Don't let the great review scores fool you. This game was in no way created to run on a PS4. I like story-driven games, which leaves a mark by the time you're done with it. If these are the games that are praised nowadays for a story, well...

And kinda the only reason why you'd want to continue playing, despite being in a dull story. The story just feels like a vague reason to build the game around it. Remedy has some of the most amazing story-driven games, this one is not it.
All in all, an average Remedy game. Not at all GOTY or anything.

The game seems to be broken. I was looking half an hour for getting an elevator to work. After giving up and trying again a few hours later, I realized that the elevator was not activated because an enemy did not spawn.

Well, this game is a mediocore, boring, repetitive scam. You are just wondering around a huge office building, shooting up weird people, reading nonsence notes and documents, listening to npc's uninteresting stories... It's just dull "mysterious" nonsense with fancy raytracing eyecandy graphics.

The whole game uses a metroidvania style, where you return to earlier zones, unlocking new parts of them. This is accomplished through security card levels and quests rather than items, but, it's still a good way of navigating the environment.

The story itself is well told and more interesting than most games these days. It doesn't hold your hand and explain things. However, if you listen to the dialogue, and talk to the NPCs you'll piece it together. If you are really invested, there's plenty of additional material to find in the game and read.

The only real weakness for me is that enemy variety does get a bit repetitive after a while.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I made an account just for this game.

    Pros:
-Graphics - The game looks great.
-Environmental design - The environments are unique and well thought out. It would make for a cool walking simulator.

    Cons:
-Story - The game feels like a cool exploration game that somebody tacked a story onto.
-Characters - Ahti is the only good character. All the other characters just get an eye roll.
-Checkpoints - The checkpoint system is really annoying, kicking you back to the last control point that you went to. This is especially annoying when dealing with difficult battles where you will die and need to run for 3 solid minutes to get back to where you died.
-Combat - Combat is either insultingly easy or pointlessly frustrating. This comes down to a combination of the energy cooldown, gun reloading, inability to regen health, and the abilities/AI of the enemies. Pair that with the checkpoint system, and a few battles might make you decide that you have better ways to spend your time than running from checkpoint to battle, getting hit by one homing missile, then flailing around trying to pick up health from enemies while simultaneously getting one-shotted by another homing missile... And then having to run back from the checkpoint to repeat it until you are lucky enough to not die.
-Health - You have to pick up health from enemies that you have damaged. It is easy to get pinned-down in battles with effectively no health, and there is no realistic way to heal. So you just have to die. Great. In a game full of abilities and sci-fi stuff, would it be too much to ask for a regen ability? Throw me a frickin' bone here!
-Abilities - The shield ability is useless. With the shield active, you can't use your pistol or other abilities. It is not even a good shield. You still take damage with it active... Why? Probably just to annoy the player like everything else in this game. The dodge ability is only useful for skipping fights to make your long, arduous journey from a checkpoint back to where you died. It is also marginally effective for dodging homing missiles, but 50% of the time there is nowhere to dodge, or you get hit regardless. The throw ability is good. The seize ability might be useful, but the only time you can really use it without getting demolished in the meantime is during easy fights where you don't really need it anyway.

The only reason to play this game is to explore the environment. The mediocre story and completely unlikable characters combined with the inconsistent combat just makes this feel like some kind of sight-seeing tour where somebody slaps you in the face every 15 minutes. At some point you decide it's a better use of your time to find literally anything else to do.

In summary, sorting laundry is a more interesting and entertaining experience than playing this game all the way through.

The weird and interesting in Control is overshadowed by extremely frustrating and dull combat. There seems to be a need in Remedy games to stuff them with enemies to shoot at - this has ruined this game this time. I would have much preferred this is there was a lot less repetitive combat and more of the weird!

This game is absolutely amazing! One of the best Jedi games ever made. Just the destruction alone is hours of fun. Not to mention how crazy the story is along with the well spoken dialog, tons of hidden backstory you can find littered all throughout the game. And did I mention you're basically a Jedi with a gun? Hands down my game of 2019. 10/10!

