There is so little content in this game that I'm shocked that the whole game is over 100 gigabytes; and it's not even on the disc, there are only 100 megabytes on it. You basically just bought the DRM on a disc and have to download the rest of the game via download patch. Expand

UPDATE: Blitzed with micro transactions and terrible progression. They ruined a great product.
While Blackout is good, I am in love with the MP. It is so buttery smooth, and we finally have some deviation from the 3 lane map formula that started to drive me insane in the later CODs. Heist and Control are two excellent new game types which keep it fresh as well. Its not perfect, but it's finally done something to make itself different from previous titles. A lot of the reviews mention the lack of campaign, I will get far more value out of Blackout than I would have from a campaign, so I see it as a fair trade.

There are still hit detection and latency issues with Treyarch releases you dont see in other CoD games.

Treyarch still has the best gun play but the new ttk plus the bad hit detection ruins what could have been a positive.

Instead of being the usual highlight of the franchise, Black Ops 4 is not only forgettable, but unfocused and a step back for the series.

If you MUST buy it, wait a week, There will be piles of "used" copies everywhere......

Bl Ops 4 might end up being more forgettable the CoD "Ghosts" It feels like a soulless cash grab.

Itll be the first CoD since before Modern Warfare, that i dont keep on my shelf forever.

There are too many better games to spend your hard earned money on.

But I can't find myself playing this game, like ever. From the beginning, zombies had so much promised DAY 1 content that took months to make it into the game, and some is still not even in. Firstly, zombies was going to get factions and callings which were supposed to be interesting incentives to play daily. Where as WW2's callings gave exclusive rewards and even special weapon variants, bo4's system offers xp. Sad. Especially because they came in 5 months after they were supposed to be. Zombies is still missing a free map (nuketown) and a mode (grief). Both of which were talked about arriving in January I believe? And finally, zombies was in beta for 2 or 3 months. Crashes everytime you got close to round 20, sometimes earlier if you were in a party. Black ops 4 was supposed to have the most competitive multiplayer as well with the higher health and smaller teams. Too bad ranked play was also 5 months late killing off any chance this game had of actually being competitive. A big trend you'll notice is that all content is coming out way too late.

Except for the battlepass cause that brings money into activision's pockets . So a full price AAA game + the very expensive season pass doesn't even get you everything? Theres still cosmetics that go for 20ish dollars? The game really has the worst and most aggressive microtransactions I've ever seen, but add in the fact that its a AAA game that launched completely broken and unfinished.

There is far less customization than any other entry in the series, the maps are literally copy and paste from previous Black Ops games, the time to kill is far too high, there is no team balancing, and the "storyline" (called Specialist HQ) is just a series of offline game modes set against bots, they didn't even try to make it interesting. In other words, this is a p*ss-poor excuse for a video game, much less a serious entry in the Call of Duty franchise. So, if I were you, I would hold off on this one, maybe stick with Black Ops 3 or, perhaps, just stay away from the CoD franchise either until it can get it's sh*t straight, or until it comes to a close. Blackout is my first battle royale and although I like how this one plays, it is plagued with cancerous players that sissy-camp every single building with a shotgun. It gets very boring for someone that is not interested in the Royale genre.

The DLC/Microtransactions have been the worst I have ever seen, literally emulating the fortnite system.

There are no ways to attain weapons you have missed from previous seasons (SWAT RFT)
and they milk every penny from you - I don't know why because they cut the meat from the game - CAMPAIGN mode.

This does not deserve the black ops title either. Nothing here is black ops. It is siege/fortnite/overwatch.

If you buy this unfinished alpha, you say to activision that you give them permission to remove story mode from all games.

Imagine if spyro reignited came out later - it'd be a battle royale without any story.

The developers clearly want to innovate where innovation isn't needed, and add features that appear lackluster and like quick cash-grabs.

