If you've ever wanted to don Batman's cape and cowl and be put in his shoes, then 'Batman: The Telltale Series' is the game for you. Here, you're not just fighting crime as the Caped Crusader, you're fighting his moral battles as well.

After playing the game, I found a whole new gaming genre that fit my interests. I enjoy action based games but sometimes its nice to sit back and enjoy a well written story. After that I tried The Walking Dead (Season 1), The Wolf Among Us, Life is Strange and of course my favorite Tales from the Borderlands. So when I found out that Telltale Games was making a Batman game, I was ecstatic. I found a new game genre that I love, throw in the fact that I’m a bit of D.C. nerd and you have a game thats right up my alley.

Some of you might not even know what Telltale Games are so they’re a small/indie Developing (and Publishing) company that specialize in graphic adventure video games. The games are usually split up into 5 episodes and each episode is approximately 2 hours long so the entire games usually takes about 10 hours to complete. The gameplay itself is usually simplistic, you have very limited movement when controlling your character and all action sequences are handled by quick time events. The biggest aspect of the gameplay is the very in-depth talk paths, you ultimately get to chose everything your character has to say. This may not sound very exciting but these games are driven by the narrative and by putting you in difficult moral dilemmas. Even if it is just a video game, its never easy choosing gets to live and and has to die.

That’s a quick run through how Telltale Games play and work but how does that translate to this new Batman game? Knowing that Batman doesn’t kill so I was very curious, how Telltale was going to deal with this since most moral dilemmas revolve in Telltale games revolve death but with this game that obviously couldn’t happen. I think Telltale did a great job with this, you often times have to chose between saving one person or another who (is it whom?) are not necessarily in life or death scenarios but they’re certainly in precarious situations. There are also situations where you have to chose between going to an event either as Batman or Bruce Wayne. Both options have their pros and cons so you have to weigh it out and pick what you think is the best option.

Where this game really nails it is, its not necessarily an interpretation of Batman but rather it gives you option for you to chose the type of Batman you want to be. Do you want to send a message to the criminals of Gotham by being absolutely Brutal or do you want to work within the law a little more and by more merciful when it comes to dealing with the criminals. A cool feature at the end of the game actually rates you between being merciful and brutal. In case anyone is wondering, I ended up with a 92% merciful rating so obviously I chose the law-abiding approach.

Although I really enjoyed this game, it does have some issues that need to be addressed. The biggest issue of this game is the fact that it has some serious frame rate issues. In some cutscenes, the frame rate ends up tanking and it can make the gaming experience a little less enjoyable. It bothers me because if a game has frame rate issues in cutscenes that means its poorly optimized. The good news is there have been patches released to fix most of these frame rate issues but if you bought the game in 6 months, you’re still likely to run into a few.

My only other complaint with the game is, episodes 4 and 5 just feel shorter than usual. Both of these episodes ended up taking an hour and a half so they feel shorter than the first 3 episodes. It certainly didn’t feel like the story was poorly edited and moments were cut out but I can’t help but feel like the game could have been an hour longer.

I have watched a lot of animated Batman movies, TV’s shows, Live Action Batman Movies and have even played a few Batman video games and I think Telltale did the best job with Bruce Wayne. Instead of the game feeling like another Batman story, its Batman and Bruce Wayne. You play as both equally and they both have very interesting story arcs. In some ways, its almost more fun to play as Bruce Wayne than it is Batman.

Since this is a narrative based video game, the story is obviously the most important aspect of the entire game and Telltale does a great job of it.The game kept me on the edge of my seat for most of it and although I don’t want to spoil anything but I do want to mention that they had a very interesting story arc with the Wayne’s family history. What also got me very excited about the story is, its not all about the Joker. Nothing against the Joker but it just seems like he’s a bit overused and its nice to see some other Batman villains get a chance to be in the spotlight.

A fantastically fun game - with just cursory knowledge of the batman universe you get to explore all the best parts - criminal intrigue, a feared super villain, and the dynamic of Bruce Wayne the influencer vs Batman the Dark Knight.

Really enjoyed it. Was like experiencing a Batman comic through a different narrative.
Story was interesting, enjoyed the characters, didn't appreciate telltales unique take on the characters design at first but I have got to admit, It grew on me while playing the game.

Good game, recommend getting it on sale since it doesn't have much of a replay value.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played all 5 episodes to completion, and I liked it. It could have had more humour in it though. I felt it was a bit too serious. The fact that you could actually stop Harvey from becoming the true 'Two Face' in terms of disfigurement, was quite cool (I played both options). The original take on some of the characters was really good too. Overall, I enjoyed this game. Expand

Finished it two days ago. I don't think the PS4 version is that bad. I really liked the story and all the choices you make. It's really quite awesome. Sometimes I had to do stuff again but with different choices actual different things happen. I hope they make a second season. I liked Selina Kyle, Dent and Lady Arkham a lot.