I want to give this game a much higher rating. It has nice gameplay and a very compelling story. It's seriously let down by textures loading in at severely low resolution making things like like an N64 eta game at times. This is inexcusable considering how long the game has been out now. It should have been patched very soon after launch.

    Remedy R.I.P.?
A bad game with crude mechanics. The story of the SCP foundation was thrown out, replaced by a surrogate.
Backtracking, grinding, terrible characteristics pumping, instant respawn, only two guns in one moment (although the plot is all one gun) - to do so is an indelible disgrace for a company with a reputation for innovators.

The worst problem with the game objectively is the technical performance. The frame rate often slows to a literal crawl, making combat frustrating and difficult. But even outside of hectic scenes, the frame stutter is noticeable. As in, EVERY time you come out of the main menu, the game takes a few seconds to stabilize. This severely impacts gameplay, as you're often killed by attacks that seemingly came out of nowhere.

Another thing is just a general sloppiness to presentation. Menus are overly convoluted and dense. Firing at an enemy often obscures said enemy. The map is almost entirely useless. All these may sound like nitpicks, but it's enough to turn what was initially a fun sense of being lost to a frustrating inability to navigate the world in multiple aspects.

You get to kill people at low hp by ripping them off the ground with such force that it breaks them. And then you get to hurl their lifeless corpses at other bad guys with such form it kills the other guy.

Hideo Kojima has a frekin cameo!

It all takes place in a building that is alive and moves and shifts and reorganizes itself right in front of your eyes.

The game is the start of something amazing. I feel bad for people who can't appreciate awesome.

I really loved the somewhat weird and mysterious story, the absolutely stunning art direction, the run and gun mechanics that they managed to nail almost to perfection, the astonishing sound design and that Remedy vibe. What I absolutely did not enjoy was this artificial and forced difficulty. I'm talking checkpoints mostly.. i get that it's a nod to Souls-like games, but not everyone (far from that) likes or enjoys those games. I certainly don't. More than that, I don't have time to play the same challenge a hundred times, I only have a few hours after works to enjoy anything and I speak for all of us thirty-somethings out there. It makes me very angry at myself and the game to the extent that I'm about to drop it..which is unfortunate because there's a lot to love. I appreciate them making the main storyline fairly normal in difficulty, amount of backtracking and...dying. But the side missions/challenges are something. I still have three unfinished one just because even after giving them 20-30 tries I can't do it. It breaks my heart. All it takes is adding a difficulty level options. Call it "for **** or whatever, I don't care, it will make the experience so much better for many of us non-hardcore players. I will forgive the budget-level of cutscenes, oftentimes terrible framerates (I understand base PS4 is at the end of its life) and claustrophobic environments that can get boring soon. Really hoping something like that will get introduced in the upcoming dlcs. Thanks Remedy for doing games your way. Expand

The combat is rather tough but rewarding once you get the hang of it's many mechanics and options. The story is fine with inspirations from the X-Files and Twilight Zone but characters are possibly the weakest part of the game but the style and aesthetics more then make up for with almost every frame looking like an abstract painting brought to life by a disturbed artist. The fluid gameplay with great art direction is a must play if your a fan of Remedy or any third person shooter for that matter. This is my game of the year by a long shot. Expand

I don’t want to use the word masterpiece lightly, but what else do you call the combination of gleefully chaotic gameplay with earnest storytelling in a setting as refreshingly unique as Bioshock? What else do you call a combat system that goes so far beyond the simple act of shooting a gun without drilling down into a set of intricate menus and complicated controls? What else do you call darkly malevolent horror that doesn’t feel like it was cribbed from someplace else? What else do you call the crowning achievement of a studio with a unique voice, an uneven track record, and 25 years of experience? If there’s a better word to describe what Remedy has achieved with Control, I can’t think of it.