First of all, let's bring up the elephant in the room: the replacement of a campaign with a battle royale mode. This is certainly a hot topic, and one that not many are in favor of. This came as a disappointment to me, because while I love myself a good multiplayer shooter from time to time (Overwatch, Titanfall 2), my heart will always belong to single player experiences. Some may be fans of Battle Royale games, but here's the kicker:

Battle royale takes almost no time to develop. After Epic Games realized that Fortnite: Save The World was a sinking ship, they threw together a battle royale mode in 2 months. 2 MONTHS. This combined with the fact that Blackout already incorporates assets from previous games in the franchise makes me wonder: Why did this take up SO MUCH development time that the campaign was scrapped?

Of course, this would have been excusable had Blackout been refreshing to play. After 5 or so matches, you have done everything that the game has to offer. This is what plagues battle royale games, the repetitiveness and lack of replayability.

Onto the multiplayer, which, in my opinion, is some of the worst the series has to offer.

Map design is a flop this time around, with the same boring, three-lane maps that we have seen since modern warfare. Not only do all of these maps play the same, too many of them are blatantly copy-pasted from other games. A majority of them feel as if they were designed for advanced movement, but sometime in the development cycle, the developers realized their mistake, removed the jetpacks, and the maps were left to suffer.

The overwhelming majority of the guns are all samey as well, both from an audio and visual standpoint. Now, I understand that the series must have similar weapons that are consistent between entries, but there could have been more effort to inject some creativity into the designs of the weapons. Like them or not, advanced warfare and infinite warfare had some of the most creative weapons in the series, because the futuristic setting gave them more creative freedom.

The hero-shooter esque class system is also a miss, because it forces COD in the direction of a hero-shooter, but doesn't do so fully, and we are left with a half-baked experience that feels generally unpolished and unbalanced. Why do ability cooldowns not reset to zero when changing rounds? Why are there almost no supportive roles? Why is teamwork not a large enough factor in fights? Why are there no ability interactions/combinations? Why do all of the characters look the same, not allowing you judge how to approach each fight? Why is the Time to kill too high for a hero-shooter, but too low for a Call of Duty game? These were just some of the questions that I had to ask myself as I played, and i'm sure you will ask these questions as well.

The zombies, as expected, is a great addition. It meets, if not exceeds the footprint that BO3 left behind. There are just the right amount of easter eggs, lore, and character interactions that add up to a pleasant experience that will be dug into and expanded upon as the next year progresses. And, 3 maps at launch is just the icing on the cake, it's the cherry on top.

Next up: the monetization. The Black ops Pass is inexcusable, especially since we are in an era when consumers are as educated as we will ever be about the impact that companies such as EA and Activision are putting on the gaming industry.

Having convenient spending options for your consumers will never be a bad thing, and Activision has overwhelmingly demonstrated this with the Black ops Pass. DLC has always been a feature in COD, and it has been passable up until this point. With the black ops pass, it's all or nothing, either you're in, or you're out. You can either shell out 50 dollars, or you get virtually no content on the side. This begs a couple of questions:

Why couldn't we have had smaller, yet individual DLCs, priced at 3.99 to 9.99, for each map pack/zombies map/weapon bundle?
Why does Activision constantly screw over their consumer base?

    A few other, minor complaints:
-UI is bland, and the cursor on PS4 is unnecessary
    -Same overall artstyle/engine as BO3
-Lack of classes/characters compared to other hero-shooters

Overall, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is another entry in the COD franchise, though its designers want it to be everything but, including Fortnite, CS:GO, Overwatch, and Rainbow 6: Seige. It ends up being a jack of all trades, and master of none, if you will.

    MP- 1
    Blackout- 2
    Zombies- 8
    Monetization- 0

    Overall rating- 2/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the first CoD title I have purchased in at least five years and likely the last unless major improvements are made as there are a few elements in each mode which make them very frustrating to play. I primarily purchased this due to the Blackout mode so I will start there.

