The campaign is the best in the Call of Duty franchise since Black Ops. It has stunning visuals, great characters and has a compelling story. It has replay-ability and manages to stay interesting. The only real negative of the campaign is that it is too action packed, which is a common problem with COD games. Huge explosions, great falls and unrealistic odds make the game unrealistic and goofy.

The online multiplayer (which for most is the highlight of the game) is the polar opposite of the campaign. The visuals take a hit and are noticeably worse than the story. The maps are boring and not very re playable and it is a forgettable and boring experience. The maps are small and linear, the invisible walls are unforgivable and 2 of the very limited maps are obvious copies of Modern Warfare maps. Unlike the campaign which was over the top, the multiplayer is so under whelming. On top of this, the multiplayer suffers from pay to win mechanics and poor servers. Most guns are locked behind loot boxes which you can either pay real money for or grind like hell, only to end up with customised weapon grips. A FPS has customised weapon grips which are barely visible! As for servers, i played the game about 7-8 months after release and i keep being kicked from games and being locked out of matches. After 8 months, this should have been fixed.

The final game mode is Zombies. Zombies is fun and interesting. There is a story and multiple different objectives and the map is huge. It is difficult however and is best played with friends in co-op.

Over all, this game is a mixed bag, excelling in some game modes but horrifically failing in others. The campaign is great, as is Zombies, however the Online seriously holds the game back from greatness.

My only problem is as follows:
My game is lagging like really a lot. Every time I play, it starts to lag. Then when I want to continue someone killed me or my game does not want to continue. So, every time this happens, I must restart the whole game and start from the beginning. Then I also want to ask to bring in more powerful weapons. For example, it takes 4 shots to kill someone, and by that time someone already killed me. My game also takes very long to connect online or in multiplayer.

    The Pros of the game:
I really like the maps in the game. It has really nice hideouts for sniping. I also like to follow the story of how the game takes place. The best for me is the great graphics. It really looks realistic.

I would recommend this game to people who likes war games.

This game contains a truly fantastic single player campaign. Story as good as most Hollywood war movies, not far off the likes of Fury (simple and overly patriotic but entertaining). Gameplay is tight, accurate and very rewarding.

In my opinion it does what it sets out to do excellently. Don't expect the depth of an open world RPG- this is an action packed, linear shooter that rewards

In my opinion it does what it sets out to do excellently. Don't expect the depth of an open world RPG- this is an action packed, linear shooter that rewards reflexes and accuracy. The story knits it together nicely and has some moral and historical messages that while a little trite might be of value to those not familiar with WW2 history.

Graphics are realistic, very detailed and smooth on the normal PS4, and the cut scenes could genuinely be stylized live action at times.

The campaign is relatively short but extremely dense, there is not a second of boredom. Reasons to replay include higher difficulties and collectibles. It is nicely varied with sniping, trench warfare, turrets, stealth, planes, tanks, jeeps and more. The short tank sequence in particular is brilliantly tense if you get into the mindset.

There are some horrible weapons too like flamethrowers and double-barrelled shotguns make you pity the Nazi victims at times.

I don't play multiplayer FPS so cannot comment on that. Zombies looks like a fun addition.

It's not a 10 because it isn't incredibly original, and the campaign could be a little longer, with perhaps a bit more flexibility on routes or tactics.

I gather most of the griping on here is about the multiplayer. I'd honestly ignore those complaints and highly recommend picking up the game just for the campaign.

This franchise has taken up thousands of my life ever since I discovered World At War all those years ago but ladies and gentlemen I come to you today a broken man. Words cannot describe how much of an insult to our community this is. This is a game that IF you manage to connect will shove microtransactions and supply drops down your throat at every screen and opportunity its absurd. Once you clear away that trash and try to find a game there's a solid chance you'll be disconnected before it even starts. If it starts and you maintain a ping less than 100 then congrats you'll get to enjoy the most inconsistent gameplay I have ever experienced in an online game. The pacing in a humble game of TDM can change so fast. In one moment it'll be balls to the wall and then absolute silence for the rest of the game. The maps are simplistic, uninspired and boring to look at. In each DLC pack you pay for all you will get is a few new maps that are just as **** as the vanilla ones. Zombies has been turned into an overly complicated mess which is just completely against the ethos of zombies. The Colour palate is bland and washed out, the menu navigation is the slowest and most broken it has ever been in the history of the franchise and will straight up block you from accessing parts of the menu for no apparent reason. The campaign uninspiring, the script and its delivery make me want to do a Van Gough. At no point has this game felt worth the price it makes you pay. This game fails on all fronts. Microsoft had the good taste many years back to apologise for Windows Vista many years back and and that was good of them but, Activision, the only thing you can do to make up for this dumpster fire is to give a full refund to all who bought the game and desire one. This game, from a standpoint of gameplay and user friendliness , is more flawed than No Mans Sky. standpoint Expand

    - The MP system sucks, too many perks that never get used and the kill streaks are actually boring. Along with that, it takes too long to unlock what you want with the skin you favor being locked behind a loot crate. I quit the game only after playing it off and on for 4 months and i only collected maybe 15% of the stuff that I actually wanted.

Gameplay wise, it's your usual COD minus wall running, boost jumping which isn't a bad thing when the game actually works, yes, that's right the game runs like total crap!
The game suffers from so many wtf moments of how did I die, why does my gun seem like its doing less damage than his and this isn't just me saying this I've seen big Youtuber/Twitch players say the exact same thing!
The lack of proper servers and the problematic lag compensator really screw this game up couple all of that with the fact the game matches people from across the world to play in lobbies, seriously how is that even happening!!

Authenticity next, do they deliver? HELL NO they don't! Guns have terrible fake animations, it's just incredibly lazy, for an example when you shoot one bullet from the KAR98k and you go to reload instead of putting a single bullet in the character puts an entire stripper clip into the gun and they even put an entire stripper clip into the gun when you only have 1 bullet left in reserve, it's just absolutely laughable!
Guns have no recoil they all shoot like damn lasers, snipers are just a one-hit kill from any range which just makes them the total unskilled weapon of many peoples choice.

