The oldest house architecture is the coolest setting for long time in games. Game play is solid Remedy quality and the there's nice tricks to take advantage in battles. Points from nine to ten because Ahti with his Finnish idioms in English.

Flawed, yet endearing, Control channels the likes of Prey, Alan Wake, and Max Payne in the best and worst respects of its presentation. Even with prevalent technical issues and frame drops across all platforms, the title proves itself as being a unique and highly entertaining experience that has the potential of becoming a definitive cult classic later down the line.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I waited for the two DLC packs to release before I reviewed this game to see if I would change my score of 7 to something else. Unfortunately, as you can see by the score, I didn't think too much of the DLC. But let me say that it was still good DLC, but you wouldn't be missing out on much if you didn't play it. Now the main game. The story was very confusing and I had no idea what the hell was going on. It tries to be creative in ways that, in my opinion, don't work out too well. The game had a huge frame dropped after you unpause so I just opened the other menu instead of pausing throughout the game. The main character was a very bland protagonist and could've been replaced by anyone else and nothing would change. The map was confusing to navigate at times, often leading me to get lost. The weapon forms were creative and while I would've liked to see a few more forms, I was fine with the ones I had. The supporting characters were some of my favorite parts throughout the story, mostly because they had more personality than Jesse. The cutscenes look very pretty but the way some characters talk looked off to me. There's honestly a lot of good things in this game, although I would only recommend playing it if you really want to. Viel ghosting und schlechte skalierung füren dazu das es wie ein reiner pixelhaufen aussieht und alles was mehr als 3 meter weg ist sieht aus wie brei. Und egal was man macht. Expand

This game got a great world-building. I found the start a little bit rough because I did not understand everything. But that`s what makes the game so great, mysteries. You don`t understand everything and this is what makes it so special.

The gameplay is pretty standard, nothing incredible. But the world, the story, and the side quests shine really well. I just want to find more lore every time.

    * Ahti and his Finnish cursing is love. Also, his singing.
    * Mix of shooting and telekinesis feels great. You need to switch between the two. And the final chaos of battles is energising.

    Cons:
    * On PS4 the frame rate drops in battles. So all the destruction can feel destructing. Also, the game crushed couple of times. So technically it could use some polish.
    * I don't get how FBC can function with their death rate of personnel. Also, no one cares for deaths of their colleagues. So the world feels empty and game-y at times.
    * The level navigation is frustrating after mid-game. Many doors are closed. And with minimalist architecture it's easy to get lost. I wasn't able to remember level layouts even after many hours with the game.

I enjoyed the first 2 hours or so. I would be able to enjoy this a lot more if there was a difficulty adjustment option or at least some health regen. I found the game stupidly easy and then stupidly difficult which sucks because the story seems like it might be good. Unfortunately I will never know.

This game is at its best when absurdist influences make their way in—corridors are twisting, night skies are appearing in the middle of a New York building, a light switch takes you to a motel that does/doesn’t/happens to exist. These are memorable and unique experiences that have caused me to recommend the game to several friends.

And the gameplay is fun, with several different strategies you can take to complete the story in terms of how you want to upgrade your Jesse. To stick it in a nutshell, it’s an FPS, except you’re a Jedi. Come on, smile. I know you can. It’s fun.

The story was a bit too long, however. It seemed like they ran out of material, so a few of the later main story chapters are just filler. In addition, the side quests are really great when you’re tracking down some crazy item that is going to present you with a unique and innovative puzzle you have to solve in order to capture it, but not as great when it’s as simple as ‘Find the pouches of this dude’s missing squad mates.’

Finally, the game is pretty easy. If you stay on top of upgrading your skill tree, you’re going to be just fine, and if you do what I did and max out your Jedi powers as soon as you can, you’ll one-shot most enemies until the game is 70% through.

All in all, I give it a 9/10, and I do declare it to be one of the most memorable gaming experiences I’ve had. Remedy.........well played.

EDIT after completing all DLC: I raised my score from a 9 to a perfect 10, and I mean it. The absurdist writing and unique level constructions combined with fun combat and great ambience outweigh the slow middle of the story, which was my only complaint. Fabulous game.