In blackout you have only one life and a single fight can negate 20+ minutes worth of work and game play, this is the essence of any battle royale mode. The major issue with this mode is that they have not made the necessary adjustments to the equipment as it play extremely different than the normal multiplayer mode. The main culprit in this is the 9 bang grenade. If you are hit with one of these you are completely blind for multiple seconds. This works great in a game mode where you die and just respawn seconds later but a single item with a large area of effect that can essentially ensure your death has absolutely no place in a battle royale genre.

Next we have multiplayer which, if you like regular CoD multiplayer, it may be okay for many players. The issue I have here is that sniper rifle, which are easier to hit with than in many other shooters, are an instant kill regardless of where you hit someone. In a game where the maps were all oddly designed to have many large hallways it leaves little room for other play styles and creates a frustrating gaming experience. Additionally, there is rampant hacking on the PC. It is not fun for anyone, except maybe the hacker, when an enemy is continuously jumping through the doorway, doing an instant 180 to an enemy player and landing 4 quick head shots before the player with the positional advantage can even react.

The saving grace of this game for me is the Zombies mode but it does not come without its own issues. I love the idea that there are objectives available for each map to advance the story within each round and that getting through the entire story would take a mix of practice, memorization, and good gun play. The part that kind of ruins it, at least on the map I have had the time to delve into fairly deeply, is the addition of RNG and cheap mechanics to try and artificially increase the difficulty. I am referencing the finding the skull objective on IX. Why would you make an objective where, even if you know where the item you need can spawn and you are looking directly at it, the item is so difficult to see that you can still possibly miss it? This portion does not feel rewarding and just feels like a cheap way to "increase the difficulty" without actually putting any work into it. Everything else outside of that which I have experienced on that map feels difficult but doable but that is too much luck put into a task when you need to be nearly perfect to get through all the objectives, at least in two players.

All in all there is a lot of room for improvement in all aspects of this game and I completely regret purchasing this game in its current state. Here is to hoping the developers listen to community feedback and improve this game so it is at least and enjoyable gaming experience for the majority.

I played about 2 hours of it and had to switch it off and put AC: Odyssey back on, BO4 was that bad. I then didn't play it again for about 2 weeks, and when I did finally play it again, I couldn't bare more than a couple of hours. I just get sick of it, and hate practically every aspect of what it has evolved into. It's like all the previous bad COD's rolled into one, except they've tried to copy fortnight into it.

The graphics, the combat, the playing styles and gameplay, the glitches, the lack of a campaign etc. They have even ruined Zombies, which used to be COD's only saving grace, up until the past couple, which have been getting progressively worse. Zombies is now ridiculous, with too many far fetched spells and complex procedures that make it too overcomplicated to be worthwhile. It just feels like a big mess.

Save your money. Unless you are a massive fortnight fan, I suppose.

The scorestreaks are overpowered along with the rest of the technology in this game, there is no way to counter them the rocket launcher take too long to destroy them and there is not type of EMP system in the game to counter. Cold-Blooded perk has been nerfed to an extreme to the point where scorestreaks will still see and shoot you it'll just take longer for them to. At least make a specialist that is like an anti-technology person who can get past that stuff. The counter to everything in this game is to just shoot it like the barricade when can't there be like a self-destruct button on the back or something to destroy it faster. It makes zero sense it's like either waste time shooting the tech and lose the game or keep dying by them and lose the game. I was a huge fan of Call of Duty thanks to their single player campaign. "Now it is their land... Their people... Their blood." Remember?
BlackOps4 doesn't have a single player campaign. This is disappointing.