    Then zombies... oh my god!!
Making something easier isn't making it better, the zombies are basically invisible, yes they run faster, but it's so damn easy to avoid them you can run through them essentially and the map complexity is nil, void, there is no complexity or teamwork required so props to Sledgehammer on that *slow clap*...

Finally, the story, it's a good war experience it displays some epic moments, nice change up of gameplay requiring health packs instead of regenerating health, but the story is far too short and lacks the same storytelling level that Treyarch brought to such a high standard.

Overall, It's maybe not as low as I scored it, but the game is such a huge let down that I had to score it this way, so much for a short and sweet review.

This is not a WW2 game. As stated by many others, this is a just modern warfare reskinned to look like WW2. I was very excited about this game, because I was an avid player of the original CODs in the WW2 era. I was hoping to get that experience with updated features. I am beyond disappointed. To help others avoid buying this game with false expectations, I will tell you what aspects ruined it for me.

    -BOLT ACTION IRON SIGHTS DESTROYED
Firstly, the only weapon I used in COD1, UO, and COD2 was the bolt action rifle with iron sights. It took skill, and it fit my play style of not jumping around like an idiot with an SMG. Bolt action rifles (iron sights only) also happened to be the most common weapon in WW2 apart from American forces. What does COD WW2 give us? One bolt action rifle with iron sights that was put into the game as an afterthought and must be unlocked AND take up an attachment slot. Scopes are the default. In addition the iron sight bolt action rifle still handles like there is a scope on it. The animation and timing looks and feels like you are trying to look through the lens. This exclusion of the one of the most quintessential aspects of the WW2 genre is a slap in the face to all bolt action iron sight lovers.

-This is still nothing more than a full auto/quick scoping nightmare.
Full autos existed in the original CODs, but they were nowhere near the instakill 'who shoots first' death machines that comprise CODWW2. Yes, a good player could iron sight someone at long range with a carefully aimed headshot, but not at full auto. The original full auto weapons wouldn't melt down 4 players instantly halfway across the map. The recoil was far greater, and trigger control was necessary for accuracy even at close range.

    -Bullet piercing is outrageous.
Bullets from even small caliber fire piercing thick metal surfaces is ludicrous. It's even worse on rinse and repeat maps with predictable hiding places. Just shoot through where you know someone will be. Yawn.

    -Tactical awareness of surroundings ruined.
Then: Stealth determined by careful movement and selective fire. Enemy positions determined by careless movement and selective fire. You learned to locate the enemy by listening and instinct. The distinct sound of a Garand after it fired its last round giving you a brief window of opportunity. The difference between an enemy and ally based on the type of gun being fired. Does a German break cover to pursue the location of the person firing an STG44? Not likely. Weapons were restricted to the forces that used them. This seemingly unimportant aspect makes a world of difference in actual gameplay. You had only your senses to help you. Yes people still did the "run n' gun"/"spray n pray", but they were at a serious disadvantage to a calculated player.

Now: Any gun, any player. Weapon distinctions rendered pointless. Recon scorestreak to show enemy positions. So much overpowering ambient noise and/or perks to make listening for the enemy no more than a crapshoot.

    -Screen shake over the top.
My screen shakes constantly. Far away explosions make your screen shake violently. It's a stupidly poor attempt at immersion and gives me a headache.

    -Melee Showdowns
Who didn't enjoy watching two bolt actions clashing at close range and having a melee duel? Dancing around trying to land a carefully aimed rifle butt to the face. It was almost a common understanding, an unspoken gentleman's agreement if you will, to duke it out. It was an endearing aspect of the originals. Well, that's not a thing anymore. The old mechanics made it viable. Now, well, the game design doesn't even allow for such a thing to happen.

    Bottom Line:
I made the mistake of pre-ordering this game on PSN due to my excitement but couldn't get a refund after I played the Beta. I didn't download the actual game and play it for 6 months because the Beta disgusted me. They destroyed practically everything that made the original games great. Why do I have to play for hours to unlock the most common weapon type in WW2 (iron sighted bolt action)?
***Yes I am aware that the American standard issue was not a bolt action, but the British, German, Russian, Japanese, Italian, etc were all issued bolt action iron sighted weapons as the primary small arm***
Why is the only ONE available designed like garbage?
This game was marketed with lies that appealed to the emotional attachment players had to the originals and only delivered hot garbage. The game doesn't even feel like WW2.

I don't care about the micro transactions. You don't have to buy crates to get loot and unlockables. You get plenty of crates from orders and contracts. If people want to waste money on overpriced crates, that's their prerogative.

Buy the game used if you must. There is certainly no shortage of used copies.

I personally enjoyed the game quite a lot. With this being said I also had a lot of issues with this game. Some of these were the maps aren’t the best, aren’t enough guns, killstreaks aren’t great, and the loot boxes are my biggest complaint. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Firstly, the campaign doesn't even touch on the idea of Russians, Japanese and/or the German point of view. Same old "americans were the only one with souls and feelings, germans were robots" clichè. They included a black person with another "you underestimated the blacks" clichè and totally dumped historical correctness for the sake of political. Same goes for the women characters which had no purpose to be women and could have easily be replaced by more appropriately for the historical time men.
The game conveys no feeling, similar to how WAW conveyed feeling of horror just by the looks of the menu, the soundtrack and so on. I can associate any COD with some feeling, but I can't associate WWII to anything. In addition, I didn't notice any impressive soundtrack.

Let's touch on the Mutiplayer. The moment I open the menu I see how terrible the UI is. In fact, I wonder if it could be worse than that. It's confusing, cluttered with stuff, backgrounds change, blur and have no relation to one another when you navigate. Navigation is horrible. It feels more challenging to open weapon customization than reach lvl 20 in zombies. I can't see scoreboard during a multiplayer match. I have to go through a few tabs, then one option down, then a popup for confirmation in order to leave the match. I can go on for hours about what's wrong with the UI.
Maps are mostly terrible. 3-lane, boring, no diversity, nothing fun or special about them. Such a rushed design. I will leave it here regarding multiplayer.

Zombies are lacking the horrific Treyarch feeling. There is unnecessary customization. Playing zombies is extremely easy. No soundtrack, no cool sound effects when you pick up a drop, it just doesn't make me want to replay it.