That said, I think the game is highly story-wise and has a bit of everything: dialogues, decissions, action (obviously through QTE), detective-like parts... Besides, it is not as long as other Telltale games, which I believe is a good point. It actually makes you want to play another game of the series.

I loved it! This is my favourite telltale game by miles, it stays true to the batman vibe while giving you enough choices for you to feel in control. I'd love a sequel and by the ending wouldn't be surprised if we got one. My one problem is that some of the most important choices don't actually matter...

If you enjoy The Walking Dead or The Wolf Among Us, then I think you'll like this. Batman follows up on its TV show and comics. The game looks nice, like any other Telltale game. The voice acting is pretty amazing, too. There is a second game which introduces more characters, and I LOVE it. If you're willing to spend some money, this should be your go to.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. “The mask is a symbol. For some it’s fear, for others it’s hope.”

Okay, so Telltale’s Batman was released in 2016 for almost all modern platforms, aside from the Nintendo Switch which released on the system in 2017. I remember when this game was announced, I’ve wanted it as soon as I saw the first trailer. A Telltale series about Batman? It was a dream come true! However, the game was not what I anticipated.

The reason for that is all due to the technical side of the game. It ran at about 15-20 FPS on my PC, which is strange, considering Tales from the Borderlands and The Walking Dead run at an almost constant 60. Now, you could argue that this is due to the overhauled engine and it may not be equipped to run on all PCs, but then the same issues are present on the PS3 and PS4 versions of the game. Whilst they aren’t as bad on the PS4, it’s still very noticeable when the framerate drops, which is a shame, since it takes you out of the experience. Now, resolution wise, this isn’t great, either. The game runs at 900p on the PS4, and 720p on the Xbox One. Not only that, but the game was also letterboxed, which I guess creates a more cinematic presentation? But that doesn’t help anything, since that reduces the resolution to 766p on the PS4 and 614p on the Xbox One. Keep in mind, this game released in 2016, when we were starting to get 4K consoles, but these issues aren’t present in the sequel, and it was a new engine at the time, so I guess I can cut them some slack.

So, there isn’t much to talk about in terms of gameplay. Pretty much all it is, is completing quick time events, walking around in a restricted space whilst clicking on people to talk to and things to interact with, and most importantly, the conversation trees, where you pick from 1 of 3 (sometimes 4) options.

Now, the story and characters are easily the best thing about this game. If you haven’t played it yet, I’d suggest you skip to the next paragraph, as I’m going to go into spoiler territory. The characters are obviously based on the characters from DC Comics, but there are some new ones introduced here and there, but their roles are so minor that they’re not really worth mentioning. With the characters based on the DC ones, though, there’s not only a lot of them, but the majority of them are so different from any other iteration of that same character. Sure, we have Bruce, which is different depending on how you play as him. Then we have Alfred, which is much more of a gentleman than any other version, in my opinion. There’s also Harvey Dent, who doesn’t become Two-Face if you save him in episode 2, however, he does start going insane no matter what. There’s also Penguin, John Doe (The Joker) and Vicki Arkham. Now, this is really the best twist I’ve seen in a Batman story, Vicki Vale being the puppet master, as opposed to someone like The Joker, or Penguin. Whilst Penguin is a main villain in the story, he still takes orders from Vicki. And it isn’t revealed until the end of episode 3, so about halfway through the game. And I think that was a good time to reveal it. Now, as I mentioned before, The Joker is in this game, however, he doesn’t really do much. He’s introduced in episode 4, then when Bruce gets out of Arkham, he isn’t in the rest of the episode. However, he is in episode 5, but he only has 2 small cameos and they don’t really contribute to much. Although his character in season 2 is the best Joker, but I’m saving that until I review it.

Overall, Batman: The Telltale Series is a great story, with fantastic writing and some choices do affect the story in certain ways. However, unless you’re playing this game on a really powerful gaming PC, you’re going to run into bugs and performance issues everywhere. However, I would recommend this game to any Batman fan (so, everyone) if you can overlook the bad performance. That’s it for my review. Thank you, and I hope you enjoy the rest of your day. Batman out!

With so many Dark Knight adventures in our movies, TV, comics, and video games, you have to do something special to stand out. In the first few episodes, it looked like Batman: The Telltale Series might actually bottle lightning and create something excellent. But as the finale rolls in, it series fails to separate itself from the many Batman outings we’ve already experienced elsewhere.
