Borderlands 3 is a fantastic entry in the series and a generous, artful, character driven loot shooter that's up there with the best of of it's kind. There's personality everywhere - from the art painted on the walls in each world to the characters and dialogue to the funky costumes and hair to the creative guns to the little trinkets on the side of the creative guns to the light color change on the PS4 controller depending on the element you're wielding. Some of that is cosmetic but it's that same love and detail that goes into a lot of what the game has to offer on it's deeper layers.

The shooting mechanics are top notch and (when well built) your game character can feel like you're in three different types of shooters depending on what gun you have equipped. The Jakobs brand gives you an old school Medal of Honor or Call of Duty feel with iron sights while the Torgue brand can give you a Doom or Duke Nukem feeling with explosive ammo and splash damage. During my rise to Level 50 I had battles that felt like Western shooters as I fell backwards off a dusty cliff and then some that felt like the Moonraker mission in Goldenye with all lasers. The range is very wide and it is very fun.

The sound is an absolute highlight in the game as it is crystal clear and unique. There are so many guns (like, so many guns) and so many have unique sounds and shooting mechanics. The intense gun battles are punctuated by the crisp sound effects and it is overwhelmingly satisfying to hear the explosions and popping and clicking of the wrath you rain down in the game. It feels so good. This highlight can be extended to the great voice acting as well.

The story is solid and makes a clear statement about the millennial culture that we’re living in. You get to meet a host of fun characters on each planet, a highlight of which comes in the form of a stuffed teddy bear later on in the game. Unfortunately, most of the characters reprised from 2 can be dry or generally non interesting. Which is a total bummer because they were all so great in the previous installment. While characters like Hammerlock, Lillith, and Tannis are still great it feels odd to see a whole host of old characters again that aren't nearly as fun as the last time you saw them.

Uniquely, this is also a game where moments of beauty and tranquility can be found in certain pockets on each planet. There were many times I would have an epic battle against a beautiful sunset backdrop or in an Asian-inspired monastery and then stand for a few minutes to take in all of the detail. The level design has noticeably improved from the previous title, the navigation of which is a dramatic step up from the previous title. The Jurassic Eden-6 offers a high canopy and lush greenery while Promethea is a big outer-space moon rock you can glide through. There are still a couple of maps that feel congested and not fun to run around, the biggest ding of which is on the new Sanctuary. It's the hometown of the game so it's a place that must be revisited more than any other. it's by far the most claustrophobic and even after 70 hours of running through it I still get lost. It isn't a fun place to keep coming back to and you have to KEEP coming back to it. When compared to the hometown in Borderlands 2 it's a significant step down and a very boring world in an otherwise exotic one.

The RPG elements are very solid and can make for some incredibly fun variations depending on your build. There are so many options that there's a way to make a very middle of the road character that may prevent some users from being able to experience the sharpness the game can offer as you weave through the gun fights. When focused on one skill tree you can really see the power your build can bring. The game can absolutely get repetitive after extended play but the level up rewards and new equipment comes quick enough that there's always a great new robotic rabbit to chase around the track as you grow.

There's a load of things to do after the credits like New Game+ and Guardian Ranks/Mayhem Mode or side-quests or multi-player game types where you fight off hordes of enemies with strangers or friends. At the time of this review, I found the matchmaking to be very slow and it was difficult to find people to play with; over five minutes to find even one person sometimes. That's tough two months after a games release. Not sure if that's a 2k thing or not... The game is exponentially more fun while playing with others so the hope is that Gearbox makes that more accessible soon.

If you're looking for a game to get this holiday season this one will last for months. If you've got friends that got it too then even better. Playing for a short time or a long time the game is a fun time. Good work, Vault Hunter.

Unlike its predecessors I am not invested in or inclined to jump back in to play any new DLC which is testimony to my points above.

As a huge fan of Borderlands and Borderlands 2 I expected more. No where near the performance of the remastered Borderlands 2 which runs smoothly at 60fps in full HD. I can't get more than a few hours into a laggy 30fps and below game with grainy and pixelated visuals. Assuming the ps5 is backwards compatible I'll try to play the game again when I update from my standard PS4.