Overall, the game is horrible, rent it, play the campaign and get rid of it.

    Gameplay-
This game is not revolutionary or innovative in a single aspect, nothing is inspired and because of that there isn't all that much interest in what you're doing. However there's a reason for this, and that is that Call Of Duty essentially has set the model for FPS games. It can't revolutionise because then it stops being true to its series. You could argue that this means the series should just stop, an argument I sit on the fence with. Anyway, the campaign is mediocre. The voice acting is good but aside from that its just occasional cinematic moments and repetitive points (and whoever created that piece of garbage tank section in the Aachen mission is going to hell, that is truly terrible). It's a Call Of Duty campaign. Not bad, definitely not great. The multiplayer I actually properly enjoyed. TDM, S&D etc are the same thing as in every other game. However war, this is just good, thank whatever god you pray to they made this. This mode is repetitive but it's actually fun, a brilliant bridge between campaign and multiplayer. It takes you along these mission based maps each with their own tense checkpoints. This kept this game from being a 4 and bumped it up to a 6. This is exactly what you'd hope for in a Call Of Duty game. The zombies is pretty good. They pivoted completely from Infinite Warfare and went for a dark, nightmarish approach, there are literal moments of almost pure darkness in the easter egg. The problem primarily with the zombies is that really there is only one base game zombies map which gets boring after completing the Easter egg for your fifth time. The mini map you get for completing the EE is just bad. It has a quick pace but it honestly feels like a tutorial map, because it is also the tutorial map, it's pretty lazy for the developer to release it as the only other map. Also David Tenants character doesn't really fit in this area of the game, he has quips and is meant to be a bit of comic relief. However their approach of a horror zombies makes his character just seem wrong.
    Aesthetic-
Visually this game has a fine aesthetic. Its hyper realistic but its very brown and grey as their primary hues. In the zombies its really cool though, the zombies are covered in torn flesh and twisted metal, it really fits their tone of a near horror approach to zombies. The soundtrack and audio is pretty good. Its got no pumping riffs and power chords like Black Ops 1, instead it's quite classical and very similar to Battlefield 1's soundtrack. Good, but nothing inspiring.
    Replayability-
If a single person says that the campaign is replayable, they are full of it. It is not even remotely interesting enough to be worth playing more than once, it's barely worth playing just that once. Multiplayer, it generally is except for War which just yes. War is the smartest, most replayable thing a COD game has implemented in years. The zombies is until you've played it for more than 20 solid goes. Then it gets stale, which is frustrating as it is designed as a mode to be done lots of times.

In conclusion, COD:WW2 is fairly uninspired with almost nothing thats particularly new or interesting. I give it a 6 as there is enough to do and is worth the price tag, however if you dislike previous Call Of Duty's then you'll dislike this one. Except for War. Mhm that is actually good. It's fine, not bad, but certainly not revolutionary either.

Basically the multiplayer is like taking a bunch of autistic children, giving them guns and crack, and throwing them into a tiny map. Hit detection is nothing short of horrific. Time after time I'd fire a shotgun point-blank into an enemy's chest only to have it not register at all and be killed. Most gunfights are based on some perverse sense of luck rather than any skill. The weapon damage has no basis in reality. HQ is a waste of time, and the micro-transactions are simply another insult to an already poor game. If you want mindless run and gun with campers, horrible hit detection, no skill required, etc. then this game is for you. If you want a half decent FPS then look somewhere else. Expand

reflex sights were rarely used on small weapons in WWII. Why does COD think its okay to use it on small weapons? Why cant they make an actual somewhat realistic game for once?????

Call of Duty WWII is a solid game, though it has MANY flaws. But before we get to the heart and soul of the game, the multiplayer, lets talk about the campaign.

Call of Duty WWII is a solid game, though it has MANY flaws. But before we get to the heart and soul of the game, the multiplayer, lets talk about the campaign.

    THE CAMPAIGN:
It's pretty good, one of the better in the series, and the first one I've actually played all the way through since BO2. This campaign is a lot of the same stuff, but it feels more engaging because of the WW2 setting, and shooting Nazis with iconic WW2 guns was pretty cool. The characters were okay, they were a bit flat, but at least there was something here. They felt like flat characters, but they were still characters, which is more than I can say about some of the other games. Overall, it was a Call of Duty campaign, and if you enjoyed the other game's campaigns, you'll enjoy this one. If you're not a fan, I would still recommend trying it, as it makes some improvements I really like, like being able to request ammo, and meds from squad mates. It was pretty good for a CoD campaign, but nothing amazing.

    THE MULTIPLAYER:
    Oh, where do I start.
First off, the good: The gameplay is fun, and it does feel more like the older Call of Dutys without the jetpacks and all that crap. It's pretty fast paced, but I found the gunplay pretty satisfying and the overall gameplay just pretty fun. Also, in this game they introduced a new mode, War, and put simply, its a blast. It's basically Battlefield's rush but in Call of Duty. You have to make it through a few objectives while the other team tries to stop you. I really like it, and hope to see it return in future titles. Yeah, so gameplay is pretty good.
And now, the bad: This game had the WORST launch in all of CoD history. The first 2-3 days I couldn't even get into a multiplayer. It finally started working for me, but it's still a bit shaky, sometimes lagging, or taking longer than it should to find a match. Other people have been getting it worse than me, and apparently can't get into a match even now. This is unacceptable for a $60 AAA game. Also, Headquarters is an epic fail. Currently, it is impossible to get into headquarters with another player, which is the whole point. Your stuck wandering around by yourself. Some achievements even require you to do things with other players, which is hard to do WHEN THERE'S NO OTHER GODDAMN PLAYERS!!!! I also just hate the idea in general, I just wanna get into a game and shoot some dudes while blasting classic rock in the background (Please tell me I'm not the only one who does that). But I don't give a s*** about "Social Score" and doing stuff in the headquarters. Why not just put all that stuff in menus? Anyways, now that I've covered some launch issues, lets cover things about the game's fundamental mechanics. Divisions is a stupid system. When they said they were "going back to their roots" I didn't think they meant they were legit going back and removing some of the great innovative features of the recent CoDs. This system was a complete step back from the pick-10 system. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Sledgehammer said this one would feature more customization than ever before, which is just a flat out lie. In fact, it''s the opposite of the truth. There's less customization options for your classes in this one.
This game is also lacking some iconic WW2 weapons. For example. the Sten, it was promised before the game launched, but it's nowhere to be seen. The Mosin Nagant, perhaps the most iconic sniper of the war, is completely absent from the game. We're also missing the Gewehr 43. This game doesn't feature a revolver of any kind either, which is most perplexing of all. Revolvers are such an iconic part of any war, I don't see why they wouldn't bother to include one in the multiplayer. Especially because there's one featured briefly in the campaign. They programmed the model and all the animations but didn't put it in the multiplayer?
And finally, black female Nazis. Just, why. NOBODY would have complained if women weren't in the game. It's almost disrespectful to all the men who fought and died in the war. Even more stupid, is that you couldn't play as a female soldier in Infinite Warfare, a game taking place a few hundred years in the future, in freaking space for crying out loud. Nope, no females in that but WW2, yup, put women in it. Wtf?
    And finally,