Also save system is complete insanity. After this low lever enemy kills you, you will spend 2-5 minutes walking back to place where you ware killed, just to get killed again in matter of few seconds. And if you are walking trough some previous deathmatch area, game will randomly decide to (or not to) spawn some enemies so you don't get bored.

Story is classic Remedy meta crap about nothing and unlike Alan Wake it is not captivating at all. it is actually pretty dull and uninteresting, and unfinished. Maybe story is finished in DLC, but I have no interest in buying them because I hate this game.

On positive side, graphic is OK and pseudo 50s USA setting is kinda nice.

I felt like the story had too many blank points - dialogues that were supposed to create mystery, but eventually felt redundant or not very important. One thing has to be said for the almost perfect game length - the main story line doesn't go longer than it needs to. It's defnitely for the best as the shooting parts after a few hours start to become a little tedious, though the gameplay itself is definitely an improvement compared to Remedy's last entry. Worth playing if you're a fan of sci-fi themes or looking for something not too long to play for an afternoon or two. Or at least just to have a chance to have fun in the 'ashtray maze'. Expand

In contrast a side narrative playing out though video recordings was far more engaging somehow??

To end on a positive the combat mechanics were good overall. Combining shooting and telekinetic abilities and a decent skill tree allowing you to focus on your style of play. The oldest house was also a very cool concept and I enjoyed its retro futuristic design.

this is actually a brilliant game that is fun to play. However the developers decision to lock the next-gen upgrade behind a new "ultimate edition" that is identical to the current deluxe edition of the game is a slap in the face to anyone that bought into and supported this game.

I'm not speaking to the quality of the game, just the lack of equality customers can enjoy.

For a game set in a boring government building, Control has a lot of excitement and so many nooks and crannies to find. Ultimately, this game was held back by my PS4 Pro's hardware. If I had the chance, would have played it first on PC, but I still had a great time on PS4. If you're looking for a game with great game play and fun exploration, look no further. While Control had some minor flaws and room for improvement, it was still a stellar title. Expand

Even after finishing the game I want to play it badly and game allows to do so: DLC+ side quests are amazing. Somehow this game was more than TLOU 2 or Death Stranding. Unexpectedly. Give it try. The gameplay is an accurate hit and also an absolute miss.

The shooting and combat are one of the best in the industry, its Remedy after all. They make games that has some of the best shooting and combat mechanics. With the added Telekinetic powers, it adds so much depth and mayhem towards the combat gameplay. I have no qualms with the combat, although some enemy types are literally designed to take the piss out of you.

As i also mentioned, it is also an absolute miss. Let me start with the one of the most atrocious map and mission designs I have ever seen. Do not blame yourself once you get yourself lost for an hour or two just trying to figure out where you are heading towards. Besides that, not giving you a mission brief, there will be no markers, and the objectives are so vague. I have spent hours just running around figuring out what the hell am I supposed to go and what exactly to do. The puzzles are designed poorly as well. Trust me, a regular visit to Youtube walkthroughs will be frequent. And it is going to be absolutely frustrating. The checkpoint system is bad. When you die and fail a segment of the mission, it places you several corridors back. It will take unneeded time hiking back to the same place you died. A terrible design and I have no idea why Remedy did not spot this.

The story, I apologize. But it is sub-par. The writing and the character development are weak. Narrative is very drab. You can't connect at all with Jesse, the main character. As you slog through the missions with her vague narrative of the story. She isn't a very compelling character. Remedy seemed unable to land great storylines of old, such as Max Payne and Alan Wake. Quantum Break's story and main characters also suffer from the same syndrome and I really hope they improve their storytelling in future games.

Graphics? Awesome. Although the level designs are nothing to shout about. But the game, at times is absolutely beautiful to look at. The lighting are great. Visual effects on the telekinetic powers has weight and looks fantastic. Physics of objects getting destroyed are very impressive as well. I played the game on maxed out settings on a 1660ti and the performance is decent although not great. Overall, Control is at times, very visually astounding.

