Call of Duty: WWII is exactly what you'd expect from a Call of Duty game. Big production values, bombastic set-pieces and all the shooty shooting you can stomach.

The story is decent and brilliantly acted, if a little one dimensional and lacking in any really interesting twists and turns. So, yeah... it's a call of Duty game where you get to shoot Nazis. Nothing groundbreaking but a fun romp while it lasts.

*I don't care about multiplayer so I can't tell you if that is any good or not.

    The campaign.
I was just expecting your average run-of-the-mill cod campaign when I decided to download this game when I saw it on PS+ earlier this year but my goodness, it was amazing. it starts off with a dark but beautiful recreation of the Omaha beach landings on D-Day, they spared no expense in showcasing a huge map filled with dug out trenches, broken barricades and thousands of soldiers along with it. just playing that first 45-minute long mission grabs you right into the experience. the game puts a large emphasis onto teamwork and tactics. you can call on the NPCs around you to give you callouts, extra ammunition and grenades or med packs, removing the standard automatic healing system that is commonplace in most games.

    The multiplayer

now I don't usually play multiplayer but one of my favourite parts of this game is the war mode, it is a 18-18 game mode where one team has to complete objectives and another has to stop the other team from completing the objectives, these can be anything from securing intel and moving tanks across a snowy forest to a recreation of the D-Day landings and building a bridge, these are hectic, extreme and fun. I cannot tell you how many hours I have put into this game mode. it is truly amazing

in the end, I don't think this is amazing and there are many downfalls but taking that away leaves a good and fun game.

Stop listening to the corrupt, fake, paid-off reviews. This game is not worth buying. The story is boring and forgettable. The multiplayer is repetitive, boring and has some of the worst cut scene animations which look like they belong in a PS1 era game.

I think back to playing Call of Duty: Ghosts a few years into the current generation and thinking about how awful it looks next to PS4 exclusives like Uncharted 4. Now we have a Call of Duty that finally looks, feels, and sounds like a current gen game. Activision stopped counting money and finally made a great game.

Let's gloss over the multiplayer. It is the classic boots on the ground game that fans have been supposedly clamoring for since Call of Duty added cyborgs and exoskeletons. As an old school gamer, I love it. Jumping into a match was as disorienting as ever for a new player yet I the shooting and killing is the same. I love that I can pick up great weapons off the corpses of higher level players. I think an equal start mode would be better, liked fixed classes in Team Fortress and Overnight. Overall, I love the old school World War 2 action and finding a match was incredibly easy. There is also a zombie mode for co-op lovers. No one says that Call of Duty is not the complete package, unless they are talking about CoD:BlOpsIIII because that game did not have a single player campaign.

The single player campaign in in CoD:WWII is the best I've played in a Call of Duty game since CoD 4: Modern Warfare back in in the 00s. The campaign is so good, it rivals the campaigns in great single player only games. Although the game is focused on the grim reality of World War 2, the developers added a lot of fun elements like sniping levels, a little tank action, and some light air combat. The tank inspired level was all the more amazing with the destructible environment and the great audio. You can hear the crunch as you drive over piles of bricks. Why doesn't Activision make an entire game like this, and I don't mean the pay-to-win World of Tanks? The air combat section was a bit kindergarten (no pun intended) but still looked and sounded great. If the ACE Combat series looked this good, I would buy into it. The stealth missions will hold your hand, as usual, to a certain extent, and letting the game proceed after failing with stealth is new. In many ways, CoD:WWII felt like a mashup of World War 2 game classics minus Castle Wolfenstein. (Wouldn't a Call of Duty version of the Great Escape be bonkers? I suppose it was done in CoD:BlOps but then again, when has Activision every refrained from repeating itself?)

The health system in WWII is a bit iffy. Rather than crouching under cover to regain health, the player character uses health packs. Sometimes a buddy will toss you a health pack and sometimes you find them laying around in the forest. I see this as a side-grade of the usual health system that Call of Duty borrowed from Halo: Combat Evolved. What the game really needs is a true a.i. system that does not have every gun trained with 100% accuracy on the player character.