    THE ZOMBIES:
I'm not a huge zombies fan but this one's okay.

    THE VERDICT:
CoD WWII is a good change of pace, and a solid Call of Duty experience, but is plagued with launch issues and broken gameplay mechanics. If you're a huge Call of Duty fan, and was looking forward to this one, go ahead and buy it. If you're not really into Call of Duty and are on the fence, I might be a bit hesitant to spend $60 on it. 6/10. Solid WWII shooter, and a needed change of pace for Call of Duty.
Edit: 5 months in and I'm done. Boring gameplay, terrible maps, I only have 30 characters left, but no replay value basically.

The characters, they have charisma and you really get to care about them, having importance in the story and in the gameplay, helping you with supplies and techniques. You will have differnt types of gameplay, controlling a tank or a plane for example, giving a little of variety to the gameplay. Generally isn't that original or anything, but still pretty fun.
Multiplayer: The multiplayer isn't the best of the franchise, but it's pretty fun. They added some modes that really are worth to talk about, the mode War, it consists in one team trying do advance and complete one objective per time, and the other trying to stop it, this mode really explore the map and how you can use the map in favor or against you, it really reminded me from Rush in Battlefield 3, the mode Pop Hunt that is based on things that already existed but is soo much fun, i enjoyed that one very much, it consist in one team becoming and object and hiding, during the other is trying to find those, playing that with friends are a sure fun moment. The variety of weapons considerable, hand to hand and shooting weapons.
Zombies: This mode in this game really made me had a lot of fun, the zombies here aren't completely new but have some good and interesting inovation, the prologue passes in a small house and you can work around that and keep going on wave to wave, very fun to do it so. The Final Reich worked very well to me, a i did enjoyed how the map was constructed and how it worked out, the amount of enemies is ok, not very much. What i really liked it, are the easter eggs, it took time and aren't that easy to do, if you can get together some friends to do them, you will definely have some hours of fun and struggling.
This Call of Duty is the first one that i played since BO2, so i wasn't bored or even knowing what was going on on the franchise very much, so it possibly counted to this review.

I haven't played COD since BOP2- so cant really judge on the evolution on the next-gen platforms. But based on what I've heard its been a pretty crap Era.

    Start with the Good.
+ Visuals Looks grest especially in the campaign. Havent played any of the next-gen era titles but it seems really good. I was happy with that.

+ Zombies is still good, different but at least its not same old and they actually evolved it. But hasn't become some bloated expanded mess and have managed to keep it feeling fairly simple and ground the classic maps. They have objectives now but are entirely optional. and is better than BOP2 Zombies anyway.

+ More customisation - plenty of customisation if your into that like your character, weapon skins etc

+ War and Headquarters, adds new multiplayer depth. added value and things to do. Tries to bring a story to the multiplayer.

+ Solid Multiplayer experience, not really a plus, but if your used to what they do year in year out, and are happy with that then you know your going to get a solid pick up and play multiplayer experience to fill in your hours when your bored.

+ While I haven't played AW/BOP3/IW so I don't know if they have these features. I really like the addition of Divisions and the new way of doing Perks to create unique combinations.

    Negatives
    - My biggest gripe with COD has always been the respawn system in multiplayer progressively getting worse with each instalment coupled with the average size of maps getting smaller means I often find I have enemies closer to me than allies and usually behind me. There's no logical direction to run in when you spawn. Which with WWII is still broken it seems.

    - Loot crates, that was a obvious one to get on the list. While it doesn't really bother me for COD as its a game where you grab any gun and kill people. I don't really see the need to pay for anything for the core experience. its all mainly cosmetic. and any guns don't really hamper you.

-value for money , there is less maps at launch and have paid the same price, fair enough there's WAR mode but doesn't really justify it as I imagine its not something the core player base will get involved with. Same with map packs, less for your money.

Now the personal things that stand out for me

While COD gains superficial changes each year often depending on who's developing. Some Key features are missing or changed that I miss.

for example I loved the Support and Specialist Play styles of MF3 it was a great way to help Assist/Support and lone wolves playstyles build a different set of killstreaks/perks and bring changes to the game. While this game kinda has it with divisions and the new Perk system Its something I miss.

Killstreaks - I know its WW2 so its rooted and limited in technology etc, but Attack Dogs is missing!? I know we have paratroopers but come on! give us more streaks! - there seems to be a general lack of streaks(different streaks as well) to be fair I cant really think of any beyond the dogs that is missing, maybe drop a AI controlled tank on the battlefield that enemy team has to blow up....

    - Rooted is bad in a way - off the back of the last point, while its nice to be simple and go back to the roots, I cant help but feel they have stripped a lot meat from its bones. and while there is a solid core experience it lacks the added value to help with longevity. I feel ive grown tired on this COD instalment a lo faster than I have the others.

Overall I've given it a 7. Its Classic COD and I love it for that and can pass many hours playing it. its solid and you cant go wrong. however it hasn't evolved as a franchise and doesn't have the added value to make it worth the price. Id give it a 9 if they would fix the respawn system.