Overall, its a 6.8 out of 10. Control has some really impressive graphics and physics, almost next gen at times. Coupled with Remedy's trademark combat mechanics. This is a great recipe for an amazing shooter. I just cannot give the game anything higher due to the certain design aspects such as map navigation, puzzles and mission structure in addition to a sub-par storyline bottlenecking the whole experience down.

Should you get it? Yes. At a very discounted price. If you can look past its bad design choices in exchange to get yourself a chunk of that Remedy-styled combat mechanics. Why not? But prepare to have a good amount of patience with the game tolerating its glaring flaws.

This is half a game sold for full price. And not a great one at that.

Remedy seems to have found what they thought was a clever way to stretch out a very thin game - by having the save points far in between and make you replay large portions again and again and again. Extremely infuriating, to the point where I turned it off and said "Thats it" at 80% into the game. Gameplay

Extremely infuriating, to the point where I turned it off and said "Thats it" at 80% into the game.

Gameplay mechanics are pretty fun, especially launching things into enemies and the physics is the highlight of the game. It does get old after a while though, as basically everything is just an arena shooter with a grab-and-launch twist to it. Enemy variation is _very_ thin, you got flying monsters and ground monsters, that's about it. Most of them are very spongy and not very satisfying to kill (We get weird particle effects. Not as effective as blood splash and gibs would have been).

They are going for a strange atmosphere in the game, which sometimes works. But the story is just a confusing and uninteresting mess. Your looking for your brother in a building, that's about it.
Environments do look good, but there is a obvious lack of variation. After 2 hours of playing this game, you have seen the whole game environment - it is all concrete and metal stuff in what feels like a bunker.

To try and mix things up they have a few puzzles as well, none of them are any good, its all just very confusing and headache inducing (If you do play, use a guide - there is no fun to derive from these puzzles).

It feels like a missed opportunity - there are some glimpse of greatness in this game but it is lost in an ocean of tediousness. Sad to see Remedy, which has produced such great games as Max Payne and Alan Wake give us this. Unless on a deep sale, stay away from this one.

After playing through the game and obtaining the platinum trophy last night, I can say that Control s a good game, yet a flawed game that could have been better.
    Pros:
Solid story with solid characters, mysterious plot that keeps you playing, incredible lore, fun core gameplay and great sound design. Great soundtrack.
    Cons:
Terrible checkpoint system that has you spawn at the latest control point you accessed whenever you die, which means you have to spend time waiting for the loading screen AND traversing back to the place you were at. This can be really frustrating.
The game punishing you for dying by taking away 10% of your source. This only adds insult to the injury that is the checkpoint system.
A combination of a bad health system and random difficulty spikes. Several enemies in the game as well as bosses in side mission have cheap attacks that do a ton of damage. You will find yourself getting killed with just 2 or 3 hits a lot. I have health 6 unlocked along with 2 personal mods that increase my health and even still enemies can melt your health if you **** up just once. The blue orbs from killed enemies hardly give you back any health and I think that being able to carry consumables to restore your health would have been great.
Shielded enemies can be frustrating to fight at times because their shield regenerate quickly.
The game's mini-map can be awkward and difficult to use at times and you find yourself getting lost frequently. Jukebox expeditions are pointless since you can get prime & absolute mods by just playing the game.
Occasional frame rate drops that last 2-4 seconds on both the base PS4 and the PS4 Pro (especially the base PS4) during intense fights. The game also stutters briefly every time after it autosaves.

It's a good thing I waited for a price drop after I saw DigitalFoundry's video on the poor performance on consoles. Had I bought it at launch and payed $60 for it, I would have given it a 5 or 6 out of 10 because there's no way that I would consider massive performance issues on launch acceptable. The game in it's current state is relatively stable. All in all, and 7/10 game.

The combat is probably the best part about the game, the superpowers all feel great to use, and although the gunplay is not amazing this doesn't detract from the experience. The enemies and levels are very repetitive though which makes dragging through the game's 10 or so missions very tedious.