The NPCs will shout "Daniels" a few times a minute. If you are named Daniels, then you will love this game. Or you might hate it. The developers are pushing toward immersion and they succeed halfway because the barks from the NPCs are too constant and the game still has to throw up on-screen directions. The levels are also designed to be idiot proof. The player area is in most cases quite narrow and serve to funnel players back onto the set path. The game does not reward curiosity, even if there are 33 mementos to collect.

The story is the real star of the campaign. The character detail and voice acting help to sell it. World War 2 aficionados will know the context of the battles, even if the details do not all seem authentic. The human story, however, is told well, and I do not envy the men who endured all those months of fighting from D-Day to crossing the Rhine.

Full disclosure: I bought this game for $5 used from Gamestop. Then PlayStation released the game for free a month later. Activision did get some of my money out of this (and they deserve it), but I think Activision's ultimate goal was to have more players to buy additional content on-line This is silly in for any historical game as the appeal of the game is the historical accuracy. If Activision focuses on making good games, people will buy them.

Got it from PS Plus. Never ever finished it. Gameplay is boring as hell and feels like a remastered Call of Duty 2 from the early 2000. Which is not a bad thing, if the game was published at least 10 years ago. The stealth missions are a disgrace. Nothing like from CoD4. Plot is chaotic as well. And I am so tired that Americans won everything and not only in WW2. Pathetic.

Great cut-scenes, with a decent story and great voice acting. The multiplayer is also pretty good, though it is lacking in game modes, and maps, but more than makes up for in customization. There are so many weapons in this game, it almost borders on absurd. Some of the guns are just worthless, and have no place, but with the huge selection too choose from you are left with countless possibilities for crafting your own play style. The only real let down on this game is the zombies. It feels slow, somewhat boring, the enemies present little too no challenge, and the only map you get too play, feels very convoluted and drawn out. It takes way too long to finish a match, and I've only found myself actually playing it a handful of times. If you like the older Call of Duty games, and have been pining for some kind of sequel too World at War, this is the closest you're gonna get. Don't let the outrage mob try too convince you this isn't a good game, it's just different from what most people are used too. Expand

The graphics are decent, the plot is very simple yet manages to keep one entertained, the campaign length is enough for 5-6 eves of intensive gameplay. What else do ya`ll want from a shooter? You run and you shoot, as simple as that. Yes, the dialogues in this game are dull and full of washed out cliches, but it`s not a first FPS to abuse that and definitely not the last. COD WW2 also has a number of gameplay shortcomings that get quite annoying after several hours of playing, like indistructible tables or other seemingly fragile objects that absorb RPG shots and leave enemies untouched, or crazy damage the nazis do on high level of difficulty resulting in frequent one-shots. Also, the friendly NPC`s are often annoying as they constantly run in front of you making it more difficult to aim at the enemies.
But generally, I liked the dynamics of the game, I loved the missions where you operate a tank or a plane, the shooting itself feels pretty good, and the whole COD WW2 just feels like a solid game to spend a few eves with.

    The Zombies:

I am gonna get some hate for saying this, but... I actually really liked the zombies. I prefer BO3 over this but still they're pretty competent. I had a great time trying to beat The Third Reich's storyline with some friends. It surely provided me with some great time during the 2 or 3 weeks it took. I would recommend trying to solve its story without looking up a guide, makes it more fun. (9/10)

1 - The campaign is not that fun. It would be nice to have the Eastern front, for example, like in COD World at War.