The game loses the rest of the score through crashes (blue screens), the lag and how hard it was to connect with my friend. I thought the crashes were limited to the social aspect of the game but I just crashed during a firefight in single player. Hence going out of my way to create this meta critic account JUST to post this review and let the masses know how bad the game is. I've crashed like 6 times in the span of a few hours before giving up for the day.

I was going to get the game and the season pass eventually on steam when it was released but not anymore. Seriously gearbox, get your **** together.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am not one to leave a review for games but for Borderlands 3, I had to. What in the world is going at Gearbox, did they change writing staff, 'cause the story really sucks ass. Why is the focus placed heavily on Ava, and the way they seem to be killing off characters is amazing. I really love the improvements with fast travel, theguns (100% better than Anthem), and Im really love the way boss fights are sat up, however the story is way too short. Honestly, the game would have worked better as a 30 dollars expansion. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Inexcusably bad performance, nonstop 'kill or be killed' game play, starked around a boring story about a group of vault hunters. The biggest letdown is the FPS lag on a PS4 Pro - I've not experienced anything this poorly ported before on this console - getting less than 30 FPS. There is a performance adjustment in the settings but that is bad way of covering up low quality porting. I shouldn't have to chose on a higher end console between performance and high quality visuals.

As for the visuals the environments are pretty and for the 10 hours I put into the game I enjoyed some of the things I viewed, but there was little desire to keep playing because of shuttering.

Creeps never die and are always respawned in their original locations. Seems like fun if I want to constantly grind, but if I wipe out a level 1 camp I don't expect to encounter it again when I go through that section on my way back to base. In addition the leveling system seems boring and just because I can upgrade to higher dps weapons there is no difference between my toon at level 3 and 9 outside of some perks I chose. Speaking of, it conceptually seemed cool to be able to use these skills in battle but I wasn't impressed by the need to use them in battles.

Most battles are shoot, throw a grenade, use some sort of special skill perk, repeat. I didn't get too much enjoyment out of running through the same waves of enemies but this time in 'vr' aka a blue filter on the screen and a special semi-boss before I could finish my objective. BORING!

The writing reminds me of dad joke puns paired with the same type of borderlands game play from this series 2nd installment. I couldn't even bring myself to really laugh at some of the corny jokes and the mature rating was more comical than the stupid jokes I heard.

This is a game I regret buying (thankfully I got it preowned and can still return it) because this game lacks in many ways. I typically don't find myself bored within a half hour of game play and with this it felt more like a chore to play than to enjoy spending my time grinding through the same low-level camps I already cleared, twice. I would avoid this one.

    - Cast is great
    - Planets are pretty
    - 4 dlcs that will expand an already big game

    Cons

Originally I wrote a review defending the game when it first came out. After playing it for much longer, I simply enough found the game unbearably tedious, boring and completely void of any really good humor or writing. Its just kinda a big shooty mess of uninspired shooty level design.

Nothing here stands out as fresh, in regards to the layout of this open world. Pandora and the other planets in Borderlands 1 -2 had much more character and personality as opposed to these newer maps. Its sort of annoying how void of entertainment this game is.

I understand that it is JUST a big dumb shooter, but GOD! is it dumb. Also the missions as fetch quests are probably some of weakest i've played Everything is so oddly placed and just really lakc any focus, Its kinda irritating.I've played much more calculated and entertaining fetch quests in previous Borderlands games.

I feel as if i've just kinda grown out of this genre of game. I need more narrative structure these days Humor that is subtle. I guess borderlands just isn't for me these days.

I think I wanted to believe that this game was SO MUCH MORE! I also wanted to justify my preorder. I was wrong.

Factor in the graphical glitches, rampant texture pop-in and generally asthmatic performance levels, even when running on a PS4 Pro with settings optimised to favour smooth running, and there really is no end of reasons not to love Borderlands 3 (and don’t even think about Googling developers Gearbox Games’ litany of employee relations history)...And yet... love it, I do. Guilty as charged.