Whats Next? Call of Duty: Chronicle's - a time travelling adventure that features Easters eggs and cameos from all games. and Resets the whole timeline. and the Multiplayer maps is just remastered versions of the top 20 maps of all time.

    Gameplay:
There are good amount of weapons but for the most times all players use the same guns because some of them are over effective. Talking to you fire shotgun.
The maps are not the best part. I enjoy only 2 of the 9 maps because for the most parts there was no thought behind them.
It wouldn't be an CoD without Cheaters. I thought there couldn't be that many Cheaters on PS4 than on PC but I was wrong. There is at least one blatant 360° spinning aimboting idiot in 1 of 3 games and some other "strange" players.

    Gamemodes:
There are enough maps and modes to keep me occupied for a little while, most of them standard fps fast food.
The zombie mode is good. They changed some thing and I have to say it's refreshing.
Campaign is standard. Pew pew action with nice settings.

All in all a normal mediocre CoD with the attempt to cash in on the World War hype Battlefield 1 started. Does nothing particular wrong but neither right. Should be ok for fans but I would suggest waiting for a sale.

Don't get me wrong, it has some of the best graphics and sound design out there, and nails the look and feel of World War 2. It also plays pretty well, and can be enjoyed for an unextended amount of time, but in terms of the rest of it, there's nothing here.

Let's start off with the campaign. It's bad. I mean, what did you expect? The characters are boring and lifeless, and no amount of Hollywood actors is going to make me change my mind about that. Call of Duty just doesn't have good campaigns anymore. They pretty much stopped trying after the first Black Ops because I guess they realised that no one played the campaigns anymore. This one really proves that point, though, because in the multiplayer, they censored the Swastikas, and there are black and female soldiers running about, even on the side of the Nazis. Not that I'm opposed to diversity, but in a game selling itself on historical accuracy, that really puts a dent in the illusion. However, in the campaign, there are Swastikas everywhere, and no females in sight (minus one who plays a fairly minor role). Why do you think this is? Because no one plays the campaign. They could make it the most violent game ever, and no one would care. Besides that problem, the campaign never really has any twists or turns. It's just standard and pretty boring most of the time. I'm not gonna sit here and pretend to care about ANOTHER soldier who has family at home who we can all predict is gonna die.

The multiplayer isn't much of a step up, either. At first, I was kinda upset that they were continuing to make futuristic games with Infinite Warfare, but World War 2 has made me realise something. Going futuristic was the best thing that happened to Call of Duty. Both Advanced Warfare and Black Ops 3 are two of my favourites because the futuristic setting allowed for more variety. The double jumps and wall running in Advanced Warfare was the biggest change the series had made since the switch to a modern setting in CoD 4. Plus, this gave them the opportunity to have more weapon and ability variety. It needed refining, but it was a nice change of pace. Black Ops 3 was the perfect follow up because it did all of the refining that needed to be done in Advanced Warfare, and became what I would say is my favourite Call of Duty (even though the campaign didn't measure up to that of previous franchise entries). The only reason I hated Infinite Warfare was because it was just Black Ops 3 with worse maps and one of the series' worst campaigns. To say World War 2 has improved on this or evolved the series in any way is a joke because all they did was return to a style that everyone thought they wanted, but then realised they didn't. I always kind of knew that just going back to modern or historical settings wouldn't automatically fix Call of Duty, but I was hoping that it would provide some slight ounce of innovation. And it kinda did. The new War mode, which is the newest thing CoD has done since the jump kits in Advanced Warfare, is actually pretty neat. You're dropped into a linear map in which you and your team either have to complete an objective or drive the other team back from doing that. And while it's infinitely more fun to play the attacking team than it is to play defending, I still enjoyed my time with it. Other than that, though, there's nothing new or fresh about World War 2's multiplayer. If you've played a modern or historical CoD's multiplayer, you've played this one.

Lastly, there's the zombies, which has absolutely nothing new or interesting about it. It's just boring, honestly. So much so that I have absolutely nothing to say about it besides the fact that Ving Rhames is in it, so that's cool.

Overall, CoD WW2 is the furthest thing from a fresh gaming experience as you can possibly get. It's fun in short bursts and has some creative ideas, but none of them are ever executed to their full potential. 5/10.

Campaign only review: THE BEST COD SO FAR.
Return to past was a great move. In this interactive feel train movie I had so many awesome moments. I am more Black ops or Modern Warfare type of a gamer, but this World War II theme was processed amazingly.
..I don't care about nazi zombies.

Call Of Duty: WW|| is quite lacking when you start to get into the game and play more. The Multiplayer has little to no maps for the general player, Zombies is a rip off from Treyarch's and has no replay-ability after a weeks worth of playing.

I have played COD for 10 years, WW2 is definitely the worst COD i ever played! i don't even know were to start with all that is wrong with this game! Everything! if you like lag, camping, head-glitch, grenade spam, OP-snipers, and overall a glitch game that sometimes don't even work when you want to play, this is the game for you! Im going back to play older CODs.

I have no idea what they've done to the servers but for the past two weeks they no longer work. The lag is game breaking and completely destroys all the fun. It makes the game a frustrating mess. Nearly every game I play I see the enemy first, unload a full clip into them getting 10 hit markers while they kill with one bullet. Even playing with steady aim and firing from the hip doesn't work, as soon as you see an enemy -as you are pulling the trigger- you are dead. On the rare occasion you will beast but sadly knowing it's because everyone else is lagging. Sometimes it hilarious; like when I came up behind a camper facing the opposite direction, unleashed a series of bullets into his head only for him to suddenly teleport around and quick scope me. Sometimes you could cry - like the round I played and went 0.20 because not a single bullet from any weapon would register.

I switched back to IW and there I was, top of every game pulling high scores and low deaths. No other game I own lags like COD WW2. Battlefield runs perfect, Overwatch runs perfect, COD IW runs perfect, COD 4 remaster runs perfect yet WW2 is like playing on a 46k modem.

The social hub is still a ghost town which they haven't bothered to fix, but made sure they added COD Points to buy loot crates!

Maps are a mess, badly designed and boring. There's next to no content.

The war maps are actually pretty fun and for some bizarre reason don't lag anywhere near as much as the standard maps, but there's only 3 of them!