Just to be clear, I'm a big COD fan and had high hopes for the game.
    Multiplayer Mode:

All of the matches end in one team 'duck-shooting' the enemy team players after a minute or so. I'm not saying it only because I was loosing, it worked both ways; I could not fire a single bullet and my team would win the game. There is nothing the losing team can do once an enemy team gets a battleship or attack helicopter killstreak. I'm going back to Black Ops 3 multiplayer.
    Zombie Mode:
Zombies are ok. You have new monsters, elixirs, perks etc. You can kill some time with it, but zombies with each iteration of the franchise lose the appeal to me. Maps are so big and puzzles so difficult, that they stop being fun at all. Just treacherous and tedious shooting and running around the giant map. I wish they would go back to relatively small and really perfected maps like in Black Ops 2, were killing the hordes of zombies was really fun.
    Blackout Mode:
You will be better served by other games at fraction of the price.

I'm incredibly disappointed, but not for the reasons you'd expect.

Micro-transactions are w/e, they're all cosmetic and there's no paywall for content. That's good.

The detail and graphical potential this title has lives up to the CoD name. That's good.

Zombies mode is kinda fun if wave-based defense is your thing. That's good.

Battle Royale mode is fun and sees decent updates. That's good.

Multiplayer has NO skill based matchmaking and is a smoking hot mess. What the actual ****
How does Activision expect to entice new players into their IP when the MAJOR SELLING POINT, the multiplayer, is so unbalanced for new players the experience isn't even fun? In my first 5-10 matches online, I was the ONLY player not prestiged and under level 30 (to be precise, I was LEVEL ONE.) That means I have no create-a-class, no experience with any weapons, no experience with any of the maps, and no experience with game mechanics other than how to point and shoot my **** gun (WITH NO USEFUL ATTACHMENTS).

Spawns are still broken, a remnant of distress from my MW2 days, where you undoubtedly will be killed not because of your skill level, but because the game spawned you with an enemy within 10ft.

I'm not sure if this is a valid complaint, but from my memory I seem to recall there being a larger assortment of weapons to choose from in previous entries, from what I can tell each type of weapon has about four unlocks and only around 4-5 types of gun per primary and secondary.

As a side note, Activision needs to start taking into account the wide base of players they have. In their demographic exists a wide variety of player types, and many of them play every CoD game they release. When you pair these incredibly skilled players with the less experienced players that don't play as often, you just end up alienating a large portion of potential customers. I don't buy CoD games frequently because every time I do, my playing experience seems to be secondary to the Activision "Whales" and it's clear that Activision puts no protections in place to ensure that new players will have fun.

If you're playinh a competitive game, you want to play with competitors at your skill level. High Schoolers don't play NFL teams. My first Black Ops 4 match shouldn't be against CoD Veterans.

I normally do really well in multiplayer even sometimes winning up to several games at a time but since purchasing this game i have yet to come in first place on free for all. It is unbelievable to me how i can be shooting someone who is not facing me and they turn around and kill me. Also the jumping around like a spider monkey is absolutely ridiculous. For a minute i thought players had some special ability that allowed them to jump so high. Jumping also causes the person shooting to hit them in the leg area which reduces the damage taken by the person even if you were shooting them first. I really enjoyed ww2 and every other call of duty with the exception of advanced and infinite warfare due to the exo suts. I cannot even enjoy playing multiplayer on this game. It's also worth noting that I'm usually pretty negative when it comes to this franchise. It hasn't been amazing for some time. Previous Black Ops games were good, but not amazing like MW1 and 2. This is back up to standard. Give this game a chance and you won't regret it.

Fans have a right to be mad about the omission of the campaign and still be charged full price. Blackout does not validate the price tag since Fortnite has a Battle Royale mode for free.

The specialist missions are short, boring and serve no purpose other than being a tutorial on how to press 'L1 + R1' for your luck based ability that requires no skill to use. Multiplayer has only 10 new but mediocre MP maps. Making remakes is a lazy excuse to fill up a diminishing roster of garbage maps.

Blackout itself is a solid mode but not worth the hefty price tag. I personally like vehicles and realistic gameplay over building. However, it is not worth a single dollar if another BR game is free.