My friends and I have spent numerous hours playing several “Call of Duty” games (notably the “Black Ops” sub-series) in local multiplayer (mostly through fighting bots and taking on Zombies), and I’ve had some fun playing those games, since I enjoy some local cooperative multiplayer with friends, but “Call of Duty” is in a weird boat where I feel it's simultaneously the most underrated and overrated game franchise out now. Underrated in that the games are relatively fun in short bursts, and perhaps not as bad as the internet might lead you to believe, but overrated in that they aren’t nearly as good as their blockbuster sales might lead you to believe. “Call of Duty” is not one of the greatest franchises in gaming, it’s simply one of the most persistent, as it continues to receive yearly installments that sell like hotcakes in spite of their general averageness. And while 2017’s “Call of Duty: WWII” was a hyped entry when it was announced for returning to the boots-on-ground gameplay style after so many futuristic entries, this entry honestly epitomizes the “averageness” that has rendered the series unexciting.
“Call of Duty: WWII,” presentation-wise, does things pretty solidly: of course, the game is graphically impressive, just as any number of Activision games are, and gameplay-wise, it's at the very least functional. It’s fast-paced, the controls are fluid, and the gunplay is competent stuff. Beyond the campaign, this is another “Call of Duty” game that I’ve played with friends (as I mentioned, mostly against bots because that’s what we like), and it is occasionally pretty fun. This is a very minor thing, but I never got to mention this when I reviewed “Battlefield 1,” which I’m using just for the sake of comparison, but one thing I found so fun in that game was being able to use a shovel as a weapon, just because it was so jarring yet gratifying. “Call of Duty: WWII” does also allow you to use a shovel, which…I’m sorry, I know it’s really minor, but I just get a kick out of it.
The reason I had to mention something that minor, though, is because I'm really reaching to find something positive to say about this game. I had some big issues with it, but the biggest, most glaring one is this: if you've played one “Call of Duty” game, you’ve played them all, and this entry hits that nail on the head. There’s nothing exciting about the gameplay here, it’s competently made but severely lacking in anything that captivating. Beyond the lack of standout gameplay elements (well, outside of vehicle sections that stand out for the WORST reasons), the campaign is unbelievably short and painfully unfulfilling. Much of the story is a mishmash of clichés with forgettable characters, and the game is so cinematic that it feels like most of the game’s length is spent watching. I know I mentioned in my review of “Battlefield 1” that it too had a campaign that felt short and occasionally had too much watching, but “Call of Duty: WWII” takes those flaws and turns them up to eleven. And the difference here is that “Battlefield 1” actually had a good game to go along with it, but with “Call of Duty: WWII,” I mean, I just beat the remaster of “Modern Warfare 2” about a month ago and I feel like I’m playing that exact same game here. By the way, I know I’m hanging around the “Battlefield 1” comparison a lot in this review, and I don’t want this to feel like a compare-and-contrast piece because a game should be judged on its own, but frankly, I feel the comparison is worth bringing up because I refuse to believe that “Call of Duty: WWII” would exist had the fanbase not caused such a stink about “Infinite Warfare” a year prior, and then EA not hit it so big with the announcement and trailer for “Battlefield 1” not long after. This game feels like it was conceptualized and created only to ride on the coattails of “Battlefield 1,” and frankly, to me, it often just feels like a rip-off of it.
I really have to hand it to the “Call of Duty” series, because it is just extremely good at diluting and watering down the entire FPS genre for the biggest audience possible, most specifically casual gamers who don’t play enough video games to understand why the franchise is not nearly on the level of creativity as the many games it finds itself so eager to copy off of And that is precisely the case with “Call of Duty: WWII,” which has its moments of fun, but continues to carry a “been there, done that” vibe. It’s the same game you’ve played for years, and it remains a very safe, stale, lowest common denominator shooter that I can’t help but feel simply indifferent towards.
    Final rating: 5 out of 10 “Hmm…”

I played this on a PS4 Pro with SSD and I can say there were no framedrops, bluescreens, bugs or long loading times. The game engine provides an intense and brilliant game feeling even facial animations are top notch in this one. Weapons lack a little bit and some weapon handling could be improved. The campaign progresses throughout 12 missions that will take you busy for around 7hrs. Gameplay is covered by quick time events (which are imho more frustrating then useful) and very well made cutscenes.

The world is fittingly dark but the developers were able to bring in diversity with different characters, emotional bonds and nice locations you have to visit not forgetting what it means to be out on the battlefield.

Afterall if you buy it only for the campaign it might be a bit pricey but once again this campaign proves to be very worthy in my opinion.

It also for a WW2 isn't that historically accurate. If you're sensitive to some games being too PC, stay the hell away because they don't even have the enemies wear the Nazi uniforms. This game could've been Activision's chance to give us a gritty but over the top experience and it just fell flat.

The combat is more of the same as COD has been for the past 10+ years. If you love it, you'll love it but it feels too arcadey. The AI is braindead most of the time and it just doesn't have a sort of impact I'd prefer.

Not a horrible FPS and you could do worse but if you like historically accurate WW2 games, this isn't for you. If you wanted COD to maybe feel a bit less arcadey and have better AI, this won't do it. The only ones I can really recommend this to are die-hard fans of the series.