With the season pass you get a remastered map from COD2 which is insulting considering they didn't give enough maps with the main game, no doubt it was removed simply to entice people to buy the season pass.

Basically it doesn't work, we should all be refunded for paying for a product that is basically in alpha stage still.

Worst Cod in the history of cod. Avoid at all costs.

    ....................................................

    Update 06.01.18
Two months after launch I have deleted COD WW2. The servers are completely broken to a point where it is now impossible to play. Lag com, poor hit detection, teleportation and spawns are destroying any fun that could have been had. Every game is a constant frustration and doing well is not based on skill but if you have lag comp for or against you. It's beyond frustrating to shoot first, get 12 hit markers and die to see in your kill cam you haven't even fired a bullet. This is officially the worst COD in the entire history of COD. It's a cheap rushed bare bones mess.

In the campaign I have noticed a step forward for the next games of the saga (not extremely large but if remarkable) with the incorporation of point and click and some decision making. This can please people or otherwise but personally to me I liked it despite not having seen it before in a COD. The plot is quite simple but you always get to enjoy it and in some cases get fondness for certain characters. One of the things that I do not like in this way is the duration of the campaign that goes around 5 or 6 hours but if you are a normal player and even a normal rhythm you can reach 9 hours. The campaign lets you do a lot of things like driving and I think they use the concept of WWII very well note of the campaign 8

Regarding the Multiplayer I have already played about 15 hours and I can notice that it is quite addictive and the formula is to relay the same as always. That's why it's fun but the same again and again note the multi 8

With the zombies I have tried them and it seems easier than in previous ones and it is a fun fiente note 7

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is great, it is finally good to have a COD that does not run on walls, jump and hover or have any of the futuristic warfare in combat. I am a little sad as I am stationed in Japan and play on American servers on base and deal with a persistent lag, though I have noticed that it is worse than Black ops III. The sniper maps are amazing and remind me of Ghost even though this one is set during World War II. Being an actual Military member, I would have liked to see more emphasis on stealth, tactics and strategy as opposed to run and gun but I do understand that this is more of an arcade first person shooter than simulation. You are guaranteed to like it, which is why I actually give this game a 7.7, just under an 8 however, I believe my score will change once they hand over the first DLC and patches that fix the issues that I see happening on the game. For one thing, I have noticed how easy it is to team kill as your gun will lock on to a friend with ease and have difficulty locking onto the enemy. I have seen only a hand full of hackers and some will even tell you they are doing it which is my biggest issue as I do not believe in cheating. Anyways this is my first review but hopefully not the last. I am Ninjeye Expand

However, this year, we see a return to form for the series as it goes back to its "boots on the ground," World War II-era that helped define it as the gold standard for console first-person shooters. Once again, this title offers three main ways to play the game, offering a campaign mode, an online multiplayer component, and the co-op survival Nazi Zombies mode. Appropriately enough, each section will be reviewed separately, and finally summarized as one whole package.

History buffs will fall in love with what the campaign of WWII. The story follows American soldier Private Red Daniels and his journey with his platoon through the Western Front. For those hoping to see the war in the Pacific, I am sad to say that the campaign does not explore that aspect of the war. What is easily noticed is the feeling of the war that is captured quite well through the campaign, as the first mission has Daniels and crew storming the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. The gruesome nature of battle along with the horrific cries of falling soldiers paints a larger picture of the war altogether. The sound and graphical capabilities of WWII make it one of the best looking games of the year. Throughout the story, players will visit a variety of areas, including war-torn towns, German embassies, and snow-covered forests. The variety in location reminds players that progress is being made on the Western Front, and gives a breath of fresh air. The weapons look and sound how they do to their real life counterparts, clearly the developers did their homework on the weapons and equipment used during this time. This year, the campaign introduces squad abilities. Essentially, killing enemies translates into receiving health packs and ammunition from squad mates, providing a feeling of teamwork with AI companions. The story itself is where WWII falls short, however. Red Daniels and his squad are not the most interesting characters, and while the Axis Powers are certainly the enemies, there is no strong central villain for this more concentrated tale about a squad trying to survive the war. The campaign should take about six hours to complete, with replay value through discovering collectibles and attempting to beat the game on a higher difficulty.

Zombies mode returns and is as strong as ever. Titled "The Third Reich," players have to fend off multiple waves of the undead in an attempt to get the highest round count. Players that are strong at multitasking and working together will be drawn to this mode, and the addition of custom loadouts, objectives, and secrets to discover make the replay value for this mode very high. For those patient and skilled enough, there are many secrets to uncover around the map, as well as an easter egg to complete that has become a staple of the Call of Duty Zombies mode.

Finally, the multiplayer. Call of Duty is famous (or infamous to some) for its solid multiplayer gameplay. Even though the series returned to its roots, the developers at Sledgehammer Games made several changes to how this year's game is played. Create a Class is gone this year, and players now choose divisions to play. Divisions are essentially playstyles that help determine how one plays the game, with each having their own drawbacks and strengths. Choose the Airborne division to rush objectives or flank quickly around the enemy, or decide on the Armored division to set up at a location and hold down lanes. Divisions is an attempt to give more defined roles to players. Perks are replaced as well this year, with one basic training slot being chosen. Paired with a player's division, basic trainings provide a bit more variety to class customization. The loss of the perk system does hinder the experience a bit, though. While customization seems to be simpler, the basic training perks do not encourage a lot of experimentation, making more predictable customization. Gone are the days where players wait in lobbies until their next match begins with the introduction of Headquarters, a player hub where supply drops can be opened, orders can be undertaken, and players can engage in one-on-one combat (my personal favorite). These changes give players a stronger connection to their in game characters, and makes ranking up more meaningful. Supply drops also make a return, but the items earned do not impact in-game statistics of the weapons. Instead, all of the items are cosmetic or XP-based, which I am sure many fans of the series will be happy to hear about. The weakest part of the multiplayer is the map design. The game ships with a total of ten maps, but most of the maps feel unmemorable, at least for the good reasons. New players may find these maps difficult to navigate, as experienced players can position themselves in arguably unfair positions oftentimes.

Call of Duty: WWII is a strong addition to the series, and gives a lot of bang for one's buck. The return to the series roots is welcoming.

