn't so challenging that it often becomes an issue, Komaru's slow movement speed can make certain boss fights frustrating as it can be very difficult to avoid certain attacks. I also strongly recommend using the manual camera setting as I found the automatic camera tends to drunkenly flail around, making it hard to see where you're going and makes keeping track of where enemies are a chore.

Overall I enjoyed the experience enough to recommend, especially if you're a fan of the Danganronpa series but don't expect a highly polished experience from a game play perspective.

+ Well told story, even if it takes a while to come together
+ Komaru and Toko are a fun duo
    + Character development
+ Puzzles are fun although not particularly challenging

Neutral : The shooting game play is mostly functional if uninteresting

    - Occasionally frustrating game play due to Komaru's slow movement
    - The automatic camera is terrible
    - There's a mini-game and sub-boss just before the third main boss that I found extremely uncomfortable, thankfully it's reasonably short