COD really needs to find a way to reinvent itself because it's very stale and this proves just how stale it has become.

I must say i was not very impressed and quite disappointed. This game is basically everything we have come to expect in modern generic first person shooters. The game is amazing looking however and the graphics are top notch. The shading, the environments and lighting are all great. The sound of basically everything as well is great. The base game-play at its core is very well polished. The shooting feels perfect and movement is smooth. The campaign has some likable characters but the story is so generic and short making investment useless. Its well acted and sometimes actually well written but its so predictable and the everything feels so forced in so it can be condensed into a few hours. The game-play is standard corridor shooting and can get very old but the squad dynamic and having teammates supply you with health and ammo adds much needed depth. The vehicle sections feel under utilized and out of place. The game does switch it up sometimes and has some very cool moments but overall very average. The multiplayer however is a disaster. The maps are super small and force you into the same approach every time. They all feel very similar and generic. The weapons are good however and pretty diverse and feel good to use. Customization is lacking with certain divisions locking off certain things. Score streaks feel very unrewarding and useless and make the multiplayer feel very empty. The hub area has some cool things like playing old Activision games and one versus one duels. Mostly its a glorified loot box show room though. The cosmetic loot system is so lazy and broken that items are literally reused with different names. The cosmetics do not fit with the WWII setting and break any possible immersion. Zombies has some cool horror aspects and a cool atmosphere but the positives end there. The map is convoluted and annoying to navigate. Enemy variation is lacking and many things are made to complicated like the horrible perk system and power ups. Overall a very underwhelming experience. Expand

i really wanted to like this game i wanted to grind to max rank nut this is probably the worst launch in call of duty history and the microtransactions are disrespectful to people who fought in WWII and the veterans who are still alive today.

To be honest, it has it's fun moments, but that can be said for any Call of Duty game. I have never felt so board and upset to a Call of Duty game and this one made the list. The multiplayer is just awful, maps are a three lane system that keeps getting repeated, lackluster customization to classes, supply drops that give you nothing but trash, and hardly any fun game modes. The campaign is really good and is the only saving grace for this game, but it fell into a hole of trying to play it safe and have a World War 2 generic story. Zombies I thought would be fun, but I was wrong. It's just so bad I only played one map and didn't even bother with the other maps because it felt boring and stale whiten a few matches and it's even more disappointing when this gamemode is not meant for solo players and made more for co-op. 2/10 a Call of Duty you shouldn't waste your money on because it's boring and you don't get your money's worth out of it. Call of Duty goes back to its World War 2 roots. A return to form that will be welcomed by anyone tired of wall running and jet packs. This back-to-basics approach is comfortable as an old shoe, but the new additions are hit-or-miss and the lack of risks taken won't do anything to win back those who found the series to have gotten stale some time ago.

    The campaign:
Sledgehammer Games shows once again that they're almost as good at telling stories as the team at Treyarch. With the exception of the protagonist (whose voice actor has some trouble maintaining his southern accent), I actually cared about the characters. I wasn't a big fan of the gameplay changes though. The removal of recharging health for a limited bar that you need to keep an eye on is at odds with the chaotic nature of the action where bullets come at you from every direction. The new squad system where your AI teammates can resupply you with ammo and first aid kits is interesting, but not fleshed out enough to have any real impact. While I was invested in the story actually playing through it wasn't something I enjoyed all that much.

    Zombies:
I think WWII actually has one of the best iterations of the fan favorite cooperative mode. The new tone and setting are really creepy giving it a distinct vibe. All of the abilities, power-ups, and single use skills will be easier for newcomers to wrap their heads around than they were in Black Ops 3. While this change may not sit well with some, I love the addition of regularly updated goals for the sense of direction they give. Of course playing with randoms isn't ideal. Especially if you or they don't have a mic. This is still a mode that is at its strongest with friends.

    Multiplayer:
The biggest portion of the package and the thing that's kept this franchise alive. It's where you'll feel the effects of the return to boots-on-the-ground style gameplay the most. With the removal of all the movement systems introduced over the years as the series pushed further and further into the future this really does feel like playing old school CoD. The new War mode can be quite a bit of fun with each map offering different objectives for teams to complete in order to win the match. It adds some nice variety, but can be a little unbalanced at times with certain objectives giving one side a clear advantage over the other. The Hub is kind of an odd addition. Giving you a place to interact with other players. It has its amusements, but for the most part I never used it.