There is nothing special about WWII that separates it from previous iterations of the COD franchise. The story is sub-par and the online play is full of quick scoping snipers, and spawn camping boost lobbies. Of course you have the pay to play loot system for those that are into wasting their money. All in all not a bad game, but one that will quickly be forgotten.

Oh man, I have no idea how they messed this game up, but they did. Here are my biggest issues

Campaign: Remember when Call of Duty actually had good campaigns that could be considered a selling point? I'm talking about the Modern Warfare trilogy, World at War, Black Ops 1 and 2, etc. This campaign does not fall into this category. Daniels is a bad main character. The game spends a lot of time trying to make the player feel bad for him, but I simply don't know enough about him to feel any emotion towards him. There are some interesting new mechanics in the campaign, such as health that can only be replenished using medkits, and squad members being able to resupply, but the resupply mechanic needs work. The only reason I took stuff from them is because they would not shut up until I took it from them. I had to toss grenades randomly on purpose just so my squad member would stop screaming every five seconds that he had grenades ready. The opening level is very good, you get a good sense of the danger soldiers faced and how grim the battlefield is. Every level after this is nothing like level 1 and they just get boring after a while. I think this game could have benefited from a branching stories campaign like World at War, because fighting Germans exclusively gets old, especially knowing that WWII wasn't only fought between the U.S and Germany. Overall, the campaign is a waste of time.

Multiplayer: Awful. The game only came with 9 maps, which should be considered unacceptable. Headquarters is a waste of space. Call of Duty doesn't need a social hub and it only caused the game to crash or simply not work for about a month after release. The weapons are unbalanced. There is auto aim on the snipers and SMGs and shotguns are definitely overpowered compared to the assault rifles and LMGs. War mode is a joke. Given the run and gun style of COD multiplayer and the fast death times, how did they think an objective heavy mode like this would work? But the worst part is I'm writing this review more than a month after release and the game is still broken. Crashing is still a big issue, the supply drops you supposedly earn during games never appear in your inventory, and hit detection is still awful, and Sledgehammer has the nerve to push their first DLC pack while the game is still broken and they do nothing about it. A very bad experience.

Zombies: I don't have much to say about this, but it's not very good. I'm a big fan of Treyarch zombies, so I had high hopes, but it didn't deliver. The characters are boring and the map is one big boring circle. It's also too easy. The game's equivalent to Juggernog on steroids is available right from the start for a measly 500 jolts, This mode is nothing special.

This game alone has made me skeptical about buying future COD titles, but it has ensured that I'll never buy another product with Sledgehammer's name attached to it ever again.

I've had trouble connecting with friends, staying in lobbies, and I've seen different bugs in the headquarters. This has been the buggiest Cod I've ever played. Overall, I'd give it a 7.2. Expand

Really not sure what the negativity surrounding this title is - This is COD at it's heart and soul. With the quick-scoping, you can miss by 3 meters and still get an instant kill (if you aim and don't hit the head, you may not get a kill). This takes so much away from the multiplayer that just this issue requires me to award the multiplayer a complete failure. I know there are people that love this, but it is ridiculous.

My other annoyance is all complete stupid little things you get for kills and how fast they come. I have had games that I quit because we were owning the other team so bad that it you couldn't play the shooter. I have joined games where the team I was on was getting so wasted that I couldn't even leave spawn - kept getting hit by all the perk crap, before I even took one step.

After the last three games, I have decided I will no longer buy a copy of COD. Too bad you had to keep going downhill starting with MW3... (for those of you that thought the nuke was cool, really!?!?)

I think the maps aren't has fun as I would like but they're not terrible. So far the campaign is alright as well. The loading times between screens is horrible though.

The campaign was ok, not great but just ok. The ending was disappointing and the story itself actually sucked.
Multiplayer: WORST multiplayer ever! Nothing worst than having opposing players shooting through walls to kill you. Wooden walls sure, but when you run around a corner of a brick wall and you die, come on COD, I'm sure your developers can do a better job than this.
If you're looking for a WW1 or 2 style of game just go and buy Battlefield 1, I am not a fan of the Battlefield series but it blows this COD away.
Bought this game less than a week ago and will be trading it in for something else today.
COD WW2 is nothing but an attempt to copy other games but instead of making a step forward they took two steps back!!! Not sure if they hired new developers but this game is awful. Poor gameplay, poor graphics, crappy maps and whats with the headquarters? HQ is stupid.
DO NOT waste your money on this game, not sure why some people think its a great game, they all must be high on drugs?!?!?!
COD needs to get back to basics and come out with a game that reflects today's world struggles such as Afghanistan, Iraq, ISIS, etc.....Modern warfare was a great game.
Sorry for the bad review but this game is a waste of money!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed this game, especially in the context of the underwhelming COD games of the past few years. I have so far only played the single-player, although I have watched videos of people playing the MP and it looks fun- but I'll restrict my comments to the campaign.
First off, the campaign is largely back to basics and this, for me, is a good thing. Gimmicks like missions spent driving a tank or a plane are there, but kept to a minimum. In the main, missions are you and your platoon engaging in advancing towards and objective through waves of enemies with a few enjoyable stealth segments in the mix. This is what I want from a FPS game. I just want an enjoyable combat experience, no gimmicks, no clunky vehicle missions, just fun FPS action- and, in the main this is what COD WWII delivers. (Although there are still annoyingly clunky vehicle sections (but short ones at least)).

The story of the game was also quite enjoyable for me. I liked the characters, the weren't as 1 dimensional as other COD characters have been, I actually cared whether Zussman survives or not. Indeed the fact that your platoon members all have tangible roles and utility (i.e. one can give you health packs, another one gives ammo, another spots enemies) made it for once feel like in a FPS game I'm not winning the war all on my own.

I also thought that the graphics of the game were better than previous COD games, which I felt had produced largely 'same-old, same-old' graphics. This game looked more detailed and vibrant, for a change- although it could be argued that COD still lags behind other FPS games in this regard.