To Blundell and the Zombies team, bravo! You nailed Zombies again and are the only reason this dead beat franchise is even afloat. At least your remakes are genuine and have new storylines and content to the maps instead of being a straight up cut and paste like Multiplayer. The revamped perks system is a fresh perspective and the new cast are fantastic to play as. I like the historical approach to the new maps and the variety of Zombie villains. Zombies alone gets this game to a 1/10

The schemes of lootboxes, overpriced games, season passes and lack of content at launch is a Treyarch special. It's time to stop them and their paid reviewers from encouraging dirty tactics. You don't see Kratos opening loot boxes to find his latest axe. Treyarch and Activision love rigging their little game of monopoly. The spawns, in-game audio and hit detection all suck. It feels like I need ADHD to enjoy the pace. I can't go around the maps at a steady pace and try to strategize without being shot from behind every 5 seconds. Also, my friends and I are hardcore players and every year it seems like the hardcore community gets screwed. We just want to play hardcore capture the flag and the Black Ops series has always had that game mode as well as being the best series in the franchise. So we believed BO4 would be good and like the others in the past, but we were wrong. There's usually a campaign to fall back on, but not this time. This game in particular just feels like a mashup of other games - not Call of Duty. I admit I'm an older player but it's obvious they're catering to the younger generation and turning their back on the older players who got them rich and famous to begin with. They've simply gone away with what made Call of Duty fun and original in the first place. I get that you can't just remake the same game all the time, but how about spending time on making a good quality game instead of spitting one out every year like Madden. Or at least show some good faith by remastering your older games for the older players who had fun playing those games. You would have plenty of people buying BO1, BO2, MW2 and WaW if they were remastered. You can still find games to play on MW remastered. I hate saying this, but I won't be buying another Call of Duty game unless it's a remaster or if major quality changes are made. Until that happens, I'm moving on. It's unfortunate but I had fun (for the most part) while it lasted. Don't believe all the paid positive reviews. Expand

So I'm not totally in to the whole battle-royale thing, but that was probably the better part of this game. Known as Blackout, it adds the Call of Duty twist to an already tired and oversaturated genre. I wouldn't call it new and fresh by any means, it's more like 'fresh' in the way food is 'fresh' in the bargain bin at your local supermarket. It gets old quick.
Zombies - I'll be honest, I barely tried. I got bored during Black Ops 3 Zombies and I don't see it getting any better.
Multiplayer - Oh my god the multiplayer. I hated every minute of it, the gunplay felt clunkier than a PS2 game, 6-7 body shots do absolutely nothing and I hated the new healing yourself aspect. The specialist abilities were boring and most of them recycled from the last game. I hated every moment of it.

In summary, this game is like watching a train derail in slow motion. Its painful. If you are hugely dedicated to Call of Duty, you will get this no matter what. If you are a normal gamer, you will probably get tired of this annual franchise very quickly.

One point cause they got the name of the game correct. Been a gradual decline in what made this franchise great. COD4 had it in terms of great MP - MW2 hit the sweet spot, then came the decline. Thought the franchise had now slowly plateaued in terms of mediocre MP but BLOPS4 seems to have found a new level, sorry no, a sheer drop into the realm of laughable, unrecognisable COD.

I was absolutely 100% correct. That, and they didn't make a campaign, this made me extremely sad to see that Treyarch quit making the thing they always made so wonderfully. The Multiplayer aspect is junk. The hitbox registration is so far beyond screwed up, the weapons are unbalanced as absolute crap.

The only reason I'm giving this poor, sad excuse of a game 1 out of 10 is because the Zombies mode is actually okay. The new perk system takes time to get used to, but I am overall pleased with this part of the game.

As of right now, I feel that Black Ops 4 is just a 100GB-ish chunk of anger issues, and bad nights waiting to happen. I'd honestly already have deleted it if the Zombies mode was bad. Thank god it wasn't.