The loot box system is understandably controversial as it has led to the inclusion of microtransactions. They are totally frivolous though as all they offer are cosmetic options. They're given out at random and you can earn them by completing "contracts" that require you to complete certain challenges. You can even get specific things you want with the easy to amass in-game currency by going to the Hub. So you'll never feel pressured to spend any money on them. Personally, I kind of like them as they mean I don't have to hit some crazy goal just to get a stupid charm or skin for my guns.

Newcomers and longtime fans alike are going to face a bit of a learning curve when it comes to navigating WWII's confusing mess of menus. I don't know why Sledgehammer decided to ditch the sleak, easy to figure out layout of previous CoD titles, but it wasn't a smart move. Its the kind of thing that helped put Medal of Honor: Warfighter in a very early grave and has kept me from ever sticking with a Battlefield game for too long. I also encountered a startling amount of disconnects from matches. The stability is quite questionable given the meaty update sizes.

    Technical:
Patch sizes are something Sledgehammer really needs to work on. I've been able to get every update put out for all of both Treyarch's and Infinity Ward's entries in the series over the years without ever having to worry about whether or not I had enough space for them. Here though I had to clear out a nice chunk of memory to make room. This was in issue for Advanced Warfare as well and I abandoned that game because of it.

    Conclusion:
If you've wanted to see the series return to a more grounded style of play that's free of laser beams and robots then this is the CoD for you. Sledgehammer has tried to add some defining changes to the mix with varying degrees of success. Overall though this is another solid addition to the franchise and a sign that perhaps we haven't seen everything this conflict has to offer.

Ive put it a lot of hours on the Multiplayer in this game. Probably way too many. It has so much potential, but every time there's a thread of fun, they wrap it layers of frustration.

And now youre going to give me Contracts to get X kills in X amount of time on Domination, but i cant ever CHOOSE Domination anymore, so i just have to pray that everyone happens to vote for Domination,

No. Im done being tortured by these programmers.

Ive never felt so much hatred for human beings as the people who made decisions like that.

There weren't many maps at the start but that meant that players could completely master their technique and strategy in order to bend the combat to their will. My favorite game mode was easily Hardcore Dom and after reaching master prestige, I still can't get enough of that game mode. The zombies mode felt fresh, too. The easter eggs, mechanics, and story were exciting to spend time with and although it's exactly what you'd expect the zombies mode to be like, I still thoroughly enjoyed it as somebody who never felt interested in playing it at all. And, the campaign. Meh. It was "fine." The story, gameplay, level design, characters, all acceptable with no real emotion or excitement at all. All in all, a lot of fun but the lack of true creative genius makes this a hard recommendation. This is more of a guilty pleasure than anything else. Expand

The updates are too much and too many. Changes are ridiculous. The action was fine and now they keep adding stuff that don't make sense and are making the game not interesting at all. They took the game Gridiron away as a challenge and combined it with others. Sucks big time! Games are changing as you play. Very poor entertainment.

The multiplayer has some cool ideas like the HQ and the new division system but the maps, score-streaks, and mostly everything feels very meh. The campaign was a joke, but the multiplayer of WWII was a solid throwback to earlier Call of Dutys, and I never got tired of it. The orders and supply drops may be seen as a cash grab by some people, but they kept me coming back to the game over and over. One of the better Call of Duty games in a while.

Call of Duty WWII has an amazing campaign, but it isn't enough to save it from being one of the weaker entries in the series. The online play is disengaging and tarnished by easily forgettable maps and the zombies mode is incredibly lacklustre in comparison to the main Black Ops series entries.

I really wanted CoD’s return to World War II to be something more than a solid game – but it’s not. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’ve already seen all this, that the developers (or perhaps the publisher) chose to create something as safe as possible. There’s just one campaign mission that surprised me with its scale, the rest is just a disappointing “best of Call of Duty”. The multiplayer is as good as usual, but it was infused with unnecessary systems resembling mobile titles, e.g spending in-game currency on pointless tasks of the “kill 100 enemies” variety. Missions that make you watch other players open their loot boxes are the pinnacle of absurdity. [13/2017, p.64]