Turning to negatives, going back to my earlier point- there are still clunky gimmick missions- for example the driving the tank section where you're expected to drive a tank in FP perspective, whilst operating the gun and not getting stuck. The problem is that the vehicle controls are always clunky in games not centred around vehicles, thus sections spent flying planes or driving tanks just end up feeling frustrating and gimmicky. The mission where you deliver the briefcase, although arguably gimmicky as well, involved stealth elements which I found quite enjoyable in this game. Thus it was mainly the driving missions which irked me.

In this game sledgehammer have changed melee hits. In previous COD games (as far as I can recall) melee hits are one hit knife kills. In this game this is only true of stealth melee kills from behind, when you rush an enemy and melee attack you hit them with the butt of your gun, this only stuns enemies at full health. As someone who enjoys classic COD games, I personally want a game that stays true to the basic mechanics of those games. What made this COD enjoyable for me was that it was more similar to classic COD in some ways (i.e. returning to BOTG). However, changing the melee kills, and also removing health regen from campaign seemed pointless- if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I also found that there were some glitches in the campaign, particularly I found that heroic actions, where you drag a wounded teammate back to cover would often not resolve themselves when I got the person to the cover spot. By that I mean my character would not set the wounded teammate down when I got to the spot I was meant to get them to. Also I found that sometimes I would be desperately trying to get off of a turret and my character would not do so not matter what I did.

Finally, if you are going to include gimmicky driving missions, try to make the controls not absolutely unbearably clunky.

Overall, I enjoyed this game (the single-player, at least). It returned to a more classic COD formula- with missions that were standard COD-type missions, nothing crazily innovate but highly enjoyable for me. The world and characters were immersive, the story kept me relatively engaged, with only a few glitches and gimmicks putting a damper on an fun experience. I will almost certainly play this campaign again. In summary, if you enjoyed the campaigns of the previous BOTG COD games, then I'd say you'll enjoy this one. As for the MP, you'll have to read other reviews, because as I said at the start of this review I haven't played it yet.

    This game is doodoo.

I hate most of all, the fact that you get to pick what you look like going into a battle. In the last COD WW2 game, if you were on the side of the Japanese then you wore a Japanese uniform. Same goes for being on the American team, German, Russian and so on... Now, not only do you get to pick what uniform you wear, you also get to pick your gender and ethnicity.

For me, it takes away from the feelings of immersion to see a black female in a Wehrmacht uniform. Also, it makes it hard to tell friend from foe.

MULTI-PLAYER REVIEW ONLY: I also want to get it off my chest that shame on the developers for trying to erase history by censoring the swastika, the biggest Nazi symbol there is. Everybody knows what it is and what it represents but it's still a part of history and if you are going to make a WWII game, regardless, you should probably leave it in.

This game feels like a mistake. My bet is that Sledgehammer was going to make Advanced Warfare 2, and after Battlefield One's success and the fans hatred for COD in space, decided to scrap the work they had done on AW2 and rushed through this mess of a game. That's the best I can sum this up, as a rushed mess. I will disclose that I am a very big fan of Advanced Warfare, to date it's my favorite COD, I'm also a huge fan of Battlefield One, so grounded action is perfectly fine. This game cannot hold a candle to BF1, it's like comparing a Chevy to a Ferrari. HINT: Call of Duty is the Chevy.

Graphically, this game is definitely a step back, both myself and my wife commented on how much worse it looks, almost like a PS3 game. From the character models to the boring and generic maps, oh and small maps. But as any seasoned gamer knows, graphics aren't everything, so let's move on.

Sound: I typically give games of today a pass given the quality that exists with audio. gunfire is gunfire, bomb blast is bomb blast, nothing special, nothing spectacular. The sounds of burning humans is pretty comical though. The issue though is if you actually compare this game to Battlefield One, you can see the significant difference between the two companies and games, if you've never played BF1, then the audio is fine.

Game play: Well, it's not terrible, it's back to basics, but it's still just mindless run and gun. I read one "professional" review that stated it brought strategy back to the series, what?? No there is no strategy, it's just mindless run and gun, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Everything so far feels responsive, and though server matchmaking is an issue, when in game, it seems everything works fine. My biggest problem with COD, which has just gotten worse with WWII, is the quick scope sniping bull****. How do I know it's worse, let me tell you how, and you don't even need to watch the kill cams to see people completely missing people and getting kills. My wife, is terrible at video games, but she loves them, and tries to play them. One thing she could not do on any game, either COD or BF1, is snipe. Well, guess what, the sniper rifle is her favorite gun in WWII because of the lack of needing to be accurate. I've watched her, and I've watched the kill cam, it seems there is a hit box around the player, so that as long as your bullet lands within the box, it registers a hit. This is total garbage, and when the really good players figure this out, which they have, it makes some matches completely unplayable, the cannon map. There's no skill, you don't need to time shots, you just scope and pull trigger at the same time, dead. The game modes themselves look like all the same stuff, with the exception of War, but I can't comment on that because I haven't played that yet. There's not that many weapons and getting exotic weapons seems pointless because unless I'm missing something, they do not do anything to increase the stats of the actual weapon, just add like 10x exp or some Zombie kill perk thing. The class system is fine, no complaint there, just be careful when changing weapons, do not change weapon classes under a class, change the entire class. For example, if you have the shot gun class but want to use a machine gun, don't change the shotgun to a machine gun, you lose your incendiary rounds per, instead make a infantry load out.

Overall: I like it better than Black Ops III, which was returned to the store the next day, at least this one hasn't been returned. It's not nearly as fun as Advanced Warfare. If you want a really good shooter, pass this one up and get Battlefield 1. EA has to be laughing all the way to the bank, every time Activision releases a new COD game, it just makes their game look all the much better.

UPDATE: It's been returned to the store.

I really wanted CoD’s return to World War II to be something more than a solid game – but it’s not. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’ve already seen all this, that the developers (or perhaps the publisher) chose to create something as safe as possible. There’s just one campaign mission that surprised me with its scale, the rest is just a disappointing “best of Call of Duty”. The multiplayer is as good as usual, but it was infused with unnecessary systems resembling mobile titles, e.g spending in-game currency on pointless tasks of the “kill 100 enemies” variety. Missions that make you watch other players open their loot boxes are the pinnacle of absurdity. [13/2017, p.64]