    3. Minigames were the majority of what I played in CoD games since the original Black Ops. I've been dying to see sticks and stones in another CoD game since Bo2, but activision have repeatedly failed to deliver. Games like Infection, one in the chamber, one shot and gun game have also disappeared from this game's playlist unfortunately.

The one point I gave was for the remake of the old maps. They look very good. I just wish there was some fun gameplay to go along with them.

Mechanically the game is very good... HOWEVER:

The game itself is a joke, a load of old maps thrown together in an unfinished way, with no campaign. The Zombies maps are dissappointing. Blackout is the only saviour, but there are major issues with this as well.
The price is disgusting for a remake of old stuff. Would never buy or recommend to anyone

Also, the menus are awful, from create a class to combat record, it's so bad! They are laggy and aren't smooth at all.

I was unfortunate enough to get suckered into purchasing the black ops pass thinking it would provide some cool content or incentives for purchasing it but like many others was left feeling completely ripped off. They might as well have just marketed this game as a strictly battle royal game only and left out the traditional multiplayer because the BR mode is the only one they actually put any real effort into and unfortunately I'm not a fan of that genre of game. The multiplayer is filled with horrible spawn points that leave you frequently getting spawn killed, quickscopers, horrible match balancing that results in sometimes playing for hours without a single win due to very unbalanced teams, and lastly the specialists that were supposed to be the selling point in the game that end up making it the most annoying experience of all. Most of the specialists are useless, a lot the specialists abilities are extremely OP (Zero). I do not see this game lasting as long as they marketed it for, once Modern Warfare drops the playerbase for this game in multiplayer is going to have a huge drop off. Expand

So the thing is is that there are alien trolls and undead and stormtroopers in the game, to be specific those count as real world animals when a universe has consistent cause and effect, makes sense and is good. It is Disney Star Wars so it does none of those things. The real world actually only refers to everything that has consistent cause and effect. This is objective factual and indisputable, don't be retarded by pretending it isn't. Everything I have said in response to the above statement from @WrittenRage is indisputable fact.

My main grip with this game (such as it is), is the lack of a campaign/story mode.. this was the main and sole reason i personally bought these titles before, for the military themed campaign, without that, this just seems like a really lazy product and extremely poor value for money and money grab on the behalf of the publisher, and is now an empty shallow PvP only experience with a now obvious online reliant shelf life before it becomes essentially a glorifies mug coaster... without a campaign, this is a huge backwards step and something less, not progress, especially compared to the feature packed Black Ops 3, with two campaigns, Co-Op capable campaign and Split screen for all modes, this Black Ops (i don't even know why it's called Black Ops as its nothing to do with Black Ops operations) is an insult after such a comprehensive Black Ops 3.

I hope this is not a sigh of things to come for Call of Duty, because if it is, i will never be buying a Call of Duty again.

The new menu interface is horrible, pointless and a straight up copy of Destiny. Every gun pretty much sounds the same, theirs nothing unique about any of them. The gunplay isn't very good either, probably the worst of any COD game and I've played them all, but the specialist 'super powers' straight up ruin it for me, they're extremely cheap and completely destroy the balance of a gun battle, like the pistol with great accuracy that kills you with one shot, or the X-ray vision where you can see enemies through walls. I'm not bad at this game by any means, I just don't like it or what COD has become, I really can't take this game seriously with the glowing pink camos, the constant sound effects and people jumping around corners, this isn't the gritty, somewhat realistic war game I once loved. It’s not that I can’t respect it — it seems to offer decent value in that it’s essentially three different types of shooter in one package, but aside from the new Blackout mode, I’ve had significantly better experiences from many of its competitors. And honestly, Blackout’s main competition is a free-to-play game. It may be better than Fortnite in my opinion, but sixty dollars better? I’m not entirely convinced about that, and without a decent singleplayer campaign attached, it’s a pretty hard sell for anyone who isn’t already a fan.