The areas all look very uninspiring, and laid out in such a way that you will spend a lot of time simply trying to figure out where to go. There is a map but this is more or less useless since areas often sprawl vertically across many floors which the map seems to completely ignore.

The mission structure is also very bland, with practically every mission consisting of going from point A to B to C while fighting enemies along the way. More frustratingly, one type of side mission (bureau alerts) is given to the player seemingly at random, assigned a time limit and often requires the player to stop whatever they are doing and track back to the location the side mission requires. Much of my 15-20 hours with the game was spent simply traversing the same areas over and over again (often getting lost), fighting the same enemies which always respawn even in areas you have already cleared.

The abilities and mods all play it very safe and do not deviate from the core gameplay in any interesting ways. The story is certainly there and expanded through collectibles that are easily found throughout the world, but it failed to captivate me enough to compensate for the rest of the unenjoyable experience.

On a PS4 slim the game runs at 30fps, with a little input lag (not massively noticeable though), looks unimpressive at all times and often drops to 10fps or lower when too much is happening on screen. Nothing about the look or scope of the game warrants such poor performance, so this is very disappointing for a game in 2019.

Overall, this game has some very fun powers which would not feel out of place in an inFamous game (perhaps even better than the last inFamous entry). However, virtually everything else about this game lets it down, and the powers alone are not enough to make it a fun experience.

This is an example of a game ahead of it's time. It seems to crave ray tracing, this game would really be much better on ps5. The gameplay mechanics are nothing incredible, but they are just exactly what they need to be. The setting and tone of this game make it an instant classic, yet it has aspects where it simply begs for having had more time and resource poured into it, like the narrative. This game could be an instant 10 if it had a few more hours of story telling, world building and character development. I say this because the hours it does provide of narrative are superb, good writing combined with intelligent themes and astounding cinematography. As i said, this game craves the ps5, maybe after an update of the game that makes use of an SSD and ray tracing, i might change this score to a 10. Expand

If you want to play this game for story and fun: don't buy it. It's very difficult and it's not even possible to change difficulty level. Enemies can kill you with just two shots in just the second battle in the game. Also, aim assistant doesn't work at all so better be good at aiming. Usually, I'm finishing all the games that I play but this I deleted after about 1h because I already know that this game will frustrate me. In my dictionary frustration =/= fun. Besides that the game is badly optimized for basic PS4, textures load slowly, audio stutter... Critics can be trusted with their hurra optimistic reviews. This is the game that people will talk about for generations? LOL it was discounted quickly after the premiere and nobody is talking about this game 2 years later. I could get a nice pizza for the price of this game. Wasted money. Expand

The gameplay and graphics are good, but not perfectly polished. Some sections are, however, absolutely perfect, and feel great to play through. If you played it, you know what I'm talking about...

Average graphics, average story, slightly above average gameplay. At first, I was interested in this world and story, but as time progressed the interest went away. I don't think this a bad game or I wouldn't give it a 7. Considering it was nominated for game of the year though, it is overrated. Most I would spend on it would be $20 usd.

Probably the best 3rd person shooter from the gameplay point of view in this generation.

Impactful gunplay bolstered by a telekinetic twist, and a mystery you’ll be turning over for a long time afterwards. Welcome to the Oldest House, Director. [Issue#167, p.79]

The writing, direction, and performances are consistently brilliant. This is Remedy at the peak of its game. Control feels like a company rediscovering itself, waking from a long slumber. Remedy’s legs work as intended once more, the vestiges of sleep paralysis a distant memory.

I don’t want to use the word masterpiece lightly, but what else do you call the combination of gleefully chaotic gameplay with earnest storytelling in a setting as refreshingly unique as Bioshock? What else do you call a combat system that goes so far beyond the simple act of shooting a gun without drilling down into a set of intricate menus and complicated controls? What else do you call darkly malevolent horror that doesn’t feel like it was cribbed from someplace else? What else do you call the crowning achievement of a studio with a unique voice, an uneven track record, and 25 years of experience? If there’s a better word to describe what Remedy has achieved with Control, I can’t think of it.
